(00:00):
Hello, Jeff, this is MickeyThomas calling. How are you doing,
Mickey, I'm pretty good. Howare you? I'm great. Thank you
so much for calling, man,and nice to talk to you again.
It's it's been a few years, and we're so glad to have you back
at the phrase Pavilion Saturday night.Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
You know, get back out ofthat area and tall the stage with
my buddy Richard Mark. That's alwaysfun. I'm voting for a collaboration on
(00:23):
stage between you two, by theway, it'd be really cool. You
know. Richard's a great singer anda great guy too. He's one of
the real, one of the realgentlemen in rock and roll. Well,
you know what is wild, Youguys must have been texting back and forth,
because he said the exact same thingabout you in society that's exactly right
(00:44):
now, very complimentary about not only, of course, how incredible your voice
is, but also just about howgenuinely nice that you are as as a
person too, which is obviously that'sthe number one thing right there. Yeah,
you know, I mean, whynot? Why not? Well,
Mickey, it is it is greatto have you back in town and uh,
and I you know, I justgotta ask. Obviously from the from
(01:07):
the time we first heard your vocalson you know, the Elvin Bishop's song,
you know, fulled Around and fellin Love and uh the late seventies
with Jefferson Starship. Are you stillhaving a good time out there seeing the
people. Oh gosh, yes,I'm having probably as good a time or
better time than I've ever had inmy life. Uh doing this, you
know, I'm so I'm just grateful, you know, thankful that I'm still
(01:29):
able to do it. You know, I feel good. Uh, you
know, my voice is held upfor me over the years, and uh,
so, you know, it's justit's more fun now than ever.
You know, it's a lot alot less pressure these days than it was.
You know, we're doing you know, massive long tours back in the
eighties and stuff, and uh,you know now it's just, uh,
it's more of a relaxed gig now. Interesting. That's really cool. And
(01:52):
it's funny because, especially interviewing alot of artists over the last couple of
years, kind of coming out ofCOVID and stuff, it really seems like
I've heard so many artists and bandssay that they really have a new appreciation
for getting back out on the roadafter it kind of went away for you
know, a couple of years.Oh yeah, definitely, you know,
and we're just now like this yearis the closest we've come yet to getting
(02:15):
back to uh, you know,to some similts of normalcy before the pandemic.
Yeah. So it's just great. And uh, the problem is there's
so many bands outter everybody. Everybody'strying to work again, you know,
so, yeah, it gets tobe crowded. That's the playing field is
(02:35):
very crowded this summer, that's forsure. Yeah. And it's and the
thing is, it's uh, youknow, it's it's all a great artists
that like yourself and Richard that Igrew up with, and we just had
thirty eight Special and Loverboy here acouple of weeks ago, and that was
so much fun. But then you'vegot Taylor, Taylor Swift and Ed Sharon
and you know, and Beyonce, and it's like the whole world every artist
is touring this summer. You're exactlyright, all different strata, you know,
(02:59):
different levels of you know, everythingfrom like obviously the Taylor swiftly one
of the biggest tours ever, stadiumsto you know, to down to casinos
and fairs and festivals and clubs andwhatever, you know, where every strata
of artists is out there working thissummer. It's it's it's just a good
thing. And you mentioned a Loverboyand thirty eight Special, those are great
(03:21):
friends in nine too. Man.I've done a lot of shows with Loverboy.
Mike. Mike Reno and I aregood buddies and thirty eight Special guys
have a long history with them. It's great to see everybody still out there
doing it. Yeah, I totallyagree with you. And you know,
uh, you and Mike Reno havedid not do yourself any favors when you
were singing all these songs back inthe seventies and eighties. And I'm telling
(03:44):
you what so, and I've I'veseen you recently, Mickey where your your
voice is just it's it's incredible.Mike Reno sounded amazing a couple of weeks
ago. I was just I'm lookingat it, going, holy cow,
man, how do you do that? How do you preserve your voice?
Mickey? Well, you know youmentioned what you said so true because sometimes
many times I'll ask myself, like, God, why do we record that
(04:05):
so high? You know, backthen, you know you didn't think,
oh, well, I'll be singingthis song forty years from now. True.
But you know, I don't doanything special or anything in particular.
I think, more than anything,I've just been fortunate that I guess my
parents gave me some good genes. You know, I do try to I
(04:28):
mean, I do try to takecare of it. You know. The
most important thing is trying to getenough rest, which is not always easy
to do on the road. Butyou know, bleep is important, you
know. I you know, Idon't smoke or I don't do any any
kind of drugs or anything like that. You know, my vice is my
shart Tony. I love good wine. That is well, you know,
(04:49):
San Francisco. I think that's uh, that's pretty natural. Right. Yeah.
Do you do you still live inthe in the Bay Area or you
you know, back where you guysgot started, or where are you these
days? No? I left theBay Area some years ago. I moved
up to Tahoe, to Lake Tahoe, up in the mountains and built a
home up there, and then livedin the mountains for several years and then
(05:11):
kind of got tired of the snowand ice. So I went from one
extreme to the other and I movedto Palm Springs, California. Oh yeah,
I guess so yeah, well andso so from San Francisco to Tahoe
to Yeah, you've you've had alittle bit everything there, Mickey, Yeah,
I have. That's all great places, you know, all great places
to live. Well, we can'twait to see you and hear you play
(05:33):
live. Can you tell everybody whatto expect when they come to the show?
I mean every night, Jane, find your way back. You know,
we built this city and nothing's goingto stop us. Sarah, you
know those are all going to bein the set every night. Um,
they'll also be uh my female vocalist, Sean and I we do a kind
of a tribute to the history ofthe band where we do a medley in
(05:56):
the middle of the show where Seandoes um, you know, the iconic
Grace Slick songs, White Rabbit,Somebody to Love, and then I'll do
some early Jefferson starship stuff, counton Me and Miracles and then you mentioned
food around and something of the love. I still do that one every night
show. Yeah. Nice, Ialways loved I've Got My I've got My
(06:16):
like select Mickey Thomas favorites. Ilove all the hits, of course,
but then some of the ones, and you have so many hits, but
then some of them that you don'tyou know, don't hear as much as
maybe we built the city or nothing'sgoing to stop us now. Yeah,
but I love No Way Out andLaying It on the line from Nuclear Furniture
Man, those two are so awesome. We we do lay it laying it
(06:38):
on the line almost every night. We found out that even though it's not
one of the more uh, youknow, notable songs in the history of
the band, it just works sogreat as an opener. So that's usually
what we opened the show with.Nice it's such a good tone, you
know, and uh and and westarted doing that for a while, and
then I tried to change in differentopeners, but seeming to work like laying
(07:00):
it on the lay and so wedo that. Well, we'll probably do
No Way Out, uh in catteringif you usually I'll either do No Way
Out or it's not enough one ofthose Oh boy, now, don't make
don't make me change, don't makeme choose those because I was about to
say it's not enough. It's notenough. It's gonna be and and I
don't I didn't mean to stay allnight, but I know that that is
(07:24):
that's kind of a that's kind ofgoing deep there. But yeah, yeah,
boy, it's not enough. Itis so good. And uh,
my brother will probably punch me inthe face if if I get you to
drop that one for no way out. So we're gonna have to really talk
about that when Mickey, we'll seeif we can squeeze both of them.
Man. Maybe, well it's it'syou sound great, man. It sounds
like you're still having fun. Anduh, what do you do when obviously
(07:46):
you're doing You're doing plenty of shows, Uh, you know with the band.
What do you do in your sparetime when you're not when you're not
singing these days? Well, youknow, in my spare time, I
used to play golf a lot,but I gave up golf. Wow,
I got too sus it's crush.Yeah, so you know, I don't
know. You know, when I'mhome, I love to cook, you
know, So I spend a lotof time in the kitchen cooking dinner.
(08:07):
Almost every night when I'm home, and you know, I mentioned Wyan so
there's nothing like good food and goodwine. So I'll do that. You
know. I spend a lot oftime in the pool, you know,
soaking up the sun, listening tomusic, just kind of chilling. I
love movies, big movie fan.Nice, you know. I still I
still try to hit the gym aboutthree times a week and work out a
(08:28):
little bit, or ride my bikeor something, you know, stay active.
Excellent, Mickey. We can't waitto see you live great catching up
with you. Thank you so much, Thank you for everything. We're really
looking forward to it. As yousaid, it's been a while since we've
been in the Dayton area, soit's gonna be a real treat, you
know, being there again and playingwith Richard. I can't wait. Awesome.
(08:48):
