(00:00):
Hey, Paul Reiser calling in.Paul Riser, it is so cool to
talk to you. I've been afan since Matt about you, but actually
even before that, back to BeverlyHills Cop. That's how old you are?
How much old I am? Yes? Wow, this is not my
line impressive. Well here we are. Yeah. We just did Beverly Hills
Cop Force coming out this summer onNetflix and Eddie Murphy and I looked at
(00:23):
you and go, it's forty yearsforty years crazy, that's crazydiculous. Yeah,
can you give us a little insighton Beverly Hills Cop four. I
will tell you something, and justbetween you and me, I did a
very nice thing. I gave EddieMurphy the bigger part, and you know
what, it worked out well.He was awfully funny. I had no
(00:46):
I was surprised, but that's thekind of guy I am. I took
a smaller row. Some younger peoplecan can move forward. Yeah, because
he was pretty low key in thefirst few exactly, and I thought it
was time for him to come outof his show and show what he could
do. I love it, PaulReiser, Man, we've been enjoying you
(01:06):
hard to believe for four decades, and I'm sure there are times when it
feels like, uh, you know, a minute, and other times where
maybe it feels like four decades exactly, right, exactly. And I'm very
excited to see your stand up showthis weekend. Did I have chairs or
should I bring? Should I have? They have everything set up already,
Well, that I'm not sure about. I know they spent a lot on
the building. They may not haveany chairs. Well, it's better than
(01:30):
being the last guy in it,you know, like your show, we
tore it out, we closed theplace, Yeah, we closed it.
Yeah, you'll be one of thefirst ones in there, and we'll be
laughing, our laughing our heads off. So I am. I am looking
forward. You know, people peoplesay, why are you still doing stand
up? I go, you knowit is people don't always believe this when
(01:51):
I say, but of all thesethings I've gotten to do, it's it's
the only one that's really fun,you know, getting getting to do you
know, stranger things, watch abig show. Yeah, but it's not
fun. Okay, So I wasgoing to ask you about that. So
well, it's great to be onthem and they're cool and it's great to
be on something that's so well doneand globally embraced, but on a minute
(02:13):
to minute basis, just getting upand telling, making people laugh and seeing
live people. You know, youdon't have to wait a year and a
half to find out if something isgood. They're right there. You're having
a great time together. So youknow, for those of us who started
in comedy and aimed for stand upto be our real career, it's just
the most fun play. So I'mthrilled, and I haven't been in that
(02:35):
neck of the woods in a while. When I started a thousand years ago,
I was in that area a lot, and there are a lot of
comedy clubs and Columbus in Aroun, right, So looking forward to being back,
I would think that even even withMatt about you, which of course
we'd loved for so many years, and then all the movies you were in
and everything else, I would haveto think, just getting that direct,
immediate feedback and seeing the faces andwatching people laugh, that's got to be
(03:00):
the best. Yeah, you know, I mean, I've certainly been lucky
and gotten to do all these greatthings, and I had a great time
for years. You know, we'dmad about you with seven years, and
then we did a little revisit acouple of years ago and that was great
fun. But it's it's you know, it's a different thing, and there's
something a lot of people say, well, stand up has changed so much
over the years, and we're not. Really it's you know, it's this,
(03:22):
it's still so simple and this Idon't mean easy, but I mean
simple, and that it's uncomplicated. You show up, people in there,
you talk to them, and peoplesay, where do you get your material?
And I was home. I'm I'mnot smart enough to make anything up,
so i can only I'm just gonnatell you what happened in my house.
Yeah, and people seem to laughbecause they go, oh man,
(03:44):
that sounds like my house. Soit's it's great, you know, and
it's kind of like it feels likegetting together with old friends when you get
to do a live show. Peopleare in there and we all we're all
going through the same things one wayor another. So it's a great feeling.
Yeah, I would have to thinkthat just to flip on the news
for five minutes and you've got materialfor weeks, right, Well, you
know what, it's funny you saythat because I one day one night,
(04:09):
I just went up and I said, as a I was just as an
aside. I said, listen, just so you know, I'm not going
to be talking about anything, nothingheavy, nothing, nothing in the news.
Yeah, and people people are clapped. I went, oh, I
guess I think I hit something here, because we're all like, can we
just have an hour and a halfan evening of just laughing and having a
good time. We don't have tothink about how many heavy things are going
(04:31):
on in the world. And Iused to sometimes I would feel self conscious.
It was like, boy, whatare we doing. We're just telling
silly stuff. But people do needto laugh, and people need a little
break from the from from the reality. So it's a public service, is
what I'm saying. I'm doing thisfor you the people, and we appreciate
it. I'm telling you, Paulseriously. Obviously there's enough heavy stuff out
(04:54):
there, so I think it's greatthat you're not. You know, it's
not necessarily about, you know, the topics of the day. And I
would have to think that how manypeople, over the course of the decades
talking about Matt about you for justa second, have said, oh,
you know, I would watch thatshow and you know that's that's me and
my wife. You know. Haveyou heard that a lot? Yeah,
we used to get and that wasalways that would be the sign that we
(05:16):
knew we were doing it right right. And people went, you must have
cameras in our bedroom. We do. But you know, there's that old
saying that whatever is the most personalends up being the most universal, because
we're all having those moments, youknow. And I was telling somebody they
said, well, how did youknow how to matt about you always find
those moments? And I said, you know from the beginning when we went
(05:40):
in and pitched the show to thenetworks, and then you always have to
give a quick thumbnail sketch. Isaid, okay, here's the show.
You're ready, I said. You'reat a party with your wife, I
said, you or your husband. You leave the party, smiles, you
get into the car. The secondthat car door closes, that's the show
that the minute of closes and somebodygoes, what why did you say that?
(06:00):
I I didn't know she was relatedto. It's just it's it should
be feel private, I said,And everybody got it. I went,
okay, we know that moment atthe car door closing moment. That's perfect.
That's perfect. Well, Paul,I love it. Thank you so
much for the time we have.Uh we've we all need a night out
where we're just gonna laugh and getaway from the heavy stuff. So that's
(06:23):
perfectly said. You can get ticketsat Paulreiser dot com. Go see Paul
Reiser. Paul, it is goingto be so much, so fun to
have you back in town man.Thank you so much, looking forward,
thank you so much. Nice talking, Yeah you too, Paul. See yea
