(00:00):
Good morning, Jeff Stevens. It'sMike Green now, Mike GREENO from lover
Boy. How are you? Man? Great? Thanks? How are you?
I'm good and so happy. You'reout doing some shows with our pals
thirty eight Special and that going tobe great good. They're good friends of
ours too. We go back tomany many years. I can't even believeable
still out there, but the peoplelove it and I'm loving it and peace.

(00:21):
I don't know what else to do. This is what I do,
well, Mike. I've got DonBarnes from thirty eight Special coming up in
just a few minutes. But hedid say in advance that I had to
give you a hug over the phonefrom him. That's great. Yeah,
that's kind of how I feel too. We're friends. We see last time
I think was the last time wesaw each other were in Key West.
He was a couple of shows ina row anyway down. And you can

(00:42):
tell, man, I can alwaystell when you guys come to town.
You are having so much fun.You know what it is. It's like,
are you kidding that? We like? I come out? I knew
well, I do a lot ofconscious to that. I kind of walk
out on the stage, and Ijust kind of admire ourself, like,
look at us, after all theseyears, we're still rock into the same
music and having the same fun.And you know, a lot of people,

(01:03):
could you really use the little stressreleague nowadays? Man, it's like,
including myself. It's kind of like, you know, working out or
going and do something like fun, like going to a movie. You just
get away from some of the realitiesthat are kind of bugging us down.
And then you hear the songs.I do the same thing when I hear
that they're he special guys. Iturned the radio up and I just love
it. And I even hear myown songs on the radio a lot of

(01:26):
times. I turned it up theother day too, working for the weekend
Game one, and I went,oh, my god, that's perfect.
You know, that's really cool becauseyou hear a lot of artists say,
yeah, you know what, Inever listened to my own stuff, and
I find that, you know,I sort of understand it, and I
also find it kind of hard tobelieve. But so I'm really glad to
hear you say that you turned upworking for the weekend when you heard it,

(01:48):
because there's there's got to still besomething cool about the fact that you
guys did something in a studio backin nineteen eighty one absolutely causes people to
go bananas every time they hear itall these years later. Yeah. Well,
you know what, when we recordedthat song, I remember looking up
and the guys in the control justwent, Oh my god, this is

(02:09):
going to be good. And youknow, it just turned out that it
was. It was one of thosesongs that really got to hold the people.
And well, you know what itis that you kind of prepare all
week for something to do on theweekend. Yeah, and it's going to
be fun and it's gotten I wasgoing to do and work, and you
know, people really prepare for itand then they get ready and I'm with

(02:29):
I do the same thing. Yeah. It's become not just an eighties anthem.
I mean, I've got daughters intheir twenties that you know, they're
like, Dad, give me thecowbell. I'm ready for working for the
weekend. You know what they didhere in Vancouver. I'm here for a
couple of weeks before we get outon the road again. There's always something

(02:49):
fun going on with a loving everyminute. I was another big one that
turned me loose. People go crazyfor it. I've got kids too,
and then they do the same day. I went to my closet the other
day of my red leather pants weremissing from the old days, of course,
and it was what was a whileback, and it was hello here,
and my son had borrowed them.He went out as Mike Greno.
Oh my goodness, that is awesome. That's awesome. So you still have

(03:14):
the pair of red leather pants.Well, absolutely, I do. Everything's
still the same. There's still thirtytwo thirty six sick now it's thirty six
thirty two. That's a slight. You can have that slightly adjusted, right
if I'm lucky. By the way, that is that is Your son went

(03:34):
as Mike Arino. That is sofun. Yeah, that is that was.
That was a trip. I gota big kick out of that one.
I got to ask you, soback to working for the weekend for
a second. Whose idea for thecowbo? You know, the cowbo is
actually there as a click track.I don't know if you know about recording
time. Absolutely, we're going toclick track, and it's just the timing
things. Everybody played just before thesong starts. Everybody's in the same temple

(03:57):
book Book, Book Book, andit goes on and on, and so
it was on and it just stayson. It's like recorded on one of
the tracks. And so when youplay the song back you here's a bump,
bump, bunk. And then whenhe turned it off, everybody went,
hey, it's just a sec let'sput that back in right it started?
Yeah, right, So it's justkind of a lucky lucky accident.

(04:19):
Yeah right, right, which isnow an iconic you know, gotta have
more cowbell, you know, it'slike, uh, it's an iconic thing.
That's uhsolutely, that's fantastic. Well, and the thing is too I
look back at your catalog. Youguys have these amazingly. I mean like
take me to the top and whenit's over, and like you mentioned Tremy

(04:42):
Loose and Lucky Ones. But oneof my faves, I love kid is
Hot Tonight, I love Hot Girlsin Love. But Queen of the Broken
Hearts is one of my absolute favoritesongs that doesn't get quite as much press.
But man, I watching that Summerof eighty three on MTV, the
video was five minutes. Man Iwas like, oh, I love this
song, still love that song, and There's another lucky accident too, because

(05:05):
back in the nineteen eighty or whenMTV opened, we sent them three songs
that we did a visual too,and back then we didn't even know what
they were called videos, right toshow you how far back that goes.
So then we sent them all thisstuff into New York and New York put
a bunch of other stuff into itto make it a full package, and

(05:28):
then send it to this new companycalled MTV. You know, they give
me a break. And so whenwhen when we sent three videos to MTV
the first week they opened, andthey were starving for content. So man,
just let was just a luck ofthe draw. You know, we
just right right there at the righttime. And it's you know, to
really advanced our career for sure.Well, I think people could see you

(05:54):
on MTV. They saw your yourenthusiasm, they saw your head band,
they saw your red leather pants. They were like this band is rocking,
and um, and then you knowyou you like the songs. It's like
the thing I liked about MTV becausesome bands hated doing videos, but um,
I've talked to many over the yearsand like, oh yeah, you
know, the video thing was terrible. It was long, it was it

(06:15):
was brutal, but it was sucha great way to visualize what the song
was and your guy's cases. Itseems like most of the Loveraboy videos were
more like performance videos with with theband in it, which those are the
ones I think I liked the best. Well, you know that video that
you that you liked to the songthat you like, Queen the Broken Hearts.
That was a kind of an interestingWe had to go into the Mojave

(06:38):
Desert via helicopter, I do rememberthat. And and we you know this
is this was hot and think thisThe director who is now a famous director
of the big motion pictures, likeyou know, Brad Pitton pictures. He
asked us to run at the camerafrom about a half a mile away to
get that wavy heat thing in it. And we kept doing it and then

(07:00):
all of a suddenly started dropping likeflies and we had to get like people
come and give us some water anda cold damp towel and because it was
hot and we had all that leatherstuff on and wrapped up, and then
we were supposed to do a scenethat was a super super windy like a
windstorm. Yeah, so they broughtin. They brought in a bunch of
huge fans, and all of asudden, a windstorm naturally happened. So

(07:24):
that's the natural windstorm on the Mohavedesert with chicks with hardly any cloth on
chasteness around. Now, that's atough gig. That's a tough gig bike
if I'm not mistaken too, Ithink I remember I watched way too much
MTV. I think I remember thatthere was a contest. Wasn't there a
contestant? They got to be inthat video? Yeah, that's the starty

(07:46):
and a half. She actually gotso nervous she wouldn't do it, She
wouldn't come. So her mom came. Yeah, so her mum came instead,
and and they limited her out ofthis desert. And I guess on
the way out there, she musthave drank the whole mini bar or something,
because she wouldn't get out of thecar And finally the guy nearly had

(08:07):
to break the window to get herout of the let the scene and that
when they got her in there, she sat down and she was so belligerent
and drunk that they only put heron the screen for about a mega second
as the camera panned to the right, and we are all that the control
booths when the girls were trying tohunting us out anyways, and I said,
where's that contestant? And they wentshe didn't come, but they said

(08:28):
her mom, but she's hammered.Wow, what a story that one is.
And so consequently she didn't get inthe video too much. Huh no
no, And I don't think shegot called back for anything else either.
Yeah, I'd say that's probably ano. Wow. See, I love
these behind the scenes stories. Man, Mike Greno from Loverboy will chat just

(08:50):
for a couple more minutes here andlet's get get ready to roll. You
guys actually have a new release calledRelease it is. It's kind of not
new to me anymore because we've hadit out for quite some time. I'm
actually we're working on a bunch ofnew songs right now, even newer than
that nice, which I'm thinking I'mthinking of bringing them out and playing them
on this next run because we're doinga big summer tour this summer, you

(09:13):
know, with the Foreigner, sothat's going to be great. Yes,
We're all over the US, youknow, for like forty two shows,
and I'm thinking of throwing the newsong and because it's one of these songs
that it's just kind of like workingfor the weekend in that it's all about
rock and roll and dance and it'sgoing to be great. Well, good,
well, we love the thing. You guys obviously have enough hits.
I mean I was talking about thatwith Don Barnes of thirty eight Special.
He's like, I mean between Austinloverboy man, you don't get a break.

(09:37):
I mean, you guys know, just one after now, go go
for sure. I go and imagineall the hits that they hadn't any throw
any bunch of hits that we had, and that's you know, that's like,
that's a full night of hit songs. It's going to be great.
Yeah. Well, that's why we'reso glad to have you guys back together.
And congrats on the Foreigner thing too, because obviously that will also be

(09:58):
a huge night of of hits betweenthe two of you and uh and of
course it's their farewell tour, soplease tell me you're not you're not on
your farewell tour. I know peoplemight be making a mistake that it's farewell
to it for us, we havetoo much fun to say farewell. We're
just going to keep at it androck and all. We look forward to
seeing all our friends everything where wego. We got friends, you know,
and where we're coming to see you, and we got friends everywhere,

(10:22):
and we got great music fans, and you know we're not going anywhere.
I love to hear that, Mike, that is for sure. That is
that is so great. And bythe way, as you're putting your set
list together for the summer, anotherkind of lost eighties loverboy classic, one
of my favorites that doesn't get asmuch chatter is too Hot. I love
that song that's running on all cylinders. That that little jam you got going.

(10:45):
Yeah, that's great. Yeah,it's a good workout chat right right
right. Cardio Day. I wasgonna say it's Cardio Day. Oh,
Mike. I can't wait to seeyou guys here in a couple of weeks.
We're going to be so happy tohave you back in town. And
in the meantime, enjoy a littledowntime, enjoy Alaska, and we'll look
forward to seeing you here very verysoon. And we can't wait to hear

(11:09):
the setlist and hear you belting outthe vocals man. Thanks Jeff, You're
