This is Oclaire's Sports Leader ninety eightto seven, the fan Translator W two
five to four, CNN, WBIZ, A M o'claire and iHeartRadio Station.
It is indeed Hockey Night at Hobbs. Good evening, everybody, Pete Canutes
and Dan Zon's with you for thecrosstown showdown, the intra city clash Oh
(00:21):
Claire Memorial versus OA Claire North herein Big Rivers Conference Boys hockey action.
Hello, everybody, happy to haveyou along with us and Dan. We
are getting ready for what should bea real special night here at Hobbs Ice
Arena, doing a one off gamewhich should be a lot of fun.
This is a great rivalry. We'regoing to talk a lot about it.
But the man of the hour,we got the chance to talk a little
(00:41):
bit to him here right before thegame. Yeah, almost had an entourage
coming into night. There's a lotof folks here to celebrate Mike Sullivan and
all the things that he has donefor O Claire Hockey in this community as
well. And get to be apart of this as well. Dan.
I know it's exciting for you beinga young broadcaster, but you can see
all the people who are here.I mean, this is this is gonna
be a really fun night from HobbsIce Arena. In addition to the hockey,
(01:03):
we're gonna see the boy. It'sgonna be a lot of fun to
get a chance to honor a broadcastinglegend of Wisconsin Broadcasting Hall of Famer in
Mike Sullivan. Yeah, it's veryspecial. It's a very happy time for
everyone here. Everyone's got a bigsmile on their face. Everyone's so excited
to watch Mike Sullivan finally go upon that Hall of Fame there as he
(01:23):
should. He's been a very vitalpart of the community, and especially it's
the sports community here. He's been. He's touched everyone's lives in just the
way that he's spoken about teams, the analytical way, the analytical way he
broke down teams, and also justgave a very very supportive voice too,
(01:44):
just all around the community. Soit's very important, it's very special.
It's gonna be a really great nightat US Inner City matchup too. I
mean, come on, yeah, let's let's talk a little bit about that.
We're gonna have a chance to talkwith Mike quite a bit. In
fact, as part of our Domino'sintermission reports. We're gonna have a two
part an interview with Mike that werecorded, so we'll have part one in
intermission number one and part two inintermission number two as well. You are
(02:07):
listening to the pregame show. It'ssponsored by Toys and Ford here today,
and let's talk a little bit aboutthis matchup, just kind of in general.
Obviously, Oakland Memorials had a prettygood start to the season eight and
four on the year thus far,and have done a pretty solid job overall,
partly seven to two overall rather butdone a nice job overall just outscoring
(02:27):
teams, doing what they've needed todo. They've slipped up a couple times
in conference, but this is aMemorial team that has aspirations of going to
Madison. Oh yeah, they definitelydo. And I mean with four point
eleven goals per game, an offenselike that is hard to stop. Just
no matter where you are on thefloor, you always have players out there
that are gonna make some kind ofa shot. And the way that their
coach is just absolutely amazing too.Mac Diggins one of their better players out
(02:52):
there on the floor ten goals andsix assists leads the team and goals.
He's gonna be one of their biggestweapons out there on the floor, especially
leading this offense. And then healso has been shooting eighty three percents on
his shots on goal per centers there, so you know he's an efficient player
and they're gonna be getting him thepuck throughout this game. So you got
to make sure to watch out forhim, and you got to watch out
(03:13):
for Dylan Burn and then the NickMadison. They have so many weapons out
here on this ice well, andthat's the interesting parties. You've got Dylan
Burn and Nick Madson, who aretwo defenders, right and they've got the
second and third most goals on thisteam, as you mentioned, behind Mac
Diggins. So I mean, theyreally run this offense through their defenders,
which you don't see, especially inhigh school hockey. You don't see a
(03:35):
lot of teams do that. Soit's kind of a unique offense and a
unique attack that Memorial likes to run. And to use a term that we
use in basketball, those are sometwo way players right there, someone that
can be great on the offensive endbut then can still have that energy to
go over on the defensive end andstill play their heart out, and that's
exactly what Dylan Burn and Nick Madsondo. They're just outstanding. And then
(03:57):
also on that defensive end, thegoalkeepers, for Evan Madson or not,
Evan Mattson Breckenhagen fifty eight saves onthe season, ninety three point five percent
saves percentage, and then just thethree to one record. He's been great.
Evan Madson, by the way,he's just a freshman too, and
he's a heck of a goaltender aswell. He has been absolutely lights on.
I mean, it's it's hard tobe a bad goalie when he got
(04:17):
such great defenders out there. ButEvan Mattson one hundred saves, ninety two
point six percent save percentage and afour and one record with him too,
they have a really great defense hereon paper. Yeah, the Memorial Old
Abes got an overtime win against MadisonEdgewood as part of a shootout tournament that
they played this past weekend, Sothey're coming off that. North is coming
(04:38):
off a lost six to one toNina. They've had some struggles this season
therefore and eight on the year, but as we know coach Parker, he's
always got something up his sleeve. He's got some pretty solid players on this
squad, and Logan Hesselman will bethe guy we watch for. He's the
guy that really needs to have agood night if North wants a chance in
this inter city clash. Oh yeah, and that that's a depth the offense
will be running through Logan Hesselman sevengoals, four assists, eleven total points
(05:00):
and also three conference goals. He'sninth in the Big Rivers in conference goals
there as well as Tommy Perkins, who Will has been helping to set him
up three goals and eight assists forhim. He's one of the facilitators on
that offense. And they're gonna reallyneed to get them all going, get
them clicking together, because they've hadsome great stuff. They started off the
season three and oh and then justa slow decline. They've been one and
(05:24):
eight since that three and oh start. Just a way they need to get
back into the season if they wantto try and save it, and it
really starts here tonight and especially ina big matchup here against Memorial, who
this could be the team that ifyou start your own streak on, it's
gonna be against Memorial, an innercity rival. And also a really good
team in the Big Rivers. It'sgonna be a fun one here tonight from
hobbs Ice Arena. We're happy tohave you along with us here on ninety
(05:46):
eight to seven The Fan. Thisstation has gone through name changes, format
changes, all those kind of things, but one of the constants throughout all
the years, back to the seventieswhen this rivalrystartered, was Mike Sullivan broadcasting
whether it was on WBIZ FM orwb IZ AM these games. And we'll
talk much much more about that theban for Oklare North this year. Officially
they are the home team for tonite. Gonna be a fun night. Certainly,
(06:09):
we're gonna take a quick break. We'll come back with our keys of
the game and get you set upfor what should be a really nice ceremony
here as they unveil the Mike Sullivanpress box banner here at hobbs Ice Arena.
Plenty coming up and we'll be backright after this on our special presentation
of Oaklare High School hockey right hereon ninety eight to seven The Fan,
your home for the most sports playby play in the Chippewa Valley. Ninety
(06:31):
eight seven The Fan h welcome backin here to Hobbs Ice Arena. It
is indeed Hockey Night at Hobbs Pakaduttonand dan Zon's with you for a night
to honor Mike Sullivan and to seesome should be some really fun hockey here
between Oaclaire Memorial and OA Claire North. This is the toyson Ford pregame Show.
A special thanks to Craig Toyson andall the folks at toyson Ford for
(06:54):
helping to bring this game to us. Harry Hortel will be and Hotel Law
will be sponsoring our penalty box hereto any kind of penalties in this game
as well. We'll talk a littlebit more about him. He was instrumental
of courses. As Mike said inone of his interviews. You'll hear here
at one of our intermissions his bestfriend and a great sponsor as you hear
one of the old, the oldSullivan commercials there for Harriet Tell and Hertel
(07:17):
Law as well, So a specialthanks to them. To Domino's Pizza,
who is our intermission sponsor tonight,as well as good Rich Sales and Rock
and Tate. They did a greatjob getting this together so that we could
bring in what should be a specialnight here and kind of back to the
old days of hockey radio broadcasting. And Dan, I know you're a dad
obviously, you know, kind ofhad his hand in some radio as well.
(07:41):
We did the football this last yearfor iHeart also, But boy,
you know, it's fun to behere on the you know, or at
least in the press box rather thanMike Sullivan press box to bring you hockey
on the radio. It's it's it'sthat old time field. But you know,
whether you listen to a wild gameor to an NHL game, or
to a Badger game, whatever itmight be, hockey on the radio just
kind of has a different a differentvibe, a different feel to it,
(08:01):
doesn't it. I mean, it'sjust it's fun, it's exciting, it's
energetic, and it kind of getsyou back a little bit into yesteryear.
Oh yeah. And the excitement factoris something you need to like note on
because just hearing the game being revertbeing told back to you through a commentator
that actually like loves the game, that loves to hear the game, then
(08:22):
you can hear in the background everyone'sscreaming having a good time, as well
as just the hocks skating across theUS. It's it's really therapeutic for a
lot of people, including me.Dan, You're sitting the bar high now.
Now I'm gonna have to I'm gonnahave to to live up to the
to the standard you just set hereas well. The Zambodi is almost we'll
get the players out on the icehere momentarily, we'll get your starting lineups.
(08:45):
We do believe that we have aPA feed for you, so hopefully
we'll be able to bring you notonly the starting lineups national anthem, but
we'll be able to bring you thededication of the press box here to Mike
Salvin. Of course, Mike Selvin. What else you gonna say about him?
He's a forty plus year vet interms of play by play. Was
inducted into Wiscotts of Bad Broadcasters Hallof Fame about ten fifteen years ago.
(09:07):
Here as well, was the Bluevoice of the Blue Golds for a number
of years. You see that twentythirteen National Championship banner. He was in
Lake Placid for the Blue Golds winningthat one at the Herb Brooks Ice Arena,
which, as he'll tell you inthe intermission, looks exactly the same
as it did in nineteen eighty forthe Miracle on Ice. I mean,
you know, you think about broadcastersor just people will get to follow sports,
(09:31):
right and you think about the youknow, the the Wayne Lairviz or
the Paul Allens or you know, anybody who's at the highest level certainly you
know, the Vin Scullies and thatkind of thing, and they get to
see great stuff. But for aguy like Mike, you know, he
stays around, does everything local herein Eau Claire, and still gets to
see a ton awesome stuff. Imean, that's that's it's a life well
lived that in that way, isn'tit. Oh yeah, definitely? And
I mean just being able to livethrough a championship, let alone be able
(09:54):
to commentate it. I mean thatis absolutely something special, especially for someone
who's been in this community for solong. It is such an honor and
it's such a privilege to have aguy like Mike Sullivan be a part of
this community and just continue to behere. We know he's very talented.
We know he could have probably goneto the big stages, but he chose
to stay here. He loved thiscommunity with his whole heart. And we're
(10:16):
gonna we're gonna party with him tonight. Yeah, exactly, he was kind
of up to join us. We'llhave a two part interview for you in
the person the second intermission that willwe brought you up by Domino's as well.
You see the banners at the otherend as well, the state championships
for the Old Abes in twenty thirteen, two thousand and eight. Of course
Oaklaire North getting to the state tournamenta few years ago in twenty nineteen,
(10:37):
I believe it was, and soa number of those that he was there
and a part of wherever they mighthave been played. And so again there's
a number of stories that we cango through, but very key not only
that in just the broadcast, butalso bringing hockey kind of bringing it to
the next level. Everybody obviously lovescovering football, basketball, baseball. I
love those three sports, don't getme wrong. But bringing it to this
(10:58):
level is big as well. Sowe will listen in for the announcement of
the starting lineups and the national anthemand much much more coming up here in
a second than we should have thepresentation for Mike Sullivan of the Mike Sullivan
Press Box here as well, Sowe're looking forward to that and should be
a good one here for tonight's game. So yeah, unless they don't have
(11:20):
a PA announcer, which all ofa sudden, everybody's looking around like what's
going on here? Yeah, wewere getting a couple of books here too.
Is an interesting situation happening. Wheneverthey start looking at us, man,
that's when I get a little bit, a little bit nervous. But
nonetheless, you are listening to OaklaireHigh School Hockey here on ninety eight seven
(11:41):
the fan that's trans later W twofive four CNN, WB I Z A

with the end of Oaklaire North onthe front, Huskies across the chest,
and the Columbia blue numbers outlined inblack with black breezers trimmed in Columbia blue
and white here this evening, allright, We are lined up and ready
to go. We will tune innow. I believe somebody's got a microphone
and we will be ready. There'sno JV game, so that might might

over thirty years the voice of sportsat multiple letters for multiple teams, and
the Great Island, the basketball courtand his favorite and the hockey rink.
Mike Sullivan. When I first movedto a player and they did any run

news, discussing current events, andsomething called Mike and Mike in the morning,

And the first hundred and twenty fairexplosions and the Matt Newton and Jeff Shenderer,

(24:03):
Sullivan dedication there to multiple people whoof course were a part of him being
able to broadcast and be here aspart of this as well. So there
it is. It is, indeed, Hockey Night at Hobbs Speak. A
do to Dan Zon's with you bringingthis special broadcast here, and a special
thanks again to Toys and Forward forbringing you the pregame show here on ninety
(24:23):
eight to seven. The fan Allright, now you got a lot of
at the pomp and circumstance out ofthe way, and Dan, now that
that you just go on and playhockey. Oh yeah, quite quite a
jump, Quite a jump, i'dsay, But I mean knowing how both
these two teams act and know eachother pretty much, I mean everyone talks
like everyone thinks that just because they'refrom two different schools doesn't mean they don't
(24:48):
know each other. They know eachother. These inner city teams know each
other. They're friends with each other, and they want to beat each other.
This is their not their super Bowl, per se, because that would
be a state championship. However, this is like the Vikings taking on the
Packers right now here bringing a footballquote or a football reference. It's big,
that's for sure. We are ready. The opening puck drop is underway
(25:10):
and it is won by the OldApes. They'll escape from right to left
across your radio dow the old playerNorth Huskies go from left to right,
and as our friend Woody Wall, who is here at the game tonight,
would say, if you got avertical radio, you gotta turn it sideways,
all right North with it. We'llhead down the ice and an offside
will be called right away here aswe are twenty seconds in, it's a
little bit mooseee goosey with the puckthere into the attacking zone for Oaklaire North
(25:37):
and the Huskies to put a littlebit of pressure on here to start Aiden
Casper as you hear one of thestarters, he'll take the face off for
the Huskies. Manson to take theface off for Oaklaire North. And it's
one or for a Memorial rather it'sone by North. They'll dump it into
the near corner and chase down hereby Memorial. It'll be Kircher to it
and the Old Apes trying to clearthe zone, but a little bit again
(26:00):
nonchalant with it. Now they'll gofor the break the other way. This
is an attack for Mads and thatshot just over the bar. You hear
the started goalkeeper as Carter Dust didn'thave to do anything there is that was
a wide shot. It's still agood one here for the Old Apes as
they maintained his own down at theend of our left. If you threw
a centering pass here to Carnates, wasn't there for Ottoman and out to swing
over to the far blue line andout of his own back to neutral life.
(26:22):
Old Abbes dump back in, they'llgo get a change and the first
change. They're pretty neutral for bothteams. Just one chance there for the
Old Apes dumped in here by North, old Abs again little nonchalant back in
their own end back to get thatone was mac Diggins. We talked about
him quite a bit, skating upwith a full head of seamons pankrats,
but that's through the five by scoresday pankrats with his third goal of the
(26:47):
season, and Carter Dust the freshman, has it go right through the wickets
and at the one thirteen mark ofthe first period. That's the first goal
of the game. And I meanthat's what North has been struggling with all
season long, is just allowing thoseeasy goals in there. That's definitely not
going to help the statute on thatone, almost allowing five goals a game.
You know this North defense needs totighten up a bit and make sure
(27:08):
they don't allow another easy one likethat. We still have two periods left
to go, and the Old Abesare already looking like they're strong offense that
they have all season. Number sevenMatt Biggens, So Diggins and Waukee getting
(27:30):
the assists on that as well, and so you hear that Diggins getting now
his seventh assist of the Season's upto seventeen points on the years. Well
one nothing here, Old Abes.Fifteen to fifteen left to go in period
number one, Old Abes within here, neutral life, they'll chip in Jason
(27:51):
a down for a moment. Thereis a Tiger Cooner typically plays on the
JB team, but he's getting achance here tonight. And now send ahead
here for the Old Abes. They'vegot a chance in skating it in effectively.
There is sev Eloya. His shotis just over the bar. He
had a good job there by theHuskies to turn them away. But it's
(28:11):
been all Old Abes here to start, is Elle skated ahead with Easton Parker
then has hit a nice hit puton by Madson as it's dumped into the
old Abe zone. They'll go backto retrieve it. Llan Burn now entry
pass along they're trying to find theentry pass Recooniter not there and back to
get it. Are the Huskies intheir own zone fling it up along the
(28:33):
boards, but again sent back inby Madson before the Huskies have to go
back and retreat. Husky's back toit, Cam Mosler up the far side,
Moser carrying in the shot in hasto be sticked down there. Nice
saved by the starter Tonight and Breckenhagenfor Oaklaire Memorial and now a chance to
outlet the other way. Kirtcher upthe far boards, Kircher going in centery
pass deflected, then gets it backhis shot it is snuffed out by Carter
(28:56):
Dustin. He'll cover up for aface off. Yeah, And that's just
a great recognition there by dust anda great way to just bounce back.
I mean, he obviously lay inthat really early shot go, but he's
not letting that affect him, andhe needs to not let that affect him
otherwise they're gonna have a really badgame going forward here, but good job
to just keep a short memory andkeep on moving. Great saves. It's
(29:18):
a team of Memorial who scores aboutfour point one goals a game. They
only allow about a goal and ahalf a game, a little under that.
Yet an early start, nothing leadfor the Old Ages. We're three
minutes in here to period number one. This one stick down at mid ice
on the clearance from north by burnNow the old Ams back into their own
zone, but with it the captainburn sends it over far side there to
Diggins Diggings. Then up the iceit comes entry pass and Kircher's skating in.
(29:41):
Kircher with a chance that is blockeda side nicely by Dust there without
left leg blocker pad and Memorial backto it though back out of neutral ice
is a deflective way. They'll jumpin and go get a change. Yeah,
and maybe talked about this old Agedefense there, especially on the midline.
They do not let anyone crow,so there's not very many shots out
there. As a whistle's called.Diggins was trying to hold up the pucket
(30:04):
and they were going to say atone point he touched it and a hand
pass is called, so this willbring the face off out of his zone
back out to neutral ice. Thirteentwenty five left to go first grade one
nothing Memorial leading North here in theintra city clash. Do the math seventy
five forty seven and two is Memorialall time against North on a six game
(30:25):
winning streak. North had that greatstretch when they got to the state tournament
right back in twenty eighteen twenty nineteen, where they held their own with Memorial.
But the last three or four matchupsbetween these two teams have not been
close. Memorial has dominated them, and see if they continue that here tonight.
North is officially the home team thisevening as the puck in the old
Abe's end, but they're going toskate it out pretty easily there with Matt
(30:47):
Wanke, who had the assist earliersent to the near side centering pastern Pancrats
goes to nobody in particular and Northon to it, but they're having some
trouble digging it out of there.Jade Andrews kinds it up on the boards.
Now it's dug out finally and Northwill be able I think to clear
the zone here. Back it goestoward the defenseman in Easton Parker, the
freshman. This is a young teamin Oak Blair North, a lot of
(31:08):
sophomores and freshmen, and they'll havegrowing pains. I've already had some of
those here this season, as thisis a slot into the north end.
Got a kind of an interesting bounceout in front, and no Husky was
going to get it. Old Ageare almost able to pounce on it there
once again, if Cooner coming in, he's gonna turn around and be gloved
out of the air on a littlerister from a cute angle here on the
(31:32):
near side, and Dust gets anothersave and we'll have a face off on
the Oak player north end to ourleft. Yeah, and that was just
a great move by Dust again gettinga third one in there. The defense
on the side for the North Huskiesare definitely showing their youth here as they've
let a couple of memorial shots nearlyget into the goal and they really should
(31:52):
have been cleared out far before. But like you said, young team,
a team that's he trying to builda winning culture here, so they're just
gonna take those licks and they're goingto realize going forward that they're gonna need
that experience to be able to bea good winning team. Again, Eric,
we only doing a nice job holdingit in here for North as he
skatered all the way into the oldabes end but was unable to get a
shot off there. Now this issent ahead. I don't believe we'll get
(32:14):
an icing here. That'll be wavedoff. North had a chance to play
it a couple different times. I'llgo back to get it though, and
set it up the near boards andMemorial trying to get the interception here on
the near side. Burn had itfor a moment. Now sent back behind
the net to get it for North. Back there was Will Carlson dugout and
now North back out to neutral ice. The pass for Perkins is a little
(32:35):
bit too strong, and Memorial backon to it now at their own end,
sent out to neutral Ice again, flung back in here by oaklair.
North. Memorial goes to get ithere with Nick Madson on the near boards,
Matt's and the defenseman getting some pressurein his own end. Husky's trying
to turn the pressure up. Thisis cleared down Ice and we will get
an icing call this time. Witheleven twenty four left. It's the Old
Abes won the Huskies zero here onninety eight to seven. The fan again
(33:00):
the special things to Dan Price, our producer here this evening for this special
presentation of the Oaklare North cross TownShowdown. So far, pretty good energy,
the student sections going with the blackand white look. It looks like
a black and white cookie out thereright now. If the all black for
the Old Abes faithful and the allwhite for the Oaklair North faithful, hy
(33:24):
quit trying to make me hungry. Here memorials skating in a nice pass back
to the defenseman deflection out in frontof goal. Blake Onoman will get the
official goal there. He deflected itback into the net. He was the
man with the loose change right onthe doorstep. The shot came in from
the point from Nolan Autumn. ButOnhaman's gonna get the credit for the score.
(33:45):
And the Old Abes lead to ziphere with eleven ten left to go
in the first period. And nowjust a great heads up play too,
because that didn't go all the wayin right away, but then Onum just
came in and barely nudged that infor that goal. That's a great job
from him. That's gonna be hissecond of the season now and a fifth
and a fifth point for him.Great work on that memorial offense. Just
(34:09):
keeps on me going. Are gonnagive Diggins and Autumn the assists there?
So two assists now cor Diggins andAtum is credited with the assist official they're
gonna get on Himan for the goalfor a memorial, I do believe,
as he was one of deflective righton the doorstep. So to nothing now
(34:30):
the Old Days lead eleven minutes leftto go in the first period and it
was just a high slot shot fromAutumn that Dust really didn't deal with.
He just kind of let the loosechange out as that rebound attempt and he
was able to easily just kind ofpoke it in. Was on Himan with
his stick right on the doorstep. So fourth goal of the season for Onhoman.
Yeah, he may have lost thattoo when he was trying to find
(34:51):
it well, and you know,to be honest, I think Aumn he
might have taken a goal away fromAutumn there too because that button might have
been trickling into the net anyway. But Onhaman made s there was no doubt.
Old Abe's with it again. Backbehind the end here looking for a
centering passes Wankie now Ak, he'llhand it off for Diggings on the nearboards.
Diggings skating out to the left point, set off there for another defenseman
(35:12):
there and Tucker Lossman back into thecorner though the Huskies poke it away from
a pancrets and it will get itback out to neutral ice trying to go
on the attack here it's at aeast walled another newcomer to this Huskies team
and oother JV players getting a chancetonight. A lot of freshman sophomores in
the lineup tonight, Aid and Caspertrying to skate it up here for the
Huskies on the near side. Casperholes Now tries to dump to the far
(35:36):
corner from the near point, can'tdo so as it's intercepted by burn Burn
with it here for the old Apesback at their own end. They skated
out to neutral ice on the passcoming up toward Kircher. Kircher then dumps
it forward. Dust wants to kindof play it there, then goes back
and the Huskies apper it a littlebit with some contact, wanting a penalty.
They're not going to get it asgoing down behind the play. There
was Kirtscher dumped in here by theHuskies the other way, and this will
(36:00):
be a nicing call on the nineforty five remaining here in the first period.
The old Abes lead to nothing.Well again, we will at intermission
have Domino sponsoring that man. We'llhave that part one of that two part
interview with Mike Sullivan and chance tosit down with him and talk about a
myriad of different things, just theidea that you know, hockey wasn't something
(36:22):
that was really I think on theminds of a lot of people back in
the seventies in terms of radio coverage. How are you going to cover it,
especially you know with the new Hobbsbeing built and all that is.
There's a shot in here from thehigh slot. Rebound attempt off the boards
will go high from Savalloya. OldAP's trying to hold the puck here in
the near corner. Husky's digging afterit as well. Savaloya comes out with
(36:44):
a Savaoya looking for the shot, goes wide of dust on the far side,
preens off the boards on the farside be taken out once again by
the old Abes. That's burn Burnnow back out to the point Old Abes
with a shot from the right pointthat's off a North stick out in front,
and they'll skate it out of there. Mosler was the man to get
to it, and they'll dump itback and get another icing call, and
(37:04):
again North will not be allowed tochange. So this line has been out
there for a while now here forthe Huskies. They will give them that
change, I guess and Jim usedto college jockey, Oh yeah, I'm
usually not getting a change on thatsotheless Old Abbes will hit the face off
(37:25):
of the north end or left twonothing lead here for the Old Abbes.
Nine minutes left to play here inthe first periods, quite halfway through period
number one on what we're gonna endup deeming Mike Sullivan Knight. By the
end of the night, the Huskiesget back on to it here behind their
own net, but the Old AB'spinching down with Madson the defender. They're
(37:46):
content almost play three defenders. Theyhave such good attacking defenders of the Old
Abbes. As it's held up onthe far side by four different players to
Old Abbes two Huskies. There's ashot hi a cute angle and what a
shot. It was Eric Carnett scoresand the old Ames lead three zip with
eight thirty six left to play inthe first Wow, that is just a
(38:08):
pinpoint accurate shot. You're not gonnasee anything as accurate as that. That
nearly hits that that corner bar onthe goal. But man, just not
a great start for the Huskies.Dust is trying his best out there,
but the defense on the north sidehas just been really lacking so far this
game. You're kind of just waitingto see if they wake up in this
(38:29):
otherwise it's going to be a reallypoor showdown out here. It's a heck
of a goal for Carnates to gethis first goal the season. Had four
assists coming in edit Tennant's and Bennimanso Onoman gets an assist, so he's
got two points tonight as well.He had a three zip lead here for
(38:52):
Eau Claire Memorial and still just abouthalfway through this first period, they got
a chance to really turn the screwshere on North early on north back of
their own end, intercepted as theytry to clear it out by Diggins.
Diggins then couldn't hold a puck andit's taken away by the huskies up the
far side. That's Mosler who hashis pocket picked a neutral ice and now
back on to it. Here ispancrats. Pantcrats will dump it in and
(39:14):
they'll old Abes will go get achange here and now the husky's looking to
clear and that goes out to nobodyin particular. We'll see if we get
an icing call here. I don'tthink we will, as the old aves
will go back and play it attheir own end. Appearance comes to burn
Burn with an ice, move outat neutral ice, dumps it ahead.
Here comes the attack on that farside on them with the shot dusk got
a piece of it and turns itaside to the near boards. Husky's trying
(39:36):
to counter, but they're not goingto get to a good job getting back
was lostman there for the old abes. Now he had to go and get
that puck before there was an attackopportunity for the huskies. They'll dump this
one in from the red line,no icing and back to go get it.
Here are the old abes in theirown end. Kircher up the near
boards, and this one might beicing. North is going to try to
get it, but it'll die beforeit gets to the red line on the
(39:58):
other end, they'll skate it ahead. Deflection on that far side. Well,
they're gonna call that icing boys,Sure as X sounded like Parker swent
to gotta stick on that, buthe must have just tapped the ice and
we'll be icing and Memorial gonna faceoff and the north then to our left.
I was gonna say it seemed likeit changed trajectory a little bit as
soon as he swung that. Well, you saw it and I heard it.
I mean, you know, we'retwo parts of the refs here.
(40:19):
At least I know I'm not I'mnot losing it. If somebody maybe you're
just confirming to make it seem likeI'm not losing it. There's a potential
trip and we got our first penaltyof the game, which will be brought
to you by Hurtel law As goingdown on that play was Eric Carna's for
Oaklaire Memorial tripping call coming up,and we'll see who's going for the Huskies
here. Man. This will beCarson Kohler who will head to the penalty
(40:45):
box. So Cohler to the boxat the it's say nine fifty two mark,
and the two minute penalty power playcoming up here for the Old Apes
again. That is brought to youby Heurtel lom. If you get in
(41:07):
trouble when accused of breaking the lawhigher Heurtel Law for experienced criminal defense.
That's Hurtel Law, the law firmyou want on your side. Already a
chance here for Memorial in the beginningof this power play, weren't able to
get that shot in. And nowit's Diggings here on the far point.
Diggins skating in right out in front. Chance for a wrap around here for
pancrats, but he couldn't quite getto the near side of the cage.
(41:28):
Now they send it far side anopportunity. This one's risted and deflected up
into the netting on the shot fromDiggins. And so far the Old Apes
were dominating and full strength play Danpower play. I mean they're just knocking
on the doorstep for goal number four. Oh yeah they are, and it's
the ranks not on the wall yetfor this. But man, if North
does not wake up, and Imean they look a lot better defensively as
(41:50):
this game has gone on, Butif they don't wake up, this could
be really really bad going forward forthem. However, they do have a
bunch of young players going in thisgame. Our point this is Diggings.
Diggings back to the high slot toburn, Old Abes trying to threaten here
to get goal number four of thisfirst period. They'll dump it in Pancrets
behind the cage, the shot thegoal for Nick Madson glove side. What
(42:14):
a pass that was behind the netby Pancrets and Madson puts it in for
his sixth goal of the season.Fourth different player to score here for memorial
tonight. It's for nothing, OldApes, and that's that offense that I've
been telling you about. The oldAbes are just able to get it around,
and I mean you can see intheir warm ups too. They just
have great chemistry together and are willingto get the puck out to anyone.
(42:36):
There's no one holding on to thepuck for too long. You always see
him pass it off just as beforea defender gets to them. And just
like that, Old Days are pickingup right where they left off in that
last tournament. Mid Manson. Andsince the number tens and Nimber two den,
(42:58):
then so Burn. We'll also getan assists there as well, and
a power play goal here for theOld Abes has it now at a four
to nothing lead here over the Huskies. Three even strength goals and a power
play goal to go with it,and as the Husky's just trying to find
some kind of life here as that'scleared out by the Huskies or neutral ice,
and the Old Apes back to getit, trying to go with it
(43:20):
and attack the other way. Ontomanat a pass just go past his outstretched
stick at the opposing blue line.Another deflection there near the blue line.
Onaman will go to get this one. They'll gain the zone. Then Ooman
has it poked away and stolen hereon the near side by Tilman for the
Huskies. There's a shot from outsideof the zone and dumped in for Jayden
Andrews, and now the Old Abe'sback on to it to neutral ice,
(43:43):
but it's taken away by Mosler.Mosler dumps in Old Abes back to chase
it again, and we got alittle bit of neutral ice back in fourth
play as Carter Hayes goes back toget it here for Memorial four nothing,
Old Abes five to ten left togo. First period dump back in here
by the Huskies. Old Abbes willgo back to chase it down with Hayes
again. Hayes up the far boards, a chance to outlet it, but
(44:04):
it gets caught up in the officialon the far side. Trumpline will dump
it in here for the Old Abes. As we see the Old Abbes go
deeper into their lines and his shotgoes right in on dusk, we'll get
a face off to his left.Four fifty six to go here in the
first period, and so far seemsthe intensity has been only on one side
here for the Old Apes. However, it's picking up for the Huskies.
(44:25):
You're down four nothing. It looksleak, but you gotta keep pushing and
get back into this thing. Thisis an inner city rivalry matchup here.
Now. You wonder if you're gonna, you know, see a hard check,
gonna see something that you know thattrip really wasn't much in that,
but just something to get some energygoing, even if it's a penalty against
your squad, you know, puta big hit on somebody and wake wake
(44:45):
your squad up a little bit. Here go the Old Apes the other right.
Colin Bill with it here, he'staken down from behind. No arm
in the air for any of theofficials, and the Huskies will escape out
with at Parker's passing, and hetried to outlet the attack over the far
side to have Suleman is intercepted anddeflected, and now the Old Abes have
it up the far side neutral icesthis will be off side is unable to
(45:05):
hold his own. Was Diggins onthe attack taking that in There was trout
line and just had it behind hima little bit. Diggins was trying to
tow drag. Couldn't do it fornothing. Old AB's with the lead four
twenty four left to go first period, and you're not gonna see this out
of stats, but that was allcaused by Mosler. He's gonna try and
land a hit there, however, made him hesitate and all on all he
(45:27):
created that fraction. Old Abes willwin the face off and take it into
the oat player north end. Alittle bit better defense here. I think
you can see him picking up alittle bit for the Huskies. But now
back out to the point. Anotheropportunity. A deflected SHOT's gonna go to
the New York corner. That onecame off this stick rather of autumn on
the shot from the right point.Husky's trying to get this buck out of
(45:47):
the zone, but holding it upnicely there for a memorial is Tygankooner on
the far side. This is Burntrying to pinch down. Now pinching right
at the point is lost mean lost, my holds his zone back toward Burn.
Burn on the far boards. Burnlooking for a centering pass, but
he's held up nicely there in thefar corner. That's staying over there,
(46:08):
who's got a stick up in hisbusiness? Now Burn those skates that around
the near boards out to the blueline, they hold his zone deflected out
in front, went off the skateof Savalloya into the far corner and grab
here by the Huskies as they justwant to clear and do anything they can.
Huskies will clear, but it goesright on to the stick of an
old Abe coming off the bench andKercher. Then an intercepted pass and a
(46:30):
chance here for the Huskies is theysend it in with Tillman, but gonna
have to chase after it quickly hereas the old Abes get back nicely there
in defense. Now a shot outfrom the point here for the Huskies is
deflected, goes back down ice towardthe north end. This will not be
icing and the Husky's left to goget it with three to zero two left
to go in the first period andthe four nothing Old Abess lead. This
(46:50):
puck is stopped by one of theofficials here with his skates unintentionally dumped in,
then by the old Ames. Thatwas a Kircher jumping in. They
go tag up on the off sideand once again it's sent out by the
Huskies. They're just trying to getthe fuck out of their own end at
this point. They don't really carehow they relieve the pressure, just that
they relieve the pressure. But backinto the north end once again, Old
(47:12):
Abes are trying to hold it up. Pancrats taken out about three different Huskies.
Now a shot from the left pointis sent aside by Dust. Another
opportunity here for Oa Claire memorial.Pancrets out in front, centering passes deflected
another shot, Dust gets a savethere, beautifully done wrap around chance.
He gets a save. Schmburger therewas right on the doorstep, unable to
put it in for the Old Apes. Now another opportunity for a memorial Kercher
(47:34):
with the spin move centering pass buckdeflected right out in the low slot,
but it's cleared. But not outof the zone, Diggings on the far
point, Diggings skating and diggings lookingfor the centering pass. Still can't find
one deflected pass now and it's clearedout of there by the Huskies and they
avoid disaster a little bit. Afifth goal is with two minutes left to
play here in the period, I'llmean no icing on the clearance. Yeah,
And that was just an that wasjust an inspirational thing to see out
(47:58):
there. I mean, that wasa lot of really close enough close shots
and Dust was able to defend alot of them, and if not them,
the defenders. So we're starting tosee the defenders for North actually come
back into this game with some pressurein the shot in the goal. Blake
Onoman does it again, his secondgoal of the game. It's five nothing
Old Ages with one thirty eight leftto play here in the first Just as
(48:22):
I said that, just as Isaid that, the Old Abes showing exactly
why there's such an offensive monster inthe Big Rivers Conference there gained their fifth
goal on this came their fifth goalof the game of this first period here.
This is we're starting to see twingesof that uh that Rice Lake game.
(48:43):
I believe it was Crenants and sevenMatt Dibbins. I think Pancrats and
what do they have Diggings with theassists there, I believe, And so
Pancrets now has a total of threepoints in this game. Diggins has three
(49:07):
assists in this game. And Onamanwith his second goal of the game five
nothing Old Ades, it comes upa fifteen twenty two mark if you did
not hear it clearly. Apologies forthose audio issues here and a deflection out
in front another chance for the OldAdes that could have been number six there
right on the stick of Colin Bill. But a good shop I does,
(49:27):
I mean he does has been undera ton of pressure as the Old Abes
go back to get this one. They will call this icing on the clearance
for North and they are just happyto get the buck anywhere not near their
goal. Five nothing Memorial League. And that's the thing with defense here in
hockey. It's one part your goalie, it's another part your defenders up there.
You need to have both working intandem if you're gonna be a great
(49:51):
defense. I mean that's what theOld Ads have done all this time too.
There's only been one hundred and eighttotal shots against the Old Ades this
season, just the season. Yeah, they again, they just it's part
of the just holding onto the puckand they're attacked. They're attacking. I
mean, their offense is their bestdefense, right, I mean, just
defenders don't have to do a wholeheck of a lot. Here's an opportunity
for North the other way. That'sa nice skating from Tommy Perkins to get
(50:15):
around a couple of defenders. Hadto take the shot from a tough angle
here on the near boards, buthe put it on net and made Breckenhagen
have to do something back there. He does make the save the one.
We'll get a face off on theend of our right, and you still
have fifty seven seconds here, soyou could do something to kind of maybe
spark the offense going into the secondperiod. So the face off will come
(50:35):
in the Old Abs end and theywill win. The face off will memorial.
As we are under a minute leftto play in the first period.
Five nothing Old Abes. This ishis dumped ahead Old Abes have it.
Centering pass here from pancrats is interceptive, but then taken right back here by
an autumn on the near side.Look for the centering pass. It was
deflected. Autumn trying to hold thezone out in the high slot. He
will over on the far side toBurn. Burn hands it off. Deflected
(50:59):
pass. Still go back and getit with Autumn. Back to Burn at
the point. Now skates out tothe high slot back near side here for
a lostman. Back to Burn,Burn right side, now for Autumn.
Autumn back to Burn Memorial holding ontwenty seconds left off the crossbar in out
of there, went off of Dust'sback and then kind of trickled away.
What a shot and if it wasan inch lower, we're talking about goal
(51:21):
number six of this game. Asthe old Abes have it back, then
after the clearance they'll skate it inhere as there goes pancrats. His shot
goes wide. Four seconds remain inthe period. Can Memorial get off another
shot? It does not look likethey will, and sure enough that will
end the first period. And itis all old player Memorial here in the
first And I'll tell you what, damn that is pretty dominant. Oh yeah,
(51:49):
so a memorial. I think weheard what fifteen shots north with three?
Is that right? That's when Iheard. That's what I heard anyway,
And so see I remember when Ihear all the shots, all those
kind of things as well, SoMemorial with fifteen shots and five goals off
of those shots. Nothing for Northin that first period. I mean,
pretty dominant there from North. Forthe Huskies, I mean they just need
(52:10):
that spark. I mean there's someenergy to get it. I'm not saying
that's going to necessarily create scoring chancesor anything like that. I mean it
does feel like there's a disparity betweenthese teams, and that's I know,
Dan, when you watch games, right, that's when things can get a
little bit chippy out there, canI mean, things get a little intense
when you get a game that's thisout of hand this early, especially with
rivals too. There are multiple timesthat I've seen in high school games where
(52:34):
you have these two rivalry, tworival teams, and sometimes there's gonna be
a blowout. That's just how gamesgo, and that's when things get really
bad, really physical, and usuallyyou see a lot more people in the
penalty boxes. Yes, certainly do. We will see how that all goes
down in the second period. Fornow, the Old Abes maintain a five
nothing lead over Oak Claire North Pancratsscores first on them and twice Carnates.
(53:00):
It's Madsen once as well. We'llrecap all the scoring when we come back
as part of our Domino's Intermission report. Hey, we'll be back after the
intermission. Now would be a greattime to to get a stretch in order
a pizza from Dominoes. They'll deliverstraight to your door so you'll be ready
for the next period. Part ofour Domino's Intermission is also our discussion with
(53:21):
Mike Sullivan here a little bit aboutthe history of Oaklaire hockey, as well
as the press box is now officiallybeen dedicated to the Hall of Fame broadcaster
and Mike Sullivan. That's all comingup and just a bit plenty to go
here on our Dominoes Intermission Report. At the end of one it's Oaklair Memorial
five, Oaklaire North zero and you'relistening to it right here on ninety eight
(53:42):
seven the fan and back in onthe Domino's Intermission Report, we are joined
by the guests of honor tonight, the special guest in Mike Sullivan, getting
the press box dedicated to you andnamed and all that kind of thing.
Mike, It's always good to seeyou. Always good to get a chance
to talk sports and hockey or whateverit is that we talk about. It's
always good to have some time withyou. And let's just talk about sort
(54:06):
of that in general, just kindof how this all came about, you
know, getting the press box namedafter you. I know there was a
number of people who had some influenceon that, but how did it come
about? And what does it meanto you to have your name up on
a spot that you spent a wholeheck of a lot of time in in
your broadcast career. You mean, there's a press box. When I first
started, there wasn't a press box, and I wore my dad's Alaska parka
(54:30):
and called games and there's it's nice. I mean, as far as people,
I need to think, I needto thank Harry Herte, my best
friend, first and foremost, gota lot of it done. And Pat
Robecky, who's on the Center IceClub board of directors, did a lot,
Pat Newkirk, who's the director offacilities here, all of them and
(54:52):
everybody else. I really do appreciateit. I mean, I'm not one
that seeks this type of publicity, but it's wonderful. It's cool. To
see certainly, And let's talk.I want to talk a little bit about,
you know, the start. Youmentioned they're not being a press box
when you started here, and that'ssomething I think a lot of people don't,
(55:14):
you know, maybe who are newto the area in the last even
ten to fifteen years, even myself, don't really realize kind of what hockey
was when you started broadcasting, becauseobviously it's in a great position now,
but when you started broadcasting, hockeywas not you know, maybe as covered
as much or that kind of thing. So talk about those early years when
you decided to make the you know, to make the decision to cover hockey.
(55:36):
What was that like, to notonly get it covered, but to
see it kind of develop in thearea. It was a fight to get
it covered. I mean my bosswho came thirty years ago, Wayne Phillips,
hockey was already established then. Yeah, established, it's too strong a
word. It was on the air. He didn't believe in it and didn't
(55:58):
believe it should be covered. Iwasn't you know, Hockey has never been
my favorite sport, and people don'tbelieve that. I mean, my favorite
game is the one that's next andso forth, and so on. But
you know the early years, yeah, I mean the Ed Paulson and Brent
Crooks and the Porky Manson was thecoach at North and Bill Mitchell and his
(56:24):
Mark Mitchell his kid at Memorial. And December twenty sixth and nineteen seventy five
was the first Memorial North game andMemorial got a goal from Randy Lee,
who then broke his leg and neverplayed again. And North's first goal was
scored by Steve Marzinki, and theyestablished they dominated the early years North did
(56:50):
and then Memorial took over. Atone time they were the only inter city
inter city rivalry had a losing recordagainst each other. They both had losing
records because of using ineligible players. They were forty and forty two against each
other, with some a bunch ofties. But I remember that very vividly
(57:14):
because of the nineteen ninety one andI don't remember the year exactly. Ryan
Goodmanson from North and Sean Bader fromMemorial both declared ineligible that year, cost
them both, you know, somegames. So it's been quite a rivalry
and there were a lot of closegames and at a couple of overtime games
(57:36):
early on that don't matter now,but anyway, Memorial has dominated in the
recent years. You know, youlook at it too, and I remember
when I moved here and I thinkmaybe filled in a game or two for
you, and they had the littlewhite kind of I don't know what it
was, a shed shack type ofthing that was up there as well.
Now to look at what it isnow, it has you know, obviously
(57:58):
Hobbs isn't a huge arena or anything, but the press box at least has
sort of a you know, abit of a college feel, maybe even
a little bit of an NHL field, And that's got to be kind of
neat to see just what the peoplewho get to broadcast or get to you
know, bring a video stream toeverybody, or cover the teams get to
now kind of have as part ofthe Hobbs experience. The ice shack was
wonderful, and the ice shack wasgood for me. It wasn't good for
(58:22):
everybody else obviously, and that's true. I mean, you know, uh,
oh my, I can't I'm blankingon his name now. The athletic
director at UW O Claire who DanSchumacker. Yeah, thank you Dan for
I mean Dan Schumacher was instrumental ingetting the press box made and I thank
(58:45):
him for that effort. And Idon't know, Yeah, it's not a
big rink, but you know,I was recently interviewed by the guy from
Wisconsin who said, you know, talk about Sam Staying and Jake Dowell and
Tie Amberson and all these kids fromEuclaire have gone on to play for a
big time in the NHL and theEurope and so forth. I'm not gonna
(59:09):
say I don't care, because Ido. But I care most about what
they do in high school, andI care most about Memorial and North and
Regius too. What they do hereis most important. That's part one of
our Domino's Intermission interview with Mike Sullivan, the guest of honor here tonight,
(59:30):
as the press box here at HobbsIce Arena is dedicated in Mike's honor.
We'll have part two in intermission numbertwo, but until then we'll be back
with the Domino's Intermission report here atthe end of one between North and Memorial.
Right after this, Domino's peached inwith Mike to congratulate Mike Sullimon for
forty years. He's been ninety eightseven the fan. Hi, welcome back
(59:53):
in here to the Hobbs Ice Arena. Is indeed a hockey night at Hobbs
Speak and Dan Zon's with you.Special thanks to Mike Sullivan for joining us
during the Domino's intermission report. Heyagain, this would be a great time
to go out and get a pizzafrom Domino's. The'll deliver straight to your
door so you'll be ready for thenext period. The only thing I'm concerned
(01:00:15):
about, Dan is I'm hoping thatthey're open when our game's over. Oh
yeah, that's all right, That'sall I'm worried about right now, because
somebody, somebody wasn't prepared to doa high school game tonight in terms of
I didn't eat before the game.So yeah, this is a broadcasters problem
we have. But you see, that's the real kind of stuff I should
have talked about with Mike, right. But it's the thing that happens so
(01:00:35):
frequently than not, like you justsuddenly it's like suddenly five o'clock, you're
like, oh, I got toget ready for this game. Yeah,
and then and then all of asudden eight o'clock, kits, You've been
talking about Domino's pizza and you go, all right, well I made I
made a poor decision with my life, I guess, and not getting that.
But nonetheless, this would be agreat time for you listening at home
to go out and get a Domino'spizza. As part of our intermission report,
all right, five nothing here infavor of Memorial. Pancrats scored the
(01:00:59):
first goal of the game at theone thirteen mark. He was assisted by
Diggins and Wankie on that first goal. Then at the five to fifty mark,
Onoman would score, assisted by OttomanDiggins. He make it two nothing.
A couple minutes later eight to twentyfour mark of the first Carnate's assisted
by Onoman, he would get goalnumber three of this one. And then
on the power play, Matson wouldscore for Oaklair Memorial on a beautiful shot
(01:01:22):
there assisted by Pancrats and Burns burnexcuse me. And then at the fifteen
to twenty two mark, Onoman wouldscore, assisted by again by Pancrats and
Diggings. So make it five nothingMemorial. So Dan, you look at
the second period as the ice he'salmost ready here for period number two.
Like we said at the end ofthe first period, nor it's got to
figure out a way to get someenergy in this game because they got their
(01:01:45):
backs up against the wall and theycouldn't figure out anything going forward. We
saw maybe a couple good moments.Tommy Perkins had that nice little kind of
individual effort to get a shot ongoal, but they were outshot fifteen to
three. Something's got to change forNorth. I don't know exactly how they
get that change to happen, butit's got to happen relatively soon. No,
Yeah, they need to change agood bit, mainly because they're just
(01:02:07):
not really community. There's it's ahard thing to communicate on the ice,
but you've practiced with these guys allyear long, and to go out there
and not really know where everyone is, not really play team hockey. You
just can't do that. You're notgonna be expected to win against one of
the better teams in this big Riversconference. And that starts on the offensive
end, just kind of looking ateach other, communicating running plays, making
(01:02:29):
sure everyone's on there. And that'sthe team captain's job to make sure everyone
is running like that. And ifthey're able to get that to get some
of that intensity back, maybe theycould somehow sneak back into this game and
make it a pretty good shootout. The bad news for Oaklaire North is that
Oaklare Memorial is outscoring teams twenty oneto three so far this season in second
(01:02:51):
periods, which is what we're aboutto see coming up here in this second.
So I five nothing lead for theOld Age again, especially thanks to
Mike Sullivan for joining us as partof our Domino's intermission. You've been meeting
some folks and talking to some folksDan And for me it was about oh
ten eleven years ago when I wasmeeting and meeting all these folks here as
well. But you know, it'sa big night obviously for Mike being here.
(01:03:13):
But you know, Harry Hotel hasbeen, you know, great instrumental
in getting this press box name. But you know, this is one of
those nights where you come out tothe game and it's usually like this for
a North Memorial game. But tonight, I mean, you got you know,
you not only got Mike here, you got Woody Wall, who broadcasted
Blue Golds games and local games foryears. They give them free chili at
press boxes. The football press boxat Glenwood City show up and there's just
(01:03:36):
bowls of chili ready for to go. Those kind of folks, obviously Justice
Cleveland, right, Nick Tabart,Bob Brad, everybody who's been anybody in
sports media for the last twenty tothirty years and beyond that is here tonight.
It just kind of has sort ofthat it's like almost like the movers
and shakers are here tonight. That'swhat it feels like, doesn't it.
(01:03:57):
It feels there's been so many familiarfaces let's come by in so many faces
that I've just met, actually, but it's been just such an important night
to honor a guy that's been sucha significant part of the sports community and
just the community in general, tocome out here and just finally give him
some really good recognition and see everyonecheer for him, everyone be happy that
(01:04:18):
he's out here tonight. And it'soh nice to just have everyone around here
again. Our friend, our friendDave Deville over at wb iz FM on
Z one hundred kind of helped putsome of this together as well. And
and Mike always wants to remind you, and he probably reminds Dave quite a
bit too, that you know, when when wb iz FM Z one hundred
came on the air originally that aireda lot of local sports, and Mike
(01:04:42):
had a show on that as well, So he's he's one of the predecessors
as well for our friend Dave overat Z one hundred as well, and
especial thanks to to Dan Price, who's producing this game. He's been producing
games at iHeartRadio since I mean almostsince, not quite since Mike was there,
but but for a whole heck goalong time. He did stout games
for a number of years, Menominegames, and he still does a number
(01:05:03):
of games also. He's been aroundfor years and years and years, and
he's about he's as Mike was misterreliable as a play by play guy,
Dan's mister reliable as a as aproducer as well. So you kind of
it's kind of like we're getting thehold of the band back together a little
bit for the little reunion. That'skind of fun, isn't it. Oh
Yeah, it's like what was thatone show that just came back finally again
(01:05:25):
as they had a friends reunion thatthing came Yeah, I mean, you
know, i mean, let's justyou know, let's rehash some stuff as
uhcause I'm sure some comedian once said. But nonetheless, somewhere I if nothing
lead here for the old Aves overthe Huskies. A little bit of discussion
here before we get underway for periodnumber two. The Old Abes will move
(01:05:46):
from left to right on your radiodial. The Huskies will move from right
to left on your radio dial herein period number two. Again, the
Huskies are the home team officially fortonight's game. They will play the return
matchup these two in about a monthor so. It'll be back here at
Hobbs on February second. In fact, it is exactly a month I could
(01:06:08):
have done that math before. Itis exactly a month of February second.
We're paid to talk about sports, not do math for sports. Well,
our old friend Jake Boostram, whoused to do stout games with me,
would always tell me, Pete, stop doing math on the air, and
I would, you know, bedoing a football game or whatnot. I
said, Jake, that's kind ofpart of the deal. You have to
do that. But nonetheless, yeah, well, we'll do as little maths
(01:06:29):
as we need to, I suppose, as we are back in rolling here
from Hobbs Ice Arena, and itis an early chance here for the Old
Abes. I get a deflection intothe end to our right. The Husky
end as back to get it andflying into the boards there that new sheet
of ice went blake Onoman, andnow the Old Abes lose the fuck and
the Huskies bring it out to neutralice, but it's once again stolen away
(01:06:51):
by Mattson. Matt'son over on thefar side here for and Onoman skating in
the shot goes over dust. Hedidn't know much about that one. It
was a good shot and high offthe glass on the near side after the
far point shot that go we're onthat side now is Burn Burn with it
in the attacking end. Burn skatingin from the left point Burn with the
backhand pass off on the side thereto Pancrats. Pankrat's now out to the
(01:07:12):
near point. This SHOT's gonna gowell wide and dumping that in. There
was Madson here from the point nowtrying to chase after it is Pankrats.
It'll be scooped out of there bythe Huskies. They'll send it ahead,
clear it out of there by eastonParker they'll wave off icing and the old
Ages will have to go back andget it and be into our left.
Now send in here and easily stickthe side by Hagen. Not really a
(01:07:34):
shot, just more of a passalmost toward him from Mooli here on the
near point. Now on a chancefor the Old Abes the other way.
The shot from Wankie to the leftpoint is deflected back behind the cage.
He'll go back to get it though. Over on the far boards. His
pass ahead for Schenberger is a littlebit too strong, and now once again
the Old Apes trying to hold itbehind the net looking for a centering pass.
(01:07:57):
The buck just kind of floating outto the left point and it's intercepted
here by the Huskies. They're goingto try to attack the other way again.
Dumped in right on Hagen is nowan opportunity here skating nicely is Wally.
Wally then gets dumped behind the play. No arm in the air from
the officials, and the Old Abeswill grab the puck. They'll try to
clear the zone here with ottumnrolling.Autumn here on the near side loses the
(01:08:20):
puck once again. Go back toit though as lossman here for the Old
Apes, and now they got iton the far side out of their own
end. Here's digging skating it allthe way and dig it's still with it.
We'll looking for the toe dragon. He just lost the puck out in
that low slot, but back onto it now is autumn skating and autumn
with the shot and dust it's hisblocker on it and blocks it aside.
Old Abes back on to the puck, but back out to neutral ice,
(01:08:44):
and it seems like this Husky offensehas kind of gotten a little bit life
here after a bit of a sunstarts there, a strong start there,
but this intensity's really picked up fromthis Husky team. A five to nothing
lead here for the Old Ages, fourteen twenty three left play here in the
period, dust trying to send thepuck aside, I was shot from the
Old Abs and a goal as acentering pass came out to Nick Madson and
(01:09:06):
he scores for the second time heretonight in the Old Aves have a six
to nothing lead over the Huskies withfourteen eighteen left to go in the second
period, and now is not thetime to bend the head. If you're
the Huskies, you still have plentyof time to come back into this.
Looking and looking at this in thelooking at this in the inspirational mindset here.
(01:09:28):
But this North team definitely looked alot more alive than they did in
that first period. They were makingsome big hits on the Old Ages.
I don't know if that was justpure just rivalry there or what's that was
Nick Mansonnton, Kevin Bennett. SoTigan Kunnert is the man who gets the
(01:09:55):
assist along with Savaloya and Matson withthe and a six to nothing lead here
for the Old Abes. There youhave the announcement and again the Old Apes
just too much, too much pressureon Oaklair North right now they have dominated
tonight's matchup, trying to go backto over five hundred in conference play as
(01:10:17):
that clearance for the Old Abes willbe icing and we'll get a face off
at the end to our left, the Huskies, if they can win a
face off, maybe get a chancehere at something moving forward. Chip with
Falls of course sit four and ohcoming into tonight's play New Richmond and Hudson
at three and one. Then you'vegot Memorial m nominee at two and two
of the Big Rivers conference standings withNorth at one and three, they're tied
(01:10:38):
with River Falls. Rice Lake iswinless so far in conference. Played on
for it. Yeah, they've struggledlittle bit this season. Here another young
team just trying to make their waythrough this. Now a chance for Bill
the other way for Oaklair Memorial. He had an opportunity there, I thought
for a breakaway for a moment, lost the puck. The Huskies back on
(01:10:58):
to it. This is Tommy Perkins, Perkins centering it around and losing his
stick there for a moment. Hiscar dusts. He's not gonna go back
and get it yet. You gottaget this puck out of here, does
Oaklair North? And they finally will. Now they've got the stick back.
There comes a shot four. There'llbe no icing here. Good job by
the Huskies to get down to thatone. That's Logan Hesselman chasing it down,
but he has his puck taken awayrelatively easily by Kertcher. Up come
(01:11:21):
the Old Aggs the other way.The shot, what a shot from Dylan.
Bernie shoots it up where the cookiesgo. And it's now seven and
nothing. You're in favor of theOld Aggs with twelve thirty one left to
go in the second. Wow,we've seen quite a few good shots tonight,
and that one by Aslaman just absolutelyinsane. How to just being able
(01:11:46):
to hit that corner shot so frequently. That's not twice that's happened this game
twice. You usually don't see thatin one game at all in the season.
They are hitting the pipes, theyare hitting the corners very easily.
I mean, that was about asgood of a shot as you're ever gonna
see. Nassist so Burn with thegoal. Burn with his first goal of
(01:12:13):
the game, second point of thegame. He had to assist earlier as
well. Seven nothing Old Abes twelvefifteen to go here in the second period.
At this point we will get arunning clock at some point if this
margin continues. A six goal leadis what you need for that. And
sometimes there will be teams that willagree to do that in the second period.
Other times, officially, I believethey do not need to do that
(01:12:34):
until the third, so likely we'llsee the clock stop at this point.
This shot gonna go wide of dustfrom the left point autumn as he skated
it in Old Abes. They haveturned the pressure up and they got a
message for the rest of the bigrivers tonight. Taking out some aggression from
some early season loss, especially atRiver Falls loss. That's one that is
(01:12:56):
a little bit of a head scratcher. Who talked with Bob Radovitch before that
game he was calling that one,and he said it was just one of
those where they kind of sat back, you know, River Falls got a
cheap goal and then they kind ofpacked it in defensively and the Old Abes
didn't really have much going. Buttonight different story. And as Madson tries
to clear it here for the OldApes, he goes back to the old
clare north end. Is Mosler ontoit, Golzer sends it off on the
(01:13:16):
far side. Deflected pass here, maybe a chance for Andrews. Andrews can't
get to it though, and it'scleared out of the Old Abes end by
pancrets, but right back to theHuskies at the other side. Neutral ice
play and the foe check will deflecta puck up into the stands. No
injuries and a souvenir for a youngster. I want a nice kid. I
(01:13:38):
mean, you got to give thatto somebody and get like a you know,
you gotta get a free hot dogor something. Oh yeah, I
mean come on, I mean I'mall about returning the puck, but I
want something for it. Hey,that landed in his left he should get
something right, Old Abes. Ithink we'll call that a win for the
(01:13:59):
face off for this one shot inwide of dust from Pankrets skating it into
the zone. Pankret's back on toit here in the near side. Could
pass out to the point, butit goes off the stick of Hayes and
back to the Old Abe's end ashe was unable to handle that pass out
of the blue line. Now aturnover here a chance is Perkin skates in
centering pass is deflected out of theirgood job recovering by Hayes to deflect that
one, and now back out toPankrets. Pankrets skating it in and he
(01:14:21):
skated in just a little bit toolate. Is in the zone a little
bit early? There is Bett wankyand it will be a face off out
of the zone here for both sides. And this offense just been keeping up
with it even in a rivalry matchup. You expected to be a little bit
tighter in here, but man hasthe old age just not release that foot
(01:14:43):
off the pedal yet, And Idon't expect them to do that the restless
game. I'm nine point fifty togo here in the second period. The
clock is now running. The runningclock is on here from Hobbs Ice Arena,
the seven to nothing lead here forthe Old Abes. Good to see
Mike again. Mike gonna head outa little bit early here tonight, it
looks like, but it's just areally great night to see him. With
this press box dedicated. Remember wehave a period number two, or at
(01:15:04):
least, I should say, parttwo of our interview with Mike talking about
just the different coverage and all thedifferent things he sees. Talks a little
bit about the Blue Golds trip tothe National Championship Game in Lake Placid in
twenty thirteen, So make sure hestay tuned for part two of our interview
with Mike Suliman on the Domino's intermissionreport for intermission number two coming up and
(01:15:25):
what could be just a few minutesbecause the clock is now running. We're
about to ten hundred nine minutes leftto go in the second period, Old
Abe with a seven nothing lee? What Ah put on there by Burne and
we talked about Nord need to putsome hits on instead. It's the Old
Abes who put the hits on thereand now up toward Kooner. For the
Old Abes, he is unable todo much with it though it's grabbed by
Oaklare north and cleared out of thezone. But back to get it for
the Old Abes is Burne lifted hereto the nearer side to Kircher. Kircher
(01:15:51):
then passes ahead an opportunity on thefar side for burn. Burn lays it
up for Sabaeoya. Sabaloya with ashot and the goal Sadaloyas scores and now
that is the sixth different Old Abeto get on the score sheet from the
goals standpoint here tonight it is eightnothing now in favor of the Old Apes
(01:16:12):
and Savalloy. And the way hecan move on that ice for being a
six foot four giant of a humanout there, is absolutely stupendous. And
he makes it all worthwhile, gettingall the way across the ice and just
putting it right in there. Andman, has this really really busted open
for the Old Apes? Indeed ithas. He'll stop the clock on the
(01:16:33):
goal, but the clock will runafter this unless we have the pennel to
here seventeen assisting in the two bendinso Burn will get the assists. Burn
with a goal and now to assistson the night as well in a big
hit behind the play. Once again, the old Abes are just putting the
(01:16:56):
hurt on the Huskies in every waypossible. That from Autumn behind the play,
finishing off those checks as well asAutumn going to the penalty box.
I think he is and uh Iget him for charging, I believe,
and that will put Oaklare North onthe power play. This's their chance,
big chance here. I know thisis a very good defense here, but
(01:17:20):
you lose a person, you losea big part of that. Especially Autumn
too. It's been great defensively tonightAutumn is in the penalty box and a
power play chance here for Oaklaire North. Head contact is the official pall.
(01:17:43):
I was gonna say it kind oflooked like he had maybe hit him in
the back of the head there whenhe hit him from behind. Big point
of emphasis for college hockey this yearhas been elbowing. I think I've seen
at least one elbowing penalty in everycollege hockey game I've seen this year.
So yeah, they want to eliminatethat head contact as much as chance for
a shorty the other way here forOld Claire Memorial as pancrats had it into
(01:18:04):
the corner, but tied up bysome huskies. Nothing really set up yet.
Now Old Abbes are going to skatethis one out. Boy. They
had a chance almost set up alittle bit of an offense with the Dallas
skater, but they skated all theway back into their own end with Nick
Madson, and he'll send it aheadand clear it out of there on the
power play again. This power playis brought to you once again by Hertel
(01:18:28):
Law. If you get in troublewhen it used of breaking the law high
or Hertel Law for experienced criminal defense. That's Hertel Law, the law firm
you want on your side. Husky'strying to set up the power play,
but they are having no luck hereat all. This one cleared down ice
by the old Abe almost on netskating after it is Carnates here for the
Old Abes. Carnates has a chancepotentially as he gets now pressured in the
(01:18:48):
near corner by the huskies, andonce again the husky's trying to dig it
out of There's about three white jerseysover there, including Parker, Swintick and
others be sent over to the farside of Parker going to skate this one
up or at least try to herefor the Huskies. He'll dump it ahead,
loved out of the air by theOld Abes Lossman Lostman toward the near
corner again just trying to clear it. As there's only twenty seconds left here
(01:19:10):
on the power play for the Huskiesand they have had absolutely nothing set up
on this power play chance. They'llhack away at Lossman for the Old Ages,
who's trying to clear it from thezone but was sent back in no
off side here. Only eight secondsremain on the power play and the Huskies
pinched down and get anything going theycan't nice pass out of there by Ontaman
to want Wanky Wanky, now gainingthe zone, takes on three Huskies himself
(01:19:32):
and finally has a fuck taken awayand we're back to even strike with six
fourteen left to go here in thesecond period, Old Abs lead eight nothing
here over the Huskies and we're kindof getting onto shutout potential here, which
would be just another one that they'vehave multiple shutouts this season. This defense
has been absolutely insane for this OldAbes team, and they're gonna try and
(01:19:55):
make They're trying to scare the restof that big Rivers conference into showing showing
some re because obviously they dropped acouple of them, but this is going
to mean a lot for them toshow exactly what kind of firepower they have.
That goes high from Onoman there onthe attack for the Old Abbes.
Now back out to neutral ice.In fact, all the way down the
Old Abes and down to our leftthey'll go recover it. Ottoman, now
(01:20:15):
skating on the far boards, hasa deflected shot that goes wide of dust
on his stick side and into theNew York corner. It'll be chased down
by the Huskies as they try toclear the zone, but the Old Abes
back onto it. Burn Over onthe far boards, burn trying to skate
around a defender, pokes it ahead. Old Abes want to go get a
change here. At least there's acouple of guys who've been out there for
a while. Schomberger will come tothe bench and now in for him is
(01:20:38):
Madson on the change. Madson putssome pressure on but it's finally taken away
by the Huskies. Good outlet passhere over on the far side, opportunity
for Anderson. Anderson for the Huskiesloses the puck as it's poke away once
again by troutline. No, pardonme, that was a Hayes Rather and
the Old Abes will clear the zone. Pass was too strong though for Savalloy,
and now it's intercepted by Madsen forthe for the Old Abbes, Rather
(01:21:00):
sent ahead toward Coonert, and Coonertwill hold it up on the far boards,
looks for a centering past Nobody homeand out of the zone. It
goes skating forward. Here is Perkins, Perkins taken on two Old Abes himself.
Perkins spins loses an edge on thefar boards. Chance to outlet it
the other way for the Old Ages. With four to thirty five left here
in the second period, up thenearboards Mattson. Mattson flings it back behind
(01:21:21):
the cage. Madson trying to findthe buck kennot there's a stick on the
ice as well. I believe it'sa husky stick. Bill now onto it
here for the Old Abe and thisis cleared by the Huskies, but it
will be icing and then we'll geta stoppage. Four point fifteen remaining in
the second period, clock runs, and well, Dan, this is gonna
be a close one here tonight,I don't think, but it is certainly
(01:21:43):
a one that the Old Abe's gonnatry to some momentum into because they got
a game here at Hobbs on Thursdaynight against Menominee. That's gonna be an
interesting one. Menominee is kind ofa little bit of an upstart. They've
got some talent on that team.Their front line's pretty solid, and they
could give him Memorial some trouble andthey're trying to get in good form here
before that one. Yeah, andI mean just looking down the stretch,
(01:22:05):
I mean they have to take onChip with Falls a couple of games after
that, then New Richmond right afterthem, then River Falls. So they've
got a lot of really tough matchupscoming up here that this is gonna hopefully
push them into with that momentum. As there's a big pile up there.
Yeah, the far boards, guysflying all over the place, Colin Bill
(01:22:26):
going flying, four Oaklaire memorials, some good hits being put on the student
sections. By the way, Well, there's some Norse students who cleared out
they've only got about two or threerows left to students over there, memorial
student sections still standing. Good savehere by dust rebound attempt out in front
is set aside as there was achance for Troutlyne couldn't do it, and
(01:22:47):
now into the near corner here theold Ades skate out of there an opportunity
backhead shot and a goal goal forthe Old Aides. That's Ethan Beglinger,
who had just checked in. Ihaven't seen much of him Beglinger or the
goal. That is his first goalof the season. So that's a nice
little moment for him. You cansay that puck and you can hear the
Old Abes fans enjoying what they're singingfrom him as he scores with two fifty
(01:23:12):
six remaining in the second period andstill going on with that. Doesn't matter
which player is gonna be out therefor this old day of offense, they're
still gonna find someone to get anotherscore in there. And now you're seeing
some of their younger UH players andyou're also seeing some of their depths to
this is a very deep team thatthey have out here, and especially the
way that their system works, everyone'sgonna get a chance out there. It's
(01:23:34):
just about whether or not you're gonnatake that chance. As a player,
Yes, can be a little bitdemoralizing for Ryan Parker's crew. So let's
hope the Huskies again can bounce backa bit down nine to nothing now number
two, and so Tarutline gets theassist of Actually that's his first point of
(01:24:00):
the game as well, Begglinger gettinghis first goal and Charline getting his first
assist of his twenty twenty three twentytwenty four campaign. A nine nothing lead
here for the Old Age, thatgoal coming at the fourteen oh four mark
of the second I've seen a totalnow of four goals scored by the Old
(01:24:20):
Abes in this second period. Anine nothing lead for him. There's a
centering pass for North that was justintercepted. Old Abes skated ahead with Pancrats.
Pancrats gains his own, comes itfar side over to Diggins. Diggins
centering pass shot. What to sayby dust Dusk gets a piece of that
one on the shot came in therefrom Schomberger and that one goes high and
(01:24:41):
wide. I sing call coming uptwo minutes and ticking left here in the
second period. Nine nothing Old Abesit's a heck of a save. Oh
it was. And I know alot of people want to go out there
and say, oh, it's onthe goal lead for giving up nine goals.
It's not. It's a team effortout there. And that means if
there's nine goals giving up, it'snot just the goalie. It means there's
a whole miscommunication going on right nowon the team. And then a quick
(01:25:05):
shot out of the face off herefor the Old Abbes almost got goal number
ten. Instead, it's turned asideby the Huskies. Still not out of
the zone, however, as theOld Abes hold it here at the near
point, good job, I burnedit. Dump at back Yid chasing after
his Carne's up along the far boards. Old Abbes will track this one down,
turning on a dime. There ishaze on the far side in his
(01:25:29):
own end, and now the Huskiesintercepted neutral light this one's shot in toward
Hagen Boy. They have not calledhis name much tonight the tender for the
Old Abes, and there's a bighit behind the play from Onoman jumping Will
Carlson now a chance here for amemorial, trying to spin looking for the
(01:25:49):
shot is burned. Now the greatpass to the weak side, nearer side
to on him and he whips onthe shot, still hold his zone though
forty seven seconds left in the period, dumping it back in and looking for
another chance. Nine nothing Old Abeswith the lead. Now it's not up
the nearboards cleared out of there bythe Huskies. There's an arm in the
air for an icing, and wewill get the icing with thirty four seconds
(01:26:11):
remaining in the second. Again, the clock is running, running clock with
a nine nothing Old Abe's lead,so you might not even see another face
off here we'll see exactly how muchsigns left when they take it, and
statistically a goal might not do muchhere, but for morale's sake, it
would definitely be a booster for theHuskies. Here again, you're listening to
high school hockey and the Mike SullivanKnight. We're gonna call it here at
(01:26:35):
Hobb's Ice Arena. Here on WBI z Amo Claire translator W two five
four Cno Claire. That is theend the period, number two. It's
the Old Abes nine the Huskies zero, and it is now on the intermission,
which has brought to you once againby Domino's still got time give them
(01:26:55):
a call as again, it's agreat time to stretch in order to repeat
from Dominoes. They'll deliver straight toyour door so you'll be ready for the
third period. Dan again, thishas been a dominant performance from Memorial.
Not a whole lot else to talkabout here. It's been all Memorial and
now you're gonna see maybe what someof the youth as for both these teams
(01:27:15):
here going into the third. Yeah, and that's important, especially for a
team like North who they've struggled alittle bit this year, but they've had
some good wins here and there.I mean, we've talked about the three
oh start they had to the seasonand now it's been a one to eight
slide since then. But you reallyhope you can finish off this season strong
and a lot of that will beseeing what the future has in stores for
this team, certainly will. Wewill take a break here as part of
(01:27:38):
our Dominoes Intermission report. The secondpart of our interview with the Guests of
Honor, Mike Sulliwan is coming upas he gets a chance to talk about
that great run that the Blue Goldswent on in twenty thirteen and all the
memories he had broadcasting games here atHobbs Ice Arena. That's all coming up
as part of our second intermission reportbrought to you by Dominoes. Right after
this, it's nine to nothing OldAves with the Lee and you're listening to
(01:28:00):
it right here on ninety eighty sevenThe Family dot Com. Here's part two
of our Domino's Intermission interview with theguests of Hunter tonight in Mike Sullivan.
Mike obviously getting the placard up thereand having the press box named after You've
been mentioning some of the memories thatyou have here of the games that you've
seen, but not only high schoolgames you've been a part of. You
(01:28:21):
got to be a part of broadcastingthe twenty thirteen National Championship for u W
Claire right in them heading to LakePlaid and whatnot. There's been a lot
of really great moments or there anyothers, I mean, you mentioned a
few of the early days, anyother ones that stand out in your head
in terms of, you know, big overtime goals or a big sectional final
win or something like that that comesto mind. There are some big wins
(01:28:45):
and I you know, if Istarted listing, I mean the Memorial win.
Well, first of all, theBlue Golds win in twenty thirteen and
her Brooks Arena was fantastic and theywere the underdogs, they weren't supposed to
do anything. Herb Brooks Arena isexactly the same as it was for the
Miracle on ice the game in nineteeneighty and that was a tremendous moment.
(01:29:12):
Then the eighty four NAI National Championshipwas very cool too, and you know
there wasn't a press box to do. And I mean Scott Parker and Steve
b. Lodging and all those Bluegoals are very special in my memory.
Then the you know the overtime gamesMemorial in North North. Zach Stang scored
(01:29:32):
with ten seconds left in overtime towin for North. Bill Sleep scored on
the opening face off of overtime, you know, a bouncing puck that fluttered
past the North goalie to win forMemorial eight to seven in the very I
don't know one of the early MemorialNorth games. I could go on and
(01:29:55):
on. I mean, there's beenlots of big goals and lots of big
games. And what I remember mostabout Memorial North rivalry is after the game
the kids shake hands. I mean, it's it's they both played against each
other and with each other for years, and they're wonderful afterwards. And you
(01:30:16):
know, Mark Frehley and Tom kokLitsey Memorial and North coaches were best friends.
They really were best friends, andthey shook hands afterwards, and uh,
you know, it's corny, butthat that was what I remember as
you look at you know this.I mentioned the state of hockey a little
bit earlier in Oaklare and that it'svery good obviously with everybody playing as they
(01:30:40):
do and so on. But youknow, one of the things that I
don't think people realize is just youknow, how much coverage can bring to
it, whether that's you know, the Leader Telegram, whether that's radio coverage,
whether that's video streams and everything.I think you kind of saw that,
and I want you maybe to talka little bit of what coverage right,
what media coverage does to kind ofdeveloped right, to have you know,
kids maybe get more excited about gettinginto hockey when they're younger and so
(01:31:02):
on, because that's one thing Ithink people maybe underestimate a little bit.
Road games. I mean, theroad games were so important from Ashland to
Roso to Green Bay to you know, the road games, and when I'd
get set up and get on theair and people would follow. And I
remember the first time in Madison whenI did a state tournament game and somebody
(01:31:25):
was listening on their phone and youknow, said hi Mike, and like,
you know, now it's common, but I mean at that time it
wasn't that. I remember thinking,Wow, this is really something. Yeah,
it's it's special. And people don'tunderstand the depth of the media coverage
in this town. How good itis that Pete knuts And is still doing
(01:31:48):
express games. And I mean, you know, I could go on and
on Woody Wall and Lucas Earra andyou know all the people that have come
before me that made it a greatplace to work. I know, I
can remember one time, I feellike you went. I remember that Roso
trip where you told me I thinkit was the last game of the trip
(01:32:09):
where there was North Memorial up therewhere they didn't turn the heat on and
it was what twenty below or somethingwhen you walked into the ring inside.
Yeah, yeah, it was fiftybelow outside, it was twenty fifteen below
inside. And I can still feelthat. I mean, I'm not susceptible
to cold. I think I wasconceived in Alaska by my dad, who
was you know, in Alaska forWorld War Two. And I don't bother
(01:32:34):
cold doesn't bother me, but thatwas cold, Mike. As you you
know again, have the press boxnamed after you here tonight and have everybody
kind of be part of this.I gotta imagine that, you know,
you're kind of looking forward to seeinga lot of old friends, a lot
of a lot of folks like that. What's the biggest kind of thing you're
looking forward to as we record thisa little bit, you know, before
all the all the pomp and circumstancearound, you know, officially unveiling that
(01:32:59):
banner and dedicate eating the press back. Honestly looking forward to getting out of
here and you know, spending timewith Chris and Katie and my wife and
daughter. You know, I yes, I'm looking forward to seeing kids.
And it's funny, while I was, you know, in the hospital recently
at MAO, I heard from Missus. She was Missus Ekterknock at the time.
(01:33:20):
I knew her Jack and Ryan's momwho played at North and Beth staying
Sam and Zach and Garrett's mom isthe head of PT at Mayo. You
know, it's funny how many differentwalks of life you can find people that
(01:33:40):
you know are touched by the hockeyprogram. That certainly is great to see
all those folks, and I'm surethey're all very excited for you to have
that honor as well. Mike. It's great catching up with you, and
thank you so much for being partof a real special night here at Odds.
I want to thank Pete Knutson, and I want to say this in
public. I am so so gladthat you succeeded me. I wish and
(01:34:01):
I wish BIZ still cared and iHeartstill cared about local sports. They don't.
And that's if it sounds harsh,it's true. I know you do,
and that's great. That was parttwo of our intermission interview brought to
you behind Dominoes with Mike Sullivan ourguest of honored. Tonight, we will
have the third period between North Memorialcoming up right after this, Devin the
(01:34:25):
Fan, and welcome back in onceagain here to Hobbs Ice Arena and the
newly dedicated Mike Sullivan press Box,and it is hockey Night at Hobbs here
tonight and the first Hockey nighted Hobbsof twenty twenty four. You think back
to it and again a nine tonothing lead here for the old Abes against
the Huskies in the inter city clashand the Crosstown showdown. But you think
(01:34:47):
back on it. You heard fromMike Sullivan part of our Domino's Intermission Report
interview, part two of that, talking about the history here, talking about
all the good Blue Gold seams who'vebeen through here as well. But you
go back back to the you know, the seventies when this first started,
you know, for us to stillbe going on in twenty twenty four and
you know the history and tradition here. Dan, I know you're a guy
(01:35:08):
who grew up in full Fax,not too far away. But I mean
when you think of Claire, youknow, they've been good football teams,
They've been good basketball teams over theyears, some great players that have come
through you know Oaklaire North at OaklareMemorial and Oaklare Regis for that matter.
But I think a lot of peoplewhen they think about high school sports in
Oa Claire, the first thing theythink about is hockey, right, I
mean, the hockey has been what'sbeen dominant, whether it's been the old
(01:35:30):
Aves, the Huskies have had theiryears, they've gotten there, now the
ECA Stars on the girls side, who do a great job and have gotten
to the state tournament number of times. I think when a lot of people
around the state think Oaklaire and theythink high school sports, the first thing
they think about is hockey. Theythink about this sheet ice right here.
I feel like that part of thatmight just because of you know, Wisconsin,
but at the same time, andwe're kind of bordering on Minnesota about
(01:35:53):
the same time. Though, thishas been a very historical HOBS arena has
just been very historic, and alsoteams that have come through have been very
historical, especially Memorial and especially theHuskies. They have both have had very
good matchups over these last few years. And especially even I always bring up
Regions, we just always seem tohave some kind of dominant team no matter
what sport that they have there aswell. But the memories that I've had,
(01:36:16):
like coming into this arena and beingable to see some of the great
games that I've come by in mychildhood, It's been really special and I'm
very glad to be able to continuethat well being here and actually talk about
the game too. Well, it'ssomething I think that goes underestimated here as
well. And you know, I'llput in a plug for the other things
(01:36:38):
going on outside of just Ackey here. But you know, I mean,
we are very spoiled for a tonof what you know, sixty five to
eighty thousand people wherever we're at inthere and the surrounding areas. To have
not only this Hobbs Ice Arena, but to have what's gonna happen with the
Son and Tag Center. Obviously that'sgoing to be great, right for local
basketball and obviously for football and allthe things are gonna happen there. But
to have Carson Park, you know, a baseball city, and that this
(01:37:00):
historic as that is that you knowthat Hank Aaron played at, and Bob
Youker, Bob Bucker played at,and Joe Tory played at and now you
know some greats and Cole Calhoun andJordan Zimmerman and others. Adulton Barshaw.
I mean, like we are forthis sized town. We are ridiculously spoiled
in the sports team for just howgood you know the high school is here
(01:37:20):
for hockey and how historic baseball andfootball and all the other things are around
this area. Oh yeah, andthat's that's for sure. I Mean it
feels like no matter where you go, at least one team, one team
on all of these schools will bevery good, no matter what the sport
is, no matter what, there'sgonna be one team that's gonna be very
good because there's just so talented outhere. I mean, it's just the
(01:37:43):
culture that it's just that sports culturethat always brings people out to those games.
And I mean it's not just theplayers you're watching on like the ice
or the court or anything like that. It's just the atmosphere that the people
around bring. Yeah, I've beenexcited with There's a D three rider,
Riley Zaias, who is a Dthree and that kind of thing. He's
making a trip out to Menominee totalk about the War on ninety four rivalry
(01:38:04):
right basketball specifically and what bat's meantover there. You think about the old
years of doing men'sit stout as wellas Ken Anderson at Oak Blair in the
NAI days. I mean, thisis and the thing that links all this
back together. As we talked aboutthis before the third period of this game
is that Mike Sullivan has been therefor a lot of it, right,
I mean, the fact that yougot a kind of that living history almost
(01:38:27):
with him is just I mean, you just want him to talk, just
keep talking about what you've seen, because he's seen so many things. The
stories that he tells. He was, I mean, he was telling his
story when I went over to meethim, and he is he's mid story,
right, Yeah. Absolutely, it'sgreat. Just a great guy.
And what a great night to beremembering him by certainly is. And he
was here and gave a great speechbefore the face off and all that good
(01:38:53):
stuff as well, and a greatnight for hockey year at hobbsk Ind.
Here's a shot in for oak ClairNorth as we are under here in the
third period from the left point. As they moved up to right here in
the third the Old Apes go rightto left. The Old AB's up nine
to nothing here on Oaklare North, and we will have a running clock this
entire period unless something crazy happens.Old Abes will and I'm sure the Huskies
(01:39:15):
too will bring in a number oftheir freshmen and sophomores to get them an
opportunity. Is the old Ags withit here and trout Lines sending it forward.
Here skating it in near side isWanky Wanky with the shot to send
in and Dust will deflect that oneup into the netting and we'll get a
face off in the north end toour left. The body language from the
North Huskies just feeling like they wantto be out of this game. But
(01:39:41):
they started very quickly after that initialstarts with the period, you know that
they want to get a goal here, at least for the morale's sake.
Old Abes are knocking on the doorstepagain. Here is skating it in as
Diggings Higgins back behind the net toTarnets Higgins with it at the point,
centering passover right side for Autumn onthe week's side is deflected away and North
(01:40:02):
has an opportunity moving the other way. They'll dump it in, but lose
it relatively quickly. There will Jadonandrews now skating in is Jackson. Anderson
had tried to thigh up the puck, but the old Aides are able to
clear near side. Here with Diggins, Diggins sweeps it ahead and toward Carnates.
Carnates pass right side shot gonna gowide of dust. Not buy much,
however from Diggins there are no pardonme that was from autumn. Rather
(01:40:27):
a chance to make it ten nothinggoes awry, Yeah, the Huskies will
skate it forward here. Now tryto get their own attacks. Went pick
up on the far boards, hasit poked away by Haze And now a
chance for the old age if theylose it on the fore check and that
neutral ice and now get a stickto it to dump it into the north
end to our left. What anear side interception here out at neutral ice.
(01:40:50):
Sloop Schemburger, Schmburger dumps it inhere for the old Aides, they
stay on side. The puck isfluttering about in the low slop, but
it's eventually grabbed out of there bythe husky. He's he'll skate it ahead
on the far side with Eddie eastWall, one of the freshmen who's into
the game here for the Huskies, they lose the puck relatively quickly, though,
and hayes back on to it.Here for the old Age, day's
(01:41:11):
with Onoman. He's back in thefar corner sting shots that areround near side
here up the near boards, theyclear it, but it's pinned in by
Mosler here for the Huskies, Moserhas been held pretty quiet here tonight came
in with twelve points and has nothad anything going in a nine to nothing
old age lead with fourteen sixteen leftto go now and then most of his
points have been as the whistles callshere, most of his points have come
(01:41:35):
off those assists, and this reallyhasn't been much flow in this offense for
North Icing is the call again.A special thanks to Rock and Take Good
Rich Trailer Sales to our intermission sponsoredDominos, to Hotel Law, the law
firm you want on your side forsponsoring all the penalties tonight, and for
our pregame sponsor Toysoon for kind ofa who's who of local businesses who are
(01:41:58):
all over the local sports scene.Special thanks to all of them for making
this special presentation. This one offbroadcast happened here tonight. Deflection in here
for Oaklaer Memorial is a chase afterthe end of our left up nine nothing.
They lose the puckover relatively quickly andWill Carlson is sophomore will send it
ahead but to no one in particular, and a nicing We'll be called here
(01:42:19):
and another face off at the endto our left, and it looked like
just another get it out of ourterritory kind of hit right there, but
just not a lot of intensity. They started off really hot to get into
this period, like they really wantedto get a goal, but they've cooled
(01:42:40):
off really since then. The Abeswill take the face off along with the
Huskies here in the north end. They are unable to get a shot off
though, as Bill was put offthe puck on his attempt, and now
it's risted in by Tommy Perkins andset aside by Hagen or anybody else could
get to it. They're looking fora rebound. Now the Husky's onto it.
Centering pass goes to no one outin front Anderson, so I'm making
(01:43:04):
that pass and just nobody home toget that shot off. Now the Old
Abes move the other way. Chancefor Benglinger. That's a goal earlier tonight,
his first in his career. Nowa shot comes off the side of
the cage as the Old Abes havean opportunity now to the right point.
No one deflected, just wide ofdust this idea there on the right side
by Kircher and now Dust the handleof his stick pins the puck up against
(01:43:28):
the net on the near side.Unfortunately it is set aside and now the
Husky's trying to clear the zone hereup on the near side. Eventually the
puck falls back off for Will Carlsonfor the Huskies and now send a head
out to neutralized. Good move herefor woly Gowollian has his shot deflected into
the far corner by an old abestick. That was Hayes who got to
it, and now up the nearside boards it comes skating in his diggings.
(01:43:50):
Diggins gains zone off on the farside, shot in and Dust it's
a body save on that as hesmothers it on the shot from Autumn on
the right pointing old aides. Elevenforty four left to go, third period,
the clock running and a great jobby Dust keep his body out in
front. And there's been a fewtimes where a lot of North fans have
(01:44:10):
been holding their breath because they've seena few of those go in. But
Dust, great job keeping in frontthere. We had a massive crowd here
to start this game. There wasnot many open seats here at Hobbs,
and now I'd say we're probably abouthalf full, maybe a little less than
that at this point, as anumber of fans have cleared out seen the
riding on the wall, all theAides are gonna ice a puck once again
(01:44:30):
eleven thirteen remaining, the clock tickingnine to nothing. Old Aides with the
lead here on the Huskies, Oh, I mean, it looks like some
of them are kind of just hoveringtowards the exit, kind of hovering around,
just kind of waiting for the gameto be able to congratulate some pieces.
If anybody's giving away free popcorn, true, yes, you guys done
what you guys done bobbing popcord? Are those given those away? Yet you're
(01:44:54):
not gonna sell them? Hovering aroundjust waiting for some free food. I
mean, that's one of the bestpart about parts about being a broadcaster,
dan is It a lot of timesif you hang around long enough and there's
somebody walking around back there, they'llgive you something on the way out.
My dinner could be right over there. You never know. Well, I
(01:45:16):
mean dinners it's a strong word probablyfor that. I'm well, I was
a college student. It's one isshot in an opportunity here for the Old
Apes on the rebound for pancrats, that'll go just wide. Dust do a
nice job here in this third period, has put off the puck right out
and the low slot was on himand he had a chance, but the
Huskies were there clearance will go upinto the netting. Part of me will
go out of play. Rather onthat far side we'll get a face off.
(01:45:40):
I think back in the Oak ClaireNorth end. Ten minutes left to
go. Yeah, we're talking aboutall the you know, the history here.
One of the sad parts of thisseason. You and I got to
be there for the first game ofthe last season of Zorn Arena that'll be
torn down after the end of thisseason to make way for the Sonatag Center.
But wall, you know Eddie Anders, the old men's basketball coach for
UW Stout. Whenever I'd interview himbefore a Stout Oaklare game, he would
(01:46:03):
say, if these walls could talk, the things that they have seen,
not only the Blue Golds games thathave been played there, there are a
number of regionals and sectionals for OaklareNorth and Oaklaer Memorial Oaklare regions played there
as well. That history is alsohelpable when you walk in his own arena.
Yeah, it's gonna be at It'sgonna be a big thing to be
missing, just for historical factors, but also it always had such a nice
(01:46:28):
atmosphere and always was filled with somegreat community members. Intimate, intimate,
I think he's really intimate. Yeah, but that's sign take Center is gonna
be very good for Oaklaire sports movingforward. I mean that's gonna be huge
for not only the university, butthese teams here that will then be able
to play sectionals and regionals there.Yeah, that's a great point. Is
the Husky's clear of the zone here? Where eight fifty five left to go
(01:46:49):
third Gary still a nine to nothinglead here for the old Abes. Taking
a kind of half hearted shot forthe Huskies was Cam Mosler And now I'm
clear back out of there by OaClaire Memorial and we'll get another icing call.
And I think Memorials contend to icethe puck because they know the clock's
gonna keep ticking, and then getout of here, hopefully with no injuries,
(01:47:11):
and get into their game against Menomineeright back here at Hobbs on Tuesday
night. The Huskies will travel toRiver Falls on a Thursday night to take
on the Wildcats, which should bea good game there on the western side
of the state. Now it chancesprobably the best of the game for the
Huskies, and a great staved thereby Hagen on the shot from the captain
(01:47:33):
and Logan Hesselman right off that faceoff. Now another opportunity here for the
Huskies. They win another face off. This is a block shot, however,
from the point from Mosler they'll holdthe zone though for the moment here
Will o'claire North Husky's trying to figureout an opportunity. They just can't get
a centering pass and it eventually it'spoked out of there sowing the way by
(01:47:55):
begling up. It comes here foran old Abes odd man Raja chance the
other way, and it goes offthe skate on the centering pass to Wankie
and now the Husky's back on toit. When dumped ahead, the Labes
will try to chase it down hereon the near boards. Winning a hockey
coming up here at Hobbs. TheBlue Golds getting into it as well.
(01:48:20):
Women's hockey team and good shape men'shockey team in good shape Balso's tell you
about this is a great center forhockey. There's no doubt about that.
Whether it's college hockey or high schoolhockey. This is a spot to be
a nine to nothing lead for theold age at seven to ten left to
play here in the third period.Great to hear some of the stories from
(01:48:40):
Mike Sullivan and Are Domino's intermission aswell, talking about those two national championships
from Ope Claire or UWO player ratherthan men's hockey, they've been knocking on
the doorstep in women's hockey recently aswell, getting the NCAA tournament. Haven't
been able to advance very far,but you wouldn't be surprised if in the
coming years they've got some chances aswell. See old Ames dump this one
(01:49:01):
in wave off icing as the Huskiesgo chasing. And it's just a great
hockey culture to be a part of. I mean, everyone's gonna thrive in
a place where everyone loves this sport, and especially you're gonna drive in more
players, especially in in uw euClaire's case, drive in more players that
want to come and play for yourteam. A great save there by Dust.
(01:49:24):
There's a great point blank opportunity passover to autumn from the near side.
I think that pass went in fromlost and and Autumn was just on
the back doorstep. Maybe he hesitatedtoo long with a great glove save there
by dust to keep it a nineto nothing game. Clock continues to run.
Those six minutes remain here in thethird period, the old apes up
nine nothing, taste off win here, We'll go back and just be smothered
(01:49:48):
by dust. Smart move. Idon't want to take any risks now.
Unfortunate for him because he's been Ithink pretty I mean, you can only
face so many shots, right,I mean, this is not a night
where he was gonna win by anymeans. Maybe he'd sure there's a few
of them that he'd loved to havesaved that he didn't. And this is
(01:50:09):
gonna be sent down on the netof Hagen on that clearance no iSER.
Yeah, and I mean he hehas had pretty decent stats for what's been
going on defensively for this old playerhard team, and now he got an
old ab who lost his helmet thereon a hit troutline took a pretty decent
hit there from the Huskies. Maybea little bit of chippiness here. Five
(01:50:32):
twenty one left here in the thirdpier. We're gonna get a penalty of
some kind. Yeah, there wasa bit of pushing and shoving down there,
and you saw a few words exchangedand then maybe a little shove at
the end. Elbow is gonna becalled here on Blake Onoman and so Onoman
called for elbowing at the see elevennine mark, probably thirty nine mark.
(01:51:00):
But yeah, Carter doest I meanone hundred and ninety six saves on the
season, they have this defense ofallowed four hundred and five total shots on
the goal as Memorial wins that faceoff there, and he's had an eighty
six percent save percentage. He's nota bad goalie, he just needs a
little bit more help. Huskies withan opportunity you want to save there by
(01:51:21):
Hagen, that puck was scorting throughhis through the five hole. Basically he
kind of had to fall backwards, put his glove back behind him and just
gets to the puff before it goesover the line. The Huskies with another
great opportunity now on the power playclock will continue to tick though, and
that certainly hurts their power play chanceson their second power play of the game.
(01:51:44):
Again, that's brought to you byHertel Lov Law Firm. That you
want on your side turn around shot. Hagen didn't know much about that.
I think he got a piece ofit though, maybe off of his blocker
into the far corner. Huskies, once again with an opportunity. Moser behind
the net, skates it around, skating looking looking out to the blue line
all the way to the slot, around to the point farboards. Moser.
Moser, looking for the centering pass, goes off a skate chance for a
(01:52:05):
short handed opportunity the other way.He couldn't quite get to a good wankie
on that play, but he'll tryto tie it up now on neutral ice
with the old age and they'll justdump it back in with fifty seconds remaining
on the power play in four toten left to go here in the third
period, Oh great pass here tooutlet the attack for Perkins and the Huskies,
but Perkins unable to handle it onthe high slot. Now sent to
(01:52:28):
the near boards. They'll set upthe power play here while the Huskies out
to the point it comes this isAnderson sends it to the space that he
vacates. Now they send it acrosschance fer Moser. Moser's shot goes wide
and back into the near corner Herefor the Huskies, a'll hold onto possession.
Twenty four seconds remain in the powerplay shot and what save it again
by Hagen who keeps the clean sheetfor the moment here for Oa Claire Memorial.
(01:52:54):
Now another chance here for the Huskiesis they hold a puck coming in
Otoman was there? That one getsaway apart me around Hagen was there?
This one gets out of the zoneand now a chance for Memorials skate it
out Tarnet's on the far side,a chance to make a ten on it
goes wide on a shot from Schenberger. The penalty is over. We're back
to even strength because Memorial needs toget a change here. Oh yeah,
(01:53:15):
definitely. You can see him huffingand puffing on the ice right now.
Here's a man who's been out therefor a while, and wow, this
shot was off his stick. Andnow the Huskies will go get a boy
some great chances to get at leaston the score sheet here for Oaklare North.
And I'll tell you what. Breckenhagenhasn't been asked to do much,
but what he just did there herein the third period is why I think
they feel pretty good about his goaltendingprowess, and I mean he's only had
(01:53:40):
one shout out on the year, and he wants that second one really badly.
You can tell just by the wayhe's been making all kinds of saves
tonight, outstretched arms and reaching foranything, just making sure not to let
anything up. Shot is sticked awayonce again by dust on that one for
memorial around back behind the net mantrying to get to it here for the
(01:54:02):
Old Ages is wanky wanky, thenis dump behind the plane. We're gonna
get a penalty here on the Huskies, I believe, with two twenty remaining
clock will stop. A cross checkhas been called, and so the Old
Ades are going to go on thepower play for pretty much the remainder of
this game. Let's we're able toscore. Penalty will go against Carson Kohler.
(01:54:29):
Second penalty called on North for across check, and that will come
at the fourteen forty mark here ofthis third period. So the Old Ages
will have a power play to endit here in all likelihood, and an
(01:54:51):
opportunity is skating in looking for theshot and taking a big shot up high.
There was Onoman shot right there inthe middle from Wooli almost another elbowing
penalty. Boy. It was ahead shot opportunity or chance there for them
to call that good pass over nearside of Schamburger, but he couldn't handle
it. Husky's gonna skate out,try to get a short handed opportunity the
other way. Woolly's skating in.It's taken away, however by the by
(01:55:15):
the old aides relatively easily. Schamburglarnow up. They come on the far
side to Onoman Onoman getting tied upover there along with Will Carlson. Now
a chance for the old Abe.So it was skating out of a corner
with it was Onoman. North willclear it with one thirty five remaining here
in the third period and nine nothingold age lead just kind of trying to
(01:55:36):
keep it moving right here. Nowa lot of the old aides just kind
of skating along, not really takingnot really taking many shots here, just
kind of trying to get this timegoing. Savaloya trying to pin it down
on the far boards. He can'tand set up the power play so Oaklaire
North will skate it in with JacksonAnderson. He tries to hold up the
(01:55:57):
puck on the far corner in theacting zone again down a man here are
Oaklare North in in one minute remainingin the ball or in the game.
Rather, I made it almost theentire game without saying ball lads. They're
in a hockey match, and nowa chance with the Old Abbes that one's
gonna go. Just why Buck isbouncing out in front after deflecting off the
boards, but no rebound chance therefor a memorial as the Huskies want to
(01:56:21):
hold onto it here at twenty secondsremaining on the power plate, forty in
the game. As far as theOld Abes looking for the interception, there
is Mosler goes off of skate, now off of stick and now to be
Savalloya trying to center her pass itfar side here for wanky ranky, now
onto it. Opportunity is dust deflex it up into the net. Twenty
(01:56:44):
sect ins left. That might beit. I don't know if we're gonna
get another face off here. Yeah, it looks like they're all skating nonchalantanus
that everybody is at so that islikely going to do it and the Old
Abes are going to skate away witha nine to nothing win here tonight against
Oak Claire North three with two withone and the face off buck will be
(01:57:04):
dropped right as the horn blows ona memorable night for Mike Sullivan and the
dedication of the press box. That'sthe Old Abes who come away with their
seventy sixth win in this rivalry series, now seventy six, forty seven and
two in their time here against OaClaire North. We'll take a one minute
(01:57:24):
breakdown price one minute. We'll wrapit up here from Hobbs Ice Arena right
after this on ninety eight seven, the Fan, home for the most sports
play by play in the Chippewa Valley. Ninety eight seven the Fan and back
here at Hobbs Ice Arena our postgameshow as the Old Abes of Oaklare Memorial
win nine and nothing over Oa ClaireNorth. Here tonight in hockey action,
(01:57:45):
Pekadots and dan Zon's with you. We'll talk about what this night means in
a moment, but just your thoughtsreal quickly on the game. As you
see a couple guys with multiple goalstonight for Oaklaire Memorial. Mattson had two,
Ontoman had it two as well.Anchrid scores, Carnate scores. Let's
see burn Savaloya, Beglinger, abunch of guys get on the score sheet
for Memorial tonight, and I thinkthey wanted to get right here as they
(01:58:09):
get into some tougher matchups that theyhave coming up. Obviously, North,
you know, not the night thatthey want, and this is going to
be a tough season with them beingas young as they are, but Memorial
really showing that they can potentially competewith those teams that are at the top
of the big rivers. Yeah, and this one definitely helps. I mean,
we talked about it. They dropthose two losses into the conference,
and especially with how important that is, they needed an extra one here to
(01:58:32):
really get them going on the righttrajectory. And for Eau Claire North,
this was just something you needed toreally potentially save the season. But falling
down to now one and four inconference, it's not looking likely unless they
can get a late end of theseason serge here. Just need some more
talent and yes, a few moreguys right to kind of jump up,
(01:58:53):
and you know, maybe not thisseason, but they've got a lot of
youth and a lot of real goodopportunity. We know Ryan Parker and that
Claire North Staff can develop a lotof guys as well. They've developed great
players over the years. You canyou can definitely see there's some guys out
there right if they get a littlebit of support that they can probably show
off when they become juniors and seniors. They're very young. They this is
(01:59:13):
what young teams too. And ifyou look at just the size differential out
there on the court, I mean, it was obvious that the old ages
are gonna come out on top ofthis one. But Oa Claire North has
a bright future ahead of them.I mean, they have four total wins
on the season, and for sucha young team that's mainly freshman and sophomores,
I mean that's pretty good. Certainlyis a nine to nothing win four
Memorial again, they take home anominee here at Hobbs on Thursday night.
(01:59:34):
North will travel two River Falls onThursday. Memorial. Now is eight and
two overall, three and two inconference. North drops to four and nine
overall, one in four in conferenceas well. We dedicate to Mike Sullivan
press box tonight. Mike had agreat speech before the game. We got
to hear from him during our Domino'sintermission. Reports final thoughts on that.
It's been a fun night, agood historic night. I know it ends
(01:59:56):
up being kind of a whole homenight at the end as everybody was kind
of on their but to see allthe dignitaries to see, especially I think
for both of us, who areboth media guys. Right, you're a
media I'm a media guy. Tosee all the media folks who over the
years have been big parts of OAClaire get out here and support Mike can
just kind of all be in thesame place at one time was a pretty
cool thing to see. Like yousaid, it was a reunion. It
(02:00:16):
was like a nice, happy reunionto see everyone back out here again,
especially to celebrate such a poignant personin this great media landscape that is OH
Claire. It certainly was, anda special congratulations to Mike. His name
now up here on the press boxfor the long time foreseeable future here at
OH Claire, and everybody will seehis name right as they come in,
(02:00:40):
whether it's a whether it's a peewee game, whether it's a Blue Golds
game, or whether it's a bighigh school game, they'll see his name
up here on the press box.And that's pretty cool, all right.
Well, hey, we want togive a special thanks. So this is
a one off game, so youknow, nothing coming up at least in
terms of local games, but forus to be able to make this happen,
a special thanks to Dave Deville andall the folks at to iHeart who
were able to get this game produced, to all of our salespeople to get
(02:01:01):
it on the air as well, and to those who sponsored it tonight,
including Toys and Ford, a greatsponsor a local sports as well as Domino's
Pizza, our intermission sponsor, andof course Harry Hertel who's a big instrumental
of dedicating this press box to MikeSullivan, but also for sponsoring our game
tonight as well, with Hotel Lawand Rock and Tate and Goodrich Trailer Sales
(02:01:26):
as well. Couldn't do it withoutany of our great sponsors, and we
appreciate their support. Dan always fun. I'm sure we keep meeting up like
this, So we'll figure out anothergame to do somewhere on some channel,
on some stream whatever. Right,it'll happen at some point. It's inevitable.
Now, it's inevita. I thinkyou're right. I think we're bound
to do at least a few moreso. Oh again, special thanks to
our incomparable producer back in studio,Dan Price, and again a big congrats
(02:01:50):
to Mike Sullivan for Dan Zon's I'mpeak canuts in your final score Here from
Hobbs Ice Arena, It's the OaklaerMemorial Old Abes nine the oaklare North Huskies
zero. Chris Connert I'm round andthird and coming for home.
