(00:27):
seven opening round series. Your Clippersfall one thirteen to one zero three at
Staples Center to the Dallas Mavericks andLuca don Chich. Welcome into Clippers Talk.
I'm at a maslin to eight sevenseventy five two zero eleven fifty eight
seven seven five two zero eleven fiftyis the phone number coming up here on
the show. We will have postgameaudio for you from head coach to Lou

(00:52):
and the players after they lose byten. We will also have LA Clippers
film on from Twitter. You knowhim, You'll love him. It is
Justin Wilson. He will be hereon the show to break down what happened.
But let me start things off bysaying this, the Clippers really struggled,
obviously from distance in this game.Yet with three minutes left while they

(01:15):
weren't hitting threes. It was tiedat one hundred with three minutes and twelve
seconds left after Paul George hit atwenty foot jumper, but the Clippers would
only score three more points in thefinal three minutes of the ball game,
and Dallas would go on a runlate to extend things to a ten point
victory. They also got to thefree throw line, of course, and

(01:38):
that's where the Clippers ended up strugglingin the fourth after they started thirteen of
thirteen in the first half from thecharity stripe, and that was really keeping
them in the ball game. Becausethe three point shot that has been so
good all season long, where theyshot forty one point one percent from the
outside, best three point one shootingteam in the league, fourth best all

(02:01):
time at forty one point one percent, but they go just eleven of forty
from distance, that's twenty seven percent. Dallas ends up shooting twenty percent better
from three. They go seventeen ofthirty six that's forty seven point two percent.
Dallas beat them at their own game, and the Clippers weren't much better

(02:22):
after starting off four of eighteen inthe first half. That's twenty two percent.
They go seven of twenty two inthe second half from three, that's
just thirty one percent, and Dallasjust out executed them. It wasn't just
ridiculous thirty foot Luca Dons three pointers. They were getting a wide open looks.
Clippers were not rotating well enough.Dallas had them on their heels.

(02:44):
They were off balanced defensively. Clipperswere down by twelve early in this game
in the first quarter. They cutit to within three heading into the second,
but they were down five at thehalf, They were down six going
into the fourth quarter, and thenwhen those threes finally started drop, they
hit four of them early on inthe fourth, two from Paul George,
who played really well in the secondhalf. Nicholas Batoum hit one, Jen

(03:07):
Rondo hit one. He actually wouldgo three of four from distance, hit
three of The Clippers only eleven threepointers made in this game, but they
went cold after that. They couldn'tkeep it going and they ended up getting
outscored by four in the fourth quarter. But it was really that stretch at
the end of the game where Dallasended up outscoring them thirteen to three in

(03:31):
the last three minutes. And we'vetalked about this early on the season,
it was the Clippers don't have thatorchestrator, that ball handler out there.
They go out and get re GenRondo. The offense has looked much better
and their defense well at the endin fourth quarters, in clutch time.
I know they have struggled on thatend overall, but in the second half

(03:53):
of the season they seemed to makethat adjustment. But tonight when they were
getting beat over and over again defensivelyby a Dallas team that offensively was out
executing them, making the extra pass, finding the open man, finding Chris
Stapp Porzingis down the stretch after hereally struggled. I think he had six
of his fourteen points in the fourthquarter, and Noah Eagle brought it up.

(04:15):
But sometimes when they're not defending wellor they're not shooting well, one
end of the floor affects the other. And I thought that happens tonight here
at Staples Center to the Clippers inthe final three minutes when they weren't hitting
shots, they couldn't get set defensively, and Dallas was putting on a passing
clinic at times, because believe itor not, Luca don Chich only had

(04:40):
one of his thirty one points inthe fourth quarter. Luca is not the
guy that beat them down the stretch. It was the others. I mentioned
Chris stap Porzingis who woke up andgot a few easy looks of the basket.
But Jalen Brunson had multiple and oneopportunities in the fourth quarter. He
finished with fifteen points. And Imean Tim Hardaway Junior. We knew it

(05:01):
was going to be an X factor. Head coach Tlu talked about it coming
into this series. They knew it. They couldn't stop him. He went
five of nine from three hit hisopen looks. It just felt like every
time the Clippers were starting to getclose, and even had the game tied
with three minutes left, Dallas wouldmake a run and keep him at arm's

(05:23):
length again. Then all of asudden, Dallas would get confidence after the
Clippers made a run and they'd comeright back after them. And that's what
you have to be concerned about, because this Dallas Mavericks team, I'm sure
from their perspective, they're thinking weshould have won that first round series last
year. But Chris STAPs Porzingis endsup missing the last three games, really

(05:44):
only played in two and a halfgames because he was suspended after the first
half in Game one against the Clippers, and overall he shot over fifty percent
from the field, and that sixgame series last year shot over fifty percent
from three two, played really welland even though he struggled tonight four thirteen,
fourteen points, it's the timing ofsome of those points when they needed
them. So the Clippers are gettingthis Dallas team with Dwight Powell back,

(06:08):
with Willie cauley Stein, with JalenBrunson. They're fully loaded this time around.
Guys who weren't there in the bubbleare believing that, hey, if
we were, it would have beena different outcome. I'm guessing that's their
mindset right now, and their confidenceis at an all time high. And
when you have someone like Luca Donchachwho had twelve points in the first quarter

(06:28):
alone, granted Kawhi Leonard combated thatwith thirteen of his it gives you confidence.
It gives confidence throughout the locker roombecause when a guy is making shots
of that high degree of difficulty fromthirty feet out and a couple of his
three pointers were just indefensible. Therewas nothing you could do against them.
It just gets everybody out there feelinggood and feeling like we can't lose because

(06:50):
we have Luca donchach here and theClippers. They did a really good job
in one area we were concerned aboutdown the stretch, where in the last
ten games they were turning the ballover about fifteen times per game. Tonight
they had just five turnovers. Dallashad thirteen. Clippers turned that into seventeen
points. But the three point shootinghas been the Clippers identity. This is

(07:13):
what they do. They need thatshot. They need those shots to fall
because it works hand in hand whenyou're getting easy looks of the basket.
The three point line normally opens upbecause teams are loading up in the paint.
But on the other side, whenyou're missing those shots, teams can
also load up in the paint andyou're not getting easier looks down low.
Even though in the first half theClippers were very good in the paint,

(07:38):
I thought it was a lot ofVizza Zoobots who did all his scoring in
the first half, played nineteen minutes, had eight points. They went small
down the stretch and Dallas attacked themat times not I thought Sergebaca. We
talked about this post game as well. He looked good. He played heavy
fourth quarter minutes. He had eightpoints. More importantly, a couple of
blocks, one on Luca don chichI believe one on Chris Staff's porzingis as

(08:01):
well, where he recovered really nicely. Defensively, He's moving very well out
there. I remember this is stilljust his third game back in the last
two and a half months. RajonRondo played well. We expected that Playoff
Rondo hit his first shot, itwas from the outside, it was a
three pointer. And then also KawhiLeonard. He had seventeen points in the

(08:22):
first half. He looks like playoffKawhi. He got off to a quick
start. He had nine more pointsafter that. And I think one of
the major takeaways if you're looking forpositition, and you have to be this
is a seven game series. ThisDallas team is that good. They could
take you to six or seven games, and they can beat you if you're
not careful, if you're not onyour game, and we saw that tonight.

(08:45):
But Paul George and we saw afew of these games towards the end
of the regular season. Overall,I mentioned the turnovers and how they struggled
there to end the season. ButPaul George, shooting wise his last ten
games was just at about forty percentfrom the field thirty sent from three.
But he had a couple of gameswhere he would turn things around in the
second half after getting off to arough start, and after starting off one

(09:09):
for seven with seven points in thefirst half, he gets sixteen points in
the second half where he ends upgoing seven for eleven from the field in
the second half of this game, and was big in the fourth quarter where
I believe he had ten points inthe fourth. But the Clippers got cold

(09:31):
late Dallas simply out executed them.I thought they had a brilliant game plan.
I thought they looked more in sync, more in rhythm out there,
obviously from distance. But the Clippershave to turn things around quickly now here
in game two coming up Tuesday nightback here at Staples Center, tip times
at seven thirty. They have tofind a way to win that ball game.

(09:54):
And I think they will respond becauseyou can't shoot much worse from distance,
and you just hope that you canprogress to the mean eventually, that
you can get some of those shotsto fall early on, and also not
let Dallas get loose early, notlet them put up a thirty three spot
in the first quarter, because theproblem is once you give a team life
like that, once Luca don chichis getting it going like that, and

(10:16):
let's see who else here. TimHardaway Junior I mentioned already with five three
pointers, But once a team hasconfidence Dorian Finney Smith had four himself early
on. Even when you get ahand in their face, it doesn't matter
at times because they've already seen theball go through the net, and they
are confident in their shot, andthey're already in rhythm, and these guys

(10:37):
are pros. You have to disruptthem in the first twelve minutes. You
can't get down twelve six minutes inlike the Clippers did tonight against Dallas.
That just can't happen, especially hereat home in front of your home fans,
in a huge game one. Nowwith the Clippers respond, yes,
I believe they will Tuesday night. But in terms of what wit were,

(11:00):
well, you could see it immediately. Clippers just couldn't find the range,
and that first quarter or that startwas really a sign of things to come,
because they would miss a bunch ofthree pointers right at the end of
this game, too. Appropriately, that was the story miss three pointers by
the Clippers. Sometimes it is amaker, miss league and makes. We're
on the Dallas side tonight. Theyhit seventeen three pointers. They win by

(11:20):
ten, with the final score onethirteen to one oh three. Before we
break here, let's go to Morrisand long Beach because I know he has
some positivity. Morris, give itto me. Well, my brother,
listen, listen, just be shadiabout this now, Dallas. From what
I understand, there's twenty seven andold when they're leading in the first quarter.
Now, oh cool, you socool? Anyway, Plus, this

(11:43):
is not only a revenge tour forthe Clippers, this is a revenge tour
for the for the mad Bias also, And we just gotta be honest about
it. There. They're supporting castplay a little bit better than our supporting
cast did. And Luca Donchas wantsthe NBA to know that his name,
his name should have been up therewith Steph Curry Joelian beating the Jokers for
the MVP, because I noticed whenthat brother's on the floor, he didn't

(12:05):
even have to have the ball. You mentioned the word confidence when he's on
the floor, they feel like they'refearless. They can do anything, and
the Clippers can hold your heads up. Hold your heads up. Because the
Mavericks hit seventeen threes out of thirty. I mean, come on, that's
that's what fifty one points. Soyou know it was there. It was
their night. They made him.And I think the Clippers is gonna win

(12:26):
the series. But you know,we're not going to run over them like
a lot more going over the grass. But you know, they stood up
today, indeflated their game, andit's a revenge tour for them, so
they got some pride just like us. But I agree with you. On
Tuesday, we're gonna be back atit all right. I'culated my friend Morris,
thank you for the phone call.More of her phone calls coming up
here on Clippers stock. We'll takeit till the top of the hour.

(12:46):
Eight seven seven five two zero elevenfifty eight seven seventy five two zero eleven
fifty is the phone number coming upnext. Though you'll hear from the head
coach t lou Clippers fall by tenin Game one. They got punched in
the face. I heard somebody quoteMike Tyson the other day. There is
something too that, But it's agame of adjustments, and I don't think

(13:09):
anyone's better at that than coach tlou But we're gonna have to see that
here Tuesday night, and the Clippersjust have to get some of these shots
to fall. The law of averagesis in their favor, all right.
More Clippers stock coming up next righthere on the Patriot Amblem fifty. The

(13:30):
LA Clippers playoffs are upon us,said Dallas Mavericks, you're listening to LA
Clippers playoff basketball on their exclusive haul. The Clippers started off thirteen of thirteen
from a free throw line in thefirst half. In the second half,
they go five of eleven, missedfive critical free throws down the stretch.

(13:54):
They lose by ten to the DallasMavericks in game one of his best of
seven games series. He's here inthe NBA Playoffs, first round in the
Western Conference. Welcome back into Clipperstock. I'm at a Maslin eight seven
seven five two zero eleven fifty eightseven seven five two zero eleven fifty as
the phone number. Marcus Morris reallystruggled just two of eight, but oh

(14:16):
of six from three as the Clippersas a team were eleven of forty,
but he missed two free throws inthe fourth quarter. Gen Rondo missed two,
Kawhi Leonard missed one, even thoughhe did have one of the best
dunks of the season on Maxi Kleibain the third quarter. We thought that
that would give the Clippers that joltof energy, and they did come out

(14:37):
with that right mindset early in thethird I felt like there was more juice
Patrick Beverley, he did go twoof four from distance. He hit some
big ones. He had ten pointsin just seventeen minutes, but Luca Doncheche
finishes with thirty one and only hadone of those points in the fourth quarter.
And the Dallas Mavericks as a teamwere good enough to outplay the Clippers

(15:00):
down the stretch in the final threeminutes, where the Clippers scored just three
points to Dallas is thirteen. Ido want to hear from the head coach
here, Tehron Lou. I knowwe have postgame audio of him speaking with
the media. What did you seein the second half. You guys were
able to really make those runs, especially down the stretch in the fourth quarter,

(15:20):
but unfortunately came up a little shorttoday. I think going small.
I'm spacing him out a little bit. You know, I think frazingis playing
the five. You know, wehad a space. The amount of this
space, i'side a little bit wasable to attack, get down hill,
get into the pain, and Imake plans for myself for our teammates.
So I'm going small and kind ofcreating that energy defensively as well, be
able to track Luca, fired Lucaand change our defensecremities as well. Thinks

(15:45):
we'll go next to till mare HeyTy with regards to trapping Lucas, it
seemed to really work for you guysin that third quarter, kind of making
other guys make shots. Did youfeel like you maybe you waited too later,
or did you want to see maybeyou just cool off eventually. How
did you make that decision you starttrapping him, Well, you're going on
the same page, you know afew times, you know, we wanted
to get out of hands in thefirst half as well, and we just
didn't execute the way we needed to. We had a lot of breakdowns,

(16:08):
of a lot of mistakes defensively thatwe didn't execute right. So we got
to clean those things up and we'llbe fine. But we all got to
be on the same page defensively ofwhat we're doing and what we're changing coverages
as well. Thanks. We'll gonext to Andrew Gray. It's the shooting
struggles tonight. Was that you feellike you like the shot quality though the
temp sup and it was just theshots weren't following, especially in that first

(16:32):
half. Or what would you makeof the offensive guys did generate. Oh,
I gotta take a look at it. But I thought, you know,
shot quality is pretty good in thefirst half. But I got to
look at it, you know, like I said, but we were getting
shots, we were getting the temps. You know, we didn't make it
early on. I mean we stillwe kept playing. You know. The
good thing about it, we onlyhave five turnovers that allowed us to stay
in the game. So we're gonnamake shots. We understand that. But

(16:52):
just defensively, you just gotta cleansome things up and make sure we're on
the same page. Thanks. We'llgo next to o y Ti. When
it came to Luca, how muchwas part of your plan entering the game
to have Kawai see time on Luca, especially like in the fourth quarter,
well, it really doesn't matter nowbecause the game is so different. You
know, you're gonna switch one throughfour anyway, so they're gonna pick that
matchup out and try to see quitingone on them. So, you know,

(17:14):
we switched it, and then wefired at him in the second half.
I'm getting a good job in thatfourth quarter, you know, I
think hold him to one point inthe fourth quarter, and mother guy step
up and made big shots, youknow, Hardaway made big shots, faced
men and made big shots. Andthen on Brunson, you know, you
just kind of got where you wantedto get to tonight. So we got
to do a better job with him. Is there anything you saw with PG
offensively to that slow start for himin that first half. No, Just

(17:36):
I'm going to get into a reallygood offensive rhythm. You know, I
gotta do a better job making sureI gave him in the spots and get
him in a position. So Igotta do a better job looking at the
film and just you know, seewhy I can you know, pick his
spots so we can get you know, more clean looks and give better shot
you know, give better shots, you know, to start the game.
Thinks them We'll go next to lotand when whether you guys are big or

(17:59):
small, there were some challenges withrebounds. The Mavericks got almost twenty second
chance points in this game. Likewhat do you need from both your your
bigs and the rest of the rostersas far as making those lineups work for
rebounding, Yeah, well, Ithink you know they have a stretch five
for Zinge's stretch five and cleber. So when Shod goes up, you know

(18:21):
Zoo's garden. You know for Zina'swhen the permimeter, it's hard for him
to get down and rebound the ball. So they do a good job.
I got spreading you out. It'sgonna be long rebounds and those are the
ones we gotta get to. Butyou know, when Zoo's on the perimeter,
when they's facing for zingis a cleverer, I's tough for him to get
down the rebounds. So we gotto do a better job collectively hitting bodies
and going to get it. We'renot only gonna cut from the corner,
We're only gonna they're gonna crash,So we got to do a better job

(18:44):
of getting two bodies. Good question, they're late talking about those second chance
points by the Dallas Mavericks. Itfelt like they got to every fifty fifty
ball out there, and when theydid, they would end up making the
Clippers pay a possession or two laterwhen they were extending them, especially in
the second half, they had somebig offensive rebounds. Clippers fall one thirteen
to one oh three in Game oneof those best of seven game series here

(19:08):
in the first round to the DallasMavericks. Coming up next year on clipper
Stock, we will have Justin Wilsonon eight seven seven five two zero eleven
fifty. Eight seven seven five twozero eleven fifty taking it to the top
of the hour here on clipper Stock, I'm into Maslin and this is the
Patriot EMILYM. Fifty. I thinkwe are squared up to take him out.

(19:33):
First round NBA playoff action is up. This is LA Clippers playoff basketball.
Clippers fall in Game one to theMavericks one thirteen to one h three.
Welcome back into Clipper Stock. I'mout of maslind eight seven seven five
two zero eleven fifty is the phonenumber joining the show though right now.
As our friend Justin Wilson. Youfollow him on Twitter at LA Clippers Film

(19:59):
does a great job with video breakdownsall over the place, justin out,
let's hop right into it here.Where did you think this game was lost?
Was it just as simple as oneteam made shots the other team didn't.
Was there an effort issue, alack of focus, especially early on
that first quarter. What was goingon with the Clippers where they just looked
out of sync at times? Well, I think there's never a singular reason

(20:22):
for why you win or lose thegame. There's always multiple factors. But
yeah, I mean, if youif you face a team that's seventeen of
thirty six on threes and you shooteleven of forty on threes, you'll you'll
probably lose, no matter, nomatter the adjustments, especially for a Clippers
team who are predicated on making shots. And that's the name of the game

(20:45):
for not just the Clippers but anyteam in the league. So it's very
hard to win when you don't makeshots. But even beyond that, you
gotta give credit to Luca Dontage. It was magnificent per usual today. He
picked us apart with his shot makingand then late game playmaking, and the
role players stuffed up and hit bigshots as well. So we've got our

(21:07):
work cut out for us, andyou know, you know, Dallas is
a really really good team, andwe've got to come with a little bit
more fight from the from tip andwe should be good long series ahead of
us. You mentioned their role playersin that fourth quarter really putting the Clippers
away, as Luca Dontage only hadone of his three one points in the
fourth but finished with eleven assists, ten boards. I think that's called a

(21:29):
triple double. But they had contributionsfrom a lot of different guys. Dorian
Finney Smith I believe he had sixpoints in that fourth quarter. Jalen Brunson
he had nine, Tim Hardaway Juniorfive, Chris DApp porzingis finally got things
going. He had six of hisfourteen points in the fourth. So how
do you think the Clippers are goingto play Luca dontch moving forward come Tuesday

(21:53):
night? Because even when they didload up against him, as you mentioned,
he was able to find the openguys. Well, you look at
it like this, right, TimHardaway Junior was eight of thirteen. Dorian
Phinney Smith was seven of nine andfour or five on threes. He had
eighteen points. Tim Hardaway Junior hadtwenty one points. You can't have that

(22:15):
and have Luca dont just go thirtyone on five of eleven. So I
in my opinion, I think theClippers got kind of scared with Lucas shot
making and as a result, thatallowed that allowed Luca to pick us apart
with his passing. I think offthe tip, they've got to make a
decision and commit to it whether Lucadon makes or missus. If you want

(22:37):
him to be a score, thenyou commit to him being a score and
you make sure that guys like Dorianand Tim Hardaway Junior are held in check.
Or if you want to just sellout on Luca and make sure that
he's not a score and make everyoneelse be too, you do that and
you stick with it regardless of who'smaking shots. But I thought that the
Clippers initial game plan was to giveLuca a cushion and force him to make

(23:02):
shots. He was making shots, and then that forced Lac into like midgame
adjustments and mid game adjustments are alwaystricky, you know what I mean,
because things are happening on a fly, other players here different things, and
it's very tough. So I thinkmoving forward, they've got to stick with
the game plan. If you wantLuca to be a score, stick with
it and make sure that he's scoringand no one else's And if you want

(23:26):
him to be a passer, andthen stick with that. But I thought
the Clippers got caught trying to dotoo much on the defensive end, and
Luca's too good for that final onefor you. Here's justin as. I
am unfortunately well up against it.Paul George has been up against it obviously
with all the talk going back tolast year's bubble. But I felt like
in the second half that was hugefor him moving forward in this series.

(23:49):
For him to respond and have sixteenof his twenty three points in the second
half. Where did he do toget himself going there? Or was it
just shots falling? Because I feltlike in the first half he did get
some it looks, but they weren'tgoing for him. That's pretty much it.
He had ten points in the fourthquarter on like four or seven,
and you know, he was oneof the main reasons why we had a

(24:11):
chance to win it down the stretchbefore the game got away from us.
But you know, players are gonnamake shots, players are gonna miss shots.
But I felt like he was engagedthe whole time, and he was
making plays. He was making playsand helping us, and that kind of
kept him in the game until hisshot making was able to catch up to
everything else. I thought he wasdoing all of the little things, taking

(24:33):
charges, getting into the paint. He got a nice pass of Patrick Beverly
in the third quarter, though.I thought he was just doing all of
the little things even when his shotwasn't falling, And then his shot kind
of came around, and so Ilike what I saw from him. Shots
are gonna be made, shots aregonna be missed. But if he's into
the game and playing aggressively, whichI thought he was, then he's gonna

(24:57):
be beneficial to us, you knowwhat I mean. So I don't have
much qualms with Paul George's second half. You kind of wish he was playing
that assertive in the first half, and hopefully he makes that adjustment in game
two. He is Justin Wilson followhim at La Clippers Film on Twitter.
Justin, thanks for doing this tonight. I still have another break before
