(00:20):
happen, Adam Asley, Well, don't try to free solo mount Batoombo as
Nick batoom ties a career high withfive blocks and the Clippers outpaced the Indiana
Pacers with a one twenty six toone fifteen victory in Indiana. Welcome into
Clippers Talk. I'm atam moslint eightseven seven five two zero eleven fifty eight
(00:43):
seven seven five two zero eleven fifty. Coming up on the show, we'll
have postgame audio from coach Lou andthe players after they win their sixth straight
game, longest current winning streak IndieNBA. And they clamped down again in
the fourth quarter, just as theydid on Sunday. The Clippers weren't playing
(01:04):
great defense for three quarters once again, and I thought it was going to
come back to bite them on theroad against a pretty darn good Indiana Pacers
team that I expect to make theplayoffs. They're talented. They're fifteenth in
offense, thirteenth in defense. Despiteall the injuries they've had going on,
(01:26):
Karris lavert Is back, they hadMalcolm Brogden and of course Demonte Sabonis,
and the Clippers were able to runwith them. This is a team that's
top ten in pace in the IndianaPacers, and the Clippers pretty much beat
them at their own game. Therewere some garbage time points late from Indiana,
(01:47):
but the difference was the first coupleminutes of the fourth quarter when the
Clippers once again flip flip, flipthat switch in the fourth and started playing
great defense, even better defense thanthey played against Detroit back at Staples Center
in that fourth quarter on Sunday, they gave up twenty five points after Detroit
(02:08):
was scoring at will. They hada thirty seven point third quarter, and
then the Clippers turned the water offfinally and the water was flowing. It
was a geyser, It was OldFaithful and the Indiana Pacers still had one
fifteen, but just eighteen of thosepoints came in the fourth quarter. Clippers
(02:29):
had just twenty six, but theywere able to outscore them by eight,
and it was an eight oh runthe first couple minutes of the fourth and
it was a special run. Firstof all, a great set play for
PG thirteen, who absolutely torched andhas haunted his old team in the Indiana
Pacers. He finished with thirty sixagainst them again. He had thirty six
(02:52):
against them in Indiana last season asa Clipper. I don't know if he
was this efficient though, four ofseven from distance, thirteen of twenty five
from the field. He had twentythree in the first half alone, plus
eight assists. Now, he stillhad five turnovers, but two of those
assists came in the fourth quarter andthey were alley oops to Terrence Mann,
(03:16):
who really provided that energy in thatspark once again, played twenty five minutes,
had twelve points, but seven ofthose came in the fourth the two
oops and then a three pointer, and the passing was contagious. They had
thirty five assists, a season highon Sunday tonight thirty four. Once again,
(03:39):
seventy percent of their maid shots wereassisted. It was a brilliant offensive
performance, and they were good enoughlate, and they showed that ability to
figure things out defensively, and Ithought a lot of that was Nicholas Batoum
and the way he played and theinspiring basketball he has been playing all season
long on veteran's minimum. He ledthem with a plus twenty two in the
(04:02):
plus minus category, had fourteen points, nine of those came in the fourth
quarter. But he had five BigDaddy Batoon blocks, and this is the
second straight game now. He hadthree blocks. Last game, first time
since twenty thirteen he's had back toback games with at least three blocks,
(04:23):
but this was the first time sincetwenty twelve since he's had five blocks in
a game. That ties a careerhigh. There were two things I didn't
think could be possible this season. One the Clippers being able to shoot any
better than they already were from three, and that's been happening recently. They
go thirteen of twenty eight. That'sforty six percent from distance. That forty
(04:46):
two percent they've been shooting, that'sjust gonna go up more. They're creeping
ever so closely to passing by theall time three point shooting record, held
by a team with a short andthree point line that only attempted fourteen in
a game in the ninety six ninetyseven Charlotte Hornets The second thing that I
didn't think could get any better forthe Clippers, Well, that's Nicholas Batoum
(05:10):
and his play. He was sogood early on in the season. He's
been steady, but his last fewgames now, I don't know if it's
just fresh legs Dad's strength, butfor him to be playing at this level
at the age of thirty two, when Charlotte really gave up on him and
(05:30):
stopped playing him, it's quite nota reclamation project, but it's quite a
rejuvenation of a career. I thinkit's just right place, right time.
Good fit on this Clippers team, great fit. Let's make it that perfect
fit. He's been so special allyear. But defensively, to have five
(05:53):
blocks, to be playing the fiveat times, to not back down from
anyone, to pick up t JMcConnell for ninety four feet, it looked
like there was an individual battle goingon there, maybe something personal, maybe
some trash talk. Early on,after McConnell had one of his patented steals
on an inbounds play by the Clippers, he only finished with two steals.
(06:15):
He does it every single game. It's unreal. But Nicholas Batoum had at
least two of his emphatic blocks onTJ. McConnell. It seemed like there
was a little something extra there, but there's been something extra all season long
with batoumb big batoon blocks, andSaint Nicholas has been blessing this Clippers team.
(06:40):
Before it was a lot of bigcorner threes. He would hit one
of those. In the fourth quarterof this game. He had a putback
after Terrence Man missed a layup intransition, critical baskets, pivotal shots,
momentum changing shots, and one ofhis blocks came near the end of the
third quarter, just like it didagainst Detroit on Sun. But just to
(07:01):
give you a taste here, here'sNoah Eagle on the call for one of
the five Pig Daddy Nicholas Batoon blocksback outside from McConnell, driving middle of
the dotted line, back outside outof the far side quarter. Lavert steps
it back one second, a shootgets it off. Nope, it was
blocked again. Who else but Nickblock tomb one twenty to one oh nine,
(07:23):
three h five to go. Fourthquarter, Patoon with its fifth rejection
of the night, back out hisfifth coming there in that fourth quarter.
And when you play defense like that. And we've talked about this a lot,
but without Patrick Beverly, without havingthat guy that's so inspiring to play
next too, who has that infectiousenergy, they had to find a way
(07:46):
to finally overcome that because the lastthree seasons now they just have never been
the same team without Patrick Beverley onthe floor, even though his numbers could
look pedestrian unless you look into theadvance to analytics stuff and how good he's
been from three the last few years. But it's his spirit, it's the
passion he plays with, and theClippers have been able to cultivate that finally.
(08:09):
Without him, it's Terrence Mann,it's Nicholas Batoum. It's been Reggie
Jackson at times, it's been Lukenard, who had a good game, some
spread out scoring throughout it with somebig buckets, had ten points on four
of eight shooting back to back games. He's been in double digits now.
But the mindset has flipped for thisteam now. You still want to see
(08:33):
them play better defense for forty eightminutes and you don't want to develop any
bad habits here where you always thinkyou can flip that switch and turn things
around in the fourth quarter because againstgreat teams, against the most elite teams,
teams that are also championship contenders likethe Clippers, you could run into
trouble there. But considering no KawhiLeonard in this game, no pat Bev,
(08:56):
no Serge Ibaka, they've been overcomingthe injury issue which they hadn't been
able to in the past, andnot having specifically Patrick Beverley for really most
of this season, Reggie Jackson hasbeen your starting point guard. Basically.
I love the way they played inthe fourth quarter. I thought Patrick Patterson
(09:16):
was special after he received a reallynice pass cutting through the lane from Paul
George Pg. Thirteen. Then hehad a nice kick out to Nicholas but
Tune for a three and made theextra pass in the corner to Terrence Mann
for a three. So it's justunselfish play and it's so enjoyable to watch.
(09:41):
And there was plenty of it lastyear too, but they've taken things
up a notch this year. TheClippers have offensively indicative by the fact that
they are the number one offense rightnow, not just in the league,
but all time. They have thebest offense right now in NBA history.
Now there's five six teams that haveoutpaced what the Dallas Mavericks did last season
(10:03):
when they set that mark. Butthe Clippers are at the top of the
heap. They've been better than everybodywith all these injuries. I want to
say, Paul George and Kawhi Leonardnow have combined to miss twenty five games
and they're still trying to get thattwo spot in the Western Conference. They
have the longest winning streak in theleague right now, and Paul George has
(10:28):
been especially special. His last fourgames now that he's played in he scored
thirty or more. Second longest streakof his career he had thirty six.
But he's been playing like that.Tee isn't bothering him at all, and
he has said postgame that he's notthinking about it. And when he has
another throwdown, this time a twohanded bassline, double clutch, double pump
(10:54):
dunk, you start to believe him. The foot, the right foot doesn't
seem to be an issue at all. His three point shooting that he was
so deadly, he was so potentearly on this season, it has returned
too. But I think there's aleadership aspect there that's also been different,
(11:15):
but overall just another special win bya special group here with this Los Angeles
Clippers team, they end up winningby eleven one twenty six to one fifteen
over the Indiana Pacers. Coming backTomarrazzarli will join me, plus will have
postgame audio from Coach Low Clippers inDetroit tomorrow. Yeah, they just played
(11:37):
him at Staples on Sunday, Iknow, and Detroit played well. Josh
Jackson, Pacy, watch out forhim, mister Steel, your girl Dawson.
He tried to steal a win fromthe Clippers. Clippers make it sixth
straight though. More Clippers stock comingup here on the Patriot Am eleven fifty.
This is LA Clippers Basketball. WhyLeonard is a destroyer of worlds?
(12:03):
Right now on the official home ofyour LA Clippers. Oh what a fine
zubots at George attacking in a rimand putting it down with two hands.
Paul George climbed to the imaginary ladderfor an emphatic was wash eighty one seventy
seven Clippers George? Yeah, Ididn't need to hear that. Sabonus play
(12:28):
again. That was a bad cutby me, but a great call by
Noah Eagle there huge throwdown by PGthirteen. Again, it's been a theme
all season long. By the way, a Visa zu Bots caught a body,
it was Demonta Sabonis. We'll havethat for you as well. Clippers
win one twenty six to one fifteenin Indiana over the Pacers. Welcome back
(12:50):
into Clipper stock. I'm at amoslin to eight seven seven five two zero
eleven fifty eight seven seven five twozero eleven fifty is the phone number.
Clippers just keep winning. All theydo is win, win, win,
sixth straight win, longest winning streetcurrently in the NBA. But they are
fourteen and four post All Star Break, and it's not like they haven't faced
(13:16):
plenty of adversity. It's not liket Lou hasn't gone or hasn't had to
go to plenty of different lineups.Multiple guys keep stepping up. These are
championship like habits, traits. Wedon't know if it's going to result in
that, but this is what youhave to have from a team. First
(13:39):
of all, when you get challenged, when you do face adversity, you
continue to overcome it. You findways to win games when you don't have
your best they've been doing that, and they just have this this chemistry out
there that just looks completely different thanthe last season. Nicholas Batoum has helped
with that. I think even whoare out right now, like Serge Ibaka,
(14:01):
has help with that. Reggie Jacksonbeing best friends with Paul George while
being one of the most reliable contributorson this team all season long. Tonight
notwithstanding, Reggie was just one ofseven, but he's been so good.
You can count on him and PatrickPatterson again this year. Every time Clipper
(14:24):
Nation wants to go after him,say while they play to Marcus Cousins or
I don't know about these Pat patminutes, he starts making plays. Six
points, four assists, five rebounds. He really kept the ball moving in
that fourth quarter when they're passing wasat its best. He was a big
(14:45):
part of that. But it's justgood to see them build and continue to
build these great habits. It's somethingt Lew has been talking about a lot,
speaking of let's see, we havesome mystery audio here for you.
Po scheme is it? Coach Toronlou Let's find out? All right,
(15:05):
Chris, all right, let's giveahead a little bit, maybe a little
bit more you alright, alright, let's go ahead, get started. First
question, will Cover, Hey,coach, last game, you talked about
how you've basically just thrown PG intothe fire with the pick and roll reps
as a passer in order to gethim and everyone else ready for the playoffs.
(15:26):
How do you think he did tonighton that front as a passer out
of the pick and roll and agreat job. I thought, you know,
when he was in the draft,Cover talked about how you've basically just
thrown PG into the fire. I'mnot used to this. Tim ready for
the sun roll A great job.I thought, you know, when he
(15:48):
was in the draft coverage and wetook advantage of getting down he will getting
into the paint, and then whenhe started blinting, I thought he made
the boy pass and read every singletime. So, like I said,
I just continue to keep getting betterat that, keep sharing a basketball.
And you know, two nights agoand thirty five assists and thirty four sis
tonight. So it's infectious. Whenwe're moving to basketball like that, we're
tough to beat. He'll move overto on its TI. PG started a
(16:14):
season so hot and then he hadthe toe injury and kind of learned how
to manage it. But now hescored thirty in like four straight games.
How is this the hottest groove you'veseen him in so far? And what
have you seen from him? That'sthis is making him play so well right
now? I think you know earlierin the season, this is this is
the way he was playing, youknow, and like I said, finally
getting getting healthy and you know, able to attack, get down, He'll
(16:37):
get into the paint, you know, dunking of basketball, finishing at the
round, so you know, makingat everybody passes and reads out to pick
a roll. And he's been great, you know. So like I said,
he's getting healthy and you know he'splaying at a high level like this.
You know, we're a tough team. He'll move over to till here
they attacking, gets on the wind. I know you said the thirty four
(17:00):
assistant pressure, but did Nick?Buttom's five blocks and pressure even more.
Yeah, they called it Nick Gobertafter the after the game, But I
mean, just we had a lotof those types of players until they were
just you know, Reggie had acouple of chance Man had a couple of
Nico just getting back in transition, you know, getting stops. You know,
we had a disadvantage. And youknow, I thought earlier in the
(17:22):
game, you know, that firsteight minutes of the game, we were
really tired. So I thought,we gotta just fight through the fatigue,
you know, be mentally, youknow, mentally, you know, tougher.
And we just kept telling the guys, I know, we're a little
fatigue. We've got to play throughit. We'll get to the second half,
we'll get our second win. Andlike I said, I just thought
a lot of guys, you know, did a lot of you know,
great things. Chance Band was greatout of the bench. I thought,
Pat, Pat gave us some great, great minutes at the backup five and
(17:45):
markets, you know, in thatthird quarter, you know, just to
get PG a little rest, tobe able to post him and for him
to come through the way he did, it was huge for us as well.
Let's move over to camera. Hey, good evening, coach, great
win. Oh you you mentioned itright there. I was gonna ask you.
Marcus has kind of been sliding underthe radar here with the big player
(18:07):
everybody else, so Paul George specifically, but he just keeps continue to be
consistent for you guys, And Iwas gonna ask you just elaborate on what
Marcus has brought to you, thatkind of silent assassin, if you will,
because everybody else has big games. He's just been really consistent. And
do you see it that way?Yeah? I do. And I just
think that you know, the wayhe used to basketball, we all know
that. But be able to posthim, especially when PG Kawa one of
(18:30):
those guys are out, you know, he becomes our second main score.
So just make sure we give himthe right amount of touches, keep him
engaged in the game, played throughhim, you know a little bit.
And he was able to do thatin that third quarter. Like I said,
he was able to carry us inthat third quarter, which allowed PG
to get some rest and also allowedus to get PG out early in that
third quarter with three minuts too inthe third so he can rest to start
(18:51):
the fourth quarter. So Marcus's playwas very huge, And like I said,
he was playing under the radar, but you know, he's been producing
for us at a high level. To Law, oh my god, Law,
I'm sorry, we're up against it. That's the only reason there was
Coach Lew I'm glad he was askedabout Marcus Morris there. We talked about
that pregame and how he has kindof been lost in the shuffle at times
(19:15):
because of just how good Kauai andPG thirteen have been this season. But
he has been top ten three pointshooter consistently, but the last couple of
games he's been really good. Hadthirty three his season high. Last game
for the Clippers Tonight finished with twentytwo I believe, but he had thirteen
(19:37):
in the first half. Got offto a quick start. Clippers got off
to a quick start, but Indianathey put up thirty four points in that
first quarter. Clippers had to rally. They led by as many as fourteen.
They put the clamps on in thefourth quarter and they win by eleven
in Indiana. Coming up next,we'll I've Tolma Azarrely on from Clutch Points
(20:00):
for more analysis. Clippers make itsixth straight. They're in Detroit tomorrow and
you're listening to Clippers talk here onthe Patriot ambly in fifty every week every
other baby, where I see thesame, I make a promise if to
go with me, this is LaClippers basketball. Kolwhi Leonard is a destroyer
(20:26):
of worlds right now on the officialhome of your La Clippers moved through his
right off the zoopot screen with sixto shoot, cross pass inside, Oh,
look out a Feats and suppots justput another man on his poster.
It's a month to supportis with aleft handed finish. Big Zoo went seven
(20:48):
of eight for his fourteen and sevenin the ball game. I think four
of his first five mates we're alldunks. He's been doing it all season.
He's just nasty. He's looking toend you at the basket. So
it's PG and Kawhi Leonard. Recently, Clippers though win tonight without the claw
one twenty six to one fifteen inIndiana over the Pacers. Welcome back in
(21:11):
new Clippers doc. I'm at amoslind and you're listening to the Patriot AM
eleven fifty eight seven seven five twozero eleven fifty is the phone number.
Happy to be joined by the manwho covers the Clippers four clutch points.
He's been doing it for years, been coming on this show for a while.
It's Tomair Azarrelie. Follow him onTwitter at t O m e er
(21:32):
a z a r l y TolmairPaul George in Aviza Zubas since we just
heard from him there. They hada nice two man game going. It
wasn't just all PG thirteen and TerrenceMan. Is that something they can tap
into even more. I know there'sjust sixteen games left, but those two
guys, that connection was special tonight. Well. I mean, first of
(21:56):
all, I didn't thank you forintroducing me like an old season better and
I appreciate that. The Nicholas Batoumof report, you know PG. You
know, we've we've seen him tryto, you know, work through the
two injuries, been dealing with thelast couple of weeks, and you know,
(22:17):
he's been obviously taking some more primaryball handling duties. He's actually the
lead assistant on the team right nowat five point five, I believe,
So, you know, I thinkthis is a work in progress. Were
still learning to play with each other. I mean ty Lewis said that they're
really trying to, you know, put more sets in and run more sets.
And I think we saw that thelast couple of games where guys sort
of appear to look out of stink, but it's not really that they're just
(22:40):
trying to learn each other and learnthe sets that Lewis has an inputting,
and I think we're starting to seeit, you know, you know on
the court. Now we've see sixstreet wins Zoo and PG. Like you
said, I've got a really goodchemistry on the court. PG is really
found a shot for one and Ithink his aggressive is going towards the basket,
not only to drive and kick, but to drive. I've been Score
has been a defining change in thisteam and his play both of the playmaker
(23:07):
under the score. I think earlierin the year he was driving more to
driving kick because the team was shootingso well and generating so many great looks
from beyond the arc, but hewasn't really going to score at the rim.
He's just sort of driving kicking,And now over the last couple of
weeks, you know, we've seendunks and more free throw attempts, and
I think we've just seen a muchbetter PG when it comes to driving and
scoring. And I think that's reallychanged the outlook of the Clippers options when
(23:32):
it comes to him. So,you know, if he keeps up that
aggressiveness, Zubats has been zo Bots. He's been, you know, one
of the best offensive players this year. You know, field goal percentage,
offensive rating. He's been up thereall year, so that's thought surprising.
But I think the difference has beenwhen PG becoming more aggressive as a scorer,
especially when driving. That's really helpedthe Clippers open up that offensive bit
(23:55):
more when it comes to him inthe two man game that he has with
Zoo or Serge when he was healthy. So yeah, yeah, officials and
calls be damned. He's hell benton getting to the rim. Kawhi Leonard
has been the same way when bothof them are that locked in in attack
mode, being that aggressive on bothends. I do think there's a trickle
down effect when everybody sees their superstarsplaying like that. But even though the
(24:17):
Clippers weren't great through three quarters, once again they finish strong, just like
they did against the Detroit Pistons. But I thought Nicholas Batoum was so key.
In fact, we were texting backand forth about this, how many
guys were good tonight, But NickBatoum with those five blocks. I think
you asked coach Lou post game wejust had the audio about if he was
(24:37):
impressed by that. But he's playinglike a young buck. It's incredible to
see the bounce that he's had.I don't know if that's contagious too,
because all of a sudden, Pg'sgot more bounce, Kawhi's got more bounce.
It feels like this team is tryingto peek at the right time and
ramp up as we get closer tothe playoffs. But Nicholas Batoum playing his
best basketball right now. When hewas playing so well to start off the
(24:59):
season, I didn't think that waseven possible. I mean, look at
I'm gonna throw a little Pokemon referencehere, But if Nick Patouma evolves the
Nick Gobert, as Tyler just said, you know, opponents of the Clippers
are going to be in trouble. But now, look, I mean even
I think Nick himself has said thathe surprised himself a bit in terms of
the role that he's been given. You know, the starter the start of
(25:19):
the year, and then, asyou know, twenty twenty five minute,
the guy off minute a game, guy off the bench for the Clippers.
Now, I think he surprised himselfof it. I think the five blocks
ties his career high. You know, it's foculate. We're going to see
on a nightly basis. But whatwe are going to see in a lightly
basis from him is the you know, the actives, hands and deflections,
(25:41):
the extra pass. You know, even even though he might have an open
shot, he's kicking out for aneven better shot in the corner. I
think this's just sort of what NickPatoma is. I think I really liked
the two man game with him inRondo. I think I was talking about
this with Justin Russo, but theyjust have a little get two men get
together because they're both smart veterans. They both really like to pass the ball,
(26:03):
get other guys involved first, andso once this team just continues to
gel like as we're saying, Imean, the sky's the limit, but
the two is a big part ofthat. So you know, he's been
nothing but phenomenal all year long.So I mean, if the Clippers have
been to be ecstatic with what they'vegotten from him, and Rondo found him
for an easy one cutting to thebasket in the fourth quarter, Rondo just
(26:25):
four points. They were all thefree throw line. I don't mind that
because he was aggressive, he wastaking what the defense gave him. He
took just three shots, but hestill had five assists. Just one turnover
was in foul trouble. But overall, what's your assessment or letter grade on
how good Rondo has been so faras a Clipper. You know, Rondo
(26:45):
is a bit better than I expectthat, I would say, mostly because
I think, you know, everyonethought he'd be sort of pushed the pace
guy, where he'd be pushing thepace and helping guys get get better off
looked. Excuse me, oh damn, dog's better look in transition. I
think the last couple of games wesaw that, you know, guys like
Marks, guys like PG weren't reallyready for some of his passes, some
(27:07):
of his GoAhead passes, And Ithink once guys started to getting used to
it, it just you know, helps him get even easier looks in transition,
make guys force the defense to movearound as once you do that.
I think that's that's sort of beenRondo's biggest impact so far. I think
he had a couple of key playshere in the second quarter where the Clippers
often looked at litle staged and hegot to the basket and drew a couple
(27:29):
of fouls, and that really helpedhim in that department. Yeah, Rondo
has been exactly short of a bitbetter than that expect it's but you know,
today was a TNT game. TNTRondo has been a thing. I
think we really got to see howhe continues to mesh whence Beverly gets back,
when Sebakia gets back withs Kali's back, because what has this team played
one game healthy since Fondo was acquiredbut a bit of a small symphathize.
(27:55):
So a lot of work still todo, but I think the early returns
have been good. They still haven'thad searge of Baka. He hasn't played
in about a month now, sohopefully right. Yeah, so he's on
the mend. He is, TomairAzarrely follow him at t O M E
r A z A r l Yhe covers the Clippers for clutch points.
One more for you, Tomair. How much does seeding matter for this team?
(28:18):
Can they still get that second seed? I don't think seating really matters
for this team. I think youknow, you asked the players, you
asked Pilu. They're gonna stay. They just want to be playing well and
be healthy going into the playoffs. And I kind of agree at this point,
like this team is what it iswhen they're healthy, they're good.
(28:42):
They're championship contender. I don't thinksheeting will really matters as much because when
they're on their a game, whenthey're healthy, I think it's gonna be
really tough to beat them four timesout of seven. So, you know,
if you're sacrificing, you know, the two seeds, maybe you get
the three seed and you're healthy.I think the Clippers will live with that.
I just I don't think this teamis one that really needs home court
(29:03):
advantage, and obviously you'd like tohave it. Fans are coming back in
a couple in a couple of days, I think, so it would all
help them. But you know,I think helps help them, you know,
playing well with the ultimate thing thatthey need. If they're healthy,
if they're playing the right way,the way Tyler wants them, playing inside
outside offense and playing aggressive when theygo in the basket, I think they'll
be okay. I don't think seematters as much. I mean, the
(29:26):
two seed would be great, butI just don't think it's as important as
maybe last year or years pasted. He is Telmara Zarli again. He does
it for clutch points. They're theoutlet with the great memes. They got
