Speaker 1 (00:00):
You can count on one hand the number of guys
in college athletics over the last two generations that have
accomplished what he has. Mike Krzyzewski, Nick Saban, maybe to
a degree, coach Osburn, Francis Allen, the gymnastics coach in Nebraska.
They don't come along every day. This is a big deal,
There's no question.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
I mean you think about what John Cook has done,
not only to the state, to the sport. I mean,
he's made Nebraska volleyball an iconic brand. I mean he
went from playing in a four thousand seat coliseum to
filling up every venue they play in, whether it's in Lincoln,
our Seattle, Washington, or Maryland and Northwestern to a football
(00:41):
stadium and setting a world record for attendance. I mean,
he's exploded the interest in volleyball to the point where
two professional teams have come into Omaha. I would say
writing the backs of the success of Nebraska volleyball and
the fan base that he's created enough to the point
where now they're filling up these venues for professional teams
(01:02):
in Omaha. And you know, what Nebraska volleyball has done
to this state is a big reason why all that's happened.
So yeah, his impact is real, and you only wish
he could have gone out with a national championship. And
I know he promised this group of seniors he was
going to be with them their whole way back in
twenty twenty one. He told Lexi Rodriguez in that group,
Lindsey Crawsey, that I'll be with you for your entire
(01:24):
careers and they'll all walk off here together now And
unfortunately didn't get the title, but man, his impact will
be remembered forever.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
And it's a new era of college athletics too. Cook
is pushing seventy and he came from an era where
you recruited a kid, they came in, they committed to
the program for four or five years. The transfer portal
has changed that. He's always demurred a little bit on
this when asked if this is a factor and his
(01:53):
overall happiness as a coach, But in your opinion, how
much of that might have factored into this decision.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah, he's one of the lucky ones. I think his
roster doesn't have to deal with it at the level
of others. If he loses players, it's usually on good terms.
Mean Ali bait Horse is a great example of that.
She left here and still received standing ovations coming back
into the arena and almost had her own senior day
coming back here with the USC this year, getting the
(02:22):
recognition from the crowd. But she left because she got
beat out because he's recruited such good players, and everybody understood.
So when that happens here, it's because they've recruited over
players and they move on, possibly to another opportunity. But yeah,
and also from an NIL perspective, Nebraska Volleyball and maybe
Texas are going to be the two best positioned schools
(02:44):
within IL to really do what they want to do
as far as roster acquisitions every single year.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
You know, Sean, one of the things excuse me, Rosie
just saying. One of the things that occurred to me
is usually when you have a legendary coach reaching this
stage of his career, there starts to be some speculation.
Well he maybe had. I didn't hear any of that
regarding John Cook. Did you did you have any idea
this might be coming?
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Well this summer I had somebody close I know to
Danny Busbooon Lane Kelly just said I'd be watching this one.
I mean I think it's coming sooner rather than later.
I mean, those close to the program knew Danny bus
Boom Kelly was the logical successor and was positioned to
be John's successor, And I do think there had been
conversations very privately over the last year. But yeah, John
(03:32):
does a pretty good job of tell he doesn't, you know,
just tell a lot of this study kept it really
really guarded, you know, to the point where the announcement
yesterday was a surprise. I would say maybe thirty minutes
before it came is kind of when we got indication
to be ready for this announcement, which is rare in
today's world to not really know ahead of time where
(03:53):
somebody might be able to break the scoop before the
announcement comes out. That they did a pretty good job,
as Troy Danna said yesterday, of keeping this thing quiet
all the way up till four thirty.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Well, plus, he's a moving target. I mean, this guy's
he's out there. He changes from season to season, you know,
one days into being a cowboy, the next days into yoga,
the next days into Chinese philosophy. So trying to get
a read on him it would be difficult. But this
is a big risk for Danny bus Boom Kelly. We
(04:24):
have seen this movie before. I take you back to
nineteen ninety seven. All this program is in such great
shape it can run itself. No, it can't. And if
you were to do a deep dive on Frank Soldiz,
he would tell you it would have been really good
if I could have been the guy that followed the
guy that followed Tom Osborn.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah. I still think Danny though, with what she's done
as a head coach at the Power four level, taking
Louisville to two national championship games, and they were a
losing program when she inherited, and then she brought them
to become a national power. So she's has read you're
going to be I don't know who else would make
(05:04):
more sense than this for Nebraska, especially you know from
nearby Courtland. She's married to a Nebraska football player, Lane Kelly,
and Omaha native. I mean, she's about as Nebraska volleyball
as it gets, a national champion, a captain, just well respected,
if anything, you know, I think she fits maybe the
style where the game's all heading and it's exciting to see.
(05:27):
I mean, we've all known Nanny for a long time,
and she was. She was a beloved Husker as a player,
and she's going to be a belove Husker as a coach.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
All right. One other thing this business on April twenty
sixth is the spring game done? Are we not doing
that anymore? What the hell is a fall preview festival?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, they're I mean they're basically going to be done everywhere. Now,
when you cut down to one hundred and five players,
you have the spring portal window, and obviously you're paying
these players a lot more money. I made the reference.
I mean you're paying some of these guys more money
than Troy Dan and doctor Rodney Bennett making.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
It's true.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
And so if they get hurt in the spring game,
guess what, you still have to pay them. So I
do think this is going to be the norm for most,
if not all schools to not really conduct a television
scrimmage and and move forward because this one hundred and
five thing creates other issues with the transfer portal other
(06:20):
things too. You might lose a player that looks good
on the scrimmage you put on TV because somebody poaches
them off your roster. You know, there's a lot of
things on top of the injuries and nil pieces that
I think you're you're going to see this happen a
lot of places.
