(00:00):
Well, a huge story in theworld of sports, said Jim. And
I've been talking about it for oneof the last like everybody else, last
twenty four forty eight hours, andwe've given him a few days to uh
probably gather some thoughts and to seewhere he's at right now. And he's
been a friend of the program allaround. Great guy. Joel Damon joins
us right now here on the BeaconHumming hotline. Hello, Joel, how

(00:22):
are we doing? Guys? We'redoing good. How are you doing?
I mean, like just personally professionallywith how everything is transpired here in the
last few days. Yeah, Imean I woke up on I don't know
was it Tuesday morning? I thinkwas a morning two days ago, forty
eight hours ago. Woke up,had a friend of mine send me a

(00:43):
screenshot of the TV and said,is this real? I said, No,
that's not real. It's a joke. And then five minutes later,
didn't they a five player? Someoneelse texted me and it's like, is
this real? I'm like, no, like, quit falling to this stupid,
terrible joke. And then I hadsomeone else text me, I'm like,
what is going on? I goto Twitter and sure, enough it's

(01:04):
happening. So it was to apoint that it was just actually unbelievable,
like it just wasn't a possibility.Um, so that's how I caught off
guard. I was, but thewhole thing. But um, you know,
who knows where this goes and whatI don't think. I don't think
the tour knows. I don't thinkanyone else with what this means for the
game of golf going forward. Joel, do you and other players feel betrayed
by your commissioner? Yeah? One, Um, I can't imagine. I

(01:34):
mean, there's not a player Ishouldn't say that. I'm not I'm not
playing this to becoming home in Phoenixtheory. But um, anyone I've talked
to, anyone who's close to thegame, feels that, yeah, that
that Jay's completely betrayed. The membershipwere supposefully a player run tour. Um.
I've always thought that was kind ofa joke because I knew that wasn't
quite true. But um, youknow, for you, for two or

(01:56):
three years, you preach loyalty andmorality and all this stuff, and um,
all of a sudden, you're theone that takes a big bag of
money from these scary him efforts,as philmikls them call them. So yeah,
I think we're all pretty betrayed byby j And UM just doesn't really
sit very well. Just just doesn'ttaste very good. What would the process

(02:17):
be to from a player's perspective,to try and remove him as the head
of the tour that is above mypaycread Um, I have no idea what
the actual process is or what thatwould look like. I do know it's
possible, and I there's no wayhe survives this. I don't know if

(02:39):
he survives a week or a monthor a year, but I don't think
that he's going to survive this.I mean, he's just a puppet.
It seems like he's just a puppetand all of this. Um, I'm
pretty uneducated on this. Well Ithink everyone is, because we just don't
know anything. But at the sametime, UM, it doesn't it doesn't.
Like I said, it doesn't smellvery good, doesn't taste very good.
And as a guy who's been aroundfor seven years and um kind of

(03:01):
hangs out with different circles amongst thetour membership, I just can't imagine that
this is gonna go over very wellfor very long. Yeah, it just
one thing that has come out here. And last you know, the day
or two and we we discuss theyou know, Rory's press conference yesterday.
And I'm not sure if you ifyou watch it or saw snippets of Rory's
press conference yesterday or maybe a redabout it. But Joel this idea that

(03:24):
you know, everything's going to bestatus quo. Oh, the tour will
continue to be the PGA Tour. It's just now all these groups are coming
together. See. I just Idon't see how anyone can think that it's
just going to be status quo.I don't. I mean, I'm not
a smart business person. In fact, I'm probably an idiot. But when
one group, the Public Investment Fund, which is the you know, the

(03:46):
arm of the Saudi government, comesin and is worth six hundred and twenty
billion dollars and they are the leadon this new entity they've just created,
and the gentleman that runs that fundis now the the executive of this new
league, and then Jay Monahan reportsto him. I mean, don't you
feel as if that you are nowbeing run by these guys that started live

(04:11):
rather than the PGA Tour. Yeah, I mean, I'll go back,
and I'm not a very good businessmanmyself. UM, and I don't know
the answers. I don't know.Um, it doesn't. It's I do
think the turs in status quo forat least a year or two. UM,

(04:31):
I think obviously this is a verylong term play by the cis UM
and the whole Saudi government regime whateverthey're called. Um, yeah, I
don't, I don't. It doesn't. It doesn't seem like it's going to
be status quo, does it.Otherwise they wouldn't be a part of it.

(04:53):
Um. I'm sure that there's biglong term plans. I'm sure.
Um, this just feels like it'sway more and golf like if you just
break it down into much more ofa worldwide thing and or a US thing,
even like we're just golfers, we'rejust little ponds in this thing.
This seems like a way bigger monetarygovernmental thing than just golfers playing golf,

(05:17):
because if you think about it inthat sense, I mean, this means
almost nothing to the general US populationand definitely the world population. So I
just feel like we're little ponds ina much bigger game that is going on
that, you know, is verysegretive and no one really knows about or
you know, half the people don'tcare. So if you look at it

(05:38):
and that sense, it's just golfand best players. We don't have a
choice anymore. We have a choiceto go to Live if they want to
do. If we're willing to gotake that money and see a part of
that and the sport washing that wasinvolved, that's fine. But now we
don't have a choice, Like Idon't like where am I going to go
play? Am I gonna go playit? Like on the Mexican Mini Tours
or something like I'm going to showI have to play. You know,

(06:00):
the PGA Tour is the best league, so I'm gonna play in that,
And they have the most money,so I'm gonna play in that. I
don't have to like where the moneycomes from. But I also don't have
a choice in it now, whichkind of sinks. Yeah, Joel,
I imagine you had discussions with Liveabout going over to their tour. I'm
curious how much you were offered andwhether other players now in light of what
happened on Tuesday, regret that theydidn't go last year. We myself never

(06:28):
made it to the offer term sheets. I didn't like it that far that
I've investigated further, probably, butI just didn't like where the money was
coming from. That was just mywhat it came down for me. I
couldn't like, I couldn't put myhead on my pillow at night and be
happy with where the money was comingfrom. And you know, that's my
personal opinion. Whatever. Other peoplecan take the money, that's fine.

(06:51):
I'm not gonna hold it against them. But yeah, I imagine there's a
great deal of players who you know, made it along further in the process
than Knee or whatever it was,you know, down that road, and
probably wish they would have taken itnow because now we're all basically taking the
money. Um So yeah, I'msure there's a lot of upset people who

(07:13):
wish they could have taken the bigbag of mine and ran and all of
a sudden it's gonna be all okayand a couple of years later. So
um yeah, I'm feeling a lotof unrest amongst amongst the membership for sure.
Joel Damon is with US Professional Golferof course at Clarkston, Washington,
went to you dub We've had themon the show many, many times star
a Full Swing, and I'll tellyou right now, Full Swing Part two

(07:35):
is going to be damn pretty entertainingwhen it comes out next year. As
they acknowledged that they were following thisas that story broke a couple of days
ago, you kind of alluded toit there. I mean, you chose
not to go down that path whenmaybe that you know, initial you know,

(07:55):
offers were made and you just didn'treally want to pursue it where the
money came from. And you know, some have that stance and some people
just don't have that stance. Igo back to that Full Swing episode where
where DJ just said, hey,you know, if someone's going to pay
more money and workless, everyone woulddo it. And I we Jim and
I've talked about a lot that weget that perspective. I think everyone gets
that perspective now that you know nowlike, how do you how do you

(08:20):
handle that moving forward knowing that wherethis money now is going to be coming
from is from an entity that youclearly are not comfortable with. Yeah,
I think it's kind of like Rorysaid on I guess he said on Wednesday
morning prestat or maybe it's whatever. He's resigned to the fact. Like,
I mean, if you look atwhat they're offering soccer players now, and
you know they've been in sports fora bit and there I think they just

(08:43):
paid one hundred million dollars to themiddle of the road soccer player, right,
Like, that's just ridiculous. Butwe don't, Like I said,
I don't have a choice. LikeI my dream is a player on the
PJS who are growing up. Imade it here. Um, I've had
a good run at it, andmy run is not over. And I
still have a I have a fourmonth old kid at um whom I mean

(09:05):
I have. This is how Isupport my family. I cannot support my
family by doing something else. Um, you know, with anything else.
I'm a golfer. I play golf. Um it's been great to me.
I've been very blessed in this game. And now, like so, what
it comes down to is me,I'm gonna show up and play in the
highest league tour possible, which isa PGA tour for me right now,

(09:28):
I'm gonna go play where the mostmoney and the most persons are and you
know, the best bank for mybuck and I don't really have a choice
on anything else of that matter atthis point. So I'm gonna show up
at US Open next week, I'mgonna play I'm gonna play The Travelers after
that. I'm gonna go play Detroitthe Rock and Morge after that and we'll
figure it out. So I justdon't have a choice. M I can't
go to another two or so Ican't go the DP World, or I
can't go play in Europe all ofa sudden, I can't go and play

(09:52):
in Asia. I mean, theseare all governed by the same people now,
So Um, when it comes downto it, I'm just a professional
golfer who plays on the PGA tour. Um, I'm gonna go do my
best being good at that and sowherever I end up and wherever the checks
come from, I don't really havea choice. Hey, Joel, that
meeting, that meeting with a commissionerthere in Canada, I imagine you got

(10:13):
all kinds of texts from fellow players. Was there anybody that was like,
okay with it, and this isgonna be you know, we just have
to live with it and it'll beall right in time. Um. I
haven't spoke to anyone. I dothink that as clear heads will prevail over
time that like, yeah, it'sit's probably gonna be like golf will probably

(10:37):
be Golf is always gonna be okay, just like there's probably just gonna be
more inflective money. So instead ofyou know, twenty million dollar verses,
maybe there's thirty million dollar verses, and maybe the John Deer instead of being
eight million, goes up to fifteenmillion. Now, like I think in
ten years it's gonna be fine andall of this is just going to be
under you know, kind of washedaway and no one talked about anymore.
But that's what the goal of thiswhole sport washing thing is, just dumping

(11:00):
money into this that makes them lookbetter. So yeah, I don't know
anyone who's okay with it. Um. That meeting sound like it's pretty intense
and there's plenty of people firing atit. I'll be curious with the US
Open is because now you have everytop player in the world there, and
you have both sides there. You'velived and you have players. So m
I'm glad. I'm going to bea very close fly on the wall for

(11:22):
all of it next week, andI'll be an interested spectator and all of
it. Hey, Joe, Ilove Rory McElroy. I just love how
candid he is. But I hesitateto ask his question because maybe you're gonna
tell me he's not who he appearsto be. But is he a well
like guy on tour? Rory mis well like, very well respected.

(11:45):
Of course, he was always on. I think the membership was a little
bit iffy on him when he startedscreaming and for designated events and fifty man
fields and no cut events, becausenow you're you're shutting guys out like myself.
You know, you're shutting out thebottom half of the bed. You're
even in the middle of the TJtour, you're shutting out. So I
think you know that when him andTiger were having these meetings last year and

(12:07):
trying to set up this new tourin the designated events like that was very
uh. Um, I think Ishut out some of the tour membership,
But overall, he's very well liked, he's well respected, he's obviously well
spoken. Um. I think Iwould say, you know, a large
majority of the PJ tour is afan of Rory. We just got a
little bit sideways and kind of whathis goals as a BJ tour were and

(12:31):
and you know what the what majorityof the memberships, which is, you
know, not top thirty in theworld. So I think that was a
little bit But um, overall,I think Rory is well liked. Yeah,
do you think if if you watchedit yesterday, do you wish he
was a little bit more forceful withhis feelings in his opinion? He seemed
kind of resigned to the fact thatthis was happening and almost you know,
here's a guy that's you know, was stabbed in the back by Jay Monahan.

(12:52):
There's no getting around that, andhe seemed to come out in the
press conference and almost just support JayMonahan and I And I contrast that maybe
with the comments from Brando SHAMBLEI who'son the other side of it, who
you know, called it the saddestday you know in the sport. Um,
how did you take away maybe Rory'spress conficer and just the way he
carried himself, I think where hewas still in a little bit of shock

(13:15):
himself. Apparently he had just heardfour hours prior to that or whatever.
You know, you're at six thirtyin the morning and we all heard it
nine thirty espost or tens or whateverit. So, Um, but what
are he supposed to say by orJ Like we got to get rid of
the commissioner, Like that's not You'renot gonna come out and say that.
And he, I mean, hestill has all the more details than anyone

(13:35):
else does at this point. So, um, I think that he's gonna
be fine. Yeah, he saidhe feels like a sac official lamb.
I mean they threw him out there, and um, yeah, would I
think he he portrayed himself as youknow, feeling a little bit betrayed,
and but at the same time, like what are you gonna do? What
is he not going to show upat the US Open? Like is he

(13:56):
not gonna go play on the PJtwo or like I think we're all just
kind of resigned to the fact thatthis is what it is for the next
bits and there's nothing we can doabout it. Unfortunately, he last thing
for you. They think that thisthing came came about really hastily fast and
kind of with no details. Therehave been just these rumors swirling that John

(14:20):
Ram was close to signing with Live. Is that something that's been talked about
in the players circles. Uh yeah, there's always floating around like that.
I don't pay much attention to them. If you look at all the sources
where they came from, they're mostlyfrom the live side of things, So,
um no, I can't imagine thatthat would be possible. But I've

(14:46):
been wrong about other players going overthere, so uh yeah, I thought
there's always rumors flowing around everywhere. But um, any other top guy leaving
now, well, now I thinkLiz is gonna basically be blown up anyway,
So I don't think it's gonna mattera whole lot. But um,
there's always rumors. But at somepoint, I think all those top guys
that we're gonna go, we're gonnago, and I think everyone's going to

(15:07):
kind of stand paddle where they're atus. This is what I believe.
Anyways, got you, Uh well, let me I got one more.
Actually, would you would you welcomethem back? Do you think they should
be able to come back? Doyou think Bryson and and and Rory excuse
me, and Brooks and these guysin DJ should be allowed back on the
tour if they apply for it.Uh? I mean they they have to

(15:31):
there's got to be some sort ofpenalties. There's gotta be some sort of
and I'm not starting to figure thatout, but I mean find suspension,
I don't know, cleaner golf shoesin the locker room for a week or
something. I don't know. Butthey they're going to be back in some
capacity. It sounds like someday, but they're not. They're it's not likely

(15:52):
they're just gonna show up and beback on tour anytime soon. Like if
I'm gonna be this summer, itprobably won't be next year. But in
some capacity, yeah, I'm surewe'll all all the top players will be
back together, playing in events often. But I don't know what that looks
like. But I'm I assure youthat if they just show back up at
a tour event, that ain't gonnalook good, and that's going to get

(16:15):
real ugly for guys like myself andthe middle and bottom half of the tour
membership and even all the guys whostay. If those guys just show back
up, that's going to get ugly. So I can't imagine that's going to
happen. Joel, I always appreciatethe cannedness and just the honesty and it
we always appreciate the time. Thankyou so much today, Yeah, thank
you. Guys appreciate it.
