Speaker 1 (00:00):
And welcome to this episode of the State Trunk Tour podcast.
I'm Erk Paulson and heading into August here, so much
is going on around the state that's road trip worthy.
Of course, Wisconsin State Fair kicks off July thirty first,
runs through August tenth. County fairs abound, Wisconsin Valley Fair
runs through August third, and special events are happening around
things like mustard and ripped beer and brots and racing
(00:20):
tall ships and more. You notice we mentioned bronze and
yes we're diving into Bronz books and boats in this
episode with a dive into Sheboygan. Legendary bron Days is
back once again in Sheboygan Kuwanas Park Saturday, August second,
and their beautiful Bookworm Gardens has a wonderful family friendly
event starting August fifth that runs through the into the weekend.
(00:41):
And then on top of that, the Mercury Racing Midwest
Challenge is back to Roar on Lake Michigan with a
slew of racing boats and crafts that will rock the
city of the lake and your insides with some very
fun action both on the water and with events on land.
We're going to talk with Shelley Harms from Visit Sheboygan.
She'll be joining us to talk about all of that
in just a moment right here on the State Trunk
(01:02):
Tour podcast. And joining me now is vice president of
Marketing and public Relations for Visit Sheboygan, Shelley Harms. Hello, Shelley,
good morning. It is so good to talk with you again.
And boy, we're getting into the height of summer with events,
and there's a dizzy array in the city of Rots.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I mean, my goodness, yes, yes, there is. It's We
just finished up a very crazy weekend with the Midsummer
Festival of the Arts with John Michael Cole Art Center,
and now we just hit everything full force with all
of the August events.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
It is pretty wild. I want to start with a fun,
little family activity that the kids love, and that's Bookworm Gardens.
As we come up on August. Here we're talking three
major things here. We'll start with the Fairy Folk Festival
at Bookworm Gardens, which is kind of this ideal playland
for kids, and it's really kind of fun for the
grown ups too.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
It is it is. Bookm Gardens is magical and this
time of the year, I mean all year long, it's great.
But right now the summer's summer flowers are in full
peak and the bright colors. But they really love doing
things with the kids, and that's what the fairy Festival is.
The kids can really reimagine and dress up and have
fun and they have cute little fairy folks running around
(02:18):
and they have little fairy Festival. It's just it's magical.
You create things out of the art and the flowers,
and yeah, the kids love it and the adults love
it too. And I mean, who doesn't love walking through
a bright and cheery botanical garden.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah, you know this time of the year when everything
is out and just fully green, it's so wonderful. In May,
when that first pops out, that's when you remind yourself,
oh my god, we do live in a beautiful paradise,
right right? We do? Yes, Yes, So you can go
to Bookwormgardens dot org and find out more about that.
Of course, visit shebweygen dot com has details as well,
(02:53):
so get that on your calendar. It runs from August
fifth through the tenth. Now, before that, we're not going
in chronological order here, but before that is an annual
big celebration Sheboygan has long been known as a city
of broughtwurst and great sausages, and Brought Days is back,
even though it's just a single day this year.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Correct, Yes, that is Saturday, August second, a full day
of events, live music, there's a carnival area, there's a marketplace,
and there is definitely a brought eating contest, which is
always the highlight. Everybody loves to watch that and some
people actually like to partake in that and eat as
(03:33):
many brats as they can within a ten minute time period.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
So has the municipal Sewer service known about this for
a long time?
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yeah, Yeah, it's always fun. It's a great event and
it's so nice to have it back. It's down in
q on this park, which is great. There's a skate
park right nearby. There's pick a ball courts, so the
park itself is great, but they set it up very
very nicely for a whole family to go down there
and enjoy the day.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Yeah. Sheboygan has so many beautiful parks right along the
lake front, but Kawanas is a beautiful one that's a
little further in. It's by the Sheboygan River and it's
actually right close to where highways twenty three, twenty eight
and forty two all convene and come together. So it
is all the stand roads point you towards it. Yes,
it does so delicious. Broughts live music, a lot of
fun at broad Days, which is that's the Sheboygan tradition.
(04:25):
I'm glad that it's back.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
It is it is. I mean we're the broatwers cap
of the world, so you have to have a festival
and that's great. I mean you can definitely get your
fill of brought some music and fund that whole day
and it's it's great to have it back.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
And some years with the broad Eating contest, I mean
ESPN has been there before, televis.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Oh yes, yeah, there's there's it's a competition. I mean
people travel, you know, these these big name people that
like to do food eating competitions come here for it.
So it's it's great. It's always fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
And you know, going to the water. Sheboygan's definitely on
the radar of surfers all over the world. It's long
been known for that, but boy for boating and boat racing.
This is a really cool event that's coming up again.
We've talked about it in the past. But the Mercury
Racing Midwest Challenge is coming back the weekend of August
eighth through the tenth, and that is something that's really
(05:14):
going to be a spectacle on the lake.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
It is, it's fantastic. This is their third year. Mercury
Racing is back to being the lead sponsor for it.
It's high speed boat races and this year they are
bringing in jet ski racing, which is new, so it's
a little bit more up close you can see it.
So we're really excited to see what that's about. I mean,
the speed course is directly right behind Blue Harbor, so
(05:39):
it's going to be very easy to see it. But
there's viewing up and down the whole shoreline during the event,
so it's a lot of fun. It's obviously right on
the waterfront. It's a great spectator sport to just watch
all day. They have races all day Saturday and Sunday.
Friday night is the fun night. Friday night is when
(05:59):
they have the big block party downtown, so they will
trailer in these boats, set them up in the city
streets and you can walk among them see how big
they are. You get to meet the race teams, there's
gonna be live music, food trucks, but it's a real
interactive way to get involved and see these boats there
(06:20):
are humongous, so it's really a fun event. Yeah, it's
weird to see them up that close. It's like, oh,
these are really big, so that's really fun. And then
new this year during that event, Three Sheeps Brewing Company
and the City of Sheboygan is sponsoring something called Boats,
(06:40):
Bits and Brews, So that'll be down at King Park,
which is prime viewing for the races. But they're going
to be having live bands, brought fry, food trucks, family
friendly kids activities. So again sponsored by Three Sheeps and
the City of Sheboygan, so we're just kind of activating
the King Park area during the boat races as well.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
It's always fun to stop at Three Sheeps. Their tap
room is on North Avenue or Street. It's just north
north North Avenue, which is also a great connection over
to the lake because that's part of the Lake Michigan
Circle tour and then you driving those residential streets along
the lakefront. It is just spectacularly beautiful and even right
there every Monday in the summer, Volrath Park, I think
(07:22):
it's still a vulrath right the food truck Monday, yes.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, and that has gotten so big where they've actually
had a little bit of an overflow this year on
some of the food trucks ended up going over to
Keiwanas Park again. Okay, back with the broad day is
so that's nice they had. It's become such a huge
event that there's twenty thirty food trucks and there's just
not enough space at Volvas, so some of them decided
to move over to King Park, which is nice too.
(07:47):
But yeah, Monday nights from four until eight, that is
a packed with food trucks.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
So love just spreads all over the city. But yeah,
the lakefront with this Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge. We stopped
in there too years ago on Sunday. It was everything
was starting to wind down. But you can walk out
on that pier that goes a long way out into
the lake. Yes, and yes it's spectacular.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
It is. It is. You can walk out to the pier.
You can just walk anywhere right along the lake shore.
They have the pit area open, so even down by
DeLand Park which is the surfing area, but the marina
area and DeLand Park is you can walk through the
dry pits and see the boats as well. And then
just on the other side of the river obviously behind
(08:31):
Blue Harborn all the way along the South Beach to
King Park, it's all prime viewing. You know, it's out
Lake Michigan, so you can't not see them.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Well, that's the beautiful part. And there's there's bluffs. Sheboy
And and Milwaukee geographically are similar like that. The downtown area,
the water is right at land level, but when you
go to the to the north beach, in the South Beach,
you get up to a little bit of a bluff,
a little bit of a cliff, right, And so we
have prime viewing for a long way.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Oh yes, yes you do. And yeah, and people put
a blanket out and they'll sit there all day and
hits up some of the food trucks or broad fry
or pack a picnic and watch it and it's just
a great I mean, there's no charge. It's a free event,
so you can't beat that. And it's just a lot
of fun to be down there and catch everything live.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Yeah. King Park, the Harbor area right around where Blue
Harbor Resort is the land park, King Park South Beach,
North Beach. There's so many great viewing areas. DeLand, by
the way, you mentioned that was the surfing area. That's
where you can do a post with the Malibu of
the Midwest. There's that big thing you can get your
picture taken with. It's quite the spectacle.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Yes you can. And we just we just launched last week.
There's a brand new one, so you have to check
that out. It's a South Peer ice Cream between South
Peer and Linos Restaurant. We did one with an two
ice cream Cohens. So it's just a really fun selfie station.
It has been packed since the minute we set it up.
(10:01):
I mean people were just waiting for it to be
finished so they could climb up and take photos on
the ice cream col And well another fun interactive one.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
You're gonna have to get that one on stage trunk
tour now. So yeah, so you have that one, the
Oldwest one downtown and for out in Sheboygan County too
where Johnsonville is where their marketplace is. You have the
big one that says brought with the four big blank. Yes,
there's a lot of yes must instagrammable spots across Sheboygen.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Absolutely, yes, there is.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Mercy Well and it's funny. Actually, two summers ago, I
was surfing in the waters of Lake Michigan at Sheboygan
for the show, and I got to tell you, man,
it is really cool going to EOS Surf Shop and
then checking out the waves down there and the waves
these boats are going to be kicking up at the
Midwest Challenge. That's going to be something too.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Oh yes, yeah, it's fun. It's gonna be an an
interesting couple of weeks. I mean there's there's people coming
from all over for this, so you know, we love it.
We love the the environment and everybody's out and about
and you know, enjoying the beautiful outdoor recreation we have
here in Chiboygan, So you know, we love it. And
having these kind of events just really brings people here
for the first time or you know, for years to
(11:10):
come that keep coming back for these events and just
to experience the waterfront.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Very vibrant really all year round, but the summer it's
especially crazy cool. In Sheboygan up and down a street
to that main downtown drag. You know, there's a lot
of apartments now that they've built just to the east,
and I'm like, boy, these people have access to so
much cool stuff all the time.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Yes they do, Yes, they do. Yeah. We have the
Lovett Amp Concert series going on and Thursday nights through
summer yet, and that always is a great activity. I
mean there's something really every day of the week that
is going on here, whether the events or just you know,
locals out having fun.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yeah. The Wild Center for the Performing Arts always has stuff.
The Children Museum is right down there, a lot of
great restaurants, some good marketplace areas. It's just a lot
of fun to go up and down Eighth and go
out into the Harbor area and checking out all summer long,
any day of the week. And visit Sheboygan dot com.
Your events list is huge. There are so many options
(12:08):
to check out, over and above the three or four
we've talked about here.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Oh yes, yes, definitely check that out.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Yeah, visit sheboygan dot com. Never a dull moment and
a lot of fun between brats, books, and boats. It's
going to be a busy start to the August. I
just made that up. Yes it is, but fitting.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
It is well, Shelley, you have my permission to use it.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Okay, I will.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Do that, all right. Thanks for joining me on the
Stage Drunk Tour podcast today.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
