Speaker 2 (00:29):
Trips to the right, Mark's to the right. Now the
most of the tight end as a fullback shotgun snap
hand off, Mars period of.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
The backfield, Tomory House. Well, now let it into the house. Well,
I tell you what, man, I think.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
There was a big giant excel of air in this
stadium on a couple of occasions tonight, and that was
one of two. The second was on the fourth down
play that won the game for Washington, which we will
get to in a matter of minutes. But welcome back
to inside Husky Stadium, everybody, Dave Softi, Mario Bailey, Greg Lewis.
Husky Talk Postgame powered by your local Northwest Chevy Dealers
(01:13):
is on the air. After you dub won a game
against USC We're how about this hallelujah, boys, we were
outgained and won a football game. Finally. Washington had lost
four previous games this year, had outgained their opponent in
every single one, and maybe this is what it took.
Maybe it took you Dub, being outgained guys by their
(01:35):
opponent tonight to get this victory twenty six to twenty
one over USC. The Huskies go to five and four.
They are one game away from bowl eligibility, while USC
drops to four and five, and for the fifth time
this year, by the way, USC has blown a fourth
quarter lead. We talked about this in the pregame show,
Mario that USC, in the back of their minds new
(01:57):
they were not able to close these things out, and
the same thing happened again tonight for the Trojans. It
was almost disaster though for you Dub, because with a
buck forty eight left to go in the fourth quarter,
Washington was facing third and one from their own forty
two yard line. There's a timeout. They come out of
the timeout and they have twelve men on the field
and they get busted by the officials for an illegal
(02:19):
substitution call. They end up having to punt the ball
away after a one yard loss on third and six
from their own thirty seven, and USC drives all the
way to the UDUB fourteen when Lance holtsklaw number ten,
which we think it may have been his first snap
of the game, by the way, absolutely whipping right tackle
(02:39):
Mason Murphy for USC, getting in Miller Moss's face, forcing
an air and throw, and the Huskies hang on to
win the game. So let's just go round the room
get some thoughts. Mario over start with you, UDUB defense.
I said it on Twitter very two thousand and five
Seahawks Ish. I know that's going back a few decades now,
but the but don't break defense was on display tonight
(03:02):
for UB's defense.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
No doubt.
Speaker 5 (03:03):
The first half, I thought the defense played tremendous. I
thought they looked like a team that didn't care if
this team was the passing team that we've been waiting
to see. Like they were on those receivers, they were
on the quarterback. He looked average at the first half.
Second half defense, Greg talked about it, like our defensive
line looked like they struggled. Those guys came out and
ran the ball at will on us. They're running back
(03:25):
at over one hundred yards in the second half. Long, yep,
But the last two see I've seen their Michigan game
and I seen their game against Penn State.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
They choked.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
They ran the ball eight straight times and just happened
to pass on a second down. It probably cost them
the first time, and then the second time. We stopped
them our defense for their quarterback to throw the ball
fifty times in a game and only and still have
less than three hundred yards. We got the three interceptions.
We talked about the bunches and getting the turnovers. Well,
we got three interceptions today. Even though one was right
(03:55):
before the half, it still goes down in the record
books as three interceptions our defense.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
It's just pretty good.
Speaker 6 (04:01):
Yeah, absolutely, our defense came to play the first half,
they made some crucial plays, and you know, being at
home I think was what was really needed for this team.
They feel comfortable at home, they know they've had a
lot of success here. But it's those bunches of turnovers.
Mario talked about it in pre game. They came today
and boy were they necessary. You want to talk about
(04:23):
a guy, a kid who had a fantastic football game.
I think Carson Brunner has been banged up quite a
bit this year. He seems like he's healthy. He was
flying around to day. He had ten eleven tackles. He
had part of that stop down on twelve, part of
that stopping of them on the four downs there. He
on the play before the final one. He made a
huge tackle on third down, him and another player. He
(04:47):
got the two picks. This was a great job by
our defense for most of the game. Other than those
two touchdowns drives and offensively today, guess what, guys, we
were extremely balanced. Jonah Coleman got the two when he
carries that Mario has been talking about. I think he
was close to one hundred yards in total, over one
hundred yards in total. Also, though we threw the ball
(05:07):
when we needed to, our tight ends, man, we had
some great play from our tight ends. They they played
fantastic in the football game. They made some clutch catches.
We got Denzel open on key downs and key plays.
Jiles Jackson made some key first downs. I thought, Will Rogers,
you know there was a third down. No, actually we
(05:27):
went for an on fourth down. Tight end was open.
He missed him. But other than that, I don't remember
too many misses, So I think as a whole, we
played a pretty darn good balanced football game. We ran well,
we passed well, and we played defense pretty good except
for those two drives.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Yeah, forty passes, twenty nine rushes by u Dub Jodan
Coleman twenty three for a bucko four. The twenty three,
by the way, for him as a career high. Previous
was twenty two and the overtime losch to USC a
year ago. So not just a Husky high but also
a career high for Jonah Coleman. And there's just all
kinds of different situations we can go back and talk about.
(06:04):
I mean, first of all, Mario, you said it. They
were just completely gashing Udub's defense on the grind on
the second half, and we're all sitting here up in
the booth thinking, oh my god, here we go again. Right,
this is the same story Indiana. Iowa just you know,
takes over the trenches, right, Mario. And the second half,
whether it was you know, Johnson or whoever for Indiana
just pounding the ball down their throat. The Husky front
(06:25):
seven looked tired, They looked like they were getting shoved
around again by a Big ten football team. And this
was a Big ten team that obviously has been a
Pac Toal football team, And it wasn't just Marks, it
was Joiner. They had to play sequence there where. I
believe they ran the ball one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight times in a row and nine of ten by
(06:46):
the way, they get the first and goal at the
ub four yard line, and like you said, second in
goal for some reason, inexplicably they drop back. They throw
the ball to the back of the end zone and
it's third and goal from the two. So there's a
feeling I think that if USC had just stuck with
the run for four consecutive plays from the four yard line,
maybe they score. If this is a USC post game show,
(07:07):
that's the kind of stuff we're talking about.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Witho question, that was the biggest mistake he could have made.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
He should have ran it for the ninth straight time,
and they could have just ran it for all four
of those down There's no way they should have passed
the ball. They were gashing us all the way from
the fifty yard line in with eight straight runs, why
wouldn't you go for another one.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
I think they were trying to be a little you know, cute,
where you outsmart your opponent. We've been gashing to run, run, run,
so they're gonna, you know, dig their heels in, they're
gonna all crowd the line of scrimmage and we're gonna
catch him. Well, Riley might have outthought himself on that
particular play. I think, you know, the thing that USC
does well in their run game we talked about a
(07:45):
free game, is that guard tackle or in some cases
guard tight end pool and the quarter of the running
back gets behind those guys. They were having success down
after down after down. Yeah, there were times where we
scrunched in too much and they bounced and got around.
There were times where we tried to keep leverage outside
and they turned it up and got yards and we
just were on our heels. Two straight drives, they pushed
(08:07):
it down the field. They kind of bullied us a
little bit. But I'll say this when it mattered when
it counted the most. In that drive where they were
first and goal in the four, this team, for the
second or third time this year, showed some heart, showed
some wanting to show some determination, and they would not
allow USC to get the ball into the end zone.
(08:29):
So I'm really proud of these kids. I think today
again back to who I think should clearly be the
player of the game. Brunner looked healthy, he looked fit.
It wasn't just in the you know, the interceptions, but
he was making players all over the field. He batted
down a couple of passes. He made some crucial tackles,
he was hitting guys. He was really really out there today,
(08:51):
acting like a player who was under some you know,
felt desperate. You know, this is a must win for us,
and that's what you want your fifth year or in
these six of the eighth year captain, final season type
of guys to be able to do. He's a great leader,
and today exemplified that, not just with whatever he's saying,
but least play was great.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Well, you start to think about, you know, all the
great legacy names right in the history of Husky football,
and the name Bruner is obviously on that list. I mean,
you guys played with his dad forgot such you did?
You did not, but Mario did. He was a freshman
when you were on that rose ball team, right champions.
But yeah, Carson Brunner had twelve tackles, he had two picks,
and he had two pass breakups today, including one on
(09:34):
the very first drive of the game. And that really
is the story guys of you know, really the game,
because the first three drives of the game US He's
got the ball the fifty yard line after a long return.
They go three plays three yards and they end up
punting second drive there at the UW thirty seven. The
very first play, Carson Bruner picks off a pass. Third
drive from the USC forty and they end up missing
(09:54):
a field goal. Second to last drive they get to
the Husky four, they get zero last drive, second and
four from the fourteen and they get nothing this game though,
And it's funny how this stuff works if one thing
goes differently and USC ends up scoring and they win
this game. The illegal substitution that was called on Washington
where a buck forty eight left to go, I mean,
(10:15):
it just still blows my mind, Like I'm sitting here
knowing that Washington won the game, but it almost scares
the hell out of me thinking there's an all thirty
universe out there, Greg where they lose the game partially
because of an illegal subst substitution call. And thank god
they won the game, and thank god you could learn
that lesson in a win. Can you imagine if Washington
(10:37):
had lost this game because they go from third to
one from the forty two to third and six from
the thirty seven, and USC gets the ball back and
they end up winning. What's the conversation like right.
Speaker 6 (10:49):
Now, Well, is a brutal conversation that I would think
would be warnted and worth having, because you can't put
your team in a situation like that, and to me
that on the staff. Okay, I'm not gonna pinpoint any
one particular coach or something like that, but when you
have a time out, your figure, here's what we're gonna do.
We're gonna come out, we're gonna do this. You have
(11:10):
the guys on the field in the huddle that you're
gonna run that play with, and to have an extra
guy in there, and then you still have an opportunity
with enough time to call a time out. If you
call a time out, you can take that guy off
and no no harm, no foul, which would have been
warned to lose time out for that. So if you
don't make if you if they win the game, and
(11:30):
that's part of the story, I think there'd be a
lot of people wanting to understand.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Why the coaching staff let that happen. So do we
know who called time out? Was that any USC timeout
they were coming out of. I'm pretty sure it was
a YEAH time because you can't call consecutive timeouts anymore
in college football, right, So if that was, Huskies could
have correct. So as long as that was the USC timeout,
I believe the Huskies would have been okay. But I mean,
it just it just had disaster written all over it.
I mean, I don't know what you guys are thinking,
(11:56):
but when they get to the fourteen yard line, you know,
third and four from the fourteen, Price Sock has that
pass break up here in the corner that if you
go and watch the play again, I'm really curious to
know on Tuesday what you guys think of that play
because it looked like one of those fifty to fifty
calls Mario that could have been potentially a pass interference
call on Price Sock. And then on fourth and four,
(12:16):
I think if if Miller Moss just turns and floats
a ball to Marx on that little out route, he's
got Carson Bruner to beat to the corner and maybe
even for a first down if he commits to number
four right away, but he doesn't, and Lan tolskaal Holtzklaw
just completely spanks Mason Murphy, the right tackle for USC,
and he ends up pulling him down and forcing the
(12:39):
air and throw. So when it's third and four from
the fourteen to fourth and four from the fourteen to
hell even second and four from the fourteen yard line,
we're all sick to our stomach because of the illegal
substitution call.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
Yeah, I think it's one of those things where the
coach was gonna have and you put that on the
head coach, and he's the offensive coordinator, so you've put
that on the head coach. If that call, if we
lose this game, Oh, we're gonna be talking about that
for the rest of his tenure at the University of
Washington because that could have easily cost us a bowl
game and a lot more So, we're fortunate that we
(13:09):
came out of it. In the defense, we were fortunate
that these guys just had to pass the ball. They
had more time and they had to rent out the
clock so much in that previous drive. All they could
do is pass the ball, and that bodes well for
our defense.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Greg, what do we think of the decision? Thirteen forty
eight to go. You get the touchdown to Keith Reynolds
and they go for two and then throw a fade
route to the corner to Denzel Boston.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
Well, you definitely go for two in that situation. That's
you know, when you have your sheet of win to
go for two, that's the time because now you put
it up, they got to get a touchdown and an
extra point. So great for making that call before the
play snap, Mario Bailey looked at me. He said, we're
running the fade to Dizzel Boston up in the corner.
And yeah, they've been you know, really vanilla and called
(13:53):
some of the very same things in these situations. You guys,
everybody out there who's listening right now, those where I
I believe that's when you bring the young kid in
and quarterback.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah, he's got to get three yards.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
You run the red zone or a conservative RPO type
of play that puts his legs in the action, that
gives Joden Covian an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
And if it's an RPO.
Speaker 6 (14:16):
Then you can hit a Dinzel Boston on something other
than that fade to the corner. So I think you know,
having him and even today he made some good plays.
I saw, you know, us have Demond Williams in inside
that fifteen yard line. YEP, I for one.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Think that is really his opportunity to sign. Well, I
want to just give a little bit of a shout
out to DeMont Williams because he came in on third
and seven from the USC thirty with about seven minutes
to go in the game Washington that at that point
was leading twenty to fourteen. They brought him in on
third and seven and he took a shot right up
(14:52):
the gut from a linebacker named Sam Green who's six
foot one, two hundred and fifty five pounds. De Mont
Williams has given almost seventy pounds to this guy, and
he just took a smack from this guy and then
pop right back up.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
Man, that's what he did that for. Greg.
Speaker 5 (15:07):
He did that for you, and you guys are worried
about this kid playing, so he better got up after
play go ahead.
Speaker 6 (15:14):
Well, I was just gonna say him taking one of
those Mario I think is okay. But I think if
you put in a situation where you got to take
six or seven of those, dude in the game, that
it might be a different story. I'm pad you're healthy
and nothing came out of that. But yeah, he did
take a good pop and got up.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Well, let's do this. Let's get some of your phone
calls two eight, six, ninety five, nine, nine to five.
Oh uh, what do you make of what you guys
saw today? Concerns about the team moving forward? Just happy
to get the win. I mean for me, guys, it
just kind of feels like, hey, just survive in advance.
You got to get that sixth win. At this point
of the year, I don't give a damn how they
do it. Just get it done, get to the bowl,
win or Bowl eligibility, get your extra practices, and let's
(15:52):
just move on and start kicking this thing into high
gear over the offseason. But for now, it was ugly
at times. You doub blows a lead, us he takes
over in the fourth quarter, they have a shot on
two different occasions to score, and the defense holds strong,
but the illegal substitution call had everybody on edge for
what seemed like forever in the stadium tonight. So your
(16:12):
thoughts on this coming up next. Udub is now won
nineteen consecutive games at Husky Stadium. Nobody has ever seen
this before. Okay, nobody unless you're one hundred and seven
years old, because that's the last time it happens. So
it's crazy. How all of us, as Husky fans can
I'll sit here and say we are now officially seeing
something that we have never collectively seen in our lifetime,
(16:33):
and that's you Dub win nineteen games in a row
at Husky Stadium. They'll go for twenty and thirteen days
from now against UCLA on a Friday night. We'll come
back in some of your phone calls. Husky Talk post

All right, doc fans, We're back here inside Husky Stadium,
Washington gets it done tonight against USC. At times it
wasn't pretty, but hey, at this point of the year,
I think I speak for everybody who gives a damn.
Just get the wins and find yourselves with win number
six at some point and get yourself to postseason play

phone lines. John is in North Seattle. John, how are
you Palat's going on?
Speaker 4 (17:56):
I'm doing great?
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Talk to us about the uh twelve bit on the field.
Speaker 6 (18:02):
But before then, on the last drive, USC had, Yes,
there was a timeout call they either right now, that's
to help our club.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Did you guys get any explanation.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
No, we we noticed that right away as well that
they didn't take it off the board. I'm trying to
figure out what happened. Uh, there was a timeout. There
was a stopping in play, guys when USC had the
ball near the four yard line. I think it may
have been after the past, John, if I remember correctly,
on second and goal, Uh, there was a stoppage in play.
I know TV went to a break and there was
(18:34):
never a timeout taking off the board, and USC actually
on the next Husky drive got all three timeouts and
they used every single one of them. So John, let's uh,
let's dig into that a little bit. We'll try to
find out what happened there. Pal all right, he's gone,
because that was If it turns out that USC got
a fourth timeout, obviously that's a procedural issue that's got
(18:56):
to be corrected by the officials. But I I saw
the play stop and I don't have any idea why
it was stopped, and if it was USC calling a timeout,
why USC was not charged for a timeout. So we'll
get to the bottom of that there. I'll make some
phone calls. Greg's got people in high places, even call two,
and we'll figure it out. All right, let's go to
Who's next. Rusty's in Redman, Hello, Rusty, you're on the air.
How are you? Man? Hey?
Speaker 7 (19:18):
Guys, how you doing doing great? I mean, you guys
hit on a lot of it. When I think about
this game, it hit on every prototypical thing that I
can think of about the twenty twenty four Huskies. You
have big guards giving up on special teams early, a
massive fourth down stop, and the kicker being what we
were all talking about, that killer penalty after timeout, which
(19:38):
is another huge brain part by the coaching staff. But
you got to think, you know, it's guys like Cardson
Bruner giving underlenting effort that it's a difference. Lance tol Squad,
I think you mentioned Softy maybe his first nap of
the whole game, right, I'm into making that play, which
you know I turned to Steve Belichick making the right
substitution at the right time for a guy that can
(19:58):
rush the passer. So, you know, really writing the book
on what the twenty twenty four Huskies had been to
this point.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
But it can't.
Speaker 7 (20:06):
Help but feel great for guys like Carson and for
US fans who deserve it after all those heart palpitations
along the way.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Yeah, no doubt. I mean, guys, let's just talk about
that for a second, because I think typically and I
appreciate the car rusty. Over the course of Husky football history,
getting to a bowl game is nothing that is typically
celebrated by Husky Nation. There's one year where it was
celebrated and that was twenty ten, when two years earlier
we know what happened and to get back to some
(20:33):
relevancy and playing you know, Texas, you know obviously, or
excuse me, Nebraska and the Holiday Bowl and getting that
seventh win that meant something. Then what about this year
going from a brand new coaching staff, fifty plus new players,
new conference, everything brand new and finding a way to
get to the postseason. Does it resonate maybe a little
(20:54):
bit more this year given the context.
Speaker 6 (20:56):
Yeah, I think, you know, based on what happened last
sheer Husky Nation is probably elevated their expectations, which all
okay with that. You know, we're fans and we want
to see our team do well, and everybody you know
got all behind the dogs and followed them all the
way to the national championship run, and so their expectations
has been elevated a little bit. But the reality of
(21:17):
where we are as a program right now, with all
new coaches, all the new players, and this whole change
and ability of players to leave kind of in a
weird times where it makes it hard for you to
replace those guys because time, and the windows are short,
and when you can sign people, when people can go
into portal and all of that.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
This coach, this coaching staff.
Speaker 6 (21:40):
Did not have a lot of time to rebuild this
team the way you traditionally would, right, And so coming
into this season, we're not a team who's just going
to reload year after year after year. We're not there.
Hopefully there's a point in time somewhere where we can
get there, but what does that take. It takes having
a coach that's going to be there seven to ten,
thirteen years in order to accomplish that type of feat.
(22:03):
So I think who we are as a team or
a program that has had some good runs, we can't
be successful here. We have a lot to offer kids,
and certainly you know success is right there. We got
to National Chip, but we're not going to just automatically reload.
And when you lose fifty some of our kids, it's
tough to do that.
Speaker 5 (22:22):
It's just hard if you look at the last few years,
just what our team has done in the last two
seasons prior to this. But Greg is right, we have
so many new players, over fifty new players, no real
returning starters, maybe one returning starter. So, but what is
the bowl game if you're six and six? You know,
that's just like a consolation prize. But for the coach,
(22:43):
it's a great thing to have these guys practice a
little longer, have this team. But in reality, we don't
want just a bowl game. We want to be in
the twelve. We want to be in the playoffs. We
want to be in the thicke of things. Yeah, and
when you're looking at the bowl games now, like all
of them are before January first, Like, when is the
ball game gonna be like December twentieth?
Speaker 2 (23:02):
Who?
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Okay, Yeah, I mean you'll take what you can get.
Speaker 5 (23:06):
And we have a building excuse with all the new
players and all the situation and losing the coaches and everything,
But that's not.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
What we're trying to strive for here at the University
of Washington.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
No, absolutely, that's why I ask. I mean typically, I look,
I've been doing this long enough. Now I know what
I bring this up on the year, I'm gonna get
barbecued for it. Right, Okay, you know that's not the goal.
I understand that nobody knows that more than me. I
know six and six is not going to fire anybody
up long term. But is there any context here where
you can say, hey, given the circumstances, if they can
(23:38):
get to a bowl game, that will be looked at
a success as a success for this team and this
team only. As a coach.
Speaker 6 (23:45):
When you come in, you take a job, you know
there's gonna be some challenges and some obstacles. What you're
trying to do, though, is create a pathway and a
blueprint to get to that level of success that you
want to have. To me, the first run in that
is getting to a bowl game this year. Gosh, softie,
what are you get into a bowl game? You selling you?
(24:07):
You're doing rookie stuff.
Speaker 5 (24:11):
You got you guys because you talk too much mess.
Speaker 6 (24:15):
But you want to you want to take that that
first step.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
To me, this is a step to getting to that success.
Having a bowl you.
Speaker 6 (24:22):
Know, opportunity to get more playing time for your players,
to hopefully give guys like Demand Williams and your young
tight ends, who, by the way, another group who had
a fantastic, fantastic game today, more practices, more opportunities to
play in a game. I think you'll see in that
bowl game a lot of young kids on the offensive
(24:42):
line maybe who get a chance to sort of set
the tone for going in the spring ball seeing where
they are, knowing what they need to improve on. The
coach is seeing that, and you know it's something to
recruit around. When you're out on the road and you're
bringing kids to bowl practices, you know, those are types
of things that you want to build into to get
into that path of success where you can end up
(25:03):
being in the playoffs. So to me, it's a big
deal in that sense. They really are trying to build
on some things that have success.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Yeah, and they made some changes to their offensive line tonight.
Obviously we saw Kalita start at left tackle. We saw
Landon Hatchet at right guard a lot in this game, obviously.
And I'm just kind of going through guys the two
deeps right now, just for a few seconds, and all
the guys I just highlighted right there in yellow are
guys that can come back next year. What do you see?
(25:32):
You see a lot of yellow. There's a lot of
yellow on that list, No, no, no question. I mean
there's gonna be some poachers coming out there, especially for
number two right, which might be part of the reason
why the guy's getting some playing time. But Kimori House
and Lance Holdskla, who both had those big plays on
fourth down on the last two drives for the UNPS defense,
both are back next season. We're gonna break more of
(25:54):
your phone calls, reactions, and more insight from Greg and
Mario Husky's win at twenty six to twenty one over
US see right here on ninety three three KJRFM alright,
twenty six twenty one final here in Husky Stadium, Dogs
(26:15):
Getter Dunn, Nowell Rodgers twenty five or thirty nine two
sixty two, Joan to Comb on a career high twenty
three carries, one hundred and four yards, two touchdowns, and
you know what's coming baby. Now that the game is over,
it's time for a Dicks runner. What is your go
to when you make a dis run? Deluxe and Fries,
(26:36):
cheeseburger and shakes special on an ice cream Sunday. For
seventy years, Dick's driving still serves up the best fruit
of the best price in the shortest time. Stop in
when a nine Puget Sound area Dick's Drive in locations. Today,
we found out before the game that Mario Bailey has
just simply put a cheeseburger guy, No deluxe, no special
for him. We got a bag full of Dicks cheeseburgers
(26:58):
today with specials and deluxes, and he wanted none of it.
Cheeze Burger, yellow rapper. He's a simple man with a
simple request. So how about next time out we just
go with the cheese for everybody, baby, But find our
nearest location. There's one on forty fifth right next to us,
by the way, and we may have to hit that
in the way home. Let's go the phone line, so
Husky's weren't here on ninety three to three kJ R FM.
(27:18):
Let's get to Ryan's in Texas. You're on the ear, Ryan,
how are you man? What's going on? Look?
Speaker 8 (27:24):
I want to purface this by saying that I love Jetfish.
I think he was given a raw deal and I
think he's doing a great job. My son said, like,
why are you calling the Husky Hawks man? We won,
but I got a couple of serious, serious questions. I mean,
coveman on the field, come out of time out. I mean,
it's unexcusable, but it's egregious another E word. So I
(27:48):
have three questions for you, guys, I said. The question
is is like one, who is a head coach is
calling plays? And who who is the head coaches? Like
Kirby Smart, Nick Saban, Who's win who's winning national championships?
Calling the plane? Number two? You guys were there. I'm
(28:10):
in Texas, so I need your help. There's the crowd
there where we giving the twelfth man? Number three? My
question is, look at Mario's shoes. Are they acceptable? Are
they accepted to you? And Greg and Softy? Are they acceptable?
Speaker 4 (28:24):
That's it?
Speaker 2 (28:25):
My wife?
Speaker 4 (28:26):
Yeah? Third, quick, they go ahead.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
My shoes are always more than acceptable. My shoes are
always the best shoes on here. So I can take
a picture and send it to you just to let
you well. We never have to ask how Mario's shoes
look like.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
My wife works for Brooks, and Mario's wearing a pair
of black and purple nikes. Man, so those look like
knockoffs to me, to be honest with you, Man, So
I don't know what's.
Speaker 6 (28:49):
Going on there questions about Mario's shoes.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
I don't know. I mean, apparently thinks that Mario's got
some style. Would you call? You?
Speaker 4 (28:56):
Probably posted it on the.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Oh your shoes may have posted your shoes on Twitter.
I don't know which game that was or how delirious
I was when I did that. There's a lot going
on here on the road. Sometimes we have no responsibility
for anything that we say or post. By the way,
on social media. The other questions about the play calling,
I think there's this kind of attitude that you can't
be a head coach and have success if you're calling
(29:18):
plays in college football. I mean, Steve Starkesian is obviously
calling plays at Texas, Kaitlin, I think has Nick Sheridan
now calling plays at Alabama if I'm not mistaken, and
obviously Jet Fish is calling plays here at Washington. What
do you think, I mean, do you eventually need to
give up the play calling duties to have success in
the sport?
Speaker 6 (29:37):
Well, I'm not sure that that's necessarily a maker or
break a deal breaker on having success. I think there
are more coaches that call plays that are on the
defensive side of ball that you don't really know about
because no one really makes a big deal out of
it when the head coach calls defensive plays. I'm sure
there's been some of those types of guys. Look, if
(29:57):
you're running your program, if you've had some success, feel
like you need to be the guy to make the
play calls there in that situation, you do it.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
If you come to an.
Speaker 6 (30:04):
Impass or you know that fourk in a row where
all right, we've been doing this two three years, we
haven't been able to break through. And if you feel
like at that point bringing somebody else in, that's great,
that's fine. I don't think that had anything to do
with the twelve one on the field.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (30:19):
I think though, when you do, you know, come to
situations like that, it is the coaching staff's responsibility coming
out of a timeout to make sure you have all
the guys in there that you need for that play.
There's an extra guy in there, you have to take
the accountability for that.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
Well. And then look, I mean I I guess I
just got a simple approach to this, guys. I just
feel like if if the play caller, whether it's the
head coach or the offensive coordinator, is as putting his
players in position to make plays, that's all they're supposed
to do. And if players aren't connecting, like for example,
there were I'm trying to figure out the drive here
(30:55):
where Will had a couple of plays back to back
where he had wide open players, including Denzel Boston, including
Decor the graph, and he just wasn't hitting them right.
I mean, you got a guy that's putting you in
position to make plays and they just, for whatever reason,
could not find those guys. And I think that, in
the end, is really the number one job of a
(31:15):
play caller. And I thought, well, Rodgers was okay tonight.
He wasn't sensational, but I thought he was okay tonight
against the the Trojans. Mario, how about you?
Speaker 4 (31:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (31:24):
Just average, I mean, twenty five for thirty nine and
two hundred and sixty two yards and no testdowns. He
also didn't throw an interception. I just don't think that
that's a great game. And I think he's it's better
he didn't turn the ball over, but he's not getting
the playmakers the ball. He definitely missed some throws, but
he's getting pressure too. So I'm just happy that Will
didn't turn the ball over today.
Speaker 6 (31:45):
He played good enough ust to win.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
So that's what happened today. We won.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
You want to call that a game manager, whatever, He's
had some games slightly better, he's got some games slightly worse.
We can win football games. We can, you know, go
eight and four or five or whatever. With Will Rogers,
it's just we can't make a bunch of mistakes. We
can't have twelve minute in the huddle at crunch time,
we can't have offsides or in the red zone and
(32:10):
that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
He's good enough for us to win football game. I
think it was the drive before the Carson Brunner interception
where they had a hold on for solo that made
it second and eighteen, and they had a crossing route
remember to Denzel Boston, where he had him for a
large chunk of the eighteen, if not even the entire thing,
and he missed him. So those plays, I think on
(32:31):
that drive right there, I think if there's ever a
drive in this game that Will Rogers wanted to have back,
it's that one right there. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (32:37):
Sure, and everybody misses some plays from time to time.
I think we've seen Michael Pennock's overthrow a guy or
unthrow a guy here and there. I think one thing
that is true about our quarterback, if you want to
be critical, and this is something that Mario's pointed out,
and as I watched it, I found it to be true.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
He does well.
Speaker 6 (32:56):
Just saying, you know, give you your credit here. He
does not throw the ball Will on the run when
he has to move, especially when he has to move
to his left right. He's not very accurate in those situations.
He's certainly more of a pocket passer. And so that's
where the coaching staff has to kind of adapt to
what he does well and what he doesn't do well.
And they made that, but I think they really, in essence,
(33:18):
want to play with a mobile quarterback, so they're really
dealing with the quarterbacks the complete opposite of what they
normally are comfortable with.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
I just get the feeling hearing Jetfish talk that he
can't wait to go to number two. Absolutely right, absolutely.
I mean he likes to point out how many throws
Will Rogers misses, right, and maybe he feels like, hey,
the guy's a fifth year senior. He can handle it, right.
There's other players on the team that may not be
able to handle that direct kind of criticism. I do
find it interesting, Mario, how frank he is about pinpointing
(33:50):
blame when it comes to why certain plays don't work.
I don't know if I've ever seen a coach and
maybe it's just the nil era. I got no idea
maybe this is part of paying a guy amount of
money that they're paying Will Rogers to be here on campus.
I mean, this is professional football now in a lot
of ways.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
That was going to be my exact quote.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
I said, Now, when you start paying these guys, you
don't have the I don't know what the decency not
to say anything about guys like you're just going to professionalism.
These guys are professional. They're getting paid like professionals, so
why not be able to call them out? But I
don't like the coach calls out his quarterback like that,
and I think he is looking for a reason to
get the new guy in there. But I feel like
(34:29):
a real offensive coordinator, he adjust to whatever quarterback style
he has, whatever playmakers he has, and figure out ways
to get the guys the ball. I can't remember the
guy to return the kick return, but Keith Reynolds, but
he scored a touchdown. I haven't seen Keith Renolds get
the ball too much all season long. Why is he
just now getting the ball? You get the ball to
your playmakers, and you figure out ways to make the
(34:49):
guys attributes work for you.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
I think that's kind of what the coach is doing, though,
he's figuring out who these guys are, what their skills
sets are, and he's getting the ball to them. Now
as the seasons kind of you know, unfurling. You can
only do so much in practice and see so much
in practice. So it has taken these games to figure
out who these guys are.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
And that's part of not only.
Speaker 6 (35:11):
The players being new, but the coaching staff being new
and kind of figuring these guys out.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
But I can tell you what you go back to.
Speaker 6 (35:18):
You know, saying the coach criticizing the players, and in
this new NIO era, I think you know what I've
heard the numbers of what Will is getting paid. Of
course you want to get and even in NFL you
want to. I seen guys play because of the amount
of money they're getting paid. I hear what Will Rogers
is making. I think he's making maybe slightly more this
one year in college than I made my entire NFL career.
(35:42):
So if that means you can criticize the guy, then
you can criticize.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
All Right, let's get a break. We'll come back a
couple of segments, wrapping up more of your phone calls. Next, Huskies,
weren't it over you? I see twenty six twenty one.

Al right back here on ninety three to three kJ
IRFM forty six to forty one Husky win over USC
Husky Talk post game brought to by Chevy Colorado. Whether
you're an outdoor enthusiast urban explorer, do it yourself, die hard.
There's a Colorado trim to help you do more. When
we make of the way the offensive line played today, guys,
they made some changes there at left tackle. They made
(36:37):
a change right guard with Landon Hatchet. They did rotate
a little bit more. It did not feel like there
was as much tinkering going on tonight with the offensive
line though as there was a week ago.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
I can tell you this one thing that Lincoln Riley
has never been known for is a great defensive coast
and his teams have not been great defensive teams. I
certainly thought we would need to were a few more
points than we did today in order to win. But
let's face it, we did not play against the top
Moss defense, not a great pass rush. There wasn't any
(37:08):
real pressure on the quarterback most times. There was a
time here there where they made it got a little bit,
and I was not impressed with anything about USC defensively.
So you know, from that standpoint, you know, we did
what we needed to do to get the win. But
USC will never be mistaken as a great defensive team.
Speaker 7 (37:26):
No.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
I thought that what Greg said is absolutely right. USC's
defense was horrible. They didn't get a sack, and we
backed up and threw that ball forty times this game
and they still didn't get a sack. After what's been
going on in the past few weeks, I just thought
it was USC's defense, but our offense play solid.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
Yeah. I didn't really feel like Will Rodgers was really
hit March. There was I think the one play on
first down where he kind of got crunched a little
bit and had to get rid of the football. But
I thought the protection overall for Will Rogers tonight was marvelous.
And again, I mean a different story if you're doing
that next Saturday at Penn State, right or maybe last week,
you know, correct, I mean, it's kept totally different animal.
(38:04):
But look, guys, I mean here's the thing. I mean,
you're nine games into this thing. Your defense has played
pretty damn good for the most part the entire year.
What did we say on the pregame show, You're gonna
face three of the top thirty passing offenses in college football,
and this was step number one. Yeah, and the defense
held up pretty damn good. I would say they get
certainly get a B plus. You know, for most of
(38:25):
the game, especially in their past defense. The rush defense,
especially in the second half, you know, showed some kinks.
And I think that's more related to not that these
guys aren't good players, but depth is a real thing
in college football. Okay, you're out there for a certain
number of plays. I don't know exactly how many USC
ran today. Maybe you can look that up, softy, how
many plays there? How many plays the USC run. But
(38:48):
in the second half, your defensive line, who's running around
chasing guys seventy nine almost eighty plays they had to
be out there for guys will get worn down, and
when you don't have depth, that's when you really challenge.
Your first string might be good enough to make plays,
but when you get to a second string guy who
maybe is the second string that guy now because they
had to move up from third string because of injuries,
(39:10):
now you get tested a little bit.
Speaker 6 (39:11):
And that's kind of what happened.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
Well, they just came out just I mean again, the
second half, it was just the same movie all over again.
You know what he marks, comes out four yards, fifteen yards,
fourteen yards, thirteen yards, and all of a sudden you
wake up and your fourth to nine from the thirty
seven yard line and Lemon gets behind the secondary. I
have no idea what happened there. On the touchdown, it
(39:32):
looked like Pryce Sock got beat, but there was no
safety help for him whatsoever anywhere on that field. And
on fourth and nine, you're thinking, hey, can we get
off the field. Maybe USC gets a first down, but
nobody's thinking touchdown there.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
No, you're not supposed to give up a touchdown on
fourth and nine. But they had the perfect call for
our defense. But I thought our defense played great today.
I think if you look at it, and we talked
about Lincoln Riley and his offense, and this is probably
the best passing offense that we played against all year.
D's played great today, we still didn't get any pressure,
and in the second half, as Greg alluded to, our
(40:05):
defensive line struggled and they just came and marched down
on the first few drives and actually marched down on
the third drive, but they didn't finish it. I think
our defensive backs are actually pretty good, and I think
Coach Belichick has a good handle on his defense.
Speaker 6 (40:18):
Yeah, I'm not going to be too overly critical because
on that play, we shifted into a one high safety
look and so the safety was kind of in the
middle of the hashes and on the snap, the defender
got behind the corner and that safety was about a
half a step slow. Yeah, and he had to go
a long way.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
I think here's Vincent Holmes by the way.
Speaker 6 (40:37):
He had to go a long way in order to
get there to be a factor in that play. And
when you're a one high safety look, if the guy
if you're not pre read, and what you hope is
is they've watched enough film to know in this sort
of you know, part of the field and in this alignment,
here are the plays that they typically run. So sometimes
(40:57):
your study in research before the get can help you
get there a little sooner. That wasn't the case on
that play, and by the time he tried to make
it there, it was too late. And not only like
you said, was it a first down, it was a touchdown.
So they called the right play at the right time,
gets the right defense, and our defensive guy wasn't able
to make the reed in order to get there.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
Let's get a break, we'll come back, wrap it up.
We'll give you a few scores from around the country.

(43:23):
That was Phil Steele's big play by the way today,
so good for him. How about UCLA getting a win
against Nebraska. U Cola is three and five guys on
the year. They beat Nebraska in Lincoln. Today, they got
Iowa coming to the Rose Bowl. Then they got the
Huskies and USC and Fresno. They gotta win three more
games to get to buy eligible. So you know, Deshan
(43:43):
Foster is talking about those guys down there finding a
way to figure it out.
Speaker 6 (43:47):
We got to win for them totally.
Speaker 2 (43:49):
We are must win for them. So U Cola gets
it done tonight in Lincoln over Nebraska. Oregon hammers Michigan
thirty eight to seventeen, o Iowa State, uh stops Penn
State twenty to thirteen. Indiana's now nine to zero, and
they win forty seven to ten. Elsewhere around the country,
cam Ward threw for five touchdowns today. He might be
(44:09):
the front runner now for the Heisman Trophy fifty three
thirty one over Duke Tennessee survives against Kentucky. South Carolina
upset Number ten Texas A and M today forty four
to twenty in Texas Tech upset Iowa State twenty three
to twenty two in games. Final thoughts. Huskies are five
and four after a win over USC tonight. We're going
(44:31):
to Penn State on Saturday. You like playing those guys
after a loss or it doesn't really matter.
Speaker 6 (44:35):
At this point of the year, it doesn't really matter.
Penn State has still a lot to win for and
in front of them, and they know they got to
get that one against a Hussy, so we're gonna see
their best. I'm proud of this team that they came
in here today, kept the home game win streak alive,
that they're still in line to be Bowl eligible, that
players like Carson Bruner, who were leaders and seniors, stepped
up and had big football games. So I love the Huskies,
(44:59):
you know, Monk. That's why I'm on the show. I
just think today was a step in the right direct.
Speaker 5 (45:03):
Hey, Mario, just grateful that we're still in bold contention,
looking forward to us trying to get this first big
ten road victory. I think we did a great job today.
I really believe in our defense. Our offense got a
little better today's. So I'm just looking forward to going
on the road and doing what Ohio State did in
Penn State today.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
Yep, all right, good stuff. We'll see on Tuesday at
four o'clock with the Husky Hawks, and then next Saturday
our pregame show. Let's see eight o'clock there time, five
o'clock kickoff. We'll be on the air at one o'clock
next Saturday. Locally, we're gonna be at Champs Sports Bar
by the way, the Atherton location next Friday in Penn State.
(45:42):
If anybody is heading out there for the game, we'll
tweet it out obviously, put a Facebook all that and
out stuff on the air, so don't worry about it.
But we'll be out there starting on Friday for the
show and then Saturday the pregame from Beaver Stadium. There
will be an alumni party as well by the way
from the Penn State or hotel, and we'll have more
information on that for fans that are heading out there.
But it's gonna be a good one man flying to Pittsburgh.
