(00:52):

Kings and Delta Airlines. Big thanks to our friends at

Local thirty two Hyder Construction, Zoom Care, R and R
Foundation Specialist Northwest Chevy Dealers, and of course my friends
at Darwin's Natural Pet Products and guys, how about we
go back to, first of all, what we saw on

(01:14):
Saturday and Greg, with us a game that you dubb
was leading fourteen nothing, found themselves trailing in the third
quarter seventeen to fourteen. But after Michigan took the lead,
their offense did not pass their own forty five yard line,
and the defense stepped up and just shut them down. Man,
a signature win for Jet Fish. Huskies are four and
two and heading to Iowa Saturday. Baby, Greg, what'd you

(01:36):
make of what you saw Saturday?

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Man?

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Well, what I think we saw it was a pretty
darn good football team. You know, when these guys can
get out of their own way, not make the mistakes
with the penalties, and just play consistent air football that
you know smart, these guys are pretty darn good. I
think this coaching staff did a better job than I
thought they would in assembling a football team in a

(02:01):
short period of time. And you know the old saying
football is one on the line of scrimmage. Our offensive
line and our defensive line played really good football this
past weekend. And you know, as I've gone back and
watched the tape a little bit. That's really what you
know this this football team is their team with a
good not great offensive line, with a really good defense,

(02:21):
and they played kind of like Big ten football. You know,
we've kind of become a Big ten player where we
play really good defense, we can run the ball when
we need to, and our Advanity better quarterback than most
of the team's the Big Ten. And our receiving corps.
Although it didn't have the big names, you know, the
Romo Denzas and the Jalen mcmillans, these guys are really

(02:43):
good on the outside. With Giles Jackson, with Denzel Boston.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, Mario, let's just let's go back to talk about
Saturday and a little bet I mean, Greg Scrimmage, And
I got to be honest with you, man, it was
my number one thing to keep an eye on. And
there's one play that really kind of shows you how
far this team has come. The last touchdown by Jonah
Coleman jumping over the center and d' angelo titi Ali
just takes Mason Graham, who's supposed to be one of
the better defensive players in the country and just trucks

(03:10):
them towards the Husky sideline. So what was your thought
from a wide receiver's perspective. I know you were focused
on that group as well, But what you make of
the way the guys in the trenches held up against
that Michigan front seven.

Speaker 5 (03:21):
It was just a big difference from that Washington State
game on the fourth and one, like the defense from
Washington State got a big push, but this time the
offense got a great push straight up the middle and
jumpick enough to jump over. You don't see them times
these days for guys to jump over. I think we
were in a shotgun, which was a little scary and disappointing.
I don't know why we can't just hand the ball off.

(03:44):
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't understand why they all
off and give it to our backs. But that play
is just like a big difference from three weeks prior
to Washington State. That kind of cost us the game,
But the entire game we didn't have any penalties. We
had a couple penalties we played, and the defense caused
turnovers and they stopped at Michigan team that wanted to

(04:05):
run the football. And I was a little concerned early,
but even our defensive line stopped him from running the football,
and of course we stopped him from throwing the football,
having a clean game and causing two turnovers. And I
just think the consistency of everybody on the defense and
offense got us that big three.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, they were absolutely in shotgun, by the way, for
that third and goal play, Greg that Mario's talking about,
I'm thinking the same thing. But thank god they didn't
try to run an option to the short side of
the field like.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
They did in the Apple Cup.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
But are you a little bit surprised at how how
quickly this offensive line has come together? I know Dick
and I have kind of gone back and forth, and
he was a little more positive when the season began
than I was. But look, this is fifty one new guys.
You got FCS players, you got junior Colevich players, nobody's
ever tried to do this before. And the fact that
they're handling and hanging in there, Greg in week six

(04:55):
with the Michigan front seven, I mean, at some point
you have to admit that there's lesser coaching stavas out
there that may not have been able to do with
Brendan Carroll and Jet Fish have done yeah.

Speaker 6 (05:05):
Think about it.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
Coming into the game, all we were really talking about
in the tier was the two great defensive tackles from
Michigan and how good they were upfront, and from my
eyes and perspective, the University of Washington offensive line you know,
handle those game. We didn't hear as much about them.
We heard more about them previous and prior to the

(05:26):
game than we actually did during the game. I think
it also goes to show that, you know, in recruiting,
you identify guys based on, you know, the strengths up
in that front that you see from some of the
bigger programs and some of the more established high school
and you know kids that are four and five star.

(05:48):
But I think this shows that there are times where
there are guys who go under the radar that end
up at FCS schools, that end up in lower Division
I schools, that end up in junior colleges that are
probably just as good, and given the opportunity and now
with the way the transfer portal works, those kids can
go to a Portland state, they can go to a

(06:08):
Sacramento state, They can end up in JUCO, perform well
and now transfer back to Division one and be good
football players. And I think that's what we're seeing right
now that these kids who went to lower division schools
showed that their good football players have now come into
the Big Ten. Think about that, the Big Ten that's
known for great offensive lineman, great defensive linemen, and these

(06:30):
guys are playing well in that conference. So it shows
that this transfer portal, as much as a lot of us,
you know, have a lot of angst about all the transfring.
You know, we had a linebacker transfer after the week four,
there is some good things that can come out of
the portal, primarily for the kids. So, you know, great
job Washington Husky coaching staff who went a very quick

(06:51):
time identified some really good players that.

Speaker 6 (06:54):
Can help them win.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
I'm not calling them all Americans or anything like that,
but they're helping the Washington Husky football team win games
in the Big Ten.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Well, you may have some all Big Ten players, Mario,
and you may have one at wide receiver. I mean,
Denzel Boston is number three in the Big Ten in yards,
he's number one of the Big Ten in touchdowns. This
a local guy, obviously, but the transfer Giles Jackson's number
four yards in the Big Ten. If I would have
told you before the year that Denzel Boston halfway through
would be a mid season All Big ten type wide receiver.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Would you have bought that for this kid?

Speaker 6 (07:26):
I might have.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
Bought it because just going into the season and going
in camp, like, the coaches kept saying how well he
was doing. And I talked to a few people out
there that said he was doing well. And I talked
to Jalen McMillan who thought he would be doing well
as well. I I personally didn't think that, but everybody
I talked to thought he had a great camp. It's

(07:48):
impressive to see what he's doing because I don't see
him like running too many different routes. I just see
him making plays on the ball and scoring touchdowns, And
I think how important touchdowns are. People like to dismiss
and he might not have as many receptions, but it's
about making plays, and he's making big plays when the
quarterback needs him and then the quarterback's looking for him.

(08:10):
I think Giles Jackson is the one guy that we
could get the ball in space, it for five yards
and he can turn a five yard gain into fifty.
But Denzel is making sure he makes plays all over
the field.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, Greg Denzel is fourth in the Big Ten in receptions.
I mean, he's right there in the top five, and
Giles is number three, and I don't know. I mean,
I just think when it's all said and done, if
you think about replacing the guys that you're replacing from
last year and then to be able to wake up
in Week six and say, hey, we may have two
of the top five or top six wide receivers in
an eighteen team conference, that's pretty fricking awesome, man, considering

(08:46):
everything they lost from last year.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
Well again, I think some of this alludes to the
fact that the Pac twelve, as much criticism as we've
gotten over the years, and people you know, came out
and said the Huskies going to go to a Big
ten and not be able to compete shows that we
have great athletes in this conference. I think we have
been ahead of the curve, not only at the wide

(09:08):
receiver position, but primarily at the quarterback spot. I think
we can't, you know, praise this guy Will Rogers enough
for the job that he's done this year. He's the
one distributing the football to all these wide receivers. It's
not just Denzel Boston, it's not just Charles Jackson, Jeremiah
Hunter has made some key catches. The tight ends Leotu

(09:29):
lat To have made some really good catches. So I think,
you know, the quarterback, the guy who's pulling the trigger
for this team, to me, is having a all Big
ten type of year. I know there's some great quarterbacks,
you know, throughout college football. For this kid to have
a down year last year kind of maybe lose some
of its confidence, but to step up and be as

(09:52):
effective as he has throwing the number of touchdowns only
one interception. You know, we can't say he didn't have
any anymore, but I'll take that after what six games
only having thrown one interception, So he's on pace to
throw what maybe.

Speaker 6 (10:05):
Two and a half interceptions this year.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
I don't know how you get a half, but I
think that goes to show that Will Rogers is having
an outstanding year. And so one of the best recruiting
jobs this coaching staff may have done was convincing him
to stay when he had the opportunity. Disliked so many
guys I think you know forty of them who transferred
out last year. This guy stuck around, and I think
that's the best job the coach did recruiting.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah, lay out to a lot too places for the Colts.
This brother plays for us in collect But that won't
be the first time or the last time you'll make
that mistake. And I guarantee I'll do the same damn
thing at least two or three times myself. But Greg Lewis,
Mario Bailey, Husky Hanks on a Tuesday Night injury update
brought to you by zoom Care. Beyond Better Healthcare support
comes from zoom Care looking for a better healthcare experience.

(10:51):
Zoom Care as twenty neighborhood healthcare clinics throughout the Puget
Sound offering urgent, emergency and primary care and an appointments
available same our next day, no more waiting for weeks
to get there. You need hit his zoom Care check
him out at zoomcare dot com. So doesn't sell that
Quintin Moore is going to play again. He'll be out
for this game against Iowa. They've got a tight end
because they always do a name Leshee on the opposite

(11:11):
side that we can talk about later. Zach Durfie, It
sounds like he's pretty banged up man coming out of
that game on Saturday, so that'll be another game time
decision for you, dub. But Mario, I want to go
back to what Greg was talking about with Will Rodgers
because we mentioned those wide receivers and where they rank
in the Big Ten. Will Rodgers is number two in
the Big Ten in passing efficiency. He's number two in

(11:33):
the Big Ten and touchdowns, and he's number two in
the Big Ten in passing yards. He's also number eleven
in the country overall in passing efficiency, three spots ahead
of Dylan Gabriel of the Oregon Ducks. So everybody thought
was the preseason Heisman candidate. So are you are you
surprised by anything you're seeing from Will Rogers or did
you expect all this from him?

Speaker 5 (11:54):
I can't say I expected it, but I did see
him play will his first few years under coach Leach,
and I thought he was we had a good gun slinger.
I don't look at him right now as a gunslinger,
but I look at him right now as a consistent
quarterback that's starting to make even more plays. Seventy three
percent completion percent is twelve touchdowns, one interception. That's phenomenal.

(12:18):
That's taking care of the football. That's throwing some touchdowns.
That's getting some yards. I was most impressed with last
week of him getting the tight end the ball six times.
I felt like he really hadn't got the tight end
the ball in the previous games, but it felt like
he threw it around to everybody and got everybody involved.
I think when a quarterback can do that, that's great.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Yeah, well, Greg, let's talk about the way they responded
to that interception.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
You mentioned that that Will Rodgers had his.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
First pick of the year, going to COLLECTI lot too
over the middle, But then five plays later the defense
gets the ball back, and then four plays later the
Huskies score to make it a twenty four to seventeen game.
Jed Fish talked on Monday about that that fourth quarter
being maybe the best complimentary quarter of football they've played.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
All year long. How nervous were you, honestly tied at
seventeen when Will Rogers threw that interception and the Wolverines
took over a thrown nineteen yard line within ten minutes
to go on a tie game.

Speaker 4 (13:16):
Well, you know, the game had kind of got us
excited early on, and I'll admit I was the first
one when we went up fourteen to nothing to start
believing that we might run away with the thing. But
Michigan did what they do. You know, they stayed consistent,
they kept running the football, they didn't get outside of
their character, and they gradually got back.

Speaker 6 (13:36):
Into the football game. But that's college football.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
You know, there's always going to be an opportunity for
the other team to get back in the game. But
what I was impressed with is that when they did
come not only get back in the game, but take
the lead, the Huskies didn't panic and they didn't get
outside of themselves. And this is an opportunity for them
to really step up on the defensive side of the ball,
because we know, we talked about the pregame Michigan was

(14:02):
going to once they got the lead, try to sit
on that thing and run the ball into the ground.
Our defensive front that was banged up. You mentioned Jack
Durfy maybe not being able to play this next week.

Speaker 6 (14:12):
He's out.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
You know, you have jay Von Parker who's out. But
the guys who were in there, you know, continue to
be solid against the run, get Michigan off the field.
And then the two big turnovers. We had been talking
about this quite a bit during the postgame in pregame
shows some previous games where when the Husky is gonna
start getting some turnovers, Well, the big, the big interception

(14:35):
and the big fumble recover came and allowed us to
get back. So I think we got to start talking
about this defense. You know, I think it was the
Miami Dolphins or who was it who in the NFL
back in the day had the no name defense, But
I think that might be the name for this defense.
The individual parts aren't necessarily superstars, but as a team

(14:56):
and as a collective, this defensive line has kind of
gotten solidified. We're on first and second down, they're keeping
the team out of third shorts. I mean, you go
back to the Rutgers game. Even though they converted some
third downs, they still kept them in third medium or
third and long. And now our defensive backs, we've identified
as one of the better parts of this defense, have
an opportunity to make some plays because they're putting teams

(15:18):
in third and long. Michigan had to throw the ball
to kind of get out of their comfort zone once
we took deleting Bam interception to preserve the football game.
So I think we got to start talking about this
defense a little more, maybe not the individual players, but
the defense as a whole.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
Well, Mario, let's do that because we sat here last year,
the three of us, Greg Lewis, Dave Softiemler, Mario Bailey,
the Hosky Hawks, and Mario I think was as tough
on the Husky defense as anybody, and rightfully so. I mean,
there were times last year where they were ranked in
the eighties and nineties, if not lower, in most major categories,
and really stepped up when they had to against Oregon

(15:54):
in Vegas, Texas, obviously in New Orleans with that great
play by Elijah Jackson. But there was never a time,
Mario last year where the Husky defense was number three
in the nation and pass defense, number fifteen in the
country in run defense, and number eight in the country
in total defense. And we talked about this, have been
on the postgame show on Saturday, that maybe some of

(16:15):
that is because of the opponents they've been playing. I mean,
I don't know if I've ever seen worse back to
back passing offenses at Northwestern and Michigan roll through Husky
Stadium than what I've seen in the last two games
in Seattle.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
So some of this might be the opponent.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
But there's no doubt that Steve Belichick and company deserve
a little bit of a pat on the took us
for what they've done with these with these brand new players.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
They definitely deserve a pat on the tookis as you say,
if you can stop three teams from scoring touchdowns in
the entire game, I don't care what the schedule looks
like or who you're playing, that's a big accomplishment. You
were six games in. So I don't think you can't
say that this defense is They are playing great defense.

(17:02):
Washington State I think scored the most, but they're playing
consistent defense. Their pass defense is great, and it's making
teams not want to throw the ball. Like we can
keep saying like we've had these bad quarterbacks, but will
you say that three games from now if they don't.
So they stop somebody from scoring a touchdown and this
past defense continues. They've been consistent all year. They've kept

(17:24):
us in every game. They're actually the opposite of what
our defense has been the last few years. Our offense
kept us in the game and our defense made a
few plays at the end of the game. Our defense
is consistent. I think coach Belijack Pelichick is doing a
wonderful job and I'm looking forward to see us. We
need to keep that consistency on the road, though. On
the road is the big challenge, as we've seen what

(17:45):
happen on the landscape of college football last week.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Yeah, and Greg tied for fifty seventh in sacks, which
is not great, but it's not terrible either. Obviously, it's
top half in the middle. Yeah, yeah, top half of
college football. I mean, you've got thirteen sacks on the
years here on pace for twenty six as of right now,
and that's where the defensive line that has been banged up.
But what are you seeing from this scheme? Right I mean,

(18:10):
obviously they've made changes to the scheme. We know we
saw Bill Belichick on the sideline before the game with Michigan.
I mean we're certain that he is, you know, obviously
relaying some thoughts and wisdom to his son and then
obviously to the coaching staff and Jet Fishman, what are
you seeing from this defensive coordinator?

Speaker 3 (18:26):
Man, that's kind of impressed you.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
Well, I think they're doing it a little bit differently
than we've seen in the last several years. But I
think some of that now that I, you know, really
have delved into a little bit, is dictated by what
conference we're in. You know, in the Pac twelve, they
throw the ball around quite a lot, and our defensive
kind of looked like that. Two defensive linemen, two edge rushers,

(18:49):
two linebackers, and a whole bunch of defensive backs. What
I've saw these guys do scheme wise is ad that
third defensive lineman. Instead of having the two edge rush
guys on first and second down, they're actually playing with
void to nowfie at one of those defensive ends who's
more of a d lineman than he is a smaller
rush type of guy. He's more of a run stopper.

(19:11):
So they're doing that. Then at the linebacker spot in
a lot of plays kind of to take away that
off tackle run, they're moving to Patala kind of to
the outside and not having him, you know, in the
middle of the defense along with Carson Bruner. So they're
taking away some of that edge run opportunity by having
the guy out flanked the tackles and the and the

(19:33):
tight ends. And then Carson Brunner, even with the sore arm,
and let's give him you know, the Hero.

Speaker 6 (19:39):
Award or the Wounded Warrior award.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
Is playing tough as nails in the middle of that defense,
probably along with a safety or husky type of player,
and really getting off blocks and making a lot of
tackles in that defensive front and not allowing them to
have second and two and three, second and five and
second and and he's doing that, like I said, with

(20:02):
a sore arm. And behind those guys, we're playing a
lot of man coverage so that we can get safety's
in the box a little more, have more guys around
the football. And you can only do that when your
corners are super solid in coverage. They might get beat
here and there, but they are solid enough in coverage
to keep teams from throwing against us. When we add

(20:22):
more guys in the box, add more defensive alignment, and
so you got to give them guys a pat on
the shoulder too. So a lot of its skiing, but
it's also your corners and your secondary guys being good
enough in man covers to allow you play that skime.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
All right, let's do this. We're gonna break.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
We're here on a Tuesday night post cracking Husky Hawks
until seven o'clock we'll do our Darwin's Dog at the game,
We'll do an opponent preview with Valentine Roofing, give away
fifty bucks to Zeke's Pizza, and look ahead to another
big time, Big ten.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
Slog with the Iowa haw guys on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
And Greg, you think you're tired now, pregame at five
am Baby on Saturday from Kinnick Stadium. At least we're
going that way and getting a couple of extra hours
more with the Husky Hawks next.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Now back to the Coors Life Husky Hanks on Tuesdays,
Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey and Dave Satie Muller on your
Home for the Husky Sports Radio ninety three point three
KJR FM.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
All right, doc fans, we are back here on the
Husky Hawks. Big thanks to our friends at Frostpured Corps Life,
the Emeral Queen Casinos, Sutter Medals, and Zekes Hezza will
give away fifty bucks to Zeke's in a second. Be guys,
let's look ahead a little bit to what we're going
to see from Iowa on Saturday. And Greg, first of all,
the last time we saw Cave McNamara, you and I
were at Michigan Stadium three years ago when Michigan hammered

(21:40):
you'd ub thirty one to ten.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
This guy threw for forty four yards.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
And it didn't matter because the Wolverines ran the ball
right down our throats. And it kind of feels like
this Iowa football team wants to do the same thing
that Michigan team did.

Speaker 4 (21:52):
Well, they'd like to, but they're nowhere near as good
as that Michigan team was on the offensive side of
the ball, and Iowa's been challenged the last couple of
years with really having any dynamic plays and players and
games offensively. So this is another opportunity for our defense
to come out of this game with some really good numbers.

(22:14):
I think our defense has showed that, regardless of who's playing,
especially on that front, that we're good enough to keep
the game close to keep the other team from running
up the score, and that's just not what Iowa does.
And again, going back to the office side of the ball,
that means we don't have to score a ton of points,
make some plays get into the high twenties, and this

(22:36):
can be a football game that the Hussey is gonna
walk away with win. Now having said that, we got
to do that on the road. Whatever the distractions are
that we see on the road, the things that can
keep a team from preparing well or being ready to play,
we can allow them to take us back to the penalties,
to the mistakes, if we can play mistake free football.
As much as you know we're traveling to a tough,

(22:59):
you know, big ten, you know, rough and tumble type
of team, I don't think Iowa was dynamic enough to
run away from it. And we have that opportunity in
the fourth quarter like we did this week to win
a football game. We have the playmakers to be able
to do it. So I don't think Iowa on the
offensive side of the ball is good enough to really
take control of this game. If we can again stay

(23:19):
out of our own way, this is another opportunity for
the Huskies to come away with another Big ten win.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
Yeah, Mario, listen to the Iowa football team that's ninetieth
in the country in total offense. Said, you know, some
people just find this kind of football kind of boring, right,
I mean, it's just not like it was in the
Pac twelve or teams are scoring forty five fifty points
a game.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
I mean, as a wide receiver. I mean, like, I
just imagine you're.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
Being recruited at a Franklin high school way back in
the eighties, and why the hell the Mario Bailey would
even consider going to a place like Iowa, or even
a Michigan for that matter.

Speaker 5 (23:51):
I mean, if that's the case, I shouldn't have considered
going to Washington. Our offense was bland and horrible. We
were just throwing the ball, excuse me, running the ball
and then throwing on third down. So thank god for
coach Gilberson coming and changing that around. But this Iowa team,
I think is similar to Michigan playing last week. I
think the Caleb Johnson kidd is one of the best

(24:12):
backs that we faced all year. But I think if
we go into it like we went into last week
and we played mistake free football and caught some turnovers,
we win this game again. But that's a hard task.
On the road. We seem to make well, we've only
been on the road really one time, but we make
a lot of mistakes. We're not getting any turnovers, and

(24:34):
you can't do that, especially on the road. You have
to play clean football. If we could stop their run.
I like Kade, but he's not going to throw the ball.
It's going to be another quarterback that we talk about
can't throw the ball on us. And I think our
defensive backs are probably one of our best units on
our team as well.

Speaker 2 (24:52):
Yeah, you just can't lose to a quarterback like that
unless you're just completely pathetic when it comes to stopping
the run, which that obviously Husky football team was a
few years ago.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
Under Jimmy Lake.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
But Mario, go back to the nineteen ninety Rose Bowl,
the ninety one Rolls Bowl. Obviously Nick Bell was on
that team. I think you guys are leading like thirty
three to seven at halftime and won forty six thirty four.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Greg, you were.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
Banged up for that game, right, So you didn't get
a chance to play in that Rose Bowl, are you?

Speaker 4 (25:23):
I came back after the Tier of my Aco five
weeks later and had one hundred and thirty nine yards old.

Speaker 3 (25:28):
Wow, well that was you. I thought that was Jay Berry.
I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
I apologize it says Jay Berry here in the box score.
But let me get a thought from both of you
guys on that game. Because Washington and Iowa have never
played a game in the regular season, at least not
in sixty years since nineteen sixty four, and they've only
played one game since that Rose Bowl, which is the Sumbowl.
But Mario, what do you remember about that game and
how surprised were you that Superman was able to heal

(25:52):
his knee and come back and have that kind of day.

Speaker 5 (25:54):
Well, I knew he wanted to get drafted, and I
knew he was going to do something, and he was
mad at the the Washington State game that we won
without him. So I know, Greg, he was coming back
to compete at a high level and we were going
to give him the ball twenty to twenty five times
a game. But I remember about that game is the
game was over at half and Coach James did his

(26:15):
normal and he started putting guys in and they started
making plays. They got a couple on side kicks. One
of those was my fault. They took it from me
underneath the pile. But then all of a sudden he
put all the starters back in. So when you look
at that score of that game, we should have beat
him by fifty, but Coach James took the pedal off
and that's what happened.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
Yeah, So for me, it was an opportunity to prove
that I was able to be healthy and come back.
I had tore my aco, had orthoscopic surgery after the
UCLA game. Wasn't able to play against Washington State, and frankly,
the doctors gave me a choice. They said, Greg, your
acls damaged enough for us to go in and repair

(27:00):
the whole thing.

Speaker 6 (27:01):
If we do that, you know your knee will be.

Speaker 4 (27:04):
Very stable, but you're gonna basically miss the Rose Bowl,
miss the draft, and probably be able to, you know,
resume your football career about nine months. Or we can
not prepare it, clean up the cartilage, you can rehab
and go out and try to play. And so after
being here at the University Washington for four years and
the goal was to get to a Rose Bowl and

(27:24):
that was my first opportunity, I was gonna miss that
game for nothing in the world. So what I did
was for five weeks, I rehab my knee like a madman.
I got my quad and my hand so strong that
although my ACL was torn, they held my knee together.
Not only did my quad and ham get strong, off
the whole knee together.

Speaker 6 (27:43):
I was supposed to have to wear a knee brace
that game.

Speaker 4 (27:45):
And during the preparation and practices for the Rose Bowl,
I just hated wearing that knee brace. It was clunky,
it made me feel stiff, it didn't allow me to
plant and cut like I wanted to, and I felt
like it was heavy. So what happened is is I
started get in this tape job and then wearing the
brace on top of it, which was supposed to give
me extra support. But when nobody was looking before the

(28:08):
kickoff of the Rose Bowl, I took the knee brace off.
Nobody noticed it because everybody was paying attention to the game,
and I went out there and started playing. And by
the time the doctors realized I didn't have the knee
brace on, it was third quarter. I already had one
hundred and twenty six yards. We had already blown Iowa
out and I was and I, like Mario mentioned that

(28:28):
coach James put some of the starters back in.

Speaker 5 (28:30):
At the end.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
I wasn't one of them. I had to stay on
the sideline because we had the game well in hand,
and although it looked a little different, I don't think
Iowa ever got close enough for us to be completely scared.
So we did put a couple of starters back in
on defense. But that game was over by halftime. We
were not going to after that big disappointment of losing
that UCLA game, we were not going to allow ourselves

(28:53):
to have any kind of letdown. And we jumped on
Iowa from the beginning and they didn't know what hit him.
And that was one of the most fun foot games
I've ever played in in my life. From the time
I started at eight years old to the time I
finished playing three years later having to retire because of
that same knee injury. That was the most fun football
game I've ever played.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
Yeah, that was a big deal back then to make
that game because at that point in time, I mean,
people kind of forget the context. You guys hadn't been
to a Rose Bowl in eight years, right, I mean,
Washington hadn't been there since the early eighties when they
played Iowa beat him twenty eight to nothing from the
eighty one team. So getting back there eight years later
after a bit of a hiatus when the Rose Bowl
was still a really big deal, was a big.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
Deal for a lot of people.

Speaker 2 (29:34):

Speaker 3 (30:21):
It's gonna be.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
An eleven o'clock kickoff Central time. That is obviously nine
o'clock hour time right here on ninety three to three KJRFM.
The pregame show will begin at five pm. Iowa three
and two coming off a loss to Ohio State guys
where their offense just could not do anything. And I
wonder Greg and Mario and Mario will start with you

(30:42):
because of the limitations of Iowa's offense, do you call
your plays any differently on the offensive side of the
ball with Jed Fish, do you maybe take some chances,
maybe attack their passing defense a little bit and try
to put up enough points where it makes an almost
impossible Mario for or I want to come back because
of the way they want to play the game.

Speaker 5 (31:03):
No, absolutely not. You got to go in with your
game plan of what you're thinking, and we have to
do what we've been talking about almost every week is
we have to come out to a fast start. We
definitely can't let Iowa come off and get a lead
on us on the road and being a run team,
because we'll be in a lot of trouble. Coach Fish
seems to be turning the corner. Like I said, Will

(31:24):
Rodgers is getting everybody the ball in different places, in
the right spaces. Giles getting in the right place, Jeremiah Hunter,
Denzel at Jonah. I like what we're doing our office.
We just keep the same type of game plan and
just start being more consistent, but we got to get
off to a fast start and play clean football and
not turn it over.

Speaker 3 (31:43):
Greg.

Speaker 2 (31:43):
We talked about this before the Michigan game, that Michigan's
defense was one hundred and third in the nation and
passing and how it might make sense to kind of
attack him and really force them to throw the ball,
which you did. You're up fourteen nothing and they had
no choice. And you saw how terrible Orgy was him
and all his buddies is you say, and they brought
in Jack Tuttell, who knows if he had started the game,
things may have been different. But I was not as

(32:06):
bad as Michigan. But they're sixty fifth in the country
in past defense. So you want to see that same
game plan this Saturday the saw last Saturday.

Speaker 4 (32:14):
Well, yeah, I think Mario kind of used the thing,
the term do what we do. I think coming into
this game, you have to build on the strengths that
you've shown throughout the last five or six games, which
is being a very balanced offense. You know, I know
we've we've had link talked about hopeful you know that
we can get Jonah Coleman twenty carries in the game

(32:36):
and allow him to really go off. I think going
into each game you allow what's happening on the field
to dictate how many times you give him the ball.
But we are very very balanced offense. Jonah Coleman is
a huge weapon, but so is Denzel Boston, and so
is Giles Jackson. Our tight ends, you know, Lea tu
and Decker de Graf. All of those guys have made

(32:56):
plays this year. And our quarterback is great a distributing
the ball around to different people. So I think there's
no one focus. It's be who we are and because
we've run the ball well when we needed to, and
Jolah Cooman has made some exciting, spectacular plays. Every defense
has to know where he is and that makes the run.

(33:18):
I'm sorry to play action pass and I know I
keep going to this extremely effective, we got it. I'd
love for us to kind of break down one day
how many yards and how successful we are on play
action pass. We got to be one of the better
teams in the country in doing that. So I come in,
have the game plan to be balanced, have a game
plan to spread the ball around to all our weapons

(33:39):
and allow you know, we got to come up with
a nickname for Will Rogers, you know, allow him to
distribute the ball the way he does at the high,
high completion percentage rate.

Speaker 3 (33:48):
Well, I think it's easy. He's the cowboy.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
I mean, there's no question about Will Rodgers is the cowboy,
and he's he's taking care of everybody out here. But
I'll have that number for you Saturday, Greg, for the
pre game, unless it's too early and I just can't
wake up on time to see what they do in
play action. Iowa's number fifteen in the country and run defense,
by the way, but as we said, sixty fifth in
passing defense. All right, Mario, you called it in the
pregame cam Fab was your dog of the game.

Speaker 3 (34:12):
He had to pick to kind of seal the deal.
On Saturday.

go first to the pregame show, we'll let you go
first for Saturday. Who's the Darwin's Dog of the Game
going to.

Speaker 4 (34:33):
Be I'm gonna go back to the player who at
the beginning of the year was my favorite guy. I
think he's for whatever reason, I just have a feeling
he's going to have a breakout where he's going to
have some huge, huge runs. And I said Joanah Coleman.
I think Joonah Coleman will have an excellent football game
on the road, and this will be his time to
really get that hundred plus yards.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
That'd be impressive to do that against Iowa's defense. Mario,
how about you, who's your guy for Saturday?

Speaker 3 (34:58):
Here?

Speaker 5 (34:58):
You obvious pick Greg, but would I expect I'm gonna
go I'm back on the defensive end. I haven't talked
about the guy on the other side, but he sees
in his price sock. I think these guys are still
going to try and throw the ball a little more
than they normally do on us. So I'm going with
he seesans.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
I love it all right, and text in right now
who you thought was going to be? Well, who you
heard Greg Lewis make his pick for his Darwin's Dog
of the Game. Text in that name right now, and
