The Morning Breeze on Demand.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
In time now to announce our latest Morning Breeze Person
of the Week, a celebration of great people in the
Bay Area doing good things, but oftentimes not looking to
be recognized, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
And this week it's Donna who nominated Eleanor. So we've
got Donna on the phone. Tell us about Eleanor and
why you nominated her this week.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
I have never met such a helpless, gentle soul with
such a big heart. She is a volunteer at the
local food banks and pantries and when they are for
like over the past five years, I want to say,
probably she just mentioned the other day, since twenty nineteen,
I think. But when a food bank closes, for example,

(00:44):
she goes out and researches and actually shows up at
different food banks to offer her services. Oh and many times, yeah,
and many times they're surprised. I mean they're surprised, and
of course they love volunteers, but they're just surprised that
someone would walk up and probe and say, what's your schedule.
I'm here to help. And so she just recently did

(01:05):
that here in the Sunset in San Francisco, and I'm
so impressed. And you know, I tell her when I
grow up someday, I want to be just like her.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
And on top of that.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
She makes this world a better place, truly, because wherever
she goes, if it's in a group setting in the community,
like if she does a tai Chi class over at
the Castro Senior Center or City College older adults class
in the neighborhood, she will always bring a big batch
of cookies that she has baked with her heart. So

(01:39):
she's baking in the evenings. Yeah. And I've never met
a person who is so caring about another individual, like
she would give you the shirt off her back. She
would definitely give you the shirt off her back.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
It sounds like ed And we just brought Eleanor on
with us. She's been listening on hold. So Eleanor, what
do you think about what Donna is saying about you?

Speaker 4 (02:03):
Oh? My goodness, were little surprises to me?

Speaker 1 (02:10):
So Eleanor, are we here that in addition to volunteering
all around the Bay Area, you're really good at baking cookies?
Is that correct?

Speaker 4 (02:17):
The cookies that I baked this past weekend? You know,
somehow it all crumbles and it's like, oh my goodness,
I don't know. I use to rice flour and somehow
it doesn't stick together. But yesterday I took some cookies
to one of the food pantries and you know, same thing.
It was all crumbling. But you know, some people ate
some they said, you know, they like the flame. The

(02:39):
half of the container was a crumbled.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
How many cookies, how many dozens of cookies? Would you
say you bacon a week?

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Oh my god, well I don't bake every week, but uh,
if I do a batch, maybe about two sheets and
maybe about a third or stuff like that. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
You know, one thing that I was telling us about
you as she was saying that you will go to
an organization and you'll actually physically walk in and say hi,
I'd like to volunteer, and that so rarely happens these days.
You know, everything's online or maybe they'll call and and
I'm sure that they kind of do a double take,
thinking that you're not actually going to follow through with it,

(03:20):
and then you do.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
No, I just you know, I started volunteer for It's
a San Francisco weren food bank. You know, during the pandemic,
a lot of the community you know, pantries like churches
and I guess community centers stay closed because of the
COVID thing, but you know they the San franscomer In
food Bank, they opened up all the outdoor venues where
people could come and you know, still get food. But yeah,

(03:44):
that's how I started.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Well, Eleanori, you're definitely making the Bay Area a better
place is which is why we are naming you the
Morning Breeze Person of the Week. We're also going to
give you brunch for two on the Bay courtesy of
City Cruises.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Oh my goodness, definitely. I want to share that with Donna.
Oh speak wow, Eleanor.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
Do you make this world a better place?

Speaker 4 (04:07):
You do many all things with great love.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
And your cookies are made with love and that's all
that really matters at the end.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Of the day. Oh my goodness, thank you, Thank you, Donna.
I'm I'm on a speech to us right now.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Thank you, Eleanor, Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
You have a wonderful day, and thank you both for
being on with us today.

Speaker 4 (04:29):
Oh, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
I mean I kind of want cookies right.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Now, so do I And I don't care if they're crumbling.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
I would take those crumbled cookies that she thinks are
a fail. Well they're a win.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
With the rice flower. They're perfect for you.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Ackis if you have a person in your life, like

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
