Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan Weekend is
a weekly programmed designed to win form and enlighten on
a wide range of public policy issues, as well as
news and current events. Now here's your host, Phil Tower.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
It's West Michigan Weekend from iHeartRadio. Thank you so much
for tuning in. I am so glad you've joined us
across whatever iHeartRadio station you may be listening to. And
this is one of the fun parts of my job
when we get to talk about fun things. This is
definitely a fun thing. Michigan's premiere culinary celebration, the Grand
Rapids International Wine, Beer and Food Festival. You know, it's
(00:39):
just around the corner, returning to de Voss Place for
another fantastic year November twenty one and twenty two, just
in time for the holiday season. We are so fortunate
to be able to catch up with the person who
knows everything about the show, Don Baker, Associate Festival Manager
with the Grand Rapids International Wine Beer and Food Festival.
(01:00):
It's a mouthful, but we'll get it in multiple times
throughout our conversation. Good morning, Dawn.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Good morning. And you know we started with a little
different title for the festival. It was originally the Wine
and Food Festival, but then Grand Rapids went and won
Beer City USA, So how could we not add beer? Yes,
but even that, I know, Phil, it seems long, But
even that doesn't really encompass all of the various things
(01:27):
that you're going to get to taste. I mean, this
is the Near West largest tasting room, so just think
about it that way.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
It is the largest tasting room. And there's a lot
to talk about with respect to that, including a charity
gilla which is called Cheers for Charity benefiting Hospice of Michigan.
We'll talk about that in just a moment. The most important,
you know, we'd like to say when we're on the radio,
what is the most important thing for you, our listener
to know? Well, first of all, first and foremost, tickets
(01:57):
are on sale for the Grand Rapids International Wineber and
Food Festival. Everything we talk about is at gr Wine
Festival dot com. Grwine Festival dot com. The show tickets
are on sale. The charity event tickets Cheers for Charity Thursday,
November twentieth, which is a fantastic night. Those tickets are
on sale and one of the things. We talk about
(02:20):
this on the radio. By the time the radio broadcast airs,
they're almost sold out, if not sold out. The restaurant pairings.
These six regional restaurants Don Baker offering inimate pairings Friday
and Saturday night during the show. This is this is
kind of the krem ded la prem of the gr
International wineber and Food Festival experience. If you would allow
(02:42):
me to put that title.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
On that fair enough, fair enough, I think that you've
enjoyed a couple of these restaurant pairings, so you can
absolutely share that. I will say the entire festival is
meant to be very experiential and engaging and educational, and
the rest pairings are one of the things that it's
very limited. Right, So, over the course of those two days,
(03:06):
each of the sixth restaurants offer five different seating times,
but at each one of those seating times there are
only twenty seats, So that means there's very limited experience
of having a chef putting together a four to six
(03:26):
course meal right in front of you, along with pairing
that with beverages that suit the course, and then they
talk through those courses, the creativity and maybe how their
culinary team came up with those things. The tasting and
the research that went into it. That's kind of fun.
And then they really share about the flavor notes and
(03:48):
it helps you learn about how foods really work together
with various beverages. So there is a bear pairing again
this year to us by Archival. There's also a couple
of line pairings being brought back again by the Kitchen
by Wolfgang Puck and also Madrid. But you know those
restaurants well, and even if you don't, I will tell
(04:10):
you they don't do the same menu every year here
at the festival, and it's not the same menu at
the restaurant. This menu for all of these restaurant pairing participants,
it's created and crafted specifically for this event. But onward,
we also have a new restaurant participating. It's I should
say a new private dining group. It's Knco and they
(04:34):
have partnered for a wine pairing with the Michigan Governor's
Cup Award winning wines. Now that competition took place this summer,
but they are creating this menu that features those wines specifically.
And I know a lot of people are on the
fence about Michigan wine. This is a great way to
(04:56):
experience it. Coming to the festival another way. We have
also another new restaurant, Mud Petty. They are coming and
they have a brunch pairing. Fill We have not had
that ever in the history of the festival, and I
am so excited about this one because I'm a person
who couldy brikfast all day long. And then each nexfast course,
(05:18):
if you will, is paired with a beverage. Yeah, whether
it's a cocktail or something that has you know, Morelmoso style,
or maybe it is something that is coffee related, but
oh my goodness. And then lastly, we have a spirit pairing,
another new restaurant being brought forward. And many of you
have been to Wonderland a skilling. It's in Muskegon. They
(05:40):
definitely have a great culinary team and their spirits and
cocktails phenomenal. So when I tell you there's limited tickets,
and now I'm telling you about who's participating, I'm expecting
that you're going to want to get out there and
see what tickets are left and get yours booked now.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
And they're very limited. Don Baker, I know that's probably
one of the most important things we want to stress
is the limited number of tickets for these restaurant pairings,
and they can be purchased as people hear us talk
about this on the radio at Grwindfestival dot com real quickly.
Anything else they should know about the pairings, just.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Again, get on our website. You'll actually be able to
see each menu along with the beverages that they're paired
with each course, I should say, under each restaurant, So
all the information is there as well as the times
and the price point, and it's just a great way
to kind of navigate the festival. Maybe you start out
(06:36):
a little bit earlier than your pairing, you do some tasting,
then you enjoy that pairing, which is a seeded event,
so you know, it's very relaxing and like I said,
engaging and educational, and then you continue on doing more tasting.
Maybe it's hitting the rendezvoute through area with dessert cordials.
There's just a lot to experience. But get on our website,
(06:59):
take a look at those men news and get your
tickets book.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
We're speaking with Dawn Baker. She is the Associate festival
manager for the Grand Rapids International Wine, Beer and Food
Festival coming up November twenty one and twenty two, kicking
off this wonderful weekend an early start on Thursday Night,
November twenty Cheers for Charity VIP Night six to nine
(07:22):
pm into the Devorce Place Grand Gallery, benefiting the wonderful
folks at Hospice of Michigan. Also with us in this segment,
Barbara Anderson, Associate Vice President Philanthropy, Hospice of Michigan. And
this is a wonderful event. I had the pleasure of
being there last year. Barbara, and first of all, thank
you for joining us. Why is this an important night
(07:45):
and why is Hospice of Michigan involved. This is obviously
a special night, and tell us a little bit about it.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Absolutely well. Yeah, as you said, you know, we're so
grateful to be back for year two with the festival.
We were lucky enough to partner last year and they're
so happy to be able to continue that on. You know,
events like this are really important because our hospice is
a not for profit and that means that we need
to rely on the community and events like this to
(08:13):
be able to raise funds so that when patients and
families need us, we don't ever have to say no.
So we do take care of everyone, regardless of their age, diagnosis,
or ability to pay. So so whe at end of life,
you know, you don't want to be worrying about you know,
bills and just all these other things that are kind
of swirling around you. We want to be able to
really just care for that patient and family, and when
(08:35):
we have events like this, it gets us.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Closer to be able to do that.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
I think that's really important. What you just said is
that some families there may not be the financial means
to pay for Hospice of Michigan services. And that's why
this wonderful Cheers for Charity event it's so important. This
puts money in a fund where people who need access
to Hospice of Michigan services it's available to them. That's
(08:59):
why this is such a wonderful opportunity to pay it forward.
End of life is a necessary part of life, and
thank goodness for Hospice of Michigan. The Cheers for Charity
is a great event. It is a Thursday night event
six to nine pm at de Vos Place and the
tickets Don Baker for the gala are on sale already.
(09:23):
The beautiful thing about this is they've got a lot
of great benefits with this Cheers for Charity ticket that
come when you purchase a ticket at one hundred and
fifty dollars per person. What should our listeners know about
Cheers for Charity tickets?
Speaker 3 (09:37):
First of all, yes, they're on sale, right, we need
to share that. I think additionally that this year the
focus program is veterans focused in our community. Actually, all
of West Michigan and beyond just went through almost the
two week Greatest Generation Celebration. This year's funding goes to
(09:58):
support a veteran program. And I'll let Barbara speak more
to that, but I know that's near and dear to
my heart personally, and it should be to all of
us professionally as well. So you know, first and foremost
of that. But in addition, this is a night where
it's a little bit more of a curted experience. Yes,
there are our participating restaurants, we have some of them
(10:21):
at this night. We also will have a lot of
beverage tables also hand picked curated for this evening, some
very special guests, and they're a program, so there's even
more entertainment. And I think that you put those things
together bring you know, some plans enjoy this event. Here's
(10:44):
the real value added to it. You're going to end
up talking and enjoying and really favoring the experience. It's
more than you can fit into three hours. You're not
going to go through those one hundred and fifty casing
tickets that are loaded on for that evening evenings enjoy
and so you'll be able to use those tasting tickets
to come back Friday or Saturday and hit other aspects
(11:06):
of the festival that you didn't get a chance to
enjoy on Thursday night. So it really is a win
win all the way around. It's a great experience with
a lot of value and supports an incredible, incredible mission.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Yeah, I love this. The entertainment and everything involved with
Cheers for Charity will benefit Hospice of Michigan's We Honor
Veterans program, providing specialized care, support and recognition for veterans
who bravely served, and this is a fantastic thing. I
also really love the fact that you can donate back
(11:42):
tickets to Hospice of Michigan for the show, and that's
a really cool thing as well. In case you're interested,
by the way, and you want to make this a
special date night for your significant other. There's a VIP
Charity event hotel package available at the Amway Grand for
a two night's day on Thursday and Friday, plus two
tickets to the Cheers Charity event, a two hundred dollars
(12:05):
SPA credit and parking at the Amway. Now that's the
way to go in first class. You want to spend
the weekend there, why not, and of course take in
the event. And I thought, for the first year, last
year was fantastic. I am so excited and highly encourage
people to get tickets early for Cheers for Charity. And
(12:26):
I just want to say to you, Barbara Anderson, thank
you for being involved. Thank you for the opportunity for
us not only on the radio right now, but at
the Cheers for Charity event. You'll have members of your
team there. People can learn about Hospice of Michigan. It's
just a great thing, a great resource here in Michigan
(12:47):
for nearly fifty years. You guys have been around since
what I think nineteen seventy eight as I read.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
Yeah, yeah, we are definitely the oldest and largest not
for profit hospice in the state and we couldn't be
more privileged to be able to care for especially our veterans.
So right now, one in every five patients that we
serve is a veteran, and we know that they have
special and unique needs the end of life. And so
(13:15):
not only do we get to thank them through our
ceremonial opinions, but we also train our clinicians to know
how their unique needs can can best be met. So
really important.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Events like this real quickly. If you can't attend Cheers
for Charity and you want to support Hospice of Michigan's
We Own our Veterans program, you can make a donation
at hom dot org, hom dot o RG that's Hospice
of Michigan's website. For tickets to the restaurant pairings, tickets
to the show, the Ground Rapids International Wine, Beer and
(13:48):
Food Festival Show on November twenty first and twenty second,
and of course Cheers for Charity tickets. It's all at
gr Windfestival dot com, g R one Festival dot com.
I've got less than a minute left, don Baker anything
else they should know in thirty seconds, Jess that.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
This is the premiere pre holiday celebration, and so we're
celebrating with the opening night cheers for charity, giving back
to the community, and two people who are your neighbor.
And then as you come to the festival and enjoy
all things student beverage, you also are going to run
at your davery. So it really is this continuous three
(14:30):
day celebration. What a way to kick off the holiday season.
We all know and love that, and we're just excited
to have the West Michigan and actually withdraw from all
over the state that community come and celebrate with us.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Indeed, Dawn Baker, Associate Festival manager with the crime Rapids
International Wine, Beer and Food Festival with us on the
segment of West Michigan Weekend, as well as Barbara Anderson,
Associate vice president of Philanthropy with Hospice of Michigan, talking
about the g Rapids International Wineber and Food Festival Gerwinfestival
dot com.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
You've been listening to iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan
