Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly, I
see Lauren Smith, Tony Brooks, and for Brett Pikita. It
is June thirteenth. Father's Day is Sunday, and you're doing
it wrong. Well, not everything, but they're going to talk
about that this weekend on Gardening Simplified. Rick Weist is
on that program and has been a part of this
(00:21):
one for decades. Thanks for doing this today, brother, Happy
Father's Day.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Hey, thanks so much thing to you. And like Tom Cruise,
I do my own stunt, just not intentionally.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
So what are we doing wrong in the landscape.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
I think we talk a lot about catch them doing
something right, but there are some things that we are
deliberately doing that you should just stop.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yeah, this week's show is that don't do it show.
For example, with your irrigation system, don't set it and
forget it. It's a big problem and I see it
in landscapes all the time. You need to be inspecting
your heads to make sure they're operating properly, and you
(01:04):
also need to be paying attention to weather conditions. So
don't set your irrigation system and forget it. I call
it an AI problem, not artificial intelligence, but automatic irrigation.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Our neighbor across the street actually was yep, had the
sprinklers going in the middle of that downpour.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, whoops, you know, that's exactly it. We have a
tendency to set the sprinklers early in the year and
then just walk away until we get to Halloween. And
it's a big mistake, especially if your automatic irrigation is
hitting plants. I've always preached that automatic irrigation is made
for lawns, not necessarily landscape plants, and it can do
(01:47):
a lot of damage. Don't scalp your lawns, don't copy
your neighbors. Be an original. Maybe your neighbors are doing
it wrong. Don't throw up your hands and say I
give up because the deer eat everything. Oh no, that's
not true. The buck stops here. As a matter of fact,
on next week's show, will devote the entire show to
(02:11):
Bambi and try to help folks out with the deer pressure.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
The sprinkler thing hits home with me because we do
it just the opposite way. It's not just that it's
running when it's thunderstorming. We'll shut the thing off because
of that and then go on vacation and have the
driest week in the history of West Michigan and come
back and the thing is page and then it takes
forever to try to get it back.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
You know. It's interesting to bring that up, Steve, because
one thing I've been tracking closely in the horticulture and
agriculture industries, the use of AI has become something that's
really predominant, like machine vision or sensors as far as
water is concerned. But we're not at the point yet
(02:59):
where it's generally available or affordable to the home owner.
And I'm waiting for that day to come along.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, I mean there's a rain sensor that's kind of
that's always an add on, right when you're like power windows,
I don't know do you need them?
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I just wet my plant?
Speaker 3 (03:21):
What about I remember the one time.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
I mean, there's some things that you're doing wrong that
you get immediate direct response from, Like the time that
the kernel bought a bag of grass killer as opposed
to fertilizer.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
And boy does that stuff work.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
You know, Steve, I see it all the time. We
call it involuntary plants plug.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
You will hear the program tomorrow and Wood Radio it
starts at nine o'clock. If you go to Gardening Simplified
on air dot com, there are a variety of podcasts
and I'm learning you can actually see it too. There
are there is a video components. So if you ever
wondered what Rick weisst looks like you'll have immediate gratification.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
He's a handsome man.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Thanks Rick, Hey, thank you very much. Just podcast, YouTube
and radio have a great weekend.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Who knew? I think the video component's over stimulating. That's
just me.
