Speaker 1 (00:00):
Grand Rapids Griffins are home for three this week Wednesday
and Friday against Lee Valley. We'll have tickets to give
away for tomorrow's game and Sunday versus Iowa. This is
West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly and Laurence Smith MKITA
is back with US soon. Tony Brooks fitting and captain
filling in with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Josiah Didier in
(00:22):
the power play on the liveline. Josiah, thanks for doing
this today.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Of course. Thanks for having me. Guys.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
So you grew up in Littleton. I just wanted to
as it's one of the coldest days we get here
in West Michigan and it's causing a myriad of traffic problems.
How does a daylight today measure up to the memories
of your childhood in Littleton?
Speaker 2 (00:43):
I mean it depends. They got pretty cold there growing
up sometimes, you know, but a lot more snow. But
I don't think it's done this cold where I've lived
for a long time now, so I'm definitely not used
to it anymore.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
I wanted to ask you a quick question about the
sea on the sweater and it's an honor. It's cool
it's not the first time you had it on your
sweater and another club as well. But talk to us
a little bit about the role of captain when it
comes to hockey, not just necessarily helping disseminate information from
(01:16):
the coach, but what about your own leadership.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, you know, it's a huge honor, just like you said,
you know, and something I don't take lately, and it's
something you know, I got to put a lot of
work into, and you know, it's just yeah, not necessarily
just between the coach and me and the players. It's
just how I leave the players on the ice, you know,
in our own way, you know, kind of just like
showing my work ethic and trying to be the hardest
(01:39):
worker on the ice, and you know, trying to get
guys to do the same, and you know, doing whatever
we can to win games, you know, trying to leave
a team that way.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Jess, I assume you've gotten a chance to watch some
of the international hockey play. Team USA is now set
to face off against Team Canada in a couple of
days for that Foreign Nations Final. Is there anything you've wants,
You've enjoyed, players you've been really liking with this.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
I mean, I'm I'm tm USA all the way, you know,
being an Americans, so I love watching them. You know,
It's it's fun to have this international competition mid season.
You know, you only really get it every four years
with the Olympics, so it's fun to see it, and
it's fun to see TVSA crushing it. And it's going
to be it's gonna be an exciting rematch.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Against Canada for those are new to the sport. Speaking
of that little matchup, there were a little there was
a little dust up just as things begun. What are
the conditions for a hockey fight? I mean, it's it's
not just that it's legal. It happens from time to time.
(02:44):
There are some written and unwritten rules about when it
actually happens. But as a fan, if you see something
like that, generally, why does it happen?
Speaker 2 (02:55):
I mean, it usually happens if you know, some of
their team does something that you don't like, kind of
goes after one of your teammates. You're kind of sticking
up for one of your guys. But you know, at
the start of the game like that, that's just you know,
guys trying to get the team going, and you know,
it's just just look at the other guy and be like, hey,
you want to go, and sure, let's go.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
You know, so it's generally a cossentual. It's fascinating because
every time this has happened to me at work, there
have been legal ramifications. So the idea of outside of
your performance on the ice, scoring goals and assists and
all that stuff, it's just fascinating to me.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yeah, it's you know, it's it's funny. You know, it's
part of the game and it happens, and you know,
you don't see it as much anymore, and it's gotten
more of a respect thing and kind of just making
sure guys don't get too out of control out there.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
So just say, I got to ask you guys home
tomorrow night for a winning Wednesday and then you're home
on Friday for a two dollars be er two dollars
dog game. Do you notice any kind of energy difference
with crowds on nights like that.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
I wouldn't say we noticed anything too different. I mean
maybe Friday night the crowds are a little more rowdy,
which is fun, but you know, I think we get
pretty good crowds every.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Single night, So you can certainly help support your team
three ways this week Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at Van
Andel Arena. Captain with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Josiah Didier,
thank you so much for your time today.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Thank I appreciate it
