Speaker 1 (00:00):
It was the first official weekend of Pope Leo the fourteenth.
This is West Michigan's Morning News, Steve Kelly and Brett Bikita,
guy that saw the White Smoke. Who is back from
the Vatican into London, his home base. Jonathan Savage with
Fox News Radio. Thanks for doing this today.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Hello, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
So talk to us a little bit about the stuff.
What's he getting done already?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah, he's held to of mose main public events. He
first of all held a mass in public on Sunday
which he talked about war. He talked about how the
Second World War may have ended eighty years ago, but
we're now facing the tragedy of what he called a
Third World War. In pieces talking about Ukraine, Gaza, Pakistan.

(00:48):
And then today he talked to journalists and we're more
than six thousand journalists who were in Rome last week
covering the conclave and the start of the reign of
Pope Leo the fourteen. And as you might expect, he
talk to journalists about journalism. He was urging them to
use their words for peace, to give voice to the voiceless,
to stop being partisan, as he called it, but also

(01:12):
a bit of solidarity, talking about journalists who've been jailed
for simply reporting the truth. So yes, he's covering a
couple of key themes of the start of his pontificate.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
We last week had someone from the Acting Institute, which
is right around the corner from US, that said, be
super careful about assigning American political terms to Roman Catholic popes.
But a lot of people are trying to lean in
and find out just what kind of pope he'll be
and just where this papacy will go. Any subtle messages

(01:47):
out there that we should keep our eyes on.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Well, look, I mean it's like you say, people are
rushing to see a liberal. He's going to be conservative,
you know. I think for a lot of liberals, there's
no pope would have been considered liberal. But then there's
some messages which Pope Leo has been getting out and
even before he became pope, which would raise the ire
of conservatives, particularly as regards refugees, as regards migration, where

(02:15):
he is I think far more sympathetic to the plight
of refugees and migrants than many to the top of
the Trump administration, certainly, and so he has been talking
about about that many times in recent months and years,
so we look to that on the more sort the
conservative side of things. Of course, he's a Roman Catholic priest,
the highest Roman Catholic priest. He's not going to come

(02:36):
out in favor of abortion anytime soon.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
For example, Well, let's talk a little bit about one
of the things we've been hearing a lot about in America,
and that's just brothers. When is there going to be
a gag order on the kid from Chicago and the
guy from Florida? Did you just take it a little easy?
I mean, how much trouble can they get him in?

Speaker 2 (02:58):
They certainly have been revealing quite a lot about him,
haven't they. I mean they you know, maybe, I don't
know if there's going to be a guy gorder. He
there are expected to be flying to Rome before too long.
Perhaps the Pope will have a word with his brothers. Yeah,
I was asking him to perhaps hold their council a

(03:19):
little more at that point.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yeah, the one time at Christmas when I have that tantrum,
Really does it have to come up? Yeah? Jonathan Savage
with Fox News Radio in London this morning, Thanks for
your time today.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Thank you
