Speaker 1 (00:00):
I got to tell you, a lot of the color
analysts for this, this big shocking Pope News couldn't believe
they couldn't find on their roster their cheat sheets for
an American cardinal. This is West Michigan Morning News. Read Bikita,
Steve Kelly and at the Vatican this morning once again,
Jonathan Savage with Max News Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Good morning, Good morning. Yeah, we got history made, didn't
we last night? The first ever white Sox fan to
be elected as Pope.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
And boy, they need some hope from the Pope because
it's a tough year already. It's we giggle.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
But there a lot of reasons why a lot of
those cardinals were a little reticent to maybe pick an American,
but we have one now.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, and this was this was not expected. He was
He's not expected because for a long time they didn't
like the idea of giving the sabacy to a superpower.
Ever since in the fourteenth century, a French polk took
the essentially took the Pontifico over to France and struggled
to give it back. And they've also thought that the
US has too much power in the world. But they

(01:00):
decided looking at his CV but actually he was the
perfect pope, not just because he spent two thirds of
his life outside the United States, working with disadvantaged communities
in Peru, in Latin America, in Europe, but also because
of his ability to speak multiple languages, the fact that
he was known to the cardinals for many, many years.

(01:23):
He was in charge of a committee of choosing and
recommending bishops to be appointed to the pope. He was
someone who has seen could reach out to the various
divisions within the Roman Catholic Church and bring it back together.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yeah, and we've seen some speculation about how and why
this thing happened. But to the faithful, first those that
were there, they seemed delighted about the news yesterday.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yes, there was delight. First of all when the white
smoke appeared, a rush of adrenaline, four by a rush
of humanity as they raced forward to get in position.
Then an hour later when his name was announced in
Latin and people figured out who's that, and then the
words American Americans sort of rippled around the crowd. There
was a lot of joy and excitement, the idea that

(02:08):
they were witness the history. Certainly, it didn't matter a
jot to those who were there the nationality of the
new pope. What they're interested in is what kind of
hope's going to be well, and.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
To that point, the Pope Francis actually got to pick
some of those people that picked this person. So I've
heard that if you like Pope Francis, you're probably gonna
like this guy too.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yes, he picked eighty percent of the cardinals who picked
his successors, so yeah, he did have a bit of
an influence over this. We perhaps shouldn't be surprised that
the new pope is someone who was a chosen one
of Pope Francis. He brought him into the Vatican, he
brought up to the level of archbishop and then the
cardinal incredibly quickly. He was very close to the former pope.

(02:55):
But at the same time, when he came out he
was wearing traditional paper garb that I think was a
gesture to those in the Catholic Church who thought that
Folk Francis was too unorthodox, not traditional enough, that he's
going to be a different kind of pope.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Jonathan, I got to ask you on the other side
of this, is there someone this morning or a group
of the cardinals who are maybe a little bit in
shock and the fact that they thought that, you know,
their representative was going to be the next pope.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
I think there is certainly a bit a bit of shock.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
I was reading the comments of a cardinal this morning
who said that he certainly didn't see this coming, but
actually when he thinks about it, it was the sort
of the perfect choice of Austria's Christophe Schuenbourne is saying
that Robert Privos has the qualifications that speak for the

(03:49):
office and also pointing out that the fact this was
the fourth ballot, that's a pretty quick conflict. It was
the fifth ballot we've seen before the seventh ballot, so
clearly there was a lot of momentum behind.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
And straight to work already presiding over a mass of
the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican this morning. Fox News
Radio is Jonathan Savage. Thanks for your time today.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
