Speaker 1 (00:00):
I've had so many discussions today about the power of prayer,
about faith and about the strength and finding the strength
from within. And now I'm so glad because Jacob Porter
has an organization called one percent Better, one percent Better. Mikayla,
could we all be one percent better?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
I think we could, and I'm curious his equation to
get to one percent better?
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Joining us now over the phone, Jacob, thank you so
much for being part of our show today. My cousin
Jill found you. I think she knows maybe mutual people,
and right away Jill's like, Mindy, you and Mickayla need
to interview Jacob. What he's doing with our youth and
wrestling and spiritual beliefs is unbelievable. So welcome to the show.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Thank you very much for having me. Mendy, thank you
very much. MICHAELA.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
You're welcome.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Tell us a little bit, yeah, get us started, set
the foundation.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
My favorite, one of my favorite Bible verses is a
seasion six twelve, or we don't wrestle against flesh and blood,
but against principalities and powers again, rulers of darkness of
this world, against spiritual wickedness and high places, and so
that's the way I kind of came up with the
one percent better aspect. About five years ago, I found
out that I have epilepsy. Shortly thereafter, my youngest son
(01:15):
was also diagnosed with an epilepsy. That basically I have
temporal lobe and my son, Easton has a form called
BEX where he will eventually be able to grow out
of his So the initial launch of this was to
raise epilepsy awareness by trying to explain to each kid, hey,
one percent better. Trying to build your brand comparison is
(01:36):
the thief of joy. As we know, build the brand
that God made you to be. Look at yourself through
his lens, not the world. I am vertically challenged. I'm
five to seven on a good day. But in one
of our first sessions, I told all the kids that said, Hey,
I don't know if you guys know this, but I'm
never going to dunk a basketball. But I'm not going
to complain that. But I'm not going to complain about it,
(01:57):
and I'm going to own my brand. I'm going to
play really good defense.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Though.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
But coming full circle and how we transition into what
we are currently today, Epilepsy is a very broad disease
that we deal with, and we don't know enough about
the brain. But one thing I realized that is crippling
our society is generalized anxiety disorder and childhood obesity. And
(02:21):
so what we tried to come up with. I've been
very blessed to have a very nice support system my family,
and we were able to get a really nice support
of directors established Charles Quell, Timpope, Blake, Porter, Danny Shock,
Coach Sawyers with Pack Jim and then my pastor Brent Cunningham.
I would never be anywhere without their support and guidance.
(02:44):
It kind of came from one of our men's group
studies is I was trying to come up with something
because I couldn't stand the situations that were going on
around and I could either complain about the issues that
I couldn't stand or I could try to make a difference.
And I first went to my pastor. And it's not
his responsibility. You know, our pastors take on a lot
of a lot of the world, and some of the
(03:06):
volume that they take on I could never imagine. And
it basically kind of empowered me to reach out to
the Epilepsy Alliance of America to talk with them and
try to see how I can make a difference. And
so what I tried to do was is what is
the best way that I can give God the glory?
And not Jacob Porter, not any of us from the board,
(03:26):
but we want to help kids because if you help
the kids, you have a really good chance of helping
the family. And my family is paramount to me. I
think I am where I am because of my family's
faith and the support system that we have. And what
one percent better is trying to establish is that support
system for these kids. We don't try to tell these kids, hey,
(03:48):
you have something X, Y or z E. What's wrong? No,
this is life and you're going to get through it.
It's hard sometimes, but the Bible says will never leave you,
nor forsake you. Focus on His word, his truth. There's
a lot of things that can contract us out there.
And if we open up our Bibles here and there
and look at exactly what he says, sometimes it is
a little misleading and we don't understand the verse at
(04:11):
that moment, but maybe we read it again another day
or another week or another month, and maybe that's what
God was trying to plant that seed back then, and
it's just been real exciting to see how God has
kind of allowed this to all transpired. You know, if
you told me back in November we would be where
we're at. I'd be telling that this is the only
way that we're doing it is through God. We started
(04:32):
in the middle of November at a facility Anderson Mercy's Healthplex,
and I rented out a racquetball room and transitioned it
to a wrestling facility. We had over one hundred kids
come to our room. We went to four different states
for tournaments in the weekend, and each tournament that we
went to, we would give a shirt it says cross
stace th epilepsy or one percent Better and on the
(04:53):
back it says Christ Saved or his plans are in
the greater than inside tournament. Is that right?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Wrestling?
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yeah, yeah, we were going to wrestling tournaments. And the
link with the wrestling is is with epilepsy, our cognitive
skills get attacked first. And so by practicing and enhancing
your cognitive skills, whether through fitness, exercise, wrestling, kickboxing, forms
of fighting disciplines, those can help alleviate your seizure frequencies.
(05:22):
And so through that research, I was able to find
out connection points that also help alleviate anxiety.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
I had no idea that wrestling could do that. We're
almost out of time, though, Jacob, what do you think that?
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I have so many thoughts because Jacob, my son is
diagnosed with epilepsi, has tonic chlonic seizures. I did not
know this about wrestling. So that's fascinating in some of
these other areas. And just in a small world moment,
Ephesian six to twelve is your favorite. We just had
a guest in here who was just increased in ephesis
(05:57):
where Paul wrote to the Ephesian, So it's very full
circle moment. How are what are the things you're noticing?
I guess with these kids who are doing this now
that they're invested and.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Involved, wrestling is kind of misunderstood. You know, it's a
sport that it's very it's not real popular. But what
I try to do is give these kids basically the
tools to see their true potential what they already have.
And let's let's maximize that wrestling is universal. Like if
you can be blind, you can be deaf, you can
(06:27):
have a missing limb. I actually wrestle with an individual.
We've had no arms and legs in college. And that's
the thing I love is that.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
It's no arms and no legs in college. And he
was a wrestler yep, but the.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
College amount Saint Joseph Dustin Dustin Carter. He wrestled for Hillsborough.
He was a state qualifier. He had a skin issue
disease that it basically had to have an amputate from
his elbow down and from his knees downs. But you
know what, it's just what's your opportunity, not what's your obstacle.
Use these things to launch you, not withstanding you from
(07:04):
where you're supposed to go for his vision and his goals.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
That is awesome. What is your opportunity, not your obstacle.
So you're in the Cincinnati area, do you work with
kids all over the state of Ohio?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Primarily we are focused on right now on since Cincinnati,
we are focusing more in that Tri state region. We
do get the opportunity. I'm very fortunate with. We have
a wrestling club called the Woodshed, and we also have
a wrestling called wrestling Club the Tola Wrestling that basically
open their doors to allow me and a bunch of
(07:37):
the kids to come train, and it's neat because of
the relationships that are established. You know, you want kids
to be around like minded individuals who share the same
faith but also the same discipline. Because it's misunderstood you're
not supposed to follow other people. You got to build
your brand. Like with wrestling, it's very similar to other sports.
Everybody is unique, our body types are different. What I
(07:59):
can do may not be successful for other people and
vice versa. But own that brand and don't get frustrated.
If one door isn't opening and you're knocking on it,
let's find a different way. Let's let's go for a
different key. It's don't be frustrated. And that's where I
think Sometimes people hear all if I go to a
doctor and he says I do this and it doesn't work,
(08:19):
maybe that one, you know, one thing didn't work. Maybe
let's find something different. Some people respond better to cardio training,
some people respond better to strength training, but don't give up.
Find a solution that works best for you.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
How do people learn more about getting involved with this
or to have a kid in their life who needs
to plug in.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
I'm really trying to hammer our website down but we
have three forms of communication that we are trying to
put out to the masses. On Instagram, we are the
number one and it's percent plus spelled out, so it's
one er E N T p l us. And then
on Twitter or x it's at Jacob j A Kob
(09:07):
one three zero, and then on Facebook it is one
percent better all O n E E R C E
N T b E T t e R on Facebook.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Okay, Jacob, thank you. I'm so glad that my cousin
Jill hooked us up and coordinated this. It's such great
information and the whole epilepsy thing with Michayla's son just
hit really home to her and I'm sure with a
lot of our listeners as well. Thanks for making the
difference in so many lives and taking an opportunity instead
of a would you call it op stocks? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:42):
I love that, Yeah, Jacob.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Thanks, Thank you guys. And one thing I want to
say real fast Colin Moore and Johnny de Julius, they
are coming down for our first camp tomorrow. The best
part is is my brother was able to collaborate with
Jesus One. We have every ninety shirts ordered with Jesus One.
So our first camp, over fifty something kids. Everybody's wearing
Jesus one shirts.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
That's upstanding. Yeah, that's what Ohio state athletes wore those
all year Jesus one. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Great job, Jacob, thank you. This is what matters on
