Speaker 1 (00:01):
In a couple hours. What matters show has been you know,
from looking back at years gone by, nostalgia, things that
you miss, looking like your own life as a kid,
things that you miss how you grew up and maybe
how you're raising your kids.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Yeah, I think that, you know, looking back and being
a little introspective, it's always good for the soul.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
And we're going to have this last half hour, at
least the first part of it dedicated to a new author,
a new children's author. Her name is Kim Kish. Kim,
welcome to the studio. Before we get into your book,
and I know you brought your illustrator to and we're
going to hear from both of you. But was this
something because so many people say I've always wanted to

(00:41):
write a book, I've always wanted to write a book,
but then they never really put it down on paper,
so it's just a thought that never gets done. Is
this something you've always wanted to do?

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Well, I'm going to say yes, and no good answer,
because I never had time when I was working, you know,
and I never had any time for myself to create
at home or to think about other endeavors because I
was so busy with athletics at the high school, and

(01:12):
theater at the high school, and so forth and so on.
But when retirement came around, I held up a promise
that I made to Edie and she made to me.
Eons ago, I think about ten years ago, we were
working on a show at the high school and it
was three in the morning, and of course we were
still there hot gluing things together. Oh and at three

(01:36):
in the morning, you know, you talk about everything you
can think of just to stay awake and burn your
fingers on the hot glue gun. So we we were
talking and Edie said, well, Kim, when you get done
with all of this, what are you going to do,
like when you stop directing?

Speaker 4 (01:53):
And I said, I.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Don't know, maybe maybe I'll write a children's book. And
she goes, oh, okay, I'll be I'll be your illustrator.
That is exactly how this started. And it literally ten
years ago.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Here we are and here's the book.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Wow, that's a great story. So I can see why
you said yes and no, Yeah, I see.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
And Lilah All about Love is the name of the book. Yes,
And I was thumbing through it. I have to tell you,
I am coming off of a full weekend of Frozen
Junior performances with my son who was in the play.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
Oh thank you.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
But the storyline between Elsa and Anna, for those of
you who are Frozen fans, I feel some vibes in
here are sisterly love and how much they care about
each other. And that really is the first part of
Frozen Junior, before else it goes away exactly.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
Tell us a little bit about the book. I'll set
that stage, but you set the rest of it.

Speaker 6 (02:47):
You know.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Subject matter was easy for me because I never had
a sister, and my daughter never had a sister.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
She had a great brother, but not a sister.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
And when she had to little girls, it was like
two gifts of joy, you know, for.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
For me as their Gigi. And they love to be
read to.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
And we used to have them like for weekends sometimes
when their mom and dad had to go away or
had an event to go to or something like that.
We welcome the girls to our house and they loved
to read at night. And and I thought, we're getting
them this weekend.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
And I said to my husband, I said, you.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Know what, I think I'm going to go write a
little story about them.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
So they are actually Lucy and Lila or did you
use different names?

Speaker 3 (03:36):
They are actually Lucy and Live Well they they I
think they do, but I think they I think they're
also like amazed that it came to fruition. I think
that you know the fact that the there's a book
about them, and and Lilah, the littler one, says, you.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
Know, Gig, you know, are we going to are we
going to be famous?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
And I said, well, I can't promise you that, but
I said, there will always be.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
A book written about you and your sister forever.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Can't take that away now, right exactly? I have to
ask Edie, so you did the illustrations for this, and
I think they're outstanding there, thank you. But what did
Lucy and Lila think when they saw their images on
this book? Where they like, I don't look like that,
or were they, oh, you know what, that's me.

Speaker 6 (04:25):
It is a little bit of both of them, but
it doesn't.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Look exactly like them.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
It was really important that they become their own characters.
You know, it takes on a life of its own.
I think if you saw pictures of me and my
little sister growing up, I think you'd see a little
bit of Lucy and Lyla and us too.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
Yeah, And when.

Speaker 6 (04:47):
Kim Uh wrote the script or wrote the script, I've
worked in theater too long. But when she wrote the
book and handed me the manuscript of it, I knew
exactly what those characters are going to do because Lucy
and Lila are four years apart.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
My sister and I are four years apart, and a
lot of.

Speaker 6 (05:05):
These hijinks and relationship are very similar to what And
so when I came with the illustrations, Kim is like,
how did you know that that's exactly what Lucy and
Leyla do to each other. And I'm like, wow, I
know because I did the same thing.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
And speaking of four years apart, you represent that a
little here in this book.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
I love.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Towards the end, Lucy wishes that Lila would grow up faster, because.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
Four years can be hard. You love your little sister.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
And I say this because I'm one of three sisters,
but four years can be a lot when you're growing up.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
It is, and you know, they have a very very
good relationship for the most part. I mean, they're gonna
be typical sisters and they're not going to agree on everything,
and of course the older one is not gonna.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Like the oh yeah, we sat on each other, we
stole the phone from each other.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Yeah yeah, mister Lee, Yeah yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
And I've observed all of those things. However, the tender
moments are.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
The ones that mean the most to me and the
ones that stick in my heart forever. And I, you know,
having never had a sister, I watched this through them
and I'm.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
So thrilled that they are.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Caring and loving and uh with an occasional argument in there,
you know, about a barbie or something, but you.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Know that'll change to the ear. They're going to argue
a little bit more when you know, they get to
the boys scene and those teenage definitely and all that.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
But I'm waiting for like the wedding days when don't
I know, but you know, I hope I'm there to
enjoy that with them and see how how they talk
about each other, because I am sure in my heart
that they will probably be made of honor for each other.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
You know, it isn't that funny. She already hasn't married, and.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
It does well in her mind, but it does. It'll
go fast, it will you think of everything?

Speaker 4 (06:57):
Are you ready? It's gone so fast? Absolutely?

Speaker 1 (07:00):
And you do think of everything. My sister and I
were four years apart, and I can honestly say we
fought more than we got along. We get along better now, Yeah, yeah,
when you get older in life. But sure, and you
know I'm not pulling her hair and biting her friends,
chasing them these to say, mindy, where's your cage? Literally
her friends would tell me that I would chase them
around the neighborhood of the hammer.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
How is that kind of.

Speaker 6 (07:21):
Oh my god, this is what happens with sisters, This
is what happens.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
You feel mad that these two Lucy and Lila already
have so much love. So walk us through the book
a little bit. It's a quick, easy read. And if
you're listening right now, we're gonna give away three copies
six one four eight two one nine eight eighty six
six one four eight two one nine eighty six. That's
a great stocking stuff for really it is could.

Speaker 5 (07:45):
Be perfect for a stocking.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
I think about it because it's thin enough and bendable
enough that you could put it right in there for
the girls in your life, the little girls.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
Absolutely absolutely.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
And you know when you open the book, you see
the dedication, which I think is just amazing of her
parents how they came up with this. It's Lucy Olivia
and Lila Irene and their last name begins at the
and their nick their their nicknames or dedication names are

(08:17):
live and Love, Live in Love.

Speaker 5 (08:19):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
That outstanding.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
And we are on Facebook Live and I just want
to hold up the illustration Eatie.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
I mean, these are really incredible.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
We've had a few authors on that we've interviewed, and
I have to say, these are some of the best
illustrations I think that we've had.

Speaker 5 (08:36):
How do you go about designing this?

Speaker 1 (08:38):
This one was a process.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
You know.

Speaker 6 (08:41):
I started with some sketches and I had the feeling
that I didn't I wanted it to feel like maybe
it would inspire kids to take out a pencil and draw, like.
I didn't want it to feel so clean and unattainable, like.
I wanted it to feel like.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Oh, yeah, I could do that, you know.

Speaker 6 (08:59):
And so I, you know, from that launching point. But
I also, in order to, you know, in order to
pose the characters, I did make a three dimensional like
Lucy face so that I'm able to turn it in
space and say, like, you know, when she's looking like
on a.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Three quarter what does that look like?

Speaker 6 (09:17):
So I did have to like sculpt a character so
that I can see what happens in space and that
sort of thing. So even though they're line drawings and
they're relatively simple, they're not as simple as you might think.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
I love the colors.

Speaker 5 (09:30):
I think it's very fun.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
I think it's very friendly. Honestly, it says and it's
gonna sound silly, it says love to me. It's very light,
very very friendly. It is lovely. Again, we're giving away
three copies, so all you have to do is call
us up at six one four, eight, two, one nine,
eight eighty six. Will take the first three callers and
yeah we have one. Get all sounds good. Let's take Sarah.

Speaker 5 (09:53):
Sarah, you're on the line with us. Do you have
a sister?

Speaker 6 (09:58):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Three?

Speaker 5 (09:59):
Oh it's a it was a full house at your house.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (10:04):
I had an older sister and then younger twin sisters.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Oh my goodness, it really was a full house. So
do you have a daughter? Actually, I have a Lucy
m Lily. That's a perfect person to give this book too.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
That's great apart, Oh, there you go, Kim's gonna sign it.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Kim Edy can sign it specifically, who do you want
to give it to? Then Sarah Linday the same way,
l U s why correct, yep?

Speaker 4 (10:36):
And this is Lily? Is it going to her also?

Speaker 5 (10:39):
Or it's going to lose?

Speaker 7 (10:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (10:46):
Why is l I L y l I L.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
We know how that works when it goes to one
and the other one has to share it.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
We get that, Sarah, and they're five years apart. Did
we hear you say that?

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Right? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Oh that's it was meaningful that you called, Sarah.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
I'll tell you that much.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
So you're going to like this little book. It is
really really well done. So we're glad you called. We'll
take another call.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Stand the line, Sarah and our producer Ashley will get
your information.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
We'll get it to you.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Is it hard to write a children's book? And what
is the hardest part about it? Because you have to
make it a quick moving book. You don't want kids
to be bored when they read a little book and
then eady to you? Is it hard to create these images?

Speaker 3 (11:25):
So first, Kim, well you know it really I have
to say for this one, I literally went upstairs and
fifteen minutes later came back down and had my husband
look at it, and I said, look at I'm going
to read a story about the girls when they come
to this weekend, And I said, what do you think?
And he's reading it and he's looking at it, and

(11:46):
he says, I think you should be a children's book author.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
Oh my god.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
And literally that's how it started and transpired.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
And then we got really serious about it, and I
decided to go to or attend like an online school
about self publishing, knowing that that was kind of the
way people do things now. And then you know, called
Edie and I said, hey, you know that conversation.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
We had about ten years ago, how do you feel
about doing that right now?

Speaker 3 (12:17):
And that's really how it all began and how it
all starts. And these were just memories I had of
the girls when they've been with us, or we've been
with them, or you know, And I just thought it'd
be a cute surprise then. And I also wanted to
give a nod to their parents, because you know, parents
are important to kids, and kids are so important to

(12:43):
their parents.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
As she's saying this, she's looking directly across the studio
because her son Travis is in studio. Travis step up
to this microphone.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
Oh, she's gonna get you on there, Travis.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
I love Travis. Travis and I worked together and he's
one of my absolute faves, one of my favorite people
I've ever worked with in my entire career. And that's I.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Mean, Travis, do you understand how long Mindy has been
in media?

Speaker 1 (13:05):
She tells me every day as I'm old. When I'm
on the camera, Travis is behind it and he's like,
we need to close up. I'm like, you don't need
to close up in this face. Back it up. Close
Ups are not allowed on Mindy. Zoom out, baby.

Speaker 5 (13:17):
You make it look really good. She is looking really good.

Speaker 6 (13:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Whatever. So honestly, your mom did this. How proud are you?
Because we spend our entire lives being so proud of
our kids, but this is a moment that you, as
her son, get to be proud of your mom.

Speaker 7 (13:30):
Yeah no, it's uh. You put that very well and
seeing this, and I think the biggest thing that watching
her go through this entire thing is the amount of
work that really goes into it. I don't know, like
you think of like a children's book and you're like,
not that they're easy to write by any means. Because

(13:51):
they're not. And this is just watching her and Edie
and the amount of work that like truly goes into
this is insane. This is taking like this whole process,
Like Mom went back to school, relearned how to do
all of this because there's always there's so much more
to it than just writing a book. You know, it's like,
how do you market it? I'm I'm in the background

(14:12):
taking videos for hopefully used for your socials.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
That's why I'm.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Yeah, used to be in behind the camera. He used
to do into that thing.

Speaker 7 (14:22):
Yeah, you know, here and there's the day job. But no,
incredibly incredibly proud of mom, and it's cool to see
her do something that she's so passionate about. And yeah, no,
it's just it's awesome.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
That's so and it's so funny because you know, Travis
is so close with both of his parents, but his
dad worked with the Blue Jackets from the very beginning
and and he's such a Blue Jacket fan. I mean,
every week when we're together we're talking about I'm asking
about the Blue Jackets because he's you're such a follower

(14:58):
something that you just have been ill because of your dad.

Speaker 7 (15:01):
Yeah, absolutely, Now go Jackets. Everyone listening.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
We were there last night.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
They played the Rangers last night, didn't they.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Yeah, she's a big hockey mom. Oh nice, she's a
hockey family.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
So I have, you know, out of three girls, I
had two boys. So it's a little different for me now.
And I look back very fondly on my sisters and
I growing up. But it's been a new adventure of
Travis with boys.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
I will say that.

Speaker 7 (15:26):
Yeah, they all.

Speaker 5 (15:29):
Play hockey, No, just one. The other one is very
much into theater.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
But you guys would love it.

Speaker 5 (15:34):
Looks like a great combo at our house.

Speaker 7 (15:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
So if people want to get a hold of this book,
and we'll get the other names to you. In fact
that one of my friends just text me and she said,
I don't have time to call, but can you get
me one of those books? So she's got a little granddaughter.

Speaker 1 (16:21):

a kid, so you can write another book about that kid.

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
