Speaker 1 (00:00):
Have changed when we were growing up, because I really
did think things were good times back then. Of course
I love life now, but things do change and I
just have to go with the flow and go with
the punches. And they are different.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
And we were saying that we personally think the gen
xers have been really good at doing that kind of
living in both worlds.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
We said that a little bit earlier.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Dick, You've been waiting for a while. So what do
you miss from years gone by? Is it a restaurant,
a grocery store, just an overall feeling?

Speaker 4 (00:27):
You got it good, guys, You know what I really bess.
There was one by us was a Ponderosa steakhouse that
I used to go to a lot, and there was
a Freshist that Frish was still around, but they closed up.
They'd have the solid bar and stuff, and I used
to go a lot to the Golden Corral. So I

(00:47):
missed those places. I missed Ponderosa a lot.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
You're the third vote for Ponderosa. We've been hearing Ponderosa
a little bit some between us as well. Now fresh
is we had big boys and Illiny, but Frishes must
have been the people who owned your big boys ours
weren't Frish's Big Boy.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
It was just called big Boy. It was one of
my mom's first jobs.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Oh there you go.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
Yeah, and there was another place they closed. I liked here.
I don't they have them Columbus uh pizza. You ever
heard of them?

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Ah? I love CC's pizza. You know why because it
was cheap.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
It was cheap.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
You could feed your whole.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Fame Marcus and the boys. Dick still go. There's one
closer to you.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
There's one near Miami, and they go there when Logan
has honey. Yeah, yeah, they go, they'll visit. So Dick,
it's not too far from you. You need to make
a trip to the CCS.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
It's yeah, the money that will.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
To you guys.

Speaker 5 (01:42):
Thanks Dick.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
We appreciate your calling. So Londa and Rick are going
to be in in the next segment. We're going to
figure out why. But I thought we'd include you in
this conversation because.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Before we do, Allie Dale, Yeah, you guys.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Have been around for a long time. What do you
guys miss the most? Did she just insult us? No,
so it's a compliment.

Speaker 5 (02:01):
We have been around a long time. Man.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (02:03):
So my family had Seymour Bakery, so I would say
missing my Seymour Bakery and my grandfather and working there.
So that was like really cool on the east side
of Columbus near the Jewish Center. And what did they
make bakery goods with wedding cakes? My family was known
for wedding cakes, so started with the Italian wedding cakes
in town and the Grand March and all of that,

(02:25):
and then I just went on to just an array
of lots of bake goods. So they started in nineteen
twenty seven. My grandfather did.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Did you do a maratosi by any chance? Did they
do a Maritozi? That was one of those creamfield bund
in Italy? Like, oh deliciousness.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
That's why I asked if we didn't do it?

Speaker 6 (02:43):
We imported the Italian cookies from New York City because
what we did, but we built a lot of things there.
The best ice cream icing, cake icing in the world
that one. And then I also loved Amoles. People know
on Main Street Maine and Hamilton Hamilton Mean Street, not Hamilton.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Mean and kind of near Hamilton Road though yeah okay, yeah, yeah,
that was a really bustling part of town. It sounds
like back and Hamilton Man and Hamilton.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
People loved amals.

Speaker 5 (03:15):
I know what Rick's going to say, Well, you know,
when I came to Columbus in nineteen seventy four as
a musician, you know, the music industry back there was
you could work six nights a week and all the
hotels and restaurants had bands, you know, so it was
a full time job for musicians back then. Of course,
I was fortunate enough to play with the Bob Allan
Tree at the Christopher Inn, and I sure missed that

(03:37):
place because it was such a fabulous place and Bob
Allen was such a great musician, and you know that
just that was It was just different back then. Of course,
we had the Kahiki and the high Lie and all
those great wrestaurans.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
All the high Lie I forgot about. You know who
used to go to the Highlight all the time was
Woody Hayes. Yes, he was known to be seen at
the high Line. You know, this is just fun to
reminisce and you start mentioning things and then you're like, oh, yeah,
I remember that place. I did think about the Gehikie
and we had a caller who brought up the Kahiki too.
It wasn't because the food was just outstanding. It was

(04:10):
just a whole different feel an environment like nothing else
like that. It's very sixties.

Speaker 7 (04:17):
Yeah it was.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
And then then they have the bar downstairs.

Speaker 6 (04:19):
It's like the top is now you still get that
kind of vibe that was the highlight was a little
more sophisticated. Yeah, but you still had that kind of
clubby vibe Las Vegas different.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yes, we've got time for one more call before we
get to the top of the hour. Caden. You're on
the line with us now, Caden. I don't know how
much you can miss because I don't know how much
you were around.

Speaker 8 (04:41):
Well, Hey, Benny, Michaela, how y'all doing. Sorry, I've been
around very much. You know, the busy season of harvest
has been is done, and I've been just been extremely busy.

Speaker 5 (04:49):
I'm men in the.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Seventies, in the eighties, Caden.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
What do you miss from your childhood though, Caiden.

Speaker 8 (04:56):
Well, I'll tell you what I always tell my mother.
And then this told him I was actually wishing I
was born in the mid of the late eighties, because
you know, that's basically the age of the equipment that
I work around most ninety six percent of the time.
And I'm like, man, equipment was a way better, way
better than I can be kat work on it than
I have to do with dand computers. And I'm like,

(05:17):
it's just so much simpler.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
Now.

Speaker 8 (05:20):
This is coming from a to your old guy who's
a mechanic truck driver.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
I mean the.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Quality though, the way they built that equipment, Cayden, it
is totally different than the way they build it today.

Speaker 8 (05:34):
You're telling me news that I've been that. I've been
talking to my great uncle and every single old timer
I've talked to for the last decade, and it's it's ridiculous.
I mean, do you ask any old timer I know,
they'll tell you this. They'll tell you the same thing
I'm telling you, even more I need. It's a ridiculous
I mean filter for the one track or that I
was working on. It's like two hundred some bucks for

(05:55):
the one filler. It's ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Cayden, We're gonna fit in one more. Call Gary. Good
to hear from you.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Gary.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
You're on the line.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Gary, Are you there?

Speaker 7 (06:06):
Yeah, I'm here. Hey are you there?

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Yep?

Speaker 7 (06:13):
Oh, yes, we are. Well. You got a lot of
them were talking about missing Ponderosa. There's one great southern
shopping center. It's the only one left in I think Ohio.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
We were talking about, I mean, Nindy, I'm an attacks there.
Do you know how much he would love a buffet
with a steak.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Well, yeah, I mean so many of our callers have said, Ponds,
maybe they should bring that idea back. Everybody misses.

Speaker 7 (06:40):
There's also a York Steakhouse over all West across from
across from the older Lestland shopping center, which is basically gone.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Can you believe I've never been there and I live
close to it. We really do need to go.

Speaker 7 (06:56):
Out.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yeah, I know, we need to go Gary.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Thanks for all in Ungary, and really thanks to all
of those calls that came in. It was just fun
to kind of go down memory lane again and when
someone else brings up something, it triggers something and they're like,
oh yeah, I forgot about that. It was just good times.
It really really was. It was.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
And I love what YouTube just said about music and
traveling and people coming into town, and we've lost some
of that, but you can still find some of it
at the same time. So we have a great segment
coming up.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
So stick around, folks. It's all about the Valley Dale,
the most beautiful ballroom in central Ohio.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
This is what matters on six' TEN wtvn

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
