Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the road again and in the studio again. Hi guys,
Mikayla with what matters? I hear the fuzziness of a car.
I think we must have Mindy on the line. She's
joining us on her way home from the first I
guess official game of the season.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Mindy, can you hear me?

Speaker 3 (00:19):
I sure can? And that should be our scene for
the next three months. On the road again.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Just can't wait to get on the road again. I
karaoke last night, so I brought my best for you.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
What's your go to song when you karaoke? Do you
have one? Well?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Last night my go to was look Away by Chicago.
Do you remember that song?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
I do?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah? Yeah, that's your go to?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I belted it last night. Yeah. I have a list
of like ten that I.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Really like, but last night that was one of my
go tos that I used and it was it was golden.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
I'm terrible at it, but I have a lot of
fun at it.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Okay, So you literally Kemmy played what four games this weekend?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Boots kind of gave me the teaser as I was
walking in.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yes, play four games since the official start opening day
for college softball. I think college baseball starts the week after.
So this is every team across the country started this weekend.
And there's so many questions about this team. Obviously, huge
coaching change. You know, the coach who was there for
twelve years is no longer there now, so we have

(01:24):
an entirely different coaching staff. We had lost eleven seniors.
Really there's two returning seniors Cammi and Farley at second
base and shortstops, and then we had another returning she's
now a sophomore, Jazzy. Other than that, they're all fresh faces.
And when I say fresh faces, a lot of them
are fresh freshman spaces, including almost our entire pitching staff. Wow.

(01:51):
What They're fun. They're feighty, they're gritty, they want to compete,
and this team gets along already so well. And it's
fun to see Camming in her senior role bringing it
all together. I mean, she's such a great communicator that
she's the senior. It's she's filling that role perfectly. Of

(02:13):
I got you guys, you know, and it's just wonderful
to see starting out four and oh, that's just awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
So that is what it is.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
I have purposefully, I said to Boots, I haven't asked her,
because I want to hear about it on air.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
I like it when it's fresh. So four and oh
this weekend.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Four O yeah, I just and it's it's gonna go
by so fast with Kayla. I mean we've talked about
this time and time again on this show and when
she first signed on to be a buck Guy, and
now here it is her senior year. So I'm trying
just to enjoy the moment.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
I love that you want it is.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
I love you have plans to travel. We'll get you
when we can on air like this, which I love.
You have to be there for her because this is
the last go And how does.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
The season work? Is it?

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Is it similar to basketball and football where you start
off with teams that want to play Ohio State because
it is Ohio State. Like, I didn't know where you
were this weekend when you first told me, so we yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Remember, oh yeah, we talked about last week. I'm like,
I'm in Elon. You're like, the only Elon I know
is Elon, but Elon North Carolina. This university, Elon University,
is really pretty cute, quaint. So they hosted basically the
tournament where they invited schools across the country to start playing.
But you're one hundred percent right. You don't start playing

(03:33):
your Big ten opponents until a little later in the season.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Now, I will say that next week will be an
absolute challenge for the Buck guys because they are playing
some of the top teams in the entire country, from
Florida State to Alabama to Missouri Mikayla, Missouri, miss Yeah,
so this is a good warm up, but they'll really
really be tested next week and it's fun to see.

(04:00):
But in order to be the best, you gotta play
the best. So go out there and they'd hang.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
And that's a tournament in Clearwater. Am I remembering that
correctly for next weekend?

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah, it's it's the Clearwater Invitational. But I have to
tell you something that was so random and so wonderful. Okay,
So we're standing in the parking lot waiting to go
into the first game of the season, and Randy and
I are standing there with a couple other parents. You know, Hey,
good to see you again, Gaues. This is our first
time together again for the for the returners, and then

(04:31):
also you know, we all got together over the fall
and that's when we first met the new families. So
we're just sitting there talking. Well then this man I
see park a car and he starts walking up to
me and I see he has o highest stage stuff on.
So I'm just like, hey, go Bucks and he's like, Mindy,
Brian Rap. I'm like, no way, Brian Rap. You're like, wait,

(04:53):
who's Brian Rap? So Mikayla. He was a reporter for
the Westerville News, which was a small little Westerville paper
back in the day who covered Westerville News and also
Westerville sports. He covered my softball career when I was
a Warrior at Westerville North No. I graduated in nineteen

(05:14):
eighty six, and he followed our team. And then he's
been following Cammy on social media. So he's like, I've
been dying to see her play. He lives about an
hour and a half away from Elon in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Oh my god, so he shrove all the way over
to watch Cammy and the Buckeyes. I couldn't wait to

(05:34):
introduce Cammy to him after her first game. I'm like, hey,
this is Brian Rapp. He used to cover your mom
playing softball.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
But I mean, Mindy, like what a story.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
It's stories like that and the little things that make
a difference in each other's lives like that, Like that
is such an awesome thing.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
You had no clue he was coming.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
No clue. He's always said in the last three years,
you know, hey, I want to try to see your
daughter play. It just so happened that they were playing
at Elon. And then we're sitting there in the sands.
And when people say Buckeye Nation is everywhere, Buckeye Nason
truly is everywhere. So then we're sitting in the stands
and there's another couple to the left of us, and
they have on Ohio state stuff. Well, I hadn't met them.

(06:17):
If they were new parents, I always want to go
introduce myself. And I introduced myself. I said, no, do
you have a player on the team. They're like, no,
we're from Marysville but also live in Florida, and we're
on our way back to Florida. We saw the schedule
and thought we'd stop in North Carolina and it's here
on the buck guys, and they listen to our radio shows.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
No way, Yes.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
And then he knew Randy from basketball and when he
played super level professional softball. It is such a small
world sometimes it is.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
And that's one of my favorite things about Central Ohio.
I hope as much as we grow, we always stay
that way.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
We grow. But it's a small world.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
It is. It truly is. And when someone's in another
state and they have scarlet and gray on or Buckeye
closed paraphernalia, it's an instant connection. You're like, oh h I, oh, well,
but I'm happy for this team, and I think it's
gonna be fun to watch. You know, we'll really really
be tested. We may not win one game next weekend,

(07:22):
and we may who knows. I just I like, I
really like what I'm seeing right now. It's just a young, fun,
feisy team that gets along really well. Anything can happen
in the world of sport.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
A lot of grit goes a long way. So I'm
excited to see this too.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
And one last question before we talk a little bit
about the show, how long does this season last?

Speaker 2 (07:40):
So it officially started.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
This weekend, when does it last until so people can
know when to stop in to see a game, hopefully
over a Buckeye field.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
It's a few months. It's Houston in mid May, you know,
they'll do their regular season games, they'll do the Big
Ten season, and then hopefully they'll have the Buckeyes will
hopefully get into the Big Ten Tournament. It's just so
much more of a challenge this year since they added UCLA, Washington,
and Oregon. Those three schools are predominantly softball strong, so

(08:12):
only Brandy. How many teams make the Big Ten Tournament.
Only twelve teams make the Big Ten Tournament. So now
that they added three teams, we thought maybe they would
add maybe fifteen teams make the tournament or thirteen or fourteen,
but they didn't add anymore. So it's really going to
be tough to make the Big Ten Tournament. And then
of course from there it's the NCAA Tournament, you know,

(08:33):
and then the College World Series of Softball, you know,
and all that.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
So well, I like size and gritty, and I think
that can go a long long way this season.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Mindy.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
You know what else goes a long way, positivity, And
I think this team, so this freshman pitcher, freshman pitcher,
she's awesome. She had her very first game as a
college player to pitch a shutout. She pitched a no hitter.
It was almost a perfect game. But she ended up
hitting one batter, but it really no one really thought

(09:06):
it hit her. It hit the bat, but the girl
was complaining anyway. So she pitched a no hitter, and
after that she threw that last strike, the whole team
just ran around her and rallied around her. And then
something else happened big for people along the way this
last weekend. They're just playing for each other. And I
know they're young, and I know it just started, but

(09:27):
that positivity really feeds off each other. When it comes
to a team, it does.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Positivity and a new coach, right who we had.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
That's around man, Yeah, she's he is in it to
win it for sure.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
We had her in last was that last spring? I
think that was last year. Good to have her and
see a little bit of her philosophy.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
She she's she's all right in my book, based on
everything she shared. Yeah, positively fun you pause your week
It was good, It was good. I you know, I've
had a a lot of fun this weekend. I needed
to have a lot of fun this weekend.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
And all is well.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
And maybe we'll get a chance to talk about more
of it a little later in the show. Right now,
Chris has given me the signals, So I want to
talk real quickly about what we have coming up speaking
of positivity and a small world. You and I have
an interview coming up at four thirty five with a
family that a person and that we've known and we
knew about his family since we worked at NBC four,

(10:25):
and they're going through a really difficult time right now
that unfortunately many families do at some point. So we're
going to try to help and be positive in this world,
mindy and give them a hand. So Trevor Woods, Beth Woods,
his wife, will be joining us talking about Weston Woods
and some things he's going through right now coming up.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
At four thirty five. We just thought it was a
story that really needed to be shared with you guys
as they try to address a very kind of rare
cancer that Weston has. So we'll talk about that at
four thirty five today, And that.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Is something that so many families can relate to hard times,
but in those difficult times, the people who rally around you.
And then also MICHAELA, we are previewing our awesome annual
dating game show that's coming up at the end the
last Sunday of this month. We're going to hear from
our bachelorette and what he's really looking for, and also

(11:16):
how hard it is to date these days? What about
those dating apps? Do they really work? Do people avoid them?
And then we're going to hear from the restaurant of
where they'll go on their first date. Michayla.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Yeah, Flower Modern pasta bar out there in the Polaris area,
right kind of on the mall.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
So yeah, we have a lot coming up.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Valentine's Day is headed this week, and I also picked.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
A list that I knew Mindy would enjoy.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Vegetarian and carnivores alike can embrace these restaurants. So we'll
talk about that in the five o'clock hour. Two somebody's
going to use it for a date this week. I
have a feeling, Mindy.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yes, I hope.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
So, Yep, lots to come. This is what matters on
