Speaker 1 (00:00):
So McKayla and I, because we're newsgirls, we like to
keep all of you up to date on things that
are happening. And this is hot topics. And I keep
scrolling through my x account and I'm just seeing so
many videos of massive crowds that started forming early this
morning for Donald Trump's gathering event at Madison Square Garden.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
I know it's taken some heat.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
A lot of people are saying he shouldn't be there,
but he's there and there are just massive crowds and
he doesn't talk McKayla till seven, but the rally should
start at five pm when we're on the air starting
our second hour. But if you want to talk about voting,
if you've already voted, that's always a hot topic. We
only have a little over a week to talk about it,
and then sure it'll be done. But one of the

(00:43):
big stories that came out of California, did you ever
follow the Menendez brothers?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
I did. I think it was during a time where
I was really interested in becoming a journalist, so I
followed the trial. I remember when Barbara Walters interviewed them
before they were sentenced, before they knew really what was
going on How about You.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
I just remember here. It was in the eighties.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
It was more than thirty years ago, and I remember
hearing about it and just being baffled and just wow,
they actually killed their parents. Well, it was released a
few days ago that they could be out free as
early as Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
They felt like they've done their time.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
That when they started to say that they were physically
and sexually abused, no one believed them at the time.
And the new evidence has come out to light with
somebody else who has come forward and saying the same
thing happened.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
But they still murdered their parents. They did, they did.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
I think the argument is it should have been manslaughter
instead of a murder. And so I watched the documentary
on Netflix, probably about a week ago. So I was
kind of reintroduced to what was going on because I wondered,
why are all these people on TikTok talking about free
the Menendez brothers on Instagram. So I watched the documentary.
I had not realized this because I was a kid.

(02:00):
They talked about the sexual abuse. In the first trial,
the jury was deadlocked. They took it to trial again
and the judge kept that evidence out of the second trial,
so the second jury had no awareness that there was
these claims of sexual abuse.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Now to your.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Point, there's something that a cousin has brought forward, right,
there is some new evidence. You know, they killed their parents.
They say they killed their parents. I think the question
is should they They've been in prison for twenty or
thirty years, right, more than thirty manslaughter, you would have
served your time. The things that that man did to
those kids, if any of it is real, is horrific.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
So let me just read you this, okay.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
On the evening of August twentieth, nineteen eighty nine, Jose
and Kitty watching television in the den of their Beverly
Hills mansion. When Lyle and Eric entered the den carrying
loaded shotguns. Jose was shot six times, including a fatal
shot to the back of it. Kitty, the mom, was
shot ten times in total before the fatal shot to

(03:07):
her cheek. She was on the ground, Mikayla crawling away.
Lyle ran to the car, where Eric handed him ammunition
to reload before firing the fatal shot to her face.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
I don't think I can imagine being so mentally deranged
because I've not experienced sexual abuse. I will say that
I can't imagine where they were in their heads, but
I know that things like that do that to people.
Not everybody kills their parents when it happens to them,
but it does things to your head. She allegedly did
not tell anyone about the abuse, knew it was going on,

(03:42):
so they took it out on both of them. What
do I think. I think they have served thirty years time.
I think they're not a danger to society. I think
it was an awful situation. I can't imagine having kids
growing up in that kind of household.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
His family members feel like you are their family members
feel like you, and they've come up and said, yes,
they should be released free. I'm not so sold on it,
you know, I don't where does this. Who else are
we going to let loose? You know, who else are
we going to free who very drastically killed people. I'm

(04:16):
kind of on the side of you know what, Yeah,
a shame that they were physically and mentally abused, but
you still don't kill people, right.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
But you had a prosecutor who said in the second trial,
and you literally heard her say it, boys can't be raped.
That's what she said to the Jerry, and that's not true.
A lot has a lot has changed about how we
view sexual abuse in the last thirty thirty five years.
So I understand though I'm not saying free.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
That I don't, but most people are.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
They're saying they serve their time, their thirty years and
so anyway, they should be home by Thanksgiving. I'm sure
they'll have quite a story to tell, and I'm sure
they'll sell books and.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Talk about the interview. Everybody's going to want to get. Yeah, yeah,
it's going to be that. So what was your hot topic?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
My hot topic was the Washington Post deciding not to
endorse a presidential candidate for the first time in thirty years.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
What were your thoughts when you saw it was.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
The same thing with the Union they did the same thing,
the first time they have not endorsed a Democratic candidate.
They're ninety nine point nine percent endorsing the presidential candidate
who's on the Democratic ticket.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
It doesn't surprise me. It doesn't surprise me, you know.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
I look at what's happening right now with both campaigns,
and I.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Look at both sides. Mikayla.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
I look at supporters of Trump. I look at supporters
of Kamala. In fact, my husband will say to me,
why do you watch that stuff? Just look at one side.
I can't because I want to see what both sides
are feeling and saying. And in my humble opinion, and
this is just what I've observed. There seems to be
a sense of peace and calm on the Trump's campaign ticket,

(05:53):
where I think the Democratic ticket with Kamala Harris and
Tim Walls are kind of in panic mode right now.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
So do you think that's why all across my Facebook feed,
friends were canceling their Washington Post subscription left and right
over the last few days, because you think they're in
panic mode? People are upset. That is what has filled
my Facebook page. Not I've seen the Madison Square Garden thing,
but what's filled my Facebook page, what's exploded on my
Facebook page is people canceling their Washington Post subscriptions.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
See I say like this, I don't think a news outlet, print, radio, TV.
I don't think you should endorse anyone. I really don't.
You're supposed to be subjective or objective, right, You're not
really supposed to convince your readers, your listeners, your viewers
one side or another.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
I'm kind of against them.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
Ever, and in any case, any any news agency, I
don't know if that's the right thing.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
To do to endorse a candidate.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
I will say, why do we care about a newspaper endorsement?

Speaker 2 (06:50):
In twenty twenty four, why do we care about they
tell these entertainers they don't have the influence.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
A newspaper doesn't have the influence unfortunately, as you and
I know that at once.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
No, but do you do you will you vote for
someone because of an I was thinking.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
About that today. I will vote based on what I
believe with policy. That is what I plan to vote with.
And it's super interesting, right because I feel like Jeff
Bezos might be where more of the American public is
and what we talk about. In twenty twenty, he endorsed
the Democratic nominee, which was Joe Biden at the time,
so the Post did that. In twenty twenty, he lost

(07:26):
a multi billion dollar federal contract to Microsoft, I believe
when Trump was in office. So I don't think there's
any love loss between Bezos and Trump.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
I think basis for sure.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
I think Bezos, what if he's looking at this just
saying what if that this is a really hard decision,
and they don't want to swing either way as a
newspaper because the decision for some of us is tough.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
I don't think they should sway either way. I just
I think I have a problem. And we've been in
the news industry forever. I don't think news agencies should
endorse any entertainers are coming out of the woodwork. I
don't think someone's going to vote for someone because their
favorite singer or entertainer is backing a certain presidential candidate.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
In fact, sometimes I think it can do the complete opposite.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
I think it can as well.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
I know we'll know, I know then a week how
this thing all works out.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
I think I'm going to vote tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
You said you were going to go early. I like
to go the day of and I saw boots, I'm
not mine. Isn't super crowded? Is yours typically get really crowded?

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Though? Okay, yeah, so we'll see all right, guys Kosai,
when's the last time we've been to Kosai?

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Because you have an opportunity to go for free.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
Oh, we have some giveaways, some great giveaways, general admission
and the next Cosai after dark. So I think we
have two four packs of tickets to give away. And
then also on top of that, they have some really
cool stuff coming. Mindy, they have an upcoming opening of
t Rex the Ultimate Predator, which is American Museum of
Natural History exhibit. And I will tell you something called

(08:59):
Papa Try rolls over there right now that I pass
by the other day, and it's looking pretty fun for
little kids.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Before we go to break real fast, Jackie just text me,
she said, I agree with Mikayla. I had friends that
knew them, the Menendez brothers because she lived out in
California for a while and knew how bad the parents were.
I could never imagine, but I'm sure it was rough.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Yeah, really rough. You guys, thank you. Hot topics were
there were Cosign X. This is what matters on sixtent
