(00:06):
So Andrea, let me ask you, what is your favorite thing about back
to school time now or like nowand like when you were in school.
I think now it's having a moreconsistent schedule and I don't have to figure

(00:27):
out what my children need to doevery day. So I'm loving back to
school time right now. When Iwas going to school, I think just
the excitement around, like seeing yourfriends again, because I mean, you
saw your friends over the summer, but you didn't always see all of your

(00:49):
friends, especially when you were inelementary school and then even in high school
some of the people who you reallydidn't hang out with you. It's still
nice to see those people. Andof course getting a new back to school
outfit nice. Okay, all right, Yeah, I would definitely say I
agree with you, know, thatconsistency of scheduling. I mean, obviously

(01:15):
it's no secret that now I'm ateacher, so I have weirdly like I
have like two sides of a coinwith back to school because there's part of
me that back to school time isstressful because you know, as a teacher,
there's so many unknowns. It feelslike every year there's more and more
things that kind of get added tothe job and nothing gets subtracted, and

(01:38):
so there's a lot of stress, but I also still have what's kind of
cool about my job is kind ofwhat you're saying is like that fresh start,
and it's like it's cyclical, likethere's a beginning to the year,
there's an end to the year. You know, it starts over it's new
classes, new kids, you know. And then even for me being a

(01:59):
semester teacher, I have that allover again in January, which poses its
own stress, but it's also againlike you kind of get to like get
a fresh start. Yeah, SoI really like that, and definitely I
would agree with like structure because eventhough we had like some structure through the
majority of the summer with things thatAudrey was involved in and I was playing

(02:20):
like supermum, you know, workingon some grad school stuff and things like
that, but it definitely is differentthan when school starts and there's like a
very defined like I feel like forme, I'm the kind of person like
the more I have to do,the more I get done. It's yeah,
the more time I have, Iprocrastinate more. Uh huh yeah,
well yeah, for like two piecesin a pod. Yeah, I think

(02:46):
the exact same way. I actuallywas talking to my therapist about that,
like going, um, when Ihave too much time in my hands,
I just kind of don't do anythingbecause I don't know where to start.
So she's like helping me. Iactually have like a written out day planner.
Now yeah, it's like yeah, yeah, it's like the more time

(03:08):
you have it is like what youwaste more time I feel, and so
or at least I do. Andthen but then when I have like okay,
everything is like, all right, well I'm at school from this time
to this time, and then Ican put this here and this here,
it's suddenly like time almost has moremeaning because you're like, oh, yeah,
no, I don't have an infiniteamount of minutes. I've got to

(03:31):
only work with the windows of gotyou know. And so I do feel
like the busier I get, themore things I get done. So that's
kind of cool about back to school. And I would say for me,
it's never been big on the backto school outfit, probably because you know,
I don't know that we always wentback to school shopping, and I

(03:52):
guess I was probably excited about thatstuff when I was younger, but like
I am a school supply junkie,so it is still like school supplies are
my fricking crack. It is likeI am oh, like I am the
person that will look at every sizeof post it and I have to like

(04:14):
stop myself, like you don't needthe post it pad that's bigger than your
head because they're giant post its andyou're wondering what you could do with that,
you know. It's like I'm thatlike, oh, this is so
cool, I want to try it, you know, And I don't know
what's wrong with me. And Imean, I feel like school supplies just
get better and better every year. There's more players, there's more variety.

(04:36):
It's not just like yellow post It'snow you have you know, purple and
blue and orange, and you canhave one for every whim. I know.
It's yes, there are just somany cool things. So I think
that's what I look forward to itback to school. So clearly back to
school timing was some inspiration for ourmovie pick today, so we may as

(04:57):
well just like jump for it init all right, guys, welcome to
fourteen going on forty. This isMelissa and this is Andrea, and we
are two best friends that met inhigh school and revisit movies made during the
time we've known each other. Andsometimes we take super long breaks in our
podcast, just bounce right back in, so don't worry about that. On

(05:19):
today's episode, we're heading to HarringtonHigh School in Ohio, where there's a
problem with the faculty. Here's aquick description from IMDb. When Casey Connor,
Harrington High School's newspaper photographer, witnessesthe murder of a nurse and sees
her alive again, he decides toinvestigate the bizarre happenings. I like this

(05:41):
description because and I think I'd saythat because I was on another site,
so I think we've talked about thison the podcast before that. I use
the app Just Watch, and it'sthat's how I figure out where things are
streaming, like when I look upa movie and how can I find it?
And I also keep track of myshows or like movies I want to
watch on there. Yeah, andwhen I went on there, they have

(06:03):
a short description and I'm not surewhere, like what database it pulls from,
but it literally gave the whole dangstory away, and I was like,
well, this is a terrible plotline. If you've never seen this movie
because just told you the whole story. I was like, on this one,
IMDb's got it right, I'm herefor it. Well, I mean,
you can't give away the entire what'sthe point I'm watching the movie if

(06:26):
you know what's going to happen. And this is in that time period,
which, speaking of the release datewas November twelfth, nineteen ninety eight.
I mean, it's venturing into classicterritory. Oh god, you know these
nineties movies, Like it is soso wild to think that, Like there
are definitely people, you know, current teenagers that are starting to like get

(06:48):
into that or whatever that like they'venever seen it. And so I was
like, okay, all right,I kind of like this. At the
time it came out, we werenineteen and a sophomore year of college,
and we would have been still likein session at that time because it would
be a first semester before Thanksgiving break. I was at Disney okay, all

(07:12):
right, So we didn't see thistogether then, but I do remember I
feel like seeing it in the theater. I did not see this in the
theater, probably because I was workinga lot. It was holiday times at
Disney World, so working a lot, not a lot of free time.
I do remember seeing this, andI think it was either a rental or

(07:33):
like caught it on cable or somethinglike that, okay, because I remember
wanting to see it and then Ilike pulling it out and then being like,
oh, how come I didn't watchthis like in the theater but it
was right up my alley. Thatwould be why. Well, I will
say this is one of those moviesthat I'm starting to try to come up

(07:56):
with a name for it. MaybeI'll call it a cousin to Scream,
because it was like when Scream happened, suddenly studios were putting money into teenager
horror. Yeah, you know,it's like this what we like to call
that, like golden age of theteenage horror flick. Right. This was
definitely a result of the success ofScream. This got made well, and

(08:20):
it's also written by Kevin Williamson aswell so and he was apparently supposed to
direct this movie, but he wasdirecting teaching Missus Tingle. I think,
yes, which I feel like Idefinitely saw that when it came out,
but haven't seen it in so long. I don't really remember it. I
remember it not being really great. That's probably what is going on here of

(08:46):
why I don't remember it, becausethis one I've seen a few times now,
there were still stuff in it thatMy notes are so many notes because
I was oh yeah that, andoh yeah that. So that was pretty
cool about this. I liked thata lot. But definitely I saw it
in the theater. And this onedoes make it into the rotation. I
already owned it. This was inmy like horror movie rotation. Yes,

(09:09):
so I owned it. I gotit for Christmas, like, not this
past Christmas, but the Christmas before, and I specifically did not open it
because I wanted to watch it forthis and we keep on putting it off
and putting it off, and I'mlike, when it came up, I
was like, absolutely, I rippedthe plastic off the DVD. And luckily

(09:31):
I did that because I had thedigital code and it expires next month,
so oh nice. Okay, wellthen see all things aligned. Yes,
that's great, all right, Solet's just kind of jump into into the
movies. So it starts with afootball game, and right away we get

(09:52):
the coach. In the first scene, I just put swearing up a storm
and he hates everything. See soagro. My god, it's not even
a game, it's practice, Likethey're not even paying. Yes, it's
that's true. That's true. Yeahyeah, yeah, he's not even he
is like freaking out tis unnecessary?Yea um, but that is kind of

(10:18):
the point. And I also noticedright away on this viewing that I kind
of forgotten. I was like,oh yeah, yeah, yeah, he's
from Terminator too. He's he's theRobert Patrick, the other two Cyborg.
Yes, he's the T two right. So um and now Terminator two,
I remember was like it's for mewhen I was a kid. So I'm

(10:43):
going to make a statement here thatcould fire some people up hardcore, but
I kind of feel like for ourgeneration, Terminator two was our Godfather too.
It meanings it was. Yes,I think it's better than the first
one, our version of where thesequel almost eclipses the first one and you're

(11:03):
so into it and kind of canjust leave the first one alone and just
watch that one over and over andover again. But I definitely saw an
appreciated the Terminator too younger than Ireally appreciated what the Godfather series is.
I know that I saw The Godfatherwhen I was you know, younger,
but like and of course I'm I'min deep on the Godfather, like I'm

(11:26):
I'm not saying but it's the same. But yes, there is a parallel,
if you will, I agree,And I don't think that that is
a controversial statement. I think alot of people would say that T two
is better than T the original Terminator. And I mean as a god when
it Terminator came out, what likeninety one, ninety two something like that,

(11:50):
I feel like I was like elevenor twelve when it came agreed,
because I had, of course, like it had the most adorable like Edward
for long and it who I had, like the hugest crush boy. He
really kind of fell off the mapand after that, Yeah, whatever happened

(12:11):
with him, I might need tolook that up. I think I think
he went down into like a drugspiral and like too much fame, too
soon, too soon, Yeah, sad days. Yeah, yeah, Terminator
too manh Yeah, nineteen ninety one, you're right, So yeah, we
would have been you know, liketwelve years old when it came out,

(12:33):
so that that tracks like, Imean, it wasn't too crazy to have
seen that movie at that age.And again because it brings in the Edward
for Long, you know, characterof a young person. We identify with
that a lot. So it waslike, suddenly you had a reason to
really be you know, um emotionallyinvested in the main character versus the first

(12:54):
Terminator movie. So I totally kindof made a note of that. I
was like, oh, yeah, that's that's him. And then I was
like, I forgot Usher wasn't there. Oh my god. It turns out
that's his first movie. It wasfilm debut. So I don't I don't
know about you, but anytime Isee Usher in a movie, I just
go, uh yes, and shameon him for starting that nonsense because anyone

(13:18):
else that does this in their musicwhere they like say their own name,
it is so strange for me.I don't understand what's happening. But you
know, I'm sure it's um I'msure it works, and it's branding and
whatever. But and then UM,I put in here like we see from
the camera point of view that likesomeone is approaching the coach and he's kind

(13:39):
of like, what do you want? But we don't know who it is,
And then it cuts to a facultymeeting. So it's like after school.
At night, there's a faculty meetingand the principle is the actress Baby
New Earth, which is so funnybecause I've actually never thought about her name
except for the fact when I waslooking up the actors and her full name

(14:01):
is Beatrice and she goes by Babe. And again the planet's aligning. This
is my first time at school Ihave a student named Beatrice who goes by
Babe. And I was like,oh, this is like everything in the
universe was telling me I needed towatch the faculty fot I. Every time

(14:22):
I see her, I think ofLilith from Yeah, Cheers and Frasier for
sure. And she is that like, very distinctive voice, very distinctive face.
She's like one of those snow whiteswhere she's got the really really pale,

(14:46):
pale white skin but dark hair andthen rightfully so rocks a red lip
and it's like a snow white effect. So she's love it. She's pretty
awesome. But she's the principle, which I like. I like that that
it was female principle, and um, you know, she's no new computers,
no New York City field trip,no musical football, gets it all

(15:07):
like yeah, and how accurently.I was like, that's I mean,
this is supposed to take place inmy quote unquote football town, but um,
I would venture to say that it'sprobably relatable in lots of towns.
Yeah. But another old holy shitmoment that probably was my biggest one.

(15:30):
I completely forgot that missus Olsen isPiper Laurie from Carrie. Completely forgot she
was in this yeah, because I'mlooking at her going like who is that?
And how do I know her throughthe entire film? And then I
realized at the end when they saidher name, and I was like wait

(15:50):
a minute. And then I'm like, oh see, Like I got it
immediately her face and voice, It'slike immediately it's like that they're all gonna
laugh at you carry yeah, andlike, oh my god, it's her
because she is scary to me.So she for me was that nod to
horror that I probably would have beenlike, oh heck yes, like at

(16:11):
the theater, like oh yeah,Carrie's mom. Man. So they all
are leaving the methodiculty meetings ending andthe principal decides that she forgot her keys
and needs to go back in forher keys, and so she goes back
into the school, but everything's likeshut down, the lights are off or
whatever, and runs into the coach. Yeah. I love how when she's
running through this the computers. Iforgot how ginormous computers used to be.

(16:37):
That the monitors were like, Imean two feet deep. It was insane.
Depth is troubling, like now thateverything's a flat screen. When you
see that, you're like, wow, the real estate on the death of
the computer, Like it's so deep, and then you know the screen so

(17:00):
really small, right, like okay, yes, um. And when she
runs into the coach, you knowobviously something's wrong and he's just talking nonsense.
It's like, you look pretty.I need a pencil, Like what
is happening? He is the perfectperson, though, to play this,
because he is just one of thosepeople who I think if I ran into

(17:22):
him in real life, I'd belike, um, I need to leave
because you make me very uncomfortable.Yes, who. He probably is one
of those people where you know, you play one of these iconic villains and
then it's like you have to remindpeople that, like that's a character and
I'm a person and it's okay,I am nice. Yeah. I wonder

(17:45):
if he's like the nicest person becausehe just because that's what um, the
guy, oh my god, hisname is this gaming now that plays Draco
Malfi and the Harry Potter movies. He has to say that to kids,
like Draco is a character and I'ma really nice person and it's okay,
you know, because kids have thatlike sometimes with him. And so anyway,

(18:07):
the casting in this just at thestart, like is gold. I
mean you're right, like he isperfect. Piper Laurie is perfect, you
know, Baby New Earth is perfect, and it keeps getting better. So
he's clearly something's wrong with the coachand he ends up after she's like yeah,
she's trying to shut it down, like it's wrong with you, and

(18:30):
he stabs her through the hand witha pencil. That's a great visual,
and a chase happens. And thechase is another one of those scenes that's
like a nod to when he wouldrun in the terminator, Like it's like
the way he's coming down the hallway, I thought that was really interesting.
And then the principal gets all theway to the door and she can see

(18:52):
through the window Missus Olsen on theother side, this little old lady teacher
and oh help me, help me, and miss Olsen can't help her from
the outside it's locked, which evenin the moment, I was like,
but how how how did she getin? So like did they lock it
after? Like she went back in? Then who locked it? And it's

(19:14):
also it's also this weird like it'sjust a chained together door. So then
did she like squeeze herself through theopening? I'm not sure, I might
need to rewatch that. Well,it's padlocked, right, so maybe somebody
or she relocked it when she wentin. Maybe I don't know, but
like it was pad locking doors likethat a thing. I don't know.

(19:37):
Maybe I mean schools, you know, I mean this school definitely when they
show it throughout the movie is clearlypegged as like basically falling apart at the
scene, yeah, you know,so I paint and you know, everything
looks very worn. So missus Olsoncan't help her from the outside of the

(20:02):
door, and the coach is givingthese like major terminator vibes. And it
turns out missus Olson is a badguy too. That look when she gets
like when you know, she getslike she stabs her and she I always
wanted to do that okay, Sofrom the audience point of view, Principal
Drake at this point seems to bea goner. But of course we cut

(20:26):
to the next morning. So thisis what I like to call um world's
most laziest high school introduction movie. We have to have the all the kids
arriving in the parking lot scene, which, oh my, we gotta meet
the main kids somehow, and thisis the fastest and easiest. It's either
you driving and driving in the parkinglot, or you're in the lunchroom.

(20:51):
You gotta pick oh yes, allthe cafeteria tables for sure. So I
have in my notes two things beforewe get into like the actual scene and
what's happening in this plot. Numberone, can we talk about Josh Hartnet's
hair. That's my first note onthe scene. Is it? I would

(21:15):
think so. Josh Hartnett's hair, from what I understand, was, seems
like something It's like, is iton purpose? It's so upsetting? It
is it is? It's like it'sso bad it has to be on purpose
because there's no excuse for it.There's no excuse for his hair. It

(21:41):
looks to me like he's wearing abeanie and this is the edges that are
sort of flipping out, and that'sthe purpose smashed Like I don't understand.
He put the he put the haton, and his hair dried, like
he put a hat on when hishair was wet, and then he took
it off, and then the hairstyleright, and he drove with the windows
open so that the bottoms was flippingand so then it flipped upward and then

(22:06):
but the bangs are too short,so there's no flippies there, and it's
like, is it a bowl cut? Is it a flip like a flip
from the sixties? What is happening? Like, I don't know, but
here's the thing. It definitely wasa thing because then there were people that
thought this looked good and like triedto get this haircut back in the grunge

(22:27):
day's situation, and it's it's illadvised. I yes, but I feel
like it's I will say this though. The only thing I can give as
a positive thing about this era ofJosh Hartnet's hair is it felt to me
to be very authentically teenager, Likethis is the kind of shitty hair you

(22:48):
see on some teenage boys where whoknows what picture they showed to get the
haircut, but they don't style it. They go to they put a wet
hair under a beanie and then takeit off and it looks like that.
Yeah, pretty bad. So alsoanother hair note, just I came back
and kind of wrote it in thesame spot. Wow, the bangs.

(23:14):
There are so many bangs and they'reall very different, which is we've seen
bangs in some of the movies we'vewatched before, but I'm trying to say
the faculties bang variety, it mightbe something to put in its own category.

(23:34):
It's like, there's a lot ofbangs and they're all different. Some
of them start way back here atthe crown. Some of them are the
baby bangs. Some of them arecut so short. Is it a bang
or is it Josh Hartnet's hair?I don't know. Yeah, Like,
there's just so many variations of bangs. I've never I didn't realize, but
I remember at that time bangs whereI think I think I had bangs,

(23:56):
I may have had, I mayhave had forayed into some sort of random
Wow. That's a weird phrase,Yeah it is, But you know what,
we haven't ever seen bangs come backas strong as they were in the
eighties and nineties, and there's somebangs starting to happen. But you're right,
it's it's a very much because Ifeel like in Scream M Scream two,

(24:22):
because that was came out pretty soon. It was like soon after this
one, because Scream the first famousfor Scream two has the famous Courtney Cox
horrifying things like the horrifying like miniand that was at the same kind of
a time, because um, there'sone of the characters coming up, one
of the teachers has the mini bangs. But I remember at the time,

(24:45):
you know, that was like normal, so many people, more people had
bangs than didn't. In hairstyles,I feel I feel like a lot of
it was just a product of I'mgoing to trim my bangs at home.
I don't know. I sort offeel like it evolved from the heavily banged
hairstyles of the eighties that were thebangs were part of the layers and they

(25:08):
were teased, and then when youwent to grow them out, you kind
of couldn't figure out how you weregoing to look with no bangs, So
instead you grew some of them outand you left like some bangs behind because
you weren't doing the big teas bangwhich you had some face framing situation,
but that it was like really commonfor people to have that versus you know,

(25:33):
just totally long no bang hair. And it is like it is crazy
in this movie because to me thatfelt like a real throwback, Like I
was like, wow, yeah,so much amazing nineties fashion in this movie.
It's so it's pretty good. Wedo get the main cast of characters.
So we have Josh hartnett Is Zekewho is the bad boy, and

(25:56):
then Casey who's the photo nerve, right, which is Elijah Wood. Forgot
about that too. I know,he's such a little baby face in this
such a baby face. I waslike, like a little cherub like he's
just so like angelic looking it is. It's almost like one day he'll be

(26:17):
like a little baby hobbit. Thenwe have Delilah who's the popular bitch.
Yeah this is this actress's first movie. Jordana Brewster Yeah, and then and
oh wait, I mean again myfavorite thing the sweater tiede the tide right

(26:41):
around sweater back is it? Isit a high school movie? If someone
doesn't have a sweater tighter, thinkso? I think that you know,
otherwise you don't know that they're they'rethe preppy one. Correct. Also,
I work in a high school.I've been to a lot of high schools.
I've yet to see this in thewild. Okay, just saying,
but noted point very much. So. Then we have the queen of this

(27:07):
movie, in my opinion, stokely, stokely goth girl played by head bitch
herself, Clia Duval. I fuckinglove her with everything in my soul.
Is so goddamn great in everything she'sin. I love her so much.
I was thinking about her. Iwas like, she not only has resting

(27:29):
bitch face, she has active bitchface, very active. It's on purpose,
and it is animated to suit exactlywhat she's trying to say to you
without any words. She is seriouslymy soulmate, Like I, I have
never felt more seen than looking ather in this movie. Like yes,

(27:52):
yes, Clia Duval, you ownedthis role and you've owned everything you've done
since. She's great. She's sogood. My notes will continue to praise
her as we go on. Thenwe see stand the jock and Mary Beth
the new girl. Also, she'sthe hot blonde, so she gets too

(28:12):
yeah, the new girl and alsothe hot blonde and she's southern, you
know, she's like a little southernbell. Yes, she was that Mary
Louise Hutchinson she called. She introducesherself to everybody with her full name.
Wait, Mary Beth Louise, MaryBeth Louise Hutchinson or something like that.
Yes, yes, So I alsonoticed. So you've got this parking lot

(28:34):
and they're and they're doing the introductionsof the characters, and then there's like
general shit going on around the parkinglot, and I'm like, there's like
a minor fender bender, has somelike raging drivers pulling each other out of
a car and fist fighting, andI can't tell if they're moms or students.

(28:55):
There's a lot going on in thebackground. And then there's like the
couple that just like beats on eachother incessantly. Oh, yeah, we'll
get into them. We're going tointroduce them next. There's all these violent
shots on the way into school, and I'm like, poor Casey by Elijah
Woods character is just getting reamed fromall angles. It's just it's not good.

(29:15):
And so we know this school isa struggling school, is what we
might say. And then like you'retalking about the couple and all that.
When I went over to IMDb anddiscovered the actual character names we have going
on here, fuck you boy, fuck you girl, fuck Up number one

(29:36):
and fuck Up number two, Andonce again, I'm going to give props
to this movie and say all thousandsuch percent relatable because you absolutely give people
names like this food it's so funny. Fuck Up one, fuck Up two,
fuck you girl, fuck you boy. And the best part, I

(29:56):
thought, what a nod to um. Fuck Up number one is Danny Masterson
from that seventy show, and thenfuck Up number two is Wiley Wiggins throw
back to our Days and Confused.Oh I didn't even realize. Oh yeah,
I could totally see it. Iwas like, even from his like
side shot, I'm like that thatkid from Days and Confused, And I'm

(30:18):
like, it's sure Stinkin is becauseyou know him in his weird move with
a hold in his brow and Daysand Confused. I was waiting for him
to do that. He doesn't.Um. So in the boy's bathroom,
Zeke is selling fake IDs to fuckUp one and fuck Up two, Yes,
and we get an intro to scathis um. These like big pens

(30:41):
full of white powder that are drugsthat he sells. That's just what you
want. Like and it's called scat, Like I mean, it's literally called
shit. Uh huh. I thinkthis might be uh Zeke's bran and a
humor his character. Huh. Theydon't even really know what scat is.

(31:04):
And I'm not going to pretend likeI'm that outdoorsy, but I did.
That was not lost on me thatscat is a shit and that's what's going
on here. But also you knowit is it's like I remember at the
time. You know, it's oneof these things where you're like, Okay,
of course he's the bad boy,but he's also the main character and

(31:29):
we're supposed to like him. Butlike for me, this is a very
unlikable quality, like you're selling tonot cool. But all right, so
back in the faculty lounge, JesusChrist Selma high as in this movie,
I know, I totally forgot thatshe was the nurse, you know,
probably because it's such a minor character. And at the time, I mean,
she wasn't like who you know,we were like we probably recognized her,

(31:52):
but not quite to like it's freakingSelma high k dude. So she's
the nurse and she's got a cold, and then well why not raise you
one with Salmahayak and give you aJohn start, which I was like,
I had literally stopped it and Davewas watching. I was like, let's
fucking John Stuart. And then andthere's fam Key Jansen. I was like,

(32:15):
right, did they just walk aroundHollywood and say, come here for
a minute, just for a minute. I need you to do a couple
of scenes and we're good, justa couple of minutes of your time.
So John Stewart again, huge terminatorreference at right. Furlong's his teacher name,
mister Furlong. And then fam KeyJansen plays miss Burke and she's like

(32:37):
the timid young teacher, nerdy girlteacher. And my favorite line in this
entire introduction that speaks to everything Ifeel sometimes about school in the school year,
when Salmahiak someone says why don't yougo home? And she's like,

(32:57):
I'm saving my sick days for whenI feel better. And I just wrote
in all caps exactly, yeah, that's I have that written down too.
I was like, that is prettymuch how everybody feels, like, why
would I waste my six days whenI'm sick? Oh man, We see
a water cooler and the coach isdrinking cup after cup of water, and

(33:17):
the other teachers are kind of commentingon it, like what is that guy
doing now, right, because clearlyhe doesn't have a whole lot of friends
with his rage monster attitude, Andmissus Olsen walks in with like brand new
hair and a snazzy, snapping newfirst day of school suit. Yeah,
looking real good. And she walksup to the coach and joins him at

(33:39):
the water cooler and he's like, you look pretty today, and you know,
we all know that something's not rightthere, So now we have to
go to class with all the peopleso timid. Miss Burkes, she's the
English teacher, and she's discussing Crusoe'sGreatest Fear and Zeke is like talking to
her and looking at her like she'sdinner and yeah, also listening to her

(34:08):
speed like she starts at the beginningof those and I just I'm like,
how did she get this job?Like they must have been really hard up
because she she doesn't seem like she'svery comfortable in uh speaking to not at
all. All these children at thefront of the class, like how did

(34:29):
she manage to get through all ofher like student teaching and school and when
she can barely form words. Imean, maybe there was a mass teacher
shortage and they started hiring people thatdidn't have degrees and couldn't do the job.
Oh wow, so far from realitythat you're right, could be that

(34:52):
could only be okay, okay, maybe she was in the military, true,
or married to someone in the militaryqualified as well. So we discover
in this scene that Zeke, ourbad boy, is also a genius.

(35:15):
He's brilliant. Yes, of course, of course he is. He just
doesn't apply himself. You know.I gotta say it really made and I
don't know what it was about ithitting me with this particular movie and this
particular scene and this particular character.Oh my Jesus, we did not stand
a chance. As young women growingup watching movies, this kind of shit

(35:40):
is constantly put in front of you, like, don't worry. The bad
boy who sells drugs could also besuper smart and just like yeah, and
have like super wealthy appearance, andit would all be fine. You should
totally want him, like no,like all right, So Stan the Jock

(36:02):
tells Delilah, who's his girlfriend, she's like head cheerley or that he's quit
in football, and she basically callshim stupid and that he won't get into
college without a football scholarship. AndI just wrote, she is an asshole.
Oh yeah, I said, Wow, she's just a social climbing bitch.
Well, and just the fact thatshe's so matter of fact with him,

(36:22):
like you're dumb, I'm dating youbecause that's the social hierarchy. And
she actually says those words, andit's like you're you're throwing your whole life
away and all that I know. And I was like, how dare my
boyfriend want to better himself and bea better person and apply himself? How

(36:43):
dare he? Yeah? I waslike, wow, jeez, man's harsh,
don't you know. He's always supposedto be one dimensional, one dimensional
football player. That's it, That'sright. So then we had traveled into
mister Tate's class. Now mister Tateis the history teacher, and we have
already discovered that he hides a flaskin the faculty lounge. And this is

(37:05):
yet another thing where I had ateacher in high school that I was pretty
convinced that that wasn't coffee in thatmother And this spoke to that memory real
hard thinking about probably. Yeah,so mary Beth talks to stokely in this
class. So she's new girl,And I just wrote Clara Duval's stink face

(37:30):
is unrivaled no one. I challengethe world to throw at me someone who
does a better stink face than CliaDuval. She just doesn't need to say
a damn word. Her face isgoing to do the talking. Well,
I know, and I know they'retrying their best to make her look undesirable

(37:52):
in this. I mean, she'sa very I would guess you would call
her unconventional looking person. But Iwas like, why did they make her
hair greasy? Like I don't thinkshe's unwashed. But yeah, but remember
though, that was kind of athing now, I guess. So,

(38:13):
yeah, it was the era ofthe especially if you're were rocking a short
haircut like her, because I'm gonnaI'm gonna bring back a word that you
probably haven't well, I don't knowyou have a short haircut, so maybe
this hasn't left you. But umpomade hair products, Oh yes, and
the vastly different types of pomade andthe kind of terrible results that could come

(38:36):
from that. Yes, that kindof had people looking like that, but
because of that, there were peoplethat actually were looking like that on purpose,
Like it was meant to look peacy, but it really looks as Yeah,
yeah, I almost wonder if thatwas the idea. But I agree
with you. They are trying tomake her look like goth girl, grungy.

(39:00):
She's hard and you know, butyeah, the hair is very,
very unwashed looking. Mary Beth givesthe new girl no friend's speech, and
Delilah comes over to start some shitwith Stokely and starts calling her a violent
lesbian and all this stuff. Andthey never really in the movie address why

(39:24):
there is this level of animosity fromDila towards her. No. I mean,
we can all accept that Delilah issupposed to be the bitchy popular girl,
yeah and just doles some shit out, but wow, I mean it
is like I wonder if there wassomething in the script that was like supposed
to make it so that they hadthis really terrible because she's just really mean.

(39:46):
You would think that like she wouldjust be insignificant to her and she
wouldn't even bother with the vehemence towardsher, because if you like in Mean
Girls, there was with Regina joOrge and um, what's uh Lindsey Lohan's
character, No, no, no, no, no, no, oh

(40:07):
yes, yes, oh my god, I remember. It's because we have
too many other names. But thegirl that is also like being accused of
being a lesbian. Yeah, likebut you find out the backstory, how
about they used to be friends andthen you know, so that is more
understandable. But yeah, she isjust I mean, unless because like Delilah

(40:31):
is also in this cast of characters, so it's like, you are right,
it's really hard to like her.It is, and I guess that's
kind of that's okay. In themovie, we don't have to like her,
so that's kind of interesting. Butyeah, it's just it's a really

(40:52):
you know, okay, she comeson really strong as this really asshole person.
So all this interaction is happening inthe class and then we see Casey
being a loner and being kind ofoutside taking pictures and looking for stuff,
and he has a creepy interaction witha coach on the field and he finds
something in the grass that he likepockets and wants to bring into class.

(41:15):
So he ends up in mister Furlong'sclass, who is now is a science
teacher, okay, and he bringshim in this thing and he's like,
I found something in the football field. And Mary Beth at the same time
has another like pushy interaction with Stokelyabout meeting her first lesbian and like,
well, let's be lab partners andblah blah blah. It's very pushy.

(41:37):
And I mean Clia duval I putin here is all of us like just
looking at her like me alone,I do not need any of this,
yea. So there's the there's thisscene with the microscope, so they're looking
at this organism. It's an oceandwelling. More organism, they think,

(41:59):
and Ze is just being like superbrilliant again because he knows all of it
and you know, but yet he'srepeating senior year. Yeah, yes,
he's just he's just gonna be brilliantfor school. I'm going to keep extolling
some more compliments for the Stokely characterbecause Usher says, Stokely, maybe it's

(42:20):
from your planet, and Stokely comesback with blow me blood fart, And
I'm going to credit my vehement supportof watching television with captions on, because
I don't know if I caught thatshe did, like, didn't blood fart?
I miss it. I did notwatch this one with captions? Blow

(42:45):
me, blood fart? Is thatsomething she ad lived? Was that in
the script where that's an insult?I don't know if I would have come
up with, yeah, fart, that's a very god descriptive visual though.
I mean, well, I hopeI can tuck it in the back of
the brain and use it in thesentences something so naturally, there's this kind

(43:07):
of shoving scene and a glass ofwater spills on this organism and it comes
to life. So they throw itin the aquarium. Okay, it's rejuvenating
or whatever, and the teacher glovesup because he wants to feel the outside
of it because it looks like itchanged texture a little bit once it rehydrated,
right, And I just put,um, no, that thing looks

(43:31):
like a motherfucking parasite. Alright, stick your hands in there with nothing between
you and it but a latex glove. I think that it replicates. And
he still doesn't jerk his hand out. Right. Sorry, I'm sorry,
but that is not normal. Haveyou seen Gremlins? Professor for long?

(43:52):
What is happening here? And itreplicates, I just put it replicates,
gets piranha teeth and bites him.Of course, so he's going to call
the university, call the hospital, right, because I feel like such a
weird alien thing that I've never seenbefore and it might be a new species

(44:12):
just bit me. I'm sorry, let me call the university. I might
be dying. Call the university too. But someone needs to be observing what
happens to you after being bit bythat thing? Right? But okay,
So now we're in the swimming pooland the coach is there and I don't
know if it's swim team after schoolor it's gym class and they're doing swim.
But Stan tells the coach that hewants to quit the football team.

(44:34):
And it's like before a big gamethe next night, you know, or
whatever, And the coach has avery creepy kind response, and we all
know something's very very wrong based onhis original personality of anger, anger anger,
right, Like, he's not throwingstand into the pool trying to drown

(44:57):
him for fucking up his Do youknow what else? I think was really
interesting in this because it transitions intothe locker room and we see Usher's character
is a total dick to Casey, like just a bully, right, and
that never really changes in this movie. I don't know why. In my
mind I was like not picturing Usheras being one of the like jerks,

(45:22):
like that he would always play likea good kid. Yeah, because he
just has that like persona. Iknow, but he's a jerk through this
whole thing. Yeah, Like Idon't didn't remember that about him. So
Stan, you know, he goesto shower and we see in the camera
shot the world's scariest feet. They'rehuman, but just so just and I

(45:51):
mean it's there's like hammer toe andI mean this poor Coles. I mean,
I know it's just this poor actress, like and she's so old.
I'm sure that's what my feet willlook like when I'm girl. God.
I mean, look, I couldcall out for all the thoughts and prayers
for my feet, but I'd bepound in the pavement every day at school.

(46:13):
I know the future does not lookbright, but I will say that
this is the craziest part of it. Like I will say this scene.
They started at the feet and theyfigured out how to just exponentially increase the
level of terror, because yes, there's the crazy feet you what's coming towards

(46:37):
you? He rinses his face offof soap, and it's a teacher and
he's naked, horrifying. Yes,she's kind of disintegrating even in the face
that something's clearly very wrong. Andshe just keeps walking towards you, mumbling
things. I can't imagine being anymore scared if I were in that situation.

(47:00):
Right, you are in the mostvulnerable position. You are completely naked
and completely vulnerable. They were like, no, no, we got you.
Now He's going to be kind andkind of hold her, like,
oh my god, are you okay? And a whole chunk of her scalp
comes off in his hand. Itwas like, oh, never mind,

(47:23):
it can get worse. Then yourteacher's hugging you naked in the shower,
okay, okay, Oh yes,I feel like my teacher just melted in
front of me. She's pretty muchand she says something to the effect of,
you know, they want everyone isthe only thing we really kind of

(47:44):
come away with, so creepy, ask missus Olsen. Carrie's mom tells Stan
that that teacher had cancer and themeds she was on made her like that
and was affecting her. And youknow it's because Casey was all so in
the locker room and Stan screamed forCasey to get help. So it's,
yeah, it's standing Casey getting talkedto in the office like Okay, you're

(48:07):
gonna go home, but let's let'snot talk a lot about it. Yeah,
she had a medical issue, youknow, let's just keep it quiet.
Casey sees the coach out the windowand he's just standing on the football
field totally still staring into space withall the sprinklers on him like a real
fucking weirdo. And Casey's like zoomingin with his camera lens, like must

(48:32):
see him what I'm seeing? Uhhuh, and uh it's not good.
So Zeke the brilliant one o umsells bootleg nudy movies out of the back
of his car, fake enough,like I mean they're like it's they're like
Jennifer Love Hewett, Nev Campbell,Right, yeah, I wonder what kind

(48:55):
of like a crap cutting job though? Those were right. So miss Burke
the timid teacher confronts him and tellshim he's got to stop this, like,
stop selling all this paraphernalia and youknow whatever. And Zeke looks at

(49:15):
her again like dinner and offers herlaxatives to sell her laxatives, and then
condoms cherry flavored condoms, and that'swhen she lets it out that he's a
fifth year senior repeating all this andthis is a very unlikable moment for Zeke,

(49:38):
Like it's really shitty the way heis, and like it's I don't
know. I just was like, huh, it's very like, um,
it's just very mean spirited. Yes, yes, which I think it's it's
interesting because we are very clearly supposedto like Zeke, right, but they're

(50:00):
so it's kind of interesting that that'sI mean, I'm not saying that this
is a movie masterpiece, but thatis kind of interesting when you watch as
many of these high school movies andbreak them down like we have now in
doing this you know podcast together.I think that was sort of interesting to
me that we're definitely he's our maindude. We're supposed to like him.

(50:21):
We're supposed to think he's kind ofcool. He might have some poor qualities,
but it will be something that wecan forgive because of circumstance or something
like that. That's not what thisis. This is just like you said,
like, it's just mean, meankids. So Delilah and Casey do
a walk and talk. So sheneeds a front page story because she's also

(50:45):
the editor of the school paper. And they sneak into the faculty lounge because
she's decided she's going to get somedirt on a teacher or find something,
right, which, okay, soof course someone's entering and they have to
hide in the closet, and ofcourse that closet has the convenient slats that
you can peek through. Yes,I don't know how many closets you have

(51:09):
available to you in which you canpeek through those sets, but well,
okay, it's just so useful. My parents had like a slatted things,
but they first of all did notmove, and second of all, when
you were in there, you couldbarely see through them, which I can

(51:29):
kind of see the application in somelike clothing closets, and that there would
be airflow so that your close kindof get that like mustiness of being stored.
I mean, I don't know Imade that up right now on the
spot, but that sounds like whyokay, okay, So of course they

(51:50):
are hiding in this closet and theteachers enter, and it's the coach and
missus Olsen, and they head overto the water cooler and she takes a
cup of water and just throws itin her phrase, I lift out loud.
But then how terrifying would that beto see that? Well, I
did write in my notes. Maybethat's what I need to be doing since

(52:13):
my water consumption is the stuff ofhorror movies right now, now that we're
back to school. It is likeI start the morning with a hot cup
of coffee. Then I've been takinglike the giant yetti cup like that you've
made me, yeah, and it'sfull of ice and ice coffee. And
then I try to drink one teenywater bottle between before I let myself have

(52:35):
one of those cokes with coffee init. Oh, she like the dark
bund because that's my afternoon pick meup. And then I'm really surprised when
I'm basically peeing caramel syrup. Youknow, it's it's pretty bad. So
maybe I just need to walk overto the water fountain and just sposh hopefully
by by osmosis. It will it'llget in there somehow, And so they

(53:00):
talk about basically the kids over here, the two of them talking about the
heat getting to missus Brummel, theold lady that had the episode in the
shower and that she didn't make it. And so incomes the nurse Samahiak.
She's looking for meds. She's huntingfor all the cold medicine in her purse.
Again relatable, that's me layer atall, Like what else can I

(53:22):
layer on top of this that doesn'tyou know, cause a problem commingling.
She enters it and basically she getsapproached by the coach and he kind of
bumps her so that she slams theslats shut. So now the kids can't
really see what's happening at first, but the coach I just put basically spits

(53:44):
a parasite in her ear Oh prettygrody. Yeah, But I like if
any of those like earwig kind oflike yeah, I mean that that hits
the the HEBGB buttons on me,I'm like the that's like my worst week
or something crawling into my brain Likeoh pretty bad. And so this all

(54:07):
happens and they definitely like the kidsare not subtle enough. They're freaking out.
They get found and they do apretty great uh bum rush escape situation
and hummel right past these teachers andstart running out. Well also because they
see that, and then they getspooked. And then uh, the old

(54:28):
lady, the teacher who was missHarper was her name, the one from
the shower, Yeah, she's missusBrummel, Miss Brummel. She comes falling
out of the corpses in her closet. You're right, you're right. So
then the other teachers here that, and but yeah, I feel like,

(54:51):
wow, they did they really? You know, Casey comes at the coach
with a broom and Delilah just powersthrough, and I know it's like someday
he'll go on a great quest witha ring and have to use some weapons
and fight for his life. Soanyway, basically, the kids escape and

(55:15):
they try to tell the principle likewhat's going on, and that the faculty
have been converted into something because they'retrying to explain it and it sounds bananas,
yeah, and so of course noone believes them, and Delilah pieces
out in dishes Casey and leaves himat the school to deal with it.

(55:36):
Yeah, because now it's like, you know, they get his parents,
and the parents and the cops showup because he's saying, the teacher's dead
and her body was in the closet. Yeah, and they go to find
it and it's like one of thoseCPR mannequins. Yes, resuscitation, Annie,
that's right, that's right. Theprinciple does just such a like the

(55:59):
this is just so ridiculous. Surewe can go in. I mean the
way she delivers that, and it'sjust like and it's so sinister because we
thought she was dead, uh huh, and you know that she's converted too,
and she is just like the mostreasonable sounding person and like, this
is crazy. I have to askyou about resuscitation. Annie. Did you

(56:20):
ever take a CPR class where youhad to do resuscitation, Annie, Yes,
because they don't use that now inthe CPR trainings, Like so I
did too when I was younger.I took a CPR class and we had
resuscitation, Annie. But then nowwhen we do CPR, they actually give
you like a smaller torso and eachstudent like gets their own so that you

(56:45):
get more practice and everyone's not usinglike resuscitation. Annie. But I remember
like there. That was the firstCPR I ever did was with that,
yeah, because I think I didone in high school and then I did
wanting Yeah college too, and itwas on like a CPR dummy, like
a full like I don't know ifit was like full size, but it

(57:07):
was, but it was like whereit had a like more of like a
wig and a face and all that. So like now when we hold the
CPR classes at school, the likeindividual ones they give you, like I
said, it's kind of like ahollow torso and like a face with like
with no eye, Like it's likea mannequin head with no eyes or anything,

(57:28):
and it's just gray. And likeyou get your own kit with them,
oh with like the mouth and thething, right yeah, and then
they have it's really cool, atleast the fire department that does it with
us. They also have a setof the babies so that you get to
practice doing like the chest compressions withyour fingers. But it's not like them.

(57:51):
They definitely just don't even I meanthey barely look like they look kind
of like a gray mannequin. Andso when I saw the resuscitation Annie,
it just like brought that memory backI'm like, oh, yeah, I
took that CPR class ones that likehad that. Yeah for sure. Okay,
So then basically all these excuses aregiven and it makes sense, so
nobody believes Casey. Yeah. Well, and they also said didn't they didn't

(58:15):
they say that, um, nurseHarper, Oh, she suffers from grandmaa
seizures. So that's why you know, the coach they were helping her because
she had Because basically she's lying onthe floor and then she's in the hallway
like a few minutes later. Ohsure, and you know it's um.

(58:35):
I love when Casey's parents bring themhome and they're searching his room. Are
you on drugs? So they're lookingfor drugs and the moms like the dad's
really the one searching, which,by the way, the dad is so
perfect. I don't I can't rememberhow I know him from so many things,
but he is that Christopher McDonald andhe's like one of those actors where

(58:58):
like I don't really know his name, but you know his face from being
in things, and so he's awesomeas the dad. And it's like he's
searching and the mom's just standing inthe doorway, like check the textbook spines,
they hide drugs in the textbook spines. Check for this, like she's
just selling him from the side, like and then he, I will say,

(59:22):
Casey's parents go Melissa Vanderlin style like, oh really, because they take
his phone, they cut off theinternet, they even take his boombox,
no music, and then mom saystake his porn and to porno magazines under
the bed, which how horrifying that, you know. And then Casey like

(59:44):
is locked in his room kind ofand he starts to sneak up the window
and he sees missus Olsen and thecoach and the principle while standing there staring
at his house, which and thenhe rightly falls off the roof. I
sort of love this because it islike, yeah, that's basically how that
would go. Yeah, like youwould get so surprised that you'd fall right

(01:00:07):
out the window and like shit, now you're you're in the lawn. However,
it ends up being like they weren'teven there, Like I don't know
if I don't know if it wassupposed to be like he's just having this
like imagine maybe I mean, he'sthe kid's been through a lot, right,
I mean, maybe he's just that'skind of where I was a little
bit confused because it's like they vanish, and I was like, I don't

(01:00:30):
think they're not like I mean, they're not super fast, right, yeah,
so I think it was that supposedto be that like maybe yeah,
like Casey just almost it was hehallucinating. Imagine. Um, So Casey
the next morning, his dad ismaking him go back to school and he
is pleading, like, do notmake me go, and he still makes

(01:00:52):
them go anyway. So now poorCasey proves that the little nerd boy has
to be the bravest one of everyoneand walk in into this situation where no
one believes him. He knows it'sterrible and something's wrong. And as he's
walking, the coach starts walking upto his dad's car, and like,
Casey kind of has like that, well, now they're gonna get my parents

(01:01:15):
right now I can't go home?Yeah yeah, Like Casey's gonna have nowhere
safe to go. But what Idid notice is when coach is walking up
and he's like mister Connor, andI was like, oh my gosh,
it's just like a terminator. Two. The main character is John Connor,
like all them two references I mustneed to watch Terminator two next. So

(01:01:37):
Delilah and Casey meet in the bathroomand she's like wearing glasses, which she
says is like she's trying to goincognito and a ponytail, you know,
glasses and a ponytail because no onewould be able to recognize her. She's
doing the whole Clark Kent bit.Sure no one will find you then,
but she's like, they're after meand the faculty longe. I will say

(01:02:00):
this part I was kind of dying. Is now all water, like water
cooler jugs, cases of water, water everywhere, and the coffee pot is
bone dry. I'se my nightmare. This is my nightmare. I'm trying to
get through school. I love it. I just have dramatic water drinking,
like everybody has got their bottles ofwater and they're just slowly jugging it.

(01:02:25):
And it's also very ominous, likewho would have thought that drinking water would
be so scary? I will sayit doesn't scare me, but sometimes I
do feel that is that a littlebit how it feels when everyone around me
is like, oh, drinking theirwater or like, gotta drink my water,

(01:02:45):
blah blah, blah, and I'mlike okay, okay, I hear
you. I know I'm supposed todrink the water. I got it,
damn. So Standing Stokely are talkingin the next scene about Stand quitting the
team, like she's whoa you are, like right before a game and they're
in the history class with the guythat was drinking out of a flask.

(01:03:07):
Well, he's now suddenly straight lacedmister business and assigns a living history assignment
write down every living member of yourfamily. Oh yeah, that's not creepy.
Yeah now, oh man, Iwas like woof, and his like
the intensity in his like eyes, that's just starting with who lives in your

(01:03:29):
house. It's like, oh my, So now we finally get what we
knew was going to happen, whichis the Marybeth and Zeke Hute. See
they meet each other. She's thehot blonde new girl and little Southern bell
and he's bad boy and it's youknow, oh oh wait. Before we

(01:03:52):
move to that scene, on theprevious scene with Stand and Stokely, they
have this whole little interaction right whereit's like he's like, oh because he
quits football, yeah, and he'slike, oh, I'm just tired of
being you know, everybody thinks I'monly so good at like sports, and

(01:04:17):
I've always been good at all that, and I just want to try something
hard and you know, do somethingdifferent. And I just was like I
just wrote, oh, tired ofbeing privileged and special? Oh so say
I mean, it just was likeone of those things where you're looking at
it going, oh, you poorthing. Well, it's one of those

(01:04:39):
things where you're like, it's reallynot a big problem for like, right,
that you have to be this dramaticabout like, oh, everybody's just
always expecting me to be this greatathlete. I think that it would have
made a better case for this storylinebecause I think having him quit is you

(01:05:03):
know, they kind of need that, Yeah, and for him to sort
of become an outsider to get caughtup with our like ragtag group here.
Yeah, but I think it wouldhave been interesting for him to have the
like I want to quit because I'mtired of all this attention focused on me,

(01:05:24):
Like it's such a great thing, but the coach is such a fucking
asshole and abusing me all the timewith abusive and like I don't almost like
days and confused, like I don'twant to do this anymore, you know.
Oh, hold on, I'm beinginterrupted here. What yes, Dad
can do it? Just tell himto do one like one turn. Apparently

(01:05:50):
I'm the only one who can tightenNate's retainer, so everybody's you know,
oh Nate needs his retainer tightened.I'm like, can dad can do it?
Try the other parents. I meanhe used to have one, Like,
I'm sure he can figure out howto like turn a screw. It's

(01:06:11):
that are Nate could do it himself, like you've seen me do it enough
times. But yes, whatever,so where were we? Yes? So
definitely I think that Stan's quitting isvery dramatic and very um it's like a
they're trying to make it seem likeit's a problem, but it's not very
strong, right, I mean,I think it's still a cute scene between

(01:06:34):
the two of them because you're,you know, like, oh, you're
going to be an outcast like menow, which not really but they tried.
Yeah I agree, And then umso Mary bethan Zeke have their little
cute see like they're they're meeting andinteracting and in the hallway Stan and Stokely

(01:06:59):
see kids like waiting in line togo into the principal's office, and I
was like, there are actual visiblegame boys being played in the line.
I couldn't believe it, Like,oh my god. Dave literally goes,
wow, that's a lot of flannelin this line. It's just like it's

(01:07:24):
a feel and someone who had likea red game Boy and you could see
the gray cartridge and then had likeearbuds headphones plugged in, and I was
like, oh, wow, thatis amazing to see in a movie,
Like it's just the normal, likeit was the normal thing at the time

(01:07:45):
that was available, so stokely kindof like peeks in to see and somebody's
like, yeah, the nurse isgiving ear exams, and we all know
what's really happening, right, Soour main kids are basically used. They're
noticing weird things, like weird thingsacross the whole student body, weird things
with the teachers, like our mancrew is noticing some things. And the

(01:08:09):
fuck you girl slaps her fuck youboyfriend and normally they have a very dramatic
relationship hence their names, because allthey do is yell fuck you at each
other and have fights and he hasno reaction. Yes, and Zeke sees
this and he's like, huh, that's weird, and he's just noticing all

(01:08:31):
these and then fuck up number oneand fuck up number two, who we
saw buying fake IDs earlier now wantto buy some more scat, which Zeke
happily sells them, but then theyget really aggressive, asking to buy everything
he's got right, and they alsoget very like robotic, yeah do you

(01:08:54):
have more? Very weird? Where'smore? Is there more in your car?
Maybe you've got more? And he'slike, okay, this is really
odd. Yeah, yeah, hisinstincts are good. I do like.
So Mary Beth's outfit is also avery nineties outfit. She's got the cute

(01:09:15):
like sun dress and she's got thesweater tight around her waist, which is
acceptable, and then she's got likethe chunky Doc Martin boots, so she's
got that real sweet little dress withI was like, wow, that is
per that is what that is ninetiesright there for sure. And then miss

(01:09:36):
Burke walks up to this hole interactionand she's in what I call hot girl
garb. She's suddenly wearing a redtop and makeup and her hair is kind
of breezy, you know, andshe's suddenly hot girl, miss Burke,
and she is throwing these incredibly meaninsults at Zeke, now swearing at him,

(01:09:58):
insulting him, and he's kind ofthrown Yeah, I mean, yeah,
well wouldn't you be if your teacherall of a sudden started screaming at
you? And absolutely, but Imean in reality she sort of flipped the
script. Yes, I absolutely agree. The way he kind of was talking

(01:10:20):
to her, I mean, itwasn't quite the same, but clearly she's
just being really really aggressive. Andthen Casey and Stokely we cut to in
the library. So now Casey's like, listen, there's something wrong with the
faculty. There's it's that that thingwe found in science class. It was

(01:10:44):
some kind of a parasite. Ithink it's related to aliens. It's taking
over their bodies. Like he isreally throwing the whole theory out there,
and Stokely he's like, uh huh, yeah, okay, you know,
and she brings up like what areyou trying to say? Like this is
you're basically saying the plot of invasionof the body snatchers and are you saying

(01:11:04):
they're pod people? And Casey's kindof like well, maybe the X Files
is right. Yeah, that soundsa good way to put it. Yeah,
so Stokely kind of entertains this lineof thinking of like, well,
okay, if what you're saying isyour theory, you know, because he's
like, okay, well, whatif it was true, how would it

(01:11:26):
go? And she says how anInvasion of the Body Stanchers they had pods,
and then in puppet Masters, whichis another fictional story, there were
parasites, and so she's kind ofdrawing these parallels. So this is when
we actually hear the words like theInvasion of the Body Snatchers. And I
am a huge fan of Invasion ofthe Body Snatchers. This is one that's

(01:11:50):
like super in my rotation. Ilove it a lot. I actually watched
the black and white one as likea comfort movie all the time. You
know, I've I've seen it,but I haven't seen it in a while.
I mean, I've seen it acouple of times, and I've seen
the black and white one. Theydid remake it, right, Yes,

(01:12:12):
So there's the black and white onewas from nineteen fifty six, and that
one, I would say is probablymy favorite. And then there's the one
that has Donald Sutherland. Let melook it up. I think that one
is actually from the seventies. Maybelet's see, and maybe a Body Snatchers
is, yeah, seventy eight, and that one has Donald Sutherland, and

(01:12:39):
I think it has the girl whoplays Lois Lane and the Superman movie.
Oh, and that one's pretty Thatone's pretty fantastic too. But there's something
about that black and white one that'slike even more I don't know. I
just like it's one of those onesI can throw on anytime. I'll even
fall asleep to it. And Ilove the in the original one, the

(01:13:00):
creepiness of in that black and whiteworld when they find the pods that like
look exactly like them and it's likethe pod people. It's so good.
I was so excited that they were, like, I forgot that they actually
do acknowledge that this movie is basicallyInvasion of the Body Sanders for teenagers.

(01:13:24):
But I did really like that theymentioned that I'm not as familiar with the
Puppets Masters the Fiction or The Thing, which is another one that there's a
lot of parallels in this movie.I've seen the Thing. I know that
it is like considered like a prettygreat like horror sci fi masterpiece, but

(01:13:44):
it's not one that I've watched enoughtimes to really like grab on to the
things that are the same in thisYeah, I don't even I'm sure I've
probably seen it once, but Ithink it's a very time that i've The
unfortunate fate of it is that Ialways started too late and then I get

(01:14:06):
sleepy and never finish, and soI know the beginning of it, and
I get to like a certain sceneand then I'm like, I remember all
of this, and then it's almostlike I've never seen this movie from here,
So I really should make it apoint to watch that one, because
I know it's a pretty famous masterpiecetype of a movie in a lot of

(01:14:26):
opinions. They go to the scienceroom and the things are missing from the
aquarium tank, so nothing's in there, and they're kind of like, okay,
And we see Zeke and Marybeth breakinginto a storage room because Zeke's going
to show her where he gets allof his supplies to be this cool drug
dealer that he is, and there'san obligatory kissing scene that I don't know

(01:14:49):
why. It was so awkward tome, Like I was like, oh,
I know this is coming, andI know they had to do it
right, but this is just soI don't know. It was so awkward
for me. I was like,oh god, I you know what it
is. It's like I don't seechemistry between them. I think that's what
it is. Yeah, I don'tthink it's very strong, like I don't

(01:15:11):
think it's there's not enough like yeah, I don't think there's enough like build
up of the yeah relationship or likethey haven't had very much interaction. It's
like they met once and then they'remaking out in the closet. Yeah,
and they can hear because this isthe storage room that's connected to the science
room, they can hear the othermain kids talking about this alien theory.

(01:15:39):
Yeah, and they think that it'skind of ridiculous. And Delilah like they're
all in the room, right,And so we have Zeke and Marybeth in
the storage room eavesdropping and the restof our crew is in the you know
that are in the science room, and Delilah is in there and she gets
bitchy, starting up on stokely againand here we go on other artful line

(01:16:01):
solely says fuck you, tip bags. Why is it so good. It's
like blood, fart and tip bags. But I don't know, I just
I don't know. Man, thisCaptions gave me a gift and it was

(01:16:26):
so good. Um and I dolike that stand brings up our job?
Yeah, but why Ohio? Yeah, I liked this, Like why are
they coming here? Yeah? Andthe answer is like if you were going
to take over America? Would youstart at the White House? And it's
like it's more effective to start, you know, outside and then and then

(01:16:49):
make it so big that you can'tcontrol it anymore. Like it's sneaky.
It's like a it's guerrilla warfare,you know. It's like, yeah,
pretty awesome. Like I liked thatlittle explanation there. And then Zeke enters
the room and decides he's also needsto be an asshole to Casey as well

(01:17:10):
as everyone else being an asshole toCasey. Again, like the z character
is just kind of it's it's atough one, like we know we need
him, but he is a jerk. Well and I mean I know Casey's
supposed to be the punching bag forlike, you know, he's the one
that everybody's everybody picks on. Imean, you saw that from the beginning

(01:17:30):
where he gets like rammed into theflagpole with his genitals, which just is
very uncomfortable. But it's like there'sno reasoning for it, Like there's no
I mean, I feel like,I'm sorry. I'm just going to say
that you talked about his genitals gettingrammed into the flagpole and described it as

(01:17:50):
very uncomfortable. I am going tosay that was brutal. I mean,
yeah, yeah, I mean, could you imagine that poor kid? No,
no way, no way, LikeI'm surprised he did not end up
in the hospital, correct. Imean, I don't have like, you

(01:18:11):
know, but I mean anybody gettingI don't know, scissored at the slag
pole at the flagpole, I don'tknow, kind of whacky. Well,
so mister Furlong comes in and it'slike, what's everybody doing? And Zeke
tells him I think like, Caseythinks you're an alien because he thinks he's
being a smartass, you know, right, and forlong goes bananas and suddenly

(01:18:35):
shit hits the fan real quick.Yeah, there's an epic teacher fight scene
happening here. That first of all, I had to rewind it for a
second because there's a scene where suddenlyZeke has what appears to be almost a
sword and chops off John Stewart's fingersand I went, wait a minute,

(01:18:56):
wait, wait a minute, wherethe fuck did he get a sword?
So I rewind it and it's thefucking blade to the paper cutter. And
can I just tell you those arethe most terrifying things in school? I
feel that way. Um, wehad an art teacher that retired a couple
of years ago that no word ofa lie. A month before she retired,

(01:19:17):
fucking cut the tip of her thumboff in the paper. So it
really hit home. When I sawthis, I was like, oh no,
no, no, no, notthe paper cutter blade. I'm agree,
but that was a pretty epic scenewhere he like he just you're thinking,
man, Zeke, this is whereyou you shine quick thinking where he

(01:19:38):
just like takes his foot and likeyanks the top of that blade off,
and he's like, whatever I gottado, We're going to survive kind of
thing. Yeah, Then the fingershe cuts the fingers and the fingers go
scurrying, which all the way gross, yes, and then he you know,

(01:19:58):
they're struggling, and then not onpurpose, but he grabs the next
available thing, which is one ofhis drug pens, and stabs the teacher
in the eye to get him tostop coming for him. Yea, and
that does do the trick, andwe see him like disbrate kind of yes,
and Casey grabs grabs proof because they'reall like, okay, we got

(01:20:23):
to get the fuck out of here. We just stabbed a teacher in the
eye, like this is a bad, bad news situation. And Casey,
of course is the smart one thatgrabs jar and picks up the little parasite
thing that crawled out of the teacherand he's like, okay, we need
proof. And so they walk outto the parking lot and I love this
when they're all like, just walkout and be calm, just walk out
and becalm, just like as ifwe're just walking out to the car,

(01:20:44):
because they know everybody's turning. Yeah, so they got to just get out
of there, and everyone's looking atthem and drinking water, and I wrote
I feel personally attacked because stop lookingat me and drinking your damn water.
I am. I know I needto drink more water. So they go
to Zeke's house and he has,of course a mad scientist lab in his

(01:21:06):
basement, naturally, and caffeine pills, a gun, no parents, a
lab rat. I mean, whatelse would you need? I know,
I mean it's breaking bad with caffeinepills. I mean I was like,
okay, now, see when Iwatched this movie the first time, I
definitely remembered the caffeine pills because thisis how I learned how much caffeine actually

(01:21:30):
dehydrates your body, and that thatcould be foreshadowing in my future of being
a little problematic. But what Ithink I didn't remember is we get in
this scene eventually that Zeke says thatit's the caffeine pills, but it's also
some other household chemicals. Yeah,And in my mind, I thought it

(01:21:50):
was just the caffeine pills and thatthat was the big I think it's probably
the major thing, and he's probablyadding it is. I think what I'm
saying is, in my memory itwas more harmless because he just was selling
them crushed caffeine pills, which, granted, if you're snorting it is probably

(01:22:11):
not harmless. I'll still send youto the emergency room because it's like speed,
But I didn't really realize, like, no, no, he's really
like cooking drugs of some sort andI didn't remember that about the movie,
and I was like, oh,okay. But they use the parasite to
kind of test and test it onthe rat, like they kind of infect
the rat with it, and theydiscover that it's not a complete organism on

(01:22:38):
its own. It has to havea host and so it and the drug
is a diuretic, and Stokely kindof comes up with it like that there's
some kind of a leader because they'reincomplete on their own. So that's where
they kind of get this idea thatif they can get the main leader parasite,

(01:22:59):
the main parasite, that everyone elsewill that master. Yeah, kill
the master. You can kind ofkill the master. Yeah. So but
then the group. I do lovethis scene where they can't trust each other
because they're all like, well waita minute. It's like they all turn
on each other like one by oneand they're all like consulting each other and
um, yes. And then thesolution is that they all take the caffeine

(01:23:20):
drug because it's like, well, that's how you're going to prove it,
Okay, So Casey of course hasto go first because we're going to continue
to bully him, even though he'sbeen the smartest motherfucker in this whole thing.
Right, Okay, you'd all beturned if he hadn't come and like
figured shit out, I know, right, And so he starts laughing,
a very disturbing laugh that I don'tever need Elijah Wood to do again ever,

(01:23:45):
and and Zeke says he's tweaking.I haven't heard that word probably since
the nineties. It was like oneof those jolts. I was like,
he just says he's tweaking. Yeah, well, because Stan immediately picks up
the gun and is like gonna shoothim, and Zeke's like, hold up,

(01:24:10):
he's high. Yes, But Imean I was like, that is
some vocabulary that I forgot existed. And you know, I put like,
well, that would definitely be morethan caffeine that's in there if this is
the reaction. And I love thatthey're going around. Everyone's got to take
their little pen fall and Stokely isthe only one that says, well,

(01:24:32):
what's in it? Yeah? AndI put she's the MVP. She's the
only one that asks. And thenI'm not taking that hack drug. It's
so eighties. She's well. Ilove I love how everybody. We just
figured out that the only way youcan tell that you're not an alien is

(01:24:54):
if you take this drug. Yetevery single person is like, no,
I'm not going to take the drug. Well, guys, like you're in
an end of the world situation here. I mean, if you got to
sniff it up your nose, Imean, like I stopped. It's and
I turned to David and I waslike, I have I have never the

(01:25:15):
thought of sniffing something no, upmy nose and it I was like,
it's powder, and how I questioneverything with the burst of Flowne's going up
my nose and season that's plenty.I don't ever need to do anything like
that. So Mary Beth and Delilahend up being the last two, and
of course they're like no, no, and she's I'm allergic to everything and

(01:25:39):
blah blah blah. So they decidethey're going to do it at the same
time. And we figure out thatDelilah's infected, and there's and and Stan
who's holding the gun on people makingthem snort this drug. Hesitates because as
like his girlfriend, Yeah, andstokely grabs the gun and fun shooter.

(01:26:02):
It's like, again, she justkeeps getting better from the movie. She's
the very best character ever. Basically, they have this idea of if they
get the queen, they get everybodyback because the parasite will leave the bodies
right, So they decide where's thebest place to find this person will be
at the football game this evening, and we get to this shot of the

(01:26:26):
football game and we get the pinkFloyd brick in the wall, which I
put you pink Floyd but appropriate. We have some little PTSD with pink pink
Floyd and yes, it's so Ican't hear it and appreciate it for what
it probably is. It's not forme, but it's it works in this
In this scene, um, thecoach is a madman, meaning he has

(01:26:50):
the most upsetting smile in all theshots. It's just so gleeful as like
wrenching of the football players. It'slike football players are getting tossed and then
they're like convulsive on the field becausethen they're getting infected. It's all very
disturbing. It's visual, yes,and he's just his reaction. I think

(01:27:17):
what's really crazy is his smiles. And this actually looked genuine for his face,
which is the worst because it's likeit's so relaxed and smiling and like,
oh this is a great time.Right, You're just like this is
so weird and also too in yourbrain you're like, he's the terminator stopped
smiling. Hu Well, And Ilove the in the stands. It's like

(01:27:41):
they always cut over and it justsays kill, kill kill. Everybody's exactly.
So I do like that the kidsspeculate that maybe it's the Principle that's
the queen, and as the audience, we're speculating with them, you know.
So although when I when I waswatching this, I was like,
well, it wouldn't make sense likethat she would be because she wasn't like

(01:28:05):
so like like but they don't knowthat, so like for them to think
that that that is a true fairassumption from their perspective, we just know
there wrong, so right, Sothen they they're in the gym trying to
figure out like what are we goingto do and how do we find her?
And the Principle finds them, andCasey is telling her that she's got

(01:28:30):
to snort the drug and it's like, come on, you got to do
it, like we know you're analien, and they're saying force her casey
can't, and so then Zeke putsa bullet right in her forehead. Uh
huh. I was like, wow, that's uh, I hope you're right.

(01:28:51):
Well, yeah, and it's justvery abrupt, like no decision making,
no nothing. This could be whyhe's a fifth year senior. It's
quite the impulsive behavior issue situation. But so Mary Beth jumps in and pours
a ton of the powder on herto like get her to dissolve, and
they're like, whoa, whoa, whoa. Well, yeah, because she

(01:29:13):
jumps back up, doesn't the principalLike she jerks back up because they they're
like, oh, how do youknow you didn't just kill her? And
then she does sit back up intrue horror movie fashion. Basically, they
lose a lot of their only weapon, so they've only got a little bit
of the scat left. And alsojust because it starts storming outside and lightning

(01:29:34):
and thundering, stand asides, Okay, well obviously it wasn't the principle,
so he's gonna go check it out. Because now I think they're speculating that
it might be the coach. No, I think they were thinking. No,
what they did was they thought okay, Well, if if it was
the principle, then everybody should beokay. So I'm gonna go out and

(01:29:56):
chet right, I'm gonna go checkand see if the coach is okay and
the other players are okay. Sohe runs out to the field and then
realizes as he's like coming up uponthem that they're all standing there with their
faces to the rain and water tentaclesare coming from their face. It's a

(01:30:19):
it's a very powerful scene, yes, creepy. Before he runs out,
though, of course, we haveto have a kiss between Stan and Stokely,
which is very dorky. They hadto do it much like Zeke had
to kiss Mary Bud. Yeah.So Stan runs back to the school and

(01:30:40):
they have the door locked and he'ssaying, it's not like it's not the
coach or no. He says,oh, the coach must be the queen
and he's coming after me. Nowlet me back in. Yeah, And
the kids are in a real conundrumbecause they're like okay, And so they
throw a pen of the drug underneathand say take it, take it in
front of us to prove it,and he pours it out and we now

(01:31:05):
know that they got stamped, Sothey figure out that there might be some
more scat because now they're basically outin Zeke's car that's out in the lot.
So okay, they got to figureout who's going to go. So

(01:31:25):
it's Casey and Zeke. I mean, Casey is just the I know this
poor guy. He's just getting screwedin every situation. I know. He's
like, it's just like the cannonfodder. My favorite part though, is
when they go out here and they'redoing this and they're crawling under the bus
and they're trying to sneak to thecar, and Casey says, do we

(01:31:46):
really need two people to go getthis from your car? Zeke says,
one of us is a decoy again, so sureon off um, Casey kind
of runs to distract the football playersand then ducks real quick into a bus,
thinking they'll thinking like he's gonna keepgetting chased, and it kind of

(01:32:10):
works. But Delilah was just chillingin another and she's just standing there in
the school bus. And I alsolove how stand now has his football uniform
on. Oh yeah, Like he'slike he's he's like marching along with them
and he's got his uniform and everythingback on because you know you gotta look
like that's right, you gotta getyour uniform on for the game. I

(01:32:33):
do love. So Delilah is doingthe big spiel of like join us,
you know, yeah, and Caseysuddenly has superhuman upper body strength and just
hoists himself right out of the roofbus from the emergency thing in the top.
I mean the scene is almost ascrazy as in um, the movie

(01:32:56):
Fear I think, or No,or is it the Babysitter where like she
punches it and it flies out thewindow across like the hole. Like that
must have been the most powerful punchon earth. That was Casey flying through
the top of the bus, Likeyeah wow yeah, so um he lifts
himself out of the roof and thenZeke gets interrupted by Craig Cray miss Burke.

(01:33:20):
She is coming for him and he'strying to like distract her, and
he gets in his car and shejust slams her head right through the brass
your window and like Michael Meyer's style, her body's car. The actual how
creepy fancy Jansen looks in this scenewith it's like it's like this weird almost

(01:33:45):
like because like her hair is flyingand she's just got this kind of like
crazy. Look, it's a coolscene. It is a really good scene.
And the entire time we're watching,he's like, why is he driving
around? Why doesn't he just slamon the brakes? And I was like,

(01:34:05):
he's got to quote his seatbelt on. It's like zombie lanching, I
have the rules, that's right.Yeah, he puts his seatbelt on because
he's having the forethought that if hecatapults his car into the bus, she
will fly through the windshield and seatbeltwill still hold him in, which is
exactly what he does. Right.Um, and she's decapitated, but her

(01:34:30):
head promptly walks away with octopus legs. It is bonkers, but I really
love it, I know, andI'm absolutely her body is looking for the
head. I mean it becomes herrighteous right happening. Yes, yes,

(01:34:51):
so, and I just put herhead walks away on octopus legs, so
she's probably okay, Yeah, hehas some more drugs. So it was
worth this chaos. And then Iwas like, beware Cleia because she's in
the gym alone with Marybeth and they'retalking about body snatchers and Clia plays this

(01:35:15):
scene so perfectly with her talking facethat is silent. We know exactly when
she knows, just by her eyemovement and the change in her face.
Like but it's not that like overlydone. It's the subtle, like this
conversation isn't right, and like shemakes that like those like subtle movements of

(01:35:39):
her face, whereas the audience weknow exactly when she knows something wrong.
It's a really well done Yeah, her for her face is just emoting.
It's like young people, you know, like she's a young actress at this
time. Just I don't know,my love fest for her ain't gonna stop.
Just so we're Claire so Blondie theQueen and she turns into a giant

(01:36:01):
squid alien so of course, andthey fall in the pool. So,
um, this is bad, yes, because that's a lot of water and
so the squid is happy in thatwater. Um, but Casey manages to
get clear out of the pool becauseof course, motherfucking Casey is the best.

(01:36:25):
Yes, Like he's just a niceperson to everyone and he gets shipped
constantly Like that doesn't it. SoMarybeth is now naked and on the move,
uh huh, Like she's just walkingaround naked. Yeah, she's naked.
I do love like, aw,she's walking through it's like the the
visuals of like the the it's likethe tentacles and the shadows as she's walking,

(01:36:50):
and it's like it's such a sucha good look, Like I really
thought that that was like it's kindof like, um, it's like the
angel wings kind of ye in thebackground. You know that this is who
she is, Like, yeah, her shadows can tell. I was like,

(01:37:13):
oh, that's perfect. And thenum, you know, so Zeke
is caught between Marybeth and Stokely becausenow they're in the locker room and they're
kind of playing this like it's her, no, it's her, it's her,
No, it's her, and heknows her fucking nude ass is shady

(01:37:33):
as all get out. I lovehow he's like why are you naked?
Why are you naked? And thenshe tries to flip it like does my
naked body make you uncomfortable? Yeah? Yeah, an application, it absolutely
does. You're you're naked and theworld is being invaded by aliens, So

(01:37:55):
yeah, this is a weird choice. Yeah, it's not strange at all
that you would have suddenly ripped allyour clothes off, if you're just like
totally not one of the aliens, right, I know. I love that.
And so she turns out she didfake the test when they all were
supposed to be starting it. SoI do love the line that so well.

(01:38:15):
I love first of all, Casey, again the best person ever,
locks stokely in like the locker roomcage thing, almost like protecting her,
like I'm just gonna put you hereuntil we figured this out. Yeah,
like you're just right there, you'refine. Yeah, I'm gonna lock you
in there because clearly you've been turned. It's gonna be fine. And Zeke

(01:38:40):
comes in and he's like I leavefor five minutes, and everyone's like fucking
aliens. And now it's basically Iput the Jurassic Park kitchen scene, but
in the locker room it's like they'retrying to go in between the lockers.
And this whole time, Mary Bethis monologuing to give us her whole backstory

(01:39:03):
of her planet drying up and thenshe had to come here and blah blah
blah. So Casey manages to bethe bait and run underneath the bleachers and
he hits the button so that shefollows him under the bleachers as a squid.
She's full squid, yes, fullsquid. Monster. At this point

(01:39:27):
I put monster like she's she's themonster and it's big and it is under
the bleachers and the bleachers are collapsingin on the squid monster. Can I
tell you? That was always myfear because we had those kind of bleachers
at Richards and that was always Iwas like, that was always my fear
that somebody would press the button andI would get somehow. I'd be like,

(01:39:51):
oh, I dropped something, Igotta go run behind and get it,
and the bleachers would close on meand squish me. Yeah, terrifying.
Well that's bas sically what happens tothe monster yea, And Casey traps
her and basically, um, it'sit's kind of bonkers. But he stabs
her in the eye with the penand solves it. She disintegrates. Yeah,

(01:40:13):
it's all set, We're good.I also do like the fact,
okay, everybody's dissolving. It's kindof like that's how they figured out,
well, how are they going toclean up this mass of like, hey,
there's a giant like squid and thegem um. You just have it

(01:40:34):
dissolve into nothingness. Every everything dissolves. What else would you do? I
mean, it's it's how they solvedit in Buffy the Vampires later, all
the vampires they just discerned to dust. There's no bodies, right, there's
no evidence, no, no evidence, No, no one's gonna believe you.
I don't think you're crazy. Yeah. Um, Well then it says

(01:40:54):
it's one month later and Zeke isnow playing football and smoking at practice,
and miss Burke is watching him atfootball practice back to her like mousey miss
Burke, And I was like, what's happening with this storyline? Are we
supposed to assume that they were fuckingat some point? It's kind of very

(01:41:17):
weird the interaction between the two ofthem, and it's it's it's not okay
if he's a fifth year senior.No it's not cute either. No that's
not cute. No, that's realgross, that's gross. Um, and
then I put no, stotally isnot wearing black. She's an all like

(01:41:42):
Lilac. Like, really, youthink one month later she would be completely
get rid of all of her It'slike Sandy in a freaking grease. Well,
Andrea, she got her man,and so now she's happy and can
wear colors. Now colors, that'sfine, but like, come on,

(01:42:05):
you don't go from like you don'tin a month. You don't go from
I mean maybe, I mean sheprobably got she didn't get whacked on the
head pretty hard going into the pool. So well, and then I have
to say, okay, So asmuch as I was like stabbed a little
in my soul of like, oh, you took away her like goth girl

(01:42:28):
vibe, and I love that forher. Yeah, the thing I really
couldn't stand is like it shows thatCasey's been on the cover of Time magazine
and like all these newspapers of butisn't it like who would believe him?
But okay, fine, Well Ithink some of it was like they did
hoax or hero or whatever, andit was like, okay, But then

(01:42:50):
I really did not like this choicethat Casey and Delilah got together and I
have a very weird kiss at theend, and I wouldn't wish Delilah on
him anything, like I know thatthey showed that he kind of had a

(01:43:11):
crush on her the whole. Yeah, but she had no redeeming qualities the
entire time. She was awful theentire way through, Like there wasn't time
when she was ever not a completeand total horrendous person. This isn't really
an happy ending for him in myopinion, Like, that's not happy ending
for Casey. No. I know, we're supposed to think in our teenager

(01:43:35):
minds that like he suddenly gets themost popular girl, but like she's awful,
so like this is not happy,Like and I was like, I
wish they would have had Casey hisresolution would have been something more than just
him getting a girl that it waslike he kind of is confident now and

(01:43:58):
has friends and you know, justsomething else. I was like, this
for me was not what I wouldconsider a happy way to wrap up Casey's
story, you know, or Ijust because it feels like they were trying
to make everything button up nicely forthe kids. You know. Yeah,

(01:44:18):
everybody's carried off, even though oneis with a teacher. One of them
completely changed her personality and the otherone just feels like that unless they're supposed
to be some sort of sarcastic ninetieshumor to that, I'm not sure,
but I don't know. I mean, overall, I do enjoy this movie

(01:44:43):
it's definitely not amazing. It's justfun. I think it's kind of it's
one of those where I remember it'sone of those that will suck me in.
I remember watching like flipping through thechannels and it would come on TV
and I'd be like, oh,well, I gotta watch it now.

(01:45:04):
Like it it has enough going forit that it makes it an enjoyable watch,
and the fact that there's just somany people who are now big stars
that you're like, yeah, likethere's like it's one of these movies that

(01:45:26):
you could get really angry about thefact that it's a rip off movie,
Like it really is. Yeah, that's what it is. It's a rip
off movie, right, Like it'sabsolutely stealing from the plot of other original
works. So that's number one.But then I think it's almost like the
fact that there's a little bit ofhumor in it was actually a really smart

(01:45:51):
choice because it helps you not getso mad about the fact that it's a
rip off movie, right because youcan laugh a little bit during it,
you know, the blood fart andthe chip bags and all the other funny
things along the way. Yeah,it has enough wit to it that it
will it It's like you you Yeah, it doesn't make you so mad that

(01:46:15):
you won't watch it. Well, and I think them referencing those movies as
well, I think also help givesa nod to the fact that they know
that it's not an original I meanthey talk about it. I mean that's
not an original concept. Yeah, yeah, it's definitely it helps. I

(01:46:35):
think that they call it out immediatelyor like, you know, they call
it out very Um, it's notsubtle. Yeah, you know, they
put it right out there that it'sit's that it's you know, got origins
in that. So I like thattoo. It's definitely you know, I
don't know, it's like I wasthinking, you know, what movie I

(01:46:56):
was thinking about when I finished watchingthis was like Disturbing Behavior, which also
was sort of like a body snatchkind of situation. Yeah, And I
do think Disturbing Behavior in some waysis a little more well done in terms
of like the story, but thisone here, I think you're going a

(01:47:23):
little far on that. Like,I don't think, I mean, Disturbing
Behavior has its problems. The insaneasylum in it is problematic, yes,
yeah, Katie Holmes, it is, Yeah, Okay, I I think
it has a little bit more ofan origin originality in the implementation of that

(01:47:47):
same kind of concept, Like it'snot a straight like here's an alien parasite,
you know, this is more likethese people are doing it to themselves.
Yes, I feel like with DisturbingBehavior, because it is kind of
like this, you know, who'sstill their original self, right, And

(01:48:08):
I think what that kind of mademe think of the parallels. But I
feel like disturbing behavior is supposed tofeel suspenseful, where I feel like this
is not. It's sort of like, oh no, we're just going to
call it what it is, andthat it's aliens parasites. And then we're
just going to call it what itis and it's you know, teenagers are
going to save the day and yeah, you know, and that there's the

(01:48:29):
like the little comedy factor built in, so it's like they're kind of in
MyD I was like, I wonderif these kind of were out at the
same time, if I would havekind of felt like they were the same
movie. But I definitely like themboth for different reasons. I think that
disturbing Yeah, like you said, disturbing behavior supposed to be scary, Yeah,
this is not. This is supposedto be just more of like,

(01:48:54):
Okay, I don't want to saydisturbing because that's but you know, it's
it's just supposed to be a littlebit more like um, kind of miss
mystery based, as in like Who'swho and kind of creepy but not like
just scary. Yeah, and thiskind of has more that sci fi.

(01:49:16):
I don't know. I like it. I would watch it again. I
don't know though, if like highschool students today would like it, like
young people today that don't have almostlike the nostalgia for it, I'm not
sure if they would like it ornot. I don't know. I'd be
interested to see. I feel likewe need to have, like, you
know what, another podcast idea wecould, you know, we watch a

(01:49:42):
movie and then we get some likegen Z people to watch it as well,
and then we all discuss it andsee what happens. I think it
might lead to a little too manyarguments. But yeah, I don't know,
because I do wonder when we dothis, if it's now like,

(01:50:02):
is it the nostalgia that's sucking usin for some of them, you know,
like that it makes it kind offun, But I would I think
that's like with any movie. Ifeel like that's kind of what it is.
I mean, you like you,I don't know. I'm sure there

(01:50:24):
are movies that my kids will lovewhen they're older, and I'll be like,
I don't, I don't know,like we'll go back to watch it.
And but I mean my kids likeJurassic Park, they like Scream,
they like anytime we bring up that. So I mean, I don't know,

(01:50:44):
but yes, it does have alot of very nineties, has a
very nineties feel, and it iswild how many big names are in it.
That is wild. I totally forgotabout that wild. And I mean
we're talking the small parts. Uhhuh, Like the teacher parts are small,

(01:51:09):
and they're like bigger actors, youknow, and regardless of whether they
were as big as they are todayas they were then. It's just I
completely forgot that. It was like, because you know, all I could
think about was like Josh Hartnett,Yeah, sure, and like I remembered
the main blonde girl and I remembercleared of all and then everyone else was

(01:51:31):
like, yeah, and there's someother teenagers in it and the teachers and
all that. Like I think that'sall I could That was my focus from
the memory of it, and Itotally forgot how many like big time actors
like that ended up making it big. I think it was a it's a
fun movie. It's just fun.Yeah. I mean for sure, it's

(01:51:54):
if you've got, you know, the time to if you just want something
that's extremely nineties and has a it'shas a decent plot. It's the thing
I like about it. It's notlike, um, there aren't a lot
of stupid decisions made. Yeah, they seem to be like either fight or

(01:52:16):
flight decisions. Or you watch thekids like logic it out. Yeah,
like when they figure out like totest the parasite on the rat, you
know, and then like they figureout like they do logic it out.
And even when like the Jack guyasks like why ohio, and they like
logic it out. You know.I do like that a lot too.

(01:52:36):
I think that that helps. Ithelps you kind of stay on their team,
you know, like you're And thatis one thing that I will say
with this group, even with Delilahbeing the bitchy one that's mean and Zeke
being mean, you know, there'snobody that you're not Like I don't I

(01:52:57):
never felt like there was somebody thatUm, I didn't really care if they
died from the main group. Yeah, you know, it was like you
kind of wanted them all to makeit like it's you weren't there wasn't um
the way they all kind of bandedtogether, and then each of them kind
of had a role in the logicingpart of it. Yeah, you you

(01:53:19):
didn't necessarily, um, you weren'thaving like none of them were throwaways.
You know. Delilah was probably theclosest. Yeah, I ever wouldn't have
I wouldn't have missed her too much. But true, I mean that's true,
but I think, like, youknow, you kind of needed her
to be She was like the majorconfidence, like we're gonna walk right into

(01:53:44):
this faculty cafeteria, you know, like we're gonna you know. So it's
like, you know, she's probablythe closest thing to it. But other
than that, like you kind ofwere like, you want the jock to
survive, you want Zeke to survive, like you you you're kind of vying
for all of them. Yeah, and I like that. So the Delilah
character, originally they want a charismacarpenter to be her, which I might

(01:54:10):
saw that and she she basically saidno, because it's like the exact same
character I am playing and Buffy, which I can see. I mean,
you don't want to get like typecaststhat which I still think she did end
up getting typecast as the you knowgirl. But I mean this was basically

(01:54:30):
Cordelia Cordelia Chase. Oh yeah, absolutely, except a little bit more as
a little bit less redeeming. Yeahfor sure. Well, yeah, we
get a little more time to seeCordelia's journey better sides to her. Yeah,
her journey. Well, I definitelythink this is one that I will
keep in the rotation. I don'tknow how often I'll watch it, but

(01:54:53):
I feel like when I go tobed after this, I'm might put the
black and white Invasion of the BodySnatchers lad. It kind of makes Drew
uncomfortable. I feel like he's notI don't know. I can't tell if
he likes the Body Snatcher movies asmuch as I do. He is very

(01:55:15):
weirded out by transformational horror. Really, yes, so like the Fly.
He hates the Fly. It couldlike he'll have nightmares from watching the Fly.
That's how much heat he's like.He doesn't like when the person like
transforms into something else. Yeah, and like can't control it, you know,
like that it for something that likehits a button with him, and

(01:55:38):
I'm not sure how to. Idon't really know the psychological like implications that
might have, so I can't.I don't know if the body Snatchers like
falls into that category, or ifhe's just lukewarm about it, or if
he really likes it. I'll haveto ask him, but I might have
to do that. And I definitelythink I should watch Terminator too. I

(01:55:59):
know, but that's not a sleepingmovie. No, that's not what I'm
going to fall asleep too. ButI do think it's someone I haven't seen
in a while, and after allthese Terminator two references, I might need
to make that happen. I knowit might be time. Well, I
think that, you know, forour first episode back after a long hiatus,
this one was a lot of fun. I do have some ideas for

(01:56:20):
our next one that I wrote ona post it, and it's sticking to
my attendance binder at school. Soto be continued. Okay, thank you
guys all so much for listening. If you want to get in on a
conversation, check out our social mediafeeds. We're at fourteen going on forty
podcast on Facebook and fourteen going onforty pod on Instagram. You can always

(01:56:41):
email us at fourteen going on fortypod at gmail dot com and I will
at least be I'm not sure ifI can bring myself to add Pink Floyd
to the playlist on Spotify. Butis there it's like a remake of that,
Yeah, there is, there is. There was actually a music video
with these guys in it. Yeah, but it's still just as like a

(01:57:06):
creepy sounding But I understand it's aclassic song, so maybe I'll have to
just suck it up. So inthe meantime, we will try to get
back on track with our calendars andour busy lives and get inspired. Especially
with spooky season coming soon. Ithink it's a good time to get some
more movies under our belt and getback to, you know, revisiting some

(01:57:29):
of this stuff. So you know, while you're waiting, watch a nostalgic
movie, watch somebody Snatchers, watchsome faculty, whatever you need, but
you know, find a way touse blood part in a sentence. If
nothing else, Yeah, make sureyou're drinking your water. Oh well,

(01:57:51):
we've learned nothing else, at leastagain

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
