This week on The American Family Farmer, we’re going beyond the “thank you” to explore what real, lasting support for America’s veterans looks like.

Host Doug Stephan welcomes Ken Fisher, Chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation, an organization that’s been a lifeline for military families for over three decades. Fisher House provides free “homes away from home” for the loved ones of service members and veterans receiving medical care—ensuring that no one faces hardship or healing alone.

With sobering statistics showing that nearly 6,400 veterans died by suicide in 2022, and more than 30,000 service members lost to suicide since 9/11, Ken shares why supporting our nation’s heroes can’t stop at one day of recognition each November. He discusses the ongoing mental, emotional, and financial challenges faced by military families and offers simple, meaningful ways that individuals, communities, and employers can make a difference every day of the year.

Tune in to hear how Fisher House Foundation continues to honor the sacrifice of service through action, compassion, and community—and how you can be part of that mission.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
The American Family Farmer podcast sponsored in part by Caldron,
The Safe, proven Way to lose weight. Check it all
out at toploss dot com. I have focused on the
plight of the veteran who becomes a farmer, and because
it's Veterans Month and we had Veterans Day coming up
the idea of what do we do with veterans and

(00:22):
how do we support them if they want to go
into agriculture or they come from the world of agriculture.
I've invited Ken Fisher, who's the CEO of Fisher House,
the Fisher House Foundation, to talk about agriculture, veterans and
generally speaking, supporting our nation's veterans every day. When you
consider Ken, the number of people who died by suicide,

(00:46):
the number of veterans, and you put that together with
a number of farmers who unfortunately have ended their lives
the same way in the past couple of years, I
thought I would find out from you what you know
about farmers and programs for farmers, the veterans who go
into farming, and how that works with your program at

(01:08):
Fisher House Well.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Fisher House First is a foundation that builds comfort homes
at the Department of Defense and VA hospitals around the country,
now around the world, we offer free lodging for families
of sick, injured, or wounded service men, womener veterans that
place to stay for as long as they need to.

(01:31):
You know, you touched on the suicide issue before, and
you know, when you think about the number of veterans
that live in our big population centers, the cities, you
think about VA and plenty of services and so forth
for them, But the veteran that lives in the rural

(01:52):
area can sometimes be a bit challenged getting treatment, getting
the help that they need when they transition from military
life to farm life to agriculture.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Sometimes getting mental care mental.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Access to these programs are difficult because they live in
rural areas and the services are not as plentiful in
some of these areas as they are in the major
population areas. So, you know, suicide remains a major issue
in this country, but it has to be the same

(02:30):
for veterans who are farmers as opposed to veterans who
live in our city centers.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
You know, thinking about how this all came about what
the problem is, brings me around to understanding you. But
the audience may not know about Fisher House. So why
don't you bring us back to the founding the Fisher
House Foundation, how you and your family is involved in this.
What started all of this, Well.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
It started with my late uncle, Zachary Fisher, who was
a patriot in every sense.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Of the word.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
And we are developers by trade down here in New
York City. And you know, it was brought to his
attention that there was this basic, yet underappreciated need that
families had no affordable place to stay when their loved
one was receiving hospitalization.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
And my uncle was solution driven.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
He didn't believe in sitting back and just pointing out problems.
Zach said, I'm a developer, I can get an architect.
I know how to build a house. And that was
a simple solution to this major problem that now has
grown over thirty five years to five hundred and thirty
five thousand guest families. And this program, through our lodging

(03:47):
and other initiatives, have saved these families six hundred and
fifty million dollars worth of lodging and travel. So it
was a little acorn that became the oak, and our
services just keep expanding as we learn more about issues
that plague our veterans throughout our society. Whether they're in

(04:08):
rural areas or in major population areas, a veteran is
still a veteran.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Hold on a second, Ken, We'll continue with Ken Fisher
in a matter of moments, talking about veterans, veterans day,
veterans who become farmers. This is the American family farmer.
Caltron is on the top of the food chain, if
you will, when it comes to losing weight, and because
it is full, it's time to focus on what we
seem to get into every year at this time exactly.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
You know, we call it the eating season. There's candy,
there's food everywhere, warm bread, the leftovers, and you know,
while this season is full of joy, it is just
also full of temptation. Caltran's working with your body naturally
to rebuild lean muscle, tissue, to repair joints. So overall,
you know, just within the first week or two of

(04:55):
taking caltrin, you are going to be sleeping better, waking
up refreshed, having more energy throughout your day, and even
less joint pain. And really around the one month mark
is when you're going to start to notice your clothes
fitting better, inch loss, maybe even a few pounds on
the scale. The West side is toploss dot Com. There's
a big fall sale going on right now. So whether
you have a little bit of waight to lose or
a lot of weight to lose, it's a great time

(05:16):
to you.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Caldra Elizabeth Miller from top loss dot Com and Caldron
here back on the American Family Farmer. We're talking about
the Fisher House Foundation work with military families. There are
many farmers, many people in agriculture who were veterans, who

(05:38):
are stumbling and having problems, and that's what you're helping
to address here with the Fisher House Foundation. So in
terms of what could grow from your inspiration, do you
have any stats or any knowledge of other people who
have taken your lead, Because what you're trying to do

(05:59):
here is pretty simple. Whether people can get involved or
how do others? How do people how they find their
way into one of the Fisher Houses.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Well, it starts when a loved one requires hospitalization, whether
they're wounded, injured, or ill.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
You know, a veteran or.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
An active duty just because they wear a uniform doesn't
mean that the only way that they're going to need
a hospital is because they were wounded in battle, some
of them get sick, some of them get injured in
training accidents, and so forth. Fisher House offers a comfort
home for their families to stay in for no charge
for as long as their hospital state dictates. Fisher House

(06:43):
has been around now since nineteen ninety. Since that time,
we built one hundred Fisher Houses around the world. We've
helped five hundred and thirty five thousand guest families over
that over that time, and we've saved them now over
six hundred and fifty million dollars in lodging and travel.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
So what's in it for you?

Speaker 1 (07:04):
That's always the question that people ask someone like you
who has in your family has a great business. What
is there You mentioned your uncle Zach, and he was
a great patriot, But sometimes there's more to it than that.
Did he know somebody? Did he have the same experience
that others had himself personally well.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Fisher House was founded back in nineteen ninety by my
late uncle Zach Fisher, when it was brought to his
attention that there was this basic yet underappreciated need that
families had no affordable place to stay Military and veteran
families had no affordable place to stay when their loved
one was injured, sick, or wounded. And so my uncle said,

(07:49):
you know what, we're developers by trade down in New
York City, we can get an architect. We know how
to build a house. And instead of being another one
of those people that point out problems, we became part
of the solution. We built the first couple of houses,
and then the foundation was formed and today we are

(08:13):
now operating one hundred fisher houses around the world. We've
held five hundred and thirty five thousand guest families and
we've saved them through our lodging and travel initiatives almost
six hundred and fifty million dollars. For me, it's more
special to pass down to the next generations, you know,

(08:35):
giving back and that concept of giving back, especially when
you factor in that only one percent of this population served.
That means that ninety nine percent of us have no
idea what it means to put the uniform on. We
don't know what it means to serve or sacrifice or
bear burdens. And you know, behind every one of the

(08:58):
men and women that wear the uniform is the family
that also serves. So when you think on Veterans Day,
you know you're not just honoring the man or woman
who war or wear their uniform, but you're honoring your
family as well because they serve too. You know, when
you think about this population and you know the issues

(09:21):
that they've gone through, especially in transitioning back from you know,
from war to civilian life. Since nine to eleven, thirty
one thousand men and women have taken their own life
as veterans. And then you factor in that seven thousand
lost their lives from wound sustained on the battlefield, meaning

(09:47):
that a veteran is four times as likely to die
by their own hand as they are from wound sustained
on the battlefield. Now that means we are you know
we're not. We're failing and helping these men and women
and their families, and we are so we're so numbers

(10:09):
oriented in society that we forget that behind every one
of those thirty one thousand men and women that took
their own lives is a family that is still suffering.
So this Veteran's Day, it's not just enough just to
say thank you for your service. That is great, but
we have to let our deeds speak louder, which means

(10:33):
supporting and saying thank you to their families as well.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
Hire a veteran.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
You know, these men and women have dealt with some
of the most significance, you know, sophisticated technology that this
country has, and with AI and technology being so much
a part of corporate America today, hiring these men and
women just seems like a no brainer. A good team players,

(11:01):
they're leaders, They have the attributes that every corporation or
company wants as part of their payroll, so they make
excellent employees. Support a veteran owned business. They have served
their nation. Now they're transitioning out, they're taking a risk,
they're starting a business. They deserve our support and our help.

(11:24):
So by all means, if you can identify one and
there's ways to do it, identify it and see if
you can and help a veteran own business.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
If you're in a rural areas.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Where you know where, you're not in a major metropolitan
center where you know, care may not be readily accessible,
but there are community based organizations that exist, make sure
that these men and women who may be suffering in
silence in the more rural areas where care isn't is
easily accessible. Know about these these these community based organizations

(12:03):
that can help them at least in the beginning, that
can stop them from going over that edge and help
them with their transitioning on a grassroots level.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
As far as.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Fisherhouse is concerned, go to our website Fisherhouse dot org.
You'll learn a lot more about what we do. Again,
we have one hundred of these comfort homes and the
numbers are significant. But we also have other programs aimed
at helping family members go back and forth because life

(12:38):
doesn't stop because their loved ones in the hospital, just
like in civilian life. So there's lots of different ways
to get involved. But I think the most important thing
is if you didn't serve like I did not serve,
I did not wear.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
The uniform of this country. This is my way of serving.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Start what better day then on Veterans Day when you
can start to learn about veterans issues and get involved,
whether it's with Fisher House or any organization, Get involved
and get involved in a meaningful way so that you
know when you say thank you for your service, you
can back it up with deeds as well. In the

(13:21):
thirty five years of our existence, we've the last twenty
one years we've gotten the highest possible ratings from the
charity watchstore groups. Ninety four cents on the dollar goes
towards building houses and our other support mechanisms for families.
We're a family oriented foundation, so learn about us and

(13:43):
hopefully the more you learn, the more you'll like.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
All Right, So with regard to Ken Fisher and the
Fisher House Foundation, you can go to Fisherhouse dot org
to find out more about the housing programs that they

Doug Stefan and his allies like Bob Ploppenstein put together
so that you understand more about what's going on on
the small American family farms. Things the news that's affecting
family farmers. And usually there are a few stories in

from all the perspectives. We have people from the American

(17:41):
Farm Bureau Federation on, We have voices from the National
Farmers' Union. I don't have politicians on the program because
I don't think that at this point we have much
respect for politicians, whether they be from the farm states
or they're claiming to be a voice of agric culture
or not. But we do have lots of people who've

(18:04):
had great experiences, come up with great ideas, and I
share those with you. That's one of the premise of
the program is to bring you ideas to make your
farm more successful from people who've had success. So that's
all part of it. Catch it every week on the

Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant.
