quick. Of course, this isthe end of the seasons for the Atlanta
Hawks, the regular season, sowe've been good at having our two guests

(02:32):

he also created the first logo aswell as some personal projects for me.
(03:15):
So next time you have something thatyou need to present to the public as
far as a business, make sureyou contact him and let him know that
Around the at l Since you thatbeing said, let's go ahead and bring
in our co host Jordan Jackson. What's going on, Jordans? What's going
on? Sir? I'm glad tobe on a Round the All today.
(03:36):
Always a privilege when we have achance to speak to Atlanta Hawks royalty.
And that's exactly what Steve Holman iswhen we spoke to at four pm.
And that's exactly what mister Bob brathFund is who is about to speak to
right now. So, as Jordanjust mentioned, we had earlier today our
guests Steve Holman, the voice ofthe Hawks, and tonight we have one
(03:57):
of the most recognized spaces in arounda sports um. He's to play by
play for the Atlanta Hawks since nineteenninety six. He also does play by
play for the Atlanta Dream by theway, God Dream Um also college basketball,
and he's called upon a lot tohost many events in the Atlanta sports
um industry in the city of Atlanta, football college football as well. UM.
He's a professional extraordin there and heknows the game of basketball and the
(04:21):
Atlanta Hawks. Tonight, our guestis the jabab rasping. Let me bring
him in. How you doing,Bob? Hey, guys do great?
Playoffs? Are here? Lay all? Sorry here officially, um, Bob
boys. One of the things Iwanted to stay right before we get started
is one of my favorite moments forhaving you on around the atl is when
(04:44):
you told the Atlanta Hawks fans tokeep your shirts on. Trade is just
getting started its summer league. Thesegames don't count. I'm always going to
remember that, Bob. I'm justletting you know. So, I just
wanted to say that as one ofmy favorite moments on a round the atl
after all these years, I'm gladwe you were able to get you on
tonight. We speak the truth truthall right? Oh, great start,
(05:08):
great start. So my first questionto you Bob, I got the first
question tonight. So, um,obviously you just made you just said,
you know, playoffs are here,Hawks and forty one and forty one making
the playoffs for the third straight year. Trey led the league and assist again
for the second straight year. Um, Hawks are healthy. But for the
second time in five years, therewas a coaching change made before the season
(05:30):
was over. So just in youropinion, just as we get started,
because it was basically one of themost monumental things that happened with all the
other stuff happening this year, doyou feel the coaching change was made at
the right point of the season ordo you think it should have waited until
after the season. What was what'syour opinion on that coaching change this year?
(05:51):
Well, of course, as werecord this today, we have the
benefit of hindsight, which we didn'thave the when the change was made.
I think anytime that the franchise changescoaches, it did season if you go
one or two ways, right andI think for the Hawks it turned out
(06:14):
for the better. And that's totake nothing away from dates. You know,
Quinn's record was just about the sameas Nate's record in terms of games
over five hundred or under five hundred, as the case may be. So
in that regard, you didn't seea whole lot of difference. But I
do think he gives Quinn an opportunity. And this is not to dwell on
(06:38):
the Celtics right now, but thiswill give Quinn an opportunity going forward to
get valuable insights in the locker room, in practice, with wins, with
losses, being around the team thatI don't think he would get otherwise.
So going forward, I think it'sa great thing. Now, the way
(06:58):
we played in Miami, this teamis definitely trending up. They know what's
coming. Celtics are one of thevery best teams in the NBA. They're
going to be very hard to beatin Boston. But I will say this,
if there's ever a chance to theearly game in Boston, it is
Saturday afternoon at three thirty. Celticshave not played a game. And I'm
(07:23):
talking about the starters. We werejust up there last Sunday. But guys
like Smart Brown Tatum, they havenot played much basketball over the last really
two weeks. I think they couldbe a little rusty. You've got a
team that has high expectations in Boston, really high expectations in Boston to win
(07:43):
at the Garden. You've got arookie head coach in his first playoff experience.
It's a little different when you're inthe playoffs and those three pointers are
being challenged like they haven't been allseason long. So I think the Hawks
could play well, keep close.I think they've got a great chance to
steal one in Game one. Soand once the road team, the underdog
(08:07):
breaks through, and what's the game, particularly on the road? Damn things
you tried to get interesting? Yeah? Anything. I just think that Hawks
are kind of bringing with confidence rightnow, coming off with they did of
Miami. And that's why, Andthat's why I brought it up at the
beginning of this is and guards ison the coaching side of things, and
again Ashton's He've alluded to it earlier. You know, Nate is great,
(08:28):
and I don't think there's a lotof animosity there or anything. It's just
a matter of fiece that you know, he is old school, and I'm
like, there's nothing wrong old school. But I'm old school too, and
that's how I play. But Ican't play like that against the new school
guys though. Right now, thevery way ahead of me on a lot
of different things. And I justthink that with our team and how it
structure, elements that it was pulledback a little bit, and whether it
(08:54):
be on the defensive side. Andyou know, we know that we lost
a lot of games after having abig league We know that. And then
on the side of this ball movement, we know we got Tredy Young on
our team. He's trying to getfifteen seventeen asins a night, but it's
hard to do that if we don'treally have a lot of people cut into
the basket and stuff like that. And we've seen the elements of a little
(09:15):
bit of that transition over the lasttwenty games where we can see that,
and then it kind of all fellin on month on Tuesday, I should
say, against Miami because basically everythingthat we saw, it's like, oh,
well, is this what we're goingto be seeing from now on?
If so, yeah, we canget Boston to run for their money for
sure. And I know Jordian wantsto talk about that Miami game in detail.
(09:35):
Go ahead, Jordan, Yeah,so Joe, remember of you guys
kind of sad way into my questionbefore we do look forward to and to
see what we have a history againstBoston. Just wanted to don't touch back
on the game against the Miami Heat, for my money, Personally, I
think it's probably the most complete basketballgame we played all season, or at
(09:56):
least one of them. And Ilet you speak on the ball, but
I just make one comment before youdo. I thought the passing was essentially
crisp in that game, and thenwe saw guys that typically aren't known for
making great passes making great passes.Aside from that bar, what are some
of the keys that you saw thatallowed the Hawks to have such a great
(10:18):
performance against the East. Well,in addition to the passing, our offensive
rebounding was superb. When you crashedthe glass against Miami like that and you're
getting over twenty offensive rebounds, you'vedone some work. And I think it
spoke to the aggressive nature with whichQuinn wanted to play the game. He
(10:43):
wanted to attack before the defense couldget set up. And I think that
speaks to your point about the passing, just to get the ball down the
floor and not wait, not hesitate. They crashed the boards, which,
as he said, in practice today, our best transition defense is an offense
of rebound, and I couldn't agreewith it more. That stuck. The
(11:03):
way they approached the game was perfectif you don't often go into Miami and
touch them first, and that's whatthe Hawks did. They were more physical
than Miami. They had Miami relingthe whole game. It was great Steve.
Steve Holman had mentioned in regards tojust one of those priests or nuances
(11:26):
on defense coming back on defense, because well, one of the things I
always have beaten us this year ispoints in the paint, second chance points,
fast great points. Tuesday night, none of those things were hurting us.
And one of the things that hesaid that was put in there is
that on coming back, we're gonnaput up a wall and then we're going
to match up in regards to comingback down. And I think that that
(11:50):
one change changed that whole complex ofthat game, because pretty much most of
the season there's just a lot ofwhere's your man and then lay up?
You know, that never happened theMiami. He could never get into any
kind of approve on that end,and even bound it was like you know,
you know, it was mystifying almostto an extent, but it was
(12:13):
like it's really good to speed. So yeah, a great point, and
we're gonna trying to do that Saturdayto get back turned face your opponent.
Uh, get a hand up.You know. It's a different team,
you know, because Boston shoots thethree ball as well as anybody, and
and they've got to be able tophysically play that type of attack, a
(12:37):
lot of side thicket and roll action. They've just got it. They've just
got to get there. And Bostonalso presents a little difficulty forces that they
struct your figs because we'll see RobWilliams for the first time. So if
that's going to be with him,you know in that dunker spot and kind
of hugging the rim where he clintagainst Miami could rumbles before and John Collins,
(13:03):
you know, he's kind of ChaseHorford after that three point line,
which you're not used to doing againstboth teams. So a little different um
offense to deal with for the Hawksdefensively. But they've they've had two solid
days of practice another one tomorrow andI think they you know, they know
what they've got to do and they'rethey're ready for the assignments. Yeah,
(13:30):
yes, very well. Um,I think you've done the use of time
or two because you seem to alwayssegue into the next question before we can't
even ask you, but that thatwas basically going to be what my next
question is, give me a fewkeys, um, maybe a few key
matchups or a few key strategy pointsum that that you think that the Hawks
(13:50):
are going to have to do inorder to beat the Sellsis. I thought
you made an extent point, andthey bringing up the fact that we actually
have the more experienced coach in thisparticular matchup, um, And what are
some of the other things, oh, one other thing before you knew say
that. I want to mention thatI think it also plays our favor if
Jaylen Brown, who supposedly cut hishand warning Flowers, would order his plans
(14:13):
on a bag, I think dothbig as well. What are some of
the keys you're seeing, Bob,the things that we have to do in
order to have a chans to pulloff the big upset. We're gonna have
to communicate and we're going to haveto play all twenty four seconds of the
shot clock. Boston is an outstandingthree point shooting team, as I mentioned,
(14:35):
but they are really good on cornerthree against US. From the right
corner. They hit fifty five percentof their three. That cannot happen if
we have any chance at all ofstealing the game up there. So I
think our three point defense and thechallenge thereof is a major key to get
(14:56):
back. Get a hand up playedthrough the action on the side, and
make sure that you've got a planas to how to go after these guys.
You know, we spent a lotof time in practice today with the
help on the three, you know, getting that secondary defender to come over
and help a little bit, andyou don't have to go smother them with
(15:18):
the double team. That's not it, because they'll just reverse the ball and
there's an other shooter waiting on theother side. Primary defender getting set and
get a hand up. They're gonnamake threees because they take all The Golden
State shoots more threes and the Bostondoes, so they're gonna they're gonna make
some threes. You just don't wantthem to get twenty twenty two, you
know, something like that, becausethat we don't shoot that money or make
(15:41):
that money, and it's hard tomake up that kind of difference. If
they've got twenty and you've got thirteen. Well, let's twenty one point.
You're given up on the three pointline and you got to find that somewhere
else at the found lines that rangeor whatever. And that's hard to make
up in a playoff game. Butit's a little different the playoffs. Two.
Know, yes, they're great shootersand we all know that, but
(16:07):
man pressure, Yeah, well itgets kind of right like you're running around
when you're playing Detroit, you know, uh, at the middle of January.
It's a little different now and uh, but it's a it's a great
home court advantage for them. They'revery comfortable playing there. But again they're
rusted. Uh you know, ifwe could come out and jump on them
early, they'll get them thinking alittle bit. And uh and I like,
(16:30):
I like that absolutely, you're right. Uh, you know, at
some point feel allowed too many threes. The math just doesn't add up in
your favor. But I do agreewith you that's the key. Yeah.
One of the things, one ofthe things you mentioned bout was well,
since you mentioned practice, he's talkingabout practice, right, Um, switching
and communication, right. You knowwhen when I do Sunday Night basketball videos
(16:53):
and I talk about you gotta knowwhere your man is, but you also
have to talk it out and thenyou're trying to talk to where you're not
creating a mismatch, and if themismatches there, you gotta say, okay,
I can switch. Now. Youhave to be able to do that
throughout the whole position. Somebody does, either the coach or the players on
the port because if you can dothat, you do minimize those wide open
shots. And if you can dothat, again, they're going to hit
(17:15):
some of them, but they can'thit all of them. Like you said,
that's just absurd from them to hittwenty five threes them Again, that's
not that can't happen. It didn'thappen. So that's that's really encouraging that
from Tuesday, that's continued to bethe theme because if they can do that,
that's going to put us in agood position. It's one of the
keys that when we're talking about thepractice today is that you know, the
(17:38):
ability to communicating allowed building, particularlywith the defenses at the other end of
the floor from your bench, iscrucial. So how do you do that,
Well, you've got to go tononverbal. You've got to be able
to make some hand signals and tothe point where if you've got a teammate
of trouble, you just have tophysically go get in reckon where he's got
(18:00):
to go, because that's the onlyway they're gonna hear you. Um,
it's so noisy in there, it'sso loud, and you've got to be
able to you know, vallu man, all the all the basic concepts of
defensive play have got to come intoto play in this game because if you
get confused, Boston is so goodthey'll take advantage of us. We're gonna
(18:22):
be on point with that. Andthat's another thing that we talked about a
lot today in practice. Uh,it was. It was a real coaching
clinic today. I must say Iwas privileged enough to be able to sit
in and watch it and not justgreat stuff. I mean Quinn really knows
what he's doing. And that's notthat Nate didn't. It's just a different
(18:44):
style. Quinn's the only guy talking. He's walking around the court the old
time, very energetic, h verybusinesslike, knows what he wants and I
think I think this team is goingto be very well prepared. Doesn't mean
you're gonna win, but you'd berunning for what's coming. You want a
chance, that's all you can askfor. Fifty fifty. So Jordan,
you think you know you got anotherquestion? Um so, So, Bob,
(19:11):
I do want to bring this upbecause I brought it up with Steve
a little bit earlier. I justwant to get your take, because definitely
you're one of the pre eminent ofpeople in the journalism in rural in the
in Atlanta, um over, overthe last couple of days, there was
this this one piece of documentation outthere floating around basically saying something regards to
(19:33):
Tred Young and him not being hereall of a sudden right and you had
a lot of outlets publish it,put it out there as if it was
this is it, this is fact, you know, and a lot of
them were here in Atlanta, okay. And I'm just wanted to know where
does the line cross where on thejournalism side as far as context, because
(19:56):
there's a lot of responsibility for anysportswriter or or or a person in public
eye and things of that nature inregards to the fan base, in regards
to information that goes out there. But when it's so disjointedly negative all the
time, on one side, ofthe spectrum. Where is the line?
Because for a long time for thealount of Hawks, there's a lot of
people in Atlanta that really don't likethe Hawks, and lately they don't like
(20:19):
Trey Young obviously. So even afterthe organization said this is not true,
even after on the broadcast for TNTthey said this is not true, there's
no merit to it, you stillhave people doubling down on it, as
if we're gonna keep talking about thiseven though we had a big win.
So kind of give us your perspectiveon that bought because I really would like
(20:41):
to hear it. Well, isn'tit funny? Funny ironic that all these
stories just happen to come out onTuesday Day? The Hawks are playing on
t first since m OK Day.Yeah, and this is the day everybody
(21:02):
decides to make up a story aboutTrey Young. I'm sitting in the media
room in Miami and we're getting readyfor Quinn's press conference. And I don't
know if you guys know who TimReynolds is the Associated Press, but it
was the their lead NBA writer,Okay, And so this cat covers everything
(21:29):
that has to do with the pressionalbasketball covers the Olympics, covers everything,
and he is the man based inMiami, and his reaction was to this
story, leave the kid alone. He hasn't said anything, the team hasn't
said anything. That's a non storyand a non starter. Will it be
(21:49):
addressed in the offseason. I haveno idea, but right now today,
non story. And Tim Reynolds, who you talk about for journalistic integrity,
you know he's got it times ten, and his reaction was leave the kid
(22:10):
alone. So I will agree withmy good friend Jim Reynals. It is
just amazing to me how people andI'm I come from a different era,
I understand, but how people canget on the air and safe things just
the same thing as you my mine. You've got to have documentation, you've
(22:37):
got to have source to go witha story like this, and and I
don't I don't understand how they getaway with it. And I don't understand
how their bosses looked at it away, and and and I guess that's the
crux of it, Bob, becauseat a certain point, if you don't
have the self awareness. I canuse that phrase phraseology sometimes because I talked
(22:59):
about that basketball, But if youdon't have it the person above. You
have to because again you're talking aboutdozens, hundreds, thousands, hundreds of
thousands, millions of people who arereading whatever it is, and depending on
where they are, they're gonna takeit as for what it is. And
again, like I told Steve earlier, I feel that it poisons your fan
(23:21):
base when it happens again again again, whether it be a casual fan or
forty year old forty year a fanto say, there's no there's no mistake,
this is for this is what itis. We're not retracting it.
We're just gonna keep it out there. And it really hurts where again it's
the home team people that are doingit a lot of times. And that's
what really bothers me. And Idon't again, you kind of took the
(23:45):
words out of my mouth. Howdo you get away with it? You
know? And and again it's it'syear halfter year after year. You know.
That's it bothers me. It's verysad today to see this. I
must full transparency. I cannot watchthese shows. Yeah, I cannot turn
(24:07):
on the television and nine o'clock, ten o'clock in the morning and watch grown
men scream at one another over stuffthat just doesn't matter. I mean,
in the grant, I've been inthis business almost fifty years. I can
count on one hand the times thatsomething has happened that I felt like I
(24:32):
had to go norm ray and jumpon the desktop and start screaming it just
and they do it every twenty minutes. And I think it reminds me of
professional wrestling, Like they get togetherin the morning in the production meeting and
they say, well, you takethis side, and you take this side,
(24:53):
and will debate quote unquote, willdebate this topic. Well, that's
not debate. That's all swig atstage and the inflammatory language and the you
know, breaking news and all thisstuff. It's just trying to get clicks.
They're just trying to get you towatch. And I just can't mind
(25:17):
that. You know, in sportstalk radio, UM, they talk often
about you gotta have something to sayto make the phones ring. Well that's
done, that's no no. Whogot to be talented enough to tell stories
inform your audience. Then you don'tneed phone calls, absolutely, and we
(25:41):
have so far gotten away from that. It really makes me sad because there's
no bottom to the pit. Justkeep sand stuff and sand stuff to provoke
reactions. Well that that's not broadcasting. I don't know what it is,
but it's not broadcast. Shortly, wasn't what I was raised on with.
(26:03):
Yeah, and that's that's that's whyI ended up starting around atl years ago
because at a certain point I wasand this is when I still lived in
that round him. I was like, I can't take it anymore. What
are we doing? Like, arewe in that Lanta or not? Are
we in the state of Georgia orare we in Texas? What's really going
on here? And it was upsettingto the point where I said I must
(26:26):
formulate something because again, we're allfans, but I can also critique as
well. I could be disagreeable oncertain things or whatnot, but I'm not
so much to the point where I'ma stump on this, you know,
and I'm gonna make sure that everybodyelse hates you too. You know.
That doesn't make any sense. SoI appreciate you mentioning that, because I
think a lot of people need tohear that over and over again to kind
(26:49):
of compete against it. You know, we gotta brush back on this.
Somebody does go ahead Jordans. Ijust want to absolutely absolutely agree with you
guys. Disappointing to me is misterKevin o'click bay, who the writer of
the article he took Basically the sauceof an article was of March third conversation
between Jeff Schultz and PAULI wrestler, and all the wrestler said was I let
(27:15):
my basketball players make that decision.I don't get involved on he just traded
it wear and then he took thatin terms of this like it was into
some new breaking news that the auseropened to trade anybody, including trade yarn.
Then you know, FROs disappointing againstso many people. All you had
to do is really read the articleand click make a couple of clicks and
you can see where it came from. But instead people don't really read.
(27:37):
They just see a headline the wayit's framed, and they start repeating it.
To the point where you had nationalguys like a Kendrick Perkins say that
the horse are wrong for putting thatinformation out there right before the player and
the HOSK didn't put any information outthere. Then you also had car kuz
But saying the same thing as well, who I was pinted to personally on
Twitter. Um, and I thinkit is just irrispar pustible journalism. Um.
(28:00):
And you're right, it's just tryingto draw clicks. And I mean
I hate to say this. Iknow you may not do it involved and
I will. It doesn't surprise mecoming from a publication that Bill Simmons started,
you know, fun to mean.Um. And I also think that
that same publication basically said that tradewas most likely to build bust after the
(28:21):
draft. So to me, it'sa case that we're still trying to validate
Dad's draft team as opposed to justadmitted, like, look, we're wrong
about this kid. He's a player, I know, he a Sports is
supposition to be fun, you know. And um, yes, you you
want to have water cooler talk.Uh, you know, who's the greatest
of all time? And you knowyou could debate that back and forth.
(28:45):
But when it gets down to thislevel, I mean, this is not
this is not sports talk. It'smalicians. It's malicious, that's what it
is. Yeah, And um,it puts train events, it puts your
organizations of very tough spot to haveto respond to it, you know,
And maybe it'll go away. It'ssort of like the circus going through town.
(29:10):
You know, if it comes toyour town, it stops for a
minute, but then they move on. And that's kind of what this story
reminds me of. You know,it parked for a day because the Hawks
run T and T and now theymoved on to something else. And you
know, Atlanta had a great, great win that nobody's talking about it.
Instead, they're talking about all thisconcept. So I hear you, and
(29:34):
it's nice for me to hear youall feel the same way because you you
have influential voices in our city andit's important that they'd be heard. And
it's nice to know that, youknow, it's rooted in fundamental basic decency,
which I salute you for. Allright, we appreciate that very much,
(29:55):
Bob as hard that goes. Sothat being saying, we'll turn on
the wider note they you know,we are in the playoffs officially, and
we are going to play those BostonCeltics, and we do have the robbery
over the last few years of playingin the series against Boston and things of
that nature. Um, I havesomebody here on the YouTube channel, mister
(30:17):
Michael Smith already gonna said, yo, Hawks and six So there you don't
see, we're picking it up rightthere, there you go, because hey,
if you win the first one,all that's all. That's why I
responded to him. So, um, that being said, Bob, you
mentioned you know, you were intopractice and stuff and just hearing and watching
and everything like that. How doyou feel these next couple of years are
(30:38):
going to be going for the Hawks? Because you know we have you know,
we have a course still and nowwe have you know, of course
we have a new system, anew element there um running it back.
We got JJ, you got bigOld, you know, you got aj
you know, we got these youngguys coming in and everything along with the
veterans and stuff. How do youperceive things over the next few years?
(31:00):
Do you think, because I said, I told Steve earlier, we have
a window here. You know, the East is the East is what it
is. But I feel that wecan compete with everybody there. So what
would you perceive, you know, our window you over the next couple of
years. Well, I think we'vegot to recognize as a new sheriff intown.
We have a new GM and anew coach and they haven't had any
(31:22):
time yet to lay out a blueprintthat they can attack because all these changes
happened during the season. No teamthat's made the playoffs ever in the seventy
six year history of the NBA isdoing what we're doing, which has changed
coaches with twenty games to go andhave a new GM halfway through the season,
(31:48):
so to say, what are wegoing to do in the next twelve
months, twenty four months? Howit relates to the East? You know,
I think we have to pump thebrakes on that. Let's get through
the playoffs. Let's sit down,Let's assess where we are, because the
CAP's going up quick will be broughtin. What'd you think? Who do
(32:12):
you like? Who don't you like? What do you think we should do?
Here's where we are contractually, Here'swhere we are with our draft stock,
Here's what we've got coming to us, you know. Blah blah,
blah, blah blah, And sitdown and just take a deep breath for
the first time and lay all thisstuff out. Think you know, And
if I could just draw a parallelto Sports Talk again, if you tune
(32:38):
in in a twenty minute segment, the hosts, generally speaking, they know
more about the team than the GM. The coach that right, And in
the next twenty minutes they're the GMof the Balconist, and the next twenty
minutes of the GM of the Braves. Now we've got a basketball staff that
(33:05):
is consumed with this stuff. Thisis their livelihood, and we don't have
all the answers, and this isall we do all day. So for
fans listening, I would just say, let's give these guys a second when
the season's over to catch their breath, exhale, and just sit out and
(33:30):
say, guys, here we are. We got through this. I'm new,
you're new. We don't even knowwhat Quinn's staff is going to look
like next year, and let's justtake it through the offseason and get ready
for the draft. I think that'sthe big thing right now, is to
just let's kind of assess what wehave, what we think we have,
(33:52):
where we're going, what the fickslook like at all that. So that
would be my take off. See, Bob, I was trying to get
you to tell us tells everybody thatwe were going to win the next three
championships. I was trying to getyou on the record that that was the
plan that didn't work out. Butyou gave the perfect answer though, because
that's that's the other part of it. I'm being silly a little bit.
(34:14):
But yes, we're gonna have awhole off season where we're gonna have a
full implementation of whatever Quinn has instore, you know, because like you
said, he's he's evaluating and ingame in real time, and then he's
going to bring the people who hestills will be the best teachers for the
team. As far as that goeson the staff, the you know,
(34:34):
GM and everybody. They're gonna belooking at the draft, as far as
who you're gonna come into. Howmuch money do we got, the agents,
all that kind of good stuff, and we're gonna have a whole summer
to go through to go into thetwo thousand, twenty three seeds and officially
at a certain point. So definitely, of course Hill the nails on the
head as far as that goes too. Um, but you know, I'm
crazy. I'd like to throw outthose three rings, you know, real
(34:57):
quick. I'll just say that, you know, I agree with you,
Bob. I'm living in the moment, I'm living board of this series.
I want to get down to ifnot at least one, if not both,
of these home playoff games. Yeah, I'm trying to create the home
court advantage of the challenging all thehome stands out there. We can to
do. So, you know, let's make it where it's more Hawks jerseys
in the building, in green jerseys, and when you see a green jersey,
(35:21):
we don't want to start any stuff, but we want to boo down
and let them know that this isnot a friendly environment for you guys that
come in here. Well, youknow, it's funny you mentioned because I
was telling the people at Ballet todaywe had our big production meeting and we're
pulling clips and all that stuff, and I said, I remember in two
thousand and eight or we played thesecamps and it was one against age and
(35:44):
we were coming home down O twoand Steve smith was doing the games with
the things, and Smithy said, what do you think the crowd's gonna be
one for Game three? Is itgonna be sixty forty Hawks? Is it
gonna be fifty fifty? And Isaid, see, I don't know.
You know what it's like during aregular season, but play offside don't know.
(36:07):
And you couldn't hardly find a GreenJersy. This city turned out like
you all saw two years ago.It was part of that at eight and
until that run. We had togo to the Eastern Conference finals. That
building, then Phillips Arena was asloud as it has ever family, and
(36:32):
if I'm not mistaken, Celtics hadto leave the fourth quarter and all three
games heater and one night it isJoe Johnson, the next night it was
Josh Smith and Saza doing the headbutton with Garnett for this city just exploded,
and you couldn't find many Green Jersies. So I've really looked a board
(36:53):
the next week when we get backhere. I agree, bother. I
attended two guys of that series. That game it was just Incredien defy um
and but when you did said greenjersey in the building, every Hawks fan
was food. Oh it was fun. Nobody wanted to fight. It was
no no real tracking, but itwas great fun. And so you know,
(37:16):
I agree. I want to jointhe moment, but I will have
said it is no matter what happensin this series, and I do think
we have a shot, But nomatter what happens, I think the future
des right. Brother, Holmes,Uh going forward, certainly, I do
too. I do too. AndQuinn has done a pretty remarkable thing.
You know, think about this, guys, It's like he landed on it
(37:38):
on a foreign planet somewhere he dhe's dropped in, he agrees to take
over. He knew four people,he knew me, he knew Hallman from
what he was an assistant coach withfun. He did me, he knew
(37:58):
Halman, he knew John Steinberg,he'd do Zach Walsh, our travel guy.
And that's about it now and nowhe takes the job and two nights
later he's coaching the team that ispretty out there. He doesn't know any
of his players. I mean,he had Trent, Forrest and Utah.
(38:22):
That's about it. And can youimagine you get dropped in to another city
and you got to do this twodays and you're dropped into a prime time
show. Think about it. It'soverwhelming. If done, he's done a
(38:44):
fantastic job. But he's so goodand so positive. I really like the
way he communicated these guys. Imean, look at the at the way
he had them prepped for Miami. If you'd have seen him, and I
mean he what he didn't two gamesin Miami. He's been on the job
about a week and take that andcompare that to what you saw Tuesday night
(39:07):
night, and we're making great stridesin a short amount of time. Exactly,
absolutely, And you're totally right,Bob. Typically when you have a
touch of coaching trains like that,it's an interim coach from the same staff
that's taking over, not a guy, a totally different guy coming in and
he's I was, he's not puttinghis whole scheme in, but he's adding
(39:28):
little wrinkles here and there. AndI think, you know, we couldn't
have asked for much better than whatwe're saying now. We're all specially culminating
in that great performance against the heat. So I totally agree with you,
Bob. Yeah, thank you,Well, Bob, we're not going to
keep it. We want to say, of course, thank you once again
for just taking out the time tonightand just over the years and everything.
As I mentioned, I am goingto try to come up there next week
(39:49):
and for a home game. Idon't know if I could pull it off.
Just yeah, I'm trying to workit out. Um, but um,
it's not We just need to beatthe Celtics, so we can go
to the second round and now Icome up then, so that of you
how we'll work it out as faras that goes. But um, thank
you again man for being so graciousto us. Again. You are one
of the faces that are most recognizablein Atlanta really over these years. And
(40:14):
as I told Steve, one ofthe best things about being a Hawks fan
is you and Nique on the TVside and Steve and Conti on the radio
side. That's part of the experience, like without y'all. Like if anybody
has ever tried to watch a Hawksgame on somebody else's broadcast, it is
terrible, Like that is terrible. So I just want to say thank you
(40:37):
to those for all the work you'vedone over the years as well. Just
on that tangent, but you knowwhat you're talking about. You love the
team, you love the city andeverything, and that's why it's just versions
so appreciative of you being around ball. Well, guys, anytime you know
that we appreciate you all and whatyou do. It's so great. And
(40:58):
keep up the good work and we'llsee you back here next week. I'm
gonna go up there and get awin to clamp Shower. I hope I'll
get a chance to feature speak withyou that while it is the game through
a game four, because that's gonnabe a one or four or both of
them. Didn't wait, all right, but I'll take care man, Okay,
guys, take care. That wasthe legendary mister Bob Rathman on Around
(41:23):
the atl and again, you know, the first the first time I had
Bob on, it wasn't I didn'tcall it Around the atl at the time
because I just kind of started doingregular shows. But I was actually in
San Antonio at the time and theHawks had just uh i think, beat
the Bulls to get into the playoffs, and the Hawks are about to make
(41:45):
their trips to go to wherever theywere going to go to play in the
playoffs, and Bob said he'd beavailable before going out there. And that
was my first interview with Bob.I think that was almost shot. That
was five years ago now, Ithink four or five years ago now,
So from Breton now, to haveyou know again between him and Steve on
the show at least once a yearhas always been really cool. Again,
(42:07):
you know, their legends in thein the broadcasting game, in the community,
and for the fact that they takethe time out to you know,
come on to the show talk tome and Jordan talk real basketball, real
Hawks basketball, not the flim flam. You know, we had a whole
discussion about that early. Why didyou think? I asked, asked that
question, right, So it's it'sreally cool, you know, and I'm
(42:28):
hoping that you know, more peoplecontinue to watch around the atl for reasons
of that matter. By the way, make sure you follow about rapping on
Twitter. They're at alb wrapping TVfor sure. Um. But yeah,
Jordan, how do you think thatwent? Man? Oh, it's upstanding
man. You know, these guysare just such both es you but just
such true professionals, man, justat true amount of sports royalty, I
(42:52):
mean allot of sports Hall of famers, um. And so they have a
chance to get their expertise and youknow, just to see so many different
layers and some of these different anglesto this, and you know, they
they each kind of hit on differentaspects of it, different angles of it,
um. And it's just so greatto hear man, um I said.
Hope, gentlemen, they steck awayinto the next question you're gonna ask
(43:14):
before you can even ask it becausethat you know, they so much know
what they're doing. But I thoughtBob, you know, was very chick
of it as usual, that thesepoints were very well made. Um,
and I appreciate him, you know, give us a little bit more time
than we thought we'd have with himas well to keep it real. So
just thank you so much to Bob, a true professional, true that lad
(43:37):
of sports Wars. I really wastrying to get the Sounder three championships in
the row. He just wouldn't doit. Man, I tried, I
tried. You see how constructed thattickle anyway, UM, So I do
have okay, so we have alittle bit extra time more than we have
before. So six four six sixfive two four four seven nine, if
(43:58):
you'd like to call in and jointhe show for a little bit, and
the tap room is open too.We had top Cat, Michael Smith,
h Urim, who else. Therewere some other people here. We taught
Hawks TV and Sherry All we're watchingfor the last couple of minutes there.
So appreciate everybody watching there TV.I'm definitely familiar with him on Twitter as
(44:22):
well as Urie. Shout out toEurie. Both of those guys are certainly
regulars. UM. And that's noslight to the other gentleman who you just
name. But I those two namesI certainly recognize from the conversations on Hawks
Twitter. Yeah, I've met Urione, I believe at the draft party,
UM a couple of years years ago. And UM, definitely familiar with
(44:43):
him in his work. He's alsoa writer UM as well, UM in
the music industry, so I alwayscheck out his stuff as I can.
But UM, but yeah, ifanybody wants to call in, we got
a few minutes UM six four sixsixty five two four four seven nine.
So you know, talking about theBoston Celtics again. Um again, if
you win Game one, that putsall the pressure on the team at that
(45:05):
home. We all know that that'sbeen a generational thing when the Boston Celtics
case especially they're the defending Eastern Conferencechampels, right and so for them,
you know to get you know, here goes oh man, Boston got played.
It was supposed to be them inMiami. Oh well that didn't work
out, right, So now thatand now that they're playing the Awks,
(45:28):
you know, and again I saidUM in Steve's interview earlier this afternoon,
I predicted the hospital win by tenpoints. The reasons being we have Quinn
decision maker. Right. Two,we're healthy. We were not nowhere near
healthy last year, right and thenand then three we have extra players that
(45:51):
we didn't have before. You havea Murray who can get his own shot
at any given time and handle theball. We have Jj actually getting the
play. It is what it is, right you Also you also have um
the rest of the bench. Thatbasically I mean between big old Bogie being
healthy and hitting his shots and think, I mean, I thought he was
(46:12):
gonna win mill so I said theother night, I was like, man,
Bogie came through there like he wasgonna just you know, bubble clutch
and you know. So you haveall those elements as well. To say,
if we do play some defense ofany kind, we have a shot.
And that's obviously that's what happened. Now can we repeat that with Boston?
Of course we can. Will weas an offensive words, So that's
(46:35):
gonna be the exciting thing to say. And and oh, by the way,
we have Trey Young actually on ourteam. We have somebody who's led
the NBA in the sist the lasttwo years. He's in the he's in
the top one, two three inthe league over the last five years since
he's been playing. He also,by the way, average is twenty five
plus points a game every game.Like he's on our team in real life
(46:57):
people, and so to say thatwe don't have a chance in the world
is kind of crazy just because he'son our team, you know, and
not like somebody else who's not playingright now. So you have that.
So again, whether or not it'dbe Brown and his you know, injury
with the hand and the flowers orwhatever. And you know, I know
(47:19):
Bob mentioned Al and hitting his threes, but John can keep it with Al
as far as that goes. Johnactually can come up out of the paint.
He's not gonna stink in the bottomof whatnot. So if if,
if that's the matchup, I favorour matchup in that for sure. Right,
Um, it's really gonna come downto Tatum. Tatum is a potential
MVP candidate. He's been playing likeit all season long. But it's like
(47:40):
Bob alluded to, when it's whenit's the playoffs, you know that shallow
all the stuff can maybe disappear onyou a little bit. You know,
you get a little bit nervous. Its free throws don't hit as much as
you want them too. So I'mwarn there, who's gonna be the little
girl in Atlanta's who's gonna screen forus when the other teams didn't hit trying
to hit free throw? Like,we need to find we need to volunteer
(48:01):
somebody, because obviously it worked.I had never seen that before, but
again I thought Torono had that game. And I flipped back and I was
like, wait a minute, theylost. I was I was still dumbfounded
by that. Any other thoughts,Jordan as I checked to see if we
got any calls? UM, wellto shout out to all those house Twitter
man who listened to us and supportlessman, shout out the miss D,
(48:23):
shout out the AJ shout out theflash UM so many UM. You know,
I just think that um we nowdo. And it's no differenspect to
name like I said, honestly,Stephen, Bob Bows and light Nave.
He's definitely a good guy, agood a good person. But as far
(48:45):
as just a basketball strategy wise,I don't think adjustments was the strength,
and they do seem to be anadjustment of coach Schneider Um. You know,
We've mentioned this a little bit earlier, but putting the bigger John Collins,
Jimmy Butler, you come from beingable to just drive straight to the
basket and muscled his way in hugeimpact on the game. Having trade played
(49:08):
basically a given Gold style in termsof when the double team came, he
gave it up and then he ranto a spot and he wanted to get
to. Oftentimes the ball came backto him on the moves and that allowed
him to be an attack off thedribble to be able to knock down.
He had this great shot off theglass once he made several floaters on that
type of play. That was agreat adjustment. And so I think it
(49:34):
is interesting. Shout out to GlennWillis, who does a lot of stuffball
Hawks Twitter. He does a lotof great frim breakdowns, and he was
showing some ways that the Hawks couldattack Boston switching defense by making quick cuts
and whatnot. And so I'm lookingto see if that's something that we try
to do in his next series. You know, I do think we have
(49:55):
a chance, and I'm gonna tellyou something. If Jaylen Brown can't go
or if he's not effective, they'regonna watch out, you know what I
mean. I know people are gonnasaying, well, we lost the Phillies
bitch other day. Yeah, butthis is different the playoffs. It's the
playoffs now. Um, like DejantMurray said earlier, Um, everything in
(50:22):
the passions behind them. Now,this is a new season. They made
the dance and so you know,I think you see that this team is
hungry and this team is um,it's by it's by buying into what Quinn
Snyder is trying to do. Andyou know, it's taking a while to
implement certain things and to kind ofget away from some of the other things
(50:43):
you have been used to doing forseveral years. But I think we certainly
are seeing the results and if theycan stick to the game plan and not
revert back to some old ways,I wouldn't I wouldn't be surprised as most
people would be to see who shotthe world. Certain it's definitely possible.
Like I said, I've been sayingit for a while in regards to just
(51:05):
a transition of what's going on inthe offensive side of the ball's not happening
on the defensive side of the ball. If you're able to merge that together.
We have the pieces that can wingames, and we proved that throughout
the season, just a forty oneand forty one, you know, losing
to Charlotte those three times, youknow, losing to Rolando, losing to
Houstead, losing that Utah game athome. We had no business losing to
(51:29):
that, you know. December, that next game we lost by four points.
We had to lead in that game. We lost by four points.
You know, all those things ledup to forty one and forty one and
having to qualify as we did toget into the playoffs. But now that
we are there and we do havean element of a differentiation in regards to
concepts and being disciplined to do certainthings, it's wide open because we have
(51:53):
the talent, you see what I'msaying. And so that's what makes me
excited about and that's why I justcan't understand why there's so many who who
are in Atlanta who don't want toget on that trains to say, well
why not? What if? Becauseif you're if you continue to stay on
that side and the Hawks do keepwinning, how are you gonna keep doubling
(52:14):
down all the way to the EasternConference Finals, Like, what are you
gonna do? What if they winthe Eastern Conference Finals? What are you
going to say at that point?Right, what if the Hawks won the
NBA Championship this year? It's possible, right, anything is possible. Some
people would say anything is possible.Shout out to Hendasy, but anyway,
free pople, miss any Hennessy, thank you. Um. I think people
(52:37):
need to be excited. I thinkI think you have more of a fan
base that wants to be excited because, like you said earlier, we need
more fans in the stands. Wecan't let you know what have happened in
the past, you know, afew weeks even though we have sellouts,
we've been selling it out. Butyou do have those you know, floady
people from different places in there. They don't belong. So hopefully next weekend,
(53:00):
like you said, we have fullyou know, Hawks colors. It's
obvious it's Hawks, and we don'tsee you know, Speca green here and
there or whatever. But worse, the national television audience that's launching the game
knows that you're in the atl Wegotta make that apparent. We gotta make
that show of force to say,we do have a team here. We
(53:21):
have a good team. We canhave a great team possibly, and the
only way to do that is towin, obviously, and that's that's what
we're going to have to do.What better way to do it is in
the playoffs proving ground, right,So I think a lot of the players
have stuff to prove, you know, they want to show what we're all
about. Finally, um and say, you know what, the regular season
(53:42):
was an apparition. Now we're inthe rear, you know, and I
think we can do it. Andif I mean, I'm just excited,
I'm just happy that we're in thisposition because we because easily we've been not
in this position at all and lookingcrazy and that just was been depressing.
So um that being said, Georgygot anything else, because we're gonna blame
what else out certainly only expect ofgreen. I want to see as a
(54:04):
green stem on these peach peaches onthe peach tree hops. Get that.
I'm sure people will be. We'rein in the piling and if you do
see any other green, like Isaid, um, and like it did
happen m during the first hosts aCeltic series of the Joe Johnson era,
you boot them mercilessly, um,just to get back before we go to
(54:25):
just a little bit of the gameaction. This series is interesting because if
it features the leagues total us leaderin total assists versus the leagues and leader
in total points, which Jason Tatumwas. And so I do think a
big keys to this series is goadto be slowing Jason Tatum town. I
don't think you're gonna totally shut himback and I gonna hold the four points
(54:45):
from six points or anything like that. But if he's gonna score twenty five,
make him take twenty five shots.Don't let him be um gefficient.
And I think if we can dothat that we have a great shot a
long not overhelping to do it.If you could do that. While I
staid home on shooters and contesting everyshot, Yeah, they're good shooters.
(55:07):
They're gonna make some people with thehand in their face, But if you
contest them ferociously, they're not goingto because you know, make everything.
And so like the big keys umthat I see, and I'm just looking
forward to them at all. I'mlooking forward to see what coach Court Snyder
(55:27):
is gonna do against the first yearhead coach. And you know, if
that first year head coach can evenkeep up with Coach Snyder when it comes
to adjustments, then this is justfirst plas as the head man um.
So with they're being said third, you know, I'm just behind these Hawks
one hundred percent. I do understandfans get frustrated that time. Some of
them, I think is a defensivemechanism because they've been so disappointed in the
(55:52):
past. But it's time to putthe pass aside. Let's all rally behind
this basketball team and see if wecan't, you know, help them shot
the world and if they shocked theworld and this series, what's the thing
they can't do it again? Soyou know, I'm not getting too far
ahead of ourselves, but I dothink that we do literally have a bunch
of chance in the series, sirexactly. But that being said, folks,
