L’intero soggiorno montefalchese di Benozzo Gozzoli venne inspiegabilmente ignorato da Giorgio Vasari nella seconda edizione delle sue Vite de’ più eccellenti architetti, pittori, et scultori italiani da Cimabue, insino a’ tempi nostri, pubblicate nel 1568. Ciò, sebbene gli affreschi absidali con storie di san Francesco conservati nell’omonima chiesa cittadina, oggi sede del Museo Civico di Montefalco, possano considerarsi uno dei più importanti cicli pittorici rinascimentali dell’Italia centrale. Non conosciamo le ragioni di questa volontaria omissione, come non conosciamo la reale motivazione per la quale Vasari scelse per lui il nome Gozzoli, totalmente assente in qualsiasi documento storico riguardante il pittore fiorentino.
