In this episode, Nishith speaks about why our 9 to 5 unnecessary gets all the rant. Instead we should identify the distractions we think are unavoidable and then avoid them. He speaks about five such disgtractions and strategies to avoid these distractions and make your 9 to 5 productive.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Hi, Improvers, and welcome to the Be Better Bait by
Bit podcast. This is episode number forty nine. Nine to
five is a difficult yet unique learning place. Many people
rant about nine to five as if this is the
worst thing that has happened to humankind. People claim that

(00:28):
the key to finding the right success is only coming
out of the nine to five thought process come out
of the nine to five thought processes. As they say,
a lot of times I find myself standing in their direction,
But a lot of times I tend to disagree with myself.

(00:49):
How can the nine to five be non creative? How
nine to five is causing a lack of entrepreneurship? Why
is nine to five ductive? I believe if our nine
to five can allow us to be productive and focused
on a decided path, we can achieve a lot for

(01:10):
ourselves and others' lives. It's been seventeen years and my
nine to five has helped me alleviate my confidence daily.
The challenge is that I face in my nine to
five are unique. The people are different, their perspective, their
style of working are different. The same allows me to

(01:32):
think differently and take detwos wherever required. It's not the
nine to five, but the frustration of disrespect that creates confusion.
It's not the nine to five, but the itch to
become like others create a panic. It's not the nine

(01:54):
to five, but a few key distractions which make it
un worthy of our time. And today we are going
to talk about these distractions. So five unavoidable distractions which
you can avoid. Distraction number one a half ready body.

(02:18):
If you are entering the office with a tired body
and mind, better, don't go when you are out of
the office. You must give your body the required fuel
and rest. If you miss it, your body will not
assist in what you seek from it when you are
inside the office. When home, your family needs you one

(02:40):
hundred percent. When on vacation, you need yourself to be
one hundred percent. So why present yourself as anything but
less than that in your nine to five and then
blame nine to five friends? Sleep well and give proper
rest for your body. Eat well, nourish your body with

(03:01):
the right fuel. Your nine to five needs your one
hundred person. Don't give it anything lesser than that. Distraction
Number two saying yes to everything that comes your way.
Yes to an unscheduled meeting, a phone call amid an
ongoing conversation. Yes to a call for a coffee break,

(03:23):
Yes to long walks after lunch, yes to gossiping, and etcetera, etcetera.
Close your eyes to a few of the yes in
your nine to five. Don't say no, but avoid and
immediate yes. Like the apps on your phone, everyone in
your nine to five is eyeing the most precious commodity

(03:43):
of your life. Time. When you own your time and
decide where to invest, your nine to five yields immense returns.
Saying no needs courage, but not saying yes is easy.
Stay quiet, practice silence. When decision making strikes, you give

(04:05):
yourself a few seconds before blurting out that yes. These
few seconds can help you make the most of your time.
Saying yes can be the reason you are unproductive at
the workplace. Distraction number three sending a lot of emails.

(04:25):
Emails have become the de facto first task of the day. Friends,
control your outbox. You don't have control over your inbox.
One of the success barometers of your nine to five
day is how you control your out box. When the
person you wish to reach is a phone call or
a short walk away, don't use an email. I know

(04:47):
people who send a birthday wish in an email. Email
is a nuisance They were not when someone created it,
But our laziness towards walking and of a larger than
life ego stops us from making the right use of
this simple technology. Emails are a boon, but the unintended

(05:13):
consequences have led to a complete misuse of its purpose.
Distraction Number four. Putting recurring meetings on the calendar. Your
boss's secretary puts a recurring calendar of thirty minutes. The
meeting is scheduled for the next thirty days. On your calendar,
it's a complete farce. A task that needs a meeting

(05:35):
at the same time for the same duration for the
next thirty days probably is not good enough for your
attention and energy. Find an alternative instead. Recurring meetings are
a sign a sign that someone needs more updates or
they need a structure to the work you are working,

(05:55):
So find an easier way to bring that updates to
the person who wants. If the recurring meeting is still unavoidable,
keep it a standing meeting and request the convenor to
cut the duration by half. After the first meeting. If
you think you don't have control over your time. You

(06:17):
are wrong. Finally, distraction number five news and social media.
There is no news in the world that you will
come to know. First, avoid the foremo, and that will
solve many of your distraction problems. Your smartphone has become
a culprit for your lack of ability to focus, a

(06:39):
lack of interest in work. If one of the web
browser and a laptop or mobile is a news platform,
switch it off. You're not going to miss anything. Instead,
you will add a lot of positive mental space to
your life. Friends. Before we end, let me give you
a few more tips to make your workspace your nine

(07:01):
to five job more productive and focused. First, carry healthy
snacks with you, preferably fruits, because hunger can cause distractions. Second,
external noise is avoidable. Don't make it an excuse to
hamper your focus. Use headphones to bring back the concentration. Third,

(07:22):
hydrate your body. Lack of water in the body can
make you feel tired. Fourth, always have a to do
list in front of you. It helps you avoid unwanted
excursions into the wild space called nine to five. Fifth,
respect time. Always be on time because when you improve discipline,

(07:44):
it evaporates and catches others. Two friends, nine to five
is the reason behind the world we see today. If
entrepreneurs are important to the world, the people like you
and me creating these entrepreneurs are equally important. And when
we see the nine to five differently, the nine to
five will see us differently. With that, friends, join me

(08:08):
in the next episode of be Better Bid by Bit.
My two books, be Better Bid by Bit and my
daily five minute Gratitude Journal, are available on a Maazon,
so grab your copies and leave me a feedback till
next time. Bye bye, Let's be better bid Bye Bit.
