Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah today and welcome to the first episode of the
newly created BGP Monday Recap podcast, where I'm going to
be going through and discussing the weekends racing, a quick
review of the best bits from the lads from the
weekends and any maybe notes to take away from their performance.
We'll also chat through anything we've seen over the weekend
(00:20):
and hopefully point out a few market changes and as
a result of the weekend's racing.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
First of all, we'll go jump in and we'll do
a quick review.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Of the Bliss Bit and the all new Harness Halo
first up Friday night.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
It was the Harness Halo.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
We had raced ten at Addington or Horse called Ocean
Breeze to run top four.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Unfortunately, didn't quite go the way that we wanted it to.
Didn't have the race panning out quite like this.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
We were hoping that it was maybe going to ping
the gate and get across to the markers and potentially
get a little bit of a softer run and get
a chance to come through.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Unfortunately, that's not the way that it worked out.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Wasn't in an ideal position and sort of didn't really
look like it wanted.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
To be there. In all honesty. So that's all good.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
We'll go again with a harness halo and hopefully, moving
forward we'll be able to start finding you some winners
and getting you paid. A review of the Blessed Bit
Turn me On rating sixty five, twenty four hundred at
Teterapa on Saturday. I'm not sort of really sure what
happening happened here. Come around the corner. It looked like
it was traveling well when it hit the lead and
(01:27):
I thought, oh gee, where's the goats? Found us one here?
But yeah, it just didn't maybe quite handle the track
as well as it could have. It's still run on okay,
but yeah, just really looked like it paddled and struggled
a little bit there. So might have missed the mark
on that one, but definitely a horse to follow in
the future.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Potentially we see it maybe get back on a.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Slightly better track than a heavy nine I think it
was on Saturday, So we'll keep an eye out for
Turn me On, maybe over a little bit more distance
as well.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Looks like it's, you know, a nice stay with a
decent future.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Right next up we'll go through and we'll have a
look at A review of the best bets from the weekend,
and we'll start on your Friday night at Addington and
scan Man almost pulled the miracle. He had McAndrew Aviator
and race seven and here gee was he almost pulled
it off. This horse done almost everything that he thought
(02:26):
it would have ping ping the start and finally got
to the lead. It probably had to do maybe a
touch more work to get to the lead than maybe
would have been ideal, especially in a fresh up state,
But yeah, he was looking good coming into the home turn,
and just you know, with racing, some of those horses
(02:47):
that got softer runs on the markers ended up bombing
him and getting over the top lake. But nonetheless still
a really good run in a fresh up state and
I think he's a horse worth following in the lead
up to the cup.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
YEP.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Next up we look at Fitzi's best, which was race
two horse called Brando and probably got just a touch
unlucky I reckon and it got to the markers, it
got in the trail, and then coming around the home bend,
the leader sort of just stopped maybe at a crucial time.
It wasn't hugely obvious, but I think it just maybe
(03:22):
lost a little bit of momentum at the wrong time,
and I think that cost it the win.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Take nothing away from the winner.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I think it went really well, but I do believe
that Brandon maybe just losing that touch of momentum there
maybe cost it. So fresh up, I reckon we follow
this horse second up. As we know from the last
couple of seasons, the lads are pretty good at finding
good quality horses, and you know, if they don't win
the week that we tipped them, the odds are in
(03:51):
their favor to win sort of one of their next
couple of starts. So follow this horse because I reckon
you will get paid in the next couple of starts.
Gatso went to Addington Race eight as well, was the Lendy.
I don't think this horse enjoyed being back stuck up
on the markers three back on the inside.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
It's a sort of big.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Striding, strapping horse and it sort of mucked around a
little bit and then did it end up getting out
at the right stage, But it sort of looked like
a little bit of a sit and sprint home, which
maybe didn't suit him because when the pace really went
on at about the sort of three three to four
hundred meter market looked like it was maybe a little
(04:30):
bit flat footed, but he did get out and found
some clear air and did start to come home nicely again,
fresh up, and I think maybe with a different run
in its next start and a little bit more race
fitness on its sides, Lendy, I think this.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Is one to follow as well.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
So I reckon follow this horse and you'll be getting
paid in the next couple of starts as well. Maddie
Markham had missed the love not an ideal run against
some of the very best. With a better run, he
might have a show, but just I think he was
just maybe a touch out class I think the way
that we were looking at this one, or that Mattie
Markham was looking at this one, is that he had
(05:08):
fitness on his side over some of the key race rivals,
and so hoping that that was.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Gonna be the edge.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
But I think it just showed the other two, Mighty
Logan and Sunny's Sister were maybe just a little bit
more classy.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Matt Daddy met.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Daddy's best was at Tarapa, raced him La Mesquita and
it got back in the running, and to be honest,
didn't really look happy on the heavy track. One thing
I did take away from it, and if you go
back and look at the replays is this horse really
tried hard. It didn't give up, and it fought all
the way through to the line. So I think, watch
(05:44):
out for this horse and look look look to it
when it gets on a slightly bitter track, maybe even
a you know, soft to the good range, and I
think you'll find that this horse will be will be
putting in a performance.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
I had Sam's dut.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
At Mooney Valley and sort of almost everything went the
way that I thought it would go.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
It got back and flashed home like a rocket ship.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
I think they needed to be a little bit more
pace early to really bring him into it. But look,
this horse is a Flemington straight specialist, so watch out
for him second up when he gets down the Flemington straight.
He's got a really powerful finish and he loves that
straight track at Flemington. So Sonsdu is one to follow
this spring, and I think we could see this horse
(06:31):
and some of the better sprint races at down the
Flemington strait this season as well, which is really exciting.
Kemmy's got Us kicked off in the day to Upper
race too to suit yourself. It was an outstanding way
to start the day. Ten out of ten ride from
Ryan Elliott just yeah, stayed out of the early burn
(06:52):
and just smoked this pipe on the back of the
few leaders, got out at the right time and yeah,
started put them away nicely. Next up we had Ted's
best bet, which was Race six Diamond Jack. He opened
at two point seven I think on the day closed
maybe even money favorite, and she whiz.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
He had to fight for that win.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
He had horses on both sides coming up and putting
him under siege with about one hundred and fifty to go,
but yeah, he really fought them off bravely and put
them away, and you know, he was clearly the best
horse in the race and that showed so Ted. It's
a new year, but it's the same old Ted, and
he's just back to tipping winners. And then, of course
the Goat's best bet was turn me On, which was
(07:35):
the blest bet and we've already covered that.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Next up, we'll go for a little bit of.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
A review of the Foxbridge Plate and a cause Bonnie
Lass took out the fox Bridge Plate this year. It
was a great ride and behind the leaders just waited patiently,
maybe on the sort of worst part of the track
as well, but just on the point of the bend,
found the right gaps and got out onto the better
part of the track and just really powered away.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
She looked, she looked outstanding.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Was interesting to see when skew Whiff came up on
the inside of her the way that Bonnie Lass just
really knuckled down Pindarea's back and really went on with
the job. Bonnie Lass is just such an outstanding horse.
Now she's won stakes races at two, three, four, five,
and now six.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Gee, where's that'll be a horse to own?
Speaker 1 (08:23):
He like as an owner, you just get absolutely thrills
every season. For four seasons, is yeah, for five seasons
actually is Yeah, it's just great. The other notable runs
I thought were Malei Ston he came from really far
back to grab second. And really interesting this horse because
(08:44):
at the end of last season he sort of did
put in a few really nice runs and looks like
a horse that's starting to get back to his best.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I'm not quite sure where his.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Best distances, but I reckon it's probably going to be
somewhere around to sixteen hundred.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
So yeah, let's see.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
I don't know what the futures market's saying for the
arrow Field, but yeah, potentially a little bit of place
money there. We also see why Tat come from quite
a far way back. He did get really far back
in the running early on and then sort of just
did not go inside.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
A horse win around all runners, ran.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Home nicely for fourth, So I think he's going to
be one to follow as well, and then of course
punter or run a nice race as well. Look, we'll
be keeping a close eye on him this spring and
won't be missing out this time because yeah, he burned
us a couple of times last year.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
And of course Mustang Valley come back.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Well, you know, twelve hundred I think was always going
to be sort of short of its best distance. It
yet run really well for twelve and I think we
watch out for this one. If it gets up in
a little bit more distance and we get a wet track,
I think we might see Mustang Valley really come into
it and pick up, yeah, pick up another nice.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Win this year. The other No.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
One I noted was sharp and smart, which, yeah, he
was miles behind with sort of four hundred left to go.
I'm not sort of he was left a little bit
flat footed when they all started sprinting, But yeah, gee
was he picked up and he really came came into it.
With two hundred left to go, he going the race
(10:20):
was all over, but yeah, he really just started to
find the line nicely and looks as though, you know,
when he starts to step up and trip, he might
be sort of back somewhere near what we've seen a
few years ago, and it'd.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Be great to see him back.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
I was a great three year old, had a bit
of a tough season last season, but it'd be really
good to see him come back. Right, let's go and
jump through the trials reports.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Anything notable.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Luckily, last week we had three trials going around at
Talpo before the races, and we've seen some really quality
horses going around.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
The first trial we seen.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
A very very nice horse return and of course I
think we had a three hundred thousand dollars bet on
this horse at the Karakamillions last year and it runs second.
Unfortunately we just missed, but it's faraly one and she
was very impressive as well.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Looking to kick off in the Tarzano.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
You're getting six dollars for top three on this horse
at the moment, and as we've seen over the weekend
races like the Tarzano and these early spring races tend
to throw up one at odds in the top three,
So six dollars for Fara Leoni is maybe worth having
a little bit of a look at. Grail Seeker look
to have returned super as well, under an absolute stranglehold
(11:38):
the whole way down and running on quite nicely, moved
to strike, trialed nicely as well, done everything that he
needed to do. I'm really looking forward to seeing this horse.
I think it might be kicking off and the hawks
Bay Guineas on its way to a two thousand guineas,
and talking through my own pocket, I would absolutely love
to see this horse win the two thousand guineas. Of course,
(12:00):
we also seen one of the BGP favorites come back
as well, and she looks in good order as well,
and that's Snazzy Tavvy. From everything we've heard in the stable,
it sounds like she's going to have a pretty light
spring and then maybe sort of target some of the
better sort of two thousand meter races in the middle
or later part of the season.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
I would love to see this horse in the Livermore,
but yeah, maybe not this year.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Of course, Cruchetti trialed as well in one of the
other trials on Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
And god, he looks good as well.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
He looks like he's really come on after that run
at Rua Kaka. Hopefully we get a sort of good
or no worse than sort of a soft seven track
at Hastings and we get to see him or all
accounts is that if it's worse than a soft he
is not going. He's going to go straight over to Australia.
And of course he is on a path to the
(12:53):
Golden Eagle. He's currently twelve dollars and look, I reckon,
if he comes out at hasting and does a job
on them, there's probably a good chance you're going to
lose that twelve dollars quite quickly. Obviously, Australia the Golden Eagle,
there's a lot of money on the line.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
He's going to be in a.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Whole different ballpark in terms of the quality of horses
that he's racing, but hey, why not?
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Why not?
Speaker 1 (13:17):
We also see an orchestral step out for the first
time as well, had a really quiet run, but by
all reports that's sort of exactly what they wanted. She
went around, had a little bit of a blow and
they're all extremely happy with her, be very exciting to
see her come back again. I think she's one of
the ones that they're probably after a big three year
old season, looking to have a little bit of a
light spring and just look after her.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
And yeah, I think probably in the autumn is when
we're going to see her.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Maybe you rarely step up to some of these big
time and better races, and hopefully she can fly the
flag for New Zealand again. Right next up, we're going
to go through and have a little review of Australia
and some of the things that we maybe notice.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
First up, have a look at Vas Sestina in the
Wink Steaks.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Wowie, this was an impressive win and she is back, yeah,
getting home nicely. In the closing stages, it looked like
Zugotcha had it all but one. With about one hundred
and fifty to go, she looked like the winner and
Fangirl was running home quite nicely. But Va Sestina just
come back on the inside, potentially on the worst part
(14:25):
of the Strait as well, and just really flew that
last hundred and she looks really good on her way
to a coxplate where she's actually now a joint four
dollar fifty favorite. I think before the Wink Steaks she
was nine dollars for the coxplate. So the bookies have
reacted and they've moved her into four point fifty vas Sestina.
I mean, she was really impressive coming onto the scene
(14:47):
last year, and she looks like she's going to be,
you know, a real challenger for the Cox plate this year.
The other one I've seen as well was my old
friend strathte Man. He continues to have a great record
since going to OZ and he's had three wins now
from five starts or six starts since joining. Mister Chris
(15:07):
Waller Waller make a dollar and looks like he really
suited the dry track today as well. That was the
first run that he's had on a dryer track over there.
All the other starts have been on heavy or soft tracks,
and gee whiz, that last sort of one hundred and
fifty he really powered away and he looks like he
is a very promising stayer for the future. And actually
(15:28):
his last couple of runs over the twenty four hundred
his best work. He's been doing in the last one
hundred meters, so look, this horse might be able to
get up over a bit more distance as well.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
I'm not really sure what.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
The owners and trainers are thinking. I think the Melbourne
Cup nominations potentially come out over the next couple of weeks.
I'm not sure if this horse is maybe quite up
to that level, but potentially in the future of Sydney
Cup or something like that, he might suit going over
the thirty two hundred and we might see this horse,
yeah crack over the thirty two hundred, but yeah, interesting
(16:02):
to see how he goes. Stratte absolutely love him. He
just keeps paying the bills. How good.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
Madi puntoike Q.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Missed a six and a half k multi on his
best bet for the day, which was absolutely heartbreaking for him.
He managed to get a two K collect multi home
which sort of healed the wounds a little bit. But yeah,
gee whiz that that.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Hurts when you get knocked down like that.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
The other Australian one that a notable one that I
wanted to go through was have a little bit of
a chat about Jolly Starr and actually Dave O'Leary, who
is the standard stallion manager at Cambridge stud Funny enough,
we do the weekly picks where everyone in the community
gets to pick what their best bet is. David Larry
(16:51):
happened to be the one that was randomly selected and
his best bet for the week was Jolly Star, so
he got one hundred dollars to win on it. And
then it also just turned out that he happened to
be the stallion manager at Cambridge stud which is just
absolutely outstanding, so he got one hundred dollars on Jolly Starr.
I think it was three dollars ten, So three hundred
(17:11):
and ten dollars in Dava Larry's bank account.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
How good and how good was Jolly Starr?
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Like, man, she just absolutely pants them and she just
done it with these.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
She was eased down at the end and looked like
a yeah, you don't want.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
To go sort of the early crow and go to
Lily on these horses. But yeah, she could be anything
and interesting to see the bookies mover her into seven
dollars second favorite for the everest as well. I'm not
quite sure what's going on there and if there's any
news in the background of maybe you know, slottholders looking
to pick this one. Up, but yeah, g was after
seeing that on the weekend she smashed the clock, she
(17:47):
smashed her rivals and looks like a horse of the
future and wouldn't be surprised to see her running around
in the Everest as well. And how good would that
be to see two of our great stables, Cambridge Stud
or sorry our to stud farms Cambridge Stud and Whitehadow
(18:08):
Stud going head to head in the Everest the Kiwi connection.
It would just be great for New Zealand thoroughbred racing,
which you know, for the longest time I haven't necessarily
been associated so much with sprinters, but then to be
going head to head and you know in Australasia's biggest
sprint race would be yeah, outstanding. That's actually probably a
(18:29):
good time now to move into the events that we
have coming up because on Everest day we are doing
the King of the Punt and we're going to try
and find out who the best punter is and BGP,
so we're going to be on course at Allesley. There's
races at Allesley that day and of course the last
race that we can punt on for the competition will
be the.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
Everest, so it'll be a really exciting day.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
Basically, the way the competition works is very similar to
I guess most punters clubs or punters competitions is where
everyone has a starting amount and then it's your job
to turn that money over on the races between the
start time and the everest and whoever has the most
money at the end or got the best result at
(19:14):
the end of the day is the King of the
Punt and we're gonna have a bunch of prizes and
all of those things are gonna be sorted out of
the next couple of weeks, So King of the Punt Allisley.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
That's gonna be really.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
Exciting and we're looking forward to having that on Everest Day.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
Next up as well.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
We're gonna also have New Zealand Cup Week, so New
Zealand Cup Week we're gonna be doing a Punters Club
from the Thursday to the Saturday, so it's gonna be
a three day punters club.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
We've got.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
The Harness at Ashburton on Thursday, the Dogs at Addington
on Thursday night, then we've got the Harness on Friday
at the New Twilight Meeting with the two new slot races,
and then of course we've got New Zealand Cup Day
on the Saturday at Ricking In. It's going to be
a huge old go punters club for those three days.
(20:11):
We're also going to be doing or hosting events that's
sort of two different places. So we're going to host
an event at the Dogs on the Thursday. There's more
details to come out over these and ticket links will
be out over the next few weeks, but we'll be
hosting whoever wants to come along for the Dogs on
that Thursday night, and then we're also going to be
hosting an event on the Friday at the Harness on Course,
(20:35):
which is the Twilight Meeting now, which is going to
be an outstanding night. So tickets will be available for
both of those events. And then on the Saturday, I
mean it's quite hard to sort of organize and set
up events for that Saturday because for the most part,
New Zealand Cup Day, Yeah, it sells out anyway, so
we suggest just get in early and get your tickets
(20:56):
for that one. And of course we're going to be
doing a bunch of content and doing things throughout day,
but we're not going to be sort of officially holding
an event together and that's sort of horses to follow
out of the weekend. Pundock, you mentioned that Voban won
at York over the weekend is now back to equal
(21:16):
favorite in the Melbourne Cup. We're still a bit of
time away from the Melbourne Cup, but that's quite interesting
to see that horse back on track. Of course, I
think it was the favorite for the Melbourne Cup last year.
Weban but yeah, let's see how they go. They want
to bring it back and they want to go again.
You know, I'm not sure we've seen the best of
it here last year, but it'll be interesting to see
(21:38):
if it comes back to goat also mentioned that Joshua
Brown sectionally was really good and that'll be one that
we'll be following moving forward, So keep an eye out for.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Joshua Brown on its next start.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
And just to wrap it up quickly, the Best of
BGP powered by Trackside will be back next week along
with the Friday Phillip. So we'll be going into the
studio and doing the recording of the Best of BGP
and the Friday Phillip. Those are going to be shared
across the Friday Night Lights for the Harness and then
hopefully across the Punter's Lounge and a few different things
(22:15):
throughout the day on track side as well for the
best of BGP right, thanks for joining us, happy punting,
and we'll see you back in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
For the Monday recap for BGP
