for d So on the line, you've got Derek, but
we are also joined by a we've been dying to
get on the line for a few years here. He's
had some ups and downs, but he is on a
massive upright now. If you've been following this guy on
social media, he is doing things we could have never
(01:09):
dreamt of anybody doing. This guy is a world of
positivity out there. We are blessed to be joined by
mister Nelson Thomas.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
How are you, Nelly?
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Hey? What's that? What's up? Everyone? What's that? What's up?
I am doing amazing, amazing, amazing. Happy to be here,
Happy to be here. Long time coming. I told you
fellas in the beginning, I couldn't wait to talk to you.
We're finally here. We are following here.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, No, Nelson really appreciates your time. I dare I
say it's a breadth of fresh air to kind of
take a break from season forty one, because I feel
like I feel like I need a break from fucking
season forty one. And Nelly, I don't know if you've
been watching or how in tune you are with the
Challenge universe now that you've kind of stepped away for
(01:54):
a little bit. But just to remind people, Okay, Nelson
has been on ten seasons of the Challenge. Uh it's uh,
I think ten seasons in seven years, nine and two
elimination record, which I think THEO just kind of caught you.
I think you and THEO are actually have the same
elimination record. Uh at this point, is it safe to
(02:17):
say I'm trying to I'm trying to. I just watched
the episode for next week and yeah, I'm online, I'm
in line here, Scott. But my man, you know, it's
like it's weird. It's almost like like like we've been
doing Challenge Mania for like eight years now and Nelson
is now like an OG and uh, you know, to
have an og, you know, with with with uh, you know,
(02:37):
make their presence on Challenge Mania after like a long
layoff is is uh you know, it's it's it's again
like I said, it's a breadth of fresh air. Have
people told you you are like a breadth of fresh
air lately, Nelson? Or is it just me because I'm
looking at this I'm looking at this guy right here,
and uh, this a fresh air.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Man.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Welcome back to Challenge Manya and the Challenge Universe. How
you've been man, what the fuck's been going on? Tell
us what you've been doing.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Man.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
We'll get back to the ups, and we'll get to
the ups and downs and get caught up. But like,
how how are you like today? How are you like
right now? After running this five k and fucking running?
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Man?
Speaker 3 (03:20):
I just can't imagine. Man, how are you doing?
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Man?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
What's going on in your world?
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Man? I'm doing amazing. You know, it's been a two
years coming and when I've made that decision, you know,
I never thought i'd see a day that I'd be
able to run and jump and you know, even do
all the things a lot man, To be honest with you,
a lot more better than I was, because you pay
(03:46):
attention to the small details, because of every step matters. So,
you know, being able to run that five k with
my mom and my brother Corey right beside me, the
two people that were there when I'm ain't the big
biggest decision of my life. You know, that race wasn't
about the time, you know, it wasn't about the accolades.
(04:10):
It was more about just being in the moment with
my mom, seeing the woman that you know was right
beside me the entire time, and to finish that race
with her smile. You know, it brought so much joy
to me and it just gives me so much respect
to all the mothers out there. Shout out to all
the moms out there. Man, y'all, God gifts to earth.
(04:32):
You know, your love's wing up. You love us when
you're down. And for her to finish that race was amazing.
And not just my mother, you know Corey too. You know,
he was there when I made the decision. And y'all
know Corey, you're in our first final together, you know,
and Challenge twenty nine and to be here to run
(04:54):
that five k with him and just jump for joy
and it was amazing. Man. Having the kids there, Writer
Taylor and shout out to run Travis run. Man. He's
changing lives and he's moving people in us. To be
around the fans and for so many people to come
up to me to say I'm an inspiration and I
(05:16):
bring so much joy to them and I give them hope.
You know that brings tears to me and it brings
it up, blits me. But what they don't know is
that they brought me back to life, you know, and
not only in them, you know God and you know
my faith and family and friends. So it was a blessing.
That was a joy, and that run wasn't just for me.
(05:38):
It was for everyone that supported me, and everyone that
needs a light, and everyone that's in the hospital. And
you know, I've been there, I've been down, I've been
depressed at the moments, and I never thought I'd see
the light. But everyone's lane is different, everyone's story is different,
and it's just this is just a chapter. If you're
(05:59):
in a bad place right now, the chapter will change,
and it changed for me so and this one's very
one outen, So thank you for everyone to tune into
that in like I say, I feel good, I feel strong,
feel great, I'm glad.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
It's look so it's about, like you said, probably a
little over two years, I think you know, since your accident,
and obviously you've had, like you said, so many ups
and downs, so many life choices to have made, and
how you've rebounded from those obviously, and you now, you know,
running this five K and people being able to kind
of benefit from your story, take inspiration from your story,
and obviously, as Derek mentions, you're an og on this
(06:36):
show called The Challenge, where as you know from being
on it for so long, people love you, people follow you,
people support you, people care about you. I'm sure people
were heartbroken when they heard about your accident. People have
been following your journey from step one to step twelve
or step thirteen or wherever we're at right now. But
for people who, let's say, are listening to this or
(06:57):
watching this and they're not fully plugged into your so
so media, they haven't heard the you know, three or
four other really lengthy podcast interviews I've seen you do
where you really kind of dove into the accident and
the decision making both on that day but then after
the fact, and deciding to get amputated and things like that.
I've watched those, and honestly, I was inspired by those,
and you know, it took a lot of I think,
(07:18):
you know, what's the word. It took a lot of
guts to finally be able to speak about this openly
and things like that. But for those not like me,
are you able to kind of catch our audience up
what happened a few years ago and the lengthy journey,
Like you said, you know, it wasn't the next day
that you decided to make this monumental change that you've
now fully rebounded from. So to the challenge maniacs out
(07:38):
there that may be heard through the great Vinos, something
happened to Nelson Because I'll be honest, like we put
up that you were coming on the show. A lot
of the comments were like where's he been? Some of
the comments were like is he gonna be on next season?
Some of the and then people are saying, hey, you
didn't hear about this, and you hear about that, so
you'd actually be surprised. Are you able to kind of
catch up our audience who maybe hasn't been following since
day one like we have?
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Yeah, no doubt, no doubt. I think that's all out
for all the OG's out there. I think that's the
hardest question we get after we're not seeing on the
show for a while, When are you coming back? So
all the fans out there, and it's really not up
to us, It's really not up you get that phone called.
Even if you do get that phone call, nothing is guaranteed.
(08:21):
So now I get it. It's a hard question, and
it is because you those fans really do want to
see you back and they really want to see you thrive.
So and Derek, Man, your fans are crazy about you.
So I see that and shout out to you. Man,
this season, I see you killing it. I know you
just came back from an injury too. But to catch
everyone up, uh, man, you know, it wasn't an accident.
(08:47):
I made a bad choice. I was drinking and driving.
I was going through a lot of mental stuff, dealing
with our family issues, and you know, I bottled. It
was all bottled in. I kept it inside and and
it finally came to the top. It finally rose, and
you know, I made a decision to where It's like,
(09:08):
I had a whole year to fix my foot after
that car accident, you know, and I had eight surgeries.
We're all the way to Mexico against themselves. Nothing was
worth it, nothing was working, you know. So I went
into a dark place, which I think everyone has to do,
and I prayed and I looked to my mom, I
looked at my friends, and I looked to God and
(09:31):
I asked for a answer, and I really had to
fall hard. Everything came to top, and I really had
to be honest with myself and take responsibility and let
the world know. You know, it's okay. We're not perfect.
I made a bad choice that night, and I own it.
But I made the decision to cut my foot off
(09:52):
after the doctor gave me a decision. I had options.
I had over three to four options TTC fusion in confusion.
But one thing the doctor did tell me is that
I wouldn't be able to run, I wouldn't be able
to jump, I wouldn't do all the things I'd love
to do in life and that I was gifted with.
And I thought about it. I did my due diligence,
(10:15):
talk to people, talked to amputees, and one of the
things they did tell me is what they regret is
that they wish they would have made the decisions sooner.
And what I mean by that, I mean they wish
they would have cut their foot off sooner because they
had so much time. And time is an essence. It's
a gift that we have on this world that we
take for granted until we fall deep in realized like damn,
(10:39):
I wasted a lot of time and I have all
this time with my family and friends and that people
love it. What am I doing? So I had to
ask myself that and I made the decision. I walked
into the house with strong people by my side, my mom,
(11:03):
my brother, and my friends, and told the doctor to
cut my foot off. March fifth of twenty twenty four
my journey began. I closed that chapter in my life.
I forgave myself and he forgives me. And I know
I heard a lot of people, you know, and a
lot of people are still hurting from the decision I made.
But I knew that, you know, I'm still here for
(11:24):
a reason, and I could be a vehicle a shield
for other people that I've made a bad decision in
their life. And I've been that. And I told myself
there's no adversity that I cannot conquer. So I started
working out, I started training. I never gave up on
myself and I kept the faith and I'm stronger, faster
(11:48):
than I ever was. I jump higher than I ever did.
And with all that being said, it wasn't about me.
You know, these things are amazing, but it was about
the journey and of people lives. I've been able to
change throughout that I've been able to work out a gym.
I moved to Dallas, Texas. I was living in Austin.
Shout to Austin. Those are my people. I loved y'all.
(12:10):
But I felt like my journey took me to Dallas, Texas,
to a gym called ATF Adaptive Training, foundation, which they
helped veterans and people with limb laws and people that
go through some traumatic things and bring them back to life.
Won't you walk into that gym and walk out a
different person, not just physically but mentally and spiritually. You know,
(12:32):
you find yourself, You find your purpose. And my purpose
was which I found, was to help others and show
that look, if I can do it, you can do it.
If you want to be this athlete, if you want
to run, jump, play with your kids again, get out
of bed without your back hurt, and I can help
you do those things. And he did. He showed me
the way I learned, and I had to start from
(12:52):
the basics. I had to put in the time. I
had to give the sweat to tears, and even the
dark days when I thought like what am I doing?
Why am I doing this? Why am I getting up
at five a m To do these push ups and
run these miles or lift this weight? But there was
a reason behind everything. We all want things. Now that
I realized, things are gifted to us when the time
is right, and that's what happened to me. So throughout
(13:15):
that time, you know, I've been able to move different,
change lives and all that and get back. So that's
a little thing, that's a little story all put into
one everybody. And I'm here, I'm here, and everybody's asking me,
are you ready take a look? I'm ready. I think
the work speaks for itself.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Dude, fuck yeah, man, hey, wait yeah, dude, it's incredible.
It's incredible too to hear you speak about it and
such a like just taking it, you know, and and
then accepting like that's that's not I think easy for
(13:58):
anyone to let go through. But to hear you say
like I made a decision for them to cut my
foot off like that is just mind blowing in itself.
I would have no idea how I would go get
through that. So like the fact that that picture that
I just saw from the Travis Barker run and me
(14:18):
talking about you being a breath or fresh air, like
that's what you are, man, And I'm so glad that
you you're continuing to inspire people because in the during
the challenge years, you put a lot of smiles on
people's faces. What you're doing now is like, is unbelievable.
And I do think that, you know, God has a
has a a h a plan for all of us,
(14:42):
and like we just have to accept that, like whatever
has happened, like that, that's God's plan. I think that's
where you are. And you know, I don't have to
tell you that. I just know that you're you're You're
a God guy and you have to you have to
be and I'm there with you. So like, congratulate on
making it this far. And me and Scott have had
(15:03):
this conversation about you coming back to the challenge and
like the possibilities of it. And I mentioned THEO also
at the top of the podcast, and you guys having
the same almost the same elimination record at this moment
in time in the world. And he was coming from
a blind eye, like he lost an eye. He was
not accepted back into the challenge, not because of his
(15:24):
own you know, uh validation, but because of you know,
the doctors, the powers that be the challenge, God's doctors
that be behind the scenes. And you know, me and
Scott had talked about like when's it gonna be his change?
You know, are they gonna let him back in? And
Scott had mentioned that there was a girl with a
(15:44):
prosthetic on Survivor. So like seeing you like where you
are now. The fact that you can run, jump, you know,
do everything that a normal challenger, challenge, contestant, challenge player,
challenge athlete can do to me from like me experiencing
me coming off a torn acl and jumping back into
(16:05):
this fucking thing, climbing that mountain seven months postop. I
didn't think I could do that. That was a win
for me. Like seeing you run the five k and
I don't know what you're doing in your everyday life,
but the fact that you're you're saying, Okay, I just
ran a five k at the Travis Barker thing, which,
by the way, I've been seeing this on the Kardashians
because my wife watches it, so I'm actually interested in
(16:28):
the fuck is going on. But the fact that you're like, well,
what's next? What challenges next? You didn't actually say what
challenge the challenge is next? You said, like, am I
gonna do a you know, a tough mutter or a
spartan race or a ten k? Like like what's next?
Like I know, personally just from coming from an injury,
(16:49):
not even close to what you went through, Like how
like what a milestone it is to have like done
what you just did. Because when I finished that mountain
on this season of forty one, with not finishing in
last place, finishing in the middle of the pack, still
had my bumps road I had, dude, I had problems
(17:11):
going down the mountain, down the mountain, was going up
the mountain. I was fucking cooking going down the mountain.
I had some trouble. But at the end, I was like, man,
I fucking did that, and I think that you can
do it. I think that you like me seeing and
being a part of the challenge. I think that you
are ready for the challenge. Now the question is obviously
(17:34):
on everyone's mind is are you ready for the challenge?
What is gonna hold them back? Have you been in
conversations with them? We've heard the Theo story. If you
guys haven't heard the Theo podcast, I think not too
long ago, or was it maybe last season Scott season
forty where he really talked about the eye and coming
(17:54):
back and the issues that he had behind the scenes.
But eventually, after like three years of him knocking on
their door, they finally knocked back. So the question is
is like, how close are you to gracing our screens
on the challenge again? Because physically, you look like you're.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
Ready right right right, no doubt, no doubt, and you
want to do that. You know, well, let's talk about it.
You know, when I first came on to the challenge,
you know, you see these guys doing amazing things, aka Jordan.
You know, the challenge is all about adapting and being
(18:33):
able to survive, you know, regardless what comes your way, right,
you never know, and shout out to Jordan, He's proved
everyone right. Shout out to theal for coming back because
he proved everyone right. And it wasn't about proving everyone right,
I think and I've learned that it was about provenent
it to yourself. It was about Okay, Derek, can you
(18:53):
really make it up that? Now? Can you really make
it back down? I think it was all about proved
it to yourself, And once you realize you can do it,
you was like, Okay, what's next? And I think that's
when it comes down to me, you know, being in
this challenged universe, being able to have this opportunity, you know,
for nine season and having some unfinished business, being so
(19:15):
close to winning. You know, I felt like maybe it
was for me being at this point and learning how
to adapt and how to move throughout these things. Yeah,
the question is, yeah, I'm ready, Like I would love to.
I would love to see what I can bring to
the table. Not only am I representing myself, you know,
(19:36):
I represent every every able body, living, lost person out
there showing that Look, if I can do it, you
can do it, you know. So I'll have a team
behind me. So it's like yeah, and like I said,
I want to win and we all do right there?
You know you got that, like, come on, you know it.
(19:59):
You have some unfinished business. That's what brings us back.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
Yes, well, before we before we get into what you
know might come into play, whether or not it does
eventually happen, whether it's now or later, I guess you know.
First I'll give a chance to answer Derek's question. Has
there been any talks with them so far yet?
Speaker 4 (20:19):
Man, I'm talking to a few shows, you know, but
I can't speak on any shows that have called me
or not called me.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Okay, Well, because I was gonna say, like I mean,
I think I think look the Challenge, as I'm sure
you know now two years into this, the Challenge fan
base is so supportive and and we were watching it
because I remember when it happened. You know, the just
the Challenge cast members i'd imagine people from behind the scenes,
(20:51):
but then also just the countless fans. Challenge maniacs is
what we call them, rushing to your aid. And you know,
whether it's the GoFundMe or just well wishes or texts
or DMS or comments or this or that, you know,
they are very very supportive because they care that much
about you guys. The flip side of that coin is
they care a lot. They care a lot when things
(21:13):
are good, and they care sometimes even more so when
things are bad or where there's there's a.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Negative angle to something.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
And I know that the way that the information came
out about the accident was that at first all we
learned was, hey, Nelsa was in a really bad accident,
and everyone.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
Just rushed to your aid, us included right.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
And then as information began to trickle out, as you've
now been very candid about, you know, people began to
kind of endoses find out that you know, it was
a drunk driving accident. Now everyone can choose to feel
about it how they want to feel. I personally feel
that because it was a other than yourself and other
than your your foot, a victimless accident, that there wasn't
(21:53):
another car at the other end of this, that there
isn't another victim. I choose personally to look at it
as obviously it's terrible mistake you made, but one that
I'm going to allow you to learn from and I'm
hopefully going to watch other people learn from your mistakes.
And obviously when you look at the foot and how
your life has changed, you've paid for it in a
myriad of ways. And that's before we even get to
the other financial hardships and everything and legal and everything
(22:15):
like that.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Okay, that's how I choose to feel about it.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
But other people, as I'm sure you've heard and read
and know, when they hear drunk driving, they immediately throw
you out with the bathwater. You know, they don't care
about inspirational stories. They want their money back, whatever it is.
And obviously it's taken a while for you to speak
on it, but i'd love to get your take on
processing that and whether or not there was a little
bit of regret for and I'm sure some of it
(22:39):
again might have been legal but based or whatever, you know,
having people find out on a delay and having it
kind of shaped the way that they then you know,
you know, felt about the way that they had cared
initially or supported initially things like that, because I wondered
if some of that might get in the way of
a reality show per se, or even specifically the challenge
(23:00):
and you know, wanting to run to bring you back
and tell that story because to me, I, like I said,
I choose to look at the positive of it, and
your story to me going forward especially is just a
beacon of positivity that people can learn from, even when
you include the mistakes. But there's obviously a lot of
other people that disagree. When they hear the term drunk driving,
they're just saying all bets are off. This person doesn't
(23:21):
deserve a platform, doesn't deserve a shot of money, whatever
it is.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
So what do you say to those people. I want
to give you a chance to just talk to those people.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
Yeah, man, I want to talk to people first that
are going through the same thing I'm going to. In
order to heal, you need to shut that off. You know,
I didn't know that, and I think that I learned
that in that process. So if I can give that
(23:51):
to everyone that's going through any kind of trauma. Please
shut the media off, because it's going to be ten
times harder to heal with all this through your head
and trying to figure out how can I walk again
on whatever the case may be. But to speak to
everyone out there, you know, you've got to respect everyone's emotions,
(24:16):
you know, regardless of how you feel or if I
feel like I've paid my dues. You know a lot
of people have came up to me and said, Nelson,
you've paid your dues, You've gone through what you've gone through,
But that's how you feel. That someone else can feel
a different way because they've gone through something, or they've
lost somebody, or whatever the case may be. So I
(24:39):
got to respect their feelings. So my arm's open to
everyone out there. You know, I hope that with every
step I take, in every decision I make throughout this
time i'm here, you know it's the right decision. I'm
not perfect. This is why I am on reality TV.
(25:00):
I show who I am. I don't hide throughout the closets.
I'm not perfect. This is why they picked me because
I'm not scared to be me. I'm not scared to
speak the truth, and it's not always right it's not
always wrong. I could have been right ship who knows,
but I was wrong. But I'm here to let you know.
I own that and I've learned from that. And not
(25:22):
every decision I'm gonna make is gonna be something you like.
I'm gonna keep doing me and I'm gonna keep learning
and growing and I respect everyone's emotions out there. That's it, man, Well.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
Said, No, dude, I mean, like I don't. To be honest,
I don't know if I would have been able to
answer better than that, because like, I like, that was
a fucking hard ass question. Jesus Christ. I was sitting
here like, oh God, where the fuck's he going with this?
Speaker 1 (25:48):
I gotta do it.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
Thank you for answering that, Nelson, because dude, I was
just like, oh God, but any but dude, you're you're
handling this again so well that again, I think I
think it's it's work. It's despite what like people have
gone through, and they've probably like those people have gone
through probably a lot of things to write him off,
(26:13):
but like the fact of the matter is is like
we are mistake makers, and you know, that's you know, unfortunately,
that's that's life. Like people are going to make mistakes.
Like I remember just me going through like reality TV
in general, and people would call me out on certain
things and be like, you're a fucking asshole for this. Oh,
(26:34):
I remember you for being an asshole for that, And
I'm like, don't act like you've never gotten drunk and
done something fucking stupid. It's just because it's not been
on TV. Now. Granted, this is a different, different level
of messing up. Like he obviously lost his leg, and
you know, he's obviously very sorry for it, and he's
(26:56):
very apologetic towards everyone that feels, you know, you know,
in it negative way. Regardless of what he says right
now and what I'm saying right now, they may still
hate you for what happened, even though you're paying the price.
But like you know, like like you said, like we're
mistake makers, and like all we can do is go
and learn from our situation and in life in general,
(27:17):
whoever's listening to this and telling us both to fuck off,
Like there's going to be something that you go through
in life where you know you need some grace and
you need some help, whether it comes from you know,
God or your family or some random ass stranger. Who
fucking was driving by and pulled you out of that
(27:40):
burning car. Like I, I'm sorry, and I'm sorry to
take it here, but like I couldn't stop thinking about
this angel that fucking rescued you, Nelson, like I when
it happened, and I saw the footage from the burning
car and thank god, you're you're alive from that. It
(28:01):
was a burning car. The car was on fire, and
some random guy happened to be an NFL player that
played for the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver kJ Osborne. Out
of all the cars and people that drove by you,
I mean, there must have been within that period of time,
it must have been over one hundred cars that decided
(28:24):
to drive past. But this one guy, I think, with
people inside his car, gets out and he comes in
and and pulls you out. Is do you like, I
just I'm so thankful for that person because I know
you and I'm just I'm just happy that you're alive
(28:46):
from that. Because have you thought about, like if that
person didn't stop, get out of the car and pull
you out, have you, I guess had a conversation with
kJ since it's happened, I'm sure he'd be very happy
to see your progress. But I'm just curious you have
(29:06):
do you have a relationship with to me as an
angel because you're my friend and I know you and
he saved your life, you know.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
No, no doubt, no doubt. Big shot out to kJ
Osborne for being there that night. Now that the story
you just told is not the exact story what happened,
but I'm not going to get into the full story.
But if it wasn't for kJ Osborne being there that night,
(29:35):
you know, those angels wouldn't have appeared to make a
long story short, which I don't mind getting into the story.
And y'all don't have to keep apologizing. You know, it's
I've accepted everything. You know. This is one thing that
I knew about going on podcasts or if I was
to go back on TV, if I wasn't able to
(29:56):
answer these questions, I wasn't able to get be on
reality t be because mentally I wouldn't be ready. So
they don't have to keep apologizing. I expect the hardest
of the hardest questions, and I don't answer these questions
because I'm trying to prove a point or I'm trying
to answer these questions for someone else. I'm trying to
help everyone else that's going throughout the same thing. We
(30:16):
all don't know which way to go. I can only
answer about how I feel and what I've went through
the truth, So don't apologize moving forward, you know, talking
about the accident that night, you know the reason kJ
Osborne was there because he was in an uber and
the uber had stopped, and two different cars have stopped.
(30:36):
I don't know how many cars have passed by, you know,
but I do remember the young lady's voice, which I'm
not going to say her name because I haven't asked
if it was okay, But it was because of the
young lady I got out of that car. She was
from Nigeria and two other people were from Nigeria. K
(31:02):
J Osborne was there, and it was a blessing that
he did call that uber and the uber stop. He
was there and that's how it was caught on film
because he filmed it, you know. And when he was
able to go down there two help the other three
people that pulled me out, he was, you know, the
car was on fire and I was pinned against the
(31:24):
rail and I couldn't go out the driver's seat. And
when I woke up. You know, I hadn't no idea
where I was at. Opened my eyes. I was in hell.
I asked myself what did I do? But then I
heard distinct voice this young ladies and get out the car,
and get out the car, and they opened the passenger door.
When I tried to pull myself out, I was stuck.
I couldn't pull myself out. I had to go back
(31:46):
in pull my foot off. And that's when I think
the whole foot suffered that injury. And the young lady
and the two gentlemen were pulling me out halfway, and
then KG Osborne ran down there to pull me the
rest of you life. And that's when I woke up
in the hospital. So shout out to the young lady,
shout out to the two gentlemen, and shout out to
(32:07):
kJ Osbern because he wasn't able to call that uber
dead night. Who knows?
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Do you think that that now? Because it's interesting. So
it's interesting because Derek went through that whole story. He
added the editorial license about one hundred cars driving by.
You're right now, you know how many cars drove by.
It could have only But that being said, what's interesting
is this was during the time that for whatever reason,
you were staying pretty quiet about the specifics, right, And
I believe there was a story on Monday Night Football
(32:32):
that and look, this is kind of what happens in
life that I'm sure you two have actually been on
the other side of where you know, when something happens,
the headline will often focus on the most famous person involved.
It was a really sad tragedy that ironically I'm not
even mentioning this because Johnny Bananas was present, but John
Elway's agent died recently at a music festival. Johnny Bananas
(32:55):
was there for this, and in the article it was
John Elway's agent dies falls off golf car. They don't
even name him, Like, so there's this weird obsession with
celebrity and making it sort of the most glamorous story.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
And I wonder, now, you know, do you wonder?
Speaker 2 (33:08):
And I know now now you don't want to mention
their names because you don't know if they want to
be mentioned. But has it kind of taken on a
life of its own where now no offense. Derek is
fully crediting kJ with like coming in on a you know,
I believe flying in with a cape. kJ cape and
pulling you out single handedly. But that no offense to
Derek is what. But that's the cliff notes that we
all got, right, we all as just American people who
(33:31):
watch TV and follow the news. That's the cliff notes
we got was famous Vikings wide receiver saves you know,
person in car wreck and we had to do the
math that it was you because you weren't even mentioned
in a lot of these stories. Who weren't mentioned on
the Monday Football thing either. So do you think now
and do like, how do you feel about having, you know,
being tied to sort of him so directly where people
are now giving him necessarily kind of all the credit,
(33:54):
Like do you you kind of just that's the way
the cookie crumbles when it's somebody that famous, like because
I don't think if it was somebody else, they would
have been like random person A who happened to be
in the uber and filmed it deserves to be mentioned
number one in the article before the Nigerian woman and
whoever else?
Speaker 4 (34:08):
Right, right, right? I understand you know in the world
works in mysterious ways. We all want that superhero ending story,
you know, and you know the negativity media sales and
you know, but however, the story was flipped. If it
wasn't for kJ calling that uber, you know, I would
(34:29):
have never been able to be saved. Who knows. So
kJ deserves whatever kJ is getting. It's none of my business.
And to tell people the story, if they asked me,
I tell the truth. I tell her like it is.
I'm not going to make it up for anybody and
make anyone seem less or anybody seem better. So I've
(34:49):
talking at kJ, you know, through THEMS, and you know,
even he even reached out to me after the accident,
and you know, I've heard the story after story, and
I'm not the kind of guy that's just gonna go
wish bad on someone and say, hey, he doesn't deserve
this or you know, that's not my part. The truth
is gonna come out to come out one way or another.
(35:11):
And like I said, he deserves everything he's getting. You know,
he a man.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
You see Amanda going at him by the way, like
when this happened.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
Oh yeah, I don't know if she had heard or whatever.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
She was just guessing, but she was tweeting that.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
She's like she's like, maybe don't film, maybe go help,
you know, And I don't know if she knew more
at the time or what, but she was out there
beating that drum right away.
Speaker 4 (35:36):
You know. And when a man is FBI, let's get
let's get you. She's gonna get down to the needy greed.
Let's be really, you don't get down to it for real.
That's just that's a man. I love it, man, And
shout out to a manute because she was right by
my side. You know. She was calling me every day
and she texts me every day. She helped me out financially,
and I owe her so much. You know. She's such
(35:57):
an amazing person, you know, and she's gonna fight for
me and she wants nothing for the best. And it's
crazy because shout out to MTV and the Challenge. If
it wasn't for them, her and I would have never
had that relationship. And it shows you how the growth
and how people grow and how people have this bond
between each other. So shout out to a lot of
challenges that were there for me.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
So anybody else you want to kill anybody else my
name that fans would be excited to hear, whether they
were there for you, like you said, I mean, whether
it's financially, emotionally, whatever, because fans are always wondering how
real these bonds are. Right when you're a rider die
with somebody on the show, is that really? Because this
is a situation where you find out who your writer
dies are, you know.
Speaker 4 (36:38):
One hundred percent, one hundred percent. You know. I heard
Johnny in his podcast The Idea. You know, I get
it why it's hard for him to make the decisions
he makes, Johnny Banana. It's like, because once you build
these bonds, how do you fucking boat them out the house?
I love you now you feel a different way because
maybe you made the wrong decision and you're outside the house.
(37:01):
They don't like you, hey, and they take it to heart.
So I get why he does what he does and
he doesn't connect these bonds. But during that time I
was going through that. I gotta give a big shot
to Amanda. I gotta give a big shot to Corey
cam Lee, Roy uh Fessi, ct West. You know people
(37:22):
I called for advice and people that were looking out
for me, Casey, Nannie, you know these people. You know,
everyone wants to be there for you. Everyone has everything
going on. Life doesn't stop just because Nelson's hurt. So
even though I'm just dming me or texting me, you know,
shout out the whole Challenge family in the universe. You know,
(37:45):
they didn't turn their backs on me, None of them
have just because I made the wrong decisions. And you know,
they all were there. If it wasn't physically, you know,
they were there emotionally. And a d M a text
always helps and it shows you. It's like, even though
when it comes to this house and it comes to
this money and the decisions we have to make, when
(38:07):
it comes to the real world, they don't turn their
backs to me. And that's what makes such a great
reality cast because we don't hide who we are. We
are who we are throughout the show and outside of
the show. Well I could speak for me, you know.
And I think that's what reality TV is missing nowadays
(38:29):
watching the show, because I think we're all scared to
show our true colors because of people that judge us outside.
And that's what I see. But I get it. The
world is harsh, now, I get it. Man, you got
to protect your love on your family and your friends.
But yeah, shout out to the Challenge family, man. And
I can't name everybody and because I know even throughout
(38:52):
that clip that cameo I did for the challenge for
you you know, that was amazing, and I know Corey
was able to talk to me and how everyone was
very supportive and you know, wish nothing but the best
and wanted to see me back to win and you know,
just to compete again and be there, you know, so
shout out to them.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Well, I think I think it would just be interesting
to see what happens, like like obviously obviously, like Nelson
was like was and is still such a great character
and then he went through all all of this, and
I mean, I just think it would be interesting to
see somebody in in in you know, in the world,
(39:36):
and we have Nelson to do it with the prosthetic.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
We've never seen this on the show where a character
who was already established, you know. Then obviously because the
girl on Survivor who did very well by the way,
they eventually had to vote her out because they knew
if they let her get to the end, she was
gonna win. I think she made it to at least
the top ten. Yeah, she was great. She was a
challenge beast. I think she even won a challenge And
there were a couple of challenges she had to do.
(40:00):
She had her whole. I believe Knean below was a
prosthetic and there were a couple of challenges where she
had to remove it completely, whether she couldn't get it
wet or whatever. So she was doing it like literally
with one leg some of these challenges and things like that.
Won a couple of them, and finally Survivors a game
where a you're competing for a million dollars one person
could win, and you vote people out and eventually they're like, yeah,
(40:20):
we got to get her out of here because he
gets to the end. So that's why she got voted out.
But she was, again along the way, an inspiring story
to anybody, and I believe that even beforehand. I think
she is like a paralympian or at least a competitor
in some sort of athletics, whether it's track and whatnot.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
So it's like, you know, we've never seen it where.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Someone who started on the show, you know, got amputated
and then came back and participated on a show. And
to be honest with you, I don't even know if
we've necessarily seen it on a high level in sports
as well. So, I mean, it's it's a story that
is there for whoever is eventually going to take it
and be willing to bring you onto that screen. It's
I mean, it's it's going to be a because even
(41:01):
if it's not the Challenge per Se Challenge, fans will
be able to follow you, having watched you for ten
seasons now onto whatever it is. And it could also
be again, I'm sure, and you can tell us obviously
you're too. You know, you're a little less than two
years into this now. I'm sure you've done your research
and you're already kind of dabbling in some of these
other you know, competitive fields and stuff like. There's there's
(41:21):
not just reality shows, right, there's other forms of competition.
I'm sure there's other things that you've probably already started doing.
Tell us a little bit about that, like what is
out there for someone that's that's in your shoes no
pun intended now? And and what sort of steps have
you already started taking again no pun intended to go
down those routes competitively, whether it's Paralympics or or what
have you.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
Right, right, you know, their training never stopped. I love
the fitness world. I've always loved it. So you know,
if I do get the chance to do the challenge again,
it would be a beautiful thing to be able to
rep as if the lost community and shout her name
is noble. She she's a Paralympics champion. She's a beast.
She's a beast about her. Yeah, yes, I don't know
(42:11):
too much about it right. Her name is Noel. Her
name is Noel. We spoke to DM. She's reached out
to me and she's a beast. Does a long jump
and uh, I actually went out there till the vista
to the track facility to train out there, which was amazing.
Shout out to the coaches out there and nothing. She
(42:32):
just told me about Reality TV and her time Survivor,
and she says she had a great time. She had
an amazing time. She loved it. And when it comes
to me, you know, I asked myself, you know, can
I do all the things that I could have done
without losing my leg? And my training hasn't stopped, you know,
if anything is gotten ten times better and a lot
(42:56):
of questions, I said, okay, when it comes to swimming,
when it comes to jumping, can you jump with that leg? On?
Do you have to take it off when you're when
you're coming out of water, or you gonna have to
switch legs. And I've tested myself to where it's like, Okay,
the things I'm gonna have to do, I'm gonna have
to adapt or my times will be slower. Let's take
for example, me swimming and having to run out the water.
(43:19):
Am I gonna switch legs? No, I'm gonna keep my
leg on. I'm gonna swim with my leg. Of course,
it's gonna be a lot heavier, so I'm gonna have
to rely on my upper body. That's when we have
to adapt. I have to strengthen my upper body to
make sure my legs are strong enough to so I
can do that two mile swim, so I can get
out there and rock climb. You know, now, with every
(43:39):
step I take when it comes to rock climbing or
a jumping truck from truck, do I jump from my
left leg my right leg? I've had to learn to
adapt to make my left leg a lot stronger to
be able to when I fall or jump or take
that impact. And yes, I can do all the same things. Now.
Let's take for example, climbing up a wall those little
edges how to do out the water or climbing up
(44:02):
the ladder. Now I'm gonna have to precide my step
to make sure that every step I take I don't overstep.
It's just going to take decision making and being calm,
corn collective. We all know this. Jordan was able to
do it, Bill was able to do it, and I'm
able to do it. So only way to see this
is this test this out. I've done the challenge before.
(44:25):
I know what it brings, so why would they not?
Why would they not? He know what know what it takes.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
I dude, listen, I am all about. First of all,
what they want is the story, the character and the
notoriety and you know, and and the capability and is
this like it can they kill you?
Speaker 4 (44:51):
Like?
Speaker 3 (44:51):
I mean like that that's what people are like, That's
what the challenge is looking for. Like we take tests
to see like if your heart can take it right,
like with the eye with Theo's eye, Like I think
that they were worried that like maybe the stitches didn't
heal up in his eye and that he can lose
more vision if he like gets hit in the head
with something. I think that that's like the fear now
(45:14):
with the leg, like I don't know what, I don't
know how much you know, worse it can get because
like obviously you're watching a guy like ct right, Like
you're watching all like obviously you're watching the show. You
just described a few competitions that we had just recently done,
and you're scoping it out. You're doing your uh, you know,
you're doing your uh, your scouting report on just in
(45:37):
case if I had to do the child? Can I
do this? Right? You mentioned the ladder, you mentioned the
climbing after getting out of water, and you go, how
would I do this?
Speaker 1 (45:47):
Look?
Speaker 3 (45:47):
I could, you know, like even if you lost your leg,
like if it fell off, I still think that you
can climb the wall with upper body strength, right, And
like that's that's the That's what happens in the challenge
is like some people are better equipped that climbing, some
people are better equipped that running. Some people fucking do
really shitty on that hill. That first hell that we
(46:09):
were talking about, can't make it up the hill at all.
I don't think you're gonna have a problem with that.
And then the puzzles.
Speaker 4 (46:17):
That's so funny, you know what I'm saying it might
stop you right there. Yeah, that's all laugh about it too.
Uh he said, what about have you lost your leg
going up this ladder or something like that. Oh, well,
what's cool about this? No, No, you're good. You don't know.
And this is a good thing. Bro. Nobody knows out there.
That's the beauty of it. Is he gonna lose his
leg up this fucking ladder? Is it gonna come off
(46:39):
if he gets in the physical altercation on the one
on one who knows a hall ball whatever the case
may be. Well, they have different prosthetics to where it's like,
my prosthetic is connected to where you have to press
a button, it can't come off. I was this fall
off of thirty foot water or if I was the
wrestle or tussel. They got it to where they put
there's football players out there. They foam it up to
(47:01):
where it feels like foam like, so if somebody hit
theirselves or I'm wrestling with somebody, it's not gonna hurt anyone.
And that's the big thing about it, is it gonna
hurt someone else to where it's like, Yeah, they foam
it up to where it feels like foam feels like pillow.
The only difference is is that Nelson, it's gonna be
a little heavier for you, and that's when I have
to be stronger. I have to make my legs stronger
(47:22):
to where it's like, okay, I have to be able
to climb up this mountain. That's the only difference. And no,
it's not going to fall off if I fall onto
the water or somebody tries to pull it off, because
it's connected to me without pressing a button. So yeah,
it's cool, man, you don't know. I didn't know because what.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
I'm thinking is, like, to be honest, I think it
would be kind of a cool scene, like if you're like, like,
I'll joke aside, like, I think it would be a
cool fucking seat. Your fucking leg falls off, you pick
it up, you gotta swim with it, and you stick
it back on like you're fucking superhero, right like your
a cyborg climb up the fucking thing.
Speaker 1 (47:55):
Whatever.
Speaker 3 (47:56):
I still think it would be an interesting thing to
like see because we've never like really.
Speaker 4 (48:02):
Seen it before. Yeah, yeah, you know that might have
been if I had to get there faster. Okay, we
all know the swimming part nobody was there.
Speaker 2 (48:13):
Bro, if all of a sudden you come in and
you're good, If all of a sudden you come in
and you're good at swimming, all.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
Right, I'm gonna be like, Okay, this is right.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
He wasn't good at swimming before.
Speaker 1 (48:23):
This went from a disadvantage. This went from a disadvantage
to an advantage. Let's be yeah, well.
Speaker 3 (48:29):
Well, but the thing is is like I could totally see,
like this is what I would do, like if I didn't, like,
if I was in your situation, I would be prepared
to like, you know, clip it on or like I
don't even know if this is fucking possible, you know
what I'm saying. But I would be like, like I'm
obviously need this thing. So I'm like, I care like
a knee brace, right, like some I had to wear
(48:51):
a knee brace at during a lot of the competitions.
Right then in the last one, right I had ship balanced,
I'm like, I didn't even think about the fucking brace.
So I just was like, all right, I'm doing it,
you know, but like obviously you can't. You can't do that, right,
Like I could have totally fucked my ship up, you know,
had I slipped off of this log like I could
(49:12):
have twisted my ship up again.
Speaker 4 (49:14):
You know, well, I I love you, d but I
was pretty mind blowing when you lost that one. I
was like, there's no way your balance walking on there,
you had the most confident. I was like this, this
dude's about to make this comeback right here. Bial had
no balance. He was taking like a baby beer. I
was like, there's no way. Oh yeah, I didn't get it.
(49:35):
I didn't understand that. I was had to be his
leg as legs hurting because you're you walking on there
with the confidence you did. It was like, oh, dude,
he's s Gucci mane. This is a comical game. He
got it. When it made you stand up, I was like,
oh ship, he's getting it. I'm not even I was
like I was mind blowing when you lost that, bro.
(49:55):
I was like, no way.
Speaker 3 (49:57):
It was like it was like being in like a
like you know when you're in a dream. Like The
sitting down part on it though, was the weirdest part,
the standing up part, like I just I lost my balance.
I made one move and I just like moved and
I started losing my balance and then he popped me
and I fell. That's why I went flying because I
(50:18):
was already off balance.
Speaker 4 (50:20):
So when I was standing there because of your leg
was that because of the injury already, because you didn't
know how to adapt to the your balance was it
off because of that?
Speaker 3 (50:28):
So I think the sitting down part, I think I
had no adductor strength. So you know, when you like
squeeze something with like the inside of your thighs, I
think because of like the inside of the inside of
your thighs, not not your adductors, your not your ad
but your adductors, the inside of your legs. So like
if you were squeezing something with the inside of your legs,
(50:50):
I think I had already had like like weak My
leg was already weak, right, like something that you would
be coming into right like you you're you're you're trying
to rehab your leg back together, but and you're like
you're thinking about, oh, can I run up them ount
and can I get down the mountain? Can I carry
this over here? Can I carry that over there?
Speaker 4 (51:07):
You know?
Speaker 3 (51:08):
Can I run? Can I job whatever? Can I can
I can I cut? Like I had already, Like you're
rehabbing your leg and you're not thinking about these like
little muscles, right. So that's why I think the sitting
down part was weak. I think the insides of my
legs were really weak and I couldn't squeeze. But then
the standing up part I was I think I was
(51:29):
already freezing cold. I already hit the water five times.
And I don't know, dude, It's just like anything else.
You don't work on balance like in a while, like, yeah,
I was good at balancing on anything for my entire life.
But now you go through a couple of injuries, you're
getting older, you don't work on that anymore because you
think you're you still have it. No, dude, you gotta
(51:51):
polish up them fucking balancing skill.
Speaker 4 (51:54):
You don't think about that shite. And then I think,
when it comes to the decision, and that's what the
beauty of seeing me on the challenge is going to be.
Because I've had to work on those things, I know
what and I think you should know this too. We
know what the challenge is. It's not about who can
bend you, who can squat the most. It's not about
(52:14):
people see me lifting it. Oh he looks good, he's shredded,
he got muscles. But am I able to balance on
that one leg if I have to, If I had
to depend on this one leg, am I going to
be able to tussle and rustle? Am I going to
be able to be shredded and cut it? So the
things I've been working on to shot to the this
is for the challenge community. I've been working on how
on my weakness. I've been working on how to count
(52:37):
on my prosthetic and use it as my strength just
in case I have to balance on this leg. I'm
not worried about my left leg. I'm not worried about
if I could run a five K three K. I
know I could run. We all know that. We all
know my speed hasn't left as we can see. But
the biggest thing is that, Okay Nelson, those Carnivo games,
how am I going to be able to run up
(52:57):
a rolling thing? Am I going to feel the every step? I?
And that's the things I've had to be able to
learn and that I've been training for. I've been working out.
I don't rely on my strength or my arms or
my rock climbing my upper body. I know that when
it comes to swimming, because that's all I'm joying. And
if I don't have a stronger upper body. I'm not
getting out that water I know I need and I
(53:28):
know when it comes to one on one elimination, people
are going to go for a weakness. I don't get
I don't give if I don't give a shit as
me and Coarier in there, at the end of the day,
I expect everyone to treat me as an equal if
you come, if you treat me as an able body
or a prosthetic or go light your fault because I'm
coming to win. I don't give a shit. I'm coming
(53:49):
for the weakness, So you better come from mind. And
that's the thing I'm having to do. And that's what
the challenge is all about, having to learn how to adapt.
What is the challenge? Right, So that's one of the
thinks I've been trained at home.
Speaker 2 (54:04):
I'd be shocked to hear that this never happens, because, like, look,
the story obviously makes perfect sense, like Derek said, ten
season veteran comes back and you could be such an
inspirational story. And it's the same company that made Survivor
that obviously has already had noel on the show. So
the question of oh, can you be cleared is an
(54:25):
insurance thing, Like clearly they allowed her not only to compete,
but live on an island and starve and all that
other stuff that the Challenge doesn't even do unless you
get to go at least you get to sleep in
a bunk bed. So I wonder, obviously the challenge has
stuff that's a little bit more extreme, a little bit
more physical, but you know, I would say that, like,
you know, so do the Paralympics. You know, there are
(54:45):
other things that obviously you know. The other question goes,
does the prosthetica in some regards become an advantage or
does that kind of even out based on the disadvantage
in this challenge. Yeah, it's an advantage here, And let
me be honest, I would say a Challenge viewer of
forty one seasons that never has stopped them before with
a million other things, whether it comes with size or
(55:06):
height or whatever. The challenge like all is fair in
love war and the Challenge changing the rules left and right.
So I don't think that's the hold up either. I
wonder if there just needs to be enough separation from
the initial accident and things like that, because I do
think at some point they might even sit back too
long and let another show come and steal their thunder.
I'm not gonna lie. I know you don't want to
say who's been calling you, but you know some other
(55:29):
show that maybe doesn't care as much about that other
stuff is gonna come and put you on before they do.
And you know, hopefully that doesn't happen, because I do
think the Challenge should ideally be the first place for
you to come and and you know, fit finish or
continue to telling your story.
Speaker 1 (55:45):
But you know, we'll see what happens.
Speaker 4 (55:47):
But you know we will. We will, no doubt, we
will see what happens. Shout out to a new threats
out there. I think you know they seen this season
in the talent they brought him. Athletically it was it's
been crazy entertainment. I don't know, but athletically it was
(56:08):
like WHOA. But I shout out to New Vets, I
see what they're bringing in. Shout out to the ogs
Man and big up to CT with his comeback. Man, Hey,
I'm closing door on him. That boy's coming. I'm talking
to him and he's running and jumping in and he's
getting after it.
Speaker 3 (56:27):
So yeah, man, yeah, I And again like I just
think that like our audience is interested in the comeback story,
you know, like you were down, can you get back up?
You know, like the CT you know, Justice for Lacka,
you know, like it's it's like it's like literally it's
(56:47):
turning into you know, like it's turning into you know,
justice for CT. Like people are interested seeing if this
guy is going to be able to climb a rope someday,
just like are you know, I think it's equally an
interesting just as interesting to see Nelson come back with
his leg you know, yeah, what are your what are
(57:11):
your thoughts on, you know, on these new kids? New
are the people you like? You don't like? You know,
I will tell you this next episode is absolutely fucking bonkers.
By the way, if you if you are paying attention
to it, if you guys are like, oh, where's the drama,
Like just wait, it's fucking next episode.
Speaker 4 (57:29):
It's coming, It's coming. That's what's up. No, no, you know,
I'm not too familiar with the names, but you know,
you know, I love the challenge. I love the elimination.
It's not too much for the drama. So I've been
able to fast forward to the challenges and I feel
like these new uh you know, they are in their
twenty they're young, they're young. I thought the the whole
(57:51):
scenario was a little bit because when I came in,
you know, let's go back to Challenge twenty nine, when
the rookies were going against the Rooks and the Vets
were going against the Vets. I think they should have
brought that back into that. I think the rookies should
have went against each other. I think the vet should
have went against each other. And when it came down
to it, then out of those rookies that went against
(58:13):
each other, they have the flag to be Okay, you
could come with us. Now you learned your way, you know,
to put these twenty years old against like let's say
I talked to Johnny about this when we were at
Kyle's wedding. Gabe against Johnny. Johnny's very athletic, he's in
good shape. Take his age for example, He's been the seasons.
He's one of the greats. But you put him against
(58:34):
this twenty year old kid. That guy's testocial, not his ass.
What do you think is going to happen? You know,
he still put up an amazing fight. And what Johnny's
had to find that little mistake that Gabe made. But
Gabe played such a great athletic endurance strength game. That
was his game. There was no way, There's no way.
But you know that being said, we don't control what TJ.
(59:00):
It's TJ's arena respected. We played the game as it is.
It was me like I said, the rookies should have
went against the rookies, the Vets should win against the
vet and they should have fought it out in the final.
That's my thoughts. That's what we did on season twenty
nine and then twenty eight was it.
Speaker 3 (59:17):
Not season twenty eight? Am I wrong?
Speaker 1 (59:20):
Invasion twenty nine? Invasion was twenty nine.
Speaker 4 (59:23):
Invasion was twenty nine. Yeah, Evasion was twenty nine. Invasion
the channel here.
Speaker 1 (59:27):
He was on. He was on twenty eight, right, you.
Speaker 4 (59:29):
Were on Rivals, right, me, I was on that was
my first season.
Speaker 2 (59:34):
Yeah, But twenty nine is when he went made the
final and when they separated the you know, the Vets
and yep. But let me now, let me ask you.
So you mentioned the cameo on season forty. I believe
you also had a cameo at the beginning of season
thirty nine. You like happened to be with Maurice when
she got her call, things like that. But I do
remember following you, like, you know, whether it was maybe
(59:55):
a year or two ago, and it seemed like you
were pretty like down on your relationship ship with the
Challenge as far as maybe the Challenge gods or the
show itself, and I was wondering, it seems like you've
changed your tune on that. So I was just wondering, like,
is there to be to catch people up who maybe
are like, oh, okay, maybe I maybe did I dream
that or whatever? What was it about that time where
(01:00:15):
you felt that maybe they had turned their back on
you or I don't want to speak for you. Is
that what you felt like? And what has changed since?
Was it just that the cameo on forty Has there
been more of a reach out? Is there more of
a light at the end of the tunnel as far
as getting back on the show? What can you talk
about to clear the air there? Because I think a
lot of us were following your every post about the
Challenge at the time, and that one really stood.
Speaker 4 (01:00:35):
Out right right right. You know, I was going through
a lot back then, you know, I was looking for
someone to blame or grows who it was and at
the end of the day, you know, you can't blame
anybody but yourself. You know, MTV gave me a great
opportunity and gave me a platform to reach millions of people,
(01:00:59):
you know, and that's what I'm grateful for. At the time,
whatever decision or whatever remark I made, you know, if
it was negative or positive, I hope nobody was offended
by them because I was going through a dark time.
But now you know, i'd show that and I hope
the people that are watching this, you know, I'm thankful
(01:01:21):
because if it wasn't for the platform I had today,
who knows. You know, there's many people that don't have
the platform that I've had and have the opportunities I've had,
and that's what you got to be thankful for, you know,
and you move forward. We move forward, you know, depending
on the MTV calls me, if whatever network decides to
call me, you know, whatever I decided to do, moving forward,
(01:01:44):
you know, I'm happy. And that's at the end of
the day. I can't make everyone happy. I can't and
then you know that, you know, and that's it. Man,
There's no negativity, there's no bad blood shout out to TJ.
If people don't know TJ and I talked, you know,
(01:02:06):
he was there for me when I was in the hospital.
You know, he DMS me, he checks up on me,
and he's like he loves the things I do. And
that's my guy, you know. And a lot of challenge people,
a lot of producers and you know that were there
were TV you love me, you know, and shout out
to them, and man, I get it. I get it.
(01:02:28):
You know, I get it when people say they retire
and they come back because you know, once you get
a taste of the challenge and having this opportunity not
just to go around the world and compete, but to
push yourself to a different limit you never thought you
could do, it's it's it's amazing, and uh it's it's
(01:02:50):
it's it's rough. Don't get me wrong. We all know
it's rough to be here, especially when you have family
back at home and loved ones and you get to
a certain age, so it's like, damn, but we it.
We love what we do. And like I said, if
I have the opportunity and TJ calls my phone, that's
the belief I'm gonna take it. And if it's not
(01:03:10):
that opportunity and it's you know, whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
There's a lot of them now the last few years.
Ten reality shows that pop up every year. Uh there's
House and Villains, there's traders, there's I mean, who knows
you name it. There's a million different things that could
be on your phone and probably are, but go ahead.
Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
Deep.
Speaker 4 (01:03:29):
I talked to Devin and Devin's like, bro, you know
what we're gonna take it back to are you the
one you're gonna do? W BET's looking for love? Banana's
looking for love me and Johnny was like, you know what, Johnny,
you ain't got a what about the ogs are still single?
You know, like you know, uh no, man, but what
are you gonna say?
Speaker 3 (01:03:48):
D I was just like, you know, since we're kind of,
you know, working on memory lane here with the challenge,
what are your fondest moments you know from the challenge?
Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
What?
Speaker 3 (01:03:58):
What?
Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
What?
Speaker 3 (01:03:59):
What comes to mind? When you're like, you know what,
that was really fucking awesome. You know, I would love
to do that again, you know, whatever, the people, whatever
comes to mind, you know, just take it, give us
a little job down down memory lane. You began doing
(01:04:22):
the challenge in twenty sixteen with h on Rivals three
with Amanda as your partner, and then you finished off
with Ryder Dies in twenty twenty three with Nouris as
your partner. You've done the Invasion of Champions, Dirty thirty,
Vendetta's Final Reckoning, Total Madness, double Agents, Spies, lies and allies.
(01:04:44):
Where does your mind take you with? You know this?
Over this ten years of challenge fucking awesomeness.
Speaker 4 (01:04:55):
You know. I can sit here and tell y'all, man,
I love every challenge, you know, every time I get there,
this is the best of the best. Oh my god,
But let's be real. I still shaking my ass when
I'm fucking all up in the air and blows that words.
Unless it's something you really love is on the ground
you're running and tusseling. When I'm up in that air,
(01:05:16):
had to swim those long bottles, I'm like, God, Then
when I get myself into why am I doing this?
But then you realize, you know, the best part about
the challenge will speak for myself, is like showing up
at the airport, not knowing where you're going, seeing of
(01:05:38):
people you either have seen before and having a history
that you have with them, or seeing these new rookies
knowing like damn, you don't know what you're in for.
And that's where we were saying, like I said, some
of the favorite moments of mine, and you realize that
when you're off the show is just showing up. That
showing up at the airport and having that history you
(01:06:01):
either have with the ogs or looking at these new
rookies like damn, okay, either she's hot or looking at
the dude it's like, ah, fuck, this is big as ship.
How we're gonna get him out first? Like, oh, they
don't know what they end for, you know, so and
just you know, having that downtime people don't see and
you people start opening up to you about you know,
(01:06:23):
who they really are, and you know you see people
breaking or you see people thriving, or you're like, oh,
this dude's a stigma. He's gonna leave a mark in
the game, or you don't belong here. So I think
going through those moments and building and having that history,
people's it's the journey. It's like I missed that. I
love the challenge and I love every challenge and I
(01:06:45):
love that we love to win, but I miss going
through that I miss like, can I survive this? Can
I really make it to the end, because a lot
of people break and you don't see that. They don't
capture those moments, you know, and where people are missing kids,
or people are missing loved ones, or they're heard or
you know, you know, like I missed that, you know,
I'm missed not having my phone or like not knowing
(01:07:07):
you know what tomorrow brings, you know, being that kid again,
and it's like you get this break from the fucking
world with everything going on, you cut off from everybody
and you have time to like be you and just
had that moment would.
Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
You be okay with?
Speaker 2 (01:07:23):
And I don't think they would do this, Honestly, I
personally think if they I think if they make the decision,
we're gonna we're gonna bring back NUBBT. It'll be for
the flagship season forty two, forty three, forty four. But
let's say they go, hey, we want to test out
the logistics of how uh you know this all works
on All Stars?
Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:07:42):
We have five seasons of All Stars under our belt.
The last season had Amber Fessie, Devin Leroy, you name it.
It's not just where they put old guys off the
pastor like Mark Long anymore. It's it's sort of another
spinoff where they, you know, again, test people back. Ashley
Mitchell did her first season back on All Stars. Jordan
and Aya came back on All Stars. Would you be
okay with that? If they said, hey, now you want
(01:08:03):
to try you out?
Speaker 4 (01:08:07):
That's so funny, mentioned Ashley. Hey, well, mentally test you back.
If you're okay with All Stars to bring you back
to the new ship, you know, I would be okay
with that. I would be okay with that. I think
any opportunity that comes to my door, you know, it's,
of course I gonna give it thought. You know what's
best for me at the end of the day and
(01:08:28):
where I'm at in life. But you know, do I
think I'm better than everybody else? Fuck? Yeah, I'm not
gonna see it. A lot of y'all.
Speaker 5 (01:08:38):
I know I can out run them. I know, like
I'm physically running, I can do. I'm still stronger, faster.
I'm not gonna see it. I'm not gonna say I'm
not cocky, but I do have confidence in myself. I
have confidence in my abilities and I've and I've trained
for this. You know, It's not like I'm going in
there and not knowing what I'm not knowing. I know
(01:08:58):
what the table brings. I'm what the car is gonna unfold.
It's not going to be every challenge. I'm not know
what to do, but I'm gonna know how to adapt.
And that's at the end of the day. That's what
it's all about. So about I think shout out to
the Ogs and All Stars. Everyone thinks that's the flagship
show and everyone wants things. It's like, but I've seen
the talent they brought on there, and they're still killers.
Speaker 4 (01:09:21):
You know. You know what I'm saying. I'm not going
to be good at everything. You know, puzzles, you know,
I'm not gonna be the best swimming of the fastest climber.
But those little I hate check marks. I hate. I
still hate them. I rather keep going I get check marks.
To me is give us opportunities, like I get it,
like puzzles and here and there. But I remember one
of the last finals we did. I was very upset
(01:09:43):
because a lot of people had a lot of time
to rest. You know, we were in a car. I
remember CT was taking a nap in that final. That's Uh,
my last final I did with uh who won that?
It was?
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
Was it?
Speaker 4 (01:09:57):
Casey and CT won it? And I remember those moments.
I missed the moments. I don't want to stop. I
don't want to break. You know, those finals are meant
to break people. No, it was really broken. But yeah, man,
bringing on.
Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
I remember when you were going through it, when you
were still you had not made the decision to amputate yet.
And Mark Long and I we're driving. It must have
been a couple months before, because I want to say
it was January, probably January, the year that you eventually
did it in March. It must have been a couple
months before you eventually made the decision and did it.
And Mark Long and I don't know if you remember this.
He was telling me that he spoke to you and
(01:10:32):
he was kind of echoing his sentiments to me where
he was going.
Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
And no offense to you, Derek, or to even Mark Long.
He goes, he goes.
Speaker 2 (01:10:39):
Nelson has the opportunity to go from being one of
one hundred two hundred of us who are good on
the challenge and who are remembered for this, and a
lot of people love us for this, and that's all
fine and good, But man, if he gets his foot
amputated and he goes and dives into that, he has
the opportunity to be maybe the most famous para athlete
ever or certainly the most unique reality star competitor slash
(01:11:03):
pair of athlete ever. And that's something that obviously you
would never wish on anyone particularly, But turning a negative
into a positive, it's like that he was telling me.
He goes the second heam starts focusing on that he
has the dedication, the athletics, the genetics, all of this
to essentially maybe be the best ever in that lane.
Speaker 1 (01:11:22):
And I want to know, do you remember having those
conversations with him?
Speaker 3 (01:11:25):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
You know, because and did that inspire you at all?
Speaker 2 (01:11:28):
And now having obviously been in this now for a
year and a half, and we've seen like I saw
that commercial that I don't know if it was a
real commercial or it was just somebody putting together some
for a real but you know it was you. I
believe you know it just all of everything you've done
since the minute you made that decision, was Mark long
right at all? And did he did he inspire you
(01:11:49):
at all? During that time of uncertainty that obviously could
have been you know, like nothing Derek or I as ever,
you know, a decision we've never had to make, obviously.
Speaker 4 (01:11:57):
Right right. Shout out to Mark Long. I think Mark
Long inspires a lot of people. You know, his physique
and who he is and the career he's had. You know,
he's showing people that, you know, no matter what age are,
you know, the youth in him and the personality, the
energy he brings, he brings it off, so on. Shout
out to him and and forgiving them, giving me those
(01:12:18):
inspirational words and believing in me. You know, I took
everything into accountability. I'm not going to sit here and
say I didn't think about the things, because I'll be lying.
You know, Could I do the challenge again? Can I
be this inspiration? Why am I doing this? Am I
doing this for the accolades? Am I doing this because
people think I can't do it? They have their doubts
(01:12:40):
like am I doing it for because I heard the
rite motivational song or I saw something on TV? Or
am I doing it for financial reasons? Like? Why am
I doing this? And I come to find out, you know,
I've learned that you have to it wasn't just for me,
(01:13:02):
you know, the time I've had a part from the Challenge.
And you know, even when I was there, I never
knew where my career was or what my purpose was.
I knew I loved what I was doing, traveling the world,
competing and being able to make money to support my
family as much as I can, you know, and being
(01:13:24):
able to have this purpose now helping others with either
with live loss or going through some traumatic experience. I
realized that that's what brought me a lot of happiness.
And when I walked into the gym atf and people
knew my name, you know who knew what it could bring.
You know, even nowadays, people are either looking at me
(01:13:46):
at the airport or wherever I'm at. It's like that's
the guy from the Challenge or that look at that
guy he has one leg and me being able to
accept those those things, it's a lot. It's a lot
because you question it. Does he have a confidence he's
had with two legs? Is he going to own it?
(01:14:07):
You know, you're the drinking and driving guy. Oh you're
the Challenge guy. When are you coming back? What is
your next move? You get all these questions and I've
realized at the end of the day, you know, I
have to ask myself what makes me happy and why
am I still here? So and to answer your question,
(01:14:29):
I'm here to help and inspire others and show people that,
you know, regardless of the decisions you make, it doesn't
have to be the outcome or dictate your future. You know,
even if people doubted you or people want you to
do this, it's totally up to you. It's already written
out or whatever I'm going to do if that's when
(01:14:49):
the challenge be a representative of limb lost people or
whatever I do, you know. So, but I'm going to
do it to my fullibility, and I'm going.
Speaker 6 (01:14:59):
To give it everything, right, yeah, and you know, to
be fair, Like I mean, this could have went in
a completely different path too, right, like the people people
people go through this and like I mean, they can't
(01:15:20):
get back up, you know, and so like you know what,
God bless whatever anyone's situation is.
Speaker 3 (01:15:27):
Man, I'm glad you're in good spirits and like I'm
glad you're back on top. Or we really don't know
exactly what in anybody's head, you know, even yours when
you go to sleep and think about it, like I
can't imagine, but the fact that, like you have a
smile on your face. I see this picture of you
on on Instagram with the with the the goofy nelly
(01:15:47):
T that we all love to see and just got
done with the five K, and I just think that that, uh,
you know, I'm I think everyone's interested, interested to see
what's next. And you mentioned something about the Paralympics.
Speaker 4 (01:16:10):
That hold on, Derek, who you calling goofy because I
know you ain't talking with all those goofy Yeah, sure
you'd be wearing just talking about.
Speaker 3 (01:16:27):
Yes, hey, listen, listen, I was I was wondering. I
was wondering, you know, you were going from Scuba nelly
T to Nubby nelly T. And I was wondering what
the next nickname was. But I feel like goofy nelly
T has a nice ring to it. But you tell me, what,
(01:16:50):
what's what's what's next? What's what's next for you? Like
you mentioned the Paralympics, and what nickname are you going
by these days?
Speaker 4 (01:17:00):
You know, I think every nickname has been a chapter
of my life. You know. It started from nelly T,
from rul one to you know, Scuba Nelly to showing people,
you know, swimming and the adversity, and now it's nugg t.
This is just a whole another chapter in my life.
And I think this is where I'm at right now.
(01:17:21):
You know, I can't tell you what's next, but what
I've been doing, I've you know, had the options of
the opportunities to you know, the Paralympics, the you know,
the long jump, the two hundred Paralympics are in twenty
twenty eight, back at home in la in California, where
I grew up where you know, things went bad for
(01:17:42):
me out there and I ended up in Texas. Now
I get to go home and compete among millions and
peoples and inspire. And it's not about winning the gold.
It's about if he could do it, and it does
he have the will And I think a lot of
people nowadays are forgetting that we have that willingness withinside
of us. It's there, it's very deep down inside of us.
(01:18:03):
But my fire is it's I could feel the flame
just ready to explode. And I don't know if that
lane is the Paralympics. I don't know if that's a
challenge or a different reality TV show, But I'm getting
ready and I'm gonna stay ready. And I think my
boy Brad said it the best at one show. You
(01:18:24):
stay ready. You don't have to get ready, regardless of
what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:18:29):
Well, Hey, I don't know if you're around on December thirteenth,
but we happen to be in the Dallas area Plano
to be exact. Someone you've mentioned a few times is
going to be with us. CT Tamborello is going to
be there, Carl Mario, who I know you know pretty well,
Derek myself, a couple of those new threats. You get
to size them up. But if you happen to be
around that weekend, Nelly would love to see you. We've
(01:18:49):
got a sold out show at the House of Comedy.
No it's not the Mic Drop Comedy in Plano, gorgeous
club there, but we're around all weekend too. If you
just want to get up or something, we'd love to
see you.
Speaker 4 (01:18:59):
Man out, no doubt, no no doubt. We'll definitely talk
about it. Thank you for having me, I mean, shout
out to those guys. Love to be a part of it,
and yeah, let's work it out. And yeah, that's that's
the city I'm at right now, So uh be a
blessing to see what's up and see all the fans
and answer the hard questions and answer the goofy asked
questions like Derek said.
Speaker 7 (01:19:20):
Yeah, uh you know, disrespect but uh you know, yeah, yeah,
well no really man, it is uh you know, when
I see you doing something you know like that, it
is it's just uh, you know, to see where you
came from.
Speaker 3 (01:19:39):
I mean, it's been a two years of like, you know,
whether you you know, I'm sure you know you you
you You mentioned a lot of cast members here, but
like the people that know you and saw you go
through it, it's like or you know, it's it's like,
you know, when you think about it, it's like you
would almost go to that place with you and we're like,
how the fuck is she going to get through it?
(01:19:59):
So to I see you at the finish line here
with that goofy ass smile of yours at the five
K with Corey and shit, it's fucking it's great to
see man, and thank you for popping in today and
giving us your time. And you know, I can't wait
to see you somewhere, whether it's on the challenge field
or in Texas for a coffee or anything. It's nice
(01:20:22):
to see your smiling face again. Man, definitely had no doubt.
Speaker 4 (01:20:25):
Man. Like I said, it's great to have opportunities and
platforms like y'all the Challenge to be here since nineteen
eighty nine, and for y'all to you know, give the feedback,
the stories behind the stories. It's lovely and for people
to see my growth, and I think that's what reality
TV is all about. It's about growth. And to see
(01:20:48):
me on the Challenge or whatever platform I am taking
off my leg and seeing my limb like wow, this guys,
nobody's ever seen nothing like that. And I think me
able to own that and to be represent that and
then say it with a smile, not embarrassment. It's gonna
be the wonderful, beautifulest thing ever to come to TV.
That's my take on lim loss and being able to
(01:21:10):
represent that community. I love y'all. Man. Yeah, on Dallas.
Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
It's on your score if you're if you're on Instagram,
it's underscore Nelson Thomas. If you're on TikTok, it's MTV underscore.
Speaker 1 (01:21:22):
Nelson. YouTube is underscore Nelson Thomas. Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:21:25):
Look, here's what I'll say. I speak for Mark Long
as well when he said that. To me, It's like
when I scroll through the top of Instagram now and
I see you wakeboarding out there, I see you jumping
through the streets there, and you you look like someone
who has been doing this kind of thing for your
whole life, and you literally got there in what is it,
a year year and a half from I'd imagine the
(01:21:46):
day you made that decision was a tough day. And
I don't know if you saw this, but a lot
of us believed in you that you'd be I mean,
it's incredible, and the fact that you had obviously already
built the following for being a reality star you were,
I mean, I mean talk about, uh, the perfect person
to have three one hundred and seventy five thousand followers
already or close to it, because I mean you you
don't need to be on TV to be inspiring people
(01:22:07):
with your platform and with your positivity here doing stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:22:10):
That I couldn't do with five nights.
Speaker 2 (01:22:12):
So I didn't Mark a Long and I wake up
every day wishing we had new new legs.
Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
Congratulation I had to everyone, if they would have took
both my legs, I would.
Speaker 1 (01:22:22):
Have been sixty three. I would have Sick four like
the but now still say close your mouth, close mouth.
Speaker 3 (01:22:32):
Oh yeah, no, I'm still gonna I'm still gonna lose
that battle all day. You got that ship.
Speaker 5 (01:22:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:22:38):
We appreciate your brothers.
Speaker 4 (01:22:39):
Thank you man, you to brother.
