(00:25):
Bright Eyes Pig, Buddy Pig Wantsa Tail. Buddy Pig came into the
pen where his mamma was baking teabiscuits for supper and sat down in a
chair by the table where she wasworking. He didn't say anything, but
just watched his mamma rolling out thecross or whatever it is they make tea
(00:49):
biscuits of. And pretty soon MissusPig noticed that Buddy didn't seem very happy.
His face was all twisted up afunny sort of scowl, and every
once in a while he would givea long sigh ah, as though he
hadn't a friend in all the world. Why Buddy, Missus Pigg asked,
(01:14):
when the tea biscuits were ready forthe oven. Whatever in the wide wide
world is the matter? Are yousick? No, mother, Buddy answered,
I'm not sick, but I wish, I wish, And then he
stopped and sort of wiggled his nosewell, asked his mother with a smile,
(01:38):
what do you wish? Remember though, that I am not a fairy
and can't give you anything you want. Oh, answered the little guinea boy
pig. This is very easy, mamma. All I want is a tail,
A tail, a tale, exclaimedhis mamma in great surprise, as
she wondered if after all, buthe wasn't ill, for that was a
(02:02):
very strange request, and she beganto wish that his papa was home,
or that Bright Eyes, who isBuddy's sister, was in the house to
help look after him. But BrightEyes had gone to see her aunt and
wouldn't be back to night. Yes, went on Buddy, I want a
tail. All the other boys andgirls who are friends of mine have them,
(02:23):
and I don't see why I can't. For you see, guinea pigs
never have tails. Why that is, I don't know, except maybe it's
better that way in hot weather. But anyhow, they have no tails.
You don't need a tail, saidBuddy's mamma. Yes I do, mother,
dear, he answered, Jackie andPetie bow Wow have tails, and
(02:46):
so have Billy and Johnnie bushytail andthe three Wobble Wobbles, and but but
Bully and Bolly. The frogs haveno tails, said Missus Pig, and
they are happy, Buddy. Well, they are in the water so much
it doesn't show whether they have atail or not. Went on, Buddy,
(03:07):
and Sammy and Susy littletail haven't muchof a tail, buddy, said
Missus Pig as she looked in theoven to see if the biscuits were burning.
I know it, mother, butthey have something of a tail,
spoke Buddy, and maybe it willgrow longer in time. I'd be glad
if I had even as much asSammy has well, said missus Pig.
(03:31):
I'm sorry, Buddy, but Idon't see how you are ever going to
get a tail. I haven't any, your father hasn't any, and we
get along very well. None ofyour relations have tails, and they are
happy they never had any. Infact, there has never been a tail
in our family. And I don'tsee why you want to start. Now.
(03:54):
Run out and play like a goodboy, and when bright Eyes comes
home, it'll be supper time andwe'll have hot biscuits and honey. But
though Buddy ran out, he wasnot happy. There was a frown on
his face, and as he walkedthrough the woods, he kept thinking how
nice it would be to have atail pretty soon? Oh, I guess
(04:18):
in about a whisper at a squeak, Buddy Pick heard a rustling in the
tree over his head. Then hesaw two big yellow eyes peering down at
him from the darkness of the woods, and a voice cried out, what's
the matter, little boy? Whyare you so sad? Oh? I
(04:42):
feel bad because I haven't a tail, answered Buddy, wondering who was speaking.
What's the mountain? Did someone cutyour tail off? The voice asked,
No, replied Buddy, I neverhad one, but I want one
awfully bad. Oh don't worry abouta little thing like that, went on
(05:04):
the voice. I can get afine tail for you. Oh can you,
cried Buddy, his face lighting up. Are you a fairy? Well
not exactly, was the answer. But you just run along after me and
I'll get a tail for you inless than no time. Then there was
(05:28):
a rustling in the branches, anda great big owl with ears that looked
like horns flew out, and Buddywas frightened, but the owl said,
oh, don't be alarmed, littleboy, just follow me, and I'll
see that you get a tail, sir. The owl flew along through the
(05:50):
dark, dismal woods, going slowlyand close to the ground so Buddy could
follow, and pretty soon the owlstopped in front of a hole in the
side of a hill. That iswhere the tail is, said the owl,
Just wait and I'll have it outto you in a juffy and a
(06:12):
half, and bless me if thatowl didn't go in that hole. He
stayed there some time, and Buddycould hear voices inside talking and lansects.
Goodness, me alive and a cherrypie. Out of that hole was thrust
a great beg bushy tail, atail and nothing else. Believe me,
(06:35):
if you please. Oh what afine tale, cried Buddy in delight.
Do you think, so, askeda voice. Then just grab hold of
it, hold tight, and it'syours. Well, but he didn't think
there was any danger, so hegrabbed whole of the tail and held on
(06:57):
tight. Oh you me. Insteadof pulling the tail out, he found
himself being pulled in, yes, sir, right into that hole. And
lad knows what would have happened ifBuddy's sister right eyes hadn't come along just
then, on our way home fromher aunt's house, she saw right away
(07:18):
that the bushy tail was fast tosomething inside the hole. That's a fox's
tail, she cried. And he'spulling you into his den. Let's go
quickly, let's go, buddy. So Buddy, let go just in time.
Though the fox and the owl rushedout and tried to grab him,
(07:40):
but they fell down and couldn't getup, and Dine and he and his
sister ran home. You see,it was just a trick, just a
trick of that owl and fox toget Buddy into the den and eat him
up. But they didn't, didthey. He was saved, I'm glad
to say. And the lesson afterthat Buddy never wanted a tale. And
(08:07):
that's the end of our story. But next time, not this time.
