Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Danny Clinkscale reasonably irreverent podcast, insightful and
witty commentary, probing interviews and detours from the beaten path.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Welcome to Danny Stan's football weekend. And it was a
weekend of have nots and haves and almost and never
wors and of course never occurs would be the case
for the Kansas City Chiefs, who are on the bye
week and now look ahead to the biggest game of
the year so far and maybe a defining game for
the Chiefs at least it will decide whether they're in

(00:37):
a pretty good position or desperate position. As far as
the NFL playoff race is concerned. The playoffs are no
longer even a dream for the Missouri Tigers. They were
handled with ease by Texas A and M in a
game that really had precious little to hang your hat
on except for the fact that you got to put
it away and move on. And Kansas is probably going

(00:58):
to be scratching their head a little bit more because
close games under atlant'ce lightehold are becoming a bad thing
and a trend that you don't want. K State was
on the buy also, they play at Oklahoma State they
need a couple of wins out of their last three
two games. They're heavily favored in one game they're not.
They need to make sure they take care of that

(01:19):
business to go to a bowl game. And Kansas also
will talk about their bowl situation which is kind of dire.
Texas Tech proves who's the bully of the Big twelve,
and we'll talk about the rest of the NFL day
and a couple of quarterbacks who I think maybe should
be singled out for a little more admiration. All that
wrapped into a nice little ball with Stan Weber today

(01:41):
on Danny and Stan's Football Weekend, always presented by Advanced

Welcome back. The back three games of the season are now.

(04:38):
Really the issue for the Missouri Tigers is Texas. A
and M slowly but surely pulled away and ended up
with a completely dominating win over the Tigers. Precious little
for the fans. On an increasingly chilly day. It wasn't
as bad as it was supposed to be. The wind
didn't come in until later, but that didn't help. Mattie's
allars was overwhelmed. All kinds of things looked bad. They

(04:59):
ran the ball a little bit, but they were gashed
in the second half for a slew of yards. On
their defense. The defense tried to hang in there for
a while. This one just was a day to forget
for Eli Drinkwitz and the boys.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
Yes, because they had a chance if they were able
to win that game to get into the college football
playoff talk, which is just elite air, you know, we
spent a lot of time talking about that. Danny and
a sports radio eight ten WHB at a roundtable, how
these coaches are.

Speaker 6 (05:27):
Unfairly being evaluated.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
Haiti, You make the college football playoff or not, almost
as if it's the NCAA Tournament in basketball where half
or more of.

Speaker 6 (05:36):
Your conference and a big conference makes it.

Speaker 5 (05:37):
So it's really unfair to put that pressure on Eli
Drinkoitz and make it seem like this season is a
failure in any way. But that dream was there when
they went to play Texas A and M. And even
though A and M is number three team in the
country and undefeated, it just didn't sound like Alabama coming
in undefeated or Ohio State. You say, we can compete
with these guys, And in certain ways Missouri did. They

(05:59):
needed to the ball against an A and M defense
it hasn't been great against the run lately, and they
got that job done. They ran the football, and they
made A and M play with a little different style.

Speaker 6 (06:08):
Took a while for A and M to pull away.

Speaker 5 (06:10):
They didn't throw the ball downfield, they threw short passes,
didn't rely on the running game to really hurt Missouri early.

Speaker 6 (06:17):
And there's just a lot of things going on.

Speaker 5 (06:19):
But when your quarterback is a true freshman and unable
to function against a good pass defense and an unbelievable
pass rush that A and M brought. You really, now,
when the game's over, it can look back and say it.

Speaker 6 (06:31):
Was a mismatch in a lot of ways.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
I mean, who would have thought the third string quarterback
is going to go out in their first start ever
and take care of the number three team undefeated in
the country.

Speaker 6 (06:41):
It happened to be A and M. So it's a
little bit much to ask.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
And the real question is do you damage Matt Zaalers
for any future games, including the rest of the season.
Danny seven of twenty two seventy seven yards and really,
even more importantly, a fumble where he got stripped. They
ended up being a defensive touchdown for A and M.
Turned the game to A and M's favor. Kind Of
it is over at that point that may even be

(07:04):
more damaging. So Zalar's going forward is a big question.
You know, how will he handle it? Missouri still has
a good football team and a good season if you
can look past this game, But it definitely was one
that took the air out of the balloon because A
and M was just better all game long. Kind of
as you'd expect, and definitely at the end that you realize.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Did Zalor's performance was it Texas? A and M A
lot him a lot. What did you see that he
was shaky or you know, because he seemed pretty poised
in his first start. You've mentioned it many times and
sometimes you just get thrown in there and you don't
know what's going on. What did you assess when you
were watching him? Did he look spooked?

Speaker 6 (07:41):
He didn't look comfortable. You know, it's it's close to.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
That word, right, Spooked is kind of getting you in
an area where you don't want that associated with you.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
You're seeing ghosts.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
Yeah, he didn't look accurate, confident, you're going to it's
a very good pass rush, and you're trailing in the
game at all times, so you just not a lot
to build on in A and M.

Speaker 6 (08:02):
Really, their strength is their ability to disrupt pass rushing,
disrupt passers. They bring the heat in a big way.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
They don't have to bring a lot of guys, you
don't have to blitz, but when they do, it's a
heck of a surprise. So he just looked like a freshman, right,
I mean, just insert generic freshmen from around college football
and sit him in there. And that's the way Matt
Zalers look like. He didn't look like a lot of
people were talking about how well he looked against Vanderbilt
and how he has a size and kind of that

(08:31):
really good look of a passing quarterback that's going to
be successful.

Speaker 6 (08:35):
That was really an unfair evaluation of him.

Speaker 5 (08:38):
He really ended up being just a freshman playing against
a really good football team and playing from behind the
whole game and never feeling comfortable.

Speaker 6 (08:45):
And he didn't do anything to change yet.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
Danny, I mean, like I said, getting sacked and losing
a fumble and having a go to the other direction
for a touchdown, it's not necessarily your fault, but it
really could be something that gets in your head. The
fact that you can clean only seven passes and only
seventy seven yards just shows you that there was no
dictating from an offensive perspective, from a quarterback perspective of saying, hey,

(09:07):
we're going to hurt you here A and M. I
might have a bad play here or there, but we're
going to hurt you. For instance, when I got lucky
enough in my first start, Danny, you go back and
look at it. I threw a pick six early, and
I believe I had three interceptions in the game something
crazy like that.

Speaker 6 (09:22):
So that isn't good.

Speaker 5 (09:24):
But then you go look at the good plays and
you go, oh, those are really good. It was a mixture, right,
really good, really bad. That shows that in experience, but
potential here. I didn't see the really good Does that
make sense something? Necessarily it weren't. He didn't throw three
interceptions like I did against number one Nebraska in my
first start. But there were plenty of plays and the

(09:45):
majority of the plays Danny where.

Speaker 6 (09:46):
I could go, hey, you might think I'm going to be.

Speaker 5 (09:49):
A starting quarterback for the rest of my career and
really take things under control and be okay, you're not
always going to play number one Nebraska.

Speaker 6 (09:55):
Things like that. That's what I didn't see.

Speaker 5 (09:57):
I didn't see the positives like to take the step forward.
So this is really going to be an interesting game
against Mississippi State to see how Zoalors does. Is he
going to be capable of taking that step forward? Because
the maroon uniforms are no longer A and m's Mississippi State,
which gives you a big chance.

Speaker 6 (10:16):
But it's hard.

Speaker 5 (10:17):
It's hard when you don't get off to that start,
and it adds all kinds of questions in your mind,
the coach's minds, your fellow players' minds.

Speaker 6 (10:24):
The fans, everybody else. This is a very, very tough week, Danny.

Speaker 5 (10:28):
People thought last week was tough getting ready for A
and M going around on campus being the starter. This
week's five times tougher, with people now wondering and doubting,
not hoping for you anymore, but doubting that you may
not be able to get it done well.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Another thing they're going to have to look out. You
can't have bad special teams play when you're trying to
beat a good team. Missouri's allowed three successful fake punts
this year, and one of those was I mean, they
were still kind of in the game when Texas A
and M called for a fake punt and a guy
got a forty eight yard game out of it. Three
fake punts in one year's unacceptable.

Speaker 6 (11:01):
Yeah, it's having being.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
Around a big special team's focus in my family with Stanton,
my son is a special team's coordinator at Toledo right now,
and Stanton and Landry really made their excellence at k
State and helping out Case State when they played was
really on special teams. So and if you're around Bill
Snyder football like I've been, you obviously know all those things.

(11:25):
So it is the craziest equation because what you said
is correct. No one is going to be comfortable with
three fakes being played against them. But Danny, when you
put your punt team out, you are not putting a
bunch of defenders out there. You're your opinion, like, hey,
how about this running back, how about this wide receiver?
And their jobs focused like a one on one in basketball.

(11:46):
If you really understand punt return a play, it's really
either going to try to get by this guy and
block the kick, or you're gonna log him all the
way down the field for thirty yards and bump him
all the way and try to get a position. The
last thing you're thinking about is tackle somebody running towards you.
So it's something that Stanton laughs about. He goes, oh, man,
I don't know how you stop a fake. It's almost

(12:07):
impossible with the guys you have on the field, but
it's been three times. The only way you do it
is you go punt safe, you know, and you say
it's not going to happen. Take that strategy. But it's
been that kind of year for Missouri. So many good things,
Danny and yet a little missed opportunity and a little
of the middle.

Speaker 6 (12:25):
Not being filled.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
I mean, they played really hard teams and lost some games,
and they played really teams that they're way better than
and beat them. So where's the middle piece yet to
be fit in? Maybe you say Auburn on the road
could fit that category, and they did win that in
two overtimes. Kansas at home may fit that category, but
generally that's what's been missing. You know you're not as

(12:49):
good as the top level SEC teams, and you know
you're better than the bottom level, but where do you
sit in the middle in Mississippi State will not give
anybody much credit to the Tigers when they win this game,
but as we developed this week Danny and talk about this,
I think they do. I mean, it's pretty impressive what

(13:09):
Mississippi State has done this year. Their record does not
make you think that they're a great football team, but
when you look at their schedule and what they've done,
they've really played high level So they probably deserve a
lot more respect than Missouri fans are going to give
them on this last home game.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
It's the eighth one.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
I don't know if the Missouri fans are tired of
going to games they've never had eight home games or four,
but Senior Day agains. Mississippi State has a little more
danger in it because of Matt Zollis being a freshman
quarterback getting punched in the mouth by A and M.
But also Mississippi State not playing bad.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Football and they played against the other opponent that Missouri
is supposed to beat. If they take care of business
at home against Mississippi State and at Arkansas, then that
will be a good season at Oklahoma or that's just
a bonus. You don't expect to win that game. See
how it plays out for the Tigers. Well, Kansas now
is in big trouble as far as Bowl eligibility is concerned.

(14:02):
Their two remaining games after a buye or at Iowa
State and home to Utah after they lost another close one.
As Ay go to Arizona pretty much kind of lead
most of the day, had a couple of things go
against him as far as dropped interceptions, penalty on a
pick six, et cetera. But then they allow big drive
at the end and Noah Fafida is a winner. They

(14:24):
gave him trouble all day long, played their best game
of the year on defense, but Jalen Daniels wasn't great
in this game. Their running attack wasn't great, turned into
a grinder which we didn't expect, and Kansas lost another
close one again.

Speaker 5 (14:38):
Yeah, and you hate to have that end up being
a theme when you look at lance Leipel and all
the good things he's done at Kansas, and then we
should just stop and cut off the podcast and go,
you know, bye bye, because if there's anything else brought up,
it's not really smart for Kansas fans to listen to
because you've got a really good coach in lance Lepel's.
But Danny, doing a little research, I realized in overtime

(15:01):
or games decided by seven points or less, lance Leifelt
came onto the scene at Kansas and really did good
work in his first three years. He was five hundred
in each of those years, which is what you should be. Okay,
in really close games, you should win your share and
you should lose your chair. In a global statistical analysis,
you can't look at every game and who's good and

(15:22):
who's bad. You're gonna play some really good teams and
barely lose. You know the whole story. So that's pretty
much par right there or above, like, okay, that's good news.

Speaker 6 (15:30):
That's really interesting.

Speaker 5 (15:31):
Seven and seven in his first three seasons, but now
in the last two, Danny, he's two and seven, and
so your point is well taken. It's another disappointing loss,
the second time Kansas has lost a close game this year.
You know, the whole story of last year, one win
and five losses in those close games totally defined that season.

(15:51):
That ended up being five and seven and a disappointment.
They haven't had the number of events like that this year.
But you're right. You want to take it one game
at a time, and with a week off for Kansas,
you want to give them a chance to breathe and
get back to work and look at the good plays
that they had against Arizona. But you can't help but
looked at the schedule you go and say, or you're

(16:12):
gonna go beat Iowa State. I mean, who thought about
ku beating Iowa State anytime in the last five months.

Speaker 6 (16:17):
I don't know of anybody who said, oh, yeah, I.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
Think Kansas is gonna win that game until maybe the
last Friday and Saturday, Danny, I was talking to you
on Saturday and they're like, you know, Iowa State.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
Is really leaking oil.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
They got that Ireland curse whatever it is, and likely
to go down and.

Speaker 6 (16:33):
Lose the TCU.

Speaker 5 (16:34):
Well guess what, they didn't lose the TCU, Danny, Iowa
State one, and now they get a week off. I'm
back to thinking Iowa State should beat Kansas. And it's
a really hard game for KU, and Utah is playing
unbelievable football, So you're right, this is becoming risky. You
do not want to put two good football teams out
there in a row and end up with no Bowl
two years in a row.

Speaker 6 (16:55):
So a lot of pressure on KU.

Speaker 5 (16:56):
And the missed opportunity to Arizona really was a misopportun unity.
They were better throughout the day and had a couple
of plays where penalties were called that could have sworn
the game tremendously toward Kansas, and it didn't happen. Didn't
mean that they were given the game to Arizona, just
meant that Kansas hadn't secured victory, and then all of
a sudden, on the last drive, Arizona plays good football

(17:19):
and drives down the field and wins the game. So yeah,
super disappointing opportunity. KU was the better team in this game.
Arizona's a legitimate team this year.

Speaker 6 (17:27):
They've done a.

Speaker 5 (17:28):
Lot of good work, lost some unbelievably close games. So
Arizona's a good football team and KU is better, but
they didn't get rewarded for it. So now over two weeks,
hitting the reset button inclining, trying to clear your mind
from everyone telling you what what are they telling you?
If you're a KU football player and you happen to
go on campus, they go online a lot, now, Danny,

(17:49):
but let's assume let's assume they go across campus. It's
basketball season, you know, and.

Speaker 6 (17:54):
You and I talk a lot about that. It infects
a football team, it does. They're human beings.

Speaker 5 (17:59):
They don't like hearing that you're discounting what they have
left in the year. It's demoralizing. So it's not a
good scene right now. We'll see if they can bounce back.
They're not that much different than Iowa State. They really aren't,
So forget the cold weather or the grass or Iowa
State at home. They have a chance. But man, there's
a lot of pressure building right now to go get

(18:20):
that win, because you know what, I don't think Missouri
fans should end up being disappointed with this season at all,
unless they lose Mississippi State in Arkansas. But Kansas fans
they could be disappointed at five and seven two years
in a row, because the team that was out there
with Lance Leipolt and the quarterback Janelen Daniels is better
than no Bowl two years in.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
A row, no doubt about that. This game came down
to the finish, and of course, a lot of the
talking point and you know, I'm gonna sort of not
beyond Lance Lightpole's team on this one, not about the
decision fourth and two. I understand trying to kick the
field goal, A lot of people don't. Everybody goes for it. Now,
their defense done a good job all day long. You

(19:02):
force Arizona to go down and make a touchdown. You
got a kicker who has missed a kick all year.
It's a thirty yard field goal, it's basically an extra point,
and he misses it. But afterwards, of course the explanation
was and I'm not sure I think it as another
indication where at lance let Bull's getting a little defensive.
He said that he probably would have gone for it,

(19:23):
probably if Jalen Daniels didn't have to come out of
the game for that play. Well, I don't know if
you even say that, you know, were you gonna I'm
not even sure they were going to go for it
even if Jalen Daniels was out there. I don't know,
but I thought it was a bad look that he
said that.

Speaker 5 (19:42):
Yeah, his comments down here the last few weeks have
been right. People just get tired of your same style.
I guess you've got to give him the benefit of
doubt somehow, but you're right. It just you know, some
of these things just don't sound good at the time
that they're given to it. This is a modern analytical
world where everyone thinks, go for it is always the answer.

(20:06):
And guess what we'll talk about the Chiefs probably in
a little bit. Danny and Andy reads all aboard. I mean,
he's coming for fourth down all over the place now,
So even Andy's kind of said, yeah, this is a
no brainer, go for fourth down. But Danny, if you
look at something for a second, Arizona had seventeen points
in this game. This isn't an average of two thousand instances. Okay,

(20:29):
in analytics this game, the last time Arizona scored a
touchdown was early second quarter. Okay, You've seen many many
plays on the sideline watching your defense out there, and
Arizona has only one field goal since that early second quarter,
no touchdown since then. If you kick this field goal,

(20:50):
everyone acts like it's a joke and you've done something wrong.
It is completely different being ahead by six than three.

Speaker 6 (20:58):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (20:59):
That is very valuable because a kicker can hit a
fifty yard field goal pretty easily nowadays, and it doesn't
take a lot for them to drive down and do that,
but it takes a lot for.

Speaker 6 (21:09):
Him to go all the way to the end zone.

Speaker 5 (21:11):
You know that the red zone is a big filter.
You know, there's like a mud hole there or something.
It's hard to go all the way for a touchdown.
So his kicker has not missed a kick all year,
made like the last ninety kicked last year at his
previous school, he was on some record breaking streak. You
can't and he made a fifty and forty six yard
already in his game. Yeah, I mean he's getting buried

(21:33):
because the dude missed a kick, you.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Know, And then his defense didn't back him up. They
gave up a touchdown.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
So yeah, but if Arizona had to score seven and
wasn't playing with a free mind, he's a Danny kling
scale words. You like that free mind there, Danny, I'm
stealing from you. But don't you think when they ran
that play from the twenty four yard line and danced
Indian zone that they're playing with a free mind that.

Speaker 2 (21:56):
Had a field go in their pocket? Yeah? Yes, does that?

Speaker 6 (21:59):
Does that make all to me?

Speaker 5 (22:00):
Don't forget the pressure of trying to score from the
twenty four as opposed to zero pressure guaranteed going to
go to overtime.

Speaker 6 (22:10):
And Danny, here's something that.

Speaker 5 (22:11):
This is a Stan webersm Okay, if you're listening at
k State broadcast, missed field goals create momentum.

Speaker 6 (22:17):
For the opponent. I don't know why, but I believe it.

Speaker 5 (22:21):
And I would have been saying it like, oh, not
only are the Jayhawks only up by three and not
six right now, They've just created a momentum. So you
create a momentum you left them within three. They play
with the free mind once they get across the fifty
yard line and get into scoring position.

Speaker 6 (22:37):
So it's easier to.

Speaker 5 (22:38):
Run a draw if they had to score a touchdown.
Do you think the offensive coordinator would add the discipline
to call a draw in that play?

Speaker 6 (22:44):
I bet not.

Speaker 5 (22:46):
I bet he's throwing throwing, throwing, throwing. Okay, and k
you did a good job of sacking for feed up,
better than I've seen anybody do it. They came around
the edge around his backside. Did you see that in
an A lot of times when you do an outside
rush from an an NFL rush, at some point you
don't keep going on that arc like you plant and
cut back. Kansas kept going on the arc because what

(23:08):
does fafee to do.

Speaker 6 (23:09):
We talked about this.

Speaker 5 (23:10):
He retreats, So he turns around to retreat and runs
right into the sacker and it makes it the easiest
sack in the world. Great strategy by Ku, but so
this easy. Hey always go for fourth down. There's no
value in ever kicking a field goal and taking a
three point.

Speaker 6 (23:26):
Lead to six.

Speaker 5 (23:26):
Danny that there is room for that argument to be
made that that was a valuable kick with a that
was a guarantee make and chelts by my short field
goal right Hash, we make it. We're up by six.
Our defense is going to play good enough defense to
keep him out of the end zone and we win
the game. We miss a fourth down and we're only

(23:48):
up by three. Good chance you're going to lose this game.
Everyone acts like you make every fourth down by the way, Okay,
everyone acts like you got Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.

Speaker 6 (23:55):
And it's easy. So I want to point that out
as well. But this doesn't sound good. I'll give you that, Danny.

Speaker 5 (24:00):
But really he should have just been torn apart for
making one call when Jalen Daniels got injured or they
forced him to come out of the game it's four down.
But probably he's just being a little self reflective in
front of the fans. And most people say, we want
to hear the truth.

Speaker 6 (24:19):
Yes, Danny, that's right.

Speaker 5 (24:21):
They really don't. No one wants to hear the truth. Okay,
that's why there's coach talk. This is in an accident.
Over the last fifty years, coach talk came because they realized, oh,
the fans don't really want to hear what I have
to say after this.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
Game, right, they don't really want to know the truth.
Off a few good men all those lines and there,
let's talk about k State. Now, Missouri is resetting after
getting handled easily in their game, and k State was
on the reset after they were handled easily in their
last game. Now need two wins in the last three.
Schedule plays out pretty well for him. Oklahoma State on

(24:56):
the road, Utah on the road. That one's not so good.
But then Colorado at home, and Colorado's really struggling. So
this at Oklahoma State game against a team that's played
bad football most of the year becomes a very big game.

Speaker 5 (25:10):
Oddly, yeah, it does, because as soon as you let
your guard down and think, oh, I looked ahead at
the schedule and I know how it's going to turn out.
Everything's fine, that's when you get burned and Missouri can't
do it.

Speaker 6 (25:25):
Thinking oh, we've got we've got Arkansas down the road.

Speaker 5 (25:27):
We're going to this easyw and then suddenly you lose
Mississippi State. K State cannot do it, and things are
not timing up well on that front. Oklahoma State had
two weeks to prepare for the game, and they got
their quarterback fours back who started more games than anybody
else at Oklahoma State this year, Danny and you saw
what he did against Kue solid.

Speaker 2 (25:49):
Yep.

Speaker 6 (25:49):
I mean you look at the stats.

Speaker 5 (25:50):
He threw the ball well and they should have had
to lead at the half at KU. Then there is
some little information slipping out that the starting quarterback who
played only two series for OSU, scored a touchdown on
each of those first two series, then got hurt, which
started the dominoes following to lose to Tulsa and get
Mike Gundy fired. He may be back now, how rusty

(26:13):
will he be? Will he be ready to roll? But
KSE State's going to be playing against a legitimate quarterback.
Either one of those two will be a legitimate quarterback
in sync a little bit. And it's been a house
of horrors to go to Stillwater, Oklahoma for k State
And you might say, oh, that doesn't matter. Well, I've
said that a bunch of times, Danny, because I actually
traveled down there with them.

Speaker 6 (26:31):
Okay, I go to this game and go, Okay, State's
better than OSU today.

Speaker 5 (26:34):
Except for when I leave Stillwater? How did k State
lose by two?

Speaker 6 (26:38):
You know, by one by three?

Speaker 5 (26:40):
It's crazy there to case State better be ready and
that's going to be a story.

Speaker 6 (26:46):
Just real quick for k State. They need to be
Bowl eligible, it's a must.

Speaker 5 (26:49):
They need to win two out of the last three
Oklahoma State and Colorado, or you're most likely. And each of
those two teams, Danny are kind of flashing heading in
a new direction than they were a few weeks weeks
before with a new quarterback. So Colorado's story is not
being completely written because they're hitting the reset button and
starting with a different quarterback. So they may be different.

(27:09):
And I just told you the oklaham State story. The
other one that we'll talk more about Danny is Clint Bowen,
a KU guy has left.

Speaker 6 (27:18):
He was a Lawrence High High school coach. Last few years.
He left Lawrence High.

Speaker 5 (27:23):
His son is a quarterback on Oklahoma State's team, and
so he became an analyst for Oklahoma State.

Speaker 6 (27:30):
He agreed to do that with Mike Gundy.

Speaker 5 (27:32):
Well, they decided a couple of weeks ago to make
him the defensive coordinator and meet him the interim coach,
let go of the defensive coordinator that was in place,
Todd Grantham. The point is Danny about this reset button
and had been different than they were before. Do you
realize out of the three lowest yardage totals given up
by Oklahma State this year. Number one is easy University

(27:55):
of Tennessee Martin, Okay, that's the game they won, right,
you know what? The other two are Texas Tech KU
last two games. So Clint Bowen, I can give you
this stat real quick. Do you realize in every game
this year in conference play, Oklahoma State's opponent in conference
play has scored at least thirty eight points against them.

(28:17):
So if you mark down K State for thirty eight minimum,
I got a W for K State. Okay, But here's
a little curveball. You're in stillwater and Clint Bowen has
got this defense playing at a whole different level. No
one's talking about it because what do we say when
someone's getting ready.

Speaker 6 (28:33):
For Oklahoma State. Oh?

Speaker 5 (28:34):
I think I've heard us say. Even on our broadcast together,
someone might have said, oh, it's a bye this week, right,
you're playing LSU, Or hey, k.

Speaker 6 (28:43):
You's gonna get healthy. Remember we said that after the
K State game.

Speaker 5 (28:45):
So it's really weird that this is a bye, this
is the get healthy week. All those things are true
about Okaha State, but they are changing different things. There
are little seeds that have been planted of danger in
case State better be ready for it because if you
this game.

Speaker 6 (29:00):
Can you imagine ky State Nation right?

Speaker 5 (29:02):
Can you imagine no one is thinking about kse State
losing at Oklahoma State or Colorado. So everyone's deciding on
their bold destination right now, Danny and case State still
needs to win two out of three they do.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
Indeed, the Chiefs need to win too. We'll talk about
the Chiefs in the NFL. Coming up next on Danny
and Stans Football Weekend. It's presented by ASFCA.

Speaker 1 (29:25):
More of Danny's Reasonably Irreverend podcast. After this, we're.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
Here with doctor brad Woodhell from Advanced Sports and Family
Chiropractic and Acupuncture. And one thing we like to talk
about is the wide range of services that can help
you out mentally and physically.

Speaker 3 (29:39):
We offer many services from chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritional work, and rehabilitation,
and we take care of patients of all ages from
young to old and customize the care to help them
stay well and stay active.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
What are some of the things that you can do
to help that.

Speaker 3 (29:56):
The first thing we're going to do is we're going
to look at prevention. How do we keep you moving
and aligned? Ideally, just like your car that expensive car
is going to have your top priority and maintenance. You
want to keep it in good shape. This body of yours,
it is worth a lot.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
Advanced sports and family chiropractic and acupuncture. Eight locations all
around the Kansas City area, so you can find one
near you to do all the things that doctor Woodhell
has just stressed. It's asfca.

Speaker 6 (30:25):
Hey, Kansas City.

Speaker 7 (30:26):
Joe Spiker, Eastern Roofing here. Don't you hate it when
people start talking about Christmas before Thanksgiving? Even arrives me too,
But right now I'm that guy. Call Eastern Roofing today
and get on the schedule to have your custom Christmas
lights installed before Thanksgiving and receive a ten percent discount
on your holiday light installation. Stay off that ladder and
let the pros hang your custom holiday lights this year.

Speaker 6 (30:49):
Eastern Roofing integrity matters.

Speaker 7 (30:51):
It'll be real nice, Clark.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
We're here with Matt Lewellen from the twenty third Street Brewery,
Hence Brewery. So beer is important and you've got great ones,
Yes we do.

Speaker 8 (31:01):
And we've got a great brewer, Angelo Ruiz has been
here for three years now and just Bruce, great great beer,
always something new on tap. It's hard to say what
our best beers are because he always has a new
beer coming out for the season. I was asked earlier
today what we have coming up next, and I'm like,
I don't know. Ask Angelo. Come inside the restaurant. Talk

(31:22):
to Angelo, our brewer. He'll tell you everything. But he
might say he doesn't know either. No matter what it is, Danny,
it's a great beer, though, and Angelo brew is all
kinds of great.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
Beer, great beers, great food, great fun at the twenty
third Street Brewery, twenty third End Castle.

Speaker 1 (31:36):

hearing from you.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
Welcome back. The Chiefs took the day off. It had
the bye week yesterday. One of a couple obviously during
the course of the season. And I hope they didn't
watch a bunch of NFL football because there wasn't a
lot of great football. They are a couple kind of
fun games, but there was a lot of bad football too.
But we'll talk a little bit about some of the
good and some of the bad in a minute. But

(32:08):
this now has become a huge game for the Chiefs,
and I will let a little secret out. Maybe I
shouldn't say it said, I think you said under your
breath to me the other day when you were leaving. Well,
if the Chiefs don't beat the Broncos, they are very good.
And because the Broncos haven't looked very good recently, I
think the Broncos will play much better than they did

(32:29):
in their previous game. This will be a challenge. But
the Chiefs not only better win, but maybe they should win.

Speaker 5 (32:37):
Yes, all those things are true, but you do have
to factor in a couple of things. NFL teams normally
just bring it every week, and that's a great compliment
to those pros. It don't need to show much emotion.
They don't have adrenaline, they don't spike up and down.
They just play right well. Two weeks ago, I propose
something different to you, Danny. I said Buffalo would play

(32:59):
out of their mind against the Chiefs, that they match
up well with them.

Speaker 6 (33:03):
They know it's big time.

Speaker 5 (33:05):
The Buffalo Bills will play great football against Kansas City.
I also said, for many weeks Buffalo is not very good. Okay, now,
how do you make those things together. Well, I do,
I did, and I present to you Buffalo at Miami
as the end of my story.

Speaker 6 (33:22):
There, Danny, Buffalo.

Speaker 5 (33:24):
I watch each of their games. They are Josh Allen
putting the whole team on his back. Okay, and they
got a good running back, I'll give you that. The
reason why I point that out is I don't think
the Denver Broncos are a great football team at all.
I think the Denver Broncos best day isn't as good
as a Chargers' best day.

Speaker 6 (33:43):
Does that make sense, right?

Speaker 2 (33:44):
And even a banged up Chargers I think.

Speaker 5 (33:47):
Yeah, they keep getting injured and they don't have the
running backs of the line. But I'm telling you the Chargers,
and I'm not bashing the coaches. I really believe in
Sean Payton and Jim Harball pretty equally, Okay. I'm just
saying that Justin Herbert is so much better than bo
Nix and so much further along, and the whole team
around him is more athletic in my mind.

Speaker 6 (34:07):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (34:08):
Now, Denver's pass rush is historic, like the best pass
rush in twenty five years, Danny, you know, and knocking
on the door of being in the top five pass
rushing units, sacking units in the last fifty years. So
there's the one thing that they'll give you that you
better watch out for is they can bring the heat

(34:29):
and get to the quarterback that could blow up a
game or keep it more low scoring.

Speaker 6 (34:33):
But other than.

Speaker 5 (34:34):
That, Denver is just a solid NFL team with a
very good coach and the belief of, hey, we're gonna
win close games. Has come out to play well Chiefs
last year, right heights what your athleticism really is and
Denver's in the same boat. But saying all that, I
do think something that you mentioned that I think Denver

(34:54):
will not play up to the level Buffalo did, but
I think this is going to be one of Denver's
better performances.

Speaker 6 (35:00):
Makes sense.

Speaker 5 (35:00):
This is an NFL team that should play flat line
and just show up each week and do their thing.
But I think there's another gear that they have with adrenaline.
I think the crowd will be excited. I think it'll
be kind of that beautiful crisp air in November and Denver,
it's a special time of year in Denver. If you
know anything about Denver, collerade. On the start of the
ski season, there's a Pep and a step around there,

(35:23):
you know. And they love Denver Bronco football, so it's
a division game. They look to play the Kansasity Chiefs.
This is their life, you know. They want to beat
the Chiefs. So I do think the Thursday night version
of Denver was asleep. The international version against the Jets
of Denver was asleep. So they're not as bad as

(35:43):
those two games, and they're not great ever, but I
fully expect you're going to get the best of Denver.
So we'll test the Chiefs because what it did when
you saw the best of Jacksonville, that was a hard game, right,
Jacksonville is not that good. They played great and it's
the chief So I guess I'm setting it up.

Speaker 6 (36:00):
Maybe I'm hedging my bed. I don't know, Danny.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
I really feel there's some concern in this game because
I think the Broncos are going to play to.

Speaker 6 (36:07):
A high level.

Speaker 5 (36:08):
That said, the Chiefs are better than them every day
of the week, every day of the week, so it's
hard to think the Chiefs are going to.

Speaker 6 (36:18):
Take care of business and go out there and win.
When the Chiefs get upset, and.

Speaker 5 (36:22):
It's a division game, upset meaning they have that focus
and it's a division game.

Speaker 6 (36:27):
When do they fail? They haven't done it very much
in a Patrick Mahomes era.

Speaker 5 (36:30):
So I think, yeah, Denver should be beaten by the Chiefs,
But I do give you some respect that the Broncos
will probably play out of their mind and try to
create havoc and maybe what do they need. It happened
against the Eagles, a crazy interception when the Chiefs are
going to score. It happened in Jacksonville, a crazy interception
when the Chiefs servout race score something like that that

(36:53):
is a ten or fourteen point difference.

Speaker 6 (36:55):
Does that make sense?

Speaker 5 (36:56):
That dramatic is what Denver will need as well to
win this game. But would I put it past him
like a sack and a ball bounces and and right
to a Denver Bronco and goes in for a touchdown.
That might happen. The only problem is I've never seen
Patrick Mahomes ever do anything but have a yo yo
on that football Like that dude when he fumbles, pulls

(37:17):
it back in faster than anybody alive is that? Can
you even remember him losing a fumble after after boom
he gets hit, You go, uh oh, that's a turnover
and Patrick somehow gets it.

Speaker 6 (37:29):
Am I am I thinking of that.

Speaker 2 (37:30):
Right, Danny, I think he's lost. You probably lost one,
but I I can't remember many. That's that's for sure.

Speaker 6 (37:37):
So so something's got to give here.

Speaker 5 (37:39):
Either Patrick's going to have the bad break and the
yoyo is not going to bring the ball back, or
the Broncos or you know, going to make not make
that play. I think Denver needs something extraordinary to win.
I think he ins the city's better.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
Let's talk about a couple of Los Angeles quarterbacks to
wrap up, because first of all, I'm going to talk
about Matt Stafford. He said an NFL record yest today,
third straight game with at least four touchdowns and no interceptions.
He's been a great player for a long time. I
might make the case that he's one of the most
underrated players in the history of the National Football League.
He played in anonymity in Detroit and was great, and

(38:12):
he used to bring his team back but they'd lose.
Now he's won a Super Bowl. He's playing at a
high level at another at a late age. When he's healthy,
which has been iffy for him when he as a RAM,
He's been great and he's great right now and healthy.
I think Matthew Stafford deserves some.

Speaker 5 (38:28):
Bouquets, absolutely, And you said it all very correctly, because
we've been making lists of the top two or three
or five quarterbacks in NFL for multiple years now, haven't we.
When haven't we talked about that on our sports radio shows,
podcast casual conversations, you know, listing that top few. And
I don't remember Matthew Stafford being mentioned by very many

(38:50):
people over the last five plus years, Danny, and you
even think of it today because the bouquet that you're
talking about is absolutely I'm with you one hundred percent.

Speaker 6 (39:01):
Okay, But how about this.

Speaker 5 (39:03):
During the run of the Super Bowl, the San Francisco
forty nine Ers, it seemed, was actually the better team
in their own division. I really believed in the Niners.
The Chiefs wouldn't have come back twice against them. We
would be talking about how great the Niners team was
under Shanahan.

Speaker 6 (39:20):
They were consistently the.

Speaker 5 (39:22):
Second best team in the NFL until the Eagles came
along and actually.

Speaker 6 (39:25):
Beat the Chiefs.

Speaker 5 (39:26):
So I'll give you how about Eagles and then San
Francisco had been the two best teams other than the Chiefs,
And a lot of people are going to raise their
hand and say, what about Buffalo. Well, Buffalo's fine, But
so you put Matthew Stafford down there, and then at
Detroit no one talked about him except for on Thanksgiving. Right, Hey,
Matthew Stafford and his Wife's a great story. But he

(39:46):
won a super Bowl. Now, Danny, and he may be
playing guess what on the second best team and his
division again, what happens if Seattle is the real deal?

Speaker 6 (39:58):
They remember?

Speaker 5 (39:59):
I keep saying, there's in the NFL that looks like
a super Bowl team to me. But Seattle's knocking on
the door in my mind, Danny of being that new
team that's got it all together and going in the
right direction.

Speaker 6 (40:12):
Now, I think Seattle.

Speaker 5 (40:13):
Plays the Rams this week, right, So if the Rams
and I think I'm getting it, text me. It takes
me a long time here to get to the subject
of I agree with you. Stafford is unbelievable. He may
be after Patrick Mahomes, the best quarterback in the NFL
right now, and it may not be close. You know,
he is playing elite football and a talent around him.

(40:34):
You know, you don't know if they're great or not.
He just makes everybody look great. You don't know if
the defense is great or not. It just doesn't matter.
Stafford is killing it right now. And that game is
a very even game in my mind. But whoever wins
the Seattle Rams game could be in the conversation of
being the best team.

Speaker 6 (40:51):
In the NFL this year.

Speaker 5 (40:53):
And Stafford's won a super Bowl, So don't forget he
won a super Bowl. And then you think about the
Turks he plays with at Detroit in the numbers.

Speaker 6 (41:02):
He's put up. This guy's elite. He's awesome.

Speaker 5 (41:05):
And Patrick Mahomes and that no look past capability, we
call forget the fanciness of no look.

Speaker 6 (41:10):
Here's what Patrick Mahomes is doing super well.

Speaker 5 (41:13):
He is putting his eyes in a position that dictates
the defense move with his eyes. Linebackers will take debate
every time. A lot of times.

Speaker 6 (41:22):
Free safeties will take it as well.

Speaker 5 (41:24):
Some of them don't, but most do. Every linebacker is
going to take the bait. He looks where he's not
going to throw, and then he comes back to the
last second. Sometimes he doesn't even turn his head. Stafford
has been doing that all the time as well. He
was doing it before Patrick, and he is dictating with
his eyes so much like I'm looking to my right
and he turns or doesn't turn his head and fires

(41:46):
a ball over to the left and has the defenders
out of the area, and he throws a beautiful ball.

Speaker 6 (41:52):
I mean, that is a beautiful ball.

Speaker 5 (41:54):
Because you look at Dak Prescott is doing great things.
Patrick Mahomes is doing great things. The balls a lot
of times have a little shake in him. Right, you
know they're accurate, there's nothing wrong with it. But do
you see his football Danny right, Aaron Rodgers like, right, yes,
I mean that thing is spinning.

Speaker 6 (42:12):
And can you think about any pass?

Speaker 5 (42:14):
How about up and high, deep over the middle, over linebackers,
before safeties, sidearm around people. I mean every throw looks very,
very comfortable. Well, so I'm glad you brought him up.
He deserves a ton of credit. And if we started
down our list, I won't waste the time. Now he
would be knocking on the doorway. Why isn't he number two?

(42:35):
Why isn't he right after Patrick Mahomes? Don't always just
tell me about Josh and Lamar and Joe Burrow.

Speaker 6 (42:41):
So he's totally underrated.

Speaker 2 (42:43):
Well, let's talk a little bit about another guy who
I think is maybe right now doing a Josh Allen,
which is justin Herbert under siege all the time. His
offensive line is banged up the running backs they played
in the game the other day, including a guy who
almost went for one hundred yards or on the practice
squad before the couple of weeks, and he's taken the punishment.
He's running when he needs to be. Herbert's playing some

(43:06):
great football.

Speaker 5 (43:07):
Yeah, he is such a likable guy, big body Josh
Allen type, probably a stronger arm than Josh Allen.

Speaker 6 (43:16):
He's learned to have touch.

Speaker 5 (43:17):
They said it really well on the broadcast last night
that he's learned football better and he anticipates better so
he can take a little bit off the ball and
make it more catchable because he used to wait until
this is really a fact about him. I think he
used to wait and see who that a guy was open,
and then throw a fastball that made it through all
the defenders and it didn't come in late because he

(43:39):
just threw it so well. But now a little bit
like Stafford, he sees the window and can throw it
a little bit earlier. He is running the football, which
he might not have before, but this is like the
Wizard of Oz when he came out, I said, fine,
you know, starting NFL quarterback, I'll give you that.

Speaker 6 (43:56):
But he's missing the heart. Okay, he just is indifferent.
He's a good guy, but he doesn't have to win.

Speaker 5 (44:04):
He's gonna go shake hands after the game and he's
gonna try.

Speaker 6 (44:07):
There's nothing wrong.

Speaker 5 (44:08):
But there's a different passion about the great John Elways,
Roger Staubach's Patrick Mahomes that you can just and Josh Allen, right,
you can just tell those guys we are not going
to lose and take control of the game. Well, Herbert
didn't have any of that. And as a pro he
was dangerous, but he didn't have any of it. Even
as a pro Danny he was growing and maturing and

(44:28):
getting better in every way, but he truly didn't have
that must win heart. Well, guess what, Jim Harball is
the one. He is the quarterback whisper. I mean, he
in his own weird, quirky way can get into the
head and the confidence boost and he can insert things
like heart, you know, like a movie or something. Just

(44:50):
gives Jim Harball some credit here, Okay, because he fixed
Alex Smith. He made Colin Kaepernick good. Okay, think about that,
and now he's doing it again. A lot of people
thought the Chargers would be better sooner, you know, and
would be where Denver is right now, in first place.
And why aren't they winning the division and surpassing the Chiefs.

(45:11):
You can get on Jim Harbaugh and say, you know,
it's too much hype. I'm telling you not in the
quarterback whisper area. He's got Josh Allen. He's got Josh
Allen like attributes in Herbert, and that wasn't easy to do.
I mean, if you're not if okay, you're a Chiefs fan,
you got to hate these guys. Okay, I get it.
But if I'm not a Chiefs fan, how do you

(45:31):
not love Joshua? I mean not Josh, you love Josh,
but Herbert? How do you not love him?

Speaker 2 (45:38):
Right?

Speaker 5 (45:40):
Does he do anything wrong? Like does he ever kick
anybody in the ankles or act like a jerk? He Also,
he's just like a likable warrior. I think Josh Chowlein's
the same way.

Speaker 6 (45:50):
I mean, it's hard to hate him, you know, one
of those.

Speaker 2 (45:54):
Guys, right, and and Herbert the pass he threw to
McConkey for the touchdown. Nobody in the world should even
throw that ball, let alone complete it.

Speaker 6 (46:05):
Yeah, and his dudes aren't that open all the time either, Danny.

Speaker 5 (46:08):
You know, Justin Herbert is I just I just been
mixing Josh and Justin up so much that I think
they've become twins. Because I got all the respect in
Josh's ability to take a whole team on his shoulders.

Speaker 6 (46:22):
But what's different about him right now?

Speaker 5 (46:24):
They both seem like likable dudes who are listening to
the coaches, throwing, running, getting hit, and a whole step
behind Patrick Mahomes with respect, you know, like, Okay, I'm
not as good as Patrick, but I'm gonna try. I mean,
they really have turned into the same guy. I give
Harball a ton of credit. I give Herbert a ton
of credit. It's not easy to take on the responsibility

(46:46):
that he has. And you're right, and I don't want
to write off the Chargers because Denver's in a good
position and they got a good pass rush, and we
got to respect the fact that they have a game
lead on the Chargers. But when it comes to playoff time, Danny,
if the Chargers can keep a rhythm at all, getting
used to whoever they have on the roster, they are

(47:06):
still going.

Speaker 6 (47:07):
To be the harder team to beat in the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (47:08):
If the Chiefs play Denver one week and Denver or
the Chargers in a certain week, I would rather play
Denver than the Chargers.

Speaker 6 (47:16):
I think the Chargers can rise up to a higher
level than Denver.

Speaker 2 (47:19):

Speaker 6 (47:32):
Thank you, Danny.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
