Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to the Danny Clinkscale Reasonably irreverent podcast, insightful and
witty commentary, probing interviews and detours from the beaten path.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Welcome to Danny and Stance Football Weekend, always presented by
Advanced Sports and Family Chiropractic and Acupuncture. There are eight
locations all around the Kansas City area. I head there
every Friday and get fine tune. My wife goes there
every couple of weeks and works on a neuropathy, be
it a bad knee, a bad back, just general well being.
See doctor Woodhell and his fine crew at Advanced Sports

(00:36):
and Family Chiropractic and Acupuncture. They are the ones to
see well. I was just saying to Stan, are you ready?

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Stan?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
And he said yeah, And then I said, well, you're
more ready than the Kansas City Chiefs were, And that
certainly was the case yesterday, big game. They started slowly,
they finished poorly. In between they were okay, but that
wasn't enough. As and bow Nicks outplayed Kansas City and
Patrick Mahomes and now have complete control of the division

(01:06):
and the Chiefs are in real scramble mode to make
the playoffs. Somehow, they're listed as over fifty percent, even
though there are two games behind all their pursuers, because
their closest pursuers have all beaten them this year. We'll
talk about all the reasons why the Chiefs are a
five hundred team right now and lost yesterday, and the
college ranks. We saw a couple of actually good wins.

(01:28):
I don't know if the team's played great, Ahmad Hardy
certainly did, but two willing opponents, it made life easy
for Missouri and Kansas State, especially Kansas State, to get
victories that they badly needed, and that's really all that
matters in the end. Will break those down and have
some other NFL and college football notes to bring you.

(01:50):
It's all part of Danny and Stan's Football Weekend presented
by ASFCA, and we get Rollin'.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Next more of Danny's Reasonably Arend podcast.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
After this, we're here with doctor Brad Woodell from Advanced
Sports and Family Chiropractic and Acupuncture. Staying active and being
active is part of a healthy lifestyle and something to
make you happy, but also maintaining the level of fitness
so that you can do it is important.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
We all want to perform better, whether we're ten. Moving on,
to our next level of sports or whether we're fifty
wanting to maintain those sports. Staying in motion is the key,
but that motion isn't just the only part. If our
motion isn't balanced with our muscles, with our joints and
communicating through the nervous system, we are not staying well.
And that's where chiropractic can change your life.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
And you have all kinds of things here at the
clinics to do that.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
Lots of different touches and techniques. So if you're used
to traditional chiropractic, you are going to be amazed at
all the many different touches, techniques, therapies, and state of
the art equipment that helps you perform.

Welcome back in a long time ago, Stan. Bill Parcells

(04:45):
is famous for saying you are what your record is,
and usually it takes some time during the season to
get to the point where people are ready to say that.
I still don't think they're ready to say that about
the Chiefs, but here they are five and five, big
game time, coming off of bye. All the time I'm
from the preparation, and the Chiefs were sloppy. Patrick Mahomes
wasn't very good. Defense was okay, but not at the

(05:06):
right times. Where are we are the chiefs of five
hundred teams?

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Dan Well? I really respect Bill Parcells, Danny, and so
I am not in the mode of usually saying I
don't want to agree with Bill Parcells, so that's not
putting me in my normal position. But I do think
we have a caveat that you'll completely understand. To go
away from what Bill Parcells said, you can't say you're

(05:33):
an elite, dominant Super Bowl champion and have a five
hundred record. Okay, you know I get that, But it
is okay to think about this a little bit more
in modern football, these long seventeen game schedules and the
fact that you know they don't try in the preseason,
they use the first quarter of the season to get
in shape. You know, there's a lot of things going on,

(05:53):
some NBA type of mentality. Almost, Hey, if we turn
it on at the end and play great in December
and roll into play that may work. The Chiefs have
kind of leaned on that a little bit the last
few years, saying that's where we're going to hit our
stride and maybe that will happen again. But my point
here is I don't think the Chiefs were an undefeated
fourteen and oh fifteen and oh type of team last year. Okay,

(06:15):
so if we can go back to last year for
a second, to put this year in more of a
fair perspective, I don't think the Chiefs were what the
record said. Does that make sense? So I don't think
the differential between last year's football team.

Speaker 8 (06:28):
Can't see Chiefs and this year's.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Football team if they faced off against the same opponents
for three weeks in a row, are much different now.
Winning every close game last year meant the Chiefs were undefeated.
Losing every single score decision game this year being zero
to five makes the Chiefs five hundred. So I'll propose
in this instance, no, the Chiefs are not just a

(06:52):
five hundred team as you would think through a ten
game schedule in most of NFL history and last year,
I would not have said, oh, there are ten and
oh team. Last year's team probably was an eight and
two team and this year's team's a seven and three team.
But they don't look that way at all when you
look at the standings and the positioning and then maybe
swagger component the intimidation, you know, that's what I think

(07:15):
is maybe at play here is there has been a
giant intimidation factor about the Chiefs, like we're going to
win in the end, and the other team's like, uh, oh,
they're going to win in the end, and even to
play them, it's really a hard day and a likely
loss for the opponent. Now that did bring out is
I point out often, Danny, the best of the opponents.
You know, they played really hard against the Chiefs, but

(07:37):
still they kind of worry at the end of the game, like, oh,
Patrick Mahomes is going to make a play and we're not,
and that is definitely going to be thrown out the door.
With a five and five record, I think that makes
a big difference as we move forward to the Indianapolis
Colts game, when we look at these teams and how
they actually played football. I think the Colts will have
a better chance of winning this game after the Chiefs

(07:59):
lost to because I think they'll give it a good
shot and go.

Speaker 8 (08:03):
Yeah, this is the Mighty Chiefs. But we can.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Think about winning the game in the end. It's not
as much of an intimidation factor, if that makes sense.
So the Chiefs are a good team. They definitely aren't
a great team, but they weren't a great team last year.
I'll point that out. The big thing, my big theme, Danny,
is the hurdle to touch the top of the group.
How about if I say table, would that sound really cool,

(08:27):
almost soccer like to you, Danny.

Speaker 8 (08:29):
I think there's a table.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Don't think talking about something at the top of the
table anyway, if it makes sense, the best teams in
the NFL are not really that good this year twenty
twenty five, and that is the whole saving grace of
the whole season, Danny. That's not something you want to
lean on week after week after week because suddenly Parcels
is gonna come true and just say you are what

(08:51):
you are. But the Chiefs this year are not that
far off from what the best team is playing out there,
the Denver Broncos. How many games do they won in
a row? You know, a lot. Why wouldn't you consider
them in the best record in the AFC. Why wouldn't
you consider them the number one seed? Well, we just
watched a game, Danny, where Patrick Mahomes threw a super

(09:13):
bad interception, and we saw the Chiefs not play their
best football and they were right there in it at
the end. So I just don't propose that Denver or Buffalo,
or Indianapolis or New England or that dominant or in
the NFC Seahawks, Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears.

Speaker 8 (09:32):
Now, there's no one that's that great right now.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
And that's the only good thing about where the Chiefs
are right now is they still have an outside chance
because there's really no Super Bowl legitimate teams in the
NFL this year.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
This is a close game throughout. Kareem Hunt averaged almost
five yards of carry and he only carried the ball
thirteen times. In Patrick Mahomes through it forty five. We
know that Andy Reid likes to throw the football. He's
got Patrick Mahomes. But is that too much?

Speaker 3 (10:02):
It might be, but you know he is brilliant and
he's gonna say. I well, going into the game, Danny,
I predicted twenty three sixteen Chiefs win, and I was
watching the game going, I think we're gonna hit on
twenty three sixteen here. But I said, the Chiefs are
gonna have to get rid of the ball really quickly.
Patrick Mahomes is already doing that, Danny. So he just

(10:22):
is substituting that super quick pass right the running game.

Speaker 8 (10:27):
That quick hit that Kelsey for seven yards to.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
Him, that's a running play, right. You know, we're just banging.
So you gotta play along with Andy there. Maybe he
should run a little bit more, I'll give you that,
but that's not how he believes you win football games
in the NFL. Taking a ball out of Patrick Mahomes's
hand is a favor to the defense.

Speaker 8 (10:46):
If you and I Danny are defensive.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
Coordinating for whoever Denver or Buffalo or phill in the blank,
don't we would rather see them handed off to Kareem
Hunt and have him power through for seven yards.

Speaker 8 (10:59):
Oh yeah, really hurt us?

Speaker 3 (11:00):
You know, No, you're worried about Patrick Mahomes making the
spectacular plays and converting on third down. So I'm not
much as much in that camp. Maybe in this instance
when you knew the Denver pass rush was elite and
it really turned you into a quick passing team. But
I think there's one thing that we need to point
out before we go too far. And I know you

(11:21):
will follow me on one leg of this and probably
the other day because it's not hard for me to
relate to what you're thinking. The Chiefs actually did gun
the ball downfield a number of times. Okay, Patrick Mahomes
is not an elite accurate deep ball thrower, right, we

(11:41):
agree with that. Yeah, we've seen it, no debate, right,
if people have listened to you and I talk, Patrick
keeps the ball out of harm's way on those deep passes.

Speaker 8 (11:50):
You know he overthrows it.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
But he doesn't cut your heart out with that deep
ball like some other quarterbacks might.

Speaker 8 (11:56):
That's not his best attribute.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
Okay, but he hit one big one to Thornton and
he got two forty ish pass interference calls. No one's
counting that in the stats, right, everyone's saying all the
stats are equal.

Speaker 6 (12:12):
Danny.

Speaker 8 (12:12):
You look at these two teams and you know it's
a it's an even ball game.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Well, you know one place it wasn't even. That was
in the penalties chiefs. Ten penalties for sixty nine yards.
That's probably what you should average. We don't talk about
that a lot, but seven yards of penalty that's about
right on average. Okay, you know what Denver's ten penalties,
they had ten two one hundred and forty seven yards
because two of his bombs that were incomplete in our minds,

(12:40):
were actually moved the ball down the field, so they
actually hit three of them if you include the pass
interference calls. So Andy, throwing the ball deep was a
good compliment to just firing a ball down the line
real quick, or hitting Travis super quick and not letting
that pass rush get in there. So I'll go back
to this, Danny, because You're the one person I've talked

(13:02):
to about this more than anybody else. Is that Patrick
has been putting this team on his back for two
plus years. Now, Okay, that the roster of the Chiefs
throw out there, especially when Chris Jones is not as
motivated he was against Denver, but he hasn't been playing
that way this year, and Travis is getting older. I mean,

(13:23):
that's no sin. He's actually doing better this year. But
where are they different than the other teams in the NFL?
I mean, seriously, I think you could trade the roster
of the Chiefs with many rosters and if you had
a year's worth of coaching with Steve Spagnola, Andy Reid
and the staff, that they would play just like the
Chiefs do. There are not that many dominant players. Oh,

(13:44):
you want to give me Rashi Rice? Is that what
you not?

Speaker 8 (13:46):
Not you, Danny, But people want to raise it. Oh,
Rashi Rice, he's a dominant What has he.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
Done to be a dominant player? Danny? You should we
count him on his path to the NFL Hall of Fame?
Not me. He's a good player, but he's not He's
had spurts. He's also got in trouble you know. No,
the Chiefs are a team that Patrick is carrying on
his back by scrambling, running, getting in the right play, audiblizing,

(14:11):
doing everything. And if he's a little bit off, which
every quarterback I've ever seen in the NFL history has been,
including my guy, Roger Staubach or John Elway. They didn't
play perfect games. They did good fourth quarter work. My
point is is Patrick's starting to make some little mistakes
here or there. The interception against Buffalo, the two interceptions
that he threw because the one that was early returned,

(14:34):
that penalty had nothing to do with Patrick's mind. Didn't
know there's a flag. So Patrick's made a mistake here there,
and guess what, it causes the Chiefs to lose barely.
But I don't know if you follow what I'm saying.
He is carrying this team on his back. They're not
that great a team. They're super well coached and they
have Patrick Mahomes and if he just blips a little bit,

(14:57):
it could cost him the game. And here's another example
where plus a special teams blunder here or there.

Speaker 8 (15:02):
You know, miss Pat might have been the game. Yep,
But were you focused in on?

Speaker 3 (15:07):
But I'm saying, let's count the pass interference calls into
the passing game to give that part of the unit
more credit. Because everyone wants to say, what all you
should have run twenty more plays? No, I don't know.
I mean a Chiefs are what they are. They throw
the ball right.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Well, how about this one courtesy of of Sam McDowell
and the Kansas City Star. Because you mentioned that Mahomes
is so important. We saw Josh Allen have to play
Superman yesterday to win a game. He made a couple
of mistakes, but overcame him with six touchdowns of his own.
But after throwing a couple of incompletions late in the game,

(15:43):
Mahomes has completed only twenty one of forty seven fourth
quarter throws this year when either tied or trailing. There
are thirty nine NFL quarterbacks who've thrown enough passes to
qualify for that stat, and Patrick Mahomes is dead last,
thirty nine out of thirty nine.

Speaker 8 (16:01):
Yeah, and that's really important.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
It's important to say because he was the one guy
just blast back four five, six years ago, Danny third
and twelve, third and fifteen. You look at the stats.
No one makes those, Okay, No, one converts in those.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Sitas, and the Chiefs convert him a lot. They overcame
a first and twenty a third and eighteen yesterday they
still did it. Didn't even in game, they didn't win.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
Well, this is so unusual that you get by with
this stuff that Patrick has set that tone, and then
we get into a fault sense of security, possibly that
he's going to do it all the time and he's
not okay, and so those things are all notable. You know,
maybe maybe it's he's off a little bit that unbelievable

(16:46):
confidence that he has to face illogical situations like the
super Bowl. Okay, you don't come back from two scores
down in Super Bowls in the second half and in
the fourth quarter.

Speaker 8 (16:56):
But Patrick opens his mind up and says why not.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
But at some point the realities are are getting into
Patrick's brain.

Speaker 8 (17:05):
And you and I have also spoken about this.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
He needed to be better from the pocket about three
years ago, right, And what did he do? Spent the
off season and he became better from the pocket, and
he now understands how important it is to not have interceptions.
He's even said at the podium, you know, I need
to be a little more aggressive so I think there's
like a thousand thoughts going through his head, which include

(17:28):
coach talk, which includes unbelievable.

Speaker 8 (17:31):
Understanding of analytics and all those things.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
He's still producing at a high level, But I don't
think there's just just that clear minded, rare confidence that
it's just going to work out and I'm gonna make
a play. Is that sometimes? Knowing what made britt far
unbelievables he was not smart enough. What are the I
don't want to be too mean here, I wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
His post career has sub cemented his not being very smart,
So you.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
Know that was helpful to him. Where Andy was even
on the sideline with him and said why did you
do that? And it would be like, well, I don't know.
I thought he was open.

Speaker 8 (18:09):
Well he was our.

Speaker 3 (18:10):
Fourth option and you were supposed to look at first
two and you didn't even look at him.

Speaker 8 (18:13):
What's going on?

Speaker 3 (18:14):
You know? You see this? I think Patrick is doing
a great job. He's still carrying a team. The thing
that he couldn't do against Denver and against Buffalo is
run the ball right? Why was that against Buffalo? It
was the best plan I've seen anybody throw out there.
I'm not a big fan of Buffalo's coaching and all that.

(18:34):
It's just good NFL coaching, not dominant. But if you
go back and watch the tape, they really sequenced their
rushers and held the pocket and had the spy come
at the right angle. I thought they did a really good.

Speaker 8 (18:45):
Job of saying, epic, you're not going to run.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
You've got to throw the ball. Okay, and then Bosa
had his best game of his life. And he's totally
unreliable as seen yesterday. He screwed up yesterday like normal.
But the other thing is Denver is not like Buffalo.
That wasn't schemed up as much as that's what they do.
And they rush the quarterback. They didn't just blow past
like Derrick Thomas and fly at Patrick Mahomes. They kind

(19:11):
of come slowly at you, right. They march towards you,
but they say you're not running. You aren't running, which
makes that aspect of Patrick play go away. I'll just
give it to Buffalo and Denver and say that any
team in the NFL that can constantly throughout a game
make Patrick throw only and not run, not play man

(19:35):
and man, let him slip through and run for ten
or fifteen yards or third down really takes away a
big aspect of his game. And I'm not on Patrick
Mahomes at all, but I think he probably has so
many thoughts in his head right now that it's a
little hard to play the free flowing, outrageously confident, fun

(19:55):
loving style. And he's got a he may not be
to play that way and for the Chiefs to win,
because Tyreek Hill's not out there anymore, a young Travis
Kelsey's not out there anymore. Playing with a little bit
more of a slower paced football, smarter football might be
the best way for the Chiefs to win. I don't know.

(20:17):
All I know is he's got a big bund on
his hand because who else is along with him to
be a champion?

Speaker 8 (20:23):
Who do you point to?

Speaker 3 (20:24):
Danny?

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Right, he's clearly the leader. And you know, I take
it to the start of games. Why aren't they showing
up at the start of games more? This is like
years now. They you know, they get the biggest game
in the world here and Denver's dominating early. They stopped
him for two field goals. But I mean the game
could have got away right at the start. I mean,
I don't get it. But let's let's move on to

(20:45):
the Colts next week. They'll be coming off of BUYE.
They've played good football when they've played sort of to
their way of playing, leading being able to run the football,
allowing their new quarterback to be comfortable. But they've been good.
And everybody's touted their roster for a while and said
if they only get decent quarterback play, they're going to
be fine. Well now they're fine.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yeah. I think this game's becoming a lot more dangerous
than I thought.

Speaker 8 (21:11):
It was before.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
Obviously, you started the year saying they're going to beat
the Colts for a boarding game. Then you went halfway
through the season or almost halfway, and you're going, oh, man,
the Colts are really playing good. But we know that
they're not used to prime time and they're coming into
Arrowhead and the Chiefs.

Speaker 8 (21:26):
Will you take notice and beat them up?

Speaker 3 (21:29):
I think right now their chances just shot up because
of that Denver game.

Speaker 8 (21:34):
I think that the thing.

Speaker 3 (21:36):
That we're missing right now is Steve Spagnola's defense is
not throwing very many quarterbacks off their game completely. The
secondary is not locked in on the man and man
coverage and dominating.

Speaker 8 (21:50):
They were very physical, you know, Tony Romo.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Always would basically tell us the listening audience that he
thought the Chiefs are getting by with bumping receivers past
the five yard markdown field and those kind of things.
I don't think we see that right now when the
ball left bow Nicks's hands, and even on your HDTV
you couldn't tell where a receiver was until the camera boob.
Isn't it amazing when the camera moves down that you see, Oh,

(22:15):
that guy's got a little room to maneuver and there's
not a safety right there working to Also.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yeah, I may I may have watched too much football
stand but I can pretty much tell when the quarterback
releases the ball when he's surely got an interception, you know,
and when when when he fires the ball, you can't
see the receiver and I'm like, oh, that's that guy's
open because you can see the comfort level in the
quarterback when they're letting it rip exactly.

Speaker 3 (22:41):
That's well said, But don't don't you think that's happening
a lot more than it has in the past. I
don't think that the Chiefs have three cornerbacks out there
that are dictating and dominating the game. Trent McDuffie is
really good. But I don't think any buddy out there.

(23:01):
I can't talk about any of the secondary guys and
really say, man, that guy would worry me if I'm
an opponent. And so if you can get a blitz
picked up, or if Steves Vagnola doesn't call the exact
right blitz, I think you can get the Chiefs on
even a third and twelve, a third and eight. That
used to be death zone with the Chiefs, but right.

Speaker 8 (23:23):
Now it's not.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
And I think that makes a giant difference in what
the Colts might be able to do, because if you
can get Nick Bolton blocked up a little bit.

Speaker 8 (23:32):
And Chris Jones, he'll get worn out.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
Or he's not gonna stuff the run all day long.
I think the Colts can actually be one of the
few teams in the last six or seven years that
can lean on the run game. And I don't think
that the mindset is the Chiefs. You're gonna score thirty points,
snap the finger to be the Chiefs. If they're going
to score thirty, you gotta throw. Doesn't matter what your
running game is, you've got to throw. I think the

(23:55):
Colts will go in and give it a shot to
do what Denver did. That's the only chance they have
to win. That gets the Chiefs has not exposed Daniel Jones.
What kind of passing game going in the game.

Speaker 8 (24:06):
I said that the.

Speaker 3 (24:06):
Denver Broncos with bootleg, get the quarterback on the edge,
make simple throws. Well, that's what Daniel Jones needs to
do this week.

Speaker 8 (24:14):
You know, just throw the ball to the.

Speaker 3 (24:16):
Tight end two yards downfield and see if he can
turn up and make seven or eight yards. And that's
a big time play. They have a legitimate running back
and Jonathan Taylor that is a legitimate running back old school.
They can actually give him the ball twenty times and
deal with a couple of zero yard runs and know
that they can stick with their running games. So I

(24:36):
think the Colts have a great plan. I think that
they're going to plan on the Chiefs scoring about twenty
to twenty seven points and therefore, if they don't make mistakes,
they think they can stay right in the game. I
think that empowers the Colts a lot. I think it
makes it a lot more dangerous game that they're not
going to put Daniel Jones in situations where he can
lose the game. And I don't think that Steve Sagnola's

(24:59):
defense can dictate that situation if they're willing to pound
and run the ball. Jonathan Taylor's good enough that even
if they go three and out once in a while,
it's going to stress the Chiefs defense. So Patrick Mahomes
and the guys are going to have to play really well.
And maybe, you know, like Rashid Rice has just got
to catch some balls that you know, pat tyreek Hill

(25:19):
caught every contestant pass right, think about that yesterday? Right,
there were three Grant interference calls, one Thornton bomb and
how many contested throws did the Chiefs not make three? Yeah?
At least yeah? Three? Yep. If tyreek Hill just snags
that ball, the Chiefs probably have twenty one more points.
That's how they dog people.

Speaker 8 (25:40):
In the past.

Speaker 3 (25:41):
Those are just such critical situations on third down and
right now, Rashid Rice may be dangerous, but he needs
to become reliable.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
Absolutely. Let's talk some college. Coming up next, it's Dan
Weber on Danny and Stan's Football Weekend, presented by ASFCA.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
Welcome back, and it's time to talk college football, and
the Missouri Tigers eventually catch and pass and roll in
their game as they end up winning handily. In the
game against Mississippi State, wasn't really that type of game,
to be honest, as Stan, it was a messy game.
I thought it was relatively poorly played. Matt Hardy was

(28:39):
running wild, especially eventually, and Missouri get out of there
with a win. But I think an opponent that maybe
was minding their p's and q's a little bit probably
could have given Missouri more trouble.

Speaker 3 (28:52):
Yeah, I thought it was a dangerous game for Missouri.
And this is kind of old school football mentality that
it used to be. You said, if we could run
the football and control of the game, we're not going
to lose because we're the better team. And you took
away a lot of the emotion. That's how old coaches
used to coach. And I just said, hey, we may
not be on fire emotionally, you know, we're kind of

(29:12):
bumped out about where the seasons turned and we lost
to Texas A and M. But we're going to physically
run the ball and that will secure the game. And
that's what happened because Mississippi State was dangerous, had opportunities,
made a dumb play here, But they're like the bug
that wouldn't die. I mean, every time there are two
scores behind, they didn't give up. And they kept like,
go ooh, this is getting dangerous again. And I said

(29:34):
that about five times in the game because I respect
that Mississippi State would bring it. But the answer was
the consistency of Hamad Hardy. It's one thing to run
for a lot of yards, but when a dude runs
for seventy five yard touchdown and a sixty yard touchdown,
you know, those kind of things get I get it. No,
every time they handled in the ball he was he

(29:56):
was more likely to make ten yards than five yards.
It was impressive. It was impressive. So the main thing
is they got out of there with a win on
a game where a dangerous opponent came to town, and
the game even played out where it could have been dangerous.
So two things happened. One, they win, let's get on
to the rest of the season most importantly, and number two,

(30:17):
what a great day for Hardy, I mean, what a
great day for Missouri Fansas say I was there when
he ran for three hundred yards? Yes, what so to me,
just icing on the cake, I don't think it's enough
to put him back in the Heisman talk, but it's
enough to give the team confidence. What do we say
the last couple of weeks seth Missouri's running game. It
doesn't seem to be dominating like it did early in

(30:38):
the year. Now we can put that in a rearview mirror,
because if you want to beat Oklahoma, you do not
want to drop back and pass every down. Okay, we
just saw that at Alabama. They tried with Ty Simpson,
an NFL quarterback, a Heisman Trophy candidate. They have to
throw because they can't run. And guess what. Oklahoma dominated
the game, got an interception return for a touchdown. Was

(30:59):
the better team? Can I put out real quick, Danny?
This is super significant. All this bashing of the Big
Twelve over the last ten plus years, and how much
better the SEC was.

Speaker 8 (31:11):
Let me pointing out to you.

Speaker 3 (31:12):
Nick Saban was a coach at Alabama when Texas went
in and beat them at Alabama.

Speaker 8 (31:18):
Oklahoma just went and beat.

Speaker 3 (31:19):
Alabama at Alabama. Okay, and a new coach the boor
had never lost a home game as the head coach
of Alabama. Oklahoma and Texas are Big twelve schools. These
kids were not recruited to be SEC schools. They're not
in the fine tuning of Southern drawl. No, these are
Big twelve schools that went improved that they could play

(31:43):
with Alabama. I think it's very impressive and something that
everyone around here, Kuk State fans, etc. Ought to feel
pretty good about. Like that was playing Oklahoma and Texas
has always been the real deal.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
Oklahoma is very unlikely to kind of look past Missouri.
They're in the playoff hunt now. They can't lose again.
They know it. You might ordinarily think after a huge
win like that they might have a letdown. I don't
see that happening.

Speaker 8 (32:08):
No, I agree with you, Danny. There's things that can
happen in.

Speaker 3 (32:11):
The momentum world that we talk about, and sometimes there's
just flat out true momentum and sometimes there's that choppy
played at the level of your competition and overlook the
next team.

Speaker 8 (32:23):
That's not what Oklahoma's going to be.

Speaker 3 (32:24):
I mean, you think about where Brent Venables was in
his first couple of years coaching. All kinds of question
marks Hey then going to the SEC You're not the
real Oklahoma. They've been hearing that, Danny. This group of
players have been hearing about that, and now you look
at what they've done recently and they're going, you know,
I don't want to hear it. We are legitimate. We

(32:44):
went to Tennessee and Alabama in back to back weeks
in one. This team, for the first time under Brent Venables,
is dangerously positively cocky and good. This is the worst
time to play Oklahoma for Missouri. If they go win
this game, congratulations because this is this is like going
and playing Oklahoma when they won the Big Total Championship

(33:07):
every year. Remember that Bob Stoops Oklahoma. You know how
hard it would be.

Speaker 8 (33:11):
For Missouri to go beat Bob Stoops Oklahoma.

Speaker 3 (33:13):
I don't care how good you are. Gary Pinkell was
good enough to have a great Missouri team, and guess what,
he was almost impossible to beat those great Oklahoma teams.
That's what this game's like. This Oklahoma team is nothing
like the four or five weeks ago Sooner team. So
I'm with you. They are extremely confident and excited. They're
sitting on the edge of their chair listening to every

(33:34):
word their coach is saying. They're not looking at their
social media at all. I mean, you know, the girls
patting him on the back, they're not even listening. They're like, no, no, no, man,
we are good. And for them to feel like OHU
football players is intoxicatingly positive for OU. So big, big job.

Speaker 8 (33:54):
This is bad timing for Missouri.

Speaker 3 (33:55):
I wish they would have played him four weeks ago.
I would have liked the.

Speaker 8 (33:58):
Chances of the Tigers a lot better.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
Let's talk about k State.

Speaker 2 (34:02):
There was a mandatory win. All through the game, you're thinking,
my god, they're going to lose this game, and they're
they're not going to a bowl and whoa, my this
is awful and they didn't play well. Avery Johnson said
it was his worst game. I'm not going to disagree
with them. I think it was a little better than that.
Oklahoma State just had umpteen chances. They down to down

(34:24):
were better than k State. They moved the football, but
they couldn't keep from fumbling it and throwing interceptions. And
in the end case State just said, oh thanks, I'll
take the win.

Speaker 3 (34:36):
Yeah, no doubt. I just mentioned how you have that
choppiness of playing to the level of the competition. I
could have stopped right there and reference KSE State at
State disciplin, Danni, and not get off on that side
subject because I knew you'd ask me about k State.
But hey, they just played a level of the competition
and that has now been without knowing it happened until today.

(34:59):
I wouldn't and be able to tell you this, Danny.
But in this four week period, in three games and
a week off, so three games, Case State has fallen
into that cycle of play to the level of the competition.
Remember they were underdogs against KU and they came out
with fire, and even after losing the first plays of
the game and down seven to NH and after a

(35:20):
kickoff returned fumble, they just beat the crap out of Kansas, right.
Go back and watch a tape against Texas Tech, Danny.
When I went back and watch, I don't think I've
talked to you about this. It's okay to anoint, you know,
Texas Tech and give them all the accolades you want
about how great they are. Fine, I'll give you that
Case State played them for three quarters dead. Even if
you go back and watch a tape, the speed with

(35:43):
which KSE State's defense was flying around Avery Johnson going
down for that forty six yard touchdown run, flying past
Texas Tech. I mean, if they don't turn the ball
over five times or whatever. They were making plays against
Texas Tech and pretty even with them. But boy, that
team that I saw on tape against Texas Tech or

(36:05):
at KU looked like they had their uniform stolen. At
Oklahoma State, there was nothing.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
I know, there was nothing I think that was a
bad That was a bad football game, stand I mean
from somebody who's just watching as as a neutral. It
was their penalties there.

Speaker 3 (36:23):
It was just bad football.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
I mean only only I mean anybody who was just
like watching college football and when flipping around was that
I'm not watching any more of that thing.

Speaker 3 (36:32):
Yeah. It reminded me back when I was doing games
for k State before Bill Snyder.

Speaker 8 (36:39):
Had hit his stride right.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
Yes, you know, I did some games or Ron Prince
games where it's a college game. There's a certain energy
about a college game. I mean, it's it's cool, okay,
and it doesn't matter if you know Northwestern is playing
Wisconsin and they both have a losing record. There's good
football players out there, and you go watch a good
football game. I've done that many times. I'm not bashing

(37:02):
these guys, but in this modern era of a bunch
of games on TV and you're choosing which ones to pick,
you don't need to go to this kind of game.
And I told Wyatt during the game, during the break
like halftime, I go, this reminds me of the things
I used to watch where neither team or national noticed
it was just a good college game. And guess what,
the crowd was half to three quarters full. I've had

(37:24):
plenty of stadiums like that, Danny, where it's good college
football game but it isn't pact. People are going crazy,
you know, And I go, I've just gone back in life,
like thirty years or something, because this was a good
little game with neither team being dominant in how they're playing.
Oklaoma State had no capability of doing it. You know,

(37:44):
they actually played pretty good, yes, or what they're doing.

Speaker 2 (37:47):
Oh, they moved the ball, their yards per play were
way better than k State. I mean, did a lot
of things well.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
Territory all day long.

Speaker 8 (37:54):
But you know they just never scored a touchdown. Okay,
can stay turned them over?

Speaker 3 (37:59):
When they would flash it would be dominant, like there
were a thirty yard run by Avery, Yeah, a twenty
seven yard pass on third down and long, a thirty
yard pass and a thirty four yard touchdown pass.

Speaker 8 (38:14):
That were all big time plays.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
And a run up the middle on maybe fourth down,
fourth and short, a big time fifteen yard touchdown run.
So those offensive plays for k State were they're better
than way better than Oklahoma State. And then on the
defensive side, there were pressures on the quarterback where they
hit the quarterback's hand as he's throwing and he popped
up a punt basically in the air to turn into

(38:37):
an interception unless the KSE State defenders smashed into each other,
you know what I mean, right, And then they had
a script sack and it's just a dead hit on
the quarterback.

Speaker 8 (38:44):
He's dead in the balls.

Speaker 3 (38:45):
So k State made defensive and offensive plays that separated
from Oklahoma State and made him look like we're way
better than you. But those did not come in as
often as Oklahoma State out playing KSE State down after.

Speaker 8 (38:59):
Down and ring the ball.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
More than fifty percent of their drives got into k
State territory, and even in the k State scoring territory.
These weren't drives that started at k State's forty eight.
They were starting at their own fifteen twenty twenty five.
So yeah, handed to Okama State for the good things
that they did and how hard they played, and it
still wasn't good enough. But KSE State looked like a

(39:23):
completely different team than they look like Texas Tech. If
they would have played Texas Tech like that, they would
have lost sixty to three. And if they would have
played like they did against Texas Tech against Okahma State,
they would have won. Yeah or whatever, you know, this
has been the easiest win ever. So now the only

(39:44):
saving grace of this choppiness is the k State players
ought to be pretty concerned about Utah. Maybe they'll play
out of their mind because they are a two touchdown underdog
or or worse. I mean two touchdowns Danny yah, I'm surprised.
I'll be prize if it's that close. Line's amazing.

Speaker 8 (40:03):
I don't know right now.

Speaker 3 (40:04):
I kind of look the other way and go KSE
State's not that much worse than Utah, But who knows.

Speaker 2 (40:08):
No, I don't think they're that much worse, but I
think the line Utah has been destroying people.

Speaker 8 (40:13):
So thirty plus point average.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
The right wins, but just the way they play, you
could wrap your arms around if you're KSE State, just
like I thought they could against Texas Tech. I'm not
as confident about k State going to Utah at all
as I was KSE State against Tech. I kind of
thought that was.

Speaker 8 (40:31):
Going to set up to be a victory.

Speaker 3 (40:33):
And if k State would have got the tenth point
and led ten to nothing early against Tech, I.

Speaker 8 (40:38):
Think it would have been game on.

Speaker 3 (40:41):
But hey, k State has been a roller coaster ride.

Speaker 8 (40:44):
Obviously the Army game.

Speaker 3 (40:46):
How do you lose the Army You play like you
did against Oklahoma State.

Speaker 8 (40:49):
Okay, so it's in your DNA. It's all over the
board for.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
K State, and KU fans are just sitting there going
why didn't they play like.

Speaker 8 (40:58):
That against us?

Speaker 2 (40:59):
Exactly? And speaking of Kansas, they go to Iowa State.
This seems very unlikely. The timing's bad for this game
Iowa State. It's about Iowa State. If they come pissed
off and ready to win some football games at the
end of the year. I don't think Kansas has a chance,
But Iowa State hasn't been like that.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
Iowa State's not that great a football team. Athletically, Kansas
has more spice really than Iowa State does in a
certain way, and they have great luck playing against them
head to head. So this game, I think Kansas's the
biggest chance. Is we talk about this a lot. When
you're used to beating a team and you're not intimidated
and you think good things are going to happen, I

(41:38):
think that's in play. Kansas beat Iowa State last year,
and I think in Lawrence a couple of years ago
they may have won three straight against him. I need
to look that up. I haven't thought it's too early
in the week, but they've had great success against Iowa State.
And let me tell you, Danny I said at the
start of the season after K State lost that K

(42:01):
State's record would be better than Iowa State's and conference play.

Speaker 8 (42:04):
I said that to the guys who all we are
still in the.

Speaker 3 (42:07):
Stadium in Ireland, and right now, Iowa State is three
and four in K State's four and three, and that
includes Iowa State beating k States. So the good news
is Iowa State has tradition, a great home field advantage,
and all those things that want to make you scared
about playing them, but athletically they cannot dominate. Their defense
isn't as dominant as it's been. Some people just want

(42:28):
to say injuries. Okay, fine, I called it after the
first game, before the injuries occurred. So KU has a
chance is how are they going to respond to sitting
around and hearing about basketball every day on campus? And
it was unfortunate for KU that Iowa State beat TCU.
That is going to give Iowa State a chance to reload.

(42:48):
If Io State comes out with purpose, you said it's
about them. If Iowa State comes out with purpose, I
think they dictate the game and win on the grass,
which is hard to play in the winter.

Speaker 8 (42:57):
Right now, I'll give Iowa State first chance. It's this game.
It's like you said.

Speaker 3 (43:02):
But if they at all just kind of play to
their standard level this year, Okay, he's not going to
be scared of them. And a couple of good plays
here there, and Kay, you can get out of there
at the victory. Because no one has giving them a chance.
They're saying, oh, you're you're not going to a bowl now, Noe,
you lost that Arizona game. How about they just pop.

Speaker 8 (43:18):
And beat eye with State.

Speaker 3 (43:19):
And laugh at everybody. It could happen.

Speaker 2 (43:22):
Stan, It's always a pleasure talking football with you, and
we'll do so during the course of the week and
always a pleasure and maybe we'll get some more success
next time around. On Danny and Stan's Football Weekend. Thank
you Stan.

Speaker 3 (43:34):
Okay, thank you.

Speaker 8 (43:35):
Danny handed off to Hardy.

Speaker 3 (43:36):
Yes that's the success. Yeah, there you go.

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant.
