(01:09):
When we last spoke on this program, they were one
to know they've gotten their first win of the year. Well,
now they've got two more in their back pocket. Coming
off a Monday night, went against the Crusaders of Holy
Cross eighty seven sixty nine, and they've got a couple
of days to go get ready for Sam Houston State.
We'll talk about sam Houston State coming up. The Bearcats
with a K, Sam Houston State, so we'll talk about

(01:29):
them coming up. And just a bit Alex Jensen joining
us right now. He's been busy at practice today. And
then you were just talking to the muss board, right.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah, yeah, no, just talking to the muss and we
were real excited because we the numbers are up from
last year. I think we had three times a mini
at the opener and you know, you see them at
football games and it's great. But yeah, we had the
meeting just in the in the next room to find
out ideas of what we can do and help them
to you know, fill the seats. Obviously, winnings the cure

(01:59):
all for everything. Well, and you're working on that. You're
doing a good job of that right now. Three and
zero so far on the season. A couple of games
since we last talked. Let's talk about the most recent one.
That was the one Monday night against the Crusaders of
Holy Cross eighty seven to sixty nine. Talk to you
after the game. I thought it was your most complete
game in the first three. I thought your effort was

(02:19):
good all the way through. You got good balance scoring,
and the opponent was never really in it. You guys
kind of kept him at arm's length.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
All night long.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, no, I agree. I think it was our most
most balanced game. I think, you know, every guy that
played had an assist. I don't think they ever once
we got that lead. I don't think they ever cut
up below nine. We had a couple of moments where
we got to fifteen and we kind of veered off course.
But no, that we rebounded well throughout the game, which

(02:47):
we didn't do in the first two games. We you know,
got out rebounded in the first half of the first
two games. So yeah, I think it was the most
complete game. And you know, the games will get more difficult,
and that's that's kind of like the lesson we're all
trying to learn together is like, regardless, just keep going
do it. Do do the basic things and things will
work out.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
So well. We mentioned the second game that was the
Weaber State game Saturday, and they outplayed you for the
first twenty minutes of the game. You had to talk
with the guys at halftime. The effort was certainly better,
the rebounding was better. You clawed your way back in
and you got to overtime and you won that basketball game. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
No, all the credit in the world to Eric and
Weber State, and I think you know, you could probably
argue they've out played us for more than twenty minutes
of the game. And I think you know, the message
was you can't you got to come out angry or
you got to come out like your down ten like
you can't wait until your downten to ramp it up
against anybody. And I think, you know, I think that

(03:43):
helped us get better and helped us play better against
Holy Cross. And you know, I told the guys, and
it's going to get more difficult with Sam Houston State.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Well, you're you're learning more and more about this team
the more games you coach. You man, I asked you
what you learned about your team in the first game,
and you told me that last week. Now you've had
two more. What have the last two games told you
about this group that you've got? Those are big picture
thoughts out we'll drill down on some of the individual stuff.
But last couple of games Weaber State Saturday, Holy Cross Monday.
What are some of the things you and your staff

(04:13):
are learning about this group?

Speaker 3 (04:14):
You know? I think, uh, you know, like I mean,
how to get you know, we got to balance the scoring,
you know, and weber we had you know, Don and
TB and they're for sure going to be uh a
games where teams scout us. They're gonna watch film too
and try to shut them down. So you know, I think,
you know, Abby, Abby did a great job last game.

(04:35):
He got more minutes finding his role, so I think
he's uh, you know, defensively he can affect the game
and just just kind of how it all blends together.
And the interesting part is we'll have James a concole back,
which I'm sure we'll talk about it. That kind of
that kind of changes it as well. But no, I
think I think what what I've learned about the team is,
you know, we we we we cannot hit second. I mean,

(04:57):
I guess you could say that about any team you coach,
but the and we're gonna give up the size battle
in some in some instances, but just that, I don't
think it was a great You know what was great
was TV getting on the floor on that on that post,
that loose ball, diving on the floor. So I think
just making those things habits.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
So you get the win Monday night, complete win, eighty
seven sixty nine. You shot the ball great, over fifty
percent for the ball game, really hot at fifty eight
percent in the first half. They shot it pretty well
early and then you guys got dialed in a little
bit more defensively. It's always easy to look at the
box score and talk about scoring. How do you feel
like you guys are on the other end where you
guys are having to guard a little bit?

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Yeah, I think we're better. I think it's got to
be uh. I think college basketball it's uh. You don't see,
if you don't play defense, you don't usually don't make
it very far and win. And we've got to build
on defense. And I think what I've tried to tell
our guys is that we can be fast, but there's
no offense without getting stops. You know, the defense has
to lead into the offense. And I think, like I said,

(05:54):
the rebounding was better. You know, Don Don and tb
you know are two of our guards had one rebound
at halftime and I think they ended with nine. And
that helps those transition baskets which are hard to get.
And then also the field goal percentage.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
So you guys get that win on Monday night, eighty
seven to sixty nine, a good balanced score sheet for
a second straight game. Terrence Brown's your leading scorer at
thirty six against Weaver State. And the funny thing is
in today's day and age, when you hear somebody has
thirty six, you think, oh, must have knocked down five
or six threes in that game, and that's you know,
TV can shoot it. But that's not really his game.

(06:30):
His game is getting to the rim, getting to the line,
finishing around the basket. He did that at a really
high level against web And again I thought the other
night for being the top of the scouting report, and
I have to guess he is right now because of
the way he's scoring. I thought he was. He was
really good at it the other night too. He was
eight of sixteen shooting and hit five of a free throws.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Yeah, yeah, And you know, I think I think the
Weber game he got to the free throw line fifteen
times as well, which is which is a big thing.
And you know, just I think we're learning that together
TB and the rest of the team, Like, okay, what
what are they going to give you? Like finding out
early are you going to be able to either you
might have a game where you have ten assists, ten
twelve assists or something of that of that nature, trying

(07:09):
to be a complete play player, read the game. Because
he's he's actually one. It's a great thing. I've said
this before. He's very aggressive, he has one speed and
you know, as a point guard, you gotta you know,
kind of I always tell our guys you gotta think
the game right, like like you got to beat him
in the mental part of it. So and I think
he's he's learning and he's done a good job. And
with you know, every every team we play, I think

(07:31):
it'll help us. It'll help us grow and and just
learning together, like using your teammates because I think guys
are so used to doing on their own.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
You've had a really interesting line from your guy, Sadue
Troory because in the first game, saydu goes for twenty
three points, he has four steals, he's five of eight
from three point range. Then the second game out he
doesn't score a point. He's oh for eight from the
floor and oh for seven from deep. And so I
was like, Okay, we'll see if game three against Holy
Cross as a bounce back game. And it was kind

(08:03):
of in a small way for him. But what I
noticed was he didn't take as many threes as he
did in the prior game. He just kind of, I
don't want to know if this is the right term,
but kind of let the game come to him, finish
with ten points. But he rebounded well, he guarded well
for you, and he didn't he didn't seem to get
caught up in the stat line that some guys are
after they put a bagel up, but in the game before,

(08:25):
you know what I mean, Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
No exactly. And I remember it telling him, and I
think it's just you human nature, Like after a game
like that, you think, you know, I had a great
assistant coach share that I think I had in my
career high and he made a I just remembered he
made a comment to me, like, you know, that that's
a big thing. But you know, the interesting thing is
always how uh how the next game?

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Right?

Speaker 3 (08:47):
And I remember we played New Mexico and we beat
New Mexico and I took it as a challenge. But yeah,
especially like you gotta just in your mind. I always
tell him, you compete against yourself, like you know, you
hit shots like not always going to happen, but you
can rebound. And I think that was the you know,
I think Satu went through that. He thought, you know,
he had the big first game. He thought he was gonna,

(09:08):
you know, duplicate that again the second game. Then against
tot of the Cooly Cross, that was the thing. It
was ten points, but I think it was eight rebounds.
And that's what we need from him in the defense.
Like the scoring will happen. I think the way we
want to play, the scoring will happen. But the thing
you can control every game is if you rebound or
defend things like that. I mean, the best shooter in
the history of the game misses half of his threes.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
More than half most of the time, but when he
gets on a heater, he doesn't seem to miss, does he. Yeah,
Alex is with us here. Tonight, Alex Janson coach the show,
which is brought to us by our friends at Bud
like the official beer sponsored Utop Basketball, easy to drink
and easy to enjoy. Before we take our first break,
just kind of give me your through three games right now.
I want to drill down on some of the other
guys here because everybody, we're learning about all these guys.

(09:52):
But what do you like most about where your team
is right now or what you're doing best through three games?

Speaker 3 (09:56):
You know, I think I think we've incrementally gotten better.
And we were, like I said, we were fortunate to
win the Weaver State game. I think it was you know,
I give our guys credit for not giving up, but
I think the I think I think I'm getting it
across to our guys. It's my first year, their first year,
but it's gonna get harder. We got to keep getting better.
You know, you hope to win every game. Probably not
going to happen for most teams. But I think we've

(10:18):
continually gotten better and learned and we've grown. And my
mentor used to say, your arrows going up or down? Right,
So that's the thing. I think everybody's defensively and rebounding.
I think everybody's been more of a priority for our players.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
You got to go back forty nine years to find
a team that won every game. Yeah, a guy named
Quinn Buckner, a guy named Ken Benson. Those guys were
on that last team that won every game.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Well, didn't we have you and l V in the nineties.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
But they didn't win all the way through the champions
They didn't know they got beat in that championship. Well,
the game this season before then, but they weren't undefeated
that season. Now they had lost a game somewhere along
the line. My buddy Everett Gray may be listening. I
know you probably know Everett. Yes, he was a member
of those run and Rebel teams and he was in
that final four where the great season came to an end.

(11:08):
But that was the last team that really challenged it. Yeah,
all the way to the championship game. Game I was there.
By the way I was at that game, Kansas had
beaten North I was covering. I was working for the
student radio station, and Kansas and North Carolina played in
that first game. Roy Williams again his against his mentor
Dean Smith. Dean got tossed from that game. I remember, well,

(11:29):
a few times he got in the final four, Kansas
beats him. And you remember the year before Duke got
run off the floor by UNLV in Denver beat him
by thirty in the championship game. That was Hurley's freshman year.
And so my buddies and I we did our work
and we were deciding should we go out and celebrate
or should we stick around for this game, because you

(11:50):
know unlv they're undefeated, they'll blow him out again. We said,
let's stay for the first half. We stayed for the
first half. It was an unbelievable basketball game, and we
were glad we stayed. Duke and Latner and Hill and
Hill and Hurley and that entire group ended up getting
to the final four.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
No, and I think one of those years, you know,
if he played the first two rounds of that tournament
here and I was at those games and then the
Huntsman Center.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
It was a lot of fun to watch, you know,
it was all right, let's grab a break, we'll come back.
We'll talk about some of the other guys and how
they're beginning to emerge. A lot of young players getting
time right now, and you're starting to see some of
those guys grow up before our eyes too. Are broadcast

Alex and I are now walking down memory lane trying
to figure out who beat you NLB the year they

(13:09):
won the championship. Everick, if you're listening, text me and
who we know. Nobody beat him till Duke beat him
in the semi finals the next year, and you're right though.
It may have been Duke in the regular season that
got him, and then they came back and got him
in the championship game.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Yeah, good memory.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
We'll see if that if that's indeed the case, And again,
if Everick's listening, he'll shoot me a text.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
All right.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
I was mentioning, you're playing a lot of young players.
You've got your upperclassmen like Traory and Brown and McHenry,
guys that have played a lot of basketball, but you've
got a fair number of guys that haven't played a
lot of basketball, guys like Oppamonte, Abbey, Kendall Sanders, Jacob Patrick,
who were playing good minutes for you in these games.
And I think I mentioned to you in the post
game the other night, you know, in some of the exhibitions,

(13:51):
and even in maybe the first game, Abby looked a
little maybe a step behind or a little off, wasn't
quite up. But I thought the other night he played
twenty five minutes for you the other night, Alex, and
I thought he was solid all the way through. He
had one turnover in twenty five minutes. For a point
guard that's got the ball in his hand a lot.
I think most coaches would take that. Ten points, six

(14:13):
rebounds in that game too, and a couple of assists.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Three says, yeah, no, he did. He did a really
good job getting us organized. And I think the one
thing that that he does really well is defensively makes
it difficult for whoever he's garden the o their team
takes them out of their rhythm. But yeah, I mean Abby,
I mean that that's not an easy thing to do.
He said.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
We acquired him late.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
And I always joke because the college game is so
different to you know, the NBA game. Just the spacing
and everything episodes. It's fascinating to me. But you know,
for a kid coming straight over from Europe, there's a
learning curve because it's a different game. The game's called
the game's called different, the pace is different. So credit
to him. I think there'll still be some some growing pains.
But yeah, he was great. And that was one thing

(14:57):
we said after the second game that we should, you know,
he should play a little bit more, and.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
We did that. I wanted to ask you say, the
game's called different. I think we're seeing that a little
bit with both Abby and Patrick because both those guys
have picked up some fouls. Jake had four in the
first year. In the second game he had three. The
other night, Abby had four the other night. Is the
game officiated a little bit different overseas than it is

(15:24):
collegiately or even in the NBA.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's definitely I think I think that
the NBA is trying to make, you know, take away
the touch fouls, you know, like bring back the physicality.
I think a little bit more. Yeah, Europe, Europe, there's
like different techniques like you know that. Yeah, you learn
how to get away with certain fouls. But yeah, it's
I think it's definitely officiated differently, Like traveling's called more

(15:47):
than in Europe than it is in in NBA or college.
So just getting used to how physical they can be
and how they can use their hands in their body.
But yeah, it's it's a learning curve. I remember when
I when I went to play to Europe. You know,
I traveled for my first two months. So yeah, there
is definitely a learning curve.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Jake Patrick, uh, he made one shot knocked down a
three for you the other night. Kendall Sanders though, this
young kid. I go back to this all the time
because when I talk to you and your staff the
first time this spring after he committed the intention I
think was to redshirting. You know, you were looking at
your roster and you're like, there's a good chance we
might we might put a little you know, get a

(16:25):
little experience in red shirting. Well, circumstances change and as
a result you're playing him. But I continue to come
back to the fact that he doesn't look like or
act like a freshman when he gets out there on
the floor. He had a really nice game in the opener,
had a nice game the other night against Weber, comes
up with seven and a couple of rebounds the other
night too, in the in the win against holy Cross,

(16:46):
and you can, you know, you can see when guys
are hesitant and maybe thinking a little too much, and
then you can see where guys are just playing a
little bit. And it looks to me like Kendall's pretty
comfortable out there for a freshman.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
Yeah, yeah, I know. It's interesting because we got him.
He was coming off an injury, so he wasn't full
goal and that was Yeah, that was definitely kind of
the intention, you know, because he's so young, give me
a year to to you know, so you can practice
and lift and and then you know, obviously the Bob
injury and you know, things played out into Kendall's credit.
Like I always it was another line I'll steal from

(17:19):
my mentor was you know, the players decide who plays
during a game, and you know, and I was able.
I think I mentioned this last week. But then we
showed a clip after the Weaber State game because Kendle
had saved a ball. They got it, but he was
running back on defense. But you see him sprint back
and pass other guys. And I played it for our
guys said, well, if you've ever wanted to want to

(17:39):
know how you get on the court, there you go. So, No,
he's been He's been great. I'll give him all the
credit in the world. I kind of it's kind of
good and bad for him. He's getting thrown in the fire,
which is, you know, kind of unfair in some ways.
But it's also great for him because it's you know,
it speeds up the the learning and the experience. But
he's been great, and I think he as a bright future.

(18:01):
He still has a lot a lot more growth too.
As well as he's played, he has a lot more
growth to be hopefully achieved.

Speaker 2 (18:09):
Yeah, he doesn't have though the frame of a typical freshman.
He's got a little bit more on him, a lot
like I'll make the example here Jacob Patrick, different positions.
I get it. Jake's pretty skinny out there. Yeah, and
he could probably be put on ten or fifteen pounds,
and he probably will over the next couple of years.
But you look at that, you look at Kendall and
you say, Okay, he can kind of that body can

(18:31):
probably hold its own for the time being. He'll probably
want him to get a little bigger and stronger, but
it doesn't. It doesn't look like he came right out
of high school.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
No, no, And you know, it's it's always interesting because
you talk about guys like that, you watch him when
like they're afraid of contact, they relish contact or they
avoid contact. And you know, I'll give Kendall that, Like
I wish all of our guys would be the first
to hit more often. But yeah, Kendall doesn't shy away,
which is a you know, for a young kid, that

(19:01):
not the always the case. But uh yeah, he's uh
give him all the credit in the world. And Kendall,
Uh again, I think you know what, you know what,
I'll say this about Kendall too, and I think it's
it seems like a like a duh thing, but he
enjoys it. I think he enjoys playing, which is a
which is a great thing. Like he enjoys complaying, playing

(19:23):
and competing. And because I think there's so many kids,
it almost becomes like a job.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Yeah, and it is in some way, yes, But you
know this because you've also coached on that next level too.
I think the average fan thinks everybody loves to play,
and everybody just has that love and desire. No, some
guys are just really good and they use it as
their career and it what they do. But they don't
necessarily love to play. Yeah. And there's some guys that

(19:50):
love to play and are pretty good too.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
Yeah. No, and and and especially with big guys, Like
we talk about it too, and when we talk about guys,
do they like to play? Do they watch it? Do they?
But like genuinely, and I remind our guys that all
the time, Like you hate to lose, you can be competitive,
you can have the emotional up and downs, but like
but like remember, like it's like how lucky you are,
Like you're you're playing college basketball, Like it should be

(20:15):
a blast, Like there's nothing like it. Take advantage of
the short amount of time you have to do it.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Who were your teammates. Give me a teammate that you
played with anywhere that love to play.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
You know what I'll say, Andre Miller, Andre Miller, Andre Miller,
he uh, he would, I'll tell you this. I remember,
I don't know many these stories. He'd come back from
draft workouts and he'd go play and be like Dre,
like you now wouldn't be the best time to get hurt,
like if you the weeks leading up to the to

(20:47):
to the draft, and but just what just loves to
play and uh, you know in the NBA that like
you do. I have coached some guys that you know,
if you do drills and stuff, they might not be
so excited, but like if you're playing, they'll always play.
Like Kyrie Irving's another guy like I grew up Pim Andre.
They're the two best ball handlers I've been around. And
I don't think any of them really did dribbling drills,

(21:08):
but they just grew up playing like and then I
think they'll always play.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
You love to play, didn't you?

Speaker 4 (21:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (21:13):
No, I you know what I I did. I love
to compete.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
I love being on a team with teammates and there's
nothing like That's what my team sports are so great.
You go through the highs and lows, and that was
the genius of Majeris as well, right, because you needed
each other to survive and get through it.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
That's exactly right. Let's take a time out. We're gonna
let Alex take a break for a minute. We're gonna
bring in one of his staff members, a guy that
helped put this team together this spring. He was the
he was the first hire, uh before anybody else was
on board, Coach chill As. They liked to call him
Rafael Chillius. Yeah, yeah, I know he was.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
He was. He was a one man show for a
few weeks, I'm sure. But yeah, he's great. Yeah, we're
lucky to have him.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
We'll talk to chill coming up next year on The
Coaches Show, which is brought to us by our friends
at Smiths. More ahead on the Alex Jensen Coaches from
ESPN seven hundred and the Youth Sports Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (22:07):
You were listening to Running Utes Basketball, brought to you
by America First Credit Union on ESPN seven hundred and
the Ute Sports Radio Network.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
Back on the Coaches Show tonight, coming to you from
the Huntsman Basketball Building. A couple of days away from
Utah and Sam Houston State. That's gonna by the way,
don't get caught up in the name like Sam Houston
Stay what league do they even play in? Well, they
can play. Look at the box score against Texas Tech.
They gave the Red Raiders all they could handle last weekend.

(22:39):
Red Raiders got beat last night by Illinois. It's a
good cross sectional game right there. But Texas Tech's good again. Anyway,
I'm gonna talk a little hoop right now with a
member of the coaching staff. He was actually after Alex
was hired. He was the second guy on the coaching staff,
and he was kind of a one man band. I'd
see him walking around the hallways and trying. He's always
on his phone. He was trying to find players and

(22:59):
help Alex putt put everything together. Here, Rafael Chilius with
us here on the Coaching Show tonight.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
How are you, Chill I'm doing well. Thanks for having me, Bill.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
It's good to have you. Let's let's talk about you first.
I don't know that people know your backstory. Maybe the
hardcore fans do, but you are a guy that has
coached and been on just about every level from the
high school prep school level, to the D one level
to the NBA level. In fact, you were in the
NBA last year with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Don't you do. You haven't had quite the basketball journey.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
I don't know. Someone might call it the basketball bagabond.
But I've coached well. My first coaching job, actually, I
was an assistant coach at University of Victoria in Canada.
I went there to go to a master's degree and
coaching studies in sports psychology. Never finished because they got
my first job back in the United States. But I
was at University of Victoria. That was my first assistant

(23:50):
coaching job. And then I went from there to be
a prep school coach in Maryland at a school where
I was I had actually played there as a postcrab myself.
And then I went from there to South Camp Prep
School in Connecticut. From there I.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
Went and just to pause you right there, I believe
you coached the Lon Wright's brother, didn't you at that
prep school?

Speaker 4 (24:08):
Yeah, droll right was the first player I had go
straight from high school to the NBA. He got drafted
number nineteen by the Miami Heat. And then the following
year I had Andre blotch. He went straight from high
school to the NBA, and I always tell everyone, I'm
the only coach in America who's ever done that. But
then they shut it. There was no way after the
two thousand and six straight to the NBA. I was

(24:29):
there and then we produced some really good teams and players,
and I went from there to Nike whereas the business
manager for Gradsroots Basketball. But essentially I was the head
of all of our talent evaluators. And I had a
bunch of consultants that worked for me for me around
the country and around the world, and I worked with
them to find some of the best players in the
country and around the world when I was there, and

(24:51):
I ran the Hoop Summit, the Jordan Camps, all that
stuff all over the place. I left Nike and went
the University of Washington and where I was REUNI, it
was coaching Isaiah Thomas, and we sent you know, so
many guys an NBA during that time, the little.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
Left handed Isaiah Thomas, not the slightly bigger right handed gay.

Speaker 4 (25:08):
Yeah, the little left handed one who thinks he's six' to.
Five and THEN i left, there went To villanova for a,
year came Back. WASHINGTON i left there and went To,
yukon and then From yukon went To East, carolina back
To South Camp Prep, school and then to The Memphis.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
Grizzlies there won't be a quiz on This utah. Hands
you need a road map and a full bio sheet
to know everywhere he's. Been but an experience like that
gives you a well rounded feel for basketball and probably
sets you up for what today is in college, basketball
because it isn't what it was when you got into this.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
Thing it's definitely not what it, was AND i think
what it sets you up. For people think the whole
setup now is all, transactional BUT i still believe it's
relational because you can't get to some people to work
with transactions if you don't know. People AND i think
my journey has given Me i'll tell you about my own,
book IS i can get to anyone just about AND

(26:02):
i think THAT i tripped that to my.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
Journey so of the stops where you, were where was
your most enjoyable stop along the.

Speaker 4 (26:09):
Way it's hard to, say because you enjoy everything. Right
every part of the journey makes you, better makes you,
grow and hopefully you have fun while you were, there
but OBVIOUSLY i was At washington the longest seven years.
Total AND i don't know if you know The lorenzo Or.
Romar he's one of the best people to be, around
and he's absolutely, funny and he was one of the

(26:30):
best managers of People i've ever been around with. Players
my time At villanova was, Great ukon was so, short
And East carolina was, short AND i would say my
time at the prep school level REALLY i enjoyed that
BECAUSE i loved being around the players every single day
and other aspects beside the, court you, know the classroom
or in the dining hall or in their, dorms like

(26:52):
it was like we were there together twenty four to,
seven it felt. Like BUT i really got to know
the player is much, better.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
So we know the journey. Now but as you, said
it's a relationship. Business, really life and business in general
is about. Relationships where do you And alex, Connect how
do you guys come? Together how does he? GO i
Want chill to be on my. Staff, well the first
time we met.

Speaker 4 (27:12):
WAS i think it was two, thousand it was maybe twenty,
twelve twenty, thirteen WHEN i was at The university Of.
Washington he was At Saint. Louis we had a player
Named Scott suggs who was From missouri and we would
always bring a junior or senior back to the hometown
before he graduated and we Played Saint louis.

Speaker 3 (27:28):
Now it was the first TIME i met him when
he's working With.

Speaker 4 (27:30):
Majaris and then after that we got involved with one
of our good friends Named Guy. Rancourt he's the coach
At Western Connecticut university In, connecticut and he does summer
trips with US Usa Basketball east and get college players
to go To europe and play Against european. Teams and
So alex AND i were coaching os together and we

(27:50):
got to know each other well over those.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
Summers SO i, mentioned you're the first guy on staff
here outside Of, alex and for a few weeks it was.
You Then wes came on board. Too but you were
doing a lot of the recruiting. Here you And alex
were on the phone a, lot and you're doing a
lot of the. Recruiting what's your sales? Pitch chill to
a recruit when you got a brand new staff and

(28:11):
there's no team that they're going to be a new
member of a new, team and things are turning. Over
what's the INITIAL i know everybody's going to be a
little bit, different but what's kind of the general sales
pitch to a kid to, say come here and play for,
us trust, me come here and play for.

Speaker 4 (28:25):
Us, well INITIALLY i did a bunch of research myself On,
utah so WHEN i got on the, PHONE i had
stuff to say About, Utah Salt Lake, City, utah the
history of this basketball, program the history of The Huntsman,
center with the Magic Johnson Larry berg. Game that's sort
of like an entree to get people warmed. Up and
then after that just simply talked about The alex and
at that time was myself AND i had a general

(28:47):
idea of the type of people he wanted to have one.
Staff but regardless of a kid is going to be
a juco Player division Three High Major division, one they
all want to be a pro at some. Level and
that's a big piece that we could sell to them,
that regardless of what may or may not be in place,
here yet we have the experience to a me from

(29:09):
the high school level all the way. Up if you
are good enough or you have the talent and you
want to work to show you the way to be a.
Pro and Then alex obviously is coming from the. Pros
and then no one Knows university Of utah better Than
alex and what he, did WHY i was. Here so
actually re Researched alex and really sold him on the.
Players but the big deal is that coming to The big.

(29:32):
Twelve it's a big thing, too, Right so we had
a bunch of ingredients to open the door and have
conversations with.

Speaker 2 (29:39):
People what's the most challenging part of roster construction? Today
because in the old, days it was high school and
junior college and you might get an occasional, transfer but
they'd have to sit out a, year maybe two if
it was within the same. Conference, today you can get
players from, everywhere high, school junior, college transfer, portal you
can get them From, europe you can get them from

(30:00):
THE G league now everywhere and. Anywhere so what's the
biggest Challenge because you've got more access to players than
you've ever had in putting a roster.

Speaker 4 (30:09):
TOGETHER i think the biggest challenge is sticking to your
non negotiables and the characteristics that a That alex first
of all wants in the, players and that we as
a staff, want and that's the character piece, first and
it's tough in the portal during the, time things that
moving so, fast that's hard for you to get a
great deal of background on. Players so that's the most challenging.

(30:31):
THING i say that if YOU'RE i think the portal
era has cause people to really evaluate players by what
they do in the court where some of the most
important pieces what type of person are? THEY i think
that's the most challenging. Piece but it's really fun to.
Me it's like you named all the possible places that
you can find a, player and guess what they can

(30:51):
find you. Now and the other, piece, obviously is the
financial piece is challenging because you have to be able
to put a roster together that makes sense and that
maybe not based solely on what the money. Is the
pieces have to fit and then the way we want to.
Play we know we're looking for virsatile players with the

(31:12):
characteristics that we like to play.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
Well any other. Challenges everybody's a free agent all the.

Speaker 4 (31:16):
Time everyone's a free, agent and that's WHY i think
you really have To you have to go on the
expectation that someone's gonna. Leave, well multiple people are gonna
leave your program every, year regardless of you're doing your,
work because there's people outside of the. University you may
be working with the player propositioning other people to have
that player next. Year so those are things you can't.
Control but the then you can control is are we

(31:39):
doing what we told the players we're going to do
when they were? Here are?

Speaker 3 (31:42):
There are we? Players?

Speaker 4 (31:43):
First are we taking into account every decision we? Make
is it about? Them and, then, lastly but most, importantly
do the players really really know that you're in it for.
Them if that's the, case you have a better chance
of kids wanting to stay in your, program regardless of
who's sam what on the.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
OUTSIDE i know it's early on in the, process But
i've talked to a lot of these. Guys i've sat
down with, them done one on ones with, him and
to a, man everybody was excited to be. Here you.
Know obviously you mentioned there's a lot of, pieces but
the things that are, here from the facility that we're
sitting in right, here to the support staff to the,
coaching a lot of these guys didn't have that at

(32:24):
the other places where they Were and that's a big
deal because you know this. Too every one of the
guys on this roster wants to play basketball on the next.

Speaker 4 (32:31):
Level, absolutely and that's one of THE i think the
Hitting gym's about The university Of. Utah we have so
much to, offer like this step out of this building
and this go behind this building up the. Hill.

Speaker 3 (32:43):
Today medical center. Yep one of the best in the, world.

Speaker 4 (32:46):
You, know AND i tell players when they come on
and visit in their, Families god forbid something happens to
your son on that court, there but you, know within
five minutes he's gonna be in the, hospital maybe in
the operating room because we're set up that way. Here
and then our practice, FACILITY i would say we're top,
five top ten in the. Country we have everything you
can imagine for a, player and then our mindset With

(33:07):
alix And west that we're going to provide our players
with everything that.

Speaker 3 (33:12):
Maybe you never had somewhere.

Speaker 4 (33:13):
Else you, know when they come, in they get, EKGs you,
know they get the whole medical. Thing we. Have the
nutritionist works with them every, day but it's just we
do it to a higher level than just we have a.
Nutritionist you, know we're all working together as a team
every single day to say how can we make build
the best player that he can be why he is?

Speaker 2 (33:33):
Here, well that's going to be a challenge because my
playing days are long. GONE i might set a screen
or shoot a free thrower.

Speaker 4 (33:39):
Two for, you but well we make it the best
screen in the country here.

Speaker 2 (33:43):
Those days of. Coaching i'm very, coachable but on the,
Floor i'm not going to give you much. Chiming all,
right three games. In what are your just big picture?
Impressions where you guys are as a program.

Speaker 4 (33:52):
We're, building you, KNOW i think that's going to be
probably a statement that we'll make all. Year we're, building
we're finding out more about our. Players the one of
the most promising things you've been in every game here
that we have a group that doesn't. Quit you, Know
there's been points in every game where it's, like, oh,
oh is it gonna get away from us here a little?

(34:12):
Bit and our guys, fight you, know and at the very,
end regardless of what the final record, is what the
results are in any particular, game is that we know
that we have a group of guys who're gonna. Fight
and that's really.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
Important you have lived everywhere in this. Country you just
outlined your journey, northwest to the, northeast to the south
and everywhere in. Between you've been here about six, months,
now how do you Like Salt?

Speaker 4 (34:35):
Lake you, know WHEN i was At washington and we're
in the pac twelve together and we always came. Here
always was very fun In Salt. Lake it, is you.
KNOW i wish it was daytime right now because you
look out the window and if people Saw some DAYS
i walk to, work you, know and my. WALK i
don't think there's a better walk in the.

Speaker 2 (34:51):
Country i've lived. Here i've lived a lot of places,
too But i've lived here twenty four, years AND i
tell people all the time it's a beautiful place to.
Live also an easy place to. Live even though this
city's gotten a lot bigger you've been here over the,
years it's, bigger it's still a great place to.

Speaker 4 (35:05):
Be it's very. EASY i, MEAN i probably figured the
city out WHEN i was here by, myself taking guys
to official visits and that type of. STUFF i figured
the city out in like five. Minutes but to, me
it's it's like where you. Work it's not about the
bricks in the morning's about the. People not that there's
great people, here both on and off.

Speaker 2 (35:23):
CAMPUS i agree with. You this has been. Fun next,
TIME i Think alex AND i talked, about we're gonna
do like an eight late eighties through the nineties basketball
segment every.

Speaker 3 (35:32):
Week i'm.

Speaker 2 (35:33):
In i'm in, too Because Big monday was my favorite
WHEN i was in high school in, college AND i
used to joke my good friend AND i, know you
know In Gordi, chiesa who was a jazz code absolutely
forever In gordy's In Northeast Guy Manhattan, college the whole. Thing, Franficeela,
Yeah franny, too but We gordy AND i just used
to chop it. Up he'd be on my radio show
and Those Big east games in the, eighties those WERE nba. Games,

(35:55):
absolutely those were in he used to. GET i, mean
he was on. That how about that, staff by the,
way he was On, Patino Herb, Sendek Gordy, Chiasa Jeff Van,
gundy And Stu.

Speaker 3 (36:07):
Jackson, yeah, unbelievable that that.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
Staff.

Speaker 3 (36:10):
UNBELIEVABLE i, MEAN i, MEAN i Mean hall Of.

Speaker 4 (36:12):
Famous yeah, Right.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
It's kind of like that staff that a poor man's
version was that staff Of jari's had over At Saint
louis when he was there With alex And, Porter, Moser
paul Being, cardi those. Guys, yep pretty good.

Speaker 4 (36:22):
Staff, yeah and for me that, time you, know during
The Big, EAST i MEAN i grew up twenty five
minutes From, georgetown and SO i got to see all
those teams come in AND i just feel like whoa
And maryland was really good and THE acc was. GOOD i,
Mean i'm. Older i'm the oldest person on, staff which
is crazy in my.

Speaker 2 (36:39):
Mind so welcome to the. Club.

Speaker 4 (36:41):
Yep so we can. Talk we can talk, eighties ninety,
seventies whatever basketball you.

Speaker 2 (36:44):
WANT i love talking to my Friend Thrill bailey about
those days when THOSE nc state teams when he would
be would be Battling duke In carolina And wake And Virginia.

Speaker 4 (36:53):
Thorough, Bailey Bladensburg High, School High, School washington D, C Upper,
Marlborough maryland Believed. Bladensburg didn't he finish?

Speaker 2 (36:59):
Though did he finish?

Speaker 3 (37:00):
It?

Speaker 2 (37:02):
Okay not too far from, you, right.

Speaker 4 (37:04):
Yep not too far from me. Though, Okay, Yeah i'm
like a Basketball it's like THE pdia me.

Speaker 2 (37:07):
Too we'll have some fun on road trips this year
talking about awesome all, Right Thanks, Chill Thanks, Bill Raphael

You were listening To Running Utes, basketball brought to you
By America First Credit union ON espn seven hundred and
The Ute Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
Network Night's Coach The, show sponsored By smith is brought
to you By America, first proud to be the official
Credit union of you of you. Athletics whether you're looking
for better ways to get the cash you need manage
your money or grow your. Business America first is ready
with the assist Join America first dot. Com. Uh he told,
me when was the first time you remember Meeting Raphael

(38:18):
chilias you, know the first.

Speaker 3 (38:20):
Time was because we coached H Se how many years?
Ago is it four or five years? Ago we COACHED
U we coached together with another friend of ours who
coaches At Western connecticut would take a college team every
year in the summer and, uh yeah, no and everybody
else was jet, lagged and you, Know chills a great
conversation and we started talking and stayed in. Touch we

(38:43):
did that for a couple of. Summers but you, know
like the basketball world is like there's thousands of connections
through the, game right of mutual, friends and you know
this guy and that. Guy but, yeah, No chills one
of the.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
Best he mentioned, that but he said he went way
back to Your Saint louis days when he came in
With washington to play you guys In Saint louis because
they had A missouri kid on their roster and they
wanted to get him a home.

Speaker 3 (39:04):
Game, yep That scott. Sucks, yeah AND i think we
did win that game. Too, no but you, know but, Chill,
yeah he's like you, said he's been, Everywhere, Washington, Villanova
connecticut and uh, yeah, no, YEAH i remember the, game
don't necessarily remember. Him we were probably trying to survive
at the. Time but, yeah.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
It's FUNNY i asked him this. Question i'll ask you,
too the challenge of putting a roster together today in college.
Basketball there's never been more, options but you also have
to figure out how to get guys, here and there's
so many other herd it because in the old, days
when you were, playing you're a high school player or
a junior college, player, yep and maybe occasionally there'd be a,

(39:44):
transfer but you'd had to sit out a year or
two if you transferred within your. Conference. Yep but now
you've Got, europe you've GOT, jc you've got the transfer,
portal you've got high, school and now you've got THE
G league. Too so there's never been more. Options BUT
i bet it's never been a bigger challenge to put
a roster together even with all those.

Speaker 3 (40:03):
Options oh, YEAH i mean the different pool of, players
it's it's it's uh, yeah it's, crazy and you know it's.
Funny in, AGAIN i don't understand all of, it but you,
know one kid will have three, years one kid will
have one year. Remaining AND i DON'T i don't know
the formula that goes into, that nor NOR I i
think or AM i smart enough to try to figure it,
Out but, YEAH i know it's uh, hopefully hopefully the

(40:25):
gray area will will shrink as we go. On but,
yeah the pool, PLAYERS i, mean the europe THINK i
think's exploded now because of the money in college game
and a lot of those kids can make more than
they can In. Europe and, uh you, know but the
one THING i think that the longer we do, this
we keep talking about is, that you, know the kid
has to want to be. Here. Yep like that's a
huge thing BECAUSE i you, KNOW i say that because

(40:46):
my you, Know, chill for, instance he had a, job
he had a really good. Job he has a job
everybody wants at, uh you, know his age and most
everybody on my staff had a good, job which is
not always the case in our line of. Work but,
uh AND i think that falls on the, Players like
the players have to want to be, here you. Know
obviously you have to make it work with with everything.

(41:07):
Else but first and foremost they have to want to
be here and then see themselves being.

Speaker 2 (41:11):
Here two other players quick thoughts on from, you and
then we'll take our last segment and talk about the
Game saturday Against Sam Houston Counta. DAWES i haven't talked
About katie at, all but he's been steady and consistent
in all three games for. You and he's, right he's
basically a walking double double every. Night he had the
double double Against. Weaver he just missed the double double

(41:32):
the other night by one. Rebound but he just seems
to give you what you. Need and the funny thing
is he's only taking eight, shots but he's. There he's
active on the, glass he, attacks he just he's really
what you. Need he's an athletic guy that could play
a couple of, positions but he rebounds it really. Well.

Speaker 3 (41:49):
Yeah, No and and he's one of the you, know
AND i told him again, today like you would like
him to be more, aggressive you, know it's not his
nature a. Personality and he's one of the GUYS i
was talking to about you, know should probably start the
game upset and mad and ready to. Go but, he you,
know like the second half of The weber, game put
a great job on the, boards AND i think he
kind of did that throughout the game Against Totly. Cross but,

(42:10):
no But, keanu uh you, know he's not close to
the potential he could. Have AND i think he's such
a nice kid that you, KNOW i think you gotta
change that personality when you step on the. Court but uh,
know he's been. Great and like you, said the great
word to use was, steady just very. Steady and you
can count on.

Speaker 2 (42:29):
Him, yeah you look up at the end of the
game and he's got a double, Double you're, like where
did they come? FROM i, didn't you, know because he
doesn't do it in. Spurts but he's just he's chipping
away the whole. Game he's rebounding the best for you right.
Now but you're gonna get a, real uh a real
boost to the Lineup. Saturday James conkwo is gonna return
to your. Lineup and the one thing That james has
done everywhere he's gone at a pretty high level is
rebound the. Basketball, yeah Rebound james fifth year senior older

(42:51):
had a few other stops he's he's been, before AND i, think,
uh you, know add some, size another big, body some,
physicality AND i think hoping for is like that kind
of like on a team lift everybody else's uh physicality
and confidence and, no it just gives us another another
option to go, to which is always nice as a.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
Coach so, yeah it'll be interesting to, see you. Know
now we get to go through that like who plays well,
together Can? James who plays best With? James who is you?
Know and and we'll have that the versatility depending on
the team we play, against two different different lineups.

Speaker 2 (43:28):
And james is for those of you that haven't seen,
him he's a pretty big body, too so he can
get in there and mix it up a little, bit
a little. Bit Like, katie does he have Again i've
only seen. Clips does he have the bounce THE kd
does or not quite the? Bounce not many guys have
the bounce kat? Does, Yeah, No, katie you know you
know what you know he? Has Uh, no he actually
more than you'd think watching his. GAMES i, mean like
he's he is he is, vertical but he's not afraid of,

(43:51):
contact you, know almost too. Much so, yeah you got
to keep him out of foul. Trouble but he uh,
no he's very he's very uh you, know. Good you, Know.

Speaker 3 (44:00):
Majeriso as you, say the games won't below the. Rim
and he's very good right, there you, know physicality before
you get to the vertical part of. It but, no,
no he is he's. Not he is, good but he's
a He's a'm trying to. Think the word he used
at Media day In big twelve was. Enforcer So i'm
gonna hold him to.

Speaker 2 (44:18):
It you need one of those guys. Too you gotta
have one of those. Guys final time out. Here The
Coaches show will come Back saturday. Night It's Sam Houston.
State don't be fooled by the name or the. Conference
this is a good basketball. Team we'll tell you about
them coming back on the other, side The. Bearcats when
we continue on The Coaches show FROM espn seven hundred
and you Had Sports Radio network all, right final segment

(44:42):
With alex tonight on The Coaches. Show it's gonna be
with you. Guys we'll do it Next tuesday, night will
be our Football Coaches, show then into the basketball Were
LIKE i, said we're all. Over we'll have Another Coaches
show coming up next week as. Well the show brought
to you By smith your opponent On saturday, Night Sam
Hugh Houston. State probably not a household. Name probably not

(45:03):
a lot of people out there that are breaking down
beercat tape like you guys. Do they're one and one
on the. Year they beat somebody by the name Of,
LITTORNO i don't know who that is in their, opener
and they lose To Texas tech In lubbock in their second.
Game but ninety eight seventy. Seven BUT i watched some.
Clips talk To Sean mooney who watches all the, clips

(45:23):
and then talk to you the other. Night after the.
Game you guys both said this is a team that
is good and athletic and physical and they're gonna be
a handful On.

Speaker 3 (45:31):
Saturday oh, Yeah and like you, said they just they
just Played Texas, tech who's going to be one of
the better teams in our, league who's big and, physical
and they they hung with them for a while and they,
had you, know reeversizing the. Rebounding they had over twenty
rebounds Against Texas. Tech like in, there and we showed
our guys a little bit. Today but they're. Guys they
they're aggressive and they, attack and it's not going to

(45:56):
be a game where we can come out and you,
know find our rhythm and then get going. Again like
they're gonna be crashing and, attacking and they're well coached
and they play.

Speaker 2 (46:05):
Hard what kind of a test is this for you? Guys?
Then obviously you just outlined what they. Do what's the
challenge for you? Guys ain't coming up On? Saturday you,
KNOW i think it's more of the.

Speaker 3 (46:12):
SAME i think it's it's it's kind of like the same,
theme you, know just the physicality and the defense and the.
REBOUNDING i know it kind of gets monotonous saying, it
but now now IT'S i, think, uh just watching, THEM
i think they'll probably, it being so far the best
team we.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
Played, yeah and certainly the most physical team you've played so.

Speaker 3 (46:30):
Far, yeah, yep, yep physical athletic and LIKE i, said
they're gonna they're gonna, run they're gonna, crash and they're
gonna keep.

Speaker 2 (46:35):
Coming, well that's what you need because you're gonna see
that coming up in the coming weeks down at THE
mte later in the non. Conference but that's a team
you're gonna see every, night musical athletic getting after you
in The big.

Speaker 3 (46:46):
Twelve, yeah, no, no it's a great precursor to The Big,
twelve BECAUSE i mean that was my you, KNOW i
don't think a lot of our guys have a lot
of experience in The Big. Twelve that's WHY i told
them Because Texas tech is a good, team great team
that's picked to do a lot of things this, year
and they hung with them and they gave up twenty
offensive rebounds to. Them SO i think hopefully that was

(47:06):
a good a good warning warning for our. Guys.

Speaker 2 (47:10):
Dah you can tell you, know you know. This you've coached.
Enough you can tell kids and players a lot of,
things but sometimes they have to experience. It, yeah and
they'll they'll experience it in, conference but they'll also experience
it On. Saturday james is a good. Example call On
james all, Day, james you played in this. League what's
what's coming? Up And james will tell, them.

Speaker 3 (47:27):
Yeah, no. Exactly that's a good nice thing about Having
James and, yeah you can tell them and you can
show them and then tell them again and show. Them
but like a lot OF i, mean THAT'S i think
a lot of programs will say that you want to,
have you, know experience in the older the. Better it's
the same thing at any any level where you're in
THE nba or. College but, yeah hopefully you know through
the three games that we kind of get get that

(47:49):
a little bit now and we don't have, to you,
know fight.

Speaker 2 (47:52):
Back That's saturday night at The Huntsman. Center the women
will play it, too the men play at six and
you can hear that game on our our sister, Station
HANK fm one oh one point, five because you'll hear
me on these airwaves Calling Utah baylor football On saturday In.
Waco good Luck saturday nexs. Week, yeah thank you, There

(48:12):

well To Raphael chilius for coming in and telling some
stories with. Us alonzo engineered, It porter produced. It I'm
Bill riley saying so long and good. Night enjoy. It

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
