We got some really interesting hot headlines today. Do we
have our hot headlines a little open? I kind of
want to get fired up about hot headlines today? What's
(01:38):
the opposite of cold? And if you know that, you
also know Scott Mitchell doesn't want to give you old
cold headlines.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
No way, Hodad Scott hash sports headlines that will have
you say, let's get to the hot headlines. On the
down in Dirty on ESPN seven hundred ninety two, one am.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
All right, are you smoking hot? Or you just hot? Hot? Hot? Hot?
You know that was actually a word you had to
yell a like if you had a pass protection and
that you're basically trying to get a wide receiver out
who potentially should be a blocker like a running back
or an EH back or something like that. And if
they brought the mic in the sam it was hot hot,
(02:21):
hot hot, and everyone had to yell the hot. So
everyone read it, saw it and reacted to it. Anyways,
that's what we're doing today. We're going to red react
and see it because these are the hot headlines. One
of the hot headlines today, of course, is the college
football ranking came out again second one of the college
(02:42):
football playoff portion of your football season in college some
interesting things, some not so interesting things. I think the
biggest move in the top twelve was, of course Texas
Tech jumping all the way up in the ranking. I
believe to uh, I think they're five, aren't they five?
Or six in the in the country there's six or yeah? Anyways, yeah,
(03:10):
this is this is this is quite a quite an
interesting UH poll from the standpoint of b YU uh
b YU kind of fell off a cliff and and
I think a lot of people were, you know, they
do they do these like metrics about strength and really
(03:31):
like how good really is a team? Like? And they
it's all data, right, it's all it's all some kind
of formula they put together based on this and that
and everything else and whatever. And they've come up with
this UH and and in Utah ranks very high in
this UH and BYU does not. So I just have
(03:54):
to wonder if if that's not h some indicator of
course from the fall. But it's it's significant, okay, And
there's something significant we haven't really talked a lot about.
But it's there, and it's it's it's it's it's slightly concerning,
(04:16):
and it's slightly concerning for this reason. There are two teams.
So you have the twelve teams right now, and they're
just ranked right because we don't know who's gonna win
conference championships, and there are five conference teams champions. The
top five ranked conference champions get in anywhere. Okay, so
(04:41):
they're assuming that it's the power for and one more,
the problem is is the best teams in the ACC
are garbage. They're not even in the top they're fifteen.
Is the highest any team in the ACC is in
(05:03):
and that's Miami. And so there's there's and and so
if Miami doesn't even and they may not get to
their conference title game like Miami, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Louisville,
Pittsburgh are all there are four teams and the highest
one is Miami, and one team from the ACC will
(05:26):
get there and it's the one who wins that maybe
because they could fall below some other schools like the
American which is South Florida is at twenty four, and
which is crazy to me if you ask my opinion,
because you know that that's the twenty fourth ranked team
(05:49):
in the country. And you're gonna tell me it's better
than all of those other schools that are like ranked eleven,
really twelve through twenty twenty three. They can't you tell
me South Florida is better than BYU, Utah, Vanderbilt, Miami, Georgia, Tech, USC, Michigan.
(06:14):
And you look at some of these schools. You look
at Miami took jump three spots, Michigan jumped three spots.
USC jumped two spots, and USC plays Oregon and Oregon's
inn that large team right now. You know, if USC
beat Oregon, you might see USC jump, you might see
(06:35):
Oregon go out of the pole, or you might see
Utah get bumped down and then Oregon and Michigan or
I'm sorry, USC move up. There's the potential of that.
But the good part for Utah right now is that
they're at thirteen. The bad thing for BYU is they're
(06:58):
at twelve. Now, you've got to get to ten if
you're gonna get in that large bid. So if you're BYU,
you're Utah, you got to get to ten. And right now,
by us A twelve, Utah is at thirteen. So who's
gonna lose? Texas Oklahoma are gonna lose, and that puts
(07:26):
Utah they move up, They move up eleven spots, and
but so does BYU. Now what if BYU loses to Cincinnati, Dude,
I would think, I mean, b BYU just tumbled, they went,
they dropped five spots. So if BYU loses to like,
(07:49):
it's it's. My point is is that Utah has got
to get to at least ten. But you really want
to be eight, you know, if you can get to eight,
because ten might put you playing Notre Dame at Notre Dame,
I mean, I mean, that's an amazing atmosphere for a
(08:10):
first round game, but it's scary. And I know we
did a poll a while back and a lot of
people go, man, we just got to get the college college.
We got to get to the conference championship game and
win it. And doing that would put two teams, at
least two teams in the Big twelve Championship. It might
(08:32):
and it might put you know, it might put BYU
there as well. But if BYU wins out, they're going
to play Texas Tech, and and if they lost to
Texas Tech, it could bump Utah out. So it's a
very precarious situation simply because you're going to have Ohio State.
(08:55):
Let's just say Ohio State is the conference champion therein
you know, I guess it's gonna be Texas A and
M because that really, I mean, it doesn't totally throw
everything off. But let's say Texas A and M plays Alabama,
and Texas A and M loses, you know, they're not
gonna drop out of the top twelve. They're not gonna
(09:16):
They're not Utah's not gonna jump past them. Now if
Alabama loses and they have two loss, I mean, they're
still going to be in. It's gonna be an uphill
battle simply because Utah doesn't play anyone that's very good
the rest of the year. Kansas, Kansas State, UH, Baylor,
like those aren't gonna be significant wins going down stir
(09:37):
So it's it's a it's a little bit more precarious
than I sought, But I still have hope. Notre Dame
goes to pitt they would be three losses. They drop.
Texas loses, they've got Alabama and someone else. I think
Texas A and M they're gonna lose, They're gonna drop.
Oklahoma has Georgia they're gonna drop, So there's potential. Sorry
(10:02):
about Notre Dame by the way, Martin, I know that
hurts you few Notre Dame, you know, so you could
get to you could get to ten. Uh, you could
get in and ten is safe. Ten gets you in.
And I really think it's how Utah just looks the
rest of the year. You know, they if it's if
(10:23):
it's forty five points, then they handle their business against
all three of these remaining They can't. They can't win
twenty four to twenty one. It will not look good
in the polls. It won't be like yeah, you won, No,
you gotta win. You just have to dominate. Like it
has to look like Colorado, it has to look like
West Virginia, it has to look like Cincinnati every week.
(10:49):
There was another metric that came out that I thought
was really fascinating. So Texas Tech is is uh is
the top rated team in the country and stops me
getting off the field, actually stopping offenses, whether it's on doubts, punt,
or turnover and you know, like fourth down, they just
(11:12):
they got it or they punted or they got a turnover.
And of course Texas Tech is the number one team
in the country. What was quite fascinating is Utah's five
in the whole country. And it's a it's an important stat,
but it's it's it tells a lot about a defense.
And I think it's one of the things this Utah
(11:36):
defense is. You know, you look at the game against
against by U and and the defense played actually pretty well.
I mean, I know there's some moments where you go,
how could you just let that guy go? And they
got into some just really unfortunate. The hit on Blackmeyer
(11:59):
was very unfortun and it would have been like had
he just run, it would have been tackled, but you
just underhand through it to nobody. And now it's a
and now it's a targeting penalty and the guy could
you know, Lander Barton gets kicked out. So I mean
there's a you know, the point is this, this Utah
(12:19):
defense is actually pretty good, and the offense is getting
more and more explosive as it goes on and more
kind of in sync and more in rhythm. But it
can't just be it can't be a win. You can't
do that or you're done. Now, what's the likelihood of
getting three teams in the conference championship or the playoffs
(12:46):
from the Big Twelve. The biggest possibility is BYU beating
Texas Tech in the championship game and having Notre Dame
Texas and Oklahoma you lose. That's probably that's a real
possibility for the for the team, and and the reason
(13:06):
is because those games against Texas Tech b YU. Now
now the easiest in the obvious way is just win,
win and get in the conference championship. But that that's
gonna require a lot, a lot of math. It's gonna
require BYU losing, Cincinnati losing well, No, Cincinnati has two
losses and Utah beat them, but they don't have two
(13:27):
conference losses. So it's it's uh, it's it's kind of
I think Cincinnati uh uh b YU beating Iowa State
that was a tough one. Uh Cincinnati, does Cincinnati has
b YU. I mean they don't. Beyond that, they don't.
(13:49):
They don't have a lot going on. So the Cincinnati
BYU game is for all the marbles, if you ask me,
I mean, because I guess if BYU lost, they might
drop behind Utah. But if they don't and they stay
ahead of Utah even though they lose to Cincinnati. It
(14:12):
very easily could bump Utah out of the playoffs. I
hope you're following me on this because it's quite There's
just a lot of different scenarios and there's just we're close.
We're really close, probably the closest we've ever been. I
(14:33):
don't think it will be the last time, because I
know I've talked on the show about a twenty fourteen
playoff and that one guarantees four teams in your conference.
It's like, if you can't be one of the top
four teams in your freaking conference, then go home. You
don't deserve to be Just stop playing football if you
ask my opinion about them. Okay, moving on, this was
(14:58):
this to me. I was perusing college football or CBS
Sports and they have the rankings of the top the
top fifty quarterbacks in the country college football quarterbacks, and
let me tell you where where your big twelve quarterbacks
(15:24):
are sitting. And when I read this, I was shocked,
and I think, like there's part of this like, oh, okay, fine, whatever,
I don't care. Yukon's quarterback. Yukon like the hot bed
of football that is Yukon. The number one rated quarterback
the power ranking quarterback I should say, is drum roll
(15:48):
please Joe fag Nano. Joe fag Nano from Yukon, Okay.
He's the first quarterback in twenty five years to each
twenty five touchdown passes without an interception. And he and
he beat he beat Duke who may play for the
(16:08):
a SEC championship. Of course, he was from Maine and
he's throwing for over two hundred fifty yards and three
touchdown passes are more with no interceptions in five straight games.
So he's so he's extreme extremely efficient, of course. Julian
(16:30):
Saying in at Ohio State, Haines King at Georgia Tech.
These are all teams that are doing very well in
the country. Fernando Mendoza, Indiana. Now like I like Mendoz
a lot Ty Simpson at Alabama. Are are you all
ready for this? So there's your top five. Number six.
Number six is none other than Jake Rhetz laugh and
(16:54):
and and and here's the thing. Jake Rhetz laugh wasn't
even ranked like they ranked this every week. I don't
know why I haven't seen this yet, but yeah, Jake
Rhetz laugh. Imagine where b where do you think BYU
would be today if Jake Rhetts laugh wasn't might might
have made a difference, might have made a difference with
(17:16):
this team. Let's see going down the list here a
little bit, because so so far no Big ten teams
or no Big twelve teams. Okay, you got a lot
of acc schools, which is interesting because they kind of stink.
(17:39):
You got some you know, you got some guys kind
of down the list here. Still no still no c J. Carr.
By the way, Martin is sixteen. Jaden Mauiava from USC
is seventeen. Arch Manny from Texas. He's number eighteen. Now
(18:01):
do you think that was by design because he's been
eighteen you know, eighteen Eli or not Elai, but Peyton
Manning's number. Okay, you're ready for this, folks. The number
nineteenth quarterback in in the country power ranking wise is
Bear Bachmeyer. Wow, he's the highest rated, highest power ranked
(18:25):
quarterback in the Big twelve.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Bear tim Tebow Bachmeyer is number nineteen.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Bear Tibo Bachmeyer and last week he was nine.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
He got knocked down ten spots.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Huh, that's insane. Now, number twenty is Sawyer Robinson, who
has been phenomenal all year. I just I find that
just beyond fascinating. So you have a run. You have
nineteen twenty are your Big twelve three? Noah Fafita at Arizona,
(19:03):
he moved up ten spots. Baron Morton is twenty five
and Brendan Soresby is twenty eight and he was twenty eight.
Brendan Soarsby, I think is the best quarterback in the
Big twelve, Like just like the guy that just gets
kind of you know, moves moves the needle for me.
(19:26):
Thirty is Jayleen Daniels from Kansas. Thirty one is Connor
Wigman from Houston. We still haven't even got to a
Utah quarterback. I was about to ask, where's the counterpart
Ford Sawyer this weekend? Avery Johnson from Kansas State is
thirty two and number thirty four is Devin Dampierre.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
Now I'll take Devin Dampierre over Avery Johnson, Connor Wigman,
Jaylen Daniels, I'll take him over Brendan Soresby. Baron Morton
is just yeah, I'd like Noah Fafitah Sawyer. Robinson is
not bad, you know, bart could be a good player
down the road.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
But wow, So they think there's about I.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Think I think they should I think they should paste
this on Devin Dan Pierce Locker. So they say they're
all ahead of you.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Yeah, they think there's fifteen other better quarterbacks than Devon
Dan Peer, including six other Big twelve quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Now, now Josh Hoover for TCU is number thirty eight,
so he's below below below Devon, So at least he's
(20:48):
not the last one, but he's not very well thought
of on this power ranking thing. Now, are you ready
for another drum roll? Yes, because we had we had
Jake Rhetz laugh up there, number forty, Bryce and Barnes
Utah State, really, former pig farming walk On at Utah
(21:11):
is the fortieth ranked Power whatever ranking quarterback in college
football right now, if you, if you had.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
A guest, Scott, what do you think they add into
all these rankings like QBR status, touchdown.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Yeah, it's touchdowns, it's yards, it's yards to interceptions, it's
it's all, it's all kinds of things. It's it's a
formula like it's not a it's not a subjective thing
like it's it's literally you know. So it has a clarification, right,
(21:46):
It says These rankings are not a Heisman forecast, draft projection,
or season long outlook. They're a real time evaluation of performance,
factoring in competition, pressure, and production. So wow, anyways, there
you have it. I find that just absolutely insanely fascinating.
(22:12):
All right, let's go take a break. We come back,
we have our NFL News of Notes. Yeah, there's some
fun discussion to talk here about what's going on with
the coaches, players, moving on, staying whatever. This is the
down of dirty Scott Mitchell, ESPN seven ninety two. Just
to get all that stuff out of the way, because
we're obligated by the way to say those kinds of things.
(22:35):
This we're not. We're not obligated to say it. I
say this of my own free will and choice, Like
I wake up and I go, this is what I'm
going to talk about today. Now we took a break, okay,
cause you know, you take a break, you have to
go to the bathroom. Please do not go to the
bathroom while you're in your car, though, although I'm sure
some of you have, if I'm being completely candid, so
(23:00):
have I. When you gotta go, you gotta go, And
there's just sometimes now you don't necessarily have to go
like you know, right there you's and never go while
you're driving, please pull over. I had an incident one
time when I was playing with the h the Baltimore Ravens,
(23:21):
and a guy named Tony Sarahgusa may he Rest in
peace was one of my teammates and a guy that,
ironically enough, I hung out with. Now. Tony liked to
hang out with me because I didn't drink and so
I was a good driver. And by the way, if
you if you ever want to have the most incredible
experience of your life, just spend an evening with Tony Sarahgusa.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
It is.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
It is just absolutely hilarious and comical. Or a day,
it doesn't have to be a night. So Tony said, hey,
let's go to the Let's go to the Annapolis Boat Show.
And it's a big boat show. And of course Annapolis
is on the water in the Chesapeake Bay, and it's
a and it's it's it's world famous, and so it's
our day often. So we drive to the to the
(24:05):
Annapolis boat Show. Now, Annapolis, Maryland basically was laid out
before they even remotely thought about cars. And not only that,
there's a lot of water, and it's windy and the
roads are small. We got caught in a rush hour
(24:25):
traffic in downtown Annapolis after leaving the boat show, and
Tony Sarah goes, it has to go to the bathroom.
And he goes, I gotta go. And we're sitting in
this line and we're not going anywhere. There's cars in
front of us, behind us, the lanes on the oppite,
like no, we're just sitting there. And he goes, he goes,
(24:47):
I just I have to go, and he goes and
so and he's driving. I'm in the passenger side, and
he goes, I'm gonna go right over there, and he
points to these brownstones. If you know what a brownstone is,
it's like a rectangular building. And they put a bunch
of them. They're rowhouses they put up, but they call
(25:08):
them brownstones or rowhouses. And they put them in a
line and they're all over back east and there's a
there's a small space between two buildings and they're they're
they're like condominium type type buildings, very popular. He goes,
I'll just I'll just go between the two brownstones. So
(25:31):
he gets out of the car again right in the
middle of rush hour traffic, crosses a couple of lanes
of traffic, goes to the Brownstone, and I'm laughing. I go,
I go, well, if the traffic starts moving, we're not well.
I'll just wait for him to come back. So he
comes back and he and I go, did everything work
(25:52):
out okay? He's like no, He goes, I couldn't fit
between the brownstones, Like he was so big that he
couldn't slide between into two buildings to go to the bathroom.
And he and he goes, I can't hold it any longer.
So he just kind of opens the door and in
the middle of the road, in front of everyone who
was there, he proceeds to go to the bathroom. And
(26:16):
I don't know that I've ever laughed any harder in
my entire life, because like he goes, I gotta go. Now,
going to the bathroom in the NFL is quite an
It's not quite like that. And I think Tony Sarah
Goose is probably the only person alive that would probably
do that. But man, was it funny. And and and
(26:38):
you know, he kind of tried to conceal himself, like
you know where he's got the door kind of shielding
and no one was moving, I mean cars just all
around us, and it was just it was comical. Oh
my goodness, it was so comical. I talked about this.
This is this is the stuff people don't talk about,
but it's it's a real thing. Going to the bathroom
(27:01):
is it is a is a challenge, and I don't
know how it is for people out there listening. When
you go to work, so you you you go to
work in your for for player, your office is a
locker room, right, so you go in this big room
and everyone has their little cubicle and they go up
to their cube cubicle and typically you just you you
(27:23):
get undressed and then you get into like workout clothes
or sweats or something, and and you're pretty much in
that all day long because you have walkthroughs, you have practice,
you have you know, so it's it's it's just you
don't No one goes to work in the NFL and
doesn't get dressed in something you don't go in in
(27:44):
your meetings in like your street clothes. That would all
that would just even almost appear weird. And maybe the
players do it today, I don't know anyway, So you go,
so imagine going to work and you just all get
dressed in your little work clothes and then you go
to your meetings. Well, you have to go to the
bathroom at some time during the day, and they have
(28:07):
a locker room with a shower and with bathroom stalls.
And in my entire career in the NFL, I was never, ever, ever,
ever going to go into one of those stalls in
the locker room to go to the bathroom. Now, all
of the facilities had other locations where they had bathrooms.
(28:28):
There were two teams I played for.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
That there.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
The practice facility was in the stadium, so the Detroit
Lions and the Cincinnati Bengals, and I scouted out and
I found my secret private bathroom. And I never told
a soul that I went there, but I did, and
no one ever used my bathroom. Was I was not
(28:55):
going to go into one of those bathrooms where all
those other nasty football player There's just no way, absolutely
zero AA. Now there was another thing that you did
that you wanted to make sure that this was an essential,
(29:16):
and that is you had shower shoes. Now, shower shoes
are foot plops, okay, And under no circumstances did you
ever ever walk in that bathroom or that shower with
your bare feet touching the ground. No, and you had
to have your shower shoes on. Now, there were some
guys that were so disgusting, and I know some Hall
(29:36):
of I've heard, I've heard stories about Hall of Fame
baseball players who have done like, like, you got to
be careful that no one stands near you because it's
dangerous from someone going to the bathroom while they're in
the shower. And that's part of because you don't know
what you just don't know. So it showering is a
(29:59):
is a that's your own risk kind of thing, not
from like it not like some thing against the law
or something like that. But but guys will go to
the bathroom near or on you if you're not careful.
And that's the disgusting part that sit down and journey.
We got to talk about it at some point. And again,
(30:19):
not a lot of times people talk about this, but
those things do happen. Now, there was a guy once
and for the life of me, and I didn't understand
so and it may be this way in the NFL now,
I don't know. There was a guy he was an
offensive lineman and he would not shower, and everyone showered
(30:44):
like you just like it wasn't you showered and it
was fine, you know, it was safe to go in there,
but don't go without your shower shoes and just watch
out for certain people and don't shower next to him.
But it was common, like no one thought about it,
and this guy would not shower. Now you go to
practice and you have meetings after practice, and so it's
(31:08):
like no one and you sit in their small rooms
so you know, think of offensive line. There's about ten
maybe twelve depending on the practice squad, and it's not
a big meeting room. And so you're not going to
go in the meeting room and not shower and stink
because it would be horrible. And this guy would not shower.
And for the life of me, I didn't understand it.
(31:28):
And they finally like they showered this guy if he wasn't,
like they took it upon themselves to make sure he showered.
Now I went back to high school football and coached,
and none of the players showered after practice, and I
don't understand why they didn't that they were like, there's
(31:50):
no way with phones, with social media, with no so
the players just they put their pads in their lockers
or on top of them whatever, and they just they
went home and they showered at home. And and growing
up it was like you shower and different culture. So
(32:11):
in the NFL, you know, it's been a few years,
maybe they maybe they don't shower now. Maybe maybe this
this whole thing has changed now. There were stadiums, and
I talked about this briefly that so you go to
for a game and my my routine. And I wasn't
alone in this. There were other players that had this
(32:32):
and most most players have a routine that they follow
and what have you. And so the the game is
the first thing you do officially on game days, you
have to go to the pregame meal, and in if
you have a one o'clock game, pregame meal is at nine,
so it's always four hours before the game starts. So
(32:54):
if you have a four o'clock game, it's going to
be at noon. Uh, And so at nine o'clock it's breakfast.
At four o'clock game, it's lunch. And a night game,
it's kind of dinner because you know, a lot of
night games would be at nine o'clock at night. If
you're on the East coast, you know, if it was
like a Monday night game or whatever, or even Sunday
(33:16):
night was like that too, And so then you had
a five So it's dinner, so it's breakfast lunch for dinner.
You had to go to it. You didn't have to
eat the food. And then there was four There were
four buses that went. There was a bus that left
right after the pregame meal. There was a bus that
left a half an hour after the pregame meal, and
(33:37):
then there was a bus. Then the last two buses
left so they would get everyone to the stadium with
two hours to go before the game started. So that
was the cutoff. You had to be in the locker
room no later than two hours before the game kicked off. Now,
I like to go early because I didn't want to
(33:59):
sit and hang out at a hotel. I didn't want
to I wanted to get up and I wanted to move.
I wanted to get my body going. I wanted to
go to the stadium. I wanted to find the conditions.
I wanted to feel everything. Now today the stadiums are
cushy and nice and pampered and spoiled. In the back
(34:22):
in the day, they weren't. And there's some stadiums and
I know this was done on purpose. I mean at
the University of Utah they do it on purpose. They
make you very uncomfortable in the visiting locker room. Like
if you go to Rice Eckel Stadium, it is the
taj Mahal for the home team, it is wonderful, beautiful, amazing,
(34:43):
and you go to the visitors' locker room and you
feel like you're in the old South end zone of
Rice Heckel Stadium where the locker room was just super tiny,
I mean massively tiny and you could hardly stand it.
In fact, a lot of times the coaches wouldn't even
go in that locker room because it was so all
and that was both the home and visitors and it
(35:05):
was horrible. And the visitors' locker room a Rice Cycle
Stadium is not much of an upgrade. And it's it's
all in an attempt to make you feel unwelcome. It's
it's it's that gamesmanship kind of thing. It's like, we're
not going to report injuries because we don't have to.
(35:25):
We're not going to do all these We're not going
to make it nice for you here. We want you
to be uncomfortable. And it was the same thing with
most bathroom situations in visiting locker rooms in the NFL,
and they they would have you know, there were multiple
stadiums and and so you imagine you have fifty guys
(35:49):
and everyone has to go to the bathroom and in
all forms and fashions, like guys have guys, you know,
because you get nerves, and they're guys that throw up,
Guys that have to to do number one, do number two,
and they do it often before the game starts. And
I'm just telling you, you get your whole uniform on,
and it is a chore. It is not fun at
(36:11):
all to get you know, to have to get like
out of your uniform, I gotta get, you know, just
to do number one isn't easy. Just so you know, now,
to make it worse, they usually give you like two stalls,
like there's not a role. You know, it's not a
bathroom that's conducive to you know, handling, because it's not
(36:34):
only players, it's coaches, it's support people. You know, you
might have seventy people in this locker room on game day,
all of them nervous and nowhere to go. Or if
you have to go. They'll have like like Riverfront Stadium.
I just to this day. So the Astrodome was was
a dive by the time I played in it. All
(36:57):
the all the NFC Central which is now the NFC
or the AFC Central which is now the AFC North Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston.
Horrible bathrooms. The Detroit Lions bathroom was not the greatest
even for the home team, but the visiting team is
just it's horrendous. So going to the bathroom in the
(37:22):
NFL is Wow. It's an experience, and it's one that's
not like now today. I'm sure you know, I'm sure
the toilets are made out of gold and they probably
should be for the king to get on its own.
All right, let's just talk about a couple other things.
(37:45):
That's kind of fun conversation. Actually, let's do this. The
New York Giants fired the football coach and a lot
of people, you know, know, and we we kind of
went through some of this firing and hiring stuff yesterday.
And you know, when you're when you're in it, and
(38:10):
you kind of see things repeating, or you see things
over an extended period of time, and you go it's
just not gonna get him better. That's probably what happened
with with Brian day Ball with the New York Giants.
But who takes over for the Giants? Now? A lot
of people are like Lane Kiffin, right, wouldn't that be
the perfect choice? See, because because Lane Kiffin is a
(38:32):
personality that is big enough for New York, and he's
boisterous enough for New York, and he's you know, I'll
tell you a guy who had been amazing in New
York as a head coach is Sean Payton. Sean Payton
doesn't care. And you really kind of need a coach
that really kind of matches that New York mantra. You know,
(38:55):
Bill Parcells was so good there and some of the
other coaches they've had that, you know, and Tom Coughlin
was a very tough minded individual, and of course he's
kind of a Bill Parcells prodigy and what have you.
And a lot of people are going, man, get Bill
Belichick in New York. And I don't think Bill Belichick.
I don't know if he's I don't know, you know,
(39:18):
maybe well one he's too old, maybe not, I mean,
maybe think about it. He started with the Giants I
didn't really think about parcels or not parcels, but Bilichick,
but Billichick would be, look, it'll make it'll make New
York Way interesting. And they got they got some pieces defensively,
(39:39):
they really do. If if Laane Kiffen could find a really,
really good coordinator, the Giants could be they could be
something now there now, I think they're in a winnable
division now with uh, you know, Philadelphia. They're just there
(40:05):
because they know how to do it and they want
it and they figured it out. Dallas is Yeah, they're
a hot mess. They just want drama. The commanders can
be you know, it's not a bad division to be
in right now. And and it looks like they found
a quarterback, and they've got Elik Neighbors, They've got cam Scataboo,
(40:28):
some offensive production that will come back next year. They've
got a really good defense. The Giants could be a
good thing. But I like Steve Spagnola, and he's been there.
I think I think he's a guy that could because
he's a it's kind of the reverse of Andy Reid,
(40:50):
you know, if it's kind of like one of these seeings,
Spagnola finds a guy who can be the coordinator. And
there's plenty of Andy Reid coordinators right now. Now, you know,
maybe it's Matt Naggi, who's with the Charger, who's with
the with the you know, maybe he brings him as
an offensive coordinator and he kind of handles the defense
(41:11):
and like like that. That could be a really fun
fun thing in New York. I think he's a guy.
So it's it's one of those things where you go, well,
you go offense, but then you got to get a
defensive guy and you go defensively. Who's a guy? Because
because Spagnola being with Andy Reid, I'm sure he's just like, dude,
I've really got an appreciation or an understanding or you know,
(41:37):
you know it because because Andy Reid got the right
guy defensively and helped him win some Super Bowls. So
Spaganola might not be a bad choice. He's been with
the Giants too before. He's it'll be interesting and it
could be one of those situations that they do it right.
The New York Giants could be back, and I don't
(41:58):
know if we care or not, but they could be back.
We'll be back in just a few brief moments. You
Tad Jazz did something they haven't done for a long time,
and they're doing it with their young new draft pick.
We'll talk about that and so much more, but before
we talk about that, and before we leave, I have
(42:21):
to tell you about a life changing experience, and that's
with my eyeballs. I went to weight Vision and they
analyzed what was wrong, gave me a great recommendation, and
they executed on it perfectly, and it was a very
minimally invasive procedure and it made all the difference in
(42:41):
the world. And my vision is like, it's insane how
well I see. And you know, you get older, things
kind of change a little bit, and my eyes certainly
were doing that and not now I feel like Superman.
I feel like I can look through lead. Joking, but
it just changed everything and it's just awesome to be
(43:04):
able to see clearly. And I don't know why I
waited so long. I should have done it sooner. And
you can do it now too. Just go check them out.
Wait Vision dot com, w A T E Vision dot com.
This is the Down in Dirty ESPN seven hundred NINETYWOFM.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
You were listening to about Down and Dirty with Scott
Mitchell on Utah's number one sports talk and home of
the US ESPN seven hundred at ninety two to one half.
Speaker 4 (43:26):
After Hey there, folks, welcome back. You know, in the
(43:52):
last segment we talked about it told you a little
story about Tony Sarah Gusa not fitting between two Brownstones
row houses because.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
They're very they're very closely built together. They're not touching,
but they're very close. And I didn't think they were
that close. But Tony Sarah Gusea did not fit between
two Brownstones. And as I was thinking about him and
that time in my career as an NFL player, I
(44:27):
was thinking at the time that I hung out with
Tony Sarah Goose and I have to say that I
could probably it's a lifetime of experience and wrapped up
in one year. And he was just, oh my goodness,
he was just so enjoyable and and of course he
passed away a few years ago, very very early and
very sad. It was basically we're the same age essentially,
(44:51):
but oh, I have just story after story with him,
and he and he's just he's hilarious. He's just absolutely hilarious.
So in fact, oh boy, I literally could just tell
(45:13):
you a story after story, but I won't. Maybe maybe
in the future, maybe we'll do it. Maybe we'll do
a Tony Sarahgusa segment, just just because it's just it's
just funny. And not only were they stories of like
our interaction together, but they were stories that he told
about things, and you know, just a very charismatic individual,
(45:36):
very funny. We had weigh ins on Fridays and he goes,
I weigh three hundred and fifty pounds, and I go, no,
you don't like you weigh so much more than three
hundred and fifty pounds. He goes, no, no, no, he
goes he goes watch, because we were weighing in, you know,
(45:58):
he goes watch, he goes, I will weigh three d
and fifty pounds on the nose. And the scale is
in this like kind of outer area of the showers,
uh And and it was one of those like big
giant like rectangular scales you go stand up on and
it has a digital reading to it and whatever. And
(46:18):
it was up against the wall, and on the wall
were these racks where they had where you'd hang a towel.
And so he would get up on the scale and
with one arm he would he would push down on
the towel rack or hooks and he and he'd push
and it and it's and it hit three fifty, and
(46:38):
they go three fifty and he'd jump off quickly like
you didn't. As soon as that thing hit three fifty,
he was he was off. Now the guy weighing us in,
he kind of, you know, greased the palms of this
guy with either Nike merchandise. That's what that was. That
was currency right in the NFL. Was your Nike merchandise.
Say I'll get your pair of shoes or I'll get
(46:59):
you a sweat shoes suit or something. And he goes, yep, see,
I told you three fifty. And people can't because he
probably didn't weigh less than four hundred pounds. He was massive,
you know, easily three ninety, but he was nowhere near
three fifty, which was his weight. Now, if you calculated
(47:23):
if he was fifty pounds overweight at the time, it
was fifty dollars.
Speaker 3 (47:33):
It was.
Speaker 2 (47:33):
It was fifty bucks a pound, so he was probably
he'd I don't know, he'd probably be what in uh fifty,
he'd probably be twenty five hundred bucks a week in
fines at the time now for weighings because there's so
much money right in the NFL, and it's all a
percentage of like the Collective Bargaining Agreement and so now
(47:55):
so now it's it's well over two hundred dollars a
pound if if you're over whe eight. But man Tony
Sarahgusa was such a such a great guy. Hey listen.
Sean o'connells of course coming up here in just a bit,
in a minute, and you need to tune in, not
(48:17):
only because he's great, but also because all week you
can have a chance to win a pair of tickets.
Now we're kind of in the middle of the week
right now to Fierce Fighting on Friday, November fourteenth, which
is this Friday at the Salt Lake City Mace Masonic Temple.
So they have a viewing area a little bit intimate,
(48:39):
but uh, it's kind of one of those levels of
m m A fighting. Fascinating, go watch it. So you
can enter to win VIP tickets at ESPN seven other
sports dot com or visit us at ESPN So visit
us at ESPN seven, other sports dot com and you
can enter to win, and of course he's giving away
(48:59):
those tickets on a show, so you want to check
it out our Jazz. They scored one hundred and fifty
two points, which is two points show shy of the
franchise record points of the most points scored from Jazz team.
The Jazz also won their fourth game, which is which
(49:20):
is another one of those exciting things for us, because
it took a long long time for the Jazz to
win four games in a season and so hey, they
did it, which is kind of exciting. And part of
what makes it exciting is that the team actually has started.
(49:42):
It's it's it's pick for the UH with with Ace Bailey.
So Ace Bailey is now starting for the Jazz, and
and that that's a a big I think it's a
(50:03):
big deal because you're trying well. Ace Bailey to me
is fascinating from this standpoint. He's trying not to get drafted.
All along, it was like no, he's like he's number three.
Like it's Dylan Harper, it's Cooper Flag, it's Ace Bailey.
And then all of a sudden it got really weird
(50:24):
in the draft and people kind of got freaked out.
He was trying to get to a certain team. He
had a weird manager or businessman whatever he was, he
fired him. There was a lot of rumor that he
didn't want to come to the Jazz and then and
then here he does. He shows up and so they've
kind of slowly brought him into the fold. But you
(50:45):
could see the athleticism, like you just say, no, this
kid's got something here, and he's been coming in off
the bench and now they've kind of got him in
the starting rotation. And it's kind of funny when you
have a superstarish kind of player, that mindset of like what,
I'm not good enough to be the start? You know,
there's something that when you just push him out there
(51:07):
and you just go fly, fly, fly away, you know,
you amazing creature and you gotta you gotta, you gotta
let him go. And I think the Jazz have started
to do that and it's really shown up very well.
So he had twenty points last night and you're just
really starting to see him blossom and so it's exciting
for the Jazz. So there they are, and I'm sure
(51:28):
there's more to come. All right, there's more to come
on the show, but not today. We're done. The Sean
o'connells Show is next here on ESPN seven hundred and
ninety two one FM. This has been the down and dirty.
I'm Scott Mitchell. Until then, We'll see you then
