On today’s Good Day Health Show - ON DEMAND…

Host Doug Stephan and Dr. Ken Kronhaus of Lake Cardiology (352-735-1400) cover a number of topics affecting our health. First up, Doug and Dr. Ken discuss the biggest news stories in the medical world, starting with a focus on work being done to benefit children with asthma to keep them out of the emergency room with the help of a combination inhaler, the creation of a breakthrough material that could offer a novel approach to arthritis pain relief, and a daily cocoa extract supplement to help aid in heart health as we age.

Then, a discussion on some fruit getting a bad reputation for being high in sugar content, new research shows drinking any amount of alcohol likely increases a person’s risk of developing dementia, and how to further protect yourself against developing dementia when you’re already at risk.

Next up, Maria Branyas Morera encouraged scientists to study her ability at a long life prior to her death last August at 117 years old, and the reports have now been published. Researchers analyzed factors that contributed to her long life has revealed a healthy lifestyle, beneficial bacteria in her microbiome and genetics contributed to her longevity, as well as following a Mediterranean diet, abstaining from tobacco and alcohol, and walking regularly until her advanced age made walking too difficult.

Lastly, the conversation shifts to the connection between olive oil and belly fat.

of medicine to find out what.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Is the latest, what have people.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Have been researching, and how the results of that research
affect you. Translated, So a lot of good news actually
here Ken Ken comes to us from his perch down
in mid of.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Florida, Central Florida.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Mount Dora is a great place, and Lake Cardiology is
located there.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
That's Ken's clinic.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
I do at least once a year.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
I like to seeing Ken and his staff a very competent,
kind of friendly and on target, if you will. And
so if you would like that experience, here's the number
three five, two, seven, three, five, fourteen hundred. I get
asked all the time how do I get to Ken?
And I think to myself, I must not be doing

(01:04):
a good job of explaining it because I try to
go through it a couple of times with each program.
So here it is again, reach out to Ken and
his office at three five two seven three five fourteen hundred.
If you're new to the program or new to the podcast,
then you'll be pleasantly surprised with Ken's breadth of knowledge
and his approach. So Lake Cardiology three five two seven

(01:27):
three five fourteen hundred. By the way, Good Day Health

(01:50):
kinds of questions. Okay, so let's get started with some
work that's been done to benefit children, the problem of
asthma with the children and what happens now it appears
as something new on the scene, Ken.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Did any of your children suffer from asthma? As children?

Speaker 1 (02:10):
My son had a little bit of an issue with
not asthma, but breathing and heaving haaler for a little while, because.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
When this does, fortunately my daughter avoided this, but then
when I have a few friends who have children with
this issue, and when it does, you listeners who deal
with this. You know, it controls the family, it controls
your life. And this is some real hope, because there's
hope this week from the British Medical Journal that's going

(02:41):
to actually keep most of these children out of the
emergency room. It's called combination in Hailer's and this study
found that a combination in Hailer two drugs be detinied
and for motor all significantly reduced ug the risks of
asthma attacks and children compared to standard maintenance therapy. This

(03:03):
is a big game changer. This finding supports the growing
trend towards using combination inhaled cortico steroids and long acting
beta agnes as a first line treatment approach for asthma management,
even in the pediatric population now to improve control and
prevent acute flares. Doctors call them exacerbations making the problem worse.

(03:28):
But this from the practical standpoint, mom and dad is
going to keep the kids out of the emergency room
when you don't expect it.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
And there you go, that's some good news. All right,
Let's do the material that is good for earth, right
is pain. Apparently there's something new on the scene there
as well.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Ken Doug.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
This comes out of Cambridge University. I think you've been
there before and the creation of a breakthrough material that
could offer a novel approach to arthritis pain realm and
as we all get older or our joints feel this,
this will help all of us. The material described as
a gel is designed Doug to sense minute chemical changes

(04:12):
in the body, such as the increased acidity that occurs
during an arthritis flare up, and then release medication precisely
when and where it's needed. The squishy material can be
loaded with anti inflammatory drugs that are released in response
to small changes in pH and the body.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
You know, I saw something that was attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt,
and you giving us that information brought me back thinking
about what she said.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
It isn't enough to talk about good health.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
One must believe in it, and it isn't enough to
believe in it, one must work at it. Good health
not easily achieved. I think you would admit that, right.
You got to work at it thoughtful. You were thinking,
you've got to be appreciative of your body and what
an amazing machine it is.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
It is. I mean, think about it for a second.
If you do.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Think about your body and how it works, your brain
and what is connected to and how your lungs work,
and how your heart works, and how your stomach and
digestion work, and how your muscles work when you it's
just it's an amazing and I'm think enough people think
about it and appreciate it. You do because that's your life,

(05:30):
and I do because I think that it's just amazing.
I mean, I drive, and I was driving last night
out to western Massachusetts and looking at the moon and
seeing all these people driving these cars and thinking, what
sort of what does it take?

Speaker 2 (05:42):
What is your what brain management?

Speaker 1 (05:44):
What's going on in the body of the person behind
the wheel of that car. The brain has to function,
your arms and limbs have to function, your heart has
to just everything has to function.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
It's just And I don't think we give.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Whatever the higher power enough credit or wherever however this
all came to be. It is an amazing world, and
we get so bogged down. I'm getting philosophical down. I
probably shouldn't, but I just think we don't appreciate what
we have our bodies, the things that we can love
about ourselves and other things.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
There's so much ken there's just so much.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yes, well stated, and take good care of it.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
Back with doctor Kem Kronhouse. I'm Doug Stephan on Good
Day Health. Coco. Ah, this looks good cocoa supplements. So
why do we have to have a something? Why can't
we just drink coco? I didn't realize this is a
new one on me ken, I didn't.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
I take a lot of supplements and they're.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
All organic and natural. I've never seen a cocoa supplement.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
But they looks like there's some good stuff.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
I mean, we've always thought that cocoa was good for us, Right,
That's what my excuse for eating chocolate because it's good
for me.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Well, it's the flavinols. And this is what search done
in your backyard at mass. General Brigham reported this week
in Age and Aging Journal. The results show the daily
coco extract supplements reduced key inflammation markers in older adults Doug,
suggesting a role in protecting hard health. This finding reinforces

(10:01):
the value of flavinoi rich plant based foods, so, which
are some examples of flavonoils in addition to coco so
these small bioactive compounds. They are found not only in
coco bean, but also in you're ready, here's the list, berries, grapes, tea,

(10:25):
and other plant based foods. So it seems to be
the flavinols in the cocoa which keeps the hard healthy
and is a good excuse to have a little bit
of chocolate.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
But wow, come on, I'll joy I have a piece
of chocolate pretty much every night.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Berries, grapes, tea, and other plant based foods.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Yeah, yeah, all that stuff is I'm fortunately I like
all of that sort of thing. Okay, and we pass
along to you folks because we know you like it
as well. All right, Next up here, Cocoa and chocolate
sometimes get a bad rap because there is sugar in it,
And there are also fruits that get a bad rap

(11:10):
because they have sugar in them. However, not so fast,
because there are some fruits and matter of fact, Ken's
very specific about what he's found this week that's good
for you in terms of a high sugar fruit.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yes, and you've heard me talk about oranges, reassuring you know,
a Florida boyd reassuring all the diabetics that they can
eat oranges, that oranges are not going to give you diabetes.
That natural sugar, you just have to watch the calories
like anything else you eat. But here from George Mason University,
published this week in Foods Journal, DOUG daily mango and

(11:50):
I have to tell you, I plead guilty. I love mango.
Daily mango consumption may hold hidden benefits for those at
risk of diabetes, with participants showing better blood sugar control
and less inflammation despite the fruit's natural sugar content. The
study suggests that it's not just sugar levels, Doug, but

(12:13):
how the sugar is packaged in whole foods that matters.
So enjoy that mango, I know, I did.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Well.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
How might that maybe package means cut up versus whole
or what do you mean by how it's packaged?

Speaker 2 (12:27):
I'm not sure how.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
It's in the in the actual food. For example, white
sugar cane sugar, that's the bad, poisonous sugar. It should
be only a treat. But the natural sugar that's packaged
in fruit excellent for your health.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
All right, So there we have it. A number of
good items already under our belt. We'll be talking about
belly fat as we move along here, and also a
couple of things related to dementia. We cover that pretty
liberally most every week. There's something that you need to
know about, so we'll have that coming right up here
on Good Day Health. Back with doctor Ken Kronhaus Doug Stefan,

(13:14):
a couple of things that are serious about dementia.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
The first thing I want to touch on, Ken.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Is something that people will scoff at. They'll say, Nah,
one drink won't hurt you. But apparently what you have
found here and this medical report is that any amount
of drinking is not good for you for any number
of reasons.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
But shoot them exactly, don't shoot the messenger. This comes
out of the British Medical Journal Evidence Based Medicine Medical Journal.
This week. Doug that drinking any amount of alcohol likely
increases a person's risk of dementia. Even light drinking, which
once was viewed as protective, is unlikely to lower dementia risk,

(14:00):
and that risk increases with the quantity of alcohol a
person consumes. You're ready, every additional one to three drinks
a week comes with a fifteen percent higher dementia risk.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Wow, good God.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
Do you think that's why there's so much dimension or
so much brain?

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Well?

Speaker 1 (14:20):
Is it because you're washing our we are we pickling
our brains.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
I think it's a big factor. Actually, in the last
year it looks like there's less alcohol consumption. But yeah,
you take a while to catch up because the effects
are already in there. But you know, this is a
big thing. I think the use of unprescribed drugs inappropriately
is a big factor. Obesity is a big factor. There's

(14:49):
a lot of big factors.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
All from the danger Danger Will Robinson department. Okay, so
on the other side of the coin, here's some good
news for those who are protecting themselves or trying to
or want to know how to protect themselves against getting dementia.
I guess the suggestion is don't drink. That's one place
to start. But this is another interesting overview of what happens.

(15:14):
I think from the Keep your Brain and Body busy department,
isn't it?

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (15:19):
Doug from University of California, Davis published this week in
the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. We learn from this
long term study that following thousands of adults. It suggests
that people who live with a strong sense of purpose
may be better protected against dementia. Psychologists Doug recognize various

(15:41):
areas in life that may give people a strong sense
of purpose.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
If we have time to talk about this, yeah, sure please.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
So let's talk about them. There's basically I put together
five areas where you can live with purpose. First, personal relationship,
and this includes caring for family members, spending time with
friends or grandchildren Doug, or supporting a spouse or friend. Second, work,
This includes continuing to work in your senior years, mentoring others,

(16:11):
volunteering or contributing to community causes, other The third way
to live with purpose is spirituality or faith, including having
religious beliefs or spiritual practices, or getting involved in faith
based communities or activities. Fourth way to live with purpose
personal goals, such as pursuing hobbies, learning new skills, or

(16:35):
setting and achieving personal milestones. And the last is helping
others through acts of kindness, philanthropy, caregiving or advocacy work.
So live your life with purpose, and I guarantee you
your mind will live longer than it would have if
you don't. Well.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Those are wonderful words to live by and words to
grow by. As on the board of trustees in mi
alma Mater, Heidelberg out in Ohio, I came up with
a We were trying to find a slogan that would
define what we wanted the students to come away with
when they get out of school, and the phrase was

(17:14):
living life with purpose and distinction.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Well, I thought that.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
That kind of As soon as I saw this, I thought, okay, yep,
living your life with purpose and distinction. There's a great
way to protect yourself against dementia. Caltron is on the
top of the food chain, if you will, when it
comes to losing weight, and because it is fall, it's
time to focus on what we seem to get into
every year at this time exactly.

Speaker 6 (17:40):
You know, we call it the aiding season. There's a
ton of dire products out there, y'all. I know it's overwhelming.
There are the quick fixes, are the ones that you know,
we know have side effects, the ones that you're not
sure what's going to be the long term side effects.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
They come and they go.

Speaker 6 (17:55):
Caldron has been proven safe and effective for almost thirty years.
So if you need a little bit of help, especially
this time of the year. Caltrin is gonna get you there.
The website is toploss dot com. There is a big

it's a great time to get on Caltrins. And then

(18:16):

one eight hundred three two five four three six six.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Elizabeth Miller from toploss dot com and Calatrin. Here we
are back on Good Day Health. You can do the
telemedicine route that still is part of our health coverage
in most circumstances. Three five two seven three five fourteen hundred. Doug,

(18:44):
you give the number two quickly, three five two seven
three five fourteen hundred.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
That's the number for Ken's office.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Good Day Health the program on the air. We've been
on the air for twenty some years talking to people
about the biggest news stories in the world. We have
all kinds of things that have been on file for
a long time that you can find wherever you get
your podcasts, whether it's Spotify or Apple or iHeart or
Google or wherever you go to Good Day Healthshow dot

(19:14):
com and listen to the discussion. Last week we were
talking about can we've touched here on what happens to
your life if you're not living it in a moderately
healthy way. We were talking about drinking, but can also
mention the use of cannabis and smoking in general. I
can't understand. You know, this is very prejudicial, and I

(19:38):
admit it, but I find it horrible. I walked by
somebody yesterday and they were smoking, and the stench of
the tobacco smoke stayed with me for maybe one hundred
feet or more. And I drove by somebody that happened
the same day in a car who was smoking in
the smokers out the window.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
You could smell.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
I was driving out on the highway at like forty
miles an hour and I could smell it from the
car in front of me. So what do you think
you're doing to your body? I mean, if oh that
eragon sob No, I'm just saying I grew up around it,
been exposed to it. My mother died because she smoked,
and I remember vividly seeing that haze on the windows

(20:20):
and everything in.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
The house covered with it. And so what do you
think it's doing to your body? I guess is the question.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Okay, let's get to we're talking about how to protect
yourself from things like dementia. Here's a secret. This woman,
Maria Branyaz Marrero, has been all over the news this
past week because she's the world's oldest living person. So

(20:46):
what does she say? Is the reason eating a lot
of chocolate and ice cream probably is in there, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
Ken Well, this is a woman who urged scientists to
study her before she expired so that the world would benefit.
And the report was published this week and sell Reports
Medicine DOUG the University of Barcelona. Researchers analyzed factors that

(21:12):
contributed to the long life of Maria branyas Morea. She
was born in San Francisco, moved main at age eight,
and she died at the age of are you ready
one hundred and seventeen in August of twenty twenty four.
When she died, she was the oldest living person in
the world. DOUG. A study of her life has revealed

(21:34):
a healthy lifestyle, beneficial bacteria in her microbiome, and genetics
that have been linked to longevity. She actually contracted COVID
at age one hundred and thirteen, but made a full recovery.
She followed a Mediterranean diet, avoiding too much fat and
processed sugars. She walked regularly until her advanced stage made

(21:57):
walking too difficult. She also did not indulge in either
tobacco or alcohol. As part of her diet, Brian has
eate lots of yogurt, which kept her gut microbiome filled
with beneficial bacteria, the video bacterium. This bacteria is known
to diminish inflammation, which could contribute to faster aging. Finally,

(22:21):
Briny has carried genetic variants that lowered her risk of
high cholesterol levels, heart disease, cancer, and dementia, and these
can be new targets for new drug development in the future.
What a wonderful life she lived.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
Yeah, and she was very generous with giving away the
secret to her longevity as well by asking people to
study it.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Very cool.

Speaker 1 (22:48):
Doctor Kenn is a noted cardiologist to Lake Cardiology down Modua, Florida,
and as such, he is especially sensitive to any work
that's being done on heart disease ulatory problems. So you
found something this week that focuses on heart attack and
stroke cases and how people can avoid them. Not that

(23:11):
we don't talk about this with regularity, but this is
a big number. Most every heart attack and stroke can
be linked to something that you can change right exactly.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
And this is published this week in the Journal of
the American College of Cardiology DOUG. Nearly all people, as
you're pointing out, who suffer a heart attack or strokes
have at least one of four major cardiovascular risk factors beforehand.
Ninety nine percent of participants in this study had high

(23:44):
blood pressure, high cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, or had used
tobacco leading up to a cardiac event. High blood pressure
was the most common issue. All four risk factors are
preventable and could be managed. So again, blood pressure, cholesterol,

(24:05):
blood sugar, and using tobacco. And I'm going to add
my own fifth to this list is follow your weight.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
Mm hm yep.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
Keep it in check for sure.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
And that brings us around to understanding what goes on
a couple of different things here. I want to talk
about caldron for a minute, but I also want to
talk about people that are making kind of mixing their
own GLP one stuff to lose weight and how that
probably is not the greatest idea in the world.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
Can I'll tell you about that in a matter of moments.

Speaker 1 (24:41):
And then there's a story about olive oil this week that's.

Speaker 2 (24:43):
Really good for your body.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
Caltrin is as well. For many years you've heard me
talk about America's number one choice for natural weight loss,
natural wellness. It's naturally safe, naturally stimulant free, it's clinically
proven twenty eight years of practice and work, and hundreds
and hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people have lost

(25:09):
a lot of weight because they chose to try.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
It the natural way.

Speaker 1 (25:14):
It's a message that really kind of rings a bell
with some people. There are a lot of people I know,
Ken and I have talked about this that are on
the wegovis of the world. And then they supplement with
caltron to keep the weight off. So toploss dot com
is the place to start. That's the website for Caltrin.
You can check out all of the various things that

(25:35):
will help you understand how you can start seeing results
in just a few weeks. It's a great, great product
and you'll find it again at toploss dot com. Let
me this weekend encourage you to go to the website,
especially when somebody sent me a note and they.

Speaker 2 (25:52):

Speaker 1 (25:53):
You keep talking about how awesome all this stuff is
to buy and where we get it and YadA YadA YadA.

Speaker 2 (25:59):
So let them help help you.

Speaker 1 (26:00):
When you go to top loss dot com, see if
you can get a counselor to talk. You can reply

can reply with an email. If you're struggling and you
need some custom work done, that's something I'll help you with.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
Okay, so talking about diets and stuff, here's some interesting
information about olive oil.

Speaker 2 (27:47):
We've been seating a lot of this lately.

Speaker 1 (27:49):
Some people are you know I actually have taken I
don't do it every day, but I'll take a swig
of olive oil sometimes at night with dinner.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
I don't know. I have my belly.

Speaker 1 (28:00):
What I have comes from ice cream, and I understand that,
but I can always hope anyway. So what's the latest
on this con connection between olive oil and belly fat.

Speaker 3 (28:15):
Well, adding some extra virgin olive oil to your ice
cream may be a good idea. This comes out of
Frontiers and Nutrition this week, Doug. The new finding is
that regular consumption of extra virgin olive oil is associated
with lower body mass index the BMI and lower waste

(28:35):
circumference your waste size, and extra virgin olive oil mediates
a significant portion of the Mediterranean diet's impact on central obesity,
that obesity that you just talked about, which is so
hard for us as we get older to get rid of.

Speaker 2 (28:55):
Let's talk a little bit about this. I suggested a
few minutes ago.

Speaker 1 (28:58):
I've seen some information which makes me think that people
are going a little crazy.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
What is GLP one?

Speaker 1 (29:06):
What do we define that as these weight loss products?
But a lot of people are mixing them up and
that's not a doesn't sound like a smart move to me.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
What does it sound like to you?

Speaker 3 (29:17):
Very unsmart? Mixing your own GLP one DOUG for weight loss.
It's extremely dangerous. It can cause severe life threatening health consequences.
There's no oversight for quality or sterility. There's a risk
of having incorrect ingredients. There's a high potential for dosing errors.

(29:40):
There's severe and unpredictable side effects. I've seen them in patience,
and there's also lack of medical supervision. So I would
strongly urge against it. When there was a shortage compounded
pharmacies was okay, but the shortage is over. I would
get yourself an FDA approved prescription. And I know for

(30:05):
some that are costly, but it's really not worth jeopardizing
your health. And I've seen some people have some serious issues,
especially with their eyes, with these unapproved compounds.

Speaker 1 (30:19):
What does g l P stand for?

Speaker 3 (30:22):
What is g l P?

Speaker 2 (30:24):
They call them g l P one. I don't know
what that stands for.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
It stands for DOUG glucagon like peptide one.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
Okay, all right, Speaking of things we can't pronounce, there's
a new oral treatment for chronic spontaneous urticaria.

Speaker 2 (30:43):
Am I pronouncing that correctly.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
That that's that's well, let's talk about it. The the
FDA has approved a new oral treatment for chronic spontaneous urticaria.
This is a condition that causes recurrent, often debilitating hives
and swelling without a known cause. Rdicrry is what we

(31:08):
see in an allergic reaction DOUG. This hives and swelling,
and the name of the drug is Rhapsido. Usually we
know what brings on the artic carry this allergic reaction,
but in some it's just unclear. It occurs often, it
occurs unexpectedly. And this approval of the drug Rhapsido from

(31:31):
nevardis just approved yesterday. This is going to be front
page news today. This approval offers a new non injectable
therapeutic option for patients suffering from this chronic and challenging
autoimmune skin condition. You know, this is instead of having
that EpiPen always by your side and having to jab yourself.

(31:55):
This is a nice oral option. First time we've had
this option.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
Yeah, so that sounds like a great I do a
lot of things here that make a lot of sense,
and for change, the news is more good than not
this week, So take it to heart as you're listening
