A Guerra conclusa, torna finalmente il Campionato di Calcio, seppure in una formula inedita: per la stagione 1945-1946, il Grande Torino affronterà prima un Campionato dell'Alta Italia per ottenere la qualificazione alla Fase Finale Nazionale. La squadra granata si presenta ai nastri di partenza come una squadra ricca di talento, ma ancora da affinare e da sgrezzare, tanto che in molti osservatori non la vedono come la favorita, contro le apparentemente più attrezzate Inter e, soprattutto, Juventus. Proprio il Derby, del resto, inaugura la stagione e il Torino parte nel peggiore dei modi: con una sconfitta contro i rivali di sempre. Sarà, però, proprio un altro Derby, quello del ritorno, a dare la svolta definitiva a un'annata che si concluderà in trionfo.
