Hear from her in the next segment, But first say
good morning to mister TJ. Meadows, who is in the
seat the hot seat. Is that a hot seat down
in the Charleston studios morning, sir.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
It is fairly cozy. It's a nice seat, So I'll
leave it at that. Dave, I'm kind of like pop
by this morning. I've had all I can stand. I
can't stands no more. I gotta tell you, man, these tariffs,
I don't know if you've seen this, the White House
saying they're going to walk back tariffs things like coffee,
coffee prices up forty one percent year over year, by
the way, gonna walk it back on bananas, all these
(02:34):
other things over affordability and what happened last Tuesday.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
Here's an idea.
Speaker 5 (02:39):
Don't do stupid things like ad taxes, which is what
tariffs are to begin with, and then you won't have
affordability problems. There was a time in this country when
being a conservative mint sound fiscal policies, sound economics. I
don't know what happened to that, but the Trump administration
sure as heck forgot the lesson. So now what do
we do. We come out, we start walking all these
(03:01):
things back. I thought tariffs were going to be paid
by these other countries, by the importers. It wasn't gonna
affect to be an Edith because someone else was going
to pay for What happened to that?
Speaker 1 (03:12):
I mean, I don't understand how come coffee and banana
production hasn't come back to the US. Good point? Did
the tariffs force coffee and banana production back to the
United States? I don't get a TJ.
Speaker 5 (03:23):
When you do dumb things, you get dumb results.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
You are wound a bit tight this morning. You are,
I mean, you are at the boiling point. It makes
me a little mad. And then we have a bunch
of senators, eight of them. I guess I don't know
which one of them actually did it. John Thune allowed it.
They decided to make a legal class all their own
so that they could sue the American people over some
guy that subpoenaed phone records and take five hundred thousand
(03:48):
dollars a pop. And Lindsey Graham's like, full steam ahead.
You know what you just did, speaking of steam, You
released your steam. Do you feel better?
Speaker 5 (03:58):
I do feel a little better.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Thank you have that opportunity coming up at eleven thirty
three this morning to release your esteem. You can do
just what TJ did. He gets do that every day.
We give you a half an hour each week. All right,

Coming up at noon today, they'll turn off the memorial
fountain at the center of Marshall University's campus, honoring the
seventy five who were lost in the nineteen seventy playing crash.
Michelle Craig is the keynote speaker this year. Her father,
Michael pristerra was among the seventy five who lost their
lives from the plane crash just shy of Huntington Tri
State Airport. We had the opportunity yesterday to speak with
(05:31):
Michelle about today's ceremony, her father, and the impact on
the Marshall and Huntington community. Coming up later this afternoon
at the Memorial Student Center Plaza on Marshall University's campus,
the memorial Fountain will be shut off at an annual
ceremony commemorating the seventy five lost in the nineteen seventy
plane crash. Joining us on Metro News talk Line is
(05:53):
the keynote speaker of the annual ceremony This morning, Michelle Craig,
whose father was on the plane Michael Pristeria on that
night in nineteen seventy. Michelle joins us So Much News
talk Line. Michelle, good morning, thanks for joining us.
Speaker 8 (06:10):
Good morning to you, Thank you for having us.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
What went through your mind when you were approached to
be the keynote speaker at this ceremony today?
Speaker 8 (06:20):
Oh, well, I've done it one other time, and I
thought they must be desperate. But it's an honor to
do it, and it's not an easy thing, as you
might guess, but it's always an honor and it's a
wonderful thing to be with the Marshall family that day.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Tell us a little bit about your father.
Speaker 8 (06:47):
Well, I don't know how much time you have, but
Tino daughters are pretty proud of their daddies. He was
the son of Italian immigrants who lived in Pennsylvania, and
he ended up with a scholarship to the University of
(07:08):
Alabama and went there to school, and he always wanted
to go to medical school that he needed a scholarship
to go and it just never seemed to materialize.
Speaker 9 (07:25):
But he had worked.
Speaker 8 (07:27):
For a congressman. Also one of his extra jobs he
worked for a congressman from Louisiana on the Alabama campus.
So it was just an occasional job that he would
distribute his newsletter to Louisiana's students, and then during campaigns,
(07:50):
of course he'd do some campaign materials, but it was
just always Eddie Aber was that congressman's name, and he
always encouraged Daddy. He said, you just concentrate on your
studies and work hard and you'll get it done. But
it was just always a dream of his that didn't materialize.
(08:10):
And about ten years later he was in Washington and
went to Congressman Avier's office and the congressman said, doctor
prestera and Dad told him that unfortunately he had not
gotten the scholarship. Well, unfortunately for my father, he had
(08:32):
gotten a scholarship. Congressman Aber had seen to it through
the times becune that they saw his record of leadership
at the University of Alabama and had sent him a scholarship.
And at the end of school, Daddy'd thrown a bunch
of mails into a trunk and sent it home to
(08:54):
his parents. And when he recovered that letter, it was
on his office wall forever, and we had to open
every piece of scrap mail that ever came dark outs
as a result that he always wanted to do that.
And the night of the plane crash, there was an
(09:16):
early morning addition to the Washington Post. It was the
first edition, and you know from your career how everybody
scrambles to get facts, and that was such a difficult situation.
The early edition went through and it listed the fans
(09:39):
and some of the people who had died on the
plane quickly, but it didn't really list many people, but
it said among those who died were several prominent Huntington physicians,
and it listed doctor Chambers and doctor Proctor, doctor Preston,
doctor Hagley, and it said doctor Michael Presteria. So we said,
(10:02):
you know, he may never have gotten that degree, but
a late night reporter convert it to him. But anyway,
he was very involved in community affairs in Huntington, loved
Huntington and learned to love Marshall as much as he'd
loved University of Alabama, and was always a good volunteer,
chier community organizations, and worked hard at his little business,
(10:30):
eventually made it into a much bigger one.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Michelle Craig is joining us here on Metro News talk Line.
She's the keynote speaker at the annual fountain ceremony where
the fountain'll be shut off later today. Our father, Michael Pristira,
was on the plane in nineteen seventy. Michelle, you were
twenty five years old when this tragedy occurred, one of
the older children to be impacted. What kind of responsibility
(10:57):
did you bear being one of the older children during
this tragedy.
Speaker 8 (11:03):
I was probably one of the most fortunate of all
the children who lost parents that day, because, on top
of everything else, I've been able to visit with my
father a good bed. I'd been away from Huntington for
seven years, but I worked in Washington.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
D c.
Speaker 8 (11:23):
And he was there frequently, and ironically had been there
the day before they left on the trip for Greenville,
and my mother wasn't on the plane. So my responsibilities
were so much less than so many other young people
in Huntington. But I ended up with more, you know,
(11:48):
family work responsibilities, and I was pretty much lost in
most of them. But we learned as we went. And
there were a couple of companies. My father had sold
his main company, but there were a couple of smaller
ones in West Virginia, that you know, needed attention, and
(12:09):
so mostly it was just business responsibilities, and we felt
I felt just responsibility for encouraging my younger siblings. I
was five years older than the next one who was
already at Marshall, and ten years older than the youngest
(12:30):
one he was still in high school. So we just
tried to encourage everybody to continue their education and work life.
Speaker 9 (12:39):
The best we could.
Speaker 10 (12:42):
But as I said, I was the.
Speaker 8 (12:43):
Most fortunate to have my mother and have her share
all those responsibilities, or she shouldered the greatest part of them.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
Obviously, I don't know that you ever fully recover from
some like this, But in terms of the football program,
you know, you rebuilt. The football program went on to
great accolades after this particular incident. But talk about a
little deeper of the community aspect. Has the community ever
fully been able to recover from losing all those prominent leaders.
(13:19):
I mean not only kids who lost parents, but just
you know, Huntington moving forward as a city. I'm not
sure you ever fully get over that.
Speaker 11 (13:29):
You know, it affects you.
Speaker 8 (13:34):
I think there's a recent book, and I hope I
get the name right, but I think it's called a
Paradise built in hell, and it talks about trauma building greatness.
And you know what happened is the community rallied like crazy,
(13:55):
and that's what happened. That's what this book says is
thick goodness comes forth instead of all the bitterness that
people rallied. And I'm sitting here with Parker Ward, and
Parker was largely responsible for gathering the fourteen thousand signatures
(14:18):
that went on to do that. And ironically, my husband
was had been very involved in state government and at
the time was on the board of Regents and he
was able to work with Marshall University and some other
people to help get the stadium built. So it was
(14:43):
a very emotional thing for all of us that I
had to laugh.
Speaker 10 (14:48):
On the day.
Speaker 8 (14:51):
Opening day, a plane flew over and it you know,
said thank you coach, and thank you Tom Craig, and
the people behind us said, who the heck is Tom Craig,
And we decided we were just going to skip introducing
ourselves to them that day. But it was a wonderful thing.
And you know, coincidence probably isn't the right word, but
(15:16):
what a wonderful thing to have come full circle. But
the community has always loved Marshall, but I think they
took that spirit that was there, of that good community
contribution to bettering everything, and particularly those people who supported
(15:40):
Marshall everybody on the plane, but people rallied and helped families.
They helped them navigate legal issues, and they helped them
get through insurance problems, and they mentored everybody. I think
there was a lot of encourage and health for the
(16:01):
families that were left.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
They were talking to Michelle Craig, a keynote speaker at
the Marshall Fountain ceremony later today on campus. Michelle I
wrote about this, and I'm second generation, obviously I wasn't
around in nineteen seventy What do you want people my
age and younger to do and to do to make
certain that we never forget and that your father's life
(16:27):
is on it and the other seventy four who were
on that plane, that we never forget their sacrifices, nor
the triumph coming out of that in seventy one and
seventy two and moving forward.
Speaker 8 (16:38):
You know, it's I don't think they'd want it to
be about them. It's I think it's about the spirit
they had and that was left and was felt that
they were, so I think it was generally a positive
group of people felt good about the community, that knew
(17:02):
they needed to participate. And I will say later today
in that speech that they were optimistic and they were determined.
And I think that's what's happened in the community that
we all rallied around Marshall. And at that time there
(17:27):
were so many places in pockets of West Virginia that
were saying Marshall just needs to give up football, and
I think nobody here was having it. I think everybody
just said, Nope, we're going to do it. And I
can tell you that day we won that first big championship,
(17:47):
there is nothing like that in.
Speaker 12 (17:50):
The world that.
Speaker 8 (17:53):
Will keep that spirit from going forward. People who remember it,
and I think now the coaches are so good it
carrying that message forward that if you keep working and
you're determined and you're dedicated to the hard work it takes,
you're going to be a success. And I think that's
(18:13):
what Marshall is doing and I think that's what they'll
get to continue to do.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
I'm curious, do you ever go buy that very modest
memorial almost kind of looks like a deck painted Kelly
green there by the side of the road. You go
by there, and if you do, wondering what reflections pop
in your mind.
Speaker 8 (18:36):
I'm not sure which memorial you're talking about.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
What does the site the site where it happened there.
Speaker 8 (18:47):
I don't know why that. I have never gone to
that site, but I have never felt moved to go
to that site.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Why is that? Why do you suppose.
Speaker 8 (19:07):
I'm not sure. I'm sure it's some kind of sadness
that you don't want to come out.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Michelle Craig is joining us keynote speaker of the Marshall
Fountain ceremony that's coming up later today on the Marshall
Student Plause. Michelle, thanks for sharing with us. We really
appreciate it.
Speaker 8 (19:27):
Thank you so much for having us, and thanks for
your interest in Marshall.
Speaker 12 (19:32):
We appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
That is Michelle Craig again. She'll be delivering the keynote
address coming up this afternoon on the Marshall University campus. Also,
if you want to check it out, I wrote a
little piece yesterday over at the website as well about
my generation, a generation removed from the plane crash, keeping
that memory alive, preserving the stories like Michelle's preserving stories
(19:57):
like Red Dawson, Jack Lingle, the guys who had to
come in in nineteen seventy one, the people who were
there and live through that, keeping those stories alive and
keeping this thing moving forward. And I brought this up
yesterday when I was on with Dave and Amanda on
Metro News Midday the Fountain ceremony. If you go back
to two thousand, two thousand and one, two thousand and two,
(20:20):
three four, when I was on campus, it was starting
to wane. It wasn't that people were not interested, but
there were some who just could not bring themselves to go.
It was still too painful. There were some, you know,
that thought maybe this had run its course, and with
the movie in six you kind of had. Really I
think that's the turning point where you started to have
(20:41):
this healing. You start to embrace it as part of
the university culture, as part of the athletics programs culture.
And I think the university has done a stupendous job
over the last two decades of honoring the victims of
nineteen seventy and the people who came in seventy one
and seventy two and onward, kept the program going and
(21:01):
that persevered through those trials, and again you can read
the story. I've got a post it for you over
at the website wvmetronews dot com. Coming up next, Governor
Morrissey was talking energy yesterday during the aptly named Energy
someone had a couple of announcements. Nick Preservadi, Deputy Commerce Secretary,
is going to join us a little bit later. Brad
(21:21):
housetops By. We'll talk about the Mountaineers thumping on Pitt
last night in basketball and the football trip out to
Arizona as well. Steam Release one hour from now eight
hundred seven sixty five Talk eight hundred seven sixty five
eight two five five, and of course you can text
the show at three or four Talk three oh four.
Steven tj It's talk line on Metro News for forty years,
(21:44):
the voice of West Virginia. It is ten thirty time
to get a news update. Let's check in with the
Metro News radio network. Find out what's happening across the
great state of West Virginia.
Speaker 13 (21:57):
West Virginia Metro News. I'm Jeff Jenkins. Governor pat Si
Morrisey says the body of coal miner Steve Lipscomb is
at the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The
forty two year old Lipscomb was found inside the Rolling
thunder mine Thursday morning in Nicholas County, nearly five days
after the mine flooded. Morrisey says an official cause of
death has not been determined.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
We have more information next week. We'll relay that to you.
Speaker 14 (22:20):
We're going to now move to a new phase of this,
and I want to make sure that we're appropriately honoring
Stephen and his family.
Speaker 13 (22:27):
Lipscomb is a two thousand and one graduate of Herbert
Hoover High School. He served in the Marines and was
rewarded a purple heart mine owner. Alpha Metallurgical Resources CEO
Andy Eatson says Lipskin had worked for Alpha since two
thousand and six. He was a dedicated employee, respected leader,
and a friend of many. A Martinsburg man faces hundreds
of years in prison after being convicted this week on
(22:47):
fifty eight counts of incest, sexual assault, and child pornography.
The jury convicted thirty three year old Brandon More on
Wednesday after a seven day trial. Berkeley County Prosecutor Joseph
Kinser says Warren knew his victims.
Speaker 15 (22:58):
These were people, children that were close to him, family friends.
From what I've learned from investigating and prosecuting this case,
any unsupervised child in his presence was unsafe.
Speaker 13 (23:07):
Warn will be sentenced in February. The former mayor and
former treasurer recorder in the town of four Gay will
be making restitution payments for the next seven years from
stealing from the town. Former marriagor At Hatfield and former
treasurer Recorder Sheila Bowen were sentenced on Thursday. You're listening
to Metro News for forty years, the Voice of West Virginia.
Speaker 16 (23:25):
How can you measure the value of education based athletics, Well,
the value is in what makes it invaluable. That's because
school sports aren't just about winning. They're about learning and growing.
School sports aren't just about gaining trophies and accolades. They
are about learning life lessons, bringing the whole community together,
(23:45):
developing character and integrity, having coaches who mentor you, and
teammates who become lifelong friends. And you can't put a
price on any of that. That's what makes education based
athletics invaluable. Of course, when you participate in school sports,
you want to win and become a better athlete, but
the purpose is so much greater becoming a better person.
(24:09):
Support your local school sports programs and if you have
a student, encouraged them to get involved.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
This message presented by the WVSSAC and the West Virginia
Athletic Directors Association.
Speaker 13 (24:23):
US Attorney for Northern West Virginia, Matt Harvey says, attorneys
are supposed to relieve their clients or their stressors, not
pray on them. Are we commenting? After Thursday's conviction and
Wheeling Federal Court of Wheeling attorney Paul Harris, Sixty two
year old harristers found guilty on twenty nine fraud related accounts.
He helped set up financial trust for clients and then
stole money from them. Harris used the money to purchase
(24:44):
his home and pay for his law off us, who
have to forfeit that he faces a multi year prison term.
From the Metro News anchor desk, I'm Jeff Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
Chris tyre Walt will join us top of the hour.
We'll check in on the whole hog politics. Text line
is three or four Talk three or four and the
phone number is eight hundred seven sixty five Talk eight
hundred and seven six' five eight two five. Five Governor
morrisey expressed excitements about several economic development initiatives while he
was addressing The West virginia The governor's twenty twenty Five Energy.
(25:34):
Summit The governor emphasized the goal of the fifty by
Fifty Generation, plan which aims to Increase West virginia's current
base load generation from fifteen point nine gigawatts to fifty
gigawatts by the year twenty. Fifty he ticked off several. Initiatives,
wait he didn't tick them, Off he listed them off
during yesterday's presentation to the summit to talk about that and. More,
(25:57):
please welcome to the program from Our charleston's. Studios ALONGSIDE.
Tj meadows Is Nick, Preservati Deputy Commerce Secretary. Nick good,
Morning thanks for coming.
Speaker 14 (26:06):
In good, Morning thanks for having.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
Me So for folks who are not deep into the energy,
industry such as we won't mention names sitting next to
you down In. Charleston why do these? Announcements why should
the Average West virginian be excited about some of the
things that the governor brought up, yesterday including that new
gas fire plant that is planned For Harrison.
Speaker 14 (26:26):
County the reason they should be excited is we're seeing
things In West virginia and opportunities In West. Virginia we've
never seen there is such a demand for energy In
West virginia and none of the states around us can
provide that. Energy so now where we, are the country
Needs West. Virginia they need our, energy they need our,
(26:46):
power and we're seeing people come in and saying we
want to be In West virginia and help develop and
generate that power In West. Virginia so these. Announcements the
governor had a tremendous, month a tremendous week announcing two
gas fired power plants In West virginia in a week
when we've never had a base load generation gas plant
In West virginia and we announced. Two and the real
(27:08):
reason people should be excited about this is it's going
to be, jobs thousands of construction. Jobs it's going to
be property tax revenue for the, counties it's going to
be severnce tax revenue for the, counties and it's going
to help lower. Rates so it's a fantastic announcement in
something that when the governor announced just two months, ago
he announced his fifty by fifty. PLAN i never imagined
(27:31):
that we'd already start making announcements of new generation less
than two months. Later so it's they should be, excited
not just for the, announcement but what it signals that
there's going to be tremendous amount announcements to come in
the future as.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
Well so let's unpack this new power plant that was
announced yesterday In Harrison, county six hundred and twenty five.
Megawatts check me If i'm wrong on that is WHAT i,
heard natural gas. Fired as you, said give me some
of the players behind who are going to be doing,
this and this is going to be a merchant, Plant,
nick explain what that is for people who may not.
Speaker 14 (28:00):
Know, yeah so it's it's a merger. Planet what it,
means it's not being built by one of the two.
Utilities it's Not First, energy it's NOT. Aep It's Kendle, Energy,
BLACKSTONE GeV. Verona those are the. Players and when you,
Understand kendall operates generation in six states soon to be,
Seven West. Virginia blackstone's the world's largest alternative asset manager
(28:22):
in the. World they have over a trillion dollars of.
Assets so we're talking about some of the world's largest
financial institutions coming in To West. VIRGINIA GeV verrona is another.
Partner their technology is involved in twenty five percent of
the world's, Electricity so we're talking about global players coming
To West. Virginia so that's very. Significant so to have
(28:47):
them come in as. Tremendous but the point is this
electricity is going to be going To, Maryland, Virginia, delaware
so it's not going to affect our. Rates we get
the benefits of the construction, jobs we get the benefits
of using our energy. Here they're not going to be
competing with our existing, plants and this is not going
to be put onto the right payers at. All SO i,
(29:10):
mean it's just a tremendous, opportunity and that's the vision
of The governor's fifty by. Fifty it's not just utility,
generation it's independent power, producers merchant, plants. Etc so this
is it's a tremendous opportunity for.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
Us nick the Location Harrison, COUNTY. Tj AND i talked
a little bit about this. Yesterday it makes sense because
you have the gas, wells you have natural gas that's
already being developed and drawn out of the Ground Doddridge,
County Tyler, county north Central West. Virginia there this makes.
Sense so is that already the works to tie those
(29:42):
two things.
Speaker 14 (29:42):
Together, yeah that's the entire philosophy of the fifty by
fifty plan is we have the resources In West, virginia
don't go looking for, places go to where the resources.
Are we've worked with some of the companies to develop
there's five locations In West virginia areas that we think
are the prime areas In West virginia for gas development
(30:05):
and economic, development and this is one of. Them you,
know this area In West, virginia when you take, it
it's one of the largest natural gas reserves in the,
World so it makes sense to go. There so, absolutely
one hundred. Percent we're looking for more opportunities in this
same region In West virginia to put more, production more.
Speaker 5 (30:22):
Generation and if you talk about that compounding, effect you,
know one of the things that if you talk to
folks in the gas industry that they've been trying to
do over the years is the product we bring out
of the ground, here it goes on the interstate pipeline,
system it goes down, south the gas the end of
use is somewhere else with a plant, here and who
(30:42):
knows if you're, successful more to. Come, obviously trying to
get to fifty. Gigawytes that energy that comes out of
the ground here is being used, here and as that
demand goes, up that's the potential for more, rigs more,
development more roughnecks in the gas. Industry so it's an
upstream a, downstream it's more, severance, TAXES i, mean all
the way. Around it really generates this compounding, effect, right
(31:05):
that's absolutely.
Speaker 14 (31:05):
Correct one of the biggest issues when the governor came
in and started looking at the energy policy is ninety
over ninety percent of the natural gas In West virginia's
exported out of the state with no. Benefit so that's
one of our priorities is increasing state demand of natural,
gas and these two plans are going to do that
tremendously so That West virginians get the benefit of its natural. Resources.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
Absolutely Nick preservani is joining us a Deputy commerce secretary
The governor announcing several energy initiatives during yesterday's energy summit In.
CHARLESTON i want to go up to the Northern panhandle
for it just a. Moment the four hundred million dollar
expansion By ergon And newell And Bidwell Gas compression weird
and expanding their facility The Northern, panhandle especially the Northern Northern,
(31:49):
panhandle when you get up into That weird And Hancock county,
area nick Once weird And steel was no Longer weird And.
Steel it's crushed the economy. There it's starting to make
a rebound and it seems like, energy natural gas production
like these facilities is going to be key to.
Speaker 14 (32:04):
That that's absolutely, right and again it's the focus of
using what you have where you have. It there's a
lot of infrastructure in The Northern, panhandle there's a lot
of opportunity with the river in The Northern. Panhandle there's
a lot of opportunity with the gas reserves in The Northern.
Panhandle so it only makes sense to focus on bringing
in industries that need that, gas that need those, locations
(32:28):
and that can use the river to assist. Them you,
know the way the governor looks at, it it's not
that difficult use what you have and take advantage of.
It and we're doing that statewide of looking at the
advantages we have in different areas of the state and
see how we can maximize those regionally within the state
to make announcements like.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
THIS i talk all the time about the, grid and,
Look i've been a clear advocate of whatever the grid,
does you, know it does it for economic. Reasons that's
how economic dispatch. Works we have a lot of coal
fired plants here in the. State talk to me about
this initiative for federal dollars that we heard. YESTERDAY i
think it was well over a billion dollars that would
(33:08):
be on the table from the federal government to help
modernize some of these coal, plants WHICH i would think
would make them more cost efficient and better able to
compete in the. Market.
Speaker 14 (33:16):
Yeah, no, absolutely the fifty fifty, approach it's a two step.
Approach we're not only looking at new, generation but we
have to take care of what we. Have and the philosophy,
is if you can refurbish these plants for another fifteen
to twenty, years that's ten point five gigawatts per year
that we're. Extending that is the cheapest generation that we can.
Get it's much cheaper to do this than it is
(33:38):
to build new. Generation we're doing. Both but the question,
is and we get this a lot of why why
are you doing this if you, know the narrative is
that coal is not as economical to generate as gas,
is and that's just not the. Case it is sometimes
it's it's more expensive than. Gas sometimes it's cheaper than gas,
sometimes and that changes on a, weekly, daily and even hourly.
(33:58):
Basis we need the coal generation because at times it's very,
economical and there's actually models out that are projecting but
by the end of twenty twenty, six coal is going
to be substantially cheaper and more economical to. Run so
you're seeing the utilities building multimillion dollars hundreds of millions
of dollars of transmission from our coal plants that they
(34:21):
wouldn't be doing if coal was not going to be
economical in the very short. Term so that's the part
of the. Reason but we also look at this as
what is the cheapest way that we can upgrade these,
plants refurbish these, plants and going through The Loan Program
office with the THE Us department Of, energy we're first looking at,
grants and the des put out substantial. Grants there's going
(34:43):
to be more, coming so we want to first take
the grants the money that doesn't have to be repaid
to upgrade. These then we've been working with the utilities
fourteen units at six, plants spent significant time getting the
upgrades to the, boilers, precipitators, turbines cooling. Towers look at
all these things that we need to do to upgrade
to get those plans to continue. Running and then when
(35:05):
you do these, upgrades they become more. Efficient and when
they become more, efficient they're more economical to, run they're.
Cheaper if it costs less to run, them it's going
to reduce. Rates so there's a lot of thought that's
been put into this.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Process Nick breservani joining us A Deputy commerce. Secretary with these,
initiatives the governor was talking about yesterday how much in
taxpayer money is being used in these.
Speaker 14 (35:29):
Initiatives so the four announcements, yesterday actually there's five announcements
that have been made over the last month that we've
made and it's about four point two billion dollars of.
Announcements and of those five, announcements one million dollars from
state funds were used in a performance based, loan which
means those funds will be repaid to the. State so
(35:49):
when you look at that, number about zero point zero
two percent of these investments involve state. Funds it's a tremendous,
number and it goes back to The governor's. Point good
businesses with good business plans want to come To West.
VIRGINIA i think that these announcements are bearing that.
Speaker 17 (36:05):
Out.
Speaker 5 (36:06):
Good give me a little sneak peak what's coming?
Speaker 14 (36:08):
NEXT i, could BUT i think the. Anticipation let's let
that anticipation.
Speaker 5 (36:13):
Grow can't blame me for. Asking.
Speaker 14 (36:15):
NO i can tell you, this there are things coming
in the near. Future the size of the announcements that
were made and, larger and there's a lot of momentum,
coming AND i think we're going to start seeing some
really great. Things, hey good after, It good, luck appreciate.

Want, yeah last, Night Backyard Brawl basketball, Version mountaineers were
behind early but then went on a roll outscored pit
after trailing in the first half fifty seven to twenty,
eight dominating the one hundred ninety second edition of the,
rivalry winning seventy one forty. Nine Brad howe was providing
expert analysis last. Night he joins us On Metro news talk, Line,
(39:40):
brad good, morning and this is a good win For
Ross hodge in this early five game homestand to begin the, Season.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
Good, morning.
Speaker 15 (39:48):
Fellas and Yet dave perfectly said. There it was a
really good win For ross that establishes this. Team AND
i thought you saw last night what this can be
in some. Form the defense was just absolutely a, lead
and you're, right had to come back from some early
adversity With pitt taking that. Lead but it didn't last, long,
guys thirty one, minutes thirty seconds of control For West
(40:08):
virginia leading in that, game so pretty much a start
to finish domination of The. Brawl and that's always a
good night when that.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
Happens So i'm looking at the box score Here brad
who stood out to you ON wvu. Side let's start.
Speaker 15 (40:21):
There, yeah a bunch of guys and we could spend
four hours going through, this So i'll try and keep
this as brief as possible because there were a ton
of individual, performances But i'll give you two that were
really above and. Beyond harlan Obi, oha the big seven,
footer was dominant inside and that was great to see
in a game going Against pitt that could match his
side and match his, athleticism and yet he remained the
(40:44):
best player on the. Floor nineteen, points six, rebounds eight
of nine from the, floor and three of four from
the free throw. Line so Obi oha controlled the paint
and was just absolutely. Outstanding and THEN i thought the
other one that really stood out was point Guard Jasper.
Floyd looked like a guy that had been in this
situation a million times at thirteen, points seven, assists five,
rebounds three assists and just two, turnovers and really even
(41:08):
more than the stat line as good as, that just
was controlled the pace of this, game and that's what
the difference. Was this was two contrasting styles in terms
of how you want to. Play West virginia's style one
out on both ends of the, floor and a lot
of that is thanks To Jasper floyd expert expert execution
of that. Offense in, Particular.
Speaker 1 (41:27):
Brad howse joining us on one of the Three guys
before the. Game by The way podcast just posted this
morning breaking down last night's win over pip Obi oha seven. Footers,
brad you've seen. Them sometimes you get the ones who
condominated the paint to our Physical how is his game
going to translate once we get to conference play a
(41:47):
little bit later on the. Season do we know? Yet
do you haven't?
Speaker 24 (41:49):
Eye?
Speaker 15 (41:49):
Yeah, No, no you don't totally know, Yet. Dave BUT
i thought that's why last night was such an important
game for, him because he'd been dominant in the first three,
games but that.
Speaker 11 (41:57):
Was to be.
Speaker 15 (41:57):
Expected there wasn't anybody that could match his, size and
last night it. Could pitt was actually the bigger team
through a couple of different seven, footers and there tried
to play them at the same, time And harlan flat
dominated those. Guys AND i think what's interesting is it
sets up now as you move forward and start to
play some of these powerful. Teams when we get into conference,
play you have to make your decision, defensively and the
(42:19):
decision early for, teams AND i understand this was to
try and stick To West virginia's wings and perimeter. Shooters
you've got two really good ones In trace And Eagles
staff and on Our huff in. Particular so the deal
was to leave the inside Players laureent and harl And
obioha on islands going one on. One, well Obi al
has made people pay all year on. That you're talking
(42:39):
about a guy In Harlan fellas that is now thirteen
top thirteen percent nationally in terms of offensive, rating and
that's over twenty three hundred players that have been graded
at this, point so he's been absolutely. ELITE i think
now as you start to scout This West virginia, team
you've got a tough decision to. Make you want to
try and double and dig down and leave some shooters
wide open or are you going to continue to play
(43:02):
and see if he can beat? You so far he, can,
SO i think if nothing, else you don't know what's
coming down the, line but it certainly makes teams have
to think and prepare their.
Speaker 6 (43:10):
Defense, Accordingly huff must.
Speaker 5 (43:12):
Be spending some time at the. Line he did well
nine for Twelve, yeah he.
Speaker 15 (43:16):
Was really, good and that's where you want and best,
shooter one of the best shooters in this league got
into the line and a lot of nine to twelve
is actually. Surprising i'm always shocked when he misses, one
especially from the free throw. LINE a lot of those
team LATE tj When West virginia was assaulting that game. Away,
yeah And pitt came absolutely. Undone they got two player.
Technicals Jeff caple got a third from the. Bench the
pit head coach probably should have had another. ONE i
(43:38):
almost looked as if he was trying to get kicked
out of the, game and the officials showed some great
restraint by not teeing up a second. Time so it
was a parade to the free throw line late for
on our, huff and that's where a lot of those came.
Speaker 1 (43:48):
From Brad hallen JOINING Us mountaineers role in The Backyard

Wv metronews dot. Com brad give me forty. Seconds mountaineers

Speaker 15 (44:03):
If West virginia can keep it. Rolling two really good
performances in wins in one before that in a loss
where you played pretty, well so getting a little momentum
stability at the quarterback. Position and even Though Arizona state's
coming off a bye with an extra week to, prepare
they're coming into this without their starting quarterback and one
of the best receivers in the country In Jordan. Tyson
So West virginia now playing with a little bit of

house money after the last couple of weeks defense has
been really. Good you roll Into arizona and again long,

there in Sun Devil stadium at eleven am local, time

rather go to the dentist and get a root canal
than talk about. That, well, yes in The Hull hok,
politics but he wrote about, them but not about.
Speaker 1 (48:43):
Them if that makes make, sense at least that's HOW
i interpreted. It, okay let's bring In Chris Stirewald, t of,
course is politics editor For The hill And News, nation

at The American Enterprise, institute and best selling Author chris Good.
Speaker 6 (48:59):
Morning corn And, fellas how you do it doing pretty?
Speaker 1 (49:02):
Well you you didn't maybe right necessarily about my favorite,
subject but you wrote around my favorite, subject he, said
joking The Epstein.
Speaker 27 (49:11):
Files i'll tell.
Speaker 12 (49:13):
You the president makes it awful, hard doesn't it when
you don't want to talk about and like sex trafficking
is nobody's favorite topic at any.
Speaker 15 (49:26):
Point.
Speaker 12 (49:27):
Uh AND i especially don't like conspiracy, theorizing AND i
especially don't like the way in which critics of the
president are making wild. Claims they're they're just basically they're
doing To trump What trump did to, them and they're
(49:48):
making stuff, up they're stretching the, truth they're making all
kinds of lurid allegations with no respect for the facts
because they want to hurt him. Politically AND i understand
if you're A, democrat you're going to, say, well that's
what he did To Hillary, clinton that's what he did,
before so turn about his share. Play that's all. FINE
i just don't like to be part of, it. Right
(50:09):
that's something for partisans that they're going to, do AND
i can't stop them from. Doing BUT i don't usually
play their reindeer. Games BUT i must say, that, well
the comparison that The trump folks keep making to The
russia investigation is an apt. One now they say it's
(50:30):
apps because they say there was nothing there and it
was a witch, Hunt and there is truth to that.
Claim but there's also this for a person who was
ultimately not quite exonerated in The muller, report but basically a, shrug,
right like he didn't do anything, Wrong he wasn't actively,
(50:53):
colluding he wasn't doing any of. That he wasn't some
puppet Of. Putince for if for that to be, true
he acted insanely. Guilty. Right do you remember when The
president said that he Fired Robert muller at THE fbi
because of The russia. Investigation he said it To Lester
(51:14):
hold on. Camera they're, like, well what are we supposed
to do with?
Speaker 16 (51:16):
That?
Speaker 12 (51:18):
Like what are we supposed to? Do AND i have a,
Theory AND i don't know whether this holds any, water
but my theory is that in twenty sixteen and twenty,
Seventeen Donald trump did not want to admit an obvious,
truth and the obvious truth was That russia had tried
(51:40):
to interfere in the, election and they wanted him to,
win Not Hillary. Clinton if they had if they had a,
preference it was for him and Not Hillary. Clinton certainly
they were Against Hillary clinton and probably just more for.
Chaos but the Chaos trump was the chaos choice For.
RUSSIA i don't Think russia did very much TO i
(52:04):
Think russia's was effective in amplifying and pumping up sent
in division in The United states on social, media but
they didn't change the outcome of any. Votes they didn't
hack a single, ballot they didn't do. Anything but, yet
insofar As russia was, involved they were on the side
Of trump, winning Not Hillary clinton. Winning Donald trump didn't
(52:26):
want to say, that AND i understand why he wouldn't
want to say, it but also likes pretty obvious and
he didn't want to admit. IT i think on The epstein,
stuff AND i don't know, anything but there's an obvious,
truth which is that in the nineteen Nineties Donald trump
was a gross human right and that all the way
(52:47):
up to the Excess hollywood tape and all that, stuff
he was a. Cad he was a grossling who hung
out with gross, people and he would go On Howard
stern and brag about. It he was famous FOR i,
mean he planted a story in The New York post
about his sex having like he was that, guy and
(53:11):
he was friends With Jeffrey epstein and they ran in
the same. Circles he didn't want to talk about, that
so he went to full. Denial and the full denial
has just turned weirder and weirder and weirder and made
him look more and more, guilty even of things that
he did not.
Speaker 5 (53:29):
Do how would things have played, Out chris if he
would have done the opposite With russia or the opposite
With epstein and just, said here's what it, is put
his ego, aside laid it out, there how would he
have a different presidency?
Speaker 12 (53:43):
Today do you, Think, well here's the thing is that
we don't know what we don't, know and when people are,
evasive and let's be, CLEAR i have never seen a
relatively small whole thing so badly mishandled and, amplified amplified
(54:05):
and blown up as this series of errors and just
head snapping confusion around The fstein. Files we don't know
what we don't know About Donald trump's. Life we don't
know What Donald trump doesn't want us to know about his.
Life everybody's got, secrets you, KNOW i. HAVE i have
(54:27):
seen powerful people destroyed because they were. Hiding people were
looking for something, else and they came upon what was
a seemingly unrelated, problem and then that thinks of, right
this Is this is the thing about having a president
(54:49):
who is, old almost eighty years, old and has led
a wild and sometimes debauched life is we don't know
What Donald trump is worried. About we don't know what
are the things that he does not want to experience
a proctological examination by a special. Counsel but a special
(55:10):
counsel would have been the logical choice if you, said
there's a lot of questions about. This the matter is.
Serious we're talking about, sex trafficking of. Miners we're talking about,
important powerful. People we should find a human being we can,
trust and we should say go and go wherever the truth.
Leads you find this, elliot mess dude or lady and
(55:32):
say go get. Them But trump did not do. THAT
i do not know why he did not do, That
and there are a variety of, explanations but we don't
know because now no one can trust what the administration
says on this case because they've contradicted themselves so often
in so many.
Speaker 27 (55:49):
Ways it's just.
Speaker 1 (55:50):
Weird chris Dar walt is joining us a politics editor
For The hill And News, nation host Of The Hill
sunday On News. Nation, chris you also wrote ABOUT ai
partisanship political scores this. Week what are we to do
with all of this?
Speaker 12 (56:07):
Data, well we're going to do a, lot but question
will it be any?
Speaker 3 (56:12):
Good?
Speaker 12 (56:12):
Well AND i am hardly an artificial intelligence. CATASTROPHIST i
THINK i just talked to a physician guy who runs
the neuro who's The huntington's disease guy At. Vanderbilt he's
like a world a global leader in Treating huntington's. Disease
(56:36):
and we were talking about HOW ai sequenced the drugs
that achieved the first major breakthrough in the cruel and
Devastating huntington's. Disease big data can do a lot of
really good, stuff and as we move into quantum computing
and all of, that the world is going to change.
Radically BUT i tend to think that it's going to
(56:56):
be pretty. Awesome in a lot of one of the
ways that it's going to be challenging for us is, that,
look if you can guess how your neighbors vote and
you can guess what their politics. Are but as more
and more data become, available it's going and the mining
(57:17):
of the data is going to be more and more.
Efficient it's going to be possible to know basically a
political score for Every. American, right AND i don't, vote
So i'm. Cool but the political, score which is based
on your publicly available voter, files plus data about, you
(57:39):
what you, like what you like to, do and it
won't be an exact, science but people will have a.
Score and when you score, something then people tend to
want to use. It and the concern here is that
maybe the best way for me to say it is
a little miss like, romance a little mystery is, helpful,
(58:00):
Right you don't want to know everything about everybody all
of the. TIME a little mystery gives us space to,
breathe room to breathe with each other as. CITIZENS i
have no idea how you two people, vote and AS
i have already told, YOU i do not, vote AND
i can guess, maybe BUT i don't really need, to
(58:21):
and it would be impolied for me to ask, you
and so we can sort of leave it in that.
Space the more we know about each, other the harder
it will be to find the patriotic, grace the space
in between to let people live their.
Speaker 5 (58:34):
Lives why are The democrats so hell bent On epstein,
when in my Opinion trump's reversal on, tariffs the guy who, said,
oh somebody else is going to pay for, it not,
you is having to reverse his tariff position because of affordability.
(58:56):
Issues why aren't they doubling down on? That is it
because they have no plan for the economy.
Speaker 12 (59:00):
Themselves are you, suggesting, sir that politicians are deploying salacious
effects handles to try to harm their opponents rather than
digging in on the meaty issues of the, Day i'd be.
Speaker 1 (59:16):
CORRECT i don't.
Speaker 12 (59:18):
Know we've never seen that, before but maybe this is
the first. Time come, on what are you talking? About
When Donald trump Had Bill clinton's accusers come sit in
the front row at his debate With Hillary clinton In
Saint louis in twenty, sixteen would he focused on the
matters of? State, no he was, saying these people are
(59:38):
rotten all of the. Things this is the problem about overten.
Windows Donald trump has succeeded where everyone believed he would.
Fail it's an amazing story of. Success it's an amazing.
Story he survived an assassination, attempt he was, indicted he
(59:59):
would all of this, stuff and and he won. Again,
anyway his first victory was this astonishing. Win he broke
all the rules. Right one of the rules he broke was,
SAYING i will say. ANYTHING i will say That Ted
cruz is the son of a man who was involved
in the assassination Of JOHN. F. KENNEDY i will say
(01:00:21):
That Ted cruz's wife is. UGLY i will say anything
anything THAT i want nearest weapon to, HAND i. WILL
i will use any. Tool and WHEN i when it
is revealed that WHAT i said was, UNTRUE i will. Shrug,
basically do you remember When Harry reid Said Mitt romney
pays no taxes and he said it in The senate
(01:00:41):
so that he couldn't be sued for, it and then
when it was revealed that he was, lying basically he
shrugged and he, said, well he's.
Speaker 3 (01:00:48):
Not he.
Speaker 12 (01:00:49):
Won he didn't, win did? He Barack obama? Won so
what do you? Want trump did not invent being awful
and telling untruths and doing that. Stuff but he's certainly
demonstrated that if you can keep your supporters in lockstep behind,
you if they both love you and fear, you then
(01:01:10):
you can get away with a lot and you can
do a. Lot SO i Think democrats are just doing
To trump What trump did to.
