Speaker 1 (00:03):
Live across the Great Lake State. You are connected to
Michigan's most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's
Big Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross,
Blue Shield Michigan and Blue Care Network.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthbert.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lancing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
I think it's time, you know, a little less talk
a lot more action.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Because I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic
of the Cold War who's boys charms they wasted on.

Speaker 5 (00:44):
Meet Michael Patrick Shields is oler.

Speaker 6 (00:48):
Good morning world.

Speaker 7 (00:54):
Oh.

Speaker 8 (00:54):
The editorializing of Tony Cuthbert and the orchestra with the
clips that are presented are ironic to say the least.
It's the holidays, isn't it? It sure is?

Speaker 9 (01:09):
Hey?

Speaker 8 (01:09):
You know why we say that I use the Royal
wi in that situation. It's the annual firearm deer season
starting tomorrow. And if that isn't the harbinger of the holidays,
The boujo Let Nouveaux arrival is with Matt Rhodes, and
then of course Thanksgiving and the Lions Game. But it

(01:29):
all starts with the hunting season. November fifteenth through the thirtieth.
Last year, hunters harvested one hundred and eighty thousand deer
in two weeks. Think about that. That's like Michigan Stadium
and Spartan Stadium full of deer. That's twisted, isn't it.
The DNR is encouraging hunters to report their harvests online

(01:53):
through the DNR Hunt Fish app or by going online
to Michigan dot gov slash DNR Harvest Report. And tomorrow,
at first light, it's fire at will and it's the
morning you can hear dawn breaking. As J. P. McCarthy

(02:14):
used to say, Tristan Cole will join us, the former
state rep. Who loves hunting. He'll be somewhere in man
Salona and Art Tebow at Walloon Lake, the past coo
of point us.

Speaker 10 (02:25):
A hunting we willow and the hunting we Wivo.

Speaker 8 (02:39):
Should we play the gunga din or should we save
that for Monday? Tony Cuthberts, Oh, here it goes let.

Speaker 11 (02:46):
Us recreate that moment. But they're gonna be waiting in
that bush. The humble Water Boys sees his beloved comrades
rapidly approaching the deadly trap.

Speaker 12 (02:57):
He realizes fully well.

Speaker 11 (02:58):
That sounding the bugle to want them might mean certain
that undaunted and oblivious to consequence. He briefly raises the
bugle to his mouth.

Speaker 13 (03:08):
And a.

Speaker 14 (04:03):
Bad oh.

Speaker 15 (04:21):
Uh uh uh up up uh.

Speaker 13 (04:43):
Uh h.

Speaker 12 (04:48):
H Okay, So I have bolted you and flayed you by.

Speaker 16 (05:43):
The living God that made you. You're a better man
than I am. Unca din.

Speaker 10 (05:50):
Ah.

Speaker 8 (05:54):
Happy hunting season, most of you are. I hold my
breath because the rifle is now cocked. Oh mostly traveling
by car, I imagine. The Secretary of Homeland Security, Christy Noman,

(06:16):
is praising TSA agents for their work during the shutdown
as a news conference yesterday. She said they stepped up
and showed outstanding patriotism. Also ten thousand dollars checks for
agents who worked. They're rolling out there. The FAA had
frozen some flight reductions now that the shutdown is over,
so Thanksgiving probably saved for people who are going to

(06:38):
travel next week. Tony Cuthbert and I will travel the
Las Vegas for the Formula one race, the Las Vegas
Grand Prix, Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams at the D
and Circa and the F one Arcade and the Forum
shops at Caesar's will also make it over to Resorts

(06:59):
World where they're going to have one of the great
racers of all time we may have access to, So
stay tuned for all of that next week. If you're
into automotive, and our automotive companies are, Ford is coming
back to Formula one racing, so it can be Ford
versus Ferrari all over again, and Cadillac two, so there's
obviously a big Michigan connection. And Derek Stevens, who owns

(07:21):
the D and owns Circa, is a Detroiter and so
that's how we get our fire keepers on when we
go to Las Vegas next week. BBC and I stood right.
I went out in front and looked in the window
of BBC Radio in London. A few weeks ago, they're
going to apologize to Donald Trump for editing a documentary
about him, but they're not going to pay him millions

(07:43):
of dollars. He said he might sue BBC for that.
They did say they're sorry and they won't air it again.
Is that going to be good enough? We shall see.
And I was kind of wondering about this, and finally
somebody has done something about it. Two Republican lawmakers led
by Eric Nesbitt, the Senate Minority leader, who's running for governor,

(08:05):
they want the US Attorney General to have the Justice
Department oversee the elections in Michigan next year. Why because
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson wants to be governor
and since she's running the election, it's a conflict of interest.
Remember I kept poking around about that a few months ago. Well,

(08:26):
they're going to do something about it. Finally, I was
very curious about that situation. We never let the birthday
have a beautiful person pass without taking note. Former Secretary
of State Conda Leeza Rice a member at Augusta National
at seventy one years old. Michael Kernegie met her and
we will talk with him about that coming up just

(08:46):
a little bit later. It's MPs through the AT and
T microphones on a fire Keeper's Casino Friday.

Speaker 8 (10:57):
The plot Baby.

Speaker 20 (11:00):
Says she had a baby with NFL star Stefan Diggs.
The Grammy winning rapper, announced on Instagram Thursday that she
had a baby boy with the new England Patriots wide receiver.
It's Cardi B's fourth child, her first with Diggs. In
her post, she calls it a new season with new
music and a new album and now a new baby.
She didn't give the baby's name or details about the birth.

(11:22):
Cardi B released her new album, am I The Drama
in September. Because Liam Gallagher is once again teasing more
Oasis reunion shows. As Abandon barks on their final few
gigs in South America, Gallagher is suggesting that this won't
be the end of the Oasis concerts. The front man

(11:44):
teas that there could be more gigs for Oasis on
the way. In a post on x A fan asked
if he's sad the tour is ending soon, to which
he replied, I'm not actually, as I know things you
don't know. While he did suggest more Oasis shows, they
might not be as soon as fans think, as he
told a fan next year might be a little enthusiastic
when they asked if his post were code for We're

(12:05):
going on tour next year. Rod Stewart is extending his
one last time tour into twenty twenty six. The new
leg kicks off on March thirteenth in Uncasfield, Connecticut, and
wraps up on August fifteenth in Kansas City, Missouri.

Speaker 21 (12:23):
That's entertainment. I'm Jackline, Carl.

Speaker 22 (12:28):
Yeah, yeah, you're listening to Michael Patrick Shields.

Speaker 8 (12:38):
Why.

Speaker 23 (12:39):
I mean, you could be down here in the big
easy getting a real story. The Real School has some
fascinating stories.

Speaker 24 (12:47):
Check it out.

Speaker 7 (12:52):
You know.

Speaker 8 (12:53):
I've been talking about the elections and been talking about
whether it's a contraflictive interest for Secretary of State Jocelyn
Benson to administer the elections and also run for primary
and general for governor. At the same time. Andrew Bood
on his mood podcast It's called The A List, and

(13:19):
you can get it wherever podcasts are available, so you
could just google it, go to his website, go to
Apple And he talked to Curtis Hotel, who's the current
Democrat party chair. And Curtis Hotel, you know, his family
quite famous in the legislature, and he and his brother
and they talked about the last time there was an

(13:40):
election and the Democrats, who did they run and why
and what about Joe Biden. And here's what it sounded.

Speaker 25 (13:45):
Like, why did we run Joe Biden? Like like like
I gotta, I gotta tie you this, Like if you
were at that level, I mean, somebody should have stepped
up up like John McCain, did you know, Like why
didn't anybody step up and say I'm.

Speaker 8 (14:05):
Going to run in the primary?

Speaker 25 (14:07):
And that to me is like, you know, of failing
that we have to look at and say, you know.

Speaker 26 (14:15):
It's hard, it would be hard for me to disagree
with you. I mean, let me say this. I am
enormous monitor of respect for Joe Biden as a public
servant in the work he did over the years.

Speaker 12 (14:24):
I do.

Speaker 26 (14:25):
But I watched my entire political career flash before my
eyes watching that debate. Yeah, and I think that anyone
who was with him five minutes before that must have
known that he wasn't prepared or that he was in
no condition to do it. And you're right, it's a

(14:51):
thinking about the decisions you have to make as president
are even more serious in the decisions you have to
make on a campaign. I I do think it was
it was a you never know how many people knew,
but I do say that it was a huge concern
that no one thought, Who's going to tell him no?

(15:12):
And I understand it's hard to tell the most powerful
person in the world no, but somebody has to do.

Speaker 25 (15:18):
Sometimes I get all that, and I get the you know,
the basic thought, but we don't have a don't we
have one? John McCain and the entire Democratic Party that
it's going to buck the system. I mean, that's that's
the thing.

Speaker 8 (15:32):
I mean, that's the thing. At the A List podcast
with Andrew Aboot Blue Cross has Michigan covered head to toe,
inside and out, ready to help with health and wellness
resources for the body and mind, and you can learn
more at BCBSM dot com More politics and medias dot vertus.
The truth is in the middle of politics is our

(15:53):
family business. And at Meyer you get more of the
things you want most, more local produce, more home decor,
more free personscriptions. More importantly, you get them all for
lesson Mayer. Why would you pay more? It was Walmart
that came up with President Trump talking with the press
Cory yesterday about Thanksgiving and the prices.

Speaker 27 (16:16):
Thanksgiving me, but it also changed less well, I haven't
heard that you're telling me who you with who you.

Speaker 23 (16:26):
Fake news, your fake news?

Speaker 9 (16:29):
What a what a NBC has gunned down the tubes
along with most of the rest of them.

Speaker 23 (16:42):
Well they feel better about our country right now.

Speaker 9 (16:44):
So I just heard this yesterday that Walmart said that
the Thanksgiving was twenty five more expensive. Twenty five percent
more expensive under Biden. That's a big to me. That's
a that's a big number because Walmart's was affected. I mean,
Walmart is Walmart, and you know they've given you prices,

(17:05):
So that would mean that the whole series of pricing
and costs, you know, the groceries and everything else, it.

Speaker 23 (17:12):
Was a conjob. It was a conjob.

Speaker 9 (17:14):
Affordability they call it was a conjob by the Democrats.
The Democrats are good at a few things, cheating on
elections and conning people with facts that are two.

Speaker 23 (17:25):
It was twenty five percent.

Speaker 9 (17:27):
Walmart just announced it two days ago, twenty five percent cheaper.
This year will be cheaper to have Thanksgiving than it
was a year ago under sleepy Joe Biden.

Speaker 23 (17:38):
NBC fake news. I'm not taking you good.

Speaker 8 (17:42):
Well, you won't have to worry about it if you
win Tonight's mega millions nine hundred and sixty five million dollars.
You can fly to Grandmother's private probably if you win that,
you can get your mega millions at the lottery retailer
or Michigan Lottery dot com or the Michigan Lottery app
or as I mentioned earlier at Meyer, it's Michael Patrick

(18:04):
Shields with you. Speaking of flying, there's new information about
last month's Steadily Plane crash and bath township that's been
released by the NTSB. The three man crew decided to
perform the post maintenance stall test themselves instead of hiring
experienced test pilots for that. The plane had gone routine

(18:26):
maintenance at Duncan Aviation there in Battle Creek and it
needed to have the stall test before going back into service.
It's a scary thing, the stall test. I've heard it
described by pilots before in helicopters too, where they purposely
stall the engine and they do so in order to
make sure that it can be restarted again in flight.

(18:47):
And the captain was killed, the co captain and the
mechanic and they were all from Mexico. The scary thing
is they do that over a residential area. It's beyond
my dot of my knowledge, but not the knowledge of
those types of people who are able to investigate those
kinds of things. So our prayers go to their families

(19:08):
and thank God that everyone else was okay on the ground.

Speaker 28 (19:57):
November is Alzheimer's Awareness month, and expert is offering tips
on lowering the chances of getting Alzheimer's disease. Sandra Darling,
who specializes in preventive medicine at the Cleveland Clinic says
the focus should be on foods that provide optimal nutrients
like fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats. She recommends what's called
the Mind diet, which consists of mainly plant based foods, nuts,

(20:20):
whole grains, and beans. Research from Rush University in Chicago
found that when people follow the Mind Diet, it lowers
the risk of Alzheimer's compared to people that were not
following it. In rates of high blood pressure in children
have almost doubled.

Speaker 6 (20:34):
Since two thousand.

Speaker 28 (20:35):
A new study out of China found that in twenty twenty,
around six percent of children and adolescents had hypertension, putting
them at risk for health problems down the road.

in the numbers, along with consuming high levels of sodium
and processed foods.

Speaker 8 (20:58):
Hell, we are going to corkdown in downtown Detroit to
broadcast live in mid December thanks to Visit Detroit and
visit Detroit dot com and Claude Mullinari and oh we
should probably since we're going to Corktown, ask for directions
from our very favorite Irish podcast or now our new

(21:20):
star of the show, Madam, What is it about asking
for directions on the Emerald Isle?

Speaker 29 (21:25):
Asking for directions in Ireland? Good luck? Is this the
way to the cliffs?

Speaker 7 (21:29):
More?

Speaker 30 (21:29):
Well, if I was going there, I probably wouldn't start
from there. Now, go straight down the road until you
think you've gone too far, then keep going a little
bit more. We measure distance by popes. Just go past
O'shes on the left, and that's been closed in thineteen
id but you'll still see the sign up to the
top of the road. Turn right you'll see a lovely
yellow house used to be owned by Mike O'Shea. A
lovely fella.

Speaker 29 (21:49):
You can't miss it.

Speaker 8 (21:51):
Good luck, Slancher. Paul Long, the CEO of the Michigan
Catholic Conference, was in Ireland this summer and he is
going to give us directions right this moment to a
place he stayed this week called the Godfrey and that's
where we'll be broadcasting from in mid December. Mister Longhow
was it?

Speaker 31 (22:10):
It was really nice, Michael Patrick. You know it's it's
right there in the heart of Corktown. Nemos is right
across Michigan Avenue from it, and it's a lovely place,
a great addition to the city. The Godfrey Detroit. It's
it's part of the curio collection by Hilton. It's at
the corner of Michigan and Eighth Street there in Corktown.
I believe it was built on the property the block

(22:32):
that used to house decades ago, the Lions offices back
when they played at Tiger Stadium.

Speaker 24 (22:39):
So it's a it's a great spot.

Speaker 31 (22:40):
It's convenient to everything. There's a lovely there's a lovely
lobby bar. There is a beautiful looking ballroom.

Speaker 24 (22:49):
Right there on the first floor.

Speaker 31 (22:50):
The rooms are nice and the ones along Eighth Avenue
have a nice view of the city as per the
picture I sent to you yesterday. On the seventh floor,
that's the top floor, and that has the io bar,
which stands for indoor outdoor, and it is basically a
rooftop lounge. It has ceiling to floor windows. It has

(23:12):
a partially glass ceiling or ceiling the floor windows. It
has a partially glass ceiling, and it has, particularly at nighttime,
has spectacular views of downtown Detroit.

Speaker 8 (23:24):
I think you're gonna have a great time, would you
be saying then? That we go to Nemo's and cross
the street. Those are the directions to get to the
Godfrey from Paul Long. And a little Birdie told me
he was at the Michigan State game yesterday and he
does move it around and he could wear green at
both places and be very happy. Visit Detroit dot com,

Speaker 28 (24:00):
INBC News Radio, I'm Mark Mayfield. The FAA is keeping
flight reductions frozen after the government shutdown ended on Wednesday night.
Lights have been cut due to staffing shortages as air
traffic controllers have had to work without pay and many
were calling in sick. More cuts were planned until President
Trump signed off ending the shutdown on Wednesday night. The
FAA says it will monitor staffing levels as controllers start

(24:22):
to receive their back pay. However, issues remain as six
hundred flights have been canceled. Today, Vice President Advance is
blaming Democrats for the government shutdown taking so long to end.

Speaker 32 (24:32):
Oh, of course, privately, we were having conversations all the time,
and frankly, privately the Democrats would recognize the position of
their far left was crazy. But they all feel a
little bit like they're being held hostage by their far left.
You said it very well, Chuck Schumer. This probably ended
his career.

Speaker 28 (24:48):
In his first public comments since the shutdown ended, Vance
said on Fox News that Democrats brought stress to troops,
air traffic controllers, and caused flight cancelations. The Vice President
said it was all for it, literally nothing, claiming the
House deal that ended the shutdown was identical to one
that top Democrats had rejected earlier. Federal employees will now
get back on the job as they and those who
continue to work through the shutdown wait to learn when

(25:09):
they'll receive their back pay. Federal food assistants will also
resume from the millions of people still waiting for their
full November payments. Secretary of War Pete Hegkseth is announcing
a new military operation targeting narco terrorists, Jim Roop reports.

Speaker 33 (25:23):
In a Thursday post on ex Haggeseth said the US
Southern Command will lead Operation Southern Spear. Southern Command oversees
military operations in the Caribbean and Latin America, and in
the post, Haggseth said a Western hemisphere is America's neighborhood
and we will protect it. This comes as the Trump
administration continues to target alleged drug boats in the region.

Speaker 28 (25:45):
I'm Jim and Carney B says she had a baby
with NFL star Stefan Diggs. It's her fourth child, her
first with Diggs.

Speaker 6 (25:51):
You're listening to the latest from NBC News Radio.

Speaker 28 (25:54):
A new Apple feature will allow users to carry their
passports on their phones. The tech company says Digital ID
for phones and Apple watches is being rolled out at
TSA checkpoints at over two hundred and fifty airports across
the US for use when traveling within the country. It adds, however,
that digital ID does not replace a physical passport and
is not currently supported for international travel or crossing borders.

(26:18):
Jack Dorsey says he's bringing back a version of the
social media app Vine and calling it divine. The six
second videos were shut down by Twitter nearly a decade ago,
but an archive was saved. Dorsey, who helped start Twitter,
says those creators own the copyrights to the old videos,
so the rights did not transfer to Elon Musk when
he bought Twitter. And cybersecurity firm Deep Watch is reportedly

(26:40):
firing dozens of workers as it looks to use more
AI tech. Crunch says unnamed workers claim about one third
of the company's being cut. The Deep Watch CEO confirmed
that they are looking for more AI and automation tech report.

Speaker 34 (26:53):
I'm Mark Meefield, Tony Cupboard.

Speaker 8 (27:18):
Is this song by Ted Nugent? It sure is?

Speaker 35 (27:21):
Yes, back in the wall again.

Speaker 8 (27:27):
It's an appropriate song to bring on. Ar Tebow, one
of the most interesting people you will ever meet because
he's a great outdoorsman and that could be fishing, hunting, golf,
you name it, just taking a boat rider, just looking
off his deck on Walloon Lake. And we are here
once again, twenty twenty five rifle season, the harbinger of

(27:49):
the holiday. He was the cooo at boyn USA for
decades and help Everett Kircher and then Stephen Kircher create
the empire that stretches all across United States. And a
veteran too and a good friend to many. He was
also on the board at Farris State University and a
member of the Michigan Travel Commission. And he's with us

(28:10):
right now on our radio stage, our at and t
line Art Tiba, welcome back to the airwaves. The inventor,
too of the snow melt contest. And I don't think
at Walloon there's snow on the ground just yet, is there?
Or is there?

Speaker 36 (28:22):
Well, actually, I'm over at hunting camp a couple of
days early just to sit by the fire and chill
out and look at the wonderful wildness that we have here. Deer, beer, turkeys,
and you know what, there's an eaglesniff that I go
just sit in wonder about how thankful we are to

(28:44):
live where we live in Michigan.

Speaker 8 (28:47):
Just can you love the nature as you mentioned and
the creatures that you mentioned and still harvest them, because
you know, hundreds of thousands of deer will be taken
in the next two weeks, harvested if you will.

Speaker 36 (29:01):
Yeah, I think it was about one hundred and eighty
thousand last year, Michael. But you know what, I also
yesterday had to go back all about one hundred miles
to my home because I forgot the Polish sausage for
our luncheons, and I counted seven dead deer along the highway.
And when I went down to Plymouth two weeks ago

(29:22):
to see my daughter, I think I counted ten on
us seventy five. So the reality is is that we
are not killing enough deer or harvesting enough deer, and
we have good need as you know right now, there
are so many people that are hungry, and I've been

(29:44):
able to get my guys in my club helped take
a dozen deer or so to the man of food bank,
in which the Rotary Club of Potoski in this case
pays for the processing, and those hundreds of pounds of
meat go out within three days. So those who really
need food should not feel bad about harvesting deer.

Speaker 8 (30:10):
Somebody asked me the other day, and I was ignorant
to the answer, like I am for most things. What
is the best way to consume venison?

Speaker 36 (30:18):
Well, I have a trick of venison chili. But the
roast you can cook just like any roast and with
potatoes and carrots, and it's fantastic. But if you're a
little schemeishe about the taste? But they shouldn't be, because
if you trim the fat and all the tallow off

(30:41):
the meat, it's exquisite. The elk is even even better.

Speaker 8 (30:49):
Did you say you drove a hundred miles round trip
back and forth to get Polish sausage?

Speaker 5 (30:54):
Yep, it was.

Speaker 36 (30:57):
The Chevrolet you know, there is a friend of mine
down in hamp in Highland Park owns the Chevy Cadillac dealership,
is a connoisseur of sausage, and he cannot come up.
This year they went out elk hunting. So he brought

(31:18):
up to me in Walloon ten or fifteen pounds of
Polish sausage. That's very well done. And Stanford Chevrolet, by
the way, put to plug in him. Good people, but
they are They're just good people and they know that.
We always have a good camaraderie. And there's about fourteen

(31:40):
of us that get together for lunch and maybe the
deer will go by and we don't see one, but
that's all right.

Speaker 8 (31:49):
Do you speaking of that, do you think you have
more pictures of wildlife that you've taken from your luxury
blind or more deer that you've taken?

Speaker 36 (31:59):
Well, I want thirty four years with an eight point
or better. In the last five years all I've been
shooting our doze. And yeah, I used to be able
to shoot three hundred yards. Now I'm lucky to see thirty.

Speaker 8 (32:13):
But are you a good shot?

Speaker 37 (32:15):
Though?

Speaker 36 (32:17):
Yes, yes, I was trained by special forces in Vietnam
and a couple of lurps teams and they got me
out there about five six hundred yards. But the last
few years, I just don't do it. I've done that,
I've been there, and I just love the peace and

(32:39):
tranquility of sitting in the woods. You really do get
a chance to self reflect. And as you know, my
bride died a few weeks ago, and I'm ready for
it now. You know, there's no anger, no frustration, no sorrow.
All you see is that smile that Johnny had. The

(33:00):
people that are my camp all wanted to come up
and have condolences, and I said it was her turn.
It was her turn. It was not good and it
was a long three months. But you know what, your audience,
I'm sure many people have had those same feelings, and
you just come to peace with it.

Speaker 8 (33:21):
How many years were you married to Jonie?

Speaker 36 (33:25):
Well that's part of the problem because they're kind of saying,
not only was she sweet, but she's Saint Joan because
she's married me for fifty five years.

Speaker 24 (33:35):
Wow, fifty five years there.

Speaker 36 (33:37):
Had been together, and she tolerated me coming over here
for a week or ten days to haunt. But I
guess I think it cost me some holidays all the Montana,
Big Sky, and weeks with her girlfriends in Hawaii. So
I think she got even.

Speaker 8 (33:54):
And she was an artist. It's fair to say, isn't it.

Speaker 36 (33:58):
Yeah, And I guess I can tell you this, but
she got a four point in her Master's of Fine
Arts and Ceramics. And she has three bowls that are
just absolutely pristine. And so I have her ashes in
one of those bowls, and she's going to have to
wait for me, and we'll be spread out together somewhere

(34:20):
in northern Michigan. But you're right, you've had some of
her Christmas cards. I mean every year she would take
six or seven caricatures of animals around a Christmas tree
and call it a circle of friends or peace this winter.
The most notable, Michael was, she made one after nine

(34:41):
to eleven, with all the people that died from all
the countries. She made a bear, she made a deer,
she made a sheep, what else, squirrels? And they were
all different colors, and that to her represented the people
the world that have to get together and share the

(35:03):
sorrow of nine to eleven. So she had some great
thoughts too.

Speaker 8 (35:09):
What a beautiful woman and a beautiful smile. You're right,
And I was blessed to be at your home a
number of times, and you know, we'd come trooping in
there after golf or whatever it might be. And you know,
I could imagine where a wife would be like, oh God,
I've got to entertain these fools again. But never it
was always the biggest, warmest welcome.

Speaker 36 (35:27):
Yeah, she had the best temperament because she had to
put up with me and and all my crazy friends.
But it was a good, good marriage, and that she
supplemented all the bad things in my life and all
the bad things that I went through and now all

(35:47):
the good things too.

Speaker 8 (35:48):
So Saint Joan of t Bow will continue with our
tea Bow. He's in his deer blind right now. The
dear man and his dear late wife, Joni.

Our path to a top ten state is only as
strong as our strength of commitment. It's time to compete
to win. When we do better by our kids, invest
in people, accelerate our economy, and get the fundamentals right,
we will feel a powerful win in our sales that
will move Michigan over it. That's a top ten state.

Business Leaders for Michigan is the state's business round Table.
We're committed to make Michigan more competitive. Time to be bold, Michigan.
It's time to compete to win.

Speaker 8 (36:57):
When it comes to healthcare costs, we often focus on
one thing, our insurance premiums. But what if we're only
seeing part of the picture. The truth is our health
insurance costs reside downstream at the end of the cost equation.
But to really understand what's driving up costs, we need
to look upstream to the healthcare system itself. Upstream, there
are costs like the price is charged by hospitals and doctors,

(37:20):
and the cost of prescription drugs, healthcare administration, and technology.
These costs flow downstream directly into your health insurance premium.
That's why Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is advocating
for a system wide solution to address the rising cost
of healthcare. Blue Cross knows that healthcare is personal, needs
to work for everyone, and affordability matters, and that starts

(37:44):
with shedding light on the entire cost equation from upstream
costs to downstream premiums. Want to learn more, visit Miiblue

VC news Radio. I'm Mark Mayfield. The US Department of
Justice is suing to lock California from enacting its newly
drawn congressional district map.

Speaker 6 (38:08):
Phil Hewlett reports.

Speaker 40 (38:10):
The complaint was filed in California Federal Court on Thursday,
targeting the map, drawn to benefit Democrats and approved by
voters in the majority democratic state. The Trump administration is
asking the court to ban the use of the map
because it accuses California of racial gerrymandering in violation of
the Constitution. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom says the mid decade

(38:30):
redistrict think was in response to Texas approving new district
lines to benefit Republicans. I'm Phil Hewlett.

Speaker 28 (38:36):
The FAA is keeping some flights frozen until things get
back to normal after the government shutdown ended flights have
been cut due to staffing shortages. Issues remain as about
six hundred have been canceled today and Florida carried out
another execution last night, putting sixty six year old Brian
Frederick Jennings to death. Mark Mayfield, NBC News Radio.

Speaker 10 (39:02):
Oh hunting we will go, and the hunting we will go.

Speaker 38 (39:10):
You've got your buston putting in a.

Speaker 8 (39:12):
Boston Hey tradition to speak to Art t Bow from
his luxury dear blind somewhere in the Gaylord area. Of course,
he lives on Walloon Lake and was the longtime COO
of Boyn USA, Very creative a fellow and his wife, Joni,
just passed away a couple of weeks ago. And Art,

(39:35):
did you know Joni before you went to Vietnam? Or
when did you meet her? And how did you meet her?

Speaker 36 (39:41):
Well, at Boyne Mountain, I was waiting for security clearance
to go into the cover espionage business in the army,
and it was going to take about four or five
months to get your security clearance and I'm from Gaillard
and I went over to Boyne Mountain to see a
friend of mine who was working, as they called them,
a riot squatter, which means they would do any job

(40:04):
Kircher would ever.

Speaker 24 (40:05):
Kircher would have you go.

Speaker 36 (40:06):
In ticket sales, ski rental, go out and wash pots
and pans, or clearing dishes, or go to the ski shop,
or sell lift tickets and anyway. He looked at me
and he says, your name is t Bo. Do you
have anything to do now? And I said no, I'm
just sitting around, and so he put me to work.
And that was in sixty six December. In sixty seven,

(40:30):
I went off and went into training and.

Speaker 24 (40:33):
Went to war and then Washington, DC.

Speaker 36 (40:35):
And I came back in nineteen seventy and I made
the mistake of stopping at Boyne Mountain and mister Kircher,
there's no staff here. Would you go to work at
the desk for me? And I said, well, I'm going
back to college. And he said, well, I only need
you for thirty days. And so I'm sitting there at
the desk at eight o'clock at night watching Flip Wilson

(40:59):
on Black White TV in the lobby and in comes
these two hot women and they stand right in front
of the TV, and I wanted her to the desk.
Went over and picked up Joy and put her on
the desk, and I said, you're beautiful, but I was
watching Flip Wilson.

Speaker 8 (41:18):
That's a pretty good line.

Speaker 41 (41:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (41:21):
She was.

Speaker 36 (41:22):
Four years later when we were married, she said, I said.

Speaker 24 (41:27):
I'm going to marry that guy.

Speaker 36 (41:29):
So those women they had an agenda back in those days,
and she was strong enough to outwait me or make
sure that I understood that I was the one. And
that's the truth that was. I tell people that I
found her passed out in the pool table in the
bar at two thirty in the morning. But that didn't

(41:49):
work very well.

Speaker 8 (41:52):
So you went from the front desk to COO of Boying, USA.

Speaker 24 (41:58):
That's correct.

Speaker 36 (41:59):
I was twenty when I got out of college, which
was in seventy one or seventy two.

Speaker 24 (42:05):
I'm getting older now, you know.

Speaker 36 (42:07):
Seventy two. He sent me up to be the manager
of Boyne Highlands and I was twenty four years old,
they think. And I was there fourteen years and we
did a pretty.

Speaker 24 (42:18):
Good job up there.

Speaker 36 (42:20):
And then Chuck Ball, the longtime COO, the only non
owner in the company running the company. I took his
place and I stayed there for twenty years. So yes,
right place at the wrong time. I tell people when
I do a little speeches somewhere, and you.

Speaker 31 (42:40):
Know, well, look at the people we met.

Speaker 36 (42:43):
I met you John McMurray, the Great weather Man, JP McCarthy,
Jim mcsaban, Jim Flick, the golfer and his guy Jack,
a little guy named Jack Nicholas.

Speaker 41 (43:00):
People like that.

Speaker 36 (43:01):
The issue though, is it didn't matter if you were
the president or peon. And I met President Jerald Ford's
you just treat people like human beings. After you spend
time blowing up things and doing the opposite, I said,
I want to do something for somebody if I get

(43:22):
out of here, and it just happened I was able
to do.

Speaker 8 (43:25):
That was your wedding at Boyn.

Speaker 36 (43:30):
Yes, and that's where we're going to have for a
celebration of life. We took a chair lift up the
top of Boyne Highlands to a chapel, had a service,
came back down and had a beautiful meal in the lodge,
and then went to Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand for

(43:51):
our honeymoon. And that's where I met a guy that
we can talk about maybe on Monday. Is the pure
Michigan and all that the basic roots of how pure
Michigan started. Because I was part of that. I just
I'm real proud of that.

Speaker 8 (44:11):
Thank you for that, by the way, and for sharing
the stories of your honeymoon and your wedding and your
marriage and the love that you had for over fifty
years and will live on forever because it's the strongest
force in the universe. Before you go with the two
minutes left, I wish you a good opening day tomorrow.
And were there times in Vietnam when you were out
in the jungle that you thought about Northern Michigan's forests

(44:36):
And are there time in Northern Michigan's forests that remind
you of being alone maybe in the jungle.

Speaker 36 (44:43):
In the jungle it was so hot and that you
were so afraid. But what it did, though, is make
you appreciate what we have here in Northern Michigan. At
our hunting camp, for instance, we took one hundred acres
of oak in harvest because it was going to to die,
and we took the money and fenced it. In ten

(45:04):
years ago, we took the fence down, and now the
flora and the fauna can't eat up all the all
the food in the understudy is beautiful. The oak trees
are coming up, and that's going to be one of
the landmarks eighty or one hundred years from now that
we reforested and made the ground beautiful Here in Northern Michigan.

Speaker 8 (45:31):

The seventeenth rank Spartans beat the Spartans the San Jose

Speaker 35 (51:10):
I think it's one and a half. Philly favored by

The FAA is keeping flight reductions frozen after the government
shutdown ended on Wednesday. Night lights have been cut due
to staffing shortages, as air traffic controllers have had to
work without pay and many were calling in sick. More
cuts were planned until President Trump signed off ending the
shutdown on Wednesday night. The FAA says it will monitor
staffing levels as controllers start to receive their back pay. However,

(54:23):
issues remain as six hundred flights have been canceled. Today,
Vice President Advance is blaming Democrats for the government shutdown
taking so long to end.

Speaker 32 (54:31):
Oh, of course, privately, we were having conversations all the time,
and frankly, privately the Democrats would recognize the position of
their far left was crazy. But they all feel a
little bit like they're being held hostage by their far left.
You said it very well, Chuck Schumer. This probably ended
his career.

Speaker 28 (54:47):
In his first public comments since the shutdown ended, Vance
said on Fox News that Democrats brought stress to troops,
air traffic controllers, and caused flight cancelations. The Vice President
said it was all for it, literally nothing, claiming the
House deal that ended the shutdown was identic the one
that top Democrats had rejected earlier. Federal employees will now
get back on the job, as they and those who
continue to work through the shutdown wait to learn when

be mostly sunny with temperatures in the for forties, while
from DC to Richmond expect highs in the mid fifties.
The Southeast remains chilly, with highs in the sixties for
Atlanta and the Carolinas. Florida stays warm, though in the
upper eighties to the low seventies, with a lot of
sunshine in the Deep South. If you leftover, showers could happen.

(59:14):
Along the Central Gulf Coast, highs will range from the
low sixties in Mississippi to the mid seventies in South Texas. Cold, breezy,
and mostly cloudy throughout the Midwest as temperatures hit the
low forties. North the mid forties to near fifty degrees
further south, sunny skies across the plains States but Chile
in the northern plains with temperatures only in the thirties.
The southern plains will make it into the mid sixties today.

(59:34):
Warm and sunny throughout the Southwest as temperatures hit the
mid eighties in the desert regions with clear skies from
Phoenix to Las Vegas. A storm that could last well
into the weekend is moving into central and southern California.
Rain continues in northern California and the Pacific Northwest with
temperatures in the mid fifties and snow in the Cascades
above pass level. That's your national forecast. I'm Tammy Triheo.

Godspeed Mitain, God bless my Michigan.

Speaker 24 (01:00:37):
Egg Blood brothers out there.

Speaker 5 (01:00:38):
Everybody have a great hot season. Michael Patrick Shields is
on the air.

Speaker 8 (01:00:42):
Good morning world, Good morning Michigan. A very pleasant rifle
season to you. It starts at dawn Saturday morning, the
morning you can hear don drag. As JP McCarthy used
to say, we celebrated on this program because of well
what it does for Michigan's economy, and what it does
for our ecological system, and what it does for well

(01:01:05):
our hearts and spirits and souls too. Going back because
it means the holidays are here. And for Tristan Cole,
it's a family affair of the former state representative, the
Republican from Ernest Hemingway Country and Mancellona is on our
radio stage, our at and T line right now. I
don't know where we find him at exactly this moment,
but in the past he's been with us, rifle in hand,

(01:01:28):
family members around him out in the northern Michigan wilds.
Welcome back to the airwaves.

Speaker 37 (01:01:34):
Good morning, Michael Patrick and listeners out there this morning,
I'm standing in front of my small fireplace, stroking my beard,
looking at trail tim pictures, debating where I'm going to
send my girls, son in law and some friends in
the morning.

Speaker 8 (01:01:49):
Wait a minute, that sounds like you have a hunting party,
so to call them?

Speaker 24 (01:01:52):
Is that true?

Speaker 8 (01:01:53):
Who's going with you?

Speaker 37 (01:01:54):
That is true? I'll be out with all three of
my daughters, my son in law and friend Andy from
down in state. That's only shot a couple of deer.
In fact, you shot one with me a couple of
years ago. And we've got a series of blinds scattered
throughout northern Michigan, some public, some private, and we've got
some fantastic deer on camera that will be chasing over

(01:02:15):
the next hours, days and weeks.

Speaker 8 (01:02:18):
Funny that they're called blinds because there are places from
which you can see the deer but they can't see you.
Is that why it's called that?

Speaker 5 (01:02:25):
It is?

Speaker 24 (01:02:25):
It is?

Speaker 37 (01:02:26):
We use these little pop up blinds are fairly inexpensive.
They shelter, you know, you're from the element slightly. They're
not insulated, they're not heated generally, but they do conceal movement,
and that is something that's absolutely critical to be successful
bagging deer is to conceal movement. Deer's eyes are spectacular,
and then of course there's the nose and the smell.

(01:02:48):
So they're placed downwind from where we expect deer to appear.

Speaker 8 (01:02:52):
Seven three am, if you want to put a number
on it, is when the official season will start tomorrow
morning at rise first light. They call it and then
five forty pm after dark, you better take it inside
or even when you get close to dark.

Speaker 5 (01:03:06):
Right, that's right.

Speaker 37 (01:03:08):
And so Chad Stewart, the DNR biologists for white tail
deer in the state of Michigan, put out a statistic
on Facebook yesterday that says there will be about forty
six thousand deer killed over the next few hours and days,
and that's about one every second or so, according to
his statistics that he put out there, putting a dent
in the nearly two million deer that roam across the

(01:03:30):
state of Michigan that sometimes find themselves in front of
our cars and bumpers and eating our hostas.

Speaker 8 (01:03:37):
A deer license tops out at about seventy six dollars
at the high end, as I understand it. For young people,
it's as little as zero, but you do have to
have one.

Speaker 37 (01:03:46):
You do need a license. Generally people buy a combination tag,
which is a two tag combo good for two bucks
or two dos in the Lower Peninsula or two bucks
in the Upper Peninsula. There's some different dough rags up there.
They're twenty dollars apiece for those basic tags.

Speaker 8 (01:04:04):
What's the weather like this year? I know we had
some light snow earlier. On what are the conditions we
do a hunting standpoint, we.

Speaker 37 (01:04:10):
Did it's actually going to be good. The winds could
be a little shifty, remember back to that nose factor
of being successful bagging a deer. But the temperatures are good.
There's not going to be too frigid cold like it
was fourteen degrees at my house the other day. But
it's not going to be seventy degrees either, which is
really bad. It suppresses deer movement when it's really warm.

Speaker 8 (01:04:33):
Speaking of suppression and deer movement, one percent more people
took place in hunting last year. Your effort to take
legislators hunting and bring people new into the sport doesn't
go unnoticed, then there's some measurable results.

Speaker 37 (01:04:46):
Well, thank you. It's it's something that all of a
sportsmen need to do, is take a kid hunting, Take
someone that's never hunted before. I'm working on a young
couple right now to introduce them to the sport of hunting.
It is a declining participation sport overall. That's due to
just changes in demographics and where people are located geographically
and historically within their families. There's you know, gaps with

(01:05:10):
hunting and gathering, and I just can't encourage people enough
to get outside and spend time trying to bag a deer,
a grouse, a pheasant. Maybe they're squirrel hunting. Maybe it's
something bigger and they want to go after black bear, alker, moose.

Speaker 8 (01:05:25):
In other states, you were a publican legislator. Did the
recent passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney make you
think of hunting in the worst possible way?

Speaker 37 (01:05:35):
Well, safety is always utmost concerned. Know your target, what's
beyond it. Always, always always keep that muzzle pointed in
a safe direction. Something that when I was a hunting
guide for fourteen years, I just pounded into the heads
of all my hunters. Be cognitiant where that barrel is pointed,
to teach every every single firearms if it floated one
hundred percent of the time. Yes, you know, I recall

(01:05:58):
Dick Cheney the Hunting Act in Texas. I did get
to see him speak when he was in Traverse City,
Michigan a number.

Speaker 41 (01:06:05):
Of years ago.

Speaker 8 (01:06:08):
A good shot means the deer doesn't suffer much? Is
that true?

Speaker 5 (01:06:12):
That is true?

Speaker 37 (01:06:13):
So deer have they feel differently than humans when there's
a shocking, traumatic hit like a bullet or a broad head,
when it goes to the deer. Oftentimes they don't react
at all, or they react because it startles them. Sometimes
they just fall right over and it's super quick. Sometimes
they run a short distance and it's over that way.

(01:06:36):
Generally it's a very very fast and super ethical.

Speaker 8 (01:06:40):
The Detroit News says that the Michigan State Police there
are six hundred and nineteen active missing persons cases, and
they say, keep your eyes open if you're a hunter,
because you often go to places that no one else
ever will.

Speaker 37 (01:06:53):
Well, that's it was a really good point. I read
that and like that post that they put out. It
is important that we pay attention to ours. Look in
some of the abandoned buildings that we come across, deep
in the forest, deep in the woods, look inside those.
We do have some missing people in the state of Michigan,
and who knows, there could be someone here from another state.
In old deer blinds, places that people may seek shelter

(01:07:15):
for a short period of time.

Speaker 8 (01:07:17):
What is the ritual for someone who takes their first year?

Speaker 24 (01:07:21):
Oh, the one.

Speaker 37 (01:07:22):
Good one there is there is, and it's pretty universal.
In fact, I get after people that don't do this. Typically,
you take your first finger and you get a dab
of blood on that and you put streaks on their cheeks.
That's generally when you see that in pictures, that means
there's been a first deer killed, and then.

Speaker 8 (01:07:42):
You're supposed to report it. I guess digitally. But some
people go to are there still buck poles?

Speaker 37 (01:07:49):
There is the manselon a buck pole here in my
little town. They've been running for seventy one years as
a buck pole. It's generally the first day or two
of season, manslon first two days. I'm actually sponsoring buck
pull in bell Air and I've done prizes at Mancelona
and bell Are both this year's. It's a place to
go and listen to stories, see multiple generations interacting, recalling

(01:08:13):
Hunt's past present, you know, people that have passed away.
You know, I always think about my grandpa. My grandma
just passed away a few days ago, and I got
to share a picture of a big buck that I
killed a couple of weeks ago, and you know, she
was in rough shape, but she could see the picture
and she said, oh, your grandpa would be proud. And
it's one of those things that is generational and really

(01:08:37):
really matters.

Speaker 8 (01:08:38):
Inside families, inside the culture of Michigan and the heart
of Tristan Cole Bless you and your family and thank
you for your spirit back in the wild again in

because he recognizes the music, don't you.

Speaker 54 (01:13:27):
Well, you know what I thought this Good morning, my friend.
But I thought this lead in was going to be
a little bit of Bing Crosby.

Speaker 5 (01:13:34):
Straight down the middle. It went right down the middle.

Speaker 8 (01:13:38):
We threw you a curveball, and because we know you
love Kebble Beach. But this is the old CBS Sports
when they had golf with Ken Ventury and Pat summer
All and Ben Wright and Bobby Clampett and Gary McCord
back in the day.

Speaker 5 (01:13:54):
Absolutely absolutely balding.

Speaker 8 (01:14:01):
Michael Kernegie, as you know, is the co founder and
principal of the Golf Guidance Group, and he moves it
around quite a bit. But he was president a couple
of times with the Michigan PGA and with the PGA
of America. And it's hunting season, for sure, We've been
talking about that all morning. But for those who don't
like to hunt deer or pheasant or whatever it might be,

(01:14:24):
they like to hunt birdies. And I'm not talking about
flying birdies, duck hunting and that kind of thing. I'm
talking about golf, and that's what he talks about. And
I was kind of curious. You know, it's the time
of wishes, the holidays, and at this time there are
people who will say, there's a course on my wish list,
and I was looking at the cost of some of

(01:14:45):
these wish list courses. They're pretty steep.

Speaker 54 (01:14:50):
Yeah, it's you know, and you know it's amazing, Michael
that I've seen them change so much over the years.
I guess that's just because I'm older. But yeah, the
reality is they can get it because they're sold out
most of the time. Now that list you kind of
sent me, which are you know, top drawer bucket list deals.

(01:15:11):
But if you had a chance to play Shadow Creek
in Vegas and the guests beer was going to be
twelve hundred dollars, you know, you.

Speaker 5 (01:15:19):
Gasped a little bit.

Speaker 54 (01:15:20):
But I think the guy that's paying that is probably
driving a Ferrari.

Speaker 8 (01:15:24):
Okay, you know, fair is fair, and he's probably losing
enough money in the casino to merit maybe an invitation
to a place like that. But could twelve hundred dollars
actually be worth it at a place like Shadow Creek.
I don't. I haven't been there. Maybe you have, I don't,
I don't know.

Speaker 54 (01:15:41):
Well, it's it's it's very special, you know what beauty
is in the eyes of the beholder. I wouldn't pay,
you know, ten thousand dollars for a painting, and that's
nothing in the bit in the art world. But yet,
I you know, it's you know, it's all, it's all
that you want to do. I mean, seven hundred bucks
to play Pebble. I mean, once you play that, you

(01:16:03):
can check it off your bucket list.

Speaker 5 (01:16:05):
But still that's a lot.

Speaker 54 (01:16:07):
You know Shadow Creek. Frankly, they can charge wherever they
want because if you spend action the casino, you got
a chance to play there and probably for nothing. So
and the guy driving to Ferrari, he's probably playing there
for nothing. But you know, it's like it's life, just
you know, what do we really want to do? What
do we have the wherewithal to do? And what's going

(01:16:29):
to make us happy as long as we're centered, you
know what I mean?

Speaker 8 (01:16:33):
Well, I was lucky because you know, I worked for
the PGA Tour and so part of that deal in
that part of Florida was a membership at Sawgrass because
the headquarters was at TPC Sawgrass and sure we could
play there yea as part of the package. But now
people are paying up to nine hundred dollars for the
stadium course to lose all those balls on the seventeenth hole.

Speaker 54 (01:16:56):
Well, and there you go the same thing. You know,
if that's if that's what's gonna choose the pun float
your boat, it's gonna be what it's gonna be, you know.
But if they can charge it, because you know, if
they were if if they had a lot of open
tea times, they would try to sell them some way,

(01:17:16):
but they don't. So you know that's what they can charge.

Speaker 8 (01:17:21):
Let's compare and contrast about it. You know, I was
thinking if you went to a luxury hotel and you
stayed there overnight, you would pay nine hundred twelve hundred,
six seventy five. For sure. They don't let you check
in till three or four o'clock. You have to be
out of there by eleven am. You're probably not in
the room that much anyway. You don't get a full day.

(01:17:44):
And on a golf course, you can be there for
five six hours if you hit practice balls and maybe
you have a meal, and you soak in the whole
atmosphere of the presentation of the place.

Speaker 54 (01:17:55):
You know, it's a probably agree totally, but it's all relative,
you know. Again, Yeah, and think about it. You know,
my business has been through my whole career. And you
notice because we've been friends forever. You know, private clubs,
I mean I've either you know, the head golf professional
director or golf general manager, blah blah blah. And you

(01:18:17):
know the reality is, you know, think of where private clubs.

Speaker 5 (01:18:20):
Have gotten to.

Speaker 54 (01:18:21):
Holy cow, you go to South Florida. I mean, it's
upwards at some places upwards to a million dollars for
an initiation fee. Most of the stuff in the Naples
area is between four and seven hundred thousand, and most
of the stuff in the Jupiter, Florida area is anywhere

(01:18:43):
from five hundred thousand to a million. Now, I can't
imagine paying an initiation fee to go spend my money
to play golf, but you know that's what people do.

Speaker 8 (01:18:55):
So well, somebody's got to mow the lawn, and somebody's
got to plan the flowers, and somebody's got i mean,
maintenance on a golf course like that is six hundred
and seven hundred thousand a year maybe or more.

Speaker 54 (01:19:08):
Uh, let's let's go to about two million.

Speaker 23 (01:19:11):
Is it.

Speaker 54 (01:19:12):
You're not own yeah, I mean if you're king, Yeah,
anywhere maintenance fees excuse me, not maintenance fees. The budget
for maintenance in a in an eighteen hole golf course
today in a climate that you know arguably is twelve
months out of the year because they got to keep
cutting the grass and they got to keep taking care
of it. You know, you're looking at about one point

(01:19:33):
two to depending upon how extravagant you want to get
one point eight two million.

Speaker 8 (01:19:40):
It's another way to appreciate nature, whether you're walking or
in a cart. Kernechie gives it to you. Straights golf
guidance grow.

Speaker 7 (01:19:52):
Then it's started. Well, just we we've been.

to receive their back pay. However, issues remain, as six
hundred flights have been canceled.

Speaker 6 (01:24:26):
Today, Vice President.

Speaker 28 (01:24:28):
Advance is blaming Democrats for the government shutdown taking so
long to end.

Speaker 32 (01:24:32):
Oh, of course, privately, we were having conversations all the time,
and frankly, privately the Democrats would recognize the position of
their far left was crazy. But they all feel a
little bit like they're being held hostage by their far left.
You said it very well, Chuck Schumer. This probably ended
his career.

Speaker 28 (01:24:48):
In his first public comments since the shutdown ended, Vance
said on Fox News that Democrats brought stress to troops,
air traffic controllers, and caused flight cancelations. The Vice President
said it was all for it, literally nothing, claiming the
House deal that ended the shutdown was identical the one
that top Democrats had rejected earlier. Federal employees will now
get back on the job as they and those who
continue to work through the shutdown wait to learn when

(01:25:09):
they'll receive their back pay. Federal food assistants will also
resume from the millions of people still waiting for their
full November Payments. Secretary of War Pete Hegkseth is announcing
a new military operation targeting Narco terrorists, Jim Roop reports.

Speaker 33 (01:25:23):
In a Thursday post on ex Haggeseth said the US
Southern Command will lead Operation Southern Spear. Southern Command oversees
military operations in the Caribbean and Latin America, and in
the post, Haggseth said, a Western Hemisphere is America's neighborhood
and we will protect it. This comes as the Trump
administration continues to target alleged drug boats in the region.

Speaker 28 (01:25:45):
I'm Jim and Carney b says she had a baby
with NFL star Stefan Diggs. It's her fourth child, her
first with Diggs. You're listening to the latest from NBC
News Radio. November is Alzheimer's Awareness month, and a medical
expert is offering tips on lowering the chances of getting
Alzheimer's disease. Sandra Darling, who specializes in preventive medicine at

(01:26:05):
the Cleveland Clinic, says the focus should be on foods
that provide optimal nutrients like fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats.
She recommends what's called the mind diet, which consists of
mainly plant based foods, nuts, whole grains, and beans. Research
from Rush University in Chicago found that when people followed
the Mind diet, it lowers the risk of Alzheimer's compared

(01:26:27):
to people that were not following it. In rates of
high blood pressure in children have almost doubled.

Speaker 6 (01:26:33):
Since two thousand.

Speaker 28 (01:26:34):
A new study out of China found that in twenty twenty,
around six percent of children and adolescents had hypertension, putting
them at risk for health problems down the road. One
of the authors of the study said that childhood obesity
played a significant role in the numbers, along with consuming
high levels of sodium and processed foods. Health update, I'm
marked Mayfield.

Speaker 23 (01:26:59):
Exactly.

Speaker 8 (01:27:12):
Yeah, I don't know if you'll see any wolves when
you're out there hunting. Hunting season is upon us, but
maybe I don't even know if you're allowed to shoot them,
though I think they're protected in Michigan. That's been a
battle that's been going on back and forth for a
long time.

Speaker 5 (01:27:28):
Now.

Speaker 8 (01:27:28):
You're listening to Michael Patrick Shields. The morning you can
hear dawn breaking is Saturday at first light. And while
we're talking about deer and pheasant and duck and bear
and all the rest of it. The Siege of Sarajevo,
if you remember that in the sort of Yugoslavia at
the time, was watched with horror in the early nineteen nineties,

(01:27:50):
and the Serb and Bosnian militants shot innocent civilians in
what was called human safaris. Thirty years later, the prosecutors
in Milan have opened an investigation into Italian tourists who
are accused of paying seventy thousand pounds sterling to join

(01:28:13):
a human safari, shooting and killing innocent Bosnians, if you
can believe such a thing. On weekend trips, they paid
the Bosnian army to go on the rooftops and shoot
people in the city below. There was an additional fee

(01:28:33):
to kill children with sniper rifles, according to the court filing. Now,
this is gruesome and awful and shocking, but I say
this just to remind you that there are monsters that
walk among us, and people don't like to believe it.
They like to close their eyes to such things and

(01:28:53):
they say, nah, na, that's the stuff of horror movies. Well,
I'm telling yet to be careful. I recently installed an
app called citizen I kind of I'm I learned from it,
but sometimes I regret it. A little buzzer goes off
when any kind of crime or any kind of trouble

(01:29:14):
happens within the area that I'm in, because it's you know,
got the GPS kind of thing. It will pop up
and it'll say there was a car accident two blocks
from you, or there's a sexual offender that's within one
mile of you, or whatever. There's a man on fire
on a corner of blah blah blah. It's all happening
around the world, all around all of us. Pretty grim

(01:29:39):
topic this morning. It's Michael Patrick Shields with you radio
stations across the state of Michigan and worldwide. Am I
Big Show dot Com? I'm seeking a transition here.

Speaker 41 (01:29:50):
I don't know.

Speaker 8 (01:29:51):
Let's bring in the psychologist, doctor Heather Zach. There would
be people who would hear that story right now. It's
not a story, it's a real thing that apparently happened.
That would be shocked, and maybe you know, when you
watch a horror movie, it's shocking, but to hear that
that really happens is beyond, isn't it, Doctor? And I

(01:30:16):
don't blame her. Yeah, well, no, you must have been
you must have been speechless.

Speaker 56 (01:30:24):
I actually was speechless there for a minute. I was
thinking it. It's mortifying, it's horrifying. It's it's it is
the thing that we don't want to think about that
human nature provides upon this earth. So that is a
horrific story.

Speaker 8 (01:30:44):
It's one thing to have rage and say I want
to kill that son of them. It's another thing to
go and do it for sport.

Speaker 56 (01:30:53):
Well, I mean, it's it's almost inconceivable.

Speaker 37 (01:30:58):
You know.

Speaker 56 (01:30:58):
Sometimes my daughter, I'll say something like, oh my gosh,
how can that possibly happen? And my daughter will say, well, mom,
you're a psychologist, And I chuckle because I go back
to if I just take off my psychology hat. There
are times that I am absolutely mortified at the way

(01:31:20):
that humans treat other humans and the thinking that must
take place in one's mind in order to justify and
rationalize those kind of treatment and behaviors. And then I
put my psychology hat back on and try to understand
and try to figure out, as we all need to

(01:31:41):
because we want to stop that type of behavior and
that those type of actions, whatever that type implies quote
unquote anything that is, you know, disseminating of another human life.
So yeah, that story is mortifying.

Speaker 8 (01:31:58):
Do you know what I think is kind of weird too.
It lends one to wonder how in the world the
Nazi Germany could have happened, or Japan for that matter,
where humans under the guise of war, I guess were
far more inhumane than they had to be in fighting
a war exterminating Jews, and the Japanese were absolutely horrible,

(01:32:18):
torturing people and killing them. And then you get into
you know, were they soldiers who were doing what they
were commanded. Let's bring it home here to Chicago and
some of our other cities where we have the immigration people,
the ice people, who are carrying out their police duty

(01:32:38):
and yet vilified to the point by other people that
they're willing to enact violence against those who are there
doing their job trying to enforce the law. It's tricky,
isn't it.

Speaker 56 (01:32:50):
Well, again, I think it goes back to the story
that we're telling ourselves. And I think people have to
tell themselves a story in order to do certain things,
be it in their work or otherwise. And so it's
always interesting to me. And this is the clinician me
that wants to understand the story that they're telling themselves.
Even in a situation where someone is told to do

(01:33:14):
something somehow, one has to wrap their minds around the
story and believe the story and or create their own
story in order to justify the action. So, whether we
look at horrific times in our world or we look
at horrific acts fight particular individuals, the story that they're
telling themselves is what we want to try to understand,

(01:33:36):
and not try to understand necessarily in terms of placative
or dismissive, but understand it to prevent, to help heel,
to help move, you know, humanity forward. So the stories
that we tell ourselves can be authentic stories, but where
we lose the conceptualization of human beings having value, that's

(01:34:01):
a story that we can see being told in humanity
in our society now over and over again. And it's
not a good story that we're telling ourselves.

Speaker 8 (01:34:12):
You couldn't shoot a deer, could you?

Speaker 56 (01:34:15):
I could not shoot a deer, Oh my goodness.

Speaker 8 (01:34:18):
And yet intellectually you realize that we are told that
they will suffer unless a certain number of them are harvested.

Speaker 56 (01:34:28):
Yes, and so they're in lies the story right.

Speaker 8 (01:34:33):
Same way if you've got an animal, a puppy, a
dog who's at an advanced age, who's suffering, and they
call it, you know, taking to put the dog down
in a humane way, that's very painful for people, but
they know intellectually it's the best.

Speaker 56 (01:34:50):
Way, right, And so that again, therein lies a story.
We all have to find a story in order to
live with justified I make reasonability, and people tell themselves
all sorts of stories. And we can listen to people's
stories and sometimes we think, oh my goodness, that story fits,
you know, it makes sense, even though it might be

(01:35:12):
a hard outcome or decision. Other times people will look
at someone's story and say, what how you know the
story is inane? It doesn't make any sense. There's no rationality.
It's not a one plus one. And obviously there's a
continuum line right where some stories you can find rationality,
and then you go down the continuum line and you

(01:35:33):
find you can't even begin to touch it.

Speaker 8 (01:35:37):
Be safe today, and thank you very much for your expertise.
You're not a vegetarian, are you?

Speaker 24 (01:35:42):

Speaker 7 (01:35:43):

I tend to not eat a lot of meat.

INBC News Radio, I'm Mark Mayfield. The US Department of
Justice is suing to black California from enacting its newly
drawn congressional district map.

Speaker 40 (01:38:08):
Phil Hewlett reports The complaint was filed in California Federal
Court on Thursday, targeting the map drawn to benefit Democrats
and approved by voters in the majority Democratic state. The
Trump administration is asking the court to ban the use
of the map because it accuses California of racial gerrymandering
in violation of the constitution. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom says

(01:38:29):
the mid decade redistricting was in response to Texas approving
new district lines to benefit Republicans. I'm Phil Hewlett.

Speaker 28 (01:38:36):
The FAA is keeping some flights frozen until things get
back to normal after the government shutdown ended. Flights have
been cut due to staffing shortages. Issues remain as about
six hundred have been canceled today and Florida carried out
another execution last night, putting sixty six year old Brian
Frederick Jennings to death. Mark Mayfield NBC News Radio.

Speaker 8 (01:39:05):
Wow, we went from CBS sports golf theme to football's music.
And that's I think the NBC Sunday Night theme. Isn't
it Tony Kuppert It game this weekend? That's the best
production I think of all the TV production of football,
I think it's the water tight one, and that's Mike Tarico.
Isn't it it is?

Speaker 35 (01:39:24):
You can skip all the pregame, nonsense. Just wait for
the game and enjoy because everything from that is good.

Speaker 8 (01:39:29):
No, no, no. I like the pregame because that theme
song they play for Sunday night, waiting all day for
Sunday night. I think that's pretty cool.

Speaker 35 (01:39:38):
It's also that's fine pick it up there. But everything
before that, find something else today.

Speaker 8 (01:39:42):
See the studio. It's a little bit sad because it
signals the end of the weekend, you know, and you
got the Sunday scaries and you've got to go back
to work on Monday. So you get one more keep
your eyes open until you can't keep them open anymore.
Sunday Night game and you know what. You can always
go to fire Keepers though, because they're open twenty four
to seven and so. But there have been times when
I woke up at four thirty five in the morning

(01:40:04):
and Lansing and say, you know, I think going in
I come and wake. I might as well go to
fire Keepers because they're waiting for me. And we will
be live at six am in mid December on that
Friday before Christmas from the money Keeper's main stage and
fire Keepers Casino, and I hope you'll plan to see
us there and of course the day before we'll be
all over that place at the gaming tables and whatnot.

(01:40:27):
And Lewis Black is coming on February twenty seventh, and
George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers on March twenty seventh. If
you had a red Hot rewards card, you would know
that by now and you'd be able to get your
tickets early. Jim Wise is here, the vice president of
marketing at fire Keepers Casino, and I he says, let's
not skip over Sunday Night because it's the team that

(01:40:49):
he loves, the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Detroit Lions. And
earlier Jim, Tony Kuthbert gave us a stat about the
Honolulu Blue and Silver and the goals Tony that was
quite revealing.

Speaker 35 (01:41:02):
Yeah, the only NFC team that Dan Campbell, as the
head coach of the Detroit Lions is not beaten is
the Eagles.

Speaker 2 (01:41:08):
They are zero and two.

Speaker 8 (01:41:10):
So we bet? Do we bet against a streak or
with a streak? What do we do with that?

Speaker 24 (01:41:16):
I'm going to let's see try to find a nice
diplomatic way out of this, because I like the Silver
and Blue as well. I'm gonna say two isn't necessarily
a streak. Yet how about that you get the four,
that's a streak, but I'm not sure that two is
a streak. Two and a half is the spread on that.
So basically they're saying the two teams are even and

(01:41:37):
the Eagles are getting some Lincoln Financial Field standard love
for a couple of points there. So usually it's in
that two and a half to three range. So the
experts are kind of saying that one's a toss up.

Speaker 8 (01:41:53):
You can bet that game, whether you're at fire keepers
or on the FireKeepers app right up until a kick
and there are some bets. We were told earlier this
week that you can bet even after kickoff.

Speaker 24 (01:42:04):
You certainly can. So there is kind of live in
game wagering, so people need to be prepared because it's
in game. Game is in progress. Even during a commercial break,
you might get ninety seconds, so you've got to be
ready to go. And it's a process that I would
say people should kind of monitor before you just trying

(01:42:26):
to jump into in game wagering because it does move fast.
The odds are constantly changing during that timeframe as well,
so there's a lot of things to pay attention to,
so go at it slow and kind of learn the
process before just diving headlong in. But sure, even once
the game has started. That's the same for an NBA

(01:42:46):
game at ANHL game, So there is in game wagering,
but again everybody needs to kind of do it at
their own pace and make sure they understand what they're
doing and not get drawn in by kind of the
deadline of time. Well, there's only a few more seconds
left and then that will go away, and then potentially
new options will come up.

Speaker 8 (01:43:07):
Have you ever been around Lewis Black backstage?

Speaker 24 (01:43:11):
A little bit, not a lot, but a little bit,
super nice guy. He is always you know, the comedians
kind of are that way. They want to interact with
people and be around people. So certainly not one of those,
even though he has kind of an outward persona of
being kind of curmudgeonly and something like that. No, if
it's completely the opposite. And we're thrilled that even though

(01:43:34):
he has said, listen, I'm not going to go out
and do full time touring anymore, that he has said,
you know what, I'm going to do some one off
dates and one of them turned out to be ours,
So we're really excited for that.

Speaker 8 (01:43:46):
Wow, you wooed him and he chose you, and that's
pretty cool. That says something about his experience maybe with
you in the past, and what he can expect when
he comes to fire Keepers.

Speaker 24 (01:43:57):
I think it says a lot about our room, our technology,
our tech crew, are people, the whole experience. You're right,
because he's got a number of different options and ways
that he could go. So I think it does come
down to you know what, I've been there before. I
had a really good experience there. I've mentioned to you before.
A sound system for bands is just state of the art.
It's similar to what is at the Grand Old Opry,

(01:44:18):
and that gets us a lot of our country stars
because when they hear about the equipment, they say, hmm,
that really meets or exceeds my standards. So that's a
great thing. I'm interested in that.

Speaker 7 (01:44:28):
Wow.

Speaker 8 (01:44:29):
You know, having given a limited number of talks, I
always ask what kind of microphone have you got there?
Because even when you're just going up there and giving
a little speech, if the audio is bad, it's a
terrible experience. So congratulations the Grand ol Opry and the
fire Keepers showroom fantastic. And not only that, now we're

(01:44:50):
getting into the hunting season and the Boujolais Nouveau next
week and Thanksgiving and that means it's time for food
for friends. A fire Keepers tradition it is.

Speaker 24 (01:45:01):
We run it two or three times a year and
it's never been more important than it is this month
with getting food to our friends who really could use
a hand right now between some of the government challenges
and just food prices rising. So you bring five non
perishable items to the fire Keepers Red Hot Rewards desk

(01:45:21):
and we're going to give you ten dollars in free
slot play for that, and now we'll get you started.
Maybe you can save a few dollars on your budget
by using that ten in addition to whatever else you
may wish to use. But you're going to feel good
because that food will go directly to the Food Bank
of South Michigan and get distributed out to all over
the region. So it's throughout the month of November, so

(01:45:44):
you have time still, You've got a couple of weeks
to do it. But you bring your five non perishables.
So you're coming to FireKeepers, you're driving past the local supermarket,
run in and grab a handful of things that you
think people could really appreciate at this time of year
and know that we're going to get it right into
their thanks to the food bank.

Speaker 8 (01:46:02):
I have to believe that ten dollars in slat play
you get for bringing those non perishable items is loaded
with karma, if you know what I mean. If you're
like me and you love FireKeepers and you love gaming,
you believe in streaks, You believe in karma, you believe
in luck and superstition too. Jim Wise, thank you at

(01:46:24):
fire Keepers in Battle Creek. When it comes to healthcare costs,
we often focus on one thing, our insurance premiums. But
what if we're only seeing part of the picture. The
truth is our health insurance costs reside downstream at the
end of the cost equation. But to really understand what's
driving up costs, we need to look upstream to the
healthcare system itself. Upstream, there are costs like the price

(01:46:48):
is charged by hospitals and doctors, and the cost of
prescription drugs, healthcare administration, and technology. These costs flow downstream
directly into your health insurance premium. That's why Blue Cross,
Blue Shield of Michigan is advocating for a system wide
solution to address the rising cost of healthcare. Blue Cross
knows that healthcare is personal, needs to work for everyone,

(01:47:11):
and affordability matters, and that starts with shedding light on
the entire cost equation from upstream costs to downstream premiums.

Oh, it always is of course. In Michigan, State was
on the basketball court last night, and you could watch
this thing even if you're a YouTube TV subscriber because
it wasn't on ESPN. What you gotta love As the
Spartans beat San Jose State seventy nine to sixty. They're
three to zero on the season and their next game,
this is going to be one to circle Tuesday night
against Kentucky at Madison Square Garden the University of Michigan

Place tonight to take you on TCU. In Texas, the
Red Wings were winners last night. The Pistons hosts the
seventy six ers tonight in downtown Detroit, and that is
brought to you by Dean Transportation.

Speaker 8 (01:51:34):
Next week we'll hear Howard co Sell's homage to Madison
Square Garden, which he used to introduce Frank Sinatra for
Old Blue Eyes is back, and that'll be our way
of saluting the Spartans.

INVC News Radio. I'm Mark Mayfield. The US Department of
Justice is suing to black California from enacting its newly
joined congressional district map.

Speaker 6 (01:51:58):
Bill Hewlett reports.

Speaker 40 (01:51:59):
The plate was filed in California Federal Court on Thursday,
targeting the map, drawn to benefit Democrats and approved by
voters in the majority Democratic state. The Trump administration is
asking the court to ban the use of the map
because it accuses California of racial gerrymandering in violation of
the constitution. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom says the mid decade
redistrict think was in response to Texas approving new district

Speaker 28 (01:52:25):
The FAA is keeping some flights frozen until things get
back to normal after the government shutdown.

Speaker 12 (01:52:30):
Ended.

Speaker 28 (01:52:30):
Flights have been cut due to staffing shortages. Issues remain
as about six hundred have been canceled today, and Florida
carried out another execution last night, putting sixty six year
old Brian Frederick Jennings to death Bark Mayfield, NBC News Radio.

Speaker 3 (01:52:43):
In the Northeast, expect northwest winds Bartley, cloudy skies and
highs in the mid forties. The northern Mid Atlantic States
will be mostly sunny with temperatures in the upper forties,
while from DC to Richmond expect highs in the mid fifties.
The Southeast remains chilly, with highs in the sixties for
Atlanta and the Carolinas. Florida stays war though in the
upper eighties to the low seventies, with a lot of
sunshine in the Deep South. If you leftover, showers could happen.

(01:53:05):
Along the central Gulf Coast, highs will range from the
low sixties in Mississippi to the mid seventies in South Texas. Cold, breezy,
and mostly cloudy throughout the Midwest as temperatures hit the
low forties. North the mid forties to near fifty degrees.
Further south, sunny skies across the plains States but Chile
in the northern plains with temperatures only in the thirties.
The southern plains will make it into the mid sixties today.
Worm and sunny throughout the Southwest as temperature hit the

mid eighties in the desert regions, with clear skies from
Phoenix to Las Vegas. A storm that could last well
into the weekend is moving into central and southern California.
Rain continues in northern California and the Pacific Northwest with
temperatures in the mid fifties and snow in the Cascades
above pass level. That's your national forecast.

In BC News.

Speaker 28 (01:54:00):
I'm Mark Mayfield. The FAA is keeping flight reductions frozen
after the government shutdown ended on Wednesday night. Lights have
been cut due to staffing shortages as air traffic controllers
have had to work without pay and many were calling
in sick. More cuts were planned until President Trump signed
off ending the shutdown on Wednesday night. The FAA says
it will monitor staffing levels as controllers start to receive

(01:54:21):
their back pay. However, issues remain as six hundred flights
have been canceled.

Speaker 6 (01:54:25):
Today.

Speaker 28 (01:54:26):
Vice President Advance is blaming Democrats for the government shutdown
taking so long to end.

Speaker 32 (01:54:31):
Oh, of course, privately, we were having conversations all the time,
and frankly, privately the Democrats would recognize the position of
their far left was crazy. But they all feel a
little bit like they're being held hostage by their far left.
You said it very well, Chuck Schumer. This probably ended
his career.

Speaker 28 (01:54:46):
In his first public comments since the shutdown ended, Vance
said on Fox News that Democrats brought stress to troops,
air traffic controllers, and caused flight cancelations. The Vice President
said it was all for it, literally nothing, claiming the
House deal that ended the shutdown was identical the one
that top Democrats had rejected earlier. Federal employees will now
get back on the job as they and those who
continue to work through the shutdown wait to learn when

(01:55:07):
they'll receive their back pay. Federal food assistants will also
resume from the millions of people still waiting for their
full November payments. Secretary of War Pete Hegkseth is announcing
a new military operation targeting narco terrorists, Jim Roop reports in.

Speaker 33 (01:55:21):
A Thursday post on ex Haggeseth said the US Southern
Command will lead Operation Southern Spear. Southern Command oversees military
operations in the Caribbean and Latin America, and in the post,
Haggseth said, a Western hemisphere is America's neighborhood and we
will protect it. This comes as the Trump administration continues
to target alleged drug boats in the region.

Speaker 28 (01:55:43):

A new report says there's a young home buyer crisis
in the US. According to the National Association of Realtors,
the typical age of first time buyer climbed to an
all time high of forty years. The report also says
the number of first time home buyers dropped to a
record low of twenty one percent and twenty twenty five.
On top of that, a Coldwell Banker report says eighty

Disney reportedly losing millions of dollars per day as its
ongoing carrier dispute with YouTube TV continues. Tammy Trihue explains.

Speaker 3 (01:56:46):
According to reports from the Rap, Disney could be out
sixty million dollars in lost revenue if the stalemate reaches
fourteen days. Disney owned channels like ABC, ESPN and others
have been dark on the Google based subscription streamer since Halloween.
That's prompted the service offer a twenty dollars rebate to
customers to compensate them for the disruption.

Speaker 48 (01:57:03):
And this week we had to say goodbye to a
tiny monetary unit of payment. The US mint process the
last penny more from bre Tennis.

Speaker 50 (01:57:11):
The treasurer says, Indy, the penny is going to save
the US fifty six million dollars, but at what cost.
We'll lose a penny for your thoughts. You won't be
able to give your two cents. No good luck because
you won't find one on the ground. What will you
throw in a wishing well? And is it the end
of penny loafers? The government is not making more, but
you can still use the ones you have, most likely

make my job easier, you know, as a couple of

those guys are coming to push to pole and getting
me into the end zone.

Speaker 7 (01:58:16):
And so those guys work so hard.

Speaker 44 (01:58:18):

He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 3 (02:00:32):
I think it's time, you know, a little less talk
a lot more action.

Speaker 4 (02:00:35):
Because I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic
of the Cold War. Who's boys charms they wasted on me?

Speaker 5 (02:00:43):
Michael Patrick Shields is bler.

Speaker 8 (02:00:46):
Good morning world. Oh the editorializing of Tony cuthbert any
orchestra with the clips that are presented ronic to say
the least. It's the holidays, isn't it? It sure is? Hey?

(02:01:08):
You know why we say that. I use the Royal
wi in that situation. It's the annual firearm deer season
starting tomorrow. And if that isn't the harbinger of the holidays,
the boujo Let nouveaux arrival is with Matt Rhodes and
then of course Thanksgiving and the Lions Game. But it

(02:01:28):
all starts with the hunting season November fifteenth through the thirtieth.
Last year, hunters harvested one hundred and eighty thousand deer
in two weeks. Think about that. That's like Michigan Stadium
and Spartan Stadium full of deer. That's twisted, isn't it.
The DNR is encouraging hunters to report their harvests online

(02:01:52):
through the DNR Hunt Fish app or by going online
to Michigan dot gov slash DNR Harvest Report Tomorrow. At
first light, it's fire at will and it's the morning.
You can hear dawn breaking. As J. P. McCarthy used

(02:02:12):
to say, Tristan Cole will join us, the former state rep.
Who loves hunting. He'll be somewhere in man Salona and
Art Tebow at Walloon Lake. The past coo of boy us.

Speaker 10 (02:02:23):
A hunting we will go, and the hunting we will bow.

Speaker 8 (02:02:37):
Should we play the gunga din? Or should we save
that for Monday? Tony cuthberts, Oh, here it goes.

Speaker 11 (02:02:44):
Let us recreate that moment. But they're gonna be waiting
in that bush. The humble water boyses his beloved comrades,
rapidly approaching the deadly trap. He realizes fully well that
sounding the bugle to wad them might means right and death.
Undaunted and oblivious to consequence, he bravely raises the bugle

Speaker 14 (02:04:01):
Bohm, up up.

Speaker 15 (02:04:33):
Up up.

Speaker 8 (02:04:39):
Us see.

Speaker 15 (02:04:42):
Ah h.

Speaker 16 (02:04:49):
H, so I have bolth a you and flayed you

(02:05:41):
by the living God that made you. You're a better
man than I am. Uncan did.

Speaker 8 (02:05:49):
Ah. Happy hunting season, most of you are. I hold
my breath because that is no cocked oh mostly traveling

(02:06:09):
by car, I imagine. The Secretary of Homeland Security, Christy Noman,
is praising TSA agents for their work during the shutdown.
As a news conference yesterday, she said they stepped up
and showed outstanding patriotism. Also, ten thousand dollars checks for
agents who worked are rolling out there. The FAA had

(02:06:29):
frozen some flight reductions now that the shutdown is over,
So Thanksgiving probably save for people who are going to travel.
Next week, Tony Cuthbert and I will travel to Las
Vegas for the Formula one race, the Las Vegas Grand Prix,
Champagne wishes and caviar dreams at the d and Circa,

(02:06:51):
and the F one Arcade in the Forum shops at Caesar's.
Will also make it over to Resorts World where they're
going to have one of the great race of all
time we may have access to, so stay tuned for
all of that next week. If you're into automotive and
our automotive companies are, Ford is coming back to Formula
one racing, so it can be Ford versus Ferrari all

(02:07:13):
over again, and Cadillac too, So there's obviously a big
Michigan connection. And Derek Stevens, who owns the D and
owns Circa, is a Detroiter and so that's how we
get our fire keepers on when we go to Las
Vegas next week. BBC and I stood right, I went
out in front and looked in the window of BBC

(02:07:34):
Radio in London. A few weeks ago. They're going to
apologize to Donald Trump for editing a documentary about him,
but they're not going to pay him millions of dollars.
He said he might sue BBC for that. They did
say they're sorry and they won't air it again. Is
that going to be good enough? We shall see. And
I was kind of wondering about this and finally somebody

(02:07:56):
has done something about it. Twenty two Republican lawmakers led
by Eric Nesbit, the Senate Minority leader who's running for governor.
They want the US Attorney General to have the Justice
Department oversee the elections in Michigan next year. Why because
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson wants to be governor

(02:08:17):
and since she's running the election, it's a conflict of interests.
Remember I kept poking around about that a few months ago. Well,
they're going to do something about it. Finally, I was
very curious about that situation. We never let the birthday
have a beautiful person pass without taking note. Former Secretary
of State Conda Leeza Rice a member at Augusta National

I don't think the President and Congresswoman elon Omar like
each other very much. She is the Muslim Democrat from
Minnesota and she put out an X yesterday. It's directed
straight at the President that said, unlike you, I can read,
and that's why I know what the Constitution says. Here's

(02:13:25):
what Donald Trump said, our president about elon Omar.

Speaker 9 (02:13:30):
And I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, who
where they don't have anything that on a police, they
don't have military, they don't have anything.

Speaker 23 (02:13:38):
All they have is crime. And she comes in and
tells us how to run our country.

Speaker 9 (02:13:42):
The Constitution says this, the constitution.

Speaker 23 (02:13:46):
The whole thing is crazy.

Speaker 8 (02:13:49):
Anthony Hudson is a candidate for governor, a Republican, and
he is going to have a march in Dearborn on
November eighteenth, to quote expose Dearborn for what it is.
That's according to an article by Craig Mauger in the
Detroit News. And mister Hudson joins us on our state
wide radio airwaves right now. Thank you for being here,

(02:14:10):
Welcome to the program.

Speaker 61 (02:14:12):
Hey, good morning, Thanks for having me. I'm actually in
Dearborn this morning, and I do want to set the
record straight. That is a misquote for me. I'm not
exposing anything. This is a unity walk that we are
trying to have here in Dearborn, where we're bringing communities together,
getting Muslims to get involved and walk with us in

(02:14:34):
peace so that we can calm the temperature about what's
going on down here in this city.

Speaker 8 (02:14:40):
You're from Grand Blank, correct, yes, sir, And what is
it about Dearborn that's got your attention.

Speaker 61 (02:14:50):
Well, I'm running for governor in this state. I should
be able to go to any city, in any township,
any county in this state without being feared. And there's
a lot of rhetoric about Deerborn right now. There's a
lot of talk about called a prayer. Music being played
five o'clock in the morning, six o'clock in the morning.

(02:15:12):
Citizens are saying that they're upset about it, they're tired
of hearing it. There's been women go on TikTok and
Facebook that they're being harassed and spit on and we
want to see this for ourselves. And we came down
this morning at four o'clock to Eastern Deerborn and set
outside the Deerborn Community Center and they had advertised a

(02:15:35):
call to prayer at six oh one, and you'd be
shocked to know that nothing played on a loud speaker
at six oh one. It's like the call to prayer
didn't even exist. But the community center was open. People
were going in, they were praying, they were coming out,
they were getting on with their day. But not a
single sound was played out of the speakers at six'

(02:15:55):
oh one this.

Speaker 8 (02:15:56):
Morning so what do you attribute.

Speaker 61 (02:15:58):
THAT i think that there's a lot of misinformation being
spread around by the lame duck, media mainstream media trying
to incite division Between dearborn and the folks that don't
live In. Dearborn they're trying to spread this rhetoric that
these call to prayers are happening early in the morning

(02:16:20):
before the noise ordinance is lifted at seven, am and
we came down here. Unannounced no one knew we were
coming down this, morning so it should have been business as,
usual and yet it was silent all across the entire.

Speaker 8 (02:16:35):
City so that argument or comparison to church, BELLS i,
mean as age. Old it's nothing new about. That there
are church, bells nobody complains much about. That but the
call to prayer is different, sound but kind of the
same sort of. Idea it's not people Practicing islamic faith

(02:16:57):
that bothers, you but would bother you and maybe a
lot of people is the idea That sharia law is
taking a foothold in The United states and maybe Even,
michigan maybe Even. Dearborn is that a bigger?

Speaker 61 (02:17:10):
CONCERN i, honestly, PERSONALLY i don't see any signs Of
sharia law down. Here we hear stories about, it you,
know we've we've looked Into shria.

Speaker 24 (02:17:24):
Law we come To.

Speaker 61 (02:17:25):
Dearborn there's liquor, stores there's gentlemen's, clubs there's, nightclubs there's
all these things. Here we spoke to a business owner
two days, ago a female business owner wearing regular clothes
barking orders at, men which would be a violation of
Their sharia, law and she was just she was a
bulldog in. THERE i, mean she knew exactly what she

(02:17:47):
wanted with her. Business she Is, muslim and everything she
was doing and saying and wearing would go Against sharia.
Law so, again we're here to the temperature and bring
unity to a community that lives within the boundaries Of.
Michigan AND i think when people can see it, firsthand

(02:18:10):
they can get a better perspective as to what life
is like In. DEARBORN i hear all the, stories we've
seen videos On, facebook TikTok YouTube of thousands of people
in the streets screaming death To, america death To. Israel
and the fact of it is is either those ARE
ai videos or those are videos that were filmed in other,

(02:18:32):
locations not even In, michigan and they're declaring that it Is.
Dearborn i've spoke to the chief of police, Here i've
talked to other city, officials and that rhetoric is not happening,
here or at least that's what they're telling. Me and
this is our third day In dearborn and we haven't seen.
Anything and you, Know i've gotten a lot of messaging

(02:18:54):
on social media that they're going to push back against our.
Walk you, KNOW i don't know if it's The islam
radicals or the terrorists in this town or, whatever but
we're expecting opposition when we walk through. Here but the
goal of our walk is to be peaceful and to
unify this community with the rest of the, state because

(02:19:16):
that is a concern amongst a lot of people who
don't live In, dearborn is as, governor what are you
going to do About? Dearborn if there's nothing to be,
done there's nothing to be. Done so we're doing our
research and we want to get involved in this community
and find out for.

Speaker 8 (02:19:30):
Ourselves three point thirty, Pm november, eighteenth the corner Of
Schaefer road In Michigan avenue is WHERE i understand that
march will. Start And i'll be interested to see what
you find. Out and, Congratulations i'm throwing your helmet in
the ring to run For. Governor Anthony hudson early this

(02:19:51):
morning In, Dearborn republican candidate for governor WITH.

(02:27:45):
Michigan well let's see you came Across John kennedy and
he was the chair of The West Michigan Policy, forum
which he is and he's on our radio, stage OUR
at AND t line right. Now thank you for being
here and welcome to the.

Speaker 63 (02:27:58):
Program, well thank, You Michael, patrick thanks for having me
on good.

Speaker 8 (02:28:03):
Morning thank you give us. Well first of, all is
it a burden to go around with the Name John?
Kennedy and not a negative? Burden certainly good that the
crown weighs heavy when you pronounce your name As John.
Kennedy starting when you're in, School what is your? Life

(02:28:25):
what is your? Career what is the way that you've
made your way in this? World?

Speaker 63 (02:28:31):
Yeah SO i have been a serial. ENTREPRENEUR i started
a number of, businesses basically The autocam. Companies one was
in the automotive, business which we built into a relatively
nice sized, business but from starting nineteen eighty eighty In,
michigan and it was our global headquarters and it was

(02:28:52):
we had a couple of thousand employees when we were
WHEN i sold the business In september of, fourteen and
the business is still exist and Now i've pivoted into
the med device. Space we Have Autocam medical and it's
a very Nice michigan business which has grown DRAMATICALLY uh without,

(02:29:14):
incentives by the, way IN UH uh basically In Grand,
rapids and we have four hundred employees In West, michigan
seven hundred in THE uh business you, KNOW uh around THE.

Speaker 8 (02:29:26):
Us so when you started that first, business did you
do so with incentives or how did you do you
begin something like?

Speaker 63 (02:29:34):
That, yeah well we. Did it was a it was
a startup and we actually wouldn't have been eligible for
incentives because most of the incentive programs require you to
be adding a you, know a large number of. Employees,
now we did receive uh incentives for building a plant In,

(02:29:55):
marshall which still exists in the automotives and but we,
were you, know we were barely able to make the
number of employees in the incentive because at the time
you had to have at least seventy five new. Employees
and you, know and that's quite frankly not the, way you,

(02:30:15):
know a small business. Grows even though we, had you,
know by the, end a couple of thousand employees WHEN
i sold the, business you, know we we don't, uh you,
know these the sore projects and mega the minimum cut
off with seventy five. Employees you had to add.

Speaker 8 (02:30:33):
The headline to the op ed you've written Is michigan
must ditch unfair and failed incentive. Schemes did you write
the word scheme or did they attach that on the?
Headline and is that an accurate?

Speaker 63 (02:30:46):
Word, WELL i DIDN'T i didn't write that, word but
it was it was. Picked AND I i don't know
that there's, schemes but they're certainly not very. Effective we've
done billions and billions of, incentives AS i say in the,

(02:31:06):
editorial but we really haven't gotten the. Jobs the, example you,
know we spent twenty billion dollars over the last you,
know twenty some years doing, incentives and we have less
employment than we had when we started those.

Speaker 5 (02:31:21):
Incentives so this isn't.

Speaker 63 (02:31:23):
Effective SO i think what we have to look at
in the state is what does what makes it conducive
for businesses to grow and prosper In. Michigan and you
have to look at things like, regulation right to, work
some of those things which are reasons why businesses come
to a place where it looks inviting for businesses to

(02:31:44):
build and.

Speaker 8 (02:31:45):
Grow your article that you've written is intriguing to me
because when someone's listening right, now including, myself they, say, oh,
here the state Of michigan gave these. Incentives they gave
away this money to you, know sort of buy their
way to. Prosperity that money is my, money isn't? It
and your, money and anyone who's.

Speaker 63 (02:32:03):
Listening, ABSOLUTELY i think that's one of the terrible. Things
and so you, know And I'm i'm not opposed to
the companies that we've brought here and, etcetera and the
ones that have added the employees that they promised and.
ETCEA i think we need to be doing everything we
can to make it hospitable for businesses to come. Here

(02:32:25):
but who pays for? Incentives it's all of the people
that are still, here and you, Know Quay, frankie it's
small and medium sized businesses who aren't often eligible for
those same.

Speaker 8 (02:32:35):
Incentives is there a way to sort of figures so
that we can bring it down to our? Level how
much AM i? Paying how much have families of, four for,
instance paid on these?

Speaker 63 (02:32:49):
Boondoggles eight thousand, dollars you, know is how much the
incentives that costs the average.

Speaker 37 (02:32:57):
Citizen so turn on and.

Speaker 63 (02:33:00):
Be not very. High you, know we can look at
auto jobs and we have half the auto jobs that
we had when we started doing these, incentives which a
lot of the incentives And i'm, not once, Again i'm
not being critical of the, companies but a lot of
the incentives have been to retain and grow automotive, jobs you,

(02:33:21):
know particularly in THE ev, transition and we have half
the jobs that you know we we when we started
doing this in very large.

Speaker 8 (02:33:32):
Numbers John kennedy is chair of The West Michigan Policy.
Forum If michigan doesn't have incentive programs that are more,
successful won't other? States and do not other states already do?
It and if, so are they more? Successful and?

Speaker 41 (02:33:46):
Why?

Speaker 63 (02:33:48):
WELL i think that they've the other states do do,
Incentives and so that's always the catch phrase that everyone.
Uses And i'm not saying a an incentive for every
business would be eligible that for adding jobs and adding
employment and adding wages would be necessarily. Bad it certainly

(02:34:10):
we'd be better than what we're. Doing but if you
look at those other, states they've done other things to
make the business you, know business climate more hospitable to
growth and for the businesses to. Prosper and we certainly
before we start talking about, incentives which is at best
the icing on the, cake what we need to do
is make sure that our environment of low, taxes low,

(02:34:34):
regulation et, cetera is the best for businesses to come.

Speaker 8 (02:34:38):
Here, okay those states maybe have right to work, status.

Speaker 63 (02:34:46):
Right to work would be a big. One it's in
the top five for when you look at there's a
magazine that does you, know business fracsion and they rank
what the factors, are and it's always in the top.

Speaker 5 (02:34:58):
Five right to, work.

Speaker 8 (02:35:01):
And we had, it and then When Governor whittmer got
elected did away with, it right right, Right, okay spelled
it right out. There the chair of The West Michigan Policy,
Forum John, Kennedy, well thank you for your investment In
michigan and your. Decisions by the, way the business you,
sold did it stay?

Speaker 63 (02:35:20):
Here, yeah it's still.

Speaker 8 (02:35:23):
Here, okay look at. That a man who created jobs
and affected lives and is still doing. So Grand rapids
the chair of The West Michigan Policy, forum and he
brought the receipts as they, say he's the chair of
the forum. Board there It's Michael Patrick SHIELDS, Wtkg Grand
rapids and radio stations across the state Of. Michigan have

up Like john, McCain did you, Know like why didn't
anybody step up and Say i'm going to run in the.

It's, hard it would be hard for me disagree with.
YOU i, mean let me say, THIS i am enormous

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
