Speaker 1 (00:08):
Michael Patrick Shields Formula one Las Vegas on radio stations
all across Michigan and worldwide at miibigshow dot com. Mark Rushbrook,
We've been talking about you for days with all of
our automotive experts like Paul Eisenstein and Jeff Gilbert and
lots of others, and they all told us to expect
a really dynamic fella who is also a racer at

(00:29):
hearts and also works for a racer at heart at
Ford Motor Company or the global director of Ford Racing.
And we're here at Formula one and one year from now,
as qualifying is starting just as we speak, you won't
be standing here talking to me, will you.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
No. We've been working with Red Bull as a great
partner to develop a new power unit for Formula one
for twenty twenty six, so a lot of hard work
over these last three years.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
It's all going to come together very quickly.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Now. The rules don't allow us to go will track
at all on twenty twenty five, but we can first
go on the track January twenty sixth at Barcelona. We
cannot wait until that point, but then it's testing in
Barcelona two weeks later. Testa by rain a week later, later,
testing by rain two weeks later. We're racing in Melbourne

(01:17):
in early March. So a lot is going to happen
over these next three or four months to do all
the final preparation to be ready for that first race
and for.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
The casual fan of F one and of course we
love Ford Motor Company. Of course it is it again,
the Ford versus Ferrari.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, everywhere we race, we want to go against the
best manufacturers in the world, and internally we do that
in sportscar racing today against Ferrari and many other great manufacturers.
But here in Formula one, of course Ferrari is a
is a force to be reckoned with, but there's a
lot of other great manufacturers here as well, and we're
just excited to be rejoining the Formula one grade.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
It's a big investment, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Well, depending on how you come into Formula one, it
can be different sized investment. The way that we've chosen
to do it as a partner with Red Bull, it's
an efficient investment in the sense that we're not owning
a team, we're not paying every penny for anything that
gets done.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
But in this.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Partnership with Red Bull We're able to focus where we
believe we truly can contribute technically and also where we
can learn to help make our road cars and trucks
even better. So again, Red Bulls have been a fantastic
partner and they just want to win races.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
We want to win races and a wait to go
racing with them.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
How much pressure is there on you in season one
with Ford involvement and what's a realistic expectation in terms
of winning.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, every time you go to the race track, it
doesn't matter what the series is, you go there with
the intention to win. We simply do not want to
be on the track just to be on the track.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
We want to be on the track with the intention
to win.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
We know the magnitude of this challenge in all these
different global series, but especially.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
A Fortula one. It is a massive challenge.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
It's a massive undertaking, especially with this power unit program.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
We've read Bulling Forward. It started from nothing, it started.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
From scratch three and a half years ago, so a
lot of pressure to deliver. We're not using that as
an excuse, right. Our attention is to get on the
track to win. We know it's going to be tough
to start the season. We'll see where we stack up.
If we have any issues, we're certainly going to be
addressing them and fighting.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
For the wins.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
At Ford Motor Company, are you selling cars to fund
the racing or racing to sell cars?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, we're leaning into our heritage, our roots. So Ford
Racing Henry Ford one is racing nineteen oh one with
sweet stakes, found the company in nineteen oh three, looking
racing for almost one hundred and twenty five years now.
But we don't just race the race. I mean, yes,
we race to win, but we race to have that
innovation and tech transfer to make our cars and trucks
better or passionate. We use the spectacle of racing to

(03:50):
engage fans for it, and our performance vehicles are very
profitable for us, So there is a direct tie from
what we do to the race track. So the passion
that we put into products that are profitable that customers
want to put in their garage in their driveway.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
You're a chief executive officer as a racer at heart,
that probably helps you in the investment that's necessary.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
I suppose yes and no, absolutely. Jim Farley's a racer.
I'm a racer.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
He and I race together, but again, we have to
be responsible. It's not just approving racing programs to go racing.
Jim is Yes, he's a car guy, he's a racer,
but he's also an incredible leader, business leader, visionary for that,
and marketing expert with everything that he's done in his career.

(04:38):
So I believe that we're using racing for the right
reasons in a very responsible way to help the company.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
If they said today, you know you started an Attractors
as a farmer, as I understand it, we need you
tonight to get out here. Could you get behind the
wheel of one of these vehicles and do it?

Speaker 3 (04:55):
So I absolutely love racing.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
I've been racing for thirty years at the grass level
and I definitely enjoy that. And I've driven a lot
of different cars, but I've not driven something quite at
the Formula one level, so I'm not sure I could
do the car justice.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Tell us if you would a preview of what you're
going to show us at the Detroit Auto Show in
January at the amazing development there in Corktown. There the
train station which was a dilapidated, horrible building which is
now a showplace.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, what Michigan Central Station and everything that's been done
to bring it back and to bring the city back
with it. It's a very touch a point of prime
for our company, for our city, and we cannot wait
until January fifteenth. So we'll be talking a lot about
Ford Racing and everything that we are doing in racing.

(05:44):
We will also be talking about what Ford Racing is
is a business and with our performance vehicles. We'll be
talking about the F one program of course, our off
road racing, our sports car racing, NASCAR, nh Area, everything,
but most importantly, we'll have Formula one team for Red
Bull Racing and Racing Bulls there with us to show
the livery of their cars, to talk about the new

(06:06):
power unit that we've developed together, and we're.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Doing it in our hometown.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
We're going to be able to do it in front
of our employees, which means so much to me to have.
There's been such a positive reaction from all the employees
at Ford Motor Company when.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
We announced doing our season launch there. They're all asking
how do they get down there? So we can't wait
to have this.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
How do you balance the visibility of Red Bull versus
Ford Motor Company in that partnership.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, I do believe we are great partners and part
of why we wanted to partner them is to win races,
but also because they are such a powerhouse in media
and the story they're able to tell, the eyeballs they're
able to attract, but they also see the value that
Forward brings to them with what Ford is as a brand,
especially in the United States, and that's the way we're

(06:54):
approaching it. We met with them again this morning. We
meet with them regularly about how do we take.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Full of theage of this partnership. We've been building it.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Just as we've been advancing the power unit in these
last three years, we've been advancing the marketing relationship and.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
That will continue though through part that season launched.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
With us and Tell storytelling throughout twenty six and all.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Of this partnerships.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I know you're busy, but just give us a ten
second preview of each of your drivers that you presumably
were involved in selecting the.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Drivers from Fortula one. They're not announced yet, so I
can't yet, come on. I wish I could. There's gossip though, well,
stay tuned. There's always gossip, all right.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
And you live in Michigan for decades now, I think, right,
how do you like life there? And your life now
is going to be in places like Monaco and Abu
Dhabi and around the world. I suspect, yeah, Well, I
grew up in Pennsylvania.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
I moved to Michigan in nineteen eighty nine for grad
school and to be in the auto industry. Not state
in Michigan ever since. I absolutely loved living there. It
is a great state to live in. I love working
at Ford Motor Company. She's a fantastic life, wonderful son
that enjoyed this with me. My son and I race together,
so he's in here and in that. I don't think

(08:08):
he really had a choice growing up in the house
that he did. But yeah, we love what we're able
to do in Michigan.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
You don't mind moving from Glasshouse apparently to another location
in Dearborn.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Is that where you're based.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Well, we're in a separate building and just on the
outskirts of the Forward campus. We love what the new
Ford World Headquarters is with the investment that the company
has made for its employees. It is a point of
pride for me and for every Ford employee to walk
through that building and it's an incredible building that a

(08:42):
lot of great employees are going to get to work in.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Did you realize how exciting it is to stand here
right now with you and hear the sound, the musical
sound of those vehicles humming down the course.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
Oh? Absolutely, we love the sound. We can't wait until
what's a red bull for power Unit? An Tony say
amen to that? Thank you very much, thank you,
