In a world where movies rely onmarketing more than ever to connect with audiences,
one podcast aims to make sense ofit all. This is movies and
Marketing. Next Saturday Nights, where'resending you that to the future? Go
ahead, make my day? Howabout now you're crazy Dutch past. What

(00:27):
we've got here is failure, youmill gate take the ground, where as
fresh all of pow for we mightas well. Good time. I am
an FBI agent. It's that timeagain. It's here, the moment has

(00:48):
arrived. What am I talking about? What is happening? Well, as
the title of the podcast says,we are recording this episode the Summer movie
Draft. Isn't it great when thetitle of the episode and what we talk
about in the episode actually line up. Yeah, unlike there's a lot of
podcasts out there that do not dothat. You might find one on our

(01:11):
channel here, not too long inthe future. One day. It's true,
it could happen. It could happen, but not here and not today.
So this is an annual tradition onthe Movies and Marketing podcasts where we
compete to see who can better predictthe movies that will earn the most dough

(01:32):
meaning Cheddar or de Naro, notRobert de Naro, because it is about
movies, but it's not about himat the summer box office. Yeah,
you're talking about that sweet green thatmoney, right, mm hmmmm hm.
So we've been doing this little competitionsince way back in twenty sixteen. The

(01:52):
series currently stands at two and five, with Patrick riding a four year winning
streak. That streak continue this yearare come crumbling down? We will soon
find out. But before we diveinto the draft, let's go over a
few quick rules of the game.Patrick, you want to hit us up

(02:13):
with some rules. Yeah, soeach team drafts seven movies. So Shad
drafts seven. I draft seven. We're the two teams, just in case
it wasn't hot, are the teams? Yeah, So the team whose movies
have the highest combined domestic box officetotal at the end of the summer wins,
wins the prize, wins the championshipbelt. People are probably wondering,

(02:36):
you say, the end of thesummer, what's the summer? How do
we define the summer movie season. That's a great question, listener, whatever
your name may be. Here onMoMA, we define summer movies as anything
released in the US theaters, sodomestic from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day

(02:57):
weekend, which this year is Maytwenty fourth through August thirtieth, So that
fluctuates a little bit each year, but that's what it is this year.
That means movies such as The FallGuy and Kingdom of the Planet of the
Apes are not eligible because they cameout just before that. No damn dirty
apes. No if with Ryan Reynolds, you can't grab that one. Patrick

(03:21):
got a luck if only if onlyone final rule, only theatrical releases.
Sorry, streaming services, we can'tverify your numbers, so you are out
of this competition. We're just talkingabout movies released in movie theaters. We
also have a few bonuses we're gonnathrow into the mix that give us a

(03:42):
chance to earn some extra green andpotentially turn the tides a little bit.
We won't get into the specifics ofthose right now, but you can find
them in the show notes page forthis podcast on Speaking human dot com.
Yeah, if you do a searchfor Summer Movie Draft twenty twenty four,
that'll pop up towards the top ofthe search list there on the website,

(04:02):
and then you know, the shownotes page will be updated and you can
see what those bonuses look like. They're actually pretty fun this year. Yeah,
we got some good ones in there, and you'll be able to see
all the movies we drafted that you'reabout to find out. So all that
being said, let's get to thedraft. Patrick. All right, just
so the listeners know, if youhaven't listened to previous episodes, maybe you

(04:26):
have. You get this as thewinner from last year's competition and so many
I can't keep count anymore. Didyou win last year? I forget I
don't even remember who won. It'sso hard to remember how many times I've
won. But because I won lastyear, at the very least, I
get to choose what we call asour destiny, my destiny, I should

(04:48):
say. So I get to eitherpick the first in the draft and then
pick four after that, or Iget to pick two and three consecutively and
skip number one and give that toShaft. So it's a strategic choice here.
Yeah, so what are you gonnado? Patrick? It's a big
moment for you. So I thinkI'm gonna pick the first one. No,

(05:11):
I'm just kidding. Uh No,I you know, this year,
like last year. I think I'mgonna pick two and three, so that
means you get the first pick,Shad, all right, the first pick
falling squarely on my shoulders because youcan't handle it, the pressure being too

(05:31):
much for you. I will takethis burden from you. I'm gonna grab
it this year, and for thefirst pick, I'm gonna take your boy,
your son, your other son,Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and Wolverine,
Eye Peanut. I'm gonna need youto come with me right now. Look,
lady, I'm not interested. Allright, Well, I'm sort of

(05:54):
on the tick tick, So upsy, Daisy, I want to talk about
what's haunting you? Or should wewait for a third act flashback? Uh?
This is gonna be the number onemovie of the summer. The reason

(06:15):
I think this, I think thisis gonna be one last big party for
the superhero movie. It's our onlysuperhero movie this summer. Got a crossover.
You know, you got Deadpool, you got Wolverine, you got Marvel
this superhero series. You know,Deadpool proven successful. We've got two movies
that have already made over three hundredmillion and kind of has its cake and
eat it too. It's a superheromovie. But it also makes fun of

(06:38):
superhero movies. So even if you'resick of superhero movies, you're kind of
like, Ah, this Deadpool thing, it's kind of funny. Yeah,
i'd be lying to say that that'snot a good pick. But I think
you're dead wrong. Bro, likeDeadpool, you're dead wrong. And really
you're a hypocrite because you always saysuperhero movies they're done, and yet you

(07:00):
picked probably what I would have pickedif I was going number one, the
last one. It's the last superheromovie. It's the last one to deliver
the big you know, it's theblowout, some big money, and then
they're all just gonna fizzle out anddie from here, you think. So
they're gonna wither up and disappear overthe next five years. They won't.
They won't make them anymore. Eitherthat or they'll just come back and,

(07:21):
you know, take over our livesonce again, after this brief phase where
they were like not as big asthey were for one small moment. Yeah,
I think this is it. Ithink I'm going to so I get
the next two picks. Yeah, you're up on two and three. Yeah,
I think I'm going to choose formy number two slot or for my

(07:41):
number one slot, but the numbertwo slot overall, I'm gonna choose inside
Out too. Riley's like requires moresophisticated emotions than all of you. You
can't just bottle us up. Weare suppressed emotion Operation New Riley begin with

(08:03):
you aren't path yet the wor wellthat's a preview of the next ten years
kind of apropos, you know, inside Out to the number two slot.
Overall, I just think this one'sbound to make money, you know,
number one, inside Out one,or it was just called inside Out at
the time. Maybe over three hundredand fifty million dollars domestic, and I

(08:26):
know we don't count it, butit made almost a billion dollars globally.
So I think that, you know, just this movie has that thing.
It's an animated film, and that'swhat you need in the summertime, you
need something for the family. SoI think this movie's gonna really be right
up there with your Deadpool and Wolverine. Maybe, I don't know, we'll

(08:46):
see I mean inside Out, belovedmovie, one of our favorite Pixar movies.
In my family, we'll be outto see this one. Unfortunately for
you, Patrick. The heyday ofPixar's over. The heyday of Disney at
the movie theater is probably over too. You know. The last Pixar movie

(09:07):
to do big money Toy Story fourin twenty nineteen. Yeah, dudn't.
It's a while, didn't I havethat pick? I think I had that
pick. I think you had TheLion King that year and I had Toy
Story four. Lion King beat itout. You might be right, but
I think there's still, you know, for good quality animation, there's still
an audience for that. And inthe summertime, for sure, something that

(09:28):
the parents can take their children too, you know, something that's family friendly,
because they're not gonna be taking themin a dead poem Wolverine. That's
for sure, that's true. Sonumber three, Yeah, so number three,
I think I'm gonna take what areyou taking? You know? I
think I'm gonna take a Quiet Place? Day one? So this movie,

(10:09):
you know, Quiet Place, it'sthe third installment. Third one is kind
of a prequel. But the reasonwhy I'm going to pick this is it's
got a good track record. Youknow, it'll make it probably at least
the average of one hundred and seventyfive million. But here's the thing.
Prequels in general, like good ones, tend to earn a lot. So
this is my reasoning behind this.Minions earned over three hundred million and Rogue

(10:33):
one over five hundred million, andthe top five of all prequels generally earn
over three hundred million. So Ithink this is a winner, especially because
I know that people liked the firsttwo movies, so even though it doesn't
have the same actors, I thinkit'll do well. Yeah. I think
the concept is what sells these moviesmore than who's in it. I feel

(10:54):
like the just the idea, theattention it creates. It's my favorite trailer
I think I've seen so far thisyear. It really gets you excited to
see the movie. That being said, it's a great pick. You just
took it too early in the draft. This won't be the number three movie
the summer. Maybe it's number four, maybe it's number five. But taking
a number three huge mistake on yourpart. We all make mistakes, but

(11:18):
not as big as your next pick, because I know that's gonna be a
huge mistake. Whatever it is,nice segue. In fact, it's not,
it's the movie you should have picked. Despicable Me four is my next
pick. I know you love you, go out say it. Yeah,

(11:39):
of course he loves you. Hejust he just doesn't shoot on his face
or with his body language. Rightfor Junior, Come on, the Minions
brand is unstoppable. Like you werejust talking about the Minions. The last
movie, Minions, when it wasout a couple of years ago, did
three hundred and seventy two million dollars. Now, Despicable Me is not you

(12:00):
know, Minions, but they're init. Kids just want to go see
those Minions. This could very wellbe the number one movie of the summer,
and you just gifted it to meat number four. You gave it,
You handed it to me on aplatter. See. Here's where you
and I disagree, because this storyis done. What the story of grew
reluctantly. I chose Minions, Okay, but the grow nobody cares about grew.

(12:24):
They care about those little yellow bananalooking They just care about those little
guys. Right, So nobody wantsanother one of these, And I think
that that's your biggest mistake. Ithink nobody's gonna go see this. I
think it's gonna make one hundred dollars. That's office. Just tell that to
the gentle minions. All right, well then, uh so, knowing that

(12:46):
you picked that, I think I'mgonna go ahead and steal something that I
know is very near and dear toyour heart. Furiosa a Mad Max saga
always be wool, but to gethome Furiosa for the world for me.

(13:26):
I know that you love Fury Roador Furry Road, depending on which theater
you saw it in. I lovethem both. Yeah, I love them
both. Now the documentary series aboutfurries, but Furiosa. Here's why I'll
take this one word style Fury Road. You know it did over one hundred
and fifty million. All that aside. This movie has style, and people

(13:46):
love love the Mad Max series,so I think that's why it'll do well.
People do love this series, butgeneral audiences, I don't know if
they do. You know you talkedabout Fury Making about one hundred and fifty
million. That was a movie thatpeople called one of the best action movies
ever, had great reviews across theboard, got nominated for Oscars, and

(14:07):
the best it could do was likeone hundred and fifty million. How's this
movie gonna do better than that Idon't think it's gonna do better. I
think it's gonna do about the same, which is okay, there's to me
in my opinion. We often jokeevery year about it being bleak, like
we're like where are all the movies? But I feel like this movie this
year, this summer is kind oflike that where I think we picked them

(14:30):
all on like the first four.Yeah, you know, Mad Max isn't
a bad pick, but it's justlike, I don't know if it's gonna
get four or five hundred million, you know what I mean. It's no
Barbie. No at the tier we'reat now. I don't know if you're
gonna see a lot of I don'tknow if you're gonna see seven movies making
three hundred million dollars this summer.I could be wrong, we could be

(14:50):
surprised, but doesn't look like itfrom where I'm sitting. Maybe Furiosa is
this year's Barbie. Think about it? An empowered fe email actor, right,
and an apocalypse like Oppenheimer. Youknow, they combined it into one
movie this summer, So it's likeBarbenheimer, it's like me, and it's
got like a popular dude actor ina supporting role. Yeah, with great

(15:15):
abs. Yeah, you never know, you know, you never know.
Maybe this will kick it up anotch. Maybe all the love for Fury
Road will like kick this one intooverdrive. I hope. So I want
to see it. It's a staple. It is a staple, and it's
a unique vision. So number sixthis is me. I'm gonna tell you

(15:37):
about another unique vision, a visionthat I have, and that's a vision
where the movie Twisters does major businessthis summer. You don't face your fears,
You're right them. There are manymovies this summer that can play to

(15:58):
all audiences. I'm talking kids,I'm talking teens, I'm talking mom,
Grandma. You can take them allto see Twisters. This could be that
movie gives it that kind of potentialbreakout, you know, where everybody can
go see it. That's why Ithink Twisters could end up being that surprise
hit of the summer. Yeah,I think you're I think you're wrong.

(16:19):
Here's why I'll tell you that Ithink you're wrong. Here, you're betting
on trauma. You know, thereare so many people who have dealt with
tornadoes or as they just like tocalm Twisters because they're they're really making light
of other people's despair and sadness andtrauma that they've experienced in life from tornadoes,

(16:42):
you know, those deadly things thatactually do kill people, and you're
betting on that. I almost wantto hop off the podcast right now thinking
about how trivial you've made, youknow, the Hollywood, I don't know,
really really put it on me.Yeah, like you're just so dark,

(17:06):
shad, I didn't make the film. This is a dark pick.
It's a dark pick. What aboutall the people who died in car accidents?
Furiosa? Yeah, furiosa, theApocalypse, all the people that died
in the Apocalypse. No, inall seriousness, it's just been done so
many times, you know it almostthis movie trailer feels like Shark Nato.

(17:26):
It feels like a Shark Nato sciFi channel, really bad, nothing like
that. Yeah, I think itis. There's no good actors in it.
Yeah, it's got Glenn Pale, rising star. I think it's got
some up and coming actors. It'sgot something, you know, something We
all a fear, we can allrelate to weather. I mean, it
could be this year's day after tomorrow, or it could be twenty twelve,

(17:49):
that movie, which I think wasa disaster. It was a disaster movie,
and also I'm pretty sure a disasterin the box office. I think
so too. With all that said, I think my next pick, which
is the seventh overall pick, I'mgonna go with bad Boys four Ride or
Die and Reggie you eat my snacks? No, sir, you ate my

(18:11):
snacks? Didn't you need to geta job? I'm a us marina,
sir, we didn't you need todeploy? N Look, we now have
evidence that the late Captain Conrad Howardof Miami PD was working directly with drug
cartels for years. You Ride orDie, Man, And I think I'm
gonna pick this, you know, mainly because all right, if you look

(18:32):
at it, just historically, firstone did sixty five million. Again,
this is over decades, right, sixty five million. Second one did one
hundred and thirty eight million, easydoubling over double. Third one did two
hundred and six million, which wasjust a couple of years ago. Now
you got four. I think it'sgoing to track to do probably at least
two hundred million. So in myopinion, it's a good seventh overall pick

(18:57):
because it's still in that. Youknow, it's sub three hundred potentially,
but over at least two hundred million. I can't believe Bad Boys three made
that much money. Yeah, that'sshocking to me. But I think you're
wrong because it's too soon. It'stoo soon after Bad Boys three. I

(19:18):
think the space between Bad Boys twoand Bad Boys three was built up anticipation.
People were like, oh, Iwant to see these guys together again.
Now it's just been a couple ofyears. People have seen it already.
You know, these guys are justokay. They were old and now
they're a little bit older. Idon't think there's enough of that built up
anticipation for this one. So it'llmake some money, but I don't know.

(19:41):
I don't know about this one.And the trailer looks pretty bad in
my opinion. Yeah, it does. But like, let's take Lethal Weapon,
which had four. You did havea little bit more spacing between three
and four, so you had almostsix years there, and it dropped a
little bit. Four didn't do aswell as three. That's kind of hard.
That's what that's the thing about asequel like that. When you get

(20:03):
into the fourth one, I don'texpect it to necessarily do as much.
So let's say three did two hundredand six million. I think this will
probably cap probably around two hundred million, but that's nothing to sneeze at.
They're there to ride or die.Man ride or die. I mean it
could die, or it could ride, it could ride. I'm slightly worried
about this pick because two hundred millionat number seven or more than that,

(20:27):
I mean, this could be agood value pick for you. Yeah,
I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful. Sowhat do you got for number eight?
The number eight pick? What areyou? What are you gonna choose here?
I'm going back to the animated wellonce again, and I'm taking the
Garfield movie. Oh god, yep, I'm doing it. The first animated

(20:48):
movie of the summer, dropping onMemorial Day weekend. This could make one
hundred million without Garfield getting out ofbed. I apologize in advance. The
eating you're about to see will notbe pretty. And if you have young
children, this would be a goodtime for them to leave the room.
Do you have a jump to tray? I've never jumped? Is that the
really? Where hody? You thinkhe'd see that coming? The Garfield movie?

(21:19):
Money in my pocket? Yeah, okay, you know, if I'm
in a poke a hole here,I'll use the quote of Bill Murray in
Zombieland when they asked him as hewas dying, what was his biggest regret,
and he said, Garfield. AndI think this is going to be
your biggest regret in this draft,Garfield, because this movie, you say

(21:40):
you going back to the animated, well, is that well dry? I
think you could have chosen anything elseand that would have been better. You
could have literally animated the movies themselvesand it still would have done better than
this movie's gonna do. What's yourbeef with Garfield? He's steal your lasagna
or something. I mean, hejust took advance of Odie way too many
times. And Odie's my boy,you know. I mean, I agree,

(22:04):
Odie's the best Garfield character. Butthis, you know, this movie
just animated money first one of theSummer, got three weeks before Inside Out,
just families flocking to it. Parentsknow the ip. Just open it
up, throw that money out, give it to me, put it on
my team. Yeah, you mightbe right. Maybe get some cheddar from

(22:25):
that. All right, well, then let's see I will take for number
nine. I will take I'll takethe watchers. You have five seconds before
the door is sealed. Five fourthree two. What is happening? What

(22:45):
is this place? I don't meanto scare you, but we haven't much
time. It's not wise to keepthem waiting. Oh and here's why,
I'll give you one reason. Hope, just hope. I'm hoping that night.
Shyamalan's daughter is Shanna Shamalan. Man. That's a real hard time twister.

(23:06):
Yeah, tongue twister of her name. I hope you know she doesn't
let me die. I mean she'sbeen doing stuff. You know. She
did Old also not a great movie, but you know, she did The
Servant on Apple TV. So Ithink she's got she's starting to get her
legs. She's putting together some goodstories. So maybe this will be a
good one. So I'm hoping. The watchers says, it looks it's got
a good trailer. And if there'sanything that I know about movies, it's

(23:30):
the trailer sells it. Well,we always know that trail is all that
matters, right, Yeah, Imean even the DUTs, it sells it.
So this is an interesting pick.I think you might get some young
people, you might get some horrorfans, but I think most people won't
be watching. I'll be shocked ifthis one goes past the fifty million mark.

(23:52):
Oh okay, all right, wellI have it edit at a probably
about one hundred and twenty five.Oh well, okay, So you think
it's it's breaking out, it's goingI think so. I think I think
it has that potential because of thatthriller horror dynamic, you know that's happening.
I think you're going to get theteens, You're gonna get the people

(24:14):
who are like kind of starving forthat kind of movie. Bet Nana Shamalan.
Yeah, that's not a great way. It's a risky proposition. It's
usually not a great sign nowadays. But it's boom or bust. It's boom
or bust. Yeah, all right, number ten. Pick I'm gonna take
laying down a little bit of arisky bet and seeing if it pays off.

(24:37):
But the maker of this film alsolaid down a risky bet for all
of America. So this is theleast I can do. I'm taking Horizon
an American saga. Chapter one, that's right, chapter one, the first
one. These people think they're toughenough, smart, enough. I mean

(25:00):
themough all this will be there someday, there's don't army of this earth.
It's going to stop those wagons cominga little as their wanting, why am

(25:25):
I taking this costner? And oneword, really Yellowstone. We can get
some of those Yellowstone people, allthose people who watch that show, who
love that show, which have tonumber in the I don't know tens of
millions. Ah, get some ofthem out to theaters. You know,
this movie can make some good money. It can be the tenth highest grossing

(25:49):
movie of the summer. I think, yeah, I mean that's big ambitions,
right, you know, I'm notlie. I love me some costner
we've had. I mean I pickedtwo of those the world, right,
yeah, I mean the Postman.I mean there's just he's got a lot

(26:10):
of good movies, you know, and a lot of people either love or
hate him as an actor and viceversa. Even with the movies that he's
in. You know that they'll saythe same thing. I think this isn't
a great pick. I think, for one, there's two of these movies
coming out in the summer. Youthink I should have picked Chapter two.
I think you should have picked Chaptertwo because then you would at least know

(26:32):
your demise, you know what Imean, I don't want to know my
demise. I don't want to seewhat's coming. I just think it's gonna
be too long, and I don'tknow if people are willing to invest,
they're going to see chapter one,They're and be like, I'm gonna have
to go see another one of thesemovies. Whereas by chapter two, you've
you know, you've got to buildan audience. Either way, you're losing
because it's not gonna do very well. But you know, at least at

(26:52):
that point you could be like, well, you know, I picked chapter
two, so we all know.Having part one or chapter one, you
know, part one, part twoin the title has not been a good
sign most of the time, andan American saga, chapter one, horiz
it's the worst title of the summer. Would I would have to argue,
I mean, there's a lot there. It's a lot going on there.

(27:15):
You might even argue that they triedto take advantage of like john Wick chapter
one, Chapter two. I mean, you know, like this is not
going to be john Wick. BroWell, I think they wanted people to
know, you know, Horizon, that's telling you Okay, it's like a
Western an American saga. You mightbe like, is this a German saga?
No American? And then you're like, will there be multiple chapters?

(27:40):
Yes, this is one stacked withstars. Yeah, and it feels like
a history lesson. You know, nobody wants to be in high school again.
Costa is gonna tell us the storyof how the West made us who
we are today. Yeah. Andif you weren't sure, you're going to
check your syllabus and you're gonna haveto go to class, read chapter one,
and then come back and we'll readchapter two tomorrow. And you'll do

(28:03):
this all with the Academy Award winningdirector of Dances with Wolves. Yeah to
Tanka, to Tanka, good luckwith that one. Number eleven, my
number eleven overall pick. I'm gonnapick Trap. This whole concert to Trap,
watching all the exits, checking everyonethat leaves. There's no way to

(28:27):
get out of here, so I'mgone my last pick in this pick where
I'm picking the father daughter duo tosave me this summer in these two double
Shamalan double Shamalan reasoning. Here's whatI'll just say it. Hope. I'm
hoping don't let me down. MNight, Shamalan, M night. Come

(28:51):
on, man, you need toshow me that you are still the master
of the twist, still master ofappealing to our sixth sense. Let me
say that I thought you were tryingto think of something other than the twist,
and you're like, I can't.He's not the master of a lot
of things lately, but he's trying. You know, he keeps making movies.

(29:11):
Some of them are duds, andby some I mean probably a majority
of them at this point. ButI have a lot of hope and it's
Trap. Trap has another fantastic trailer, can't live up to it. I
cannot believe you're double betting on theShamalan family in the summer movie draft.
This is amazing. Why is thisa bad pick? Shamalan? His last

(29:34):
two movies, Old and Knock atthe Cabin both made less than fifty million.
Yeah, so you're hoping, youknow, this is one of his
breakouts, one of his ones, you know, like a split or the
sixth sense, you know, oneof those ones that comes along every ten
years that makes some big money.Well, I would also defend that both

(29:56):
of those movies came out after twentytwenty, So we have had like three
really solid summers of weirdness going onafter the pandemic. So Knock at the
cabin Hold I think suffered from thata little bit. So I think this
one's these are going to do alittle bit better or the same. Did

(30:17):
you know that this summer is alsoafter twenty twenty. Yeah, but I
think we're out of the storm,a little bit out of it, you
know what I mean, Like thePerfect Storm with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg.
Yeah, we're a little bit outsideof that storm. We can see
the giant wave and we're like,it's not going to hit us, or
it already hit us. It hitus. Yeah, we already got pumbled.

(30:38):
Okay, we definitely got pumbled bythat. And now we're like,
oh, you know, are wedead? Maybe we're dead. I don't
know. Benton, big Bet andDeep on the Shamalaans number twelve, I'm
going to go with alien Romulus. That's right, Romulus. They have been

(30:59):
around four a very long time, for centuries, and they've been looking for
us for just as long. Now, I know what you're thinking, do
you alien? This franchise slimping alittle bit, but this one looks like

(31:22):
a back to basics alien horror movie, and it could restore this franchise to
greatness. I think this comes outin August. It's got a little room
to move, and I feel likethe floor on an Alien movie isn't too
bad. Even Alien Covenant, whichpeople didn't like that much, made seventy
five million, which I'll take itthe twelve spot. It's not too bad

(31:42):
here. But I think this isgonna do even better. People are gonna
love it in Imax. They're gonnabe like, oh, this is kind
of scary. We're gonna get somehorror fans in Alien It's back. People
are gonna be romulusing all August.I hope that you're right. I think
the Alien franchise it's quality for themost part, even the ones that people

(32:02):
hated, I like them all.I liked Prometheus, and Prometheus had a
lot of holes. You know.I know a lot of people hated certain
elements to those movies even coming it, but I think, you know again,
I really hope that it can holdup and stand its ground if you
will. Here's why I think itwill fail. The name. I hate
these names, Romulus. I meancome on, nobody, this is what

(32:30):
this is the thing. Okay,if you're getting back to the basics,
really get back to the basics.I mean, at least Alien Aliens there
was like something about it, youknow, they were simple Romulus. This
new naming convention they've got going onnow, I don't think it works,
and I don't think people are fooledby that. I think they're like Romulus.

(32:51):
I'm not going to Romulus my wayinto that theater. I'll tell you
that much. You got something here, I'll tell you that much. I
would like it more if it waslike Alien Aliens. Those are just you
know, classic, and then afterthat they were all kind of you know,
fit into the same convention. Yeah, so if it was like Alien

(33:13):
Prometheus, Alien Covenant, Alien Romulus, you know, they all were like
a coalon name of a ship.Maybe, but they're not the fact that
they're all you know, there's likeAlien three and then there's Alien Resurrection,
so they're all kind of all overthe map. I don't like that.
I would like them to all bekind of uniform in a way. We
got Alien versus Predator. I meanit's just wow, that's just yeah.

(33:35):
But Romulus, people are going tobe you know, you're gonna hear the
word romulus everywhere because this is gonnabe so popular. I don't know,
all right, So thirteen, Sowe have a bonus we can use with
our thirteenth and fourteenth pick a bonusoption called the Indie equalizer, where we
can pick an independent movie in thisslot and we'll get four times whatever it

(34:00):
makes at the box office. Soif it makes ten million, we'll get
forty million. You know, that'llactually count toward our total. It makes
twenty million, we'll get eighty. So that's an option we can choose to
take or not take here, Sosomething to keep in mind as we're making
these last two picks. That beingsaid, Patrick, what are you going

(34:21):
to do with number thirteen? Well, I don't think I am going to
pick from the independent movie list.If you want to see what those lists
look like, the full list, you know, those will be on the
show notes page, by the way, too. But I think I'm going
to go with the crow when someonedies, a crow carrying that soap to

(34:45):
the none of the dead. Sometimessomething so bad happens and the sole Kimal
twist until you put the wrong thingsright. So everybody knows, you know,

(35:07):
the Crow, well maybe not,has a history, has a legacy,
if you will. Brandon Lee,which was Bruce Lee's son, was
in the original Way Wait Wait,Wait wait wait wait, Way Back died
during the making of the movie, and you know, kind of had a
little bit of a legend, ifyou will, associated with it. Low

(35:29):
Yeah, Lore, Yeah, Ithink you know, they're trying to remake
I mean, it's just a remakeof it. I think they're trying to
bring that back. So my feelingis this is going to appeal to the
teen crowd. It's got a littlebit of that, like thriller slash.
It's got a little bit, youknow, kind of dark scariness to it.
It's a little bit of a littlebit of runge emo and kind of

(35:52):
feel to it. You know,it's been three decades since this, the
original came out. It's now thirtyyears late, and the original made fifty
million dollars domestic. It actually didpretty good for the time period, and
so I think this is going todo probably equally as well for our time
period. You know, it'll probablyI'm hoping it'll do at least fifty million

(36:14):
dollars, but with inflation. Maybeit'll do way better. I love the
original, great great movie, oneof the great soundtracks of the nineties.
What I just feel like this isa limited interest, you know, ip
I don't know how many people haveactually heard of the nineties movie. I
don't know how much that matters. But then there were a bunch of like
direct to video sequels. I justdon't know what the interest level is going

(36:37):
to be on this movie unless it'sturns out to be something amazing, or
it's has some sort of crazy marketingcampaign or something to go along with it.
I see this as like and it'llcome out, they'll be like,
hey, remember the Crow. It'llmake like thirty million dollars, and then
it's gone. You might be right, you might be right, But I
mean, it is based off ofa graphic novel, I believe, so

(36:59):
it's very possible that you'll get someof that audience comeing to see it.
Those ten people. Yeah, andeverybody loved Bill's Scars Garden, so he's
in everything. He's Yeah, he'sbeen popping up left and right. He
was in John Wick, he wasin boy Kills World. Yeah, that's
right. That movie did Gangbusters.I think Spobit does better than that one.

(37:22):
I really do it look like aninteresting movie. It did, it
did. That movie actually did slightlybetter than what I thought it was going
to do. It did two pointsix million dollars. She's pretty good for
how bizarre it sounds. Yeah, coupled with international, which it did three
hundred and forty three thousand dollars,it made almost three million dollars totally.

(37:45):
Yeah. Yeah, so hopefully itonly cost a million to make. I
think the budget was well, itwas seven dollars, so I guess it
didn't make perfect it made Yeah,it made a mint. Yeah, Well,
I'll be interested to see what thecrow how the crow flies? As
the crow flies, That's what I'mhoping. It's just like straight to straight

(38:07):
to video, straight to streaming thewinner circle. So what do you got?
What do you got? The lastpick of the draft? The first
and last pick. That's crazy. It is crazy, isn't it. What
are you gonna pick? Shad,I'm so excited to hear this. I'm
gonna do the indie equalizer option. Here grab an independent film, and that
film is long Legs. I sawa b stroys up out of the sea

(38:36):
with seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns he wore ten crowns.
On each od was written a blastfrom his name. Why aren't you
telling me he'll kill and kill again? It's a little bit of a horror

(38:59):
movie. Don't know a whole lotabout it at this point. It has
this kind of mysterious buzz building marketingcampaign, but we know Nick Cage is
in it, and we know it'sdirected by the son of Anthony Perkins,
who is in Psycho. So Ithink audiences are going to be looking for
a word of mouth horror hit thissummer, and I think Long Legs is

(39:19):
going to walk away with that title. I like the way you tied that
together nicely there the walk away Yeah, Long Legs good. Yeah. Yeah.
Being the last pick, I willtell you the Neon Studio has good
movies, you know. I thinkthat's a good pick for that. You
may get some money because of thebonus, but hopefully the whole you know,

(39:43):
Nick Cage angle doesn't hurt it.You know, he has a tendency
to do a lot of movies andnot all of them are on you know,
what what are you saying? Yeah, he works a lot. I'm
not going to deny that, butyou know not all of his movies make
money. Everything he does is gold. All he does is spin gold,

(40:05):
and you dare spit in his face. This podcast, well you know it's
this podcast is no face off.Let me just say, even though we
faced off today that we did myfriend. So that being said, do
you want to recap your team forthe listeners there? Yeah? So I
have Inside Out Too Quiet Place,Day one, a Furiosa, a Mad

(40:30):
Max Saga, Bad Boys four,Ride or Die, The Watchers, Trap,
and The Crow. I just realizedwe both have a saga on us.
Yeah, my saga is a littlebetter than your saga. I'm not
gonna I'm not gonna lie. Icannot argue with that. I've got Deadpool

(40:52):
and Wolverine, Despicable Me for Twisters, the Garfield movie, Horizon in American
Saga Chapter one, Alien, Romulus, and Long Legs. A lot of
colons on my list, A lotof colons. In general, You're going

(41:14):
to need a colonoscopy as you mightactually have more colons than I have.
There's just a lot of colons andtitles these days. So let's wrap things
up today with some predictions. Firstquestion, Patrick, why do you think
your team will win this year?We just went over you know, our
rosters. Why do you think yourteam is going to be my team?

(41:37):
I think my team has a ratherremarkable way of exciting audiences. There's some
terrible things happening inside my movies. There's some absurd things happening inside my movies.
There's some unthinkable things happening inside mymovies. But what really is going

(41:58):
to bring my team together and win? Is there a collaboration of sorts?
You know, they're all there, they're all there, they're all working as
a team. They're gonna come outstrong. They're going to be like,
I'm gonna hit it real quick inthe summer and just leave you in the
in the dust. Your team's goingto hit it and forget it. Well,

(42:22):
they would never say that because they'regentle people. They're not gentle men,
because they're not all men, butthey're no. Yeah, my team,
though, is gonna win. Justif you look at my top in
my bottom, you look at yourtop and your bottom. There's no comparison
going to deliver the goods up front. I got Deadpool and Despicable Me could

(42:45):
easily be the top two movies ofthe summer. Your last three picks are
all wild cards playing off of Hope. I mean, if you just look
at history shad, which you shouldbecause you do have Horizon in American Saga,
which is based on history, WellI haven't seen it. Ye,
Well, if you knew anything abouthistory, listen, you have to go
to the movies to know that Hopecan really do wonders. And that's you

(43:10):
know what I'm banking on this year. Obviously, I'm banking on soul crushing
box office from top to bottom. All right, Well, then giving your
best estimate, because this is somethingwe are instilling this year, Giving your
best estimate without going over. Howmuch do you think your team will make?
It's almost like prices, right, rules, right, Yeah, don't

(43:32):
go over, get as close asyou can, don't go over the top.
Given those parameters, my number isone point two billion dollars. Okay,
I am going to say that mineis one point one five billion dollars,
very precise. So we will usethat the end of the summer for

(43:58):
bonus. There is a bonus forwhoever is closer without going over. Of
course, for both over no onegets it. Yeah, well you went
over for sure. Yours is goingto be way overgiven what your team's going
to make, you know, trapthat's probably true. Last question as we
close things out here, blockbuster, mediocre or disaster. What kind of summer

(44:22):
movie season do you think this willbe. I think it's going to be
pretty mediocre. I don't think it'sgoing to be a disaster, and I
definitely don't think it's going to bea blockbuster. Last year, I think
it was, you know, prettyunique in that Barbie and Oppenheimer did as
well as they did twenty twenty threewas kind of like some sense of normalcy,

(44:43):
but it was still real weird becausewe were, you know, we
had a couple of really strange yearsduring the pandemic. So last year,
I don't know if it was likea true indicator of what people were.
I think they were just starved tobe out at the theater. Yeah,
So this year, I think itit's a little weird. And we had
the actors strike and all that stufffrom last year. So there's just some

(45:04):
weird anomalies that are happening this yearthat are just going to make it,
you know, fairly mediocre. Yeah, I'm with you on mediocre. I
was initially thinking a little closer todisaster, but after looking at these movies,
I think there is some potential forsurprises. You know, there's some
decent variety, I think even youknow, you look at the bottom halves
of our list, which I kindof joke about. You know, there's

(45:25):
kind of some wild cards there. But what if those movies end up delivering.
You know, what if those endup being hits, they're good movies.
You got kind of an interesting summer. Then I don't think there's almost
any chance of being blockbuster. Idon't see a lot of all time classics
coming out, but I think there'sa chance it could be decent. I
do have hope that I'm going toblow you out of the water. Spoken

(45:47):
like a true lazy champion. Yeah, so let us know what you get
to see this summer and what youliked. Send us some feedback. Feedback
at Speaking human dot com. Butyou can also tune into our follow up
episode in September, because we alwaysyou know, follow it up, tell
you who one talk about the theoutcomes of our draft picks, and we'll

(46:09):
crunch the numbers and see whose teamtakes this year's trophy. So that's all
for this episode of Movies and Marketing. Until next time, Let's fade to
black. I'll be back. He'snot coming back.
