In questa nuova puntata di Monstrumana ci addentriamo in quel fenomeno curioso e pieno di spunti di riflessione che è il freak show. Spettacolarizzare il diverso (e il patologico!) è una pratica antica: sovrani che invitano nei loro palazzi individui considerati bizzarri e anomali per intrattenimento, musei dedicati alle cosiddette "curiosità" in cui corpi deformi e non conformi diventano oggetto d'interesse morboso, spettacoli circensi dove le folle si radunano per assistere al sovrumano e ricavarne il meraviglioso.
Tutto questo ci porta a discorsi legati all'identità, alla derisione come processo di definizione del sé, alla monetizzazione dei corpi ma anche alla libertà di usare il proprio corpo.
Sul manifesto pubblicitario che riproduce Sophie Fevvers, la donna alata protagonista di "Notti al circo", romanzo del 1984 scritto da Angela Carter, compare la scritta: "is she fact or is she fiction?"
Finzione e realtà. Di quel discorso complesso, frustrante e forse indefinibile che è il postmodernismo, questo irriducibile dualismo sembra essere una delle poche certezze. Il che fa sorridere, visto che parliamo di incertezza. Di cosa è vero e di cosa non lo è.
In questa puntata affrontiamo i temi più disparati: dal ribaltamento delle fiabe al carnevalesco di Bakhtin, dalla storia dei freaks alla disabilità connessa al linguaggio, dal travestimento come ricerca dell'identità al panopticon e l'analisi del potere di Foucault.
