Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let me ask you who was the very first mom
in history.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
It wasn't Mother Jones, it wasn't Frank Zappa and the
Mothers of Invention Band. It was Eve. Eve was the
first mother. And the name Eve in Hebrew literally means life.
(00:36):
What a name life?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
So moms.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
They're life givers. They are life givers of.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Body and soul.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
And snacks. Yeah, she is a mother of all living
and God protects and honors the gift of motherhood. Think
about it, with a very special commandment honor your father
(01:25):
and mother, special commandment to honor them. Why why why
would you think that of all of God's creation, and
we're focusing upon mothers this day, God would say honor
(01:47):
your mother. It is because your mother is an agent,
God's agent and an instrument of God's redemptive plan. And
(02:08):
I think we need to honor her and love her
for that. Think about it. She cared you for nine
months in her body. She put up with mourning, sickness
and cravings and swollen feet and achey joints and the
delivery pain. She went through all that so you could
(02:35):
have life. She changed your dirty diapers, she nursed you,
she burped you. And I think that's reason enough to
honor her, don't you think. But I think we need
(02:57):
to also be honest. No mom is perfect, No mom is.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yours.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
I don't think was my mine?
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Was it?
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Moms they have their their.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Flaws, just like the rest of us. But here's one thing.
They are our moms. They gave us life, They cheered
at our successes, they wiped our tears after disappointments. And
(03:40):
I think that when we don't honor our moms, we
are actually dishonoring ourselves, and we are dishonoring God who
gave them to us. And I know us to forget
(04:03):
some other moms. They're the ones that I like to
refer to as our spiritual mothers. Our spiritual mothers. In fact,
the Apostle Paul reminded Timothy about his Grandma Lois and
(04:23):
his mother Eunice, and how they were two strong women
of faith who first taught him about Jesus. You may
have had over the years a Sunday school teacher, a
youth leader, a godmother, or even a kind neighbor who
(04:52):
modeled the love of God. I remember one who I
was a Sunday school teacher, and I want to share
a little bit because I want to honor a woman
whose name is Pat Moore. Our church as I was
growing up, was in the city. We moved out into
(05:13):
the suburbs. And what happens to a lot of churches
when people move out in the suburbs, people they don't
come around as much. And Pat was a senior citizen,
short and the grayest hair you could find. And Pat
was committed to keep the youth alive in that church. Now,
what's interesting about Pat She also lived in the suburbs
(05:39):
and she would come and pick me up before I
had a driver's license, to make sure that I got
to church every Sunday late afternoon for the youth gathering
that she was leading. I think about that today we
(06:00):
may send send send some youth an email, or send
someone an email and say well come. But she climbed
in her car and brought me, picked me up, and
and I remember some of the lessons she taught. And
I have to believe that that even those spiritual mothers
(06:21):
that God plays in our lives, they're very much a
part of God's redemptive plan. And you know those people,
they also teach us how to pray. They helped us
to memorize Bible verses and maybe they bribed you with
candy during a boring worship service. They're like brothers, and
(06:45):
I'm sure you might be thinking of some in your
past who is that way as well. I think we
should also thank God and honor those who have had
that influence in our life. But of course we can't
talk about Christian motherhood and not think about Mary, the
(07:09):
Mother of Jesus. Now, Mary, obviously she wasn't just some
random girl, but the Bible tells us that God chose
her and she was called highly.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Favored.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Imagine getting that message from an angel like she did. Hey,
you've been picked to be the mother of the Messiah.
No pressure there, right, And Mary represents a long line
of women Eve, Sarah, Ruth and more through whom God
(08:00):
fulfilled his promise to the world through those women, and
she reminds us that motherhood is not just biological. It's
not just biological, not at all. But motherhood is also
(08:22):
deeply spiritual. And we get that pause letter to Collatians
where he wrote, but when the set time had fully come,
God said his son, born of a woman, born under
the law, to redeem those under the law. That we
(08:43):
might receive adoption to sonship. Let that sink in every birth,
every birth is a holy and the sacred reminder of
(09:09):
Jesus' birth. Every mom, you're doing sacred work. It's sacred work.
Now let's go a little further. Here's a twist that
maybe you haven't thought about, but I think it needs
(09:31):
to be mentioned. And it is also I would call
it another metaphor for a kind of mother, and it
essentially is is the local church. Okay, here's what I'm
getting when I say the church is also like a
metaphor for a mother. And when I say that, for
(09:54):
some of you, it might sound a little weird at first,
especially if you think of the church as just some
building somewhere. But the Bible calls the church want the
bride of Christ, the church the bride of Christ, and
(10:15):
in many ways, the local church. What we do here
as a family, as a family of God, we do
this stuff that just like every mom is called to do.
She teaches us, education, feeds us in fellowship, and sometimes
(10:38):
corrects us, Hey, what does the word say? Let's get
that straight, doing it with love, and sometimes frustrates us,
just like moms can do from time to time get frustrated.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
She teaches us, feeds.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Us, corrects us, and sometimes frustrates us. And I think
we also have to be real as well when we
think of the local church, which is what we are
as this bride of Christ. Sometimes the church has made
mistakes historically, she hasn't always loved well. Sometimes the church
(11:25):
has been silent when it should have spoken, or harsh
when the church should have hogged.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
But even with.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
All her flaws, she is where we find Jesus here
in this place, in this setting, and she is also
in the local church. We are reminded of who we
are and who we belong to. So now what are
(12:03):
we gonna do with all that stuff? As a community
of believers of Christ followers? I have a few things
I would encourage you to do just to kind of
apply that. First of all, practice honor daily.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Daily.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Honoring your mother isn't just buying a card once a year.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
It's a lifestyle.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Look for daily ways to show appreciation, respect enough to
your mom, but also to the women who's nurtured you.
I've had so many I could write a book on
them and how they're a part of God's mosaic. Of
(12:55):
having that maternal touch and influence. And I'm sure that's
true for each of us if we allow our eyes
to see it and to claim it. So practice honor daily,
make some phone calls, write a handwritten note to something,
to let someone who's helped you and inspired you to
(13:16):
know that you've noticed and you appreciate it. But also
give grace for imperfection. Okay, embarrassing things can happen. Moms
are human, They make mistakes, and so I want to
(13:40):
encourage you to extend the same forgiveness and the same
understanding to them that God gave to you, that God
gave to you. And also recognize those spiritual mothers, those
(14:04):
spiritual mothers. Identify the women who have influenced your spiritual life,
Sunday school teachers, Confirmation teachers, mentors, grandmothers, friends, and find
a way just to thank them, thank them. And I
(14:30):
would also invite you to reclaim the Church as your
mother as well, the bride of Christ. Don't give up
on the Church because she's flawed. Engage in her healing
(14:50):
and mission and be part of the church's growth as
she continues to nurture believers in faith.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
So, hey, we honor our moms.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Today, biological, spiritual, adoptive, and the church family.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
We thank them, we celebrate them, we forgive them when
they fall short, and we lift them up.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
So here's to you moms who packed the lunch, For
the moms who prayed when we didn't know you were praying.
For the moms who believed in us before we ever
(15:55):
believed in ourselves. The moms who gave us a glimpse
of God's love and how it looks, for the heart
of a mother is very much like the heart of God.
(16:18):
Let us pray, God of life, thank you for moms,
the ones who birthed us, raised us, prayed for us,
taught us, and stuck with us. Thank you for the
(16:41):
women who loved us like their own, whether or not
we share DNA. Thank you for their patience, their hugs,
their faith, and their snacks. Thank you for Mary, the
(17:05):
mother of our Lord, who reminds us that you show
up in unexpected places, even in a messy delivery room.
And thank you Lord for the Church, our spiritual mother.
For we are born again into a new life with you.
(17:33):
Help us to honor the women You've placed in our
lives and to show them the same grace that they've
shown us in Jesus' name. Amen,
