En 2007 visité Ciudad de Guatemala, donde presencié la puesta es escena del grupo de teatro juvenil y popular Iqui Balam. Al final de esa presentación, conversé con su director, Pedro Castillo. Esa conversación sirvió de plataforma para el programa Voces, que semanalmente realizaba en la desaparecida Radio Nederland Wereldomroep.

Esta agrupación se formó en 1996, en el municipio de Villa Nueva, en el asentamiento de Mario Alioto López Sánchez, en la búsqueda de un espacio de autoayuda frente la violencia intra familiar y juvenil, así como a las adicciones.

En sus inicios, los integrantes del grupo Iqui Balam eran miembros de las pandillas MS y 18, dos de las más sanguinarias que operaban en Guatemala. Sin embargo, el grupo se estableció como un espacio neutro en donde las rivalidades no eran obstáculos para salir adelante.
