You've got your cover here. Host John new Name name, Hello, everyone,
(00:27):
Welcome to episode two twelve of Hobby Quick Hits. I'm
John Newman, and I have a confession to make. This
show is late. This is our annual NFL preview and
Rookie special, and I usually do it before the season,
but I had a few things come up, one being
the Basketball Card Hall of Fame class and I wanted
(00:51):
to get that out first, and so I'm sort of
cheating with this episode. I have a two week I
am recording this before week games, so I've seen two
teams or two games for every team, not three, So
got a two week head start when we go through this.
But my picks haven't changed as far as division winners
(01:15):
and that sort of thing too much based on those
two games. But I did get to see some folks play,
so you know, a two game head start over past
years of doing this previous special. So my apology there,
but better a couple of weeks late than never. So
(01:38):
with that being said, let's take a quick little break
and we'll be back with the preview.

next couple weeks, a lot of interesting nonsports ones as well,
with Disney and SpongeBob. Thanks thanks John. And that's a
(06:36):
terrible SpongeBob impression. But I didn't charge you for it,
so don't complain, all right, folks. I do this show
every year NFL Preview. I go over the rookies. Maybe
you can invest in. I know everyone loves that. I
word kind of give my picks for the division winners,
wild Cards, who's going to the super Bowl? My Super
(06:56):
Bowl pick rookies to watch. I give out who I
predict will win those awards. Rookie of the year at MVP,
we do it every year, except this year. For the
first time ever, I'm doing it two weeks into the season.
My bad. I'll wear that drop pass if you will.
But you know, still early on, and frankly, what I
(07:20):
got for you today wouldn't be much different had I
done this before the season started. So let's go with
division winners before we get into rookies and cards. Let's
just go with the eight division winners, if you will.
These are all teams I predict will win their division.
I got the Buffalo Bills. We'll start with the AFC,
(07:45):
Buffalo Bills, the Baltimore Ravens. I hate to say it,
being a Steeler fan, but I gotta be honest. The Buffalo,
the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills. This one I will say
has changed since the season started. I probably would have
picked the Chiefs, but they're off to w O when
two starts. So I like what San Diego's doing. I
(08:08):
like what Harvard's doing there, justin Herbert playing good quarterback
like he usually does. I think people are a little
hard on him, but I think things are clicking there.
I guys think San Diego wins the division and I
like Jacksonville. I'm shocked to say it, but I'm going
(08:29):
with Jacksonville. Houston does not look the part, and I
don't think Daniel Jones and the Colts can keep up
the pace that they're on currently. So they're my four
division winners in the AFC. I'm gonna go in the
NFC with Philadelphia. There's still, you know, the defending champions.
(08:51):
I think Green Bay has adding Michael Parsons and and
another year of experience for Jordan Love. They look really,
really solid. Tampa Bay. You know, you don't have to
love Baker Mayfield, but he gets the job done. And
the LA Rams they're not dead yet. Everyone wants to
(09:11):
bury them. They're not. They're not dead yet. For wildcards,
three on each side. Let's start with the NFC, this
time Washington. I don't think they win a division. I
think they get into playoffs. And Detroit. I know they're
not last year's Detroit, but I think they have enough
(09:32):
to make it into the playoffs. And another surprise team.
I think Arizona. I think the Cardinals are starting to mature,
putting things together, and they take one of the wild
one of the three wildcards in the AFC. If you
think I'm a homer, you won't after I make my
(09:53):
three wildcard picks. Here, I'm going with the Colts. I
don't think they win a division, but I think they
do enough to get in the playoffs as a wildcard.
The Denver Broncos Sean Payton bow Knicks. I don't think
they win the division just yet. They're making strides, but again,
I think they get in the playoffs this year. And
(10:15):
I know they don't look like anything like their former selves,
but I too think they'll win enough games to make
it to the dance. I don't think they get far
in the dance. With the Kansas City Chiefs. I think
the decline is sort of happening before they have to reload.
I think they make the playoffs just barely this year.
(10:37):
My Steelers no such luck. I'd like to be a homer,
but I'm too honest, so I can't pick the Steelers.
So there are the fourteen playoff teams according to me. Again,
with a two game head start, let's talk about before
we get into like Super Bowl picks and award winners,
(10:58):
let's talk about notable rookies. I'm not going to talk
about I hate to say it, but I'm not going
to talk about any defensive players. You got your Abdul
Carters and other guys. They're going to stick to kind
of what moves the hobby, right, Quarterbacks, running backs, receivers,
especially quarterbacks, and these are rookies, and I'll give sort
(11:20):
of my little blurb about them, right. I guess the
big one is, you know, Ashton Genty as far as
the running backs go, little bit of a slow start.
Believe me. I know he's on my fantasy team and
hoping he kicks in the gear. I think he will,
but it may not be the year we were hoping
(11:40):
for from Ashton Jenny. I think it's going to take
them a year to get accustomed to the speed of
the NFL. I think Chip Kelly and the Raiders are
trying to figure out how much they want to use
them or how fast they want to use them a lot.
So that's that's kind of slowed his his pace right now.
(12:03):
Cam Ward right, number one pick doing Okay, I'm not
as big as cam Ward as a lot of other people,
He's probably gonna be one of the guys along with
Ashton Genty driving a lot of these twenty twenty five products.
I tread cautiously here. I think he's going to be
a solid player. I don't know if he's going to
(12:24):
be that elite level like your Lamar Jackson's and Josh Allen's.
Time will tell, but I just don't feel that way
about him. Jackson Dart, I think his day will come
this year, not just quite. Yeah. I kind of like him,
but I think he's going to have some struggles early
(12:46):
on when his number finally gets called. Let's talk about
some more again. Another guy driving products right, Travis Hunter,
two way player, corner wide receiver, Jackville still trying to
sort of navigate those grounds of how they're going to
utilize them and keep them fresh. I like him. I
(13:09):
think he's kind of the name even if the numbers
don't value people like him enough to buy him hobby
wise and show him some hobby love. A guy that's
on my team that you know, was a little little
leery of when they drafted him. A lot of other
people do believe in them. I watched him in the preseason,
(13:30):
and I know it's preseason, and I just watched him
muff a kickoff and cost them a game against the Seahawks.
But I'm not sold on Caleb Johnson. I know a
lot of people says the second best back after Ashton.
I'm not one of those folks. Tread cautiously there. I'm
a Steeler fan who's not buying Caleb Johnson cards. So
(13:54):
that should tell you where I fall on the Caleb
Johnson And again, I hope I'm wrong as fan. I
hope I'm dead wrong. Let's talk about some other running backs.
So Mari Hampton, ami On Hampton from San Diego, a
little bit of a slow start there. I think he'll
be good. I don't know if he'll be great. It's
(14:16):
hard to be a great back. There are very few
of them, right, especially with the trend in the NFL
of running back by committee. But you got him a
guy I do like. We don't talk. You don't think
it talked about enough. He just signed and had a
pretty good first start in limited touches. And that's Quinn
(14:37):
Shawn Judkins, the Ohio state running back who's looking like
will be the Bell cow back for the Browns. And
I think you can get him at a discounted rate
when you look at the Hampton's and Genties of the world.
So someone to look at if you believe now, maybe
the fact that he's on the Brown scares your way.
(14:59):
I fully understand that, but I like him. Full disclosure,
he's also on my fantasy team. But he's on my
fantasy team because I like him and I think he's
going to be productive. He can catch the ball too
out of the backfield as well. Traveon Henderson running back
(15:19):
for New England. Another Ohio State product that's pretty good.
But New England sort of uses that running back by committee,
so you know, be careful, be careful there. R J.
Harvey in Denver. I think he's gonna have to wait
sort of until he emerges. But again, a good, good,
(15:43):
cheaper buy potentially while he's not producing. I like this
guy for the Giants camp scatterball. I know he's a
fan favorite, kind of one of those little engine that could,
if you will, can catch the ball a little bit
out of the backfield. It's just the Giants, right, and
it looks like he's starting to emerge as the number
(16:07):
one back there. Again, a little bit of hype in college,
so that price tag might not match, you know, the
production long term, so just be careful if you're going
scatterbow crazy if you will tight ends and not. You know,
Tyler Warren looks good early, you know, but to be
(16:30):
a tight end, you know, to get hobby love and
the tight end side, you really really have to be
in that upper echelon there. Travis Kelcey types brock Bowers
is now in that that space and probably the number one.
You know, does Warren have a chance, Sure, but it's
real early, but maybe that's the time to buy him
right early on if you believe in the long term.
(16:53):
A guy that I thought the Bears sort of overdrafted
and early returns kind of reflect. And that's Colston Loveland,
tight end out of Michigan, also on my fantasy team,
but I thought I kind of drafted him late, just
hoping that they were going to utilize him like Ben
(17:14):
Johnson did Sam Laporte in Detroit, but right now does
not look anything like the player that he supposedly drafted.
So they just lost the game by thirty one points
where you have to throw the ball a lot and
he had zero catches. So Cole Comet still the tight
end one in Chicago. So I'm not a big Loveland guy.
(17:39):
Sort of the the you know how long he stays
on my fantasy team remains to be seen. But I
think I think maybe the hype won't match the production there.
Receiver wise, the guy I really like, and again he's
kind of struggled out the gate, but I still like
him long term. First wide receiver picked in the draft,
(18:04):
and that's Matthew Golden out of Texas, and I know
I think he's him in love are trying to build
some kind of camaraderie in Green Bay. I think it
eventually will happen. He will become the one there, but
how soon that remains to be seen. So again, you know,
i'd say he's a bye, but be careful about overspending.
(18:27):
I'm not fully sold on how fast that does happen.
Another guy, TETRAROA. McMillan in Carolina. I like him. I
think he's a legit wide receiver, but again, you got
Ryce Young throwing it to you. Kind of a struggling
(18:48):
trying to get get back to prominence Carolina Panthers. But
I do like McMillan. He's too talented to ignore, so
I'll mention him as well, along with you know, Mathical,
they're kind of the cream of the crop. Receiver wise
(19:09):
to me long term. All right, before I give you
my Super Bowl pick, let me go with the awards
right Rookie of the Year. I don't think he's gonna
have a great year, but I don't think there's going
to be a great rookie season this year offensively from
a lot of guys. I'm gonna go with Ashton Genty,
(19:30):
with my second choice being mc millan out of Carolina,
And if Genty's don't pick it up, mc millan could
be your twenty twenty five NFL Rookie the Year. But
I'm going with one of those two guys. I'll go
with Genty as my first choice, McMillan as my second choice,
but I wouldn't be shocked if, like Genty can't really
(19:52):
get that thing started, like people think McMillan could, could
surprise folks and win this year's rookie year. I think
this year's MVP is going again come down to the
same two guys, but I think the guy that was
runner up last year will win it this year. I'm
going Lamar Jackson over Josh Allen. I think Baltimore is
(20:16):
going to easily win that division. As much as that
hurts me inside to say, Lamar Jackson is one of
the greats at the quarterback position. He's a guy who's
gotten better each year. He's improved his accuracy. We all
know we can run the ball like a running in
a sense of another running back who can throw it.
(20:36):
And he's really putting together all his skill sets. And
I think this year, I think, you know, he could
have easily won it. Last year, many people felt like
he had a better year than Josh Allen. I think
between that what happened last year and the year he's
gonna put together this year, I think he gets his
regular season MVP. So I'm going Lamar Jackson for MVP
(21:01):
this time. Reverse he beats Josh Allen out for the award.
Last year was the other way around, So I'm not
gonna go with I'm just gonna give you who I
think makes the Super Bowl and then predict a winner
and the score. I think Green Bay. I'm really maybe
it's a nuts I'm buying what Green Bay seven. I
(21:22):
think they're playing well. They added Parsons, Like I said,
you got Mattrew Golden who hasn't even really started playing
well yet. Jordan loves another year older and experienced and
twenty seven year old Green Bay quarterbacks win super Bowls.
Brett Favre won a court won a Super Bowl at
(21:43):
twenty seven for green Bay. So did Aaron Rodgers, so
did Bart Star. Does Jordan Love win a super Bowl
in age twenty seven, I don't know, but he's making it.
I'm predicting green Bay versus Buffalo, Josh Allen of Super Bowl.
That's my prediction. Now I will tell you who won.
(22:05):
Who wins. I think Buffalo fans. I'm not a Bills fan.
I know I go to a game or two a
year because the proximity here in Syracuse. Again, I'm a
Steelers fan. I think Buffalo gets their Super Bowl. I
think it's a great game against green Bay. But I
think Josh Allen and James Cook are just a little
(22:27):
too much for green Bay. So I'm going to go
twenty seven seventeen Buffalo over green Bay. Yes, Love makes
it at age twenty seven to the Super Bowl, but
he can't get it done like Farv Rogers and Bart Starr.
But hey, if he's in it, he's got a fifty
(22:48):
percent chance to get it done. So there is your
NFL twenty twenty five preview and rookie special. Sorry folks
that it's two weeks late. I will try to not
have that happen again in the future. Happy enjoy the
NFL season. I hope you enjoy the NFL season as
(23:09):
much as I do. Between a little betting here and there,
I'm in fantasy football, big money league there, and I
even am in a points league where you pick a
team each week and try to get the most points
as far as scored. So I love football season, I
(23:30):
love fall. So I'm in my happy place and hope
you enjoy it as well. We'll see you. We'll see
you next time.
