Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hobby Quick Hits, delivering that breaking hobby news he loads
you want to know those hot Josh hard shopshop You've
got your com her host John new Name, Welcome to

(00:28):
another edition of Hobby Quick Its. I don't know it
seems like it's been more than two weeks, but happy
to be back. Today's a Q and A episode. So
you know, I always get I don't say always, but
a lot of times they'll get questions asked me via
d MS or emails. I always answer them, answer them

(00:51):
in a prompt fashion, and you know, depending on the question,
I will ask the person who asked that, Hey, do
you mind if I use this question on a future
Q and A episode because I think it may be
a question others may have as well, or I find
it interesting. Sometimes they could be about the hobby. Sometimes

(01:14):
they could be a little off topic. It could range
to both. So that's what today's episode. We got a
lot of news sort of to catch up on, because
last episode we did our football preview and we kind
of cut out the new segment to devote more time

(01:34):
to the preview. So we'll catch up on some news
and as always, we'll have our product release scheduled as well,
so a quick break and then we'll be back with
first with the releases of the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Let's go round the hobby VERSEU and catch up on
this week's hobby news.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
And find out all right, it's not really new news
about a week old. But again, we weren't on last week,
so we didn't get to cover at PSA has announced
a price increase on some of their lower levels but

(04:55):
value both nineteen ninety nine to twenty one ninety nine,
value twenty four ninety nine to twenty seven ninety nine
in value plus thirty nine ninety nine, growing up five
dollars to forty four ninety nine. So we're gonna cost
you a little bit more to send to PSA. I

(05:16):
think that the Grand Steam scheme of things, the increases
are minimum, but they're trying to offset some of the
you know, the backlog, if you will, And if they're
gonna have a backlog, they want more money to to
you know, get through it, get the way out of it.

(05:36):
Also announced add five days to any of the previous
turnaround time, So if it was forty days, it's now
forty five. If it was twenty days, it's now twenty five.
So add five days to any kind of you know,
turnaround time estimates, if you will. Staying on the PSA

(06:00):
A news front.

Speaker 5 (06:02):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
They in uh correlation with the Major League Players Incorporated,
a business arm of the Players Union. Uh. Some players
were on eBay live opening product and pulling cards.

Speaker 5 (06:17):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Those players were Bobby went Junior, Corbyn Carroll, Bryce Terrang,
Trevor McGill, Justin Turner, Evan Uh, Evan Carter, and Travis Bizana.
And some of those cards, some of those key cards
that they pulled, some of the bigger hints will be
slabbed by p s A uh and sold on the platform.

(06:41):
If you win that card or buy that card, UH,
you'll get a video of that said player pulling pulling
that card, and the slab itself will be designated UH
players collection. So and I know Bobby Witt Junior and
Corbyn Carroll for sure, but I think all those players

(07:04):
that I just mentioned are all collectors in their own right.
Sot on a little small piece of small history there
that's sort of your thing, So happy auctioning there. Another

(07:25):
The Baldemore News nineteen fourteen. Babe, Ruth, you know air
tags Rookie great in SGC three, which sold in December
of twenty twenty three, is coming back for sale, this
time on Heritage Their fall auction and last sold in

(07:47):
December twenty three for seven point three million dollars. This
is a card that's only been available to auction two
times in the last ten years. This will be the
second time in the last ten years, and it's expected
to fetch more than the seven point three million dollars

(08:10):
December of twenty twenty three sale. We'll see here I'll
come the Heritage Fall auction. If you like to get
Otani cards like I do, there is one that was
only distributed on September twenty first at Dodger Stadium. It's

(08:34):
the De cart de Dodgers three card set, which features Otanni,
Freddie Freeman, and ti Oscar Hernandez. They were given out
to fans coming through the turnstiles, owning ten thousand sets produced,
so it's something if you collect o'tanny cards, there's one

(08:58):
that maybe could chase and add to your collection. Decarte
I Guess is a cosmetics brand that Otani is a
spokesman for. In the three cards depict the players doing
a hand gesture that Otani did during their commercials there,

(09:23):
so you know the chase is on for that set,
all right. So you know Big Box is not just
relying to the major sports, and not that tennis isn't
a major sport, but Carlos Alcarez's tennis ball, the last

(09:43):
one he hit to win the twenty twenty five US
Open in his victory over Yannick Center, just well, so
that Southern Beast an auction for eighty nine thousand dollars.
That's a This is the previous record for a tennis ball,
which was the twenty thirteen US Open victory ball from

(10:07):
Serena Williams. That ball went for nine and a half
one thousand dollars, So eighty thousand dollars more. Again, we're
talking twelve years later, so the market is a lot different.
If you want a chance that another piece of Alcarez's history,

(10:31):
his racket, which is a baybo babelette or babelet forgive
me if I pronounced that wrong. His racket from the
twenty twenty three Wimbledon victory over no Check nover check
is going to be ending in October nineteenth on prestige

(10:56):
Memorabiliates already got bit and it's expected to go over
two hundred k. So if you want the recket from
his twenty twenty three Wimbledon run saved your money and
bid bid on that as well. Fanatics has announced they

(11:16):
first ever distribution to China with a basketball release which
will be coming up here in a few weeks I
believe twenty twenty five, twenty six tops Master Attacks and
they're using the Ku Distributorship, which is a manufacturing distributor

(11:39):
to China to distribute that product to China first time
for that. And so again Fanatics trying to broaden their
range and obviously you know, be worldwide, so that's look
for that if you're in China here very soon to

(12:02):
be honest with you. So there you go. That's the
news for this segment, and enjoy the hobby and now
all right time for another Q and A episode. Always
enjoy these again, just so everyone knows, these are questions

(12:26):
I've gotten over the last a few weeks. I've already
answered them. They come in via either dm PM or
email I've or text. I've answered these to the people
answer asking them already. Don't make them wait for the show,
but I asked their permission to use it as part

(12:47):
of the Q and A episode, so that that's what
you'll hear on the show if they let me use
their name. I'll say their first name every once in
a while. Some will say you can use the question,
just don't attach my name to it. I don't have
any of those on today's particular episodes. So with that
being said, let's start with no particular or just the

(13:10):
way I printed these out. First question comes from Riley,
who asked, John, I followed you and the show on
social media. You didn't follow back? How come? I'm not malicious.
I'm not avoiding you on purpose. I get a lot
of sometimes I get a lot of like people who

(13:31):
want to do logo designs and different things like that,
so sometimes I don't follow everybody back. The best way
to get to follow back, which I love to do,
is to be interactive. So if you like one of
my posts, or you comment on one of my posts, I
will see that. I will say follows you, and there'll

(13:52):
be a followback sort of button to click. That's the
best way to get a follow back. If it's it's
important to you, PM me, DM me, I'll make sure
to do it. It's not. I'm not not doing it
to be negative or malicious. I just you know, I
try to get through as many follow backs as I can,

(14:15):
but sometimes they do slip through the crack. So there's
the best way to do it is sort of be interactive,
and then it's easier for me to see that I'm
not following that person who's being interactive with me, and
I fix that solve that. All right. Next question comes
from Ryan who says, I heard your preview Baseball episode

(14:38):
earlier this year, but now that the playoffs are set,
give me your World Series matchup and winner. It's gonna
be hard to pick against the Dodgers. That just lineup
is just too formidable. So I'll say the Dodgers in
the NL, and man, I I'm leaning Tigers or Yankees

(15:02):
in the AL. Aj Hinches is a great manager and
a great postseason manager. Treik Schoolball is one of the
best pitchers in baseball. Hard to pick against them, So
I'll say Tigers are Yankees, and I'll have my bet
by saying, whether it's the Tigers or the Yankees, I'm
going to pick the Dodgers to win the World Series again,

(15:24):
so Dodgers versus Eager, either the Tigers or the Yankees.
And that was a pretty new question that actually just
came in yesterday, So all right, next question comes by
way of Chad, what are your thoughts with PSA PSA
SGC in sgc's numbers on the decline. You know, people

(15:51):
know how I feel about SGC, and I'm a folk summer.
The latest general report I'd be lying if I said
wasn't disappointing. I hope they're not going away, you know,
I hope the decline and I know I just spoke
about this on hobby Hotline. I hope the decline is

(16:15):
coming from the place of people are like a little
tentative of SGC going away, and then when they don't,
they'll jump back on board and submit. I will say this,
I just had a bulk sub that was like my
fifth highest including before the bulk rates went away. So
on a local level, I'm still seeing a significant amount

(16:40):
of cards sub but again, when you look at the
big picture, that that's not being indicated. So yeah, it's disappointing.
I don't want SGC to go away, but it's also
obviously not my call. And what we're seeing here, folks
is I'm not sure what COLLECTS is doing other than

(17:01):
opening the door up for CDC to kind of try
to step foot into that number two spot and they're
smart people that work in the building. I always say,
but I really question this kind of decision. And you
know you asked about PSI. I know they just raised
their prices, that the raises were very slight, so I

(17:24):
don't think that's significant there. But they extended their turnaround
times by five days. Well, five days when your turnaround
times are already pretty significant, are also kind of a
blip under radar. So not a lot to say there.
But I just hope, I hope that she sees is

(17:45):
still around. And again that comes from a selfish point
of view, if you will, all right, Next question comes
from Laurel. A few weeks back. She asked me before
the season, give me a football player that maybe I
should be buying. And it's hard to give just one.

(18:06):
And I'll take this question as this one that's sort
of at a lower level but has the potential two
you know, have a higher ceiling, if you will. I
would have loved to say Rock Bouers. That's a guy
that I have plenty of and been buying. Little slow start.

(18:28):
I think he's kind of nagging knee injury. I still
love Rock Bowers. Another guy I love Marvin Harris J.
Marvin Harrison Junior. He's off to a little bit of
a slow start, I guess, and I still believe in
both those guys. So it's a great buying opportunity as
their cards well downtick right, So there's two. Obviously, the

(18:51):
NFL is a quarterback driven league. You know, just when
we thought the Chiefs were dead, there's starting to play well.
I think Patrick Mahomes has a couple of Super Bowls
left in him before his career is over. His cards
might be a little bit down due to some of
their early struggles. Might be an opportunity to snag a

(19:15):
couple of his cards, if you will. If you like rookies,
you know, if you're a Giants fan or a Jackson
Dark believer, you might go that route. Definitely on the
ground level, potentially there in the quarterback side of things.
And if you think that josh Alan error has begun,

(19:38):
you know, again, his stuff's not necessarily cheap either, but
you know you might be able to get him if
he was to win a Super Bowl title this year,
might be an opportunity to buy some of his stuff
before that happens. I know you asked for one, and
I gave you a lot five or six there, but
that's it's so hard to pick you one guy, especially

(20:01):
in football, a sport i'm definitely passionate about. So I
gave you a few. You may have your own thoughts
or other guys I didn't mention as well. Next question
comes from Mark, and again I mentioned sometimes these questions
are not hobby specific, which it's kind of nice because

(20:24):
we're all human beings and we do stuff outside the hobby.
Mark says, hey, I follow you your personal Facebook account.
I see you post a lot of food picks and
stuff you make. What is your favorite food? Quick answers
anything I make on my Blackstone. But my favorite food

(20:44):
really is probably seafood lobster crab. I'm a huge seafood guy.
Could eat I don't eat it every day, but I
definitely could. I couldn't afford to eat it every day,
but seafood I could live on every day. One of
my favorite foods. Thanks for the question. Mark, Bob asks,

(21:05):
I've heard your hobby Pet Peeves show. Do you have
any new ones that you did since the show that
I listened to? I guess you know, I don't nothing
like ruins my day or anything like that. I don't
let the hobby get to me to that level. It's
eight percent of my life, So there's ninety two percent

(21:28):
of non hobby stuff that takes up my life. I
guess i'd say if I have a new hobby, pet peeve.
And again, don't take this as me losing sleep or
I'm mad or I'm punching walls. But I've noticed to me,
and I could be wrong, it's just one man's opinion.
I've noticed in content creation it seems like, and again,

(21:50):
perception isn't always reality. But I feel like certain content
creators I think are more in love with the content
creation than the hobby or the cards themselves. And again
I don't want to pay with a broadbrush that doesn't
apply to most people, but I think there are a
segment of content creators who I feel like are more

(22:12):
in love with themselves on video then them talking about
cards or showing cards and that sort of thing. That
doesn't make them the Andy Christ or or bad people.
It's just not my thing, right. The cards were always
here before the content creation was for me, So that's

(22:34):
the order that I put them in and will always
put him in. So again, just just my perception. And
my answer to that question, thank you. It's about all right.
We have one more question comes from Eric. He says,
what is your I know you do vintage, What is
your favorite player modern to buy and sell? And why? Man,

(23:02):
that's again hard to answer. One. I'll give you one.
I'm a I know he didn't have a tremendous year
this year, but he's a collector in his own right too,
so I might be competing against him to buy some
of his cards. But that's Bobby Witt Junior. I think
he's one of the best five to two players in

(23:22):
the major leagues. I think he's reminiscent of Mike Trout.
Hopefully he stays injury free unlike Mike Trout unfortunately. So
Bobby with Junior is my guy. You know, shortstop, people
love short stops. And I know he's starting the long
term deal in Kansas City. I know they didn't make

(23:44):
the postseason, but he's gonna be a barring injury. He's
a guy that will talk about every year, probably a
Hall of Famer, barring injury, and just love how he
plays the game. And I don't get to see him
a lot here on the East Coast on TV, but
anytime they are on TV, I always make a point

(24:06):
to watch them, and uh, just a great player I
kind of like and uh as cards can be, you know,
not cheap, wouldn't classify them as cheap, but these cards
are definitely affordable and I think there's definitely a lot
of ceiling uh there as well

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
