Speaker 1 (00:00):
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the ever changing world
of technology? Can check it out? Can help make some
sense of it all? Breaking down GeekSpeak into street speak.
Technology columnist, author, and TV personality Mark Saltzman covers consumer
technology each week for every listener. Mark tackles the latest news, reviews,
and how toos to help you understand what's hot, what's

(00:21):
not and why.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Hey everyone, welcome to check it out. It's episode four thirteen.
All right, So we're leaving September heading into October, one
of my favorite months, actually, especially as I like anything spooky,
like Halloween horror movies. Ooh, I just saw Weapons loved it.
A little late to the game, but what a cool flick.

(00:46):
And I've got some travel coming up in October, going
to New York a bunch of times. Speaking of travel,
I just hit one million miles flown with my airline.
All right, climate activists, please don't hate me. I don't
drive when I'm in my hometown. I work from home,
very little carbon footprint there. But yeah, I do travel
quite a bit coach class around the world. So what

(01:08):
does that mean? A million miles? So with Star Alliance,
the group of which my airline is part of I
will keep the gold status as it's called, for life,
so I don't need to maintain it every year by
flying a certain amount. So I get all the perks,
like access to the lounge with free food and drinks
and all that, a shorter line through security which is

(01:29):
always helpful, getting to board the aircraft in zone two
so right after first class, regardless of the fare of
the flight, getting an extra suitcase and extra weight per suitcase.
So there's a lot of benefits which is pretty cool,
some great perks. So yeah, I got a die cast
airplane FedEx to me today, So yeah, I put it

(01:49):
together and it's going to be on my bookshelf now
with a little plaque that says million mile member, which
is very nice. All right, but I digress. You're not
tuning into tech at to hear me chat about flying
around the world. Let me tell you what's on top
this hour, as we've got some great guests lined up
and a variety of topics as well. We're going to
kick things off with Melissa Maker. She is a social

(02:12):
media celebrity and get this, she made a career and
a good one at that, all about cleaning. So she
has this brand, clean my space, merchandise, a book, YouTube,
and other platforms these videos. So I'm going to chat
with her in partnership with LG about the intersection of
tech and cleaning, including how some kitchen and laundry appliances

(02:32):
can help transform your daily routines. So Melissa Maker is
going to help kick off tech it Out in a moment.
After that, we're going to catch up with tech lifestyle
expert Mario Armstrong, who's going to chat with us about
Windows ten support coming to an end in the middle
of October. What does that mean exactly? Will your Windows
ten PC still work or do you need to buy

(02:53):
a new PC?

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Or maybe there's.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Something in between. We're going to get to all of that.
Also on the program today, pro photogra and YouTube star
Tyler Stallman joins me. I interviewed him at Apple Park
in Cooper Tino when the new iPhones came out a
couple weeks ago, and he chatted with me about his
first impressions of the iPhone Air and the iPhone seventeen
and Pro and Promax. So I'm going to play that

(03:17):
and then before we wrap up this show, if we
have time, I think we will. I'm going to talk
about a reader's digest article I wrote on how to
extend the life of your smartphone and in particular the battery.
What are you doing wrong every day when you're charging
up your phone, which is hurting the longevity of the
phone's battery. I'm going to get to all of that,
so a very pac tech it out for you, powered

(03:38):
by Visa, which I'll tell you more about a little
bit later.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
But let's officially kick off the new show with our.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
First interview as we navigate through back to school and
back to work season. I'm thrilled to have back onto
the show Melissa Maker, cleaning expert, social media star, and
LG brand ambassador. She's here to talk about the intersection
of tech and cleaning, including how LG's innovative kitchen and
laundry appliances can transform daily routines, boost efficiency, and bring

(04:07):
a sense of calm and organization to even the busiest
of households. Welcome back to the show, Melissa, Good to
chat with you again.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Hey Mark, it's great to chat with you too.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Crazy that here we are already officially into the fall,
so I know that many of our listeners already know
who you are.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Melissa.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
They probably follow you on your various platforms, but please
introduce yourself to those who don't, and please tell us
what you've been up to lately.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
Sure, So, I have a YouTube channel called clean my Space,
and I started it mark as you know, because I
really don't like cleaning, and I just wanted to help
other people like me find more efficient and effective ways
to get the job done right the first time. And
on my journey, I've been a content creator since twenty twelve,

(04:53):
I've definitely found more ways to like I can't quite
say love, but like cleaning, and just find different ways
to you know, integrate that efficiency into home. And during
that time, i'd become a mom, and you know, I've
moved and renovated, so I've been through it all. And
you know, this past summer, I got my daughter off
to overnight camp for the first time. So let me

(05:15):
tell you there were a lot of needs for efficiency there,
especially that coming home from camp, laundry.

Speaker 5 (05:21):
The boys later.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah, I been there, been there, I know.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
And then I'm and you know, I'm getting her ready
to start grade two. I've been you know, busy creating
lots of new contents and back to school content, some
some other really cool stuff that's been going on my
channel and of course continuing with my partnership with LG
as the brand ambassador.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Congratulations.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah, I've been following your career and I love talking
to experts in their space. Pun intended so clean my
space a very popular YouTube platform, and you're on other
social media channels as well. We've got you today to
talk about this. As I mentioned, this intersection of tech
and cleaning, so that can help reduce the burden. And
I've been there, by the way, with three kids who

(06:00):
have attended overnight camp, coming back to those duffel bags
full of dirty, smelly laundry. Yeah, it's a painstaking chore,
but for most people it's just the regular weekly or
bi weekly wash or maybe.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
You do it even more than that.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
So, especially when school starts, every minute counts, let's face it,
So please talk to us about how home appliances can
actually help us navigate that chaos.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Where would you like to start?

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Yeah, so, you know, when I think about back to
school as a season, let's call it, it's really about
getting that routine back in order. So it's back to routine,
back to activities, you know, I'm putting my daughter's calendar
together and I'm scheduling at Acro swim. You know, all
of the activities are coming back, and I have to
start thinking about what my day is going to look like,

(06:46):
how I'm going to get dinner on the table at
a certain time, when I'm prepping lunch. You know, all
of that routine is coming back. And the cool thing
about LG and their appliances is that they really know
how to make technology simplify your life. And this is
great when things feel so out of control to have

(07:07):
that reliable, efficient technology to really help streamline the processes,
specifically in the kitchen and the laundry room. Like you
are saying, So, what I think is pretty cool is
that some of these appliances can almost anticipate your needs.
Take for example, my refrigerator. I have just a regular
run of the mill kitchen. I needed a slide in fridge,

(07:29):
you know, just something that is counter depth and the
one that I have is called the LG Counterdepth Max Refrigerator.
And what's great about it is its size. It's got
these really deep drawers, it's got adjustable shelves. But what
I love love is that it has one shelf that
can actually roll back in half, so it can handle
a very tall or large capacity item, which is great

(07:51):
for meal prepping, something that I have to do, you know,
when I'm thinking about how to feed my daughter and
myself and everyone else throughout the week. And also when
it comes to prepping for lunches ahead of time, you
can really stack containers and keep things nice and organized,
and then for posting or cleanups. LG has their smart
top control dishwasher, and that's a total game changer for
busy lifestyles because it's got the industry leading one hour

(08:15):
wash and dry cycle. So what this means, Mark is
you can load the dishwasher, run it through, and have
dry dishes in a sixty minute cycle. Wild And you know,
one of my favorite features about my washing machine is
what's called easy Dispense, and this allows you to load
up your machine with your favorite detergent and fabric softener

(08:35):
or fabric rints, and then the machine knows exactly how
much product to dispense with each load, and that has
to do with how it uses AI to sense what
load is coming in and how much is needed. So
it just takes the guesswork out of everything, less mess,
less time spent doing your laundry, and less thinking so

(08:56):
we could use our brain power for something else.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
And speaking of AI, we're going to get more into
that in a moment. But those are awesome practical examples
of maximizing space, keeping things organized, and really just helping
out families who are usually very busy this time of
year especially. It's also on a related note about energy efficiency.
I'm one of those dads who yells about shutting the
fridge door because of energy waste, and so I love

(09:21):
that with the insta view, Yeah, you can knock on
the door on some of those fridges.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
I don't know if you.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
Have that model, but you can see inside without even
opening the door, so you can see what you want
to eat.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
I love it.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
Yeah, you can see inside, you can check on your drinks,
you know, and just only open that door to get
what you need. That door is actually there just for
your most accessible items, so I keep things like butter jam,
condiments and beverages there so that way, you know, you
don't have to open the fridge and let all of
that energy escape when you're just going to quickly grab
something too. It's a very clever design awesome.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Yeah, all right, so you've given us a couple of
great examples for some kitchen and laundry appliances. No doubt
that there's a lot of quote unquote smart capabilities baked
into these devices as well.

Speaker 5 (10:03):
Pun intended again understatements.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, can you tell us more about what the LG
Think q app can do to further free up time
and simplify household management?

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Oh yeah, I mean, you know, Mark, you're in the
tech space, and you know that pretty much anything under
the sun at this point has an app. And it's
almost like we've faced app exhaustion because we're like, oh gosh,
I have to download another app for this or that.
But the LG Think q app is one of those
apps that I am using just about every day. What's
so cool about it is that it's almost like an

(10:37):
expansion pack, if you will, for your appliance, and it
allows you to fully customize it and get the most
out of it. And you can do so much with
the LG thinkq app, you know, for things like washers
and dryers. The Lgthink q app allows you to download
additional cycles that the machine doesn't come with, and they're
constantly adding new things to their app as well, so

(10:58):
you can update the app and get more on your appliance.
So one of the cycles that I love from my
washing machine, just as an example, is the dnim cycle
because Denham has to be washed differently than just a
normal load of clothing.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
More with Melissa Maker, the host of Clean my Space,
when we return on teck it Out, a lot more
to get to with these high tech appliances.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Stick with us, We'll be right back with more check
it Out.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Listen to check it Out whenever you want to find
the check it Out podcast, did I Too, or wherever
you get your podcasts.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Welcome back to check it Out. We cover cybersecurity a
lot on this program and how you can best protect
yourself in the digital age, even if you're not super
tech savvy. One part of the solution is securely shopping online.
And so I'm thrilled about my partnership with Visa on
tech it Out, as they've made some significant investments in
fraud prevent over the past five years, as much as

(12:02):
ten billion dollars yes that's billion with a B, to
support Visa's brand promise to protect the financial information of
individuals and businesses. Zero liability means peace of mind when
you shop online using your Visa card. There can be
no half measures when it comes to cybersecurity, which is
why the company takes an aggressive and multi layered approach

(12:22):
to combating the rising threat of malicious software and other
threats by well funded and global criminal enterprises. Read more
about Visa and how securing the world's payments is priority
one at Visa dot com slash security. That's Visa dot
Com slash Security. We're chatting with Melissa Maker, host of
clean MySpace on YouTube and other social media platforms. She

(12:46):
also has a book and merchandise line, and she in
partnership with LG is chatting with us about high tech appliances.
True story, My wife Kelly and I were out for
a walk with another couple in our neighborhood and at
one point our friend looked at her watch and she's like, oh,
my laundry cycle is done, and she had the thinkq app,
So she got pushed in notification to her phone, which

(13:06):
then got pushed to her wrist just to let her
know that when we got back from the walk, she
was going to take the laundry out, which is really
so convenient when you think about it. Plus the remote
start as well, which is awesome. And when you're at home,
there's also voice support, right Melissa, If you own a
smart speaker or smart TV, including those from LG, you
can actually use your voice to access the thinkq app

(13:27):
as well.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
Yes, they integrate with Google Assistant and Amazon a Leccess,
so it's very convenient when you can just say, hey,
I don't want to activate mine, but you can just say,
hey blank, you know, right, pre heat the oven to this,
or hey blank, how much longer is left on my
washing machine cycle? It just adds that actual layer of convenience.
You know, when you're sitting with the kids and doing

(13:49):
homework or you know, just generally feeling harried and you
want to check in on your appliance, you don't have
to run and check that out.

Speaker 6 (13:56):
You know.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
One other thing Mark I want to mention about the
LG ThinQ app is how great it is at helping
us save energy by having the ability, like your friend,
to sort of check in on that load. When you're
at home. You can also remote start your appliance, which
is pretty cool. And one of the things I like
to do is I'll let's say, load up my washing
machine or load up my dishwasher, and then I will

(14:19):
either schedule it or remote start it to run after
seven pm.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Yeah, my family knows that I'm a stickler for that
as well. After seven pm or before seven am where
I live, it's more efficient to run your big appliances then.
And so, yeah, you could schedule it through the app.
You could get it all ready and then through the
app say don't start until seven oh five pm kind
of thing.

Speaker 4 (14:40):
Right, Yeah, there are many different ways to do it
with your appliances, but you can also use the Algae
thinkq app. And I just think that's brilliant because again,
when you're busy with the kids, when you're at hockey
practice and you're like, oh my gosh, I forgot to
do this or I need to check in on that,
Like that app is there, it really does support you.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Just a minute or so left with Melissa Maker. She's
of cour Or, the host of clean MySpace on YouTube.
She's also a social media star on other platforms, and
we have her today as an LG brand ambassador talking
about their high tech appliances both in the laundry room
and in the kitchen, how it can help busy households
this fall as we get back to school and back

(15:18):
to life.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
On a related note, we've been talking a.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Lot about AI lately.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Is LG incorporating artificial intelligence into its appliances? And if so,
can you give us an example of how it improves
the user experience?

Speaker 4 (15:32):
You know, Mark, long before AI became a buzzword and
something that we were reading about and hearing about every
day in the news, LG has been working to integrate
AI into their appliances and into the user experience. And
it's actually it's become such a big thing for them
that they've changed the way that they talk about AI. Internally,

(15:52):
they call it affectionate intelligence because they want it to
be so useful and meaningful for cons like us that
that's how they think about it. That's how they shift
the mindset. So it's not just about like, oh, we
want to use AI. It's a buzzword. They have been
thinking about this for years and it shows. So I
want to give you a couple of examples, and this one,

(16:14):
I think is it's so easy to understand when I
give you this comparison. Remember when we used to drive
around before the days of GPS, you just had to
get on the road and hope for the best, you know,
hope that you got somewhere and that you took the
most efficient route, the route that you always take, and
you know, hope that there wasn't construction or an accident
or something like that. Well, before LG integrated this type

(16:38):
of AI into their washing machine, you know, we would
just select a cycle and hope that our clothes got clean.
But now what LG has in their washing machine is
something called Artificial Intelligence Direct Drive.

Speaker 5 (16:50):
What this does.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
Instead of just using that set it and forget it
cycle and sort of a general one size fits all
approach to laundry, is it uses AI to detect the
weight and the fabric softness and the soil level of
each load so that it can then change the way
that it runs its cycle and get you the most
optimized clean in the least amount of time. So your

(17:14):
clothes are coming out cleaner, it's using less resources, and
it's gentler on your clothing. So it's sort of like
before we had GPS and then driving with GPS and
getting somewhere the most efficient route. We can do the
same thing with laundry using LG'SAIDD, and they have the
same technology baked into the dryer by the way, so
that's called AI dry. And again you put your clothing

(17:37):
in there and it just uses AI to optimally detect
the moisture level in there, and then it knows exactly
what it needs to do. So no energy wasted, no overdrying.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Awesome, Melissa, Where can our listeners find more info?

Speaker 4 (17:51):
So to learn more about any of these appliances and
the LG thinkq app, they can go to LG dot com.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
All right, LG dot com and on social media for
Melissa mak Er, it's at clean my space.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
Thanks for carving out some time for us today, My pleasure.

Speaker 2 (18:05):
When we return on tech it out, what you need
to know about the end of support for Windows ten
coming up mid October.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Stick with us, We'll be right back.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
I want to follow Mark Google up, Mark with a
C and Saltzman with a Z breaking down geeks peak
into street speak. This is check it out to check
it out with technology columnist, author and TV personality Mark Saltzman.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
Welcome back everyone. You're listening to check it out. If
you're still using the Windows ten operating system, an important
update is coming that you need to know about. So
who better than digital lifestyle expert Mario Armstrong and good
friend to this program to explain what you need to know. Hi, Mario,
thanks so much for your time today.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
Mark.

Speaker 7 (18:57):
It's good to be on with you. And this is
it's a really important milestone, and I really want to
say thanks for you shining the light on it. You
always keep us a breast of all the technology and
everything we need to know. And I partnered with Microsoft
on this one to really help give the information and
the steps to help people move forward. Because after October
fourteenth of this year, twenty twenty five, support ends for
Windows ten.

Speaker 6 (19:17):
So it's really important to keep your devices protected.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
Yeah, so let's unpock that and really get to understand
what that means. So Windows ten very popular operating system,
but it's been out for a long while.

Speaker 6 (19:29):
Yeah, man, like a decade, right exactly.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yeah. I think at one point it's the world's most
popular operating system, which is no small feat. But I've
been loving Windows eleven over the last couple of years,
and I guess well, I'm going to leave it to
you to explain what we need to know about changing,
whether it's at upgrade or other ways to protect ourselves. So, yeah,
can you tell us why this is taking place now?
Because it has been a decade.

Speaker 7 (19:52):
Sure, and that's pretty much where it starts. It's like, okay,
it's been ten years, everybody, it's been a great ride.
I know change can scare some people, but this is
a good time to really get this upgrade because the
support is going to end, and it's just a natural
life cycle of technology and devices and operating systems.

Speaker 6 (20:09):
So we're kind of used to this.

Speaker 7 (20:10):
But here's what really will happen with your Windows ten device.
It will still function, it will still work, but it
will no longer receive those important security updates or feature improvements.

Speaker 6 (20:21):
And so that's where the real worry is.

Speaker 7 (20:23):
Because the threats like viruses, malware, phishing, scams, all these things,
it just becomes much more vulnerable for you, your data
and your information to be attacked.

Speaker 6 (20:34):
So that's why this milestone is really important.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
So that's really what's happening, and Microsoft just wants to
make sure everyone is aware of this, especially not only
personal PCs, but also businesses. And so there are a
couple of different options. One is to upgrade to Windows eleven,
and I'll walk you through how you can check to
see if your current system can just do that, and
then we have some other options if that doesn't work
for you.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
All right, thanks for breaking that down. So let's talk
about these options. If your piece can support Windows eleven,
many but not all, we'll be able to How do
we find that out?

Speaker 8 (21:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (21:06):
Okay, so I'm gonna walk through the steps. Grab a
pen and paper or hit record, because here's.

Speaker 6 (21:10):
What we're gonna do. You're going to logo one.

Speaker 7 (21:13):
Obviously you'll be on your Windows ten device, and then
what I want you to do is I want you
to go to start, then click settings, click update and security,
and then I want you to look for an option
to select it's going to say Windows Update or to
read Windows Update there and then finally check for updates
to see if you can just upgrade your device, no costs,
no problems, and then you'll be able to upgrade to eleven.

Speaker 6 (21:33):
So that's that's one option.

Speaker 7 (21:35):
Now, if your Windows ten PC can't upgrade, you still
have some other options.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
You could do what Mark.

Speaker 7 (21:40):
Has and he has a brand new and upgrade to
a new Windows eleven or even a Copilt plus PC. Faster,
more secure, stronger performance, latest features.

Speaker 6 (21:51):
Everything, to keep your productive.

Speaker 7 (21:52):
But if you need more time, some people don't, you know,
they need to have a little bit more patience. And
so if you need that, then you can enroll in
the Extended Security Updates program. So if you have your
own laptop, you can enroll by using Windows Backup, Microsoft Rewards, or.

Speaker 6 (22:08):
You could pay a one time fee of thirty dollars.

Speaker 7 (22:10):
If you're a business, you can subscribe to Extending Security Updates.
It'll cost you sixty one dollars per device, but also
for you as the business. Your subscription can be renewed
annually for up to three years, so it can give
you some time and space if you need that.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
So, Mario Armstrong, we've got three options here for our
listeners who are still on Windows ten post October fourteen.
One is and you walked us through how to do
it to see if your Windows PC can support an
upgrade to Windows eleven and just to confirm there's no
cost to do so, no cost to do so for
that's awesome. Second is two budget permitting buy a new
Windows PC. I would say there's never been a better time.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
To do so.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
You touched on Copilot Plus, which is really powerful yet
easy to use AI that can help you, whether it's
for work or play or for school, and so many
other bells and whistles to Windows eleven over Windows ten.
That is, in my opinion, an easy justification to pick
up a new PC. It is a great time of
the year, by the way, as there are some pre
Black Friday sales already even though it's end of September

(23:09):
early October. There's some great deals out there to be had.
And then the true third option is to extend your
service for security protection on your existing Windows ten. No
bit of a stop gap solution, but at least it exists.
But yeah, I'd up for again option two. If you
can't pick up a new Windows eleven PC or Copilot
plus PC, is there a website Mario where we can

(23:30):
explore all these options, because some of our listeners may
have been driving they couldn't shot down how to see
if they're eligible for Windows eleven upgrade and so on.

Speaker 7 (23:38):
Right, yeah, and thank you for breaking it down, because
that's exactly right. And I just want everyone to also know,
like don't worry, Like I know one of your biggest
concerns is like where's my data going to go? So
Windows backup which is built into Windows ten, can help
you with your files, your photos, your settings and everything
to move to another device.

Speaker 6 (23:55):
If you have that question lingering in your head.

Speaker 7 (23:58):
But all the details are at this website, let me
give it to you a little long, so pay attention here.
It's Microsoft dot Com Slash Windows Slash end Dash of
Dash support. To get that Microsoft dot Com Slash Windows
last End Dash of Dash support.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
Or you can go to your favorite search engine and
type in Windows ten end of support. But make sure
it's the official Microsoft solution because there are some yeah,
let's say, nefarious types out there who may want to
divert you to another website and you think it's Microsoft,
but it's not. So do what Mario said, don't search
for it because just in case you fall on the
wrong site. It may sound daunting to those who aren't

(24:38):
tech savvy, but really these options are pretty simple to consider.
So thank you so much, Mario. As always, you know
how to break down GeekSpeak into street speak. Love having
you on this show, Mario. Where can we follow you
on your socials?

Speaker 7 (24:50):
I love being on the show with you as well
man and always being a part of you informing the
public and the audience like, your show is legendary. It's
been around for decades at least that's what it feels
like to me.

Speaker 5 (25:03):
Has it been don right?

Speaker 2 (25:04):
Well, in Canada, I'm fortunate to host the longest running
tech radio show at twenty six years.

Speaker 3 (25:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (25:11):
Yeah, but in the beautiful USFA it's Bencince twenty seventeen.
But yeah, I bring my thirty one years of experience
in writing articles about tech, I guess, but I appreciate
the compliment on the less.

Speaker 7 (25:21):
No, man, it's always that and when we see each other,
it's always the same love and support. So yeah, man,
Instagram is the best way to contact me. And also
if anybody is listening and they're like, hey, what was
that url again?

Speaker 6 (25:30):
What's that website?

Speaker 3 (25:32):
Just send me a.

Speaker 7 (25:32):
Message on Instagram. I'm easily found at Mario Armstrong.

Speaker 3 (25:36):
Yeah awesome. And then just a quick note before I
let you go.

Speaker 2 (25:38):
For those listening who work at a company and you're
ever looking to hire a motivational speaker, definitely consider Mario.
He's more than a one trick pony. Tech maybe his
main gig, but you got to see him talk, so
you can reach out to him on Instagram because he's
a great public speaker as well and does some really
great work there.

Speaker 7 (25:55):
I got one better, Okay, hire both of us to
come out to your next conference in du would be.

Speaker 3 (26:01):
Man love the way you're thinking.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
Thanks brother, all right, Mario Armstrong, thank you so much
for your time and for explaining this really important update
coming October fourteenth.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
Thanks so much, all right, Marks, Mark, take care.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
What does a pro photographer think of the new iPhones?
You'll find out when I chat with Tyler Stallman when
we return on tech it.

Speaker 1 (26:19):
Out, breaking down geek speak into street speak. Check it
out holosted by Mark Saltzman.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
Welcome back to tech it Out.

Speaker 9 (26:38):
So I'm here with Tyler Stallman, professional photographer, YouTuber podcaster,
and I would call a photographer's photographer where I've seen
so many even pro level photographers come up to you
here at Apple Park in Cooper, Tino.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
That must be flattering to have that kind of reputation
in the industry and well deserved.

Speaker 5 (26:57):
Really nice to meet you for the first time as well.

Speaker 8 (26:59):
Absolutely, Yeah, I love that everybody here has the same
interests and we are just passionate about both tech and photography,
so a lot to talk about.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
Yeah, for sure, and thank you for carving out some
time to chat, specifically about the new iPhone family and
what does that mean for those who do like to
take photos and videos even if they're not anywhere near professional.

Speaker 5 (27:19):
Why don't we start with iPhone Air.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
I noticed there's just one camera lens on the back
of the device, and of course a front facing camera.
What's your impressions of this super thin iPhone from a
photography or videography standpoint.

Speaker 8 (27:30):
Well, it benefits from everything Apples has been doing for
years now, So the main camera is as good as
it's always been. Most of your photos will look as
good as every other eye. But the exciting part, like
what I am really pumped for, is the new selfie camera,
which is now a square sensor, which might sound kind
of stranger. You're used to photos being either tall or wide,
but now you're not really choosing as you hold your camera.

(27:52):
So that means when you hold your camera vertically, which
is usually more comfortable, that's how it fits in your
hand more easily. You can switch back and forth between
a tall or a wide image just by tapping a
button or The phone will also detect things automatically, like
an extra person walks into frame, and now you're all
in the scene without having to think about it or
change the orientation in your hand.

Speaker 5 (28:12):
Love that all right?

Speaker 2 (28:13):
So it's now an eighteen megapixel front facing camera, so
more details, more dots or pixels that make up the image,
so everything's a lot more clear. And then, as you suggested,
the sensor is different so that you don't have to
change the orientation between landscape and portrait. It will automatically
adjust on the fly, or you can have AI do
the magic for you and put you in the center.
I think Apple calls that center stage where you know

(28:35):
you're doing like a FaceTime call. It'll always have you
front and center. But now you can choose between landscape
and portrait without even changing the phone orientation.

Speaker 5 (28:42):
I agree, that's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
For the rear facing camera that I alluded to earlier,
that's a fusion camera, so it's a combination of optical
and digital technology.

Speaker 5 (28:50):
So maybe not ideal for zooming in.

Speaker 2 (28:53):
At a subject that's far away compared to the pro models,
which we'll get to in a moment, But for everyday photography,
you think the iPhone Air is good enough for most?

Speaker 1 (29:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (29:01):
Absolutely, if you're somebody that doesn't feel the need to
zoom in and out a lot. It's absolutely perfect. You
can zoom in a bit, it'll crop in. Basically, that's
why they have this forty megapixel camera. They have extra
pixels so you can crop and it still looks great,
but you don't get all of the benefits of the
other two cameras.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
Okay, so that's a good segue into iPhone seventeen Pro
and the larger iPhone seventeen Pro Max. From a photography
and videography standpoint, what impressed you the most out of
those new devices.

Speaker 8 (29:30):
The big news was the four times telephoto lens, which
can digitally zoom into eight times, so you can really
get a lot of reach see things that are extremely
far away, great for things like a concert, whereas the
four times be more a portrait, like you're taking photos
of one person and you want them to have a
little bit of blur behind them.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
Maybe.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
So there's three cameras if I'm not mistaken, or three
lenses rather on the back of the iPhone seventeen Pro family.
There's the regular camera, there's the telephoto lens, and then
there's the ultra wide angle lens.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
Is that right?

Speaker 5 (29:59):
And there forty eight megapixels each. That's the first time
Apple has done that.

Speaker 8 (30:03):
Yeah, that's really exciting for somebody that cares about all
of their photos turning out as good as possible. Is
they are now all the same quality. You've got bigger
sensors on all of them, which means less noise, better
low lights. Because in the past I would sometimes choose
the main camera just because it's the best quality. Now
you're getting similar quality across all three of the lenses.

Speaker 5 (30:23):
A lot of the.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Content creators in the audience on Tuesday, we're clearly happy
about the ability to record a video with one camera
and the second camera is recording video on you simultaneously,
kind of like picture and picture.

Speaker 5 (30:36):
What did you think of that?

Speaker 8 (30:37):
Yeah, I love this idea. So you can basically film
reactions and most of the frame is filled up by
whatever you're looking at, and then you're in the corner smiling, laughing,
being scared. I don't know whatever you reaction happens to be,
but it's very easy to film that. You don't need
special third party software. It's just built in to the camera.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
And you can also move the little window around if
it's obstructing your view. So the idea again is that
you're recording from both cameras at the same time, front
and back if you want to share after the fact
your reaction as well as.

Speaker 3 (31:04):
What you're recording.

Speaker 2 (31:04):
So again, content creators, influencers, those kinds of jobs I
think are definitely going to benefit from that, like I
don't know your kid playing hockey, for example, and then
Tyler before I let you go, we are chatting with
Tyler Stallman. He has celebrated and seasoned photographer. Pro photographers
are now using iPhone instead of gear that could previously
cost tens of thousands of dollars. We've seen iPhone being

(31:25):
used to shoot TV commercials and now TV shows and even.

Speaker 5 (31:28):
Movies like Hollywood Blockbusters.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
Is that really possible on an iPhone seventeen pro or Promax?

Speaker 8 (31:34):
Yeah. What's amazing is they've tried it before. They've shot
a film on the iPhone, but you could tell in
the past and looked like the phone. Now you really
cannot tell. It looks as good as a traditional Hollywood movie.
So a lot of pros are very excited about some
of the high end features in here. You don't need
to worry about if you don't know what they are,
but for me.

Speaker 1 (31:50):
I love that it's in there.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
So for novices or pro's overall, it seems happy about
the new launch iPhone Air and iPhone seventeen Pro and Promax,
which is a slightly larger version of the same phone.

Speaker 5 (32:02):
This has really been helpful. Thank you so much. What's
the best place to follow you on social media?

Speaker 8 (32:06):
If you find me on YouTube, I've got lots of
tutorials to take better iPhone photos. I'm at Stallman on YouTube.

Speaker 2 (32:11):
At Stallman and that's Sta l m An. Thank you
so much for your time, Tyler. I hope you have
a great rest of your time here at Apple part
Thanks for having me Mark. Speaking of your iPhone, I
talked last week about sand Disc now offering a flash
storage solution. It's simply called the sand Disk Phone Drive
USB C. So if you have one of the newer
iPhones that have a USB C connector just plug it

(32:33):
in underneath it launches the sand disc gap. It'll then
back up all your photos and videos for you, as
well as your contacts, so you can put it away
for safe keeping, or plug it into a laptop or
desktop to copy files over and if you're running out
of storage on your iPhone. You can also delete those
files on your phone to free up more space again
without having to.

Speaker 3 (32:51):
Pay a subscription fee.

Speaker 2 (32:52):
Love it SanDisk dot com has more on these affordable
phone drive for USB C. When we return on tech Out,
I'm going to talk about preserving the battery life of
your smartphone so you could get more years out of
it by not doing something that you're probably doing every day.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
We'll be right back with more. Check it out.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
Follow Mark Saltzman on Facebook, on Twitter, on Instagram. Listen
to check it out whenever you want.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Welcome back everyone you're listening to check it out powered
by Visa. All Right, I wrote a piece for Reader's
Digests not published yet, and it's about one thing that
you're probably doing every day with your smartphone that's hurting
its longevity. What is it, you ask, Well, whether you
are on iPhone or Android, charging up your phone to

(33:49):
one hundred percent and or leaving it plugged in overnight
can significantly reduce your batteries health. Basically, overcharging your smartphone
keeping it full generates unnecessary heat, which puts stress on
lithium ion batteries, and that accelerates chemical aging. It's just
how lithium ion batteries are constructed. So while you may

(34:11):
like seeing that one hundred percent icon in the top
of your iPhone or Android, you're limiting your phone's lifespan unnecessarily,
so that means you're going to have to buy new
phones sooner than you need to. But the good news
is there are some tools now built into phones that
can charge your phone to eighty percent and leave it there,
which is what the experts are recommending. If you're on iPhone,

(34:34):
the feature is called optimized battery charging. And when it's enabled,
and I'll tell you how to do it in a moment,
your iPhone will delay charging past eighty percent in certain
situations as your iPhone uses on device machine learning to
learn your daily charging routine, says Apple, so that this
activates only when your iPhone predicts it will be connected

(34:54):
to a charger for an extended period of time, like
if you plug it in and.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
Go to sleep.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
So what you do is you go to settings and
then battery and then finally charging, and then you can
select an option. You can choose a charge limit between
eighty and one hundred percent, the lower number the better,
closer to eighty If you're on an older iPhone fourteen
and earlier, it's similar.

Speaker 3 (35:15):
You go to.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
Settings, then Battery and then a section called Battery Health
and Charging, and you can turn on optimize battery charging
there if you're on an Android phone, and it will
vary a little based on what kind of Android phone
you have, like a Samsung Galaxy or a Google Pixel.
You go to your phone settings area, find the battery
tab or Power and Device Care tab, and then look
for options like battery health or charging optimization or something

(35:39):
like that. Select it, and then again say that you
want your phone to not charge past eighty percent, and
that would really help out your battery life long.

Speaker 3 (35:48):
Term on your iPhone or Android phone.

Speaker 2 (35:50):
A couple of other things to keep in mind with
your smartphone to extend its life. Keep your phone away
from high heat and on the contrary, freezing conditions leaving
it in a vehicle in the summer or winter. Both
can permanently damage your battery and the internal components. Secondly,
invest in a quality phone case. A good case will
prevent your screen from cracking for when, not if, you

(36:13):
drop it. Some people also like a screen protector as well.
Keep your phone clean regularly cleaning the dust, lint, and
debris from those little ports and speakers prevent blockages, which
can also add to overheating. iPhone users sometimes like buying
Apple Care. It's like a little extended warranty or insurance program.
It may give you some additional peace of mind, and

(36:34):
depending on the damage, you can get your phone replaced
for free. Number four, Update your operating system and app updates,
as they often include performance improvements and battery optimizations. And
it also doesn't hurt to uninstall apps and delete unnecessary
files to free up storage space, which can also improve
performance and speed. And finally, dim your screen. Turn down

(36:57):
the brightness of your iPhone or Android phone to maybe
half to preserve battery life. Also, phones are designed to
turn off their screen after detecting inactivity, so they're not
using power to illuminate their display when you're not looking
at it, and you can shorten that time, that idle time,
so the screen goes to sleep sooner, which will help
extend battery life. If you want to follow me on

much power and resources like water to cool these data
centers around the world, what we're potentially doing to Mother
Earth by using AI, and just ways to reduce it.
And also positive story about how AI is being used
to help fight climate change by running models and unlocking

(38:01):
some really cool solutions, which kind of turns the whole
narrative on its head. But I really try to explore
all of it in this USA Today piece, so you'll
see that on my social media this past week. If
