Claire Rafferty is a former professional footballer who made her name as a left-back and left winger, most notably during her time at Chelsea, where she made over 100 appearances. She also played for Millwall Lionesses, becoming a first-team regular at just 14, and later joined West Ham United before retiring in 2019.
On the international stage, Claire represented England across various age levels before making her senior debut in 2010. She went on to feature in two World Cups and was part of the Great Britain squad at the London 2012 Olympics. Despite suffering three serious ACL injuries throughout her career, Claire kept coming back, becoming a regular in the England side that finished third at the 2015 World Cup.
Since retiring from football, Claire has built a successful media career and now works in a commercial role at Chelsea, bringing together her experience in elite sport with her business background. She’s also passionate about championing the women’s game. She now helped launch The Missing Shirt – a retro England women’s football kit created to honour past players who never had a kit designed for them. It’s a powerful reminder of how far the women’s game has come and the work still to do.Highlights from Toby Gribben's Friday afternoon show on Shout Radio. Featuring chat with top showbiz guests. Clear Rafferty is a Farmer, England international and Chelsea footballer
who made over one hundred appearances in the FA Women's
Super League. She's now helping launch The Missing Shirt, the
first ever retro England kit made specific for women, and
Clear is joining us. Just Know how are you today?

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Hello, I'm good, Thank you. How are you doing?

Speaker 1 (02:07):
I'm excellent. Thanks. Now, before we get into the Messing Shirt,
I'd love to take you back. What was it that
first drew you into football and what were those early
days like?

Speaker 4 (02:18):
For me?

Speaker 5 (02:19):
It was actually watching the men's footballers on TV. And
the reason for that is because there weren't any female
players that were role models for me.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
Very much driven by my brother.

Speaker 5 (02:29):
He wanted someone to go and go in the garden
and in the end I ended up chucking him in
going and me being out on pitching in the garden,
which was my Wembley for the majority of my youth.
I remember running up at the steps into the garden
thinking one day, hopefully I can be a footballer, but
actually it was more a dream that I didn't think
was possible and it ended out really well.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
And You've had such an incredible career, especially with Chelsea,
over one hundred appearances there. So what do you remember
most fondly about that period?

Speaker 5 (02:58):
When I first joined Chelsea, it was prior to Ema
Hay's coming in, so it was great timing when she
did eventually come in and change the whole dynamics of
that team. She removed quite a lot of players. In
terms of the level of the talent, it wasn't quite there.
So that ruthlessness that she implemented into the side led
us to all the victories that we had over the years.
So twenty fifteen the first ever FA Cup, first ever

(03:21):
League win for Chelsea, and then the rest is history
in terms of the amount of trophies and the way
that Chelsea have dominated. I'm just really happy to have
played a part in that.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
And you've represented your country, not just England but also
Great Bretain at the Olympics, which must have been pretty surreal.
So what's that moment like when you're stepping it onto
the pets to represent your country. I mean, do you
treat it just like any other game or is it
maybe more exciting or a begger burden to carry.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
I think it's a combination of everything.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
You have that excitement, the anticipation, that added pressure as
well representing your country, but also at the same time
it's the pinnacle, so you almost feel like you deserve
to be there.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
And yeah, I.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
Tried as much as possible to enjoy those moments. Can't
say my nerves didn't get the better of me in
some occasions, playing in front of some incredible crowds, especially
in the lights in twenty fifteen World Cup. But yeah,
very special moments and ones that are treasure forever, and
in particular obviously the Olympics as well. Home Olympics in
twenty twelve, playing in front of a sold out Wembley
Stadium was an incredible moment for sure.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Absolutely No, you're helping to launch the Messing shirt, which
is the first ever Retrol England Women's cat. Can you
just talk us through the idea of it, because this
actually really shocked me, to be honest, that the kits
weren't made specifically for women. They were just sort of
hand me downs for men.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
That Shockingly, up until twenty nineteen, we had to play
in men's kits. So from the first Euros back in
nineteen eighty four, all the way throughout that period we
were playing in kits that were not made for us.
That just makes you feel like you're an after fort
and ultimately the kits were oversized, uncomfortable and not made
for the best performance and for a women's footballer. And
what this shirt is it symbolizes what we never had,

(05:07):
So that missing kit and the missing shirt that is
the focus of that. Ultimately, the design the fantastic designer
from Hattie Crover and the producer of Foudi's what the
shirt is inspired by is a snapshot back at some
of those retro kits throughout the years, but also having
a look at where we are now and into the future.

(05:28):
So the vision is very much around celebrating the trailblazers
that came prior to my generation. So from nineteen eighty four.
On the sleeves, you actually had the initials of those
players that came before. On the back, you then also
have names of blindnesses and the year that they were
not able to wear a women's shirt on the international stage.

(05:49):
So I'm actually wearing a kit right now. On the
back of my shirt, it's got my name and fifteen
and twenty fifteen was the opportunity for me to be
able to wear a women's shirt, and that wasn't the
So this shirt that wearing right now allows me to
celebrate that moment, feeling comfortable and supported.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
How did wearing a men's shirt affect your performance and
your confidence? Do you think that it made a big difference.

Speaker 5 (06:14):
Yeah, one hundred percent. You felt like you weren't meant
to be there. I think for me, I actually used
to physically change the kits to feel comfortable. I used
to cut the sleeves, you know. I went to ask
the medical staff to borrow scissors in order to cut
the sleeves in order to tie up the back of
the shirt because it was too big and too baggy
and just was cleaning in places that cleaning where it's

(06:36):
not made for women. So Ultimately, it's about it's now
being produced and created for performance, and at the time
that wasn't the case because it didn't fit and didn't
allow me to perform, because I couldn't move the way
I wanted to move, And you don't want to step
out onto pitch feeling way down, and that's exactly how
I felt, way down by a kit that wasn't for me.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
So what was your initial reaction when this idea first
came about for the missing.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
Shirt, being able to make a statement that celebrates the
legacy of the players that came before, where we're at
now and the future and that investment into the grassroots.
For me, it was something that is really close to
my heart, mostly, you know, being able to really celebrate
those trailblazers and all the efforts that they put in
that aren't celebrated.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
So yeah, it was something.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
That was really close to my heart, something that it's
important to tell the story of those that came before
and those that are coming in that next generation. And
I think, as I mentioned, it's not just about the past,
it's about what's coming next.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
And obviously we've got the Euros coming up.

Speaker 5 (07:38):
What a great moment to actually allow people to buy
these shirts, so you can buy them at faulues dot
com and you can celebrate as I mentioned that the past, present,
and future.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
And you're not just raising awareness, but you're also raising funds.
So where exactly well the proceeds from the shirt go.

Speaker 6 (07:58):

Speaker 6 (08:27):
A cast is home to the world's best podcasts, including
the David McWilliams podcast I'm Grandmam and the one you're listening.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
To right now. And what kind of difference will it make?

Speaker 5 (08:42):
It will go directly back into women's grassroots and whether
that be kits themselves, infrastructure obviously, but all the kind
of ins and out day to day that go into
making grassroots football work. Lots of people volunteer at that level,
and the accessibility is one of the main features. So
a look, we've quite big strides in terms of how
far we've come as a nation in women's football book,

(09:05):
grassroots is where it will starts and it's the most
important stepping stone in order to create that next lion S.
So there's still work to do. This kit will help
towards that, but yeah, it is obviously around the investment.
Access everything matters, So ultimately this shirt is a starting
point in that essence with the focus on being seen,
valued and belonging in the game.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
And when you see today's Lionesses walk out and fetied
Besport Cats, does it feel like a full circle moment
for you?

Speaker 5 (09:33):
Yeah, it's amazing to see that. It's such a small
detail that people probably won't even realize the transition over
the period. But when you compare just six seven years ago,
you put the players up against each other, you'll see
how ill fitting that the kits are and I think
you know it helps the success of the Lionesses. You know,
these small details and make you feel valued and make

(09:55):
you feel pride. You know, not just in your appearance,
but you know that you're representing your country and you
want to feel like, you know, we put all the
hard work in to pay for your country. I think
it's at least you can expect in order to have
a kit that actually fits you. So it will help
towards their success. It seems like it already has. Obviously
we won the Euros back in twenty twenty two, so hopefully, yeah,

(10:17):
it will do the same moving forward.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
Now the Euros are of course underway and England, as
we all know, are the defending champions. How do you
rate their chances for this year?

Speaker 4 (10:28):
Yeah, it's going to be a difficult one.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
They're in a really really tough group facing France and
the Netherlands and Whales as well, so very different opponents
but equally tricky to overcome. So I think it's going
to be one game at a time, and it sounds
football cliche, but I think it's going to be tricky
for them to go back and win the trophy again.

(10:50):
I think Spain are very strong, and then we've got
the likes of Germany as well and France that are
in England's group. So I'm hoping for another final, whether
we've got enough to to beat Spain or whoever they
face in the final is something to be seen, so
but a positive. Hopefully they prove me wrong that they
can just go and win it easily.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Absolutely, And what would your advice be to the squad
right now?

Speaker 5 (11:13):
I think it would be to focus on themselves. Stop
listening or you know, turn your phone off, don't don't
listen to the outside noise, because there will be a
lot of conversation about the pressure of winning before obviously
players that were not selected or have retired, you know,
the experience that they're now missing. You know, there is
that kind of negative angle on the lineesss. But it'd
be very much about trusting themselves. I'm sure that each

(11:36):
of those players knows exactly what they're expected to do
when they get on the pitch, and Serena Veigman will
have installed the mentality for them to overcome whatever opponents.
So yeah, just kind of put your headphones in, don't
listen to anyone else, and just just do what you're
there to do, which is play football.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
And is there one player across the tournament, in any
team that you're the most excited to watch?

Speaker 5 (11:59):
A couple, But I'll just answer one for me. It's
Spain's Gonzales. I did actually catch a bit of her
last night in the Spanish game. She is kind of
like a poacher, slightly different to the way that Spain
typically pay staying higher up the pitch. In terms of England,
for me, Lauren James is always an exciting one to

(12:20):
watch as well. So both of those are going to
be battling. I'm sure for top goalscorer or something along
those lines.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
Well, where are we able to get the Messing shirt?
It's available for a pre sale from today right, yes.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
So you can buy their shirt from foudies dot com.

celebrate the legacy and what's to come brilliant.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
