Richard Fitzwilliams is a distinguished royal commentator, film critic, public relations consultant, and lecturer who has given over a thousand television and radio interviews across the globe. Known for his authoritative insights, crisp delivery, and deep understanding of royal protocol, Richard has become a trusted voice on matters of monarchy and ceremonial tradition.
As an expert on the British Honours system, Richard brings timely and informed commentary on key moments such as the King’s Birthday Honours, the latest of which—due to be announced tonight—has already generated headlines with the leaked news of David Beckham’s anticipated knighthood.
With the Trooping the Colour set to take place tomorrow, Richard’s expertise will again be in demand. This year’s ceremony is particularly historic, marking the first time King Charles III will review the Coldstream Guards as they troop their colour, coinciding with the regiment’s 375th anniversary. The event will also include a moment of solemn reflection, with royals in uniform wearing black armbands and a one-minute silence observed to honour the 53 British citizens who lost their lives in the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171.
A former Editor of The International Who’s Who, Richard is renowned for his far-reaching network of contacts and his ability to provide fresh perspectives on both royal affairs and contemporary cinema. He is also a respected obituary writer and an eloquent analyst of the customs that continue to shape British public life.Highlights from Toby Gribben's Friday afternoon show on Shout Radio. Speaker 1 (01:13):
Richard Fitzwilliams is on the line with us here. Who's
a royal commentator and expert in the British honors system,
and it's quite timely that we've gone him on today
because the King's Birthday honor as will be announced later tonight,
and of course Tripping the Color will be tomorrow. So Hi, Richard,
how are you well?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
I'm looking forward to well, firstly the honors. I mean
we know that because it has been leaked that David
Beckham will be becoming a light and I have to
say I'm absolutely delighted because I mean, fifteen caps for England,
former captain the most here's the phenomenal. And I mean

(01:52):
also his charitable work helping to bring the Olympics to
London and twenty twelve. And also I'm delighted that Victoria
will become she's an obidian our own right, but should
become ladies because I remember, of course the Spice Girls
one of the top gold bands of all time. So

(02:14):
I do think that this is something should have happened
a long time ago, There's no question about it, but
there were reasons that it didn't.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Absolutely. I mean you've been saying for years, even on
this show, that David Beckham ought to get one, and
he might get one, but now he's finally getting the knighthood.
So why do you think it's this year that have
finally given it to him.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Well, there were reports that he had been involved with
a tax evation scheme that was certainly apparently not viewed
a particularly well by the authorities. I mean, so Garet's
Southgate he was apparently also involved and he has become

(02:57):
a knight and that was cleared that bridge. So he
had certain views on those who had held this up
and they were released in emails apparently in twenty seventeen.
So fair enough there has been a delay, but it
made the system seem very very sluggish because I mean
this was someone known worldwide. He was promoting Britain whenever

(03:20):
he could, and I mean everything from his tattoos to Adidas,
which apparently was the footwear. I mean, we were fascinated.
This is not a question of looking at gossip and
so forth, because there's been plenty of that. It's a
question of looking at merit. David Beckham is a phenomenon.
He's an extraordinary footballer. He's also someone who's done a

(03:44):
great deal for charity and he's done a great deal
for Britain and that is something that you know, philanthropy
plays a large part in the honor system these days.
It always should have, it does much more now and
Beckham is the perfect example. So this wee was welcome.
I do think also Tom Cruise, why not? I think
you should get rollery and lighthood because he again spends

(04:07):
so much time in Britain, is one of Hollywood's top stars.
He films that's been lawnously beneficial.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
And of course we know that David Beckham will be
getting one. Do you have any thoughts about who else
could get one this year or is it something that
you can't saycond guess.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Well, I don't know how we learned about this. I
mean one of the problems with the honor system is
that there appears from time to time to be a
mole in the work and some unleaking names, which isn't
a good idea because I mean that this is something
that those who are the recipients asked not to tell
the world, and in the theory, I mean this could

(04:44):
have led to some problems with it. I mean twenty sixteen,
for example, we had Barbara Windsor the fact she was
becoming a name that athlete, and also about twenty years
ago and thus in fact benefited the system. The honors
committee then was composed entirely of civil servants. They were

(05:05):
we didn't know who they were, and some of those
aspects of that. The fact Tim Henman got one to
quote add interest because he hadn't done a great deal
achieved a great deal of that tennis player. That's the thing,
helped to pave the way for a very drastic change
in the system, which was long overdue. We also had

(05:28):
three hundred names of those who'd done for a fewusdom
for one reason or another leaked, and that again is
over twenty years ago. But all I'm saying is the
leaks have periodically happened.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
There are some betting odds for who could get one
this year. Interestingly we've got Nigel Farage as odds of
one hundred to one, along with the Gallagher brothers. I mean,
do you think there's any chance that people like that
would get one or is it all just a bit
of a joke.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Well, I wouldn't say the honor system of the joke
at all. What I would say is, because it dates
back hundreds of years, that you have a variety of
on us. I mean the gift of the other than
the gift of so to speak, the Prime Minister as
advised by the Honors committees. I mean people can bedtime.
And I have thought the gallaghers, whether in factor pop

(06:15):
stars do tend to accept them when they're in their
fifties or perabs sold because I mean, it's not the
honor system hasn't got a great deal of street credit.
Remember are they?

Speaker 3 (06:28):
A cast recommends podcasts we look Hello.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
This is Jenny from Redroom podcast where we go down
a rabbit hole every single Monday. This season, we are
investigating the world of bad influencers, from digital cults to
crypto scams, all the way down to broadsters. The online
world has never been so full of lawyers. If you're
a fan of true crime, cled deep dives, or just
the weirder side of things, I think you'll love the show.

(06:51):
So for Redroom, wherever you get your podcasts, and join
me down the rabbit hole.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
A cast is home to the world's best podcasts, including
the critically acclaimed West Cork and the one you're listening
to right now.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Two thousand, half thousand roughly who get them every year.
The vast majority of those who don't work for the community,
philanthropic work and so forth, people who name you'd never know,
and so are basically we're arguing about. Usually we're arguing
about these celebrities or alternatively certain civil servants. Far fewer

(07:30):
get them now and far fewer should. But sometimes they
give them to people who don't deserve them, and then
that is where the system sometimes slips. Also is the
prime ministerial resignation on as they're in so many prime
ministers recently we've had a lot of that is again
linked to the system and doesn't do it any favors

(07:50):
because obviously you have individuals favored by politicians who were
the prime minister, and that isn't necessarily something that most
people want to see. But it honors the deserving on
the whole. And remember also it's got grades to it,
and those aids mean there's initiative and incentives one honor
and do you hope to get another.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Do you think the public takes the honor system more
or less seriously today than they did a generation ago?

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Well, I suspect a generation ago when and suddenly fifty
years ago, sixty years ago, far far more went to
civil sevens. It varies because obviously the newspaper coverage tends
to concentrate on the sensational, and I think when it
comes to individuals being honored for philanthropy, I think the

(08:41):
public does take it seriously. When it comes to politicians,
I think it's skeptical. But when it comes to well
known actors, actresses, figures who are obviously deserve it, whether
it's fashion designers or artists, I mean I think most
people will you know Texa, Anthony Hopkins and Mcallum, Sir

(09:02):
David Sushane so well.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Obviously, of course we've got the honors tonight, but also
tomorrow is trooping the Color. So what can we expect
from this year's spectacle.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Well, we can expect I think an impeccable display from
the coldstream Culty've just received a new color from King
Charles and trooping the color. The monarch has had two
birthday is this dates back from George the fourth and
there's no question at all that this is a fantastic

(09:34):
display of pageantry. It's also one that I mean the
late Queen Elizabeth was of course the expert on the parade.
She first attended in the nineteen fifties and there's no
doubt also that it's being altered to account for the
fact that King Charles, as you know, is battling cancer,

(09:55):
so he won't be riding as last year. He would
be in a carriage I think with Queen Camilla, and
he will be conducting the inspection from there and then
of course taking the salute from the Dios. There's little
question also that it showcases the very best in British ceremonial.
No country does it better, and a magnificent trial, the

(10:18):
triumphal avenue from Buckingham Paris to horse guards, the spectacle
there when after the trooping they change the guard. Then
there's the iconic appearance on Buckingham Paris balcony and the
fly last and the salutes and so forth. So the
various guards take it in terms most years to troop

(10:41):
the color and the coldstream lasted in twenty eighteen, and
it will be a spectacular display and it appears the
weather will be good, so we look something that will
also see for example, George Charlotte and Lewis on the
balcony and their antique will always draw interest from the press.

(11:02):
And of course last year when the Princess of Wales attended.
There had been speculation of whether or not she would.
She wore the most glorious outfit, a tribute to Audrey
Happens elives in My Fair Lady, and of course she
was herself battling cancer at the time. Now she's in
the mission. We look forward very much, of course to

(11:22):
seeing her.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
And the balcony moment is maybe the most exciting part
because that's when you get the fly past. So are
there any sort of expectations as to who might be
on the balcony? I mean, is it going to be
slimmed down or is it going to be a big
one this year?

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Well, I think that we'll see working members of the
royal family, and of course George, Charlotte and Lewis, and
with the Princess Anne her husband Fvice Admiral of Timothy Lawrence,
he will be there. I think that's a fair prediction.
I mean, for once we won't have too much speculation

(11:59):
about the Sussexes, because when royal occasions these days do
tend to involve that this little doubt that it will be.
It is a wonderful spectacle. It dates in the eighteenth
century and also from the time when in the power
of heat and fury and smoke of battle, it was

(12:22):
very often difficult to discriminate fair friend from foe. So
the color was something that was so to speak, when
it's trooped, so that in fact you can recognize who,
so to speak, is so on your side. And I
mean it has therefore last used in eighteen eighty one,
and of course now it's symbolic, but the regimental color

(12:44):
consecrated in the religious ceremony, it's very precious to the
regiment because of course it contains battle on us.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
And how are you planning on watching trip in the color?
Are you watching the television coverage?

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Well, I maybe, as I was last year giving some
television coverage they have in the past. It's always something
all It's important also to bear in mind that the
cold Stream and the other regiments are of from the
household cavalry and also the foot guards, that these are

(13:15):
serving soldiers, saying the half the cold Stream have participated
in training Ukrainian troops, They've seen service in Iraq, they've
trained troops from other countries, including some of the Caribbean.
So that's very important in a time when defense has
become a very substantial issue one is characteristic of its governments.

(13:39):
Don't want to spend money on it and that is
parcel of a very fewestibate at the moment, as.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
You know, absolutely well, I'll let you get on because
I'm sure you might have other people to speak to
