For this episode of The All-Around Adventure Podcast, I'm joined by Colonel Michael Fallon, a Vietnam-era Marine who served on Hill 119 near Da Nang during one of the most volatile chapters of the Vietnam War.
Colonel Fallon began his journey with a calling to serve in the Marine Corps, ultimately completing a distinguished 33-year career in the infantry. During his time in Vietnam, he was assigned to Hill 119. A strategic outpost constantly under threat from the North Vietnamese Army and their elite T-89 Sapper unit. Today, he tells his story, and those of his fellow Marines, in his book Hill 119: Defending a Reconnaissance Marines' OP, Vietnam, 1969–70.
In this episode, Colonel Fallon recounts his path into the Marine Corps and the harrowing yet transformative experiences he faced on the front lines. He shares what daily life was like on Hill 119 with facing ambushes, defending the perimeter under constant pressure, and building unbreakable bonds with his fellow Marines. He also reflects on how, despite the brutality of war, his time in Vietnam became one of the greatest adventures of his life, filled with unforgettable moments and personal growth.
