Brandick Putto and Christian Simmons are back with you to
break down the Ice Dog's weekend here after Halloween. We
are now in November, believe it or not, for the
twenty five to twenty six OHL season. Wow, I can't

(01:43):
believe we're already at this point. It's felt like we
just started training camp a few few weeks ago, Christian,
but here we are again. Make sure to give us

(02:04):
all of our video coverage. And thank you those that
are dedicated listeners to on all audio podcast platforms. So Christian,
definitely an exciting weekend. We had Halloween on the Friday night.
We also had Game seven of the World Series here
in our bar back Toronto. We had the Bills taking
down the Chiefs on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah CBS. Actually I think it was CBS Game of
the Week or something like that week. Excuse me, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
My boy Matt Ryan was on the panel, so I
was doubt the only thing I was excited about it.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
But other than that, launch a single snap of the game.
Watched the pregame report, that's it.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
I watched. I watched, I watched Matt Ryan on the
on the panel. But other than that, so again, Christian,
we're here to break down the Ice Dogs one in
one weekend for their two games in the Central Division
and riding the wave is what the episode is called
today because they went to they had a five game
winning streak come to an end against the North Bay Battalion.
But we're getting into into all of that on today'show.

(03:00):
We're also going to hear from Ice Doug's head coach
Chris Bartch and his wrap up thoughts on the weekend
as well. But a Friday night Halloween, we only get it,
you know, once once in a while, so it was
definitely exciting. We get like no kids at our place,
so we end up buying whatever candy we like the
most and they eating it, eating it after because we
only get like five kids. So I don't hold your neighborhood,

(03:20):
but it's a little bit disappointing us see as many
trigger treaders anymore.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Yeah, you know what, I think it's the weather, Like
it's the last couple of years now. I don't know
what's going on, but it seems to be like a rainy,
gloomy Halloween night, which maybe it's the ghosts of the
Halloween somewhere behind the strings, behind the scenes, they're pulling strings.
You know, they want that gloomy weather for Halloween. But
it was fun for me. I enjoyed it. Had kind

(03:46):
of a makeshift costume, you know, you know, you have
to kind of do what you can do. I did
not go out and buy one, but I had. I
was like a swat guy, just put on like a
had a vest, like a nice.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Little airsoft vest. So that was me.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
And then day two, I was a movie director, had
a little turtleneck on and some waspy glasses.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
So I had fun. Fantastic Halloween weekend. Not a ton
of candy for me.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
I'm trying to stay away from it, but enjoyable nonetheless,
And of course from a sports perspective, you know, a
traumatic weekend as well. I didn't get scared like you did,
you know, at a haunted house, but I got scared
on my couch watching sports this weekend. It was quite
the traumatic couple of days as a Toronto sports fan.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
But before we get to that, what was your caution
did you have one?

Speaker 1 (04:37):
No costume for me this year?

Speaker 3 (04:39):
No caution for you?

Speaker 1 (04:41):
And I was the Grinch and Santa clothing as the
as the guy that was a baseball team got knocked
out by the Blue Jays, So you know, I was
but hoping that it didn't go horribly wrong, and you know,
unfortunately it kind of did in the end.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
For you guys, yeah, you know what I but you
gotta have a little bit of a positive outlook here.
You know, it's a team that at the start of
the season had almost no expectations.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
So for me, I'm proud.

Speaker 4 (05:09):
You know, once I get all the anger out, you know,
I've I've broken some things, you know, I've gotten the
pain and anger out of my system. So I think
the pride and the sense of accomplishment has started to
waft over me. You know where I feel that that
immense success, feel that immense feeling of success, you know,

(05:30):
thinking back to you know, where this team.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Was and.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
Anybody watching on the video platform, yet we're showing the
It was so close, man, it was so close that play.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
You know, I was at that time.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
I was out at a venue surrounded by people watching
that play, and everybody thought the Blue Jays won the
World Series. For those of you listening on the audio platform,
Brandon just showed me a photo of the play. I
believe in the ninth or the tenth I think it
was runners at the corners. Ground ball hit up the middle,

(06:09):
second basement, snags it, whips it to the plate, and
I don't know who the base runner was, but he
came in ikm and he was out by a hair,
a sliver, like less than a hair. And you know
that that was We thought that was it. You know,
we people were celebrating. I got lifted up in the
air like you know what I mean, Like I was

(06:31):
like the lion king, like people were going nuts, and
all of a sudden the call comes back, and yeah,
but you know, you gotta feel a sense of accomplishment.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
They were close. They were close.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
They played a really good Dodgers team right to the wire.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
They took them to seven games. They didn't make it easy.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
What a series, you know, from Game one to Game seven,
entertaining baseball. You know, I've never watched a more inspiring
set of baseball games. So I mean, for me, I'm
I'm just happy that, you know, the Blue Jays went
that far and hopefully in the coming years it's something
to build on. But yeah, a little bit traumatic. I
went to the Bills game yesterday, so that was a

(07:12):
bit of a step in the right direction. You know,
helped me cheer up a little bit, you know, as
I was checking the live updates for the North Bay.
So I mean that it was a little bit of
a mixed mixed emotions all weekend.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Halloween was positive.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
The Blue Jays lost, the Bills won, the Ice Dog's loss,
so it's kind of a teeter totter this weekend for
sports results for me, But nevertheless, I'm happy to be here.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Yeah, I mean, I do feel for Blue Jays Nation
as much as I like to give it to them,
and they give it to me with the whole duh.
Yankees lose things, so we'll have to wait and see.
But it was definitely a great run and everybody in
this area it was. It was an exciting couple of weeks.
So hats off to them for a great season and
we'll see where they go from here. But turning things

(07:56):
back to hockey now, Christian and yeah, you know, the
Ice Dogs, as you mentioned, the first two periods in
North Bay were great or good enough. It was a
two to two game going to the third period, and
then things sort of went off the rails and before
we get going into the game portion of it, we
obviously had the debut of Noah Reid in his ice

(08:18):
Dogs jersey. So obviously we talked about it last week
a little bit with the timelines of everything. We had
talked to GM Frankie Vola and then the trade had
come out after the chat, so we didn't really get
the full scope of why this trade went down, the
timing of it and everything like that. But Noah Reid
comes over from the London Nights, a third round pick
of the Anaheim Ducks, a guy that you know, you

(08:39):
would hope that really adds to what this system is
trying to accomplish with Chris BArch and what they're really
looking at here and again at Saint Catherine's native coming
home played with the Saint Catherines Fogs. We talked all
about that last week. But he's gotten into two games
and we'll hear Chris BArch talk about him a little
bit and what he thought about his two games and
what they're looking for him going forward. But again we

(09:00):
don't get much practice time and just kind of get
thrown in into a trade and you got to move cities.
Like I know, he's going back home, but it was
still an adjustment period for him. But wearing number ninety
three now with the niag Or Ice Dog. So it
was definitely cool to see him in the Ice Dog's
colors once again. You know, full full circle moment for
him winning an HL championship and a Memorial Cup with
London last season, but now with that Anaheim Ducks affiliation

(09:22):
to his name. Coming back home with what were your
quick takeaways from what you saw from the first two games.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Yeah, No, I think he brings a lot more speed
than I was expecting. A guy that you know, like
you mentioned, in this system, is going to do very well.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
He four checks hard. He's a smart player.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
Too, and I think that's something that you know, it
doesn't show up in the box score and you know,
it doesn't show up in his point totals, but it
does show up on the draft board. You know, it
makes sense why he goes in the third round of
the NHL draft because he brings a lot of intelligence
to his game. He's a great positional player, and I
think he's going to fit very well on that second line.

(09:58):
And you know, we're going to talk of little bit
about how the lines are gonna get shuffled with this,
and you know, Chris BArch has you know, input later
in his segment, and I think he's gonna be a
great second line player for this team. That's where I
see him right now, as you know, potentially a second
liner depending on how things work out with some of

(10:19):
those guys in the bottom six. I could see, you know,
you know, a Monks making a jump. Kalianov could be
on the second line, you know, on occasion. But I
do think he slides in well there. But I loved
his couple of games, won some face offs, you know,
had a couple of had a penalty, but got some
shots on goal as well.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
I think he had a nice start.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
Like you said, it's gonna take time, you know, there's
there's an adjustment period, but I think you can see
the potential there of what they're what they're looking to
bring in. You know, somebody that's got the size, got
the speed, some two way hockey, a smart player, somebody
that can really help, you know, maybe a Patterson and
a Roebrick on what we're calling our second line, you know,

(11:01):
fill out the two hundred foot game. You know, we
know Riley Patterson can score, we know Robrick can score
as well. You need a guy beside those two players
that can do all of the other things around the
ice to allow them to be successful. And I think
he's gonna be a fantastic glue guy for those two players.
You know, I could see him being kind of the
robin to the batman squared to Riley Patterson and Ryan Robrick,

(11:25):
you know, to to really be you know, the kind
of the guy behind the curtain, you know. I think
he could fill that role really nicely on that second unit,
and I think we saw a little bit of that
over the first two games. But I'm excited for you know,
the future weeks. But I love his start his debut.
I thought it was great.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Yeah, and he'll definitely get more acclimated with a full
week of practice with this team this week, So I
expect Noah Reed to really be ramped up for these
two games against Ottawa and Eerie this weekend. So really
exciting to see and for broadcasters around the around the
league get to get ready for the read and read
on Niagara even ones with an A, ones with an I.
But both of them big parts of this team, and

(12:03):
Noah and Hayden Reid a little bit. I wanted to
mention Christian I'm gonna pull it up on the screen
for you guys listening along on the the audio version.
Our friend Bill Patrice from BPSN had a chance to
speak with GM Frankie Vola after the trade had happened.
Christian and let's see what we got here. Take ourselves
out for a second. So here we go. He basically
said the there's a lot of different factors and things

(12:25):
that played into the into this, but obviously to get
a good player, you have to give up a good player.
Ice Dog General Manager Frankieola said to Bill Patris, and
there's the college element that's not the deciding factor of it,
but making the decision on moving Brady, he did not
ask for a trade, and then bringing in Noah Reed
super exciting to get to come home. He said. It
was kind of a dream of mine going growing up,

(12:46):
so should be pretty cool. This kind of caught me
by surprise. I was out for lunch and got the
call and it was a surprise. But I'm glad to
be coming home to Niagara. Frankie Vola also mentioned you
know what he thought that Noah Reid can bring to
the team. He's the two thousand and seven born player,
third round pick of Anaheim Memorial Cup champion and played

(13:07):
in some big games that mattered and when the experience
with the Hunters, those are the things that checked off
the boxes for us. And he plays with the pace,
and he plays heavy. He plays a two hundred foot game,
so there's a ton of things we like about him.
So that is what was said from GM Frankie Bola
to our colleague Bill Patter from BPSN. You can go

(13:30):
check out the full article there in BPSN vpsportsnagar dot com.
But Christian, what are your sort of reactions to what
the GM said and sort of I guess reiterating what
we had said last week when we had initially talked
about the trade going down.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
I think a lack of surprise with a lot of
these messages. For sure, the college thing is a big factor.
You know, a guy like Wastlin was probably one year.
I think that's kind of the consensus. One year left
here in the OHL. It'd be hard to imagine him,
you know, drafted to an NHL team next year, got
a great program in Boston looking for him to come aboard.

(14:05):
I yeah, it's hard to imagine him staying. And you know,
for for for us here for Noah Reed coming the
other way. You know, a guy who's got that steep
learning curve. You know, he's shown tons of strides over
the past couple of years, you know, going from Saint
Catharine's and you know, the Junior B circuit, then up

(14:26):
to you know, the Ontario Hockey League and then from
there to being drafted. It's it's exciting to see a
guy that you know just keeps getting better and better
and you know for him, nice to come home as well.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
I know there's a photo circling right now.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
I don't know if you've seen it, Brandon or any
of our viewers have of uh No, Reed with as
a child with a bones plush doll. So I'm sure
for him it's it's really exciting. But yeah, you know,
to to Frank's points, you know his message, you know,
to get a great player, you're gonna have to give
up another one and to really even it out, you know,

(14:59):
on the draft, you know, from a value perspective, you
have to take all things into consideration, and that includes
Brady Wasslyn's college commitment, you know, and there's guys that
are going to look at this trade and say, you
know what, you know, he probably could have got a
draft pick back, could have got maybe a second rounder
or a first round, you know, potential draft pick, somebody
who's going to be drafted coming up, maybe somebody that's

(15:21):
even already committed to college themselves. And it's a an
even one for one, you know, somebody that's gonna leave
next year as well. And so I can understand, you know,
where the critics fall on a trade like this. It's
not exactly a direct value for value. It's not one
hundred percent a point producer for a point producer, but
you have to take all the other values of a

(15:42):
guy like Noah Read into consideration. Like, like Frank said,
plays the two hundred foot game, he plays heavy. He
fits into this style, this this coaching style very well.
You know, he's gonna bring other pieces to that top
six that just aren't there already. So for me, I
like the trade the longer I think about it, and
I think the Nigerais Dog's organization and the fan base

(16:04):
are going to be right there along with me. I
can be, you know, totally wrong about this, but I'm
gonna take a shot in the dark and say that
come the end of the season, I think no Reed's
going to be a staple in the top six, a
guy that we rely on night in and night out
to do some of those little things. And I think
a guy like Brady Wassly and as talented as he is,

(16:25):
doesn't go to those areas. He doesn't because that's not
his job, that's not his role, you know, it's not
his identity. And Noah Reed is entirely in that role.
So I think for this team, with the direction they're
trying to go and kind of the gaps that they're
looking to fill, I think Noh Reed is the perfect filler.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
So, you know, it's it's.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
Sad, you know, but I think it's gonna be a
good thing for this team.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
Of course, Brady Washington, I think at the end of
the year we'll have probably have more points than than
no A Reed. But again, if no Reed is bringing
a different type of play style that they really want
to implement when they already have sort of a lot
of those skilled wingers. We'll see how this trade works out,
but I think it works out for both teams, and
you know, one of those one for one trades without
any draft pick compensation that I think both teams are

(17:13):
happy with. Or they wouldn't have made the trades. So
we'll have to wait and see how this progresses, and
we'll see how Noah Reed really gets going, gets his
feet under him, being a full time nag or Ice
Dog Christian. Before we hit the braak, I do want
to quickly just bring up that Team Red did win
their game yesterday in the World Use seventeen challenge Ryerson

(17:33):
Agrid did not get on the scoreesheet, but off to
a good start there. So the Ice Dogs sixteen year
old coveted rookie is away right now, so that's shuffling
up the lines a little bit as well. And head
athletic therapist David Pandolfi shout out to Panda. He's also
out there for Team Red as well, so it'll be
interesting to see how they fare in the tournament.

Speaker 8 (17:53):
But good start, nonetheless, Yeah, no, good for him, right,
I mean, probably one of the times he's ever you know,
found himself on the international stage, and I think it's
gonna be really good for him.

Speaker 4 (18:05):
We're gonna get a player that's coming back with a
ton of experience. He's already been incredible, exceptional you know
from you know, his where he was drafted the stock
that he came in with. I don't know that we
were expecting a point per game player right away, but
that's what we got. And now we're sending him to
Nova Scotia to play with some of the best around
the world in his age category. I think he's going

(18:26):
to bring that experience back and he's gonna play at
an entirely different level.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
So excited for him.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
Of course, for a Team Canada to start with an
eight to four victory over Finland, that's great. But for me,
I'm gonna be a little selfish and say I'm I'm
ready for him to come back.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
We're waiting Ryerson, Edgar or Panda a little bit of both.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
You missed Panda around the rink too.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
Come on, he's game, huge heart, absolutely big blue guy.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
But I need him. Regardless of that. We're gonna take
our quick commercial break on todays show. We're going to
come back. We're gonna hear from myce Dog's head coach
Chris Bart and quickly give you our thoughts on the
weekends game. So stare it here. We're right back on

Let's go to Ice Dog's head coach Chris BArch with
his wrap up thoughts on the weekend. We'll come back

(23:44):
discuss that and get our thoughts on the game. So
as always, Inside the Coaches Room is brought to you
by the Nagar Deployment Health Center helping people find work
in Nagres is nineteen eighty three. Check out throughout to
day joboard at EHC dot on dot ca. Here are
the Ice Dogs head coaches thoughts and we're back on
another installment of Inside the Coaches Room with Nagars Doug's
head coach Chris BArch. Coach two games this week, two

(24:04):
divisional games as well against Brampton and North Bay. You know,
one and one on the weekend, a five game win
streak comes to an end. Brampton, you got the nice
four nothing win on Halloween back at home, and you
know things didn't turn your way in North Bay. How
would you assess the weekend?

Speaker 9 (24:16):
You know, I I would look at you know you
did touch on the game wind streak. I think no
different than you know. I guess if you're out living
in California, you're you're you're riding a wave. Eventually that
wave comes to an end. I think a little bit.
You know that that came to light this weekend. I felt, uh,

(24:40):
you know, we didn't deserve tonight. We got away from
what made us successful in regards to process, systems, structure,
character or just work away from the fuck and unfortunately, uh,
you know, when you don't keep yourself accountab those of
those elements, you don't keep your teammates accountable to those elements,

(25:02):
Eventually that that wave dissipates. And then you know, coming out,
you know, of that five game win streak. Yeah, you
got to be proud of what we accomplished. But again
there's a reset here. We start, you know, back to
work on Tuesday. Everybody gets a good day off, resets
in regard to mindsets, and we start preparing for Thursday.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
There's a pretty big week on and off the ice
for the team. Coach, a big name in Brady Wasslin
is sent to London and you bring in a local
product Noah Reed sat Catherine's Boy one, an Nohl championship,
a Memorial Cup championship. He's got the experience. He's a
third round pick of the Anaheim Ducks as well, so
obviously quite high value from people around the league. So
what do you like from Noah Reed? And what do

(25:43):
you see through the first two games of you know,
maybe not a lot of practice time and things like that,
but how do you think he'll progress into his role
here with this team?

Speaker 9 (25:50):
Yeah, you know, I do agree. You know, there's a
lot of systems. We have a lot of details within
how we play. Yes, it'll take him some time to
learn those, be it face off plays, you know, even
off of lost face offs. What to do you know
in each zone? What our our mindset and expectations, even

(26:11):
our offensive zone system. So you know, even I looked
at it, if you watch our team a month and
a half ago to where we are are now, it
takes that long to get to that point. And he's
going to go through that learning process too. Now he's
come from a great organization and know Markindale Hunter, well
you know doctor Mark before him coming here, I know
their dressmen was very upset with him leaving. I can

(26:34):
see why, you know, our young man is full of character.
He's full of compete exhibits and and and contains all
the attributes that we value as ice dogs. He's going
to bring a great work component to Patterson and Roebricks.
You know, He's gonna be a guy that's fierce and
and plays with tenacity on the floor, check that's willing

(26:56):
to come back and track off box. He's going to
make you know every foot that you you come towards
are not difficult to obtain. You know, He's going to
be a young man that uh you know, is going
to pass along a lot of his qualities to to
to the young group as it moves forward. So for
for me looking forward to it's been a pleasure over

(27:18):
the last two games, and he's really fit into our
uh uh you know, seamless. And then also to I
you know, I think it's a great element for the community.
Uh probably you know, for myself, I've got sons, and
I'm sure his mom and dad, you know, are are
ecstatic to have him in the house again and to
be able to watch you know, hockey games in person

(27:39):
and friends and family being around. It's a nice uh
moment and probably change the scenery for him, and a little.

Speaker 1 (27:47):
Bit of line shuffling here, coach, because you didn't have
Zada and that that first game against Brampton and with
Edgar being away at the World you seventeen's you sort
of have to do some line juggling right now. Hage
moved up in the line up the last little bit,
you know, Noah Reads trying to find a spot for him,
and some other guys coming in and out of the
line up and up and down, and maybe Hayden Reid
as well with what happened tonight in North Bay. But

(28:09):
regardless of that, how do you sort of juggle that
forward line now because it is a little bit different
of a lineup card than maybe you had even just
last week.

Speaker 9 (28:17):
Yeah, and when he even you know, you try to
mention Cole Cooksy, you know, mean he's a you know,
he's he's scored some real clutch goals for us. He's
a player that we can move around up and down
the line up. You know, Hey, I'd say that's it's
a great dynamic to have. There's a lot of internal competition,
there's a lot of internal push. We've got different guys

(28:39):
that can step a step up and contribute on any
given night. You know, you have Ethan Zada coming back
in the line tonight. You know, missed a couple of
couple of weeks, and you know, I know him, that's
difficult to sit up and watch a team. He puts
one hundred and ten percent every night he steps on
that ice. So yeah, you know, from a coach, it's

(29:00):
you know, with our forward group, it's a nice luxury
to have and again creates a real nice internal compete
element that keeps everybody on their toes.

Speaker 1 (29:10):
And then as far as your goaltending, with your Malenko,
he got the shut out to his first career shutout
against Brampton. I'm sure that was a big moment for
that young man. And back tonight here in North Bay
has a great first two periods and then you know,
things sort of went off the reels for the entire
team in that third period with the three quick goals
by North Bay. So you went back to your Malanco
in the second game as well, what did you think
of his performance and sort of maybe what happened in

(29:32):
that third period tonight?

Speaker 9 (29:33):
Yeah, you know what, you know, I thought your Mole
played as to what we expected. You know, he shown
himself as as a top goaltender in the league young
into the season. I'd also say too, you know, a
lot of congratulations land on goaltender's shoulders, but also a
lot of critique. It's a tough position to play because

(29:59):
there's nobody out behind you, you know, I mean that
gets to blame. But for for me, You're most been
spectacular so far this year. Actually, Robertson's been, you know,
both of them have been fantastic. You know, I do
look at it that there was you know, multiple breakdowns
in front of him that resulted in goals. We had
some out numbered rushes, We had some great a scoring

(30:22):
opportunities given up where we haven't given them up in
the past or or as many like we did this evening.
So for me, uh, you know, I'm I'm very satisfied
with our goalten, actually very excited with our goaltender goaltending candem.
And uh, you know what, for me, it's more just
you know, tightening the bolts in front of in front

(30:43):
of them both on just doing what we have to
do to transition bucks out of our zone. And if
that bucket is sixty feet from our zone, then you
know we've really got nothing to worry about.

Speaker 1 (30:53):
Ice Doug's head coach Chris barches with US coach a
few more quick ones for you. The North Bay game tonight.
It was the first time you played these guys, but
they're within your division, so I know that third period
got a little bit away from you. And there was
a lot of extracurricular stuff both ways, and some penalties
and some fights and things like that. When you're going
to play this team so many more times, what do
you think sort of the message was in in this

(31:14):
game to kind of show that you know, you're still
going to go to battle with the battalion many more
times within the division this season.

Speaker 9 (31:20):
Well, yeah, for me, it's number one, players are going
to want to play for each other or want to
play for each other, which I thought they did this evening.
Number two, you know they're going to do anything in
respect to our group, you know, really pushing the limit
of who they are as individuals on what they're willing
to do to change the momentum of a hockey game.

(31:40):
I thought, if you did look at that reverse call,
we had a lot of physicality, a lot of engagement
in compete situations, and we score a goal as a
result of it. So for me, you know, there there
was some growth there tonight from a different component, from
a component of how bad we really want to turn
momentum of game, which which was nice to see. And yeah, hey,

(32:03):
it is a Air Division ponent. You know we are
going to play them a number of times throughout this year.
And yes, we are not going to make easy you
know we we are going to push the limits of
of who we are and and and push the limits
of playing a layer and core criteria of our group.

Speaker 1 (32:22):
And then lastly, for you coach, sitting second place in
the conference, still first place in the Central Division, I
know it's you know, Barry North Bay. They're they're right
there with you. So you can't lose too many games
in a row here before they'd be right on your
tails again. But what's the message now as you go
into another two game week and and knowing you still
have the division lead, but knowing that a lot more work.

(32:43):
What's the message right now? Second place in the conference,
first place in the division.

Speaker 9 (32:47):
To be honest, the message will be the same as
it's been since beginning of the year. Control what we
have in front of us today, Prepare for what's coming
in the future, and if we control that preparation, it
allows an opportunity for success. So we don't know change
the way we approach our mindset and outlook from what

(33:11):
we've been doing over the last month and a half.
So there are six sixty eight games in this season.
If we're going to start picking too far ahead or
live in the past, we're in some trouble. We just
take every day and we grind as hard as we can,
and we get out as much as we can, and
we keep refining what we want to be as a group,

(33:31):
what we want to be as an individual, and what
we want to be known as in terms of our
systems and how we want to play, and then we
get ready for Thursday.

Speaker 1 (33:39):
Nice Doug's head coach Chris BArch and inside the coaches room, coach,
thanks a lot for the time, look forward to chatting
again the following Thursday's game against Ottawa. Thanks rad all right, Christian,
We're back after riding the wave is the name of
this episode, said by Chris BArch himself. The five game
winning streak comes to an end. Ladyslav your Malanco gets
his first career shutout against Brandon first two periods of

(34:02):
the North Bay game were very quality, and then things
sort of went off the rails with the four goals
by North Bay and the third and a lot of
penalty trouble and things like that. But did you have
any quick takeaways from what the Ice Dogs head coach
had to say?

Speaker 4 (34:13):
No, I think you know what he what he mentions
is you know, and what he's really trying to emphasize
that this is a long season. You know, one weekend
isn't going to make or break anything. Yes, there's some positives. No,
a Reed got off to a great start. Your Malenko
gets his first shutout. You know, pieces are starting to
come together, and we've seen that over the last couple
of weeks. But ride the wave, man, ride the wave.

(34:35):
You know, you have to know how to surf, you know,
in hockey you have to be able to take those hits.
You know, you have to be able to you know,
navigate you know, rough waters, in difficult terrain at times.
And and I think this is going to be one
of those weekends where things didn't go according to plan.
You know, a Brampton game was great. You know, you
find a shutout for a goaltender that's been stellar. He

(34:56):
absolutely deserves that. So for your Malenco, that's huge four
nothing victory. But of course in North Bay, I think
for me that's that's really where my focus shifts. You know,
the optics for me lay there. You know, a tough
stretch in that third period. They give up five unanswered
goals across the second and the third, So not a
great finish to that hockey game. But I think altogether,

(35:21):
not a not a terrible weekend. You know, you go
one for one, could be worse. As we take a
look here on the video platform if you're tuned in,
got a nice tight shot at the box score from
North Bay and the ice dog.

Speaker 3 (35:33):
Six to two was the score.

Speaker 4 (35:34):
The shots For me what really stands out, especially in
that first period. You know, we've talked a lot about
starting on time and you know we're not going to
go back down that rabbit hole because you know we've
mentioned it quite a few times. But six, six to
ten the shots in that first period just not good enough.
North Bay gets a great start, they build that momentum
and that carries them through into that second period. They

(35:56):
score I believe it was two goals in the second
and then they score another three in the third.

Speaker 1 (36:03):
If I'm one, one, one and four, one one and four.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
Yeah, there you go.

Speaker 4 (36:07):
So and then that you know, that last one that
won in the second was met by four and the
third that was five unanswered. Just a block of scoring
that the ice Dogs couldn't respond to. Another thing for me,
the power play wasn't overly successful this weekend either.

Speaker 3 (36:22):
They were one for six.

Speaker 4 (36:24):
As we just quickly take a look, I will mention
that briefly we'll move on stars of the game.

Speaker 3 (36:29):
Can't really argue with that there, I mean an all.

Speaker 4 (36:33):
Uh dark green uh star list. Parker Vaughan three points,
Bronson Ride had two, and then mc iver in between.

Speaker 3 (36:43):
The pipes had a great game as well.

Speaker 4 (36:44):
But for me, Riley Patterson he gets two seems to
be scoring in bunches right now, and you know, that's
fantastic for him, fantastic for us. If that second line
can really get going. You know, we've seen the first
line be an incredible offensive production, you know, group, if
the second line can start doing the same, I think
we find a fantastic symmetry across that top six. But

(37:09):
I thought Ryan Robert had a great game as well,
you know, on the power play and off he had
two points. He produced Kevin he got on the score sheet,
and so did Ardam fro Love. So and I will
say on the Riley Patterson goal, that first one, I
love the play that fro Love made at the point,
a little bit of a knuckle puck, just like a
slow roll or intowards the crease if anybody saw the goal.

(37:30):
It was a D to D pass and fro Love
took the space in front of him, and typically a
defenseman would make a play with you know, maybe a
little bit more.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
Speed or pace to a shot or to a pass.

Speaker 4 (37:44):
He just floated one in, you know, confused Mike McIver,
confused the defenseman. It was kind of like a you know,
a slow motion play. The puck finds Patterson on the
back door and he makes no mistake. So I wanted
to mention that I loved the intelligence for Love showed
there and just the creativity to do something a little
bit out of the box, and it worked, as Patterson

(38:06):
got his first of the night on that that goal there.
So for me, I mean, the positives are limited. I
think your Malenko also could have been better in this game.
A couple of goals that were not exactly fantastic.

Speaker 3 (38:20):
Maybe a little bit.

Speaker 4 (38:22):
Of a sophomore effect, you know, after that fantastic shutout
performance against Brampton comes back maybe a little tired, who knows.
But I thought there were a couple ones he could
have had back. A goal from the corner that was
scored kind of just went straight upstairs. There was a
one timer kind of straightaway center, you know, no screen,

(38:43):
probably could have made a save on that one. But
I do think, you know, the team is responsible ultimately.
You know, you have to put your goaltender in a
chance to be successful.

Speaker 3 (38:51):
And they didn't.

Speaker 4 (38:52):
You know, they didn't control the puck, they did not
break out well you know, there were no quick exits,
you know, there weren't, you know, and used to pursue.

Speaker 3 (39:01):
You know, give North Bay a lot of credit.

Speaker 4 (39:02):
They played a great hockey game, but I think the
Ice Dogs have you know, a lot more than what
they displayed in North Bay.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
But yeah, one and one on the weekend not terrible.

Speaker 4 (39:12):
It could be worse, but I think, you know, these
are kind of the things that you have to iron out.
You know, you have to be a defensively responsible team,
and you have to start on time and those are
two things that you know, the Ice Dogs did.

Speaker 3 (39:23):
Not do in North Bay and it results in a
you know, six two.

Speaker 1 (39:27):
Loss, and especially because when you look at it, North
Bay has been challenged to score a goal so far
this year and they put up six on the Ice Dogs. Again,
I don't want to put the the blame on fully
on load of stove your Maleaca, because I don't think
the Ice Dog's played to their identity in this North
Bay game. I think especially the first two periods you
saw they scored a two man advantage goal. Riley Patterson

(39:47):
gets a second of the night. They're up to to one.
It seems like they got all the momentum. They're rolling,
and they give up a power play goal to the
to the battalion right after that or shortly after in
the second period even things up. And the third period
to me just again and I think that was a
big learning experience for this team. They they took a
lot of penalties, they gave up those three quick goals.
Your Malenko would probably like that have one of those

(40:08):
two of those back. But again I just think, as
Chris BArch said, they where was the quote here? They're
trying to find it here. I can't even read my
own writing. Christian, I do that all the time.

Speaker 4 (40:19):
Wherever it actually was a quote that I remember though
they liked to make it difficult to themselves.

Speaker 1 (40:23):
Yes, that's it exactly we are. We're going to make life.
We aren't going to make life easy on us and
our opponents. So we have to push the limits of
what we're willing to do to change the momentum of
a hockey game. And that's exactly sort of what I'm
talking about there, is that you have two to one lead,
it's two two going to the third, to give up
three quick goals, you get into penalty trouble. Hayden Reid
takes that that reviewable five minute major. Again, hopefully there's

(40:46):
no subplemental discipline coming from that. It would be hard
to miss Hayden Reid in the lineup without Edgar, and
you know Zada just came back, so you know, you
hope that there's there's nothing with that. And then Kevin
he scores a goal, it's called back. So it's just
writing these momentum shifts in the game. And for the
Ice Dogs, this is the North Bay team that you
want to put away. I know it was the first
time they played them. They're gonna play them many more

(41:07):
times within the division. But you saw in that third
period and you know, scrums and the fights and race
Smith got into it with his former team as well.
Like I think that was sort of setting the tone
for what we're gonna see with this this series going
forward with these two teams, because you know, a team
under Ryan Ulahan that continues to get better after a
rebuilding season last year, they got loads of young talent

(41:28):
on this team, and the Ice Dogs are gonna they
can't they can't just expect to go into these games
and beat them because they think that they're better than
this team on paper. Because this North Bay team works
hard and they showed it in this game.

Speaker 4 (41:39):
Yeah no, And I think to go back to your
point about the power plays, like he just you have
to be more disciplined.

Speaker 3 (41:45):
And you know a lot of people would.

Speaker 4 (41:46):
Look at, you know, that five goal block where North
Bay just continues to score and say, well, you know
they're you know, two of them are on the power play,
three of them are on you know, and even strength.
But where does that momentum come from? It comes from
those power plays. You know, if you spend a sixth
of the hockey game killing a penalty, which is what

(42:07):
the Ice Dogs did. They took five penalties. That's ten
minutes of time in hockey game where you're killing and
a five minutes. So even worse, like you know, you
can't you can't do that to yourself where you know
you're you're really conceding momentum to a team and they
consistently are given more. Looks at your Malenco. He's working harder,
he's getting more tired. It's just it's not a great

(42:27):
situation to be in. So for me, I think the
discipline is also a big factor as well. So just
one more takeaway from what you said, But I totally
agree with you. I think, you know, just you know,
playing a team like that where you know, maybe you
know they're not necessarily at the top of you know,
any anybody's boards, but they're coming and and they're really growing.

(42:47):
They have a lot of young talent that's looking to
take steps. They're they're a team that's they're gonna show
up hungry. You know, they want to win. You know,
they're not nothing's guaranteed, nothing is you know given in
North Bay, and I think you know, That's why some
of those games are you know, typically more difficult than
playing a contender because you've got a team that's kind
of middle of the pack. They're starting to climb you know,

(43:08):
some of the leader boards, and they're hungry to win.
They're very hungry to win, you know, whereas a team
like Kitchen or a team like winsor a team like Barry,
you know, and even you know, to some extent, you know,
a team like London or Ottawa, you know, they play
good hockey night in, night out, and they expect to
get breakout performances from their stars, and you know, that's

(43:29):
what carries them to victory. A team like North Bay
coming in you know, fifth in the Eastern Conference, they're
getting a lot of their victories from hard work. You know,
they're playing good teams. They're putting out very strong efforts.
And I think when you play a team like that,
you know, North Bay, Peterborough, Kingston to name a few
kind of in the middle of the East. And then

(43:49):
for West it would be like the you know, Flint,
saganaw Gwelph. You know, when you play those teams that
have some of those young talents, but also you know,
an identity, not just you know, as as a young team,
but also as a team that's aspiring to you know,
take steps this year to.

Speaker 3 (44:08):
Win hockey games.

Speaker 4 (44:09):
They're coming in, you know night and I now really
looking to compete, and I think the Ice Dogs just
they did not meet that level of compete in North Bay.
And of course the penalties, you know, the goaltending situation,
the travel. You know, there's a lot of factors, like
it's not not a perfect weekend. You know, there's lots
of creases in the fold here. But I do think,

(44:29):
you know, that's when you want back, you know, especially
you know a conference matchup, you know, with a team
that's making strides, they're you know what, only was that
five points back?

Speaker 3 (44:39):
Yep, you know, you don't. You don't give up.

Speaker 4 (44:41):
You don't give up points easy to a team that's
you know, chasing you in the East. And I think,
you know, especially with the goal differential there, that's also
a big one. You know, you give up six to
a team like North Bay who's you know, like you said,
they have not scored with consistency. They've scored forty nine
goals this year. That puts that at the you know,
in the bottom half of the Ontario Hockey League, and

(45:02):
you know you gave them six So you know, I
think a couple of things to shake off. But you know,
you live and you learn there's always another week. You know,
the OHL keeps moving. You know we're not gonna stay
stationary here, back in drive and hopefully you know, look
forward to a difficult but an enjoyable couple weeks of hockey.
You know, this is where we start to see that,

(45:24):
you know, schedule really takes steps forward. You know we're
gonna see Ottawa a couple of times. You know, you
see Kitchener coming up later this month. You know we
talked about this last week. But you know you're gonna
see Branford again. You're gonna see Barry again. Like, those
are games you have to be ready for. And if
you're losing six to two to a team like North Bay,
those games aren't gonna go very well.

Speaker 3 (45:42):
You know you can't.

Speaker 4 (45:43):
You can't show up in you know, wins or Kitchener
with that kind of effort. You can't give Kitchener fifteen
minutes on a power play, they'll score twelve goals, do
you know what I mean? Like, so I think you
know those are kind of some of the wrinkles to
iron out, you know, from this weekend and just really
put yourself in a mindset, you know, starting at practice
tomorrow that you know, we have to be we have

(46:06):
to be ready, you know, we have to be ready.
We gotta you know, get on board, you know, kind
of all all hands on deck, so to speak, and
you know, be ready for these next couple of weeks.
So for me, those are my takeaways. You know, stay
out of penalty trouble. I think you're Melanco had a
great weekend. You know, could have been a little better.
In North Bay. I think uh nor Reid had a
great start. But stay out of penalty trouble.

Speaker 1 (46:30):
Yeah, there's Vladislava Malenko with his first shutout puck after
the game on Friday against uh the Brampton Steelheads. It
was funny because they played the Battalion and Brampton this
week and so many times you want to say Brampton
Battalion because the two teams were so Steelheads and the
North Bay Battalion nobody. But it came close a few

(46:53):
times with them going back to back against these two teams,
and I just want to quickly go over the box
score in North Bay, so I don't miss out or
against Brampton, so I don't miss out on some of
the key contributors. Kevin he Alex Hage, Hayden Reid and
Ryan Robrick all got on the board. Hage got two
points in his elevated role. It was nice to see
your Malenco pick up and assist as well in the
Hayden Reed goal. And Kevin he as you mentioned earlier,

(47:14):
its continues to be the catalyst and continues to lead
this team as the leader and as an offensive player.
So those are some key contributors in that win on
Halloween night against the Brampton Steelheads almost did it again
the Byampton battalion. Oh I remember the Brampton battalion.

Speaker 3 (47:32):
That's it's great.

Speaker 1 (47:33):
Those are my days. The Cody Hodgson's of the world.

Speaker 3 (47:36):
Oh man, I miss Cody Hodgson. What a player.

Speaker 1 (47:39):
I'm really aging myself on that one great curve.

Speaker 3 (47:42):
You know what Cody Hodgson is from where I'm from.

Speaker 4 (47:45):
Actually, I grew up in Markham and him and Steven
Stamkos used to used to come home for the winner
or sorry for the summer. And I remember meeting him
outside of an ice cream joint, like three blocks away
from my house. But I loved Cody Hodgson's curve, man,
I love it. He had like that kind of like
that narrow toe, uh no toe on the tape job.

Speaker 3 (48:05):
A little bit out, a little bit hanging off.

Speaker 4 (48:08):
I was a big fan of his. But uh, I
guess I'm a little little too, man. If I know
who Cody Hodgson is too, I'm aging myself. Man, come on,
But before we forget, I do want to mention. I
thought Alexander Age in that elevated role, he came ready.
Uh and that's exciting for you know potentially you know,
later deeper in this season. You know, if if you know,

(48:30):
the opportunity does present himself, if he has to slide
into that top six, we know he can do it.
You know, playing with Robrick and Patterson, he didn't look
out of place like you said. He had two points,
and you know this could happen, you know, with consistency
and then of course to have you know, Judnoff slide
in as well, you know, with the Jacob Monks and
a an A. Doherty unit on that on that fourth line,

(48:52):
they looked great. So I think that for me would
be you know, one of my one of my takeaways
from this weekend as well as is I did like
Alexander Age and that top six.

Speaker 1 (49:00):
Yeah, I think I think it's safe to say alex
Age gets our uh our dog biscuit this week.

Speaker 3 (49:04):
I think so.

Speaker 4 (49:05):
I think so we'll go with him and then uh,
your Maleenko will get the honorable mention for the shutout.

Speaker 3 (49:11):
He absolutely deserves that.

Speaker 4 (49:13):
I mean, we've seen him stand on his head uh
for you know, what is it maybe a month and
a half now of hockey that we've seen this year,
and you know, he's been incredible, so uh, very well deserved,
you know for him hopefully.

Speaker 3 (49:26):
Uh you know that Puck.

Speaker 4 (49:29):
At some point gets gets home to Belarus and you
know his family can enjoy, uh the the accomplishment that
they're they're young man, uh or I guess their son
has has achieved and you know, really exciting for him.
But I think, you know, Alexander Hage your Malanko honorable mention.
I'm I'm happy with that.

Speaker 1 (49:49):
Yeah, for sure. And Noah Reid first look at him
in the lineup and Ryerson Edgar being out, so we
don't really know what the full lineup is gonna look
like when everybody's back. We'll have to wait, uh to
see that sort of thing happens. Ethan Zoda just came
back after that that small suspension he had, so still
trying to work out exactly what Chris Barch's lineup card
is gonna look like. But again with a big trade

(50:11):
to start off the month of November. The Ice Dogs
have a different look, but they're sitting second in that
in that Eastern Conference right now, first place in the division.
But you got to continue to stack wins because those
Berry Colts are coming and they got a meal hemming
back from the Dallas Stars, so they are the hashtag
giddy up is the Barry Colts is hashtag and the
Ice Dougs definitely need to giddy up and start to,

(50:33):
you know, create some separation between North Bay and Barry,
because those are two teams that look like they're gonna
be challenging Niagara for that central division. Don't give him
the crown already in November, but they are the favorites
right now. But knowing how how well Barry can play Niagara,
it's gonna be a tough test this month. They got
a lot of big opponents coming up. They got Ottawa

(50:53):
this week again. Tickets available for Thursday's game, make sure
to go down to the Meridian Center. We'll be doing
all of our pre game stuff there. It's gonna be
a fun night down at the Meridian Center on Thursday night.
And then they have another geographical rival game against the
Erie Otters on Saturday, and Erie's sitting dead last in
the Western Conference. So to me, the Ice Dogs need
to come away with three or four points. We can

(51:14):
really stabilize and stake that flag to say, hey, this
is going to be our division. Because we all know
Brantford with the trade they made this week with Oshawa
getting Ben Danford the least first rounder, like they are
the class of the OHL right now. But if the
Ice Dogs want to, you know, say hey, you know
we can, We think we can go to toe to
toe with these guys. They need to put that steak
and be the Central Division champion. So to me, big

(51:36):
week for them coming up for a lot of reasons.
Noah Reed, getting going, everybody sort of getting back on
track after you know what was sort of a lot
of news last week. So I look for this team
to get back on track and and really, you know,
just continue to stack wins. As Chris bart said, they
can control what they control in front of us. They
don't change really anything week to week.

Speaker 4 (51:58):
Yeah, yeah, just you know, one week at a time,
and this week is you know, it's a work week.
You know, you got like you said, Ottawa and EARI
take take both of those games. Put yourself in a
good spot. Keep chasing. You know, Brantford, you know, who
have yet to win or sorry, lose a game in regulations.
A little bit scary there. But like you said, with Danford,
that team just keeps getting better and better. And with

(52:18):
Barry starting to nip at your heels, you know, every
game gets that much more important. So yeah, hopefully two
big wins. I think that Autawa game is gonna be
a tough one. You know, that's a team that has
not given up a ton of goals this season. If
anybody is looking here on the video.

Speaker 1 (52:35):
Platform, get defensive system.

Speaker 4 (52:40):
Great defensive system. They've only given up thirty seven goals here,
just quickly scanning. That's less than Brantford. They've given up
less than Branford. Actually the least amount of goals in
the Ontario Hockey league to date with the kitchen Or
Rangers just ahead of them with one more goal against
at thirty eight. So, you know, that's a team that's

(53:01):
been incredible over the last couple of weeks. They're on
the three game winning streak. They know, we know that
they can score, we know that they can keep the
puck out of their net. And for a team that
you know, over the past couple of games, you know,
especially the North Bay game, did not have a whole
lot of offense, offensive production, you're gonna have to be
ready for that game in Ottawa to really, you know,

(53:21):
hopefully put.

Speaker 3 (53:21):
Some numbers up on the board.

Speaker 4 (53:22):
And then when you play Erie, like you got to
win that game, you know what I mean, Like we
dropped one to Erie, you know a couple of weeks ago.
We you know, we got them the second night of
the back to back. But this can't happen again. You know,
when you play a team like Erie, you play a
team like Sarnia, you play Sudbury, like, you have to
beat those teams. You know, those are points that are
you know included in your projections. You know what I mean,

(53:47):
The bounces are gonna happen. You know, you're gonna play Branford.
You're not gonna win every time. You're not gonna beat
Winser every time, but you better beat Erie every time
because you know, those are the games that you know,
make all the difference at the end of the year.
You know, this league is, you know, it's such a tight,
you know league in the standings and you take a
look now, I mean Branford has you know, separated themselves
a little bit, but Niagra and Ottawa tied at twenty

(54:09):
one points and then Bury behind you at seventeen. In
the West, it's you know, the top four teams are
separated by a hair you know, one point, maybe two points,
you know, further down the list you go. So you know,
every game matters, you know, it really does, and you
have to be able to take you know games you
know where you can, where you can hopefully you know,

(54:30):
take victories, you know with ease. You know against a
team Lake Erie you need two points there, you need
two points there. So a big week for the Ice
Dogs and hopefully, like you said, Noah Reid gets settled
and you know we can really see you know what
we got you know here following this trade, and hopefully
a successful League hockey in.

Speaker 1 (54:46):
Niagara for sure, and again two points at the end
of the year could mean the difference of you or
the very Colts winning the Central Division.

Speaker 3 (54:52):
Right, so exactly, that means everything exactly.

Speaker 1 (54:55):
So the Ice Dogs need to continue to stack wins
and maybe they start another streak this week. After a
five GA great five game winning streak came to an
end against North Bay, let's start another one this week
here in the dog Country. So that's gonna wrap it
up for this episode of The Dog Pound Podcast, the

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
